Dandelion & Nettles Herbal Vinegar

Dandelion & Nettles Herbal Vinegar

Started on April 22nd, 2008. This will take about 6 weeks until it is finished. I have dandelions and nettles sitting in apple cider vinegar.
This is easy. All you need are the following ingredients:
*Apple Cider Vinegar
*Stinging Nettle (we used my dried stash)
*Dandelion flowers (the earlier in the season, the better)
*Some kids to help the harvest! LOL.
Ok. So the last ingredient is optional. But certainly helpful, and a wonderful experience for them.

One of our Aussie friends went to get some apple juice to use as a mixer. Unknowingly because she doesn't read Croatian, she bought apple cider vinegar instead and found out the hard way after her first sip. This guy told us we had "acid; used for salads" and not fruit juice. Oops.

The Warsaw Ghetto

The Warsaw Ghetto

In October 1940 the nazis established the "Ghetto" in Warszaw, building a wall around several blocks of the city, where 400.000 jews and were imprisoned under very hard conditions. They had a food ration for about 220 calories each day, whilst the germans themselves in Warszawa had around 2600 calories each day.

Hunger, the cold and diseases killed 100.000 of the jews in the ghetto, and those who didn't die soon was about to be sent to Treblinka and other concentration camps for Hitlers' "final solution". During july, august and september 1942 300.000 jews from the ghetto was sent to the consentration camps and murdred there. The rumours about the camps sparked the Ghetto Uprising in January 1943 when the Germans started the final expulsion of the remaining Jews. The Jewish fighters had some success: the expulsion stopped after four days and the resistance organizations took control of the Ghetto, building shelters and fighting posts and operating against Jewish collaborators.

The final battle started on the eve of Passover of April 19, 1943, when a Nazi force consisting of several thousand troops entered the ghetto. After initial setbacks, the Germans systematically burned and blew up the ghetto buildings, block by block, rounding up or murdering anybody they could capture. Significant resistance ended on April 23, and the Nazi operation officially ended in mid-May, symbolically culminated with the demolition of the Great Synagogue of Warsaw on May 16.

The building on the photo is one of the few ones still standing from the Ghetto, at Bagno/Prozna in central Warsaw. We stayed at Paul's familys small apartement close by. The area is a strange architectural and historical mix of these from the Ghetto, to old communist concrete monsters and new modern buildings.

Day 301 of 365

Hmmm ... Today was Red Dead Redemption day. I played that game all day.

Something worth mentioning for today is that I was a bit surprised this morning to see my weight. Gone up to 81kg. I was like wth that's not right. Weight again it goes down to 79kg. To make things short couch potato too much these days. I am not sure if those extra kg are fat or muscle. I would like to hope it's muscle coz I've been working on the pecs these days. What the heck I will just assume they are all fat to keep me motivated for do some exercise. So I did. I took another walk tonight to burn them nasty calories. 7.2km 400 calories according to this site.

