Fitzrovia Mural

Fitzrovia Mural

Tucked off the busy Tottenham Court Road is Whitfield Gardens, home to the Fitzrovia Mural. This large piece records the life of the local community in 1980. Camden council had originally approached artists Mick Jones and Simon Barber to paint a piece on the blank wall of the council owned building. As it was under repair with a scaffold set up, it would cut down on some of the mural creation costs as well as add a colourful landmark to the area.

A consultation was held in the Fitzrovia Community Centre which allowed the local people to discuss what they would like to see in the mural. It was decided that the painting would show scenes of local life including portraits of local people. The work took six months of preparing the surface and painting the piece using household paints.

Shot with Pro HDR, processed using Camera+.

Gotham on Ice - Ice Hotel, Jukkasjarvi, Sweden

Gotham on Ice - Ice Hotel, Jukkasjarvi, Sweden

Feb 17th 2010

After picking up the hire car our first stop was 10km down the road at Jukkasjarvi to visit the world famous Ice Hotel.

It was truely amazing and the room, especially the Art Rooms, were so intricately carved. My favourite room was Gotham on Ice (because I like architecture and liked the architectural carving rather than being a fan of Batman!). Average cost of a room seems to be around ?300 a night but you aren't expected to sleep as it's too cold.

We stopped for a drink (non-alcholic costed ?5 each) at the Absolut sponsored Ice Bar. The drink came in an ice glass and we chose 4 different colours (although the general consensus was that the red one wasn't too nice, and the blue one tasted too much of ice pops or WKD Blue sans alcohol).

After visiting the hotel and having a drink in the Absolut bar we went to the Ice Church. That was really pretty. Some people in our hotel were getting married there later in the week. Quick check on the internet found that they were paying over ?2k for the ceremony, plus the extra costs of the guests. Must've been a chilly wedding! Hope she got a thermal dress. We were cold in coats, jumpers and thermal tops wandering about the hotel!

After the Ice Hotel, bar and church we needed warming up so headed inside to the Ice Hotel cafe. Modern, wooden building serves as the booking area, restaurant, inside bar etc. Had a lovely hot chocolate to warm us up.

We had bought lunch at the ICA supermarket so we made sandwiches as we drove to our next destination at Abisko National Park.

Hotel Room

Hotel Room

Our hotel room. This picture doesn't actually give an accurate idea of the size of the room...I was standing right in the doorway to take it. There was a small washstand, TV, fireplace, and wardrobe just off to the right, but I didn't post the picture of that side of room due to the fact Rachel's damp underwear was hung up to dry there.

Note the teakettle -- very important for an English hotel room.

Yes, that is an aardvark is at the lower left. Rachel bought her in Edinburgh, and asked "What do you name an aardvark?"

I answered, "There's only one name for an aardvark."

Ethel, of course. If you don't get that, you haven't seen enough Monty Python.

It was a cosy little place. I was quite happy there.

Goodbye, hotel room. Goodbye, London.

The Hollywood Tower Hotel

The Hollywood Tower Hotel

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Disney California Adventure
Anaheim, CA

If you look at the last 17 or so years you'll see notice that Disney has been on a bit of an E-ticket attraction roll. Indiana Jones in 1995, Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues under the Sea in 2001, Expedition Everest in 2006, and arguably Star Tours 2.0 in 2011 (and perhaps Radiator Springs Racers in 2012). This string of E-ticket hits all started with the arrival of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in 1994, and it may arguably still be the best of the bunch. There's a unique atmosphere about it, combining a refined golden age of Hollywood aesthetic, Haunted Mansion sense of the macabre, and the excitement of a thrill ride. It feels uniquely "old" Disney in atmosphere but "new" Disney in execution and as such feels integrated yet modern. My only complaint is that the Twilight Zone theme largely feels unnecessary and perhaps a bit forced. I think the attraction would do fine without it, as the Tokyo version attests.

