Temple of Apollo at Delphi

Temple of Apollo at Delphi

Delphi (Greek: ??????) is both an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece on the south-western spur of Mount Parnassus in the valley of Phocis.

In Greek mythology, Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and a major site for the worship of the god Apollo after he slew the Python, a deity who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth. Python (derived from the verb pythein, "to rot") is claimed by some to be the original name of the site in recognition of the Python that Apollo defeated. The Homeric Hymn to Delphic Apollo recalled that the ancient name of this site had been Krisa.

Apollo's sacred precinct in Delphi was a panhellenic sanctuary, where every four years, starting in 586 BC, athletes from all over the Greek world competed in the Pythian Games, one of the four panhellenic (or stephanitic) games, precursors of the Modern Olympics. The victors at Delphi were presented with a laurel crown which was ceremonially cut from a tree in Tempe by a boy who re-enacted the slaying of the Python. Delphi was set apart from the other games sites because it hosted the mousikos agon, musical competitions. These Pythian Games rank second among the four stephanitic games chronologically and based on importance. These games, though, were different from the games at Olympia in that they were not of such vast Importance to the city of Delphi as the games at Olympia were to the city of Olympia. Delphi would have been a renowned city whether or not it hosted these games; it had other attractions that led to it being labeled the "omphalos" (navel) of the earth, in other words, the center of the world.

In the inner hestia ("hearth") of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned. After the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece, at Delphi; in the foundation stories of several Greek colonies, the founding colonists were first dedicated at Delphi.

The site of Delphi is located in lower central Greece, on multiple terraces along the slope of Mount Parnassus, and includes the Sanctuary of Apollo, the site of the ancient Oracle. This semicircular spur is known as Phaedriades, and overlooks the Pleistos Valley. Southwest of Delphi, about 15 km (9.3 mi) away, is the harbor-city of Kirrha on the Corinthian Gulf.

Excavations
The site had been occupied by the village of Kastri since medieval times. Before a systematic excavation of the site could be undertaken, the village had to be relocated but the residents understandably resisted. The opportunity to relocate the village occurred when it was substantially damaged by an earthquake, with villagers offered a completely new village in exchange for the old site. In 1893 the French Archaeological School removed vast quantities of soil from numerous landslides to reveal both the major buildings and structures of the sanctuary of Apollo and of Athena Proaea along with thousands of objects, inscriptions and sculptures.

Modern Delphi is situated immediately west of the archaeological site and hence is a popular tourist destination. It is on a major highway linking Amfissa along with Itea and Arachova. There are many hotels and guest houses in the town, and many taverns and bars. The main streets are narrow, and often one-way. Delphi also has a school, a lyceum, a church and a square (plateia).

The Trans European Footpath E4 passes through the east end of the town. In addition to the archaeological interest, Delphi attracts tourists visiting the Parnassus Ski Center and the popular coastal towns of the region. The town has a population of 2,373 people while the population of the municipality of Delphi, including Chrisso (ancient Krissa), is 3,511.

In medieval times Delphi was also called Kastri and was built on the archaeological site. The residents had used the marble columns and structures as support beams and roofs for their improvised houses, a usual way of rebuilding towns that were partially or totally destroyed, especially after the earthquake in 1580, which demolished several towns in Phocis. In 1893 archaeologists from the Ecole francaise d'Athenes finally located the actual site of ancient Delphi and the village was moved to a new location, west of the site of the temples.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum is at the foot of the main archaeological complex, on the east side of the village, and on the north side of the main road. The museum houses an impressive collection associated with ancient Delphi, including the earliest known notation of a melody, the famous Charioteer, golden treasures discovered beneath the Sacred Way, and fragments of reliefs from the Siphnian Treasury. Immediately adjacent to the exit (and overlooked by most tour guides) is the inscription that mentions the Roman proconsul Gallio.

Entries to the museum and to the main complex are separate and chargeable, and a reduced rate tick

Re-created highway scene on U.S. 66 east of Flagstaff, ca. 1965

Photo of old U.S. 66 east of Flagstaff looking toward San Francisco Peaks from point near Walnut Canyon National Monument.

Re-created billboards added to photo similar to what appeared in a photo shot of same location in early 1960s for 1964 book "God's Own Junkyard."

Among the motel, restaurant, gas station and tourist attraction signboards are a couple of signs for two successful 1965 automobiles including the Ford Mustang and the Wide-Track Pontiac (a Catalina 2+2 convertible), even included the names of the Flagstaff new-car dealerships selling them in '65 in the billboards.

Also added were side posts with white reflectors, and white center striping, which was used on 2-lane U.S. roadways prior to 1972 for broken centerlines - only solid "no passing" lines were painted yellow in those days.