Vedda forrest-dwelling girl in her classroom, Tissa, Sri Lanka

Vedda forrest-dwelling girl in her classroom, Tissa, Sri Lanka

Veddas are an indigenous people of Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. According to Early Man and the Rise of Civilisation in Sri Lanka: the Archaeological Evidence by S. U. Deraniyagala, by about 125,000 BP it is certain that there were prehistoric settlements in Sri Lanka . From as early as 18,000 BC a genetic continuum is shown with present-day Veddas.
According to the genesis myth of the Sinhala "race"/people, recorded in the ancient chronicle of the Sinhalese royalty, the Mahavansa, the Pulindas also called Veddas are descended from the exiled Prince Vijaya from West Bengal (6th-5th century BC), the founding father of the Sinhalese nation, through Kuveni, a Tamil woman of the Yakkha clan whom he had espoused. The Mahavansa relates that following the repudiation of Kuveni by Vijaya, in favour of a "Kshatriya" princess from the "Pandya" country in South India, their two children, a boy and a girl, departed to the region of "Sumanakuta" (Adam's Peak in the Ratnapura District), where they multiplied, giving rise to the Veddhas. Anthropologists such as the Seligmanns (The Veddhas 1911) believe the Veddhas to be identical with the "Yakkhas" of yore.
Veddas are also mentioned in Robert Knox's history of his captivity by the King of Kandy in the 17th century. Knox described them as "wild men," but also said there was a "tamer sort," and that the latter sometimes served in the king's army.
The Rtnapura District, which is part of the Sabaragamuwa Province is known to have been inhabited by the Veddhas in the distant past. This has been shown by scholars like Nandadeva Wijesekera (Veddhas in transition 1964). Indeed, the very name Sabaragamuwa is believed to have meant the village of the Sabaras or "forest barbarians". Such place-names as Veddha-gala (Veddha Rock), Veddha-ela (Veddha Canal) and Vedi-kanda (Veddha Mountain) in the Ratnapura District also bear testimony to this. As Wijesekera observes, a strong Veddha element is discernible in the population of Veddha-gala and its environs. As for the traditional Veddha lifestyle, a number of authorities have delved on this and we can easily describe their life-style as it existed in the past, and as it exists today.
LanguageMain article: Vedda language
The original language of the Veddas is the Vedda language. Today it is used primarily by the interior Veddas. Communities, such as Coast Veddas and Anuradhapura Veddas, that identify themselves strictly as Veddas also use Vedda language in part for communication during hunting and or for religious chants. When a systematic field study was conducted in 1959 it was determined that the language was confined to the older generation of Veddas from Dambana. In 1990s self-identifying Veddas knew few words and phrases in the Vedda language, but there were individuals who knew the language comprehensively. Initially there was considerable debate amongst linguists as to whether Vedda is a dialect of Sinhalese or an independent language. Later studies indicate that it diverged from its parent stock in the 10th century and became a Creole and a stable independent language by the 13 century, under the influence of Sinhalese.
The parent Vedda language(s) is of unknown genetic origins, while Sinhalese is of the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European languages. Phonologically it is distinguished from Sinhalese by the higher frequency of palatal sounds C and J. The effect is also heightened by the addition of inanimate suffixes. Morphologically Vedda language word class is divided into nouns, verbs and invariables with unique gender distinctions in animate nouns. Per its Creole tradition, it has reduced and simplified many forms of Sinhalese such as second person pronouns and denotations of negative meanings. Instead borrowing new words from Sinhalese Vedda created combinations of words from a limited lexical stock. Vedda also maintains many archaic Sinhalese terms prior to the 10th to 12th centuries, as a relict of its close contact with Sinhalese. Vedda also retains a number of unique words that cannot be derived from Sinhalese. Conversely, Sinhalese has also borrowed from the original Vedda language, words and grammatical structures, differentiating it from its related Indo-Aryan languages. Vedda has exerted a substratum influence in the formation of Sinhalese.
Sinhala-speaking Veddas are found primarily in the southeastern part of the country, especially in the vicinity of Bintenne in Uva District. There are also Sinhala-speaking Veddas who live in Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province.
Another group, often termed East Coast Veddas, is found in coastal areas of the Eastern Province, between Batticaloa and Trincomalee. These Veddas speak Tamil Tamil. The Sinhala speaking East Coast Veddas, are called Panama Veddas. They live just south of Batticoloa.
Cultural aspects[edit] ReligionAnimism is the original religion of Veddas. The

Cristina as you said he is a beauty my friend and now a regular visitor to my garden.

Blue Tit

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Blue Tit, Cyanistes caeruleus, is a 10.5 to 12 cm (4.2 to 4.8 inches,) long passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is a widespread and common resident breeder throughout temperate and subarctic Europe and western Asia in deciduous or mixed woodlands. It is a resident bird, i.e., most birds do not migrate.

Taxonomy
This species was first described by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758 as Parus caeruleus.
Most authorities retain Cyanistes as a subgenus of Parus, but the British Ornithologists' Union treats Cyanistes as a distinct genus. This is supported by mtDNA cytochrome b sequence analysis which sests that Cyanistes is not only distinct, but not close to other tits (Gill et al., 2005).

Description
The azure blue crown and dark blue line passing through the eye and encircling the white cheeks to the chin give the Blue Tit a very distinctive appearance. The forehead and a bar on the wing are white. The nape, wings and tail are blue; the back is yellowish green; the under parts mostly sulphur-yellow with a dark line down the abdomen. The bill is black, the legs bluish grey, and the irides dark brown. Young Blue Tits are noticeably more yellow. This is a common and popular European garden bird, due to its perky acrobatic performances when feeding on nuts or suet. It swings beneath the holder, calling tee, tee, tee or a scolding churr.
The song period lasts almost all the year round, but is most often heard during February to June.