There's no doubt that the original and more robust version in Florida is the superior incarnation, but even the slightly abbreviated version in California still hits all the right notes, much like Florida's Pirates of the Caribbean is still great even though the original in California is ever so slightly better.

When I saw this shot in my files last night, I thought it looked awesome. Upon further review this morning, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking, because it doesn't do a whole lot for me now (I think I liked the grit of the processing, the shallow DoF despite having used a UWA, and the look of the roots in general; still, I was really impressed by this shot, and it's clearly nothing special).

I also realized I've only posted one Summer Nightastic! Fireworks shot. I will remedy that tonight by posting another.

US Treasury & Pennsylvania Avenue

There are three ground-based places from which to look at Washington from above. The first, of course, is the Washington Monument, at 555 feet in height. It's a hassle because you have to make reservations in advance or hope you can get a same-day ticket. The third is the Washington Cathedral, which is located on Washington's highest hill and -- at its highest point -- is actually above the Washington Monument. The second is the Old Post Office tower, at 270 feet the second tallest building in Washington. You don't have long lines, but -- as you'll see if you go up there -- you do have pigeon wires to deal with. As you'll see from a couple of sample photos in this set, you may find yourself shooting through wires.

How do you handle a situation in which you have to shoot through wires you can't move? Nothing is perfect, but there are a couple of options. It turns out that some of the viewpoints have one (count 'em, one) wire missing. If your camera has a small lens barrel, you may be able to get the lens through the gap to shoot without wires in the frame. (That's one reason I brought the Canon Powershot Pro1 instead of the Canon EOS 5D, incidentally.) The second approach is to use a long zoom lens or long focal-length lens to "soften up" the wires in the foreground. That approach is not perfect, but you'd be surprised at how clear it leaves your photos.

Here is a real tip. Whenever you stay at any hotel or motel, ASK for their best rate. You will often get a better deal than if you don't ask. Our stay at this very fine motel is a prime example. We were on a road trip when I walked into the lobby past 10 p.m. and asked, "What is your best rate on a non-smoking room." The woman at the desk said, "$64. Since you asked I'll give you a discount."

As I was registering another man walked in and asked, "How much is a room?" The woman quoted him $87, which is the rack rate. I saved $23 just by asking. This doesn't work everywhere, but it does many places. You have nothing to lose by asking.

We're quite happy with the stay.

For those of you who do not know, most of my family is from South Alabama. Mostly around Geneva, Hartford, and Enterprise. My Great Uncle was a doctor and worked at the Medical Center Enterprise for most of his professional life, and was also a major driving force for expansion of the hospital.

If you don't know the layout of the city of Enterprise well, this hospital is located about 2-3 blocks from Enterprise High School. Fortunately, this hospital was spared in the tornado, and not all of the trauma had to be sent to other area hospitals such as Wiregrass, Southeast, or Flowers.

During the tornado, my Uncle's Nephew's house was destroyed along with many other houses.