Section of highway bypassed by I-40 in 1968 when Flagstaff was sidelined by the interstate.

Color-coded U.S. highway shields were authenic to Arizona at that time. Westbound denoted "blue," eastbound "brown", northbound "orange," and southbound "green."

US 180, which begins in Weatherford, TX and ends at the south rim of the Grand Canyon northwest of Flagstaff, ran concurrent with US 66 (and completed sections of I-40) from Holbrook to Flagstaff, and then veered northwest to the Canyon.

This Main Street hotel in the Thornton Park area of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is one of several that rents as a hostel, or by the day and week. They must adhere to a 10% limit but are suspected of exceeding it by advocates for the poor and homeless.

"If the city does not inspect and enforce the 10% rule in these hotels, we could lose as many as 452 units for low-income residents. With the Olympics coming in 2010 and hundreds of thousands of visitors expected, it is reasonable to expect some of these hotels may try to evict permanent residents in favour of tourists who can pay more."

Blue Mountains

The name Blue Mountains is derived from the blue tinge the range takes on when viewed from a distance. The tinge is caused by mie scattering which occurs when incoming ultraviolet radiation is scattered by particles within the atmosphere creating a blue-greyish colour to any distant objects, including mountains and clouds. It is widely, but incorrectly, believed that this is created by light reflecting off vapours from eucalypt leaves.

Sunrise at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore

I posted photos a few days ago of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at dawn, taken from the observation tower of my motel. After taking those photos I went to the beach at the lighthouse to watch the sunrise. I was the 3rd person at the beach. Over the next 20 minutes another 15 or people arrived, plus some surfers.

It was overcast that moring. I took around 10 photos. I wasn't too impressed with the sunrise at the time so I didn't post any photos on flickr when I returned home.

Looking over the series now that I've been home a couple of weeks I think the sunrise was more interesting than I originally thought, so here are a few photos. It wasn't the most magnificent sunrise I've seen, but it was still interesting.

This photo was taken a few seconds before I shot some photos of the surfers. I like the waves crashing into the beach.

The Chelsea Hotel

The Chelsea Hotel

The famous Chelsea Hotel (222, West 23rd St, New York City,
Manhattan) where Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols) died of a Heroin overdose in 1979.
Every room at the Chelsea tells its own story. In # 205, welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who reputedly inspired young Zimmerman to change his name to Bob Dylan, fell into a fatal coma after having 18 whiskies in a row. # 100 was once occupied by Sid Vicious, bass player with The Sex Pistols, and his girlfriend Nancy Spungeon. On the morning of October 11, 1978 Spungeon was found in the bathroom, stabbed to death.

Viscious, arrested under suspicion of murder, died shortly thereafter of a heroin overdose. Jimi Hendrix lived, loved and experimented here, with drugs and other things. Janis Joplin did not only have a love affair with Southern Comfort but also had a short liaison with Leonard Cohen. The canadian rock poet, too, loved the hotel: It's one of those hotels that have everything that I love so well about hotels. I love hotels to which, at four a.m., you can bring along a midget, a bear and four ladies, drag them to your room and no one cares about it at all.

His song Chelsea Hotel is not only a remembrance of past loves with the likes of Janis Joplin or Nico, it's also a declaration of love towards the hotel: I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel/ You were taking so brave and so free/ Giving me head on the unmade bed/ While the limousines wait in the street/ Those were the reasons and that was New York/ I was running for the money and the flesh/ That was called love for the workers in song/ Probably still is for those of us left.

The list of Big Names of literature, music or the arts scene who stayed at the Chelsea is seemingly bottomless: Jane Fonda, Jackson Pollock, Brendan Behan, Sarah Bernhardt to name but a few. They all encountered tragedies and comedies. They wrote short stories, movie scripts and novels and painted their pictures. They completed their movies within their heads, long before the actual shooting took place. Some of them had fatal endings...

For many, the Chelsea was a hideout or regular adress for many years, remembers Stanley Bard, who's been the hotel manager for almost 40 years now. Some of them lived here over decades. It was only recently that punk-icon Patti Smith moved out.

Stanley Bard appears to be friendly but keeps distance, on the other hand he's happy about reminicing every once in a while and he points out the bookcase in his office. I'm collecting every book that has been written in my hotel, he says taking out Thomas Wolfe's novel You Can't Go Home. Many things have happened here, he continues. Jim Morrison, Hendrix and Janis Joplin were having their drug parties here. Today, there's a 'No Smoking' sign in the hotel lobby.

For many years, Bob Dylan used to live in suite # 2011, # 411 was Janis Joplin's suite. Over the years, Leonard Cohen has lived in many rooms. I like to think of him, back then. He was one of the very few calm ones in these tumultous times. But perhaps his restlessness was better hidden than that of the others. Most of his time in New York in the sixties he was living at # 424. Long after this, Jon Bon Jovi wrote the song and shot his video for 'Midnight At Chelsea" in suite # 515.