Breeding
It will nest in any suitable hole in a tree, wall, or stump, or an artificial nest box, often competing with House Sparrows or Great Tits for the site. Few birds more readily accept the shelter of a nesting box; the same hole is returned to year after year, and when one pair dies another takes possession.
The bird is a close sitter, hissing and biting at an intruding finger. In the South West of England such behaviour has earned the Blue Tit the colloquial nick-name "Little Billy Biter". When protecting its eggs it raises its crest, but this is a sign of excitement rather than anger, for it is also elevated during nuptial display. The nesting material is usually moss, wool, hair and feathers, and the eggs are laid in April or May. The number in the clutch is often very large, but seven or eight are normal, and bigger clutches are usually laid by two or even more hens

Behaviour
Blue and Great Tits form mixed winter flocks, and the former are perhaps the better gymnasts in the slender twigs. A Blue Tit will often ascend a trunk in short jerky hops, imitating a Treecreeper. As a rule the bird roosts in ivy or evergreens, but in hard weather will shelter in a hole. Blue tits are very agile and can hang from almost anywhere.
The Blue Tit has an average life expectancy of 1.5 years

Diet
The Blue Tit is a valuable destroyer of pests, though it has not an entirely clean sheet as a beneficial species. It is fond of young buds of various trees, and may pull them to bits in the hope of finding insects. No species, however, destroys more coccids and aphids, the worst foes of many plants. It takes leaf miner grubs and green tortrix moths (Tortricidae). Seeds are eaten, as with all this family.

Learning
An interesting example of culturally transmitted learning in birds was the phenomenon dating from the 1960s of Blue Tits teaching one another how to open traditional British Milk bottles with foil tops, to get at the cream underneath. This behaviour has declined recently because of the trend toward buying low-fat (skimmed) milk, and the replacement of doorstep delivery by supermarket purchases of milk.

Conservation
Blue Tit populations often decrease considerably during harsh winters or after poor breeding seasons where the weather is cold and wet, particularly if this coincides with the emergence of the caterpillars on which the nestlings are fed.

I need a film expert!!!!

I need a film expert!!!!

Calling all film experts! I NEED YOUR HELP! Is there any way to recover images from this kind of film?

I really do not have a clue to what kind of film this is or the decade it was made. I am hoping it is film from a WWII plane. This was found on a beach that once was the end of a Japanese, then American runway in WWII. Countless planes were destroyed and parts of these planes are everywhere. The metal around the film is aluminum - the same kind I find on the plane parts out here. The corrosion of the aluminum around the film looks just like the corrosion I see on plane parts too!

It took a picture of me holding it to give you a feel for its size. If this is from WWII, which I highly suspect, it has been stuck and buried in sand for over 65 years. We have had some major erosion occurring here the past few years and a number of WWII artifacts have been showing up.

I looked over this roll of film but couldn't make out any single letter or number. So I have no idea if it is Japanese or American. Anyone know anything about this kind of stuff? If it is from a plane, oh what a joy it would be to learn there are recoverable images from this thing. If it is not from a plane but from someone's home collection, oh what a joy it would be to discover there is lost WWII battle footage that can be recovered. Or, perhaps it is footage of Japanese life before the American invasion or, footage of American life after the invasion.

What ever it is, I WANT TO KNOW!!!!! ;-)

low fat recipes for kids - Raising Low-Fat

Raising Low-Fat Kids in a High-Fat World

Raising Low-Fat Kids in a High-Fat World

American children eat too much fat. Concerned parents who are seeking guidance in maneuvering their children through this high-fat world need look no further than Judith Shaw's new book. With this guide, parents will learn how to decode nutritional and ingredient labels, detect hidden fat in foods, and find ways to substitute lower-fat ingredients without radical changes in the family diet. As a mother who has successfully lowered the fat in her kids' diet, Shaw offers helpful, realistic advice that parents can immediately put to use. Although 40 of the author's favorite kid-tested recipes are included, this volume is much more than a cookbook; it's a culinary philosophy and practical method to painlessly guide the entire family to a healthier diet.

A trip to the supermarket these days reveals something truly frightening: some of today's kids are really, really fat. And if you look in their parents' grocery carts, it's easy to see why. Judith Shaw started worrying about this issue back in the 60s, when she saw family members and friends' parents dying from heart disease, and has had 30 years to perfect her approach to low-fat eating for families. She not only helps you understand what fat is and what it does, she shows you how to shop, cook, and keep food on hand that's all kid-friendly and still healthfully low-fat.