Galapagos Islands-734

Galapagos Islands-734

A giant tortoise at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz

Galapagos Giant Tortoise
The Galapagos tortoise or Galapagos giant tortoise (Geochelone nigra) is the largest living tortoise, native to seven islands of the Galapagos archipelago. The Galapagos tortoise is unique to the Galapagos Islands. Fully grown adults can weigh over 300 kilograms (661 lb) and measure 1.2 meters (4 ft) long. They are long-lived with a life expectancy in the wild estimated to be 100-150 years. Populations fell dramatically because of hunting and the introduction of predators and grazers by humans since the seventeenth century. Now only ten subspecies of the original twelve exist in the wild. However, conservation efforts since the establishment of the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation have met with success, and hundreds of captive-bred juveniles have been released back onto their home islands. They have become one of the most symbolic animals of the fauna of the Galapagos Islands. The tortoises have very large shells (carapace) made of bone. The bony plates of the shell are integral to the skeleton, fused with the ribs in a rigid protective structure. Naturalist Charles Darwin remarked "These animals grow to an immense size ... several so large that it required six or eight men to lift them from the ground.". This is due to the phenomenon of island gigantism whereby in the absence of natural predation, the largest tortoises had a survival advantage and no disadvantage in fleeing or fending off predators. When threatened, it can withdraw its head, neck and all forelimbs into its shell for protection, presenting a protected shield to a would-be predator. The legs have hard scales that also provide armour when withdrawn. Tortoises keep a characteristic scute pattern on their shell throughout life. These have annual growth bands but are not useful for aging as the outer layers are worn off. There is little variation in the dull-brown colour of the shell or scales. Physical features (including shape of the shell) relate to the habitat of each of the subspecies. These differences were noted by Captain Porter even before Charles Darwin. Larger islands with more wet highlands such as Santa Cruz and the Alcedo Volcano on Isabela have lush vegetation near the ground. Tortoises here tend to have 'dome-back' shells. These animals have restricted upward head movement due to shorter necks, and also have shorter limbs. These are the heaviest and largest of the subspecies.Smaller, drier islands such as Espanola and Pinta are inhabited by tortoises with 'saddleback' shells comprising a flatter carapace which is elevated above the neck and flared above the hind feet. Along with longer neck and limbs, this allows them to browse taller vegetation. On these drier islands the Galapagos Opuntia cactus (a major source of their fluids) has evolved a taller, tree-like form. This is evidence of an evolutionary arms race between progressively taller tortoises and correspondingly taller cacti. Saddlebacks are smaller in size than domebacks. They tend to have a yellowish color on lower mandible and throat. At one extreme, the Sierra Negra volcano population that inhabits southern Isabela Island has a very flattened "tabletop" shell. However, there is no saddleback/domeback dualism; tortoises can also be of 'intermediate' type with characteristics of both. The tortoises are slow-moving reptiles with an average long-distance walking speed of 0.3 km/h (0.18 mph). Although feeding giant tortoises browse with no apparent direction, when moving to water-holes or nesting grounds, they can move at surprising speeds for their size. Marked individuals have been reported to have traveled 13 km in two days. Being cold-blooded, the tortoises bask for two hours after dawn, absorbing the energy through their shells, then becoming active for 8–9 hours a day. They may sleep for about sixteen hours in a mud wallow partially or submerged in rain-formed pools (sometimes dew ponds formed by garua-moisture dripping off trees). This may be both a thermoregulatory response and a protection from parasites such as mosquitoes and ticks. Some rest in a 'pallet'- a snug depression in soft ground or dense brush- which probably helps to conserve heat and may aid digestion. On the Alcedo Volcano, repeated use of the same sites by the large resident population has resulted in the formation of small sandy pits. Darwin observed that: "The inhabitants believe that these animals are absolutely deaf; certainly they do not overhear a person walking near behind them. I was always amused, when overtaking one of these great monsters as it was quietly pacing along, to see how suddenly, the instant I passed, it would draw in its head and legs, and uttering a deep hiss fall to the ground with a heavy sound, as if struck dead." The tortoises can vocalise in aggressive encounters, whilst righting themselves if turned upside down and, in

Now there’s no more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Available in select metropolitan areas, photoReal junction view makes unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. When you approach an exit or interchange, nuvi 2595LMT will enter split screen mode and show you a realistic depiction of junctions on your route, complete with road signs and arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.
Go Beyond Navigation
Point-to-point navigation is just the beginning. nuvi 2595LMT features a microSD™ card slot so you can store and use detailed cityXplorer™ maps or download custom voices and vehicles for free from the Garmin Garage. Bluetooth® connectivity lets you make and take hands-free calls and texts, while dual-orientation functionality lets you hold the nuvi vertically or horizontally for added convenience driving or walking.
The "Where Am I?" emergency locator provides your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and more while Enhanced Exit Services tells you what services you’re approaching on the highway.