But Bard refuses to talk about the mysterious Viscious/Spungeon murder case. That's a different story, he says but he's proud of Andy Warhol's love for the hotel. In the 60s, Warhol and Nico have done a movie, Chelsea Girl, at the hotel. All in all it has been a turbulent time back then, Stanley Bard resumes and wistfully finishes, I don't want to have missed any moment in the life of the Chelsea Hotel.

Capri - Calca all'ingresso della Funicolare

Capri - Calca all'ingresso della Funicolare

Puerto Vallarta Day One #1

Puerto Vallarta Day One #1

I just came back from an 8 days trip in Puerto Vallarta. I went to almost every corner of the town and encountered many fascinating people and places. I tried to capture everything on camera and I hope you will enjoy this series.

This is our first day in Puerto Vallarta. Arturo is the first guy we met at the airport. He said he could get us to our hotel free of charge. On top of that, we signed up to attend a presentation at a grand looking resort the next morning in exchange for a free breakfast and discounts on various tours. Seems like a good deal, right?

The view from my hotel room. In some ways, it's the most hi-tech. Hote
room I've been in. Almost managed to deal with breakfast entirely in
Spanish. Off soon to try and get to Puerto Vallarta. I don't have my
laptop, contrary to rumor, just my phone.

St. Andrews Castle

St. Andrews Castle

This site was fortified by the 1100s, and from around 1200 it was adopted as the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews. As such, the Castle became the principal administrative centre of the Scottish Church and was the setting for some of the key events in Scottish history.

Little of this early Castle can be traced through the existing ruins. Certainly almost nothing remains of the earliest structure which suffered badly during the Wars of Independence and was finally rendered indefensible by the Scots in 1337 to avoid it again being held by the English.

Completed in about 1400, the "new" castle was the work of Bishop Trail. With steep cliffs protecting it to the north and east, thick curtain walls and rock cut ditches on its landward side it was built to be easily defended.

Within these walls were five square towers providing residence for the bishop, his large household and guests. Ranges were built along the inside of each length of curtain wall and further accommodation was provided in outer courtyards to the south and west.

As a residence, St Andrews Castle saw many notable visitors, including the young James I who visited in 1410. The castle also served as a strong and grim prison. An especially striking remnant of this role is the Bottle Dungeon, a bottle shaped pit dug 22ft down into the rock below the Sea Tower and accessible only via the narrow neck opening through a trap door from the floor of tower vault. Into this prisoners could simply be lowered - or dropped - and forgotten.

Further significant work on the Castle at St Andrews were undertaken by Archbishop James Beaton in the early 1500s following the Battle of Flodden. This was designed to withstand an attack by heavy artillery. Two massive circular gun towers, called blockhouses, were built on the landward side and heavy carriage-mounted guns were positioned at the wall tops.

Beaton appointed as his successor his nephew Cardinal David Beaton, an ambitious man who was already a prominent figure in both the religious and political life of the time. He was also a man who knew how to lose friends more readily than make them. His strong opposition to the marriage of the infant Mary, Queen of Scots to Prince Edward, son and heir of Henry VIII of England was a major factor leading to renewed warfare between the two countries in 1544.

Not satisfied with this, in March 1546, he had the Protestant preacher, George Wishart, burnt at the stake in front of the castle walls. This was subsequently used as a pretext for Beaton's grisly murder at the hands of local Protestant lairds who captured the castle by stealth.

A long siege followed on the orders of the Regent, the Earl of Arran. By November 1546 this had resulted in a stalemate that the besiegers sought to break with what has given rise to St Andrews Castle's second most chilling underground artifact after the Bottle Dungeon.

A determined effort to undermine the walls of the castle via a spacious tunnel large enough to take pack animals was intercepted, after several false starts, by the defenders. They dug a low, narrow and twisting countermine through the rock that eventually broke into the mine itself. Visitors are able to make their way down the countermine and into the mine, though it's not somewhere for those with claustrophobia or an overly active imagination.

The siege was eventually settled, decisively, in 1547 with the arrival of a French fleet which reduced the castle to ruins (see our Historical Timeline). Amongst those captured when the castle fell was John Knox.

St Andrews Castle passed next to the illegitimate brother of the Regent Earl of Arran, Archbishop John Hamilton. Although finally hanged after he was implicated in the death of Lord Darnley, he was able to rebuild most of the castle in his lifetime. The result was a much more grand and elaborate structure than the fortress it replaced.