Wedge Salad w/Homemade Ranch

Wedge Salad w/Homemade Ranch

This weekend we were having a family over to dinner and I really wanted to make something everyone would like. When the kids were younger, we would usually make something fancier for the adults and then have a kid friendly option. Now that the kids are getting older, I really love having the kids at the table with us talking about dinner just like we always do with our friends. On the menu this weekend were grilled flat iron steaks, twice baked potatoes, corn on the cob and wedge salads with a super easy homemade ranch dressing.

While ranch is not my favorite, I knew the kids would all like it. I also realized I had only ever tried ranch from a bottle. Here's what I came up with, I think it's so much better than anything from a bottle.

2 Cloves Garlic
? cup Italian Flat-Leaf Parsley
2 Tablespoons Fresh Chives
1 Tablespoon Fresh Oregano
1 cup Real Mayonnaise
? cups Sour Cream, Low-Fat worked great
? teaspoon White Vinegar
? teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
Dash Cayenne Pepper
? teaspoon Paprika
Buttermilk (as Needed To Desired Consistency)
Salt To Taste

Mince the garlic with a knife and then sprinkle about and 1/8 to ? teaspoons of salt on it and mash it into a paste with a fork. You have to mash it or you will end up with garlic pieces that are to bold in the dressing. Chop the parsley, chives and oregano very finely and add to the garlic.
In a bowl combine all ingredients, tasting frequently and adjusting seasonings as needed. Chill for a couple of hours before serving, thin with buttermilk if desired.

I am, of course, a person with high moral values and a strong sense of right and wrong. However, despite stating that I do not agree with the teachers' strike, I encouraged my NUT (the Union who were on strike yesterday, for those who don't know) colleague to muster as much support for yesterday's action as possible. The deal was this - if enough NUTters went on strike to give the rest of us a day in school without kids, I'd bake cakes.

And here they are. Cheers Lisa xx

The recipe, for those who are interested, is Weight Watchers friendly and very easy to follow:

Low Fat Fairy Cakes.

These tiny cakes will satisfy your craving for naughty food, and will be a sure-fire hit with everyone.

100g low fat spread
60 g Silver Spoon Half Spoon Sugar
100g SR flour
2 eggs
Pinch of baking powder
Drop of vanilla essence

To decorate: 20g icing sugar mixed to a paste with a small amount of water. Dragees/hundreds and thousands, etc.

Cream the half-spoon sugar and the low fat spread together till pale yellow and smooth. Add the flour, sieved, with a pinch of baking powder. Beat in the eggs and add a drop of vanilla essence. Split the mix into 24 petit four cases then bake at gas mark 4 for 20 mins or until golden.

Leave to cool then decorate with a blob of icing and fripperies of your choice.

Weight Watchers points: 1 per cake.

Cut holes in ceilings in less time than it takes to trace the circle and begin cutting with other tools. Like all Hole Pro Power Series kits the safety shield can be used with the Hole Pro XL-Arbor kit to enable the use of specialty hole cutters such as tungsten grit cutters when cutting tile or stone and have the same dust control and depth control as the adjustable hole cutters.

The 3-Season Diet: Eat the Way Nature Intended: Lose Weight, Beat Food Cravings, and Get Fit

The 3-Season Diet: Eat the Way Nature Intended: Lose Weight, Beat Food Cravings, and Get Fit

* Do you drink coffee in the morning to get your day started?

* Do you work through lunch?

* Do you crave sweets or a nap in the afternoon?

* Have you tried losing weight in the past three years and given up?

* Do you tend to have bouts of worry, anxiety, and depression?

* Do you have difficulty remembering things?

If you do, this book will help you restore balance to your daily life. By following its simple instructions for eating foods appropriate to each season, adjusting your diet to your body type, eating at the optimal time of the day, and exercising without triggering a survival response, you will not only lose excess pounds and maintain your ideal weight, you will generate energy and power in your life.

Derived from a 5,000-year-old traditional medical system, the 3-season diet does what no other diet will: work along with the body's natural response to the changing seasons, feeding it what it craves and can best utilize at all times. In spring, for instance, we want salads, berries, and leafy greens, a naturally low-fat diet. And in winter, we yearn for hearty soups, nuts, warm grains, and high-fat and protein-rich foods such as fish and meat. Following the foods that nature provides seasonally creates the best diet for balancing weight, mood, and energy for anyone living anywhere on earth.

THE EDIBLE FLESH OF ONE WHALE EQUALS IN BULK STEERS OR 500 SHEEP, AND IT "TASTES REMARKABLY LIKE BEEF"

WHALE-STEAKS

AMERICANS ARE LEARNING to like whale meat. Other nations have always liked it, but we are slow to adopt what we consider foreign foods, altho there is nothing particularly foreign about the whale. The Food Administration is responsible for our early attempts at eating whale, but, according to a writer in The Scientific American (Now York, November 16), our liking bids fair to grow and spread after the emergency that gave rise to it has passed. During the war the production of whale meat has enabled us to keep the usual supply of domestic animals nearly normal and has released ample meats of other types for the maintenance of our military and naval forces. Plants for preparing whale meat, storage-houses for keeping it, and vessels for its distribution, are now scattered along the North Pacific coast. Seven stations have thus disposed of about one thousand whales this season —all of which we have eaten. Readers who have never knowingly consumed whale are invited to reflect on the fact that it tastes remarkably like beef. The original owner of that luscious steak you ate last night may possibly have swum the North Pacific instead of galloping about on the grassy plains of Texas. We read:

"The meat of the whale extends in great masses from the base of the skull to the tail fin and downward to the middle line, or completely over the rib section. This meat, all of it of the same quality, amounts to ten tons for each fifty feet of length and each fifty tons gross weight of the whale. Above these dimensions there may be fifteen tons of solid whale flesh of best eating quality. In other words, one-fifth of a whale is meat, without computing the other parts, such as the heart, etc., that are edible. The steer, being also a mammal, with nearly identical skeletonic structure, represents almost precisely the same proportions. That is to say, a steer weighing 1,000 pounds has 200 pounds of beef, but only a proportion of its meat of the first class such as characterizes nearly the whole whale flesh. A 50-foot, 50-ton whale, then, represents in bulk a herd of 100 steers of one-half ton weight each. He represents as much meat also as the herd. He is also equal to 500 sheep of 200 pounds each or to 300 hogs of 350 pounds each.

"Of course, steers range up to a ton of weight, with a corresponding increase of weight of flesh. But a whale also weighs up to 75 tons, representing a herd of 150 steers of a half-ton weight each. Any way you look at it, the whale has advantages over beef cattle. He requires no herdsmen or cowboys to care for him. He and his wife rear, feed, and guard their own young without any assistance from laborers. There is no cost to any one to feed him or his family; no food, clothes, or fuel to buy, with corresponding labor to produce them. When wanted, the whale is in his given haunts, ready to be taken. No butchering is required for him, the harpoon gun lands the fatal stroke. All you have to do is to haul him out and cut him up. The cost of whatever processes are required to put a whale on the market is so small in comparison with that of breeding and rearing a stow that Americans, like the Japanese, will soon have meat as good as the best parts of beef at probably not over fifteen cents per pound and in as large quantities as any family needs.......

"A whale is a mammal, not a fish. It produces its young alive and suckles them the same as a cow. Its flesh looks like that of beef, altho admittedly a little coarser in texture, and it has a slight flavor of venison. Whale steaks and roast whale have been served in several of the leading New York restaurants for some time past, having had a preliminary test at Delmonico's restaurant. New York chefs have developed the best methods of cooking and serving, and have found that it yields to as many forms of preparation as beef. There is little to distinguish it from beef, when served on the table, either in appearance, aroma, or taste. Many would be deceived into thinking it beef if not told what had been served. It is only in America that whale meat is a novelty. In Asia and elsewhere whale meat is the staple food.

"Whale meat has every advantage over beef—mutton— pork. In the first place, the whale is a diseaseless mammal, and its salt-water habitats contribute to its freshness, cleanness, digestibility, and healthfulness as food. On the contrary, cattle are subject to tuberculosis and foot-and-mouth and other diseases more or less communicable to humans. As an example, according to the statistics issued by the University of California, a billion pounds of pork are annually lost to America from hog-cholera. Sheep are subject to foot-and-mouth and other diseases. Disease also is destructive to immense numbers of the poultry

Hide & Seek

Hide & Seek

Ok this is about to take on quite a meaningful twist; initially i just wanted to do some photomanipulation, and loved the hide and seek concept for my test shoot.

But then i realised i am constantly playing hide and seek with myself, constantly covering my body, hiding behind the layers; trying to look slimmer by wearing more.

I'm currently trying to shed 2 stone, i eat salads, go for runs; no rubbish. I am a very happy person contempt apart from my weight it needs to be shifted for health reasons and to allow me to wear the clothes i want to; but rather than takling the problem i hid, wore clothes that sucked me in, coveref my arms and visually slimmed me down; but this is all a childs game hiding from what i knew i needed to do all along, loose weight!

go from 13st to 10-11st.