The Reformation of the Scottish Church in 1560 had little immediate effect on the castle and its operation, but over time it became increasingly neglected. Its association with the church seemed permanently severed in 1606 when it passed to the Earl of Dunbar, but it did later return to church control before finally falling into ruin after the ascendancy of William and Mary in 1689.

Edzell Castle gardens

Edzell Castle gardens

The Lindsay Earls of Crawford obtained Edzell by marriage in 1358 and the castle remained with them until debts forced them to sell in 1715. They started the castle in the 15th century, and when the medieval accommodation became too cramped for them, built the extensive outbuildings to the west and north during the 16th and 17th centuries. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here (as she did almost every Scottish castle it would seem), as did her son James VI on two occasions.

The finest feature of the castle today is its walled garden. After the Lindsays sold up, the castle fell on hard times, suffering firstly at the hands of the government troops that were garrisoned there during the ’45, and later at the hands of creditors, who stripped it of anything of value, including much of the stonework, and the beech trees that once lined the drive. Despite the depredations of the last couple of centuries, the red sandstone remains are still a fine sight, are open to the (paying) public and are well worth a visit - particularly of course, the garden in summer!

("Dum spiro spero" (see the topiary in the photo) is Latin for "While I breathe, I hope"!)

Sun Hat Model

Sun Hat Model

We're in Portland this week so the Skipper can attend to shore-related matters.

Among other things, I've used this break from cruising to shop for my upcoming trip to Ecuador this fall.

Using the Photo Booth feature on the Skipper's Mac, a lamp from our ultra-hip inn in Portland's uber-cool Northwest district, and Photo Shop, I've assembled a composite showing the sun hat I plan to wear in Quito the Galapagos to protect myself from those horrible sun rays.

I bought it at Portland's own Columbia Sportswear®. The hat is made from a fairly heavy miracle fabric that's supposed to cool your noggin far more efficiently than other manufacturers' miracle fabrics. I'll report back on whether this is just an extension of the P.T. Barnum school of marketing ("There's a sucker born every day") or whether the product lives up to the claims.

Since the Galapagos are (mostly) uninhabited, I won't have to worry about trying not to look like a total Gringo pendejo to Ecuadorians.

Anyway, I'll accomplish that with or without the hat, since I believe most Latin Americans probably think the US engineered the recent coup in Honduras. Other nationalists such as Morales, Chavez and Ecuador's own Correa are too prominent and their constituencies too large to take down the old fashioned way, but we've been messing with Central American nations' internal affairs with coups for well over a century to protect US interests and Central American oligarchs.

But I digress.

As for the fauna, they've had to put up with indignities from Homo Sapiens ever since the buccaneers and the early explorers began stopping at the Galapagos to reprovision.

That includes the revered Chas. Darwin, who spent an enjoyable hour or two tossing a Marine Iguana into a tide pool to observe its behavior. Answer: It always swam back to the place from which it had been launched, once it thought the coast was clear, which it wasn't, since Mr. Darwin was waiting there to fling it back into the water. What Darwin learned from this, as from all his other studies in the field, was actually quite significant; in this case, as to what makes Marine Iguanas tick, though it's unlikely his subject would have agreed.

Darwin was also a connoisseur of tortoise meat, knowledge he gained from personal experience and from conversations with locals. I think that's a subject he spends far, far too much time on in his chronicle of his time in the Galapagos.

Like the revered Audubon, Darwin's professional obligations required him to kill "specimens" of almost every animal he encountered so it could be sent back to London and studied. That's just the way it was.

Just read or listen to The Voyage of the Beagle.

So with that history, I doubt any of the endemic species who populate the islands will give a good gosh darn what I have on my head, or whether I even have a head.

As for my fellow passengers, well, it's my epidermis, isn't it? At least I won't have to worry about looking too gay.

Qoricancha : Incas Temple of the Sun in Cusco of Peru

Qoricancha : Incas Temple of the Sun in Cusco of Peru

The temple of the Sun or Koricancha is located in the southern part of the city of Cusco. Seen from the South, it looks like a pyramid, because the temple was built on a natural hill that was in its time the main temple.

The temple was built during the reign of the Inca Wiracocha around the year 1200 A.D., and later with the Inca Pachacutec the temple was embellished or decorated. Around the temple there were many buildings like the Palace of Huayna Ccapac, the palace of Kusicancha, the Inn of Kunturpata and the Inticancha Plaza.

Many chroniclers, historians, travelers and critics have written about this monument, and it's believed that from this temple the incas took most of the treasure to pay the release of the Inca Atahuallpa, captured by the spaniards. This treasure was made up of more than 700 plates of gold that weighed 10 to 12 pounds, and the smaller ones weighed 4 to 5 pounds. Also historians claim that idols were taken as well as utensils and other objects, in total they filled up one room with gold and two rooms with silver objects.
