instinctual apprehension.

when we pulled over i instantly felt frightened, like people were hiding in those thick trees that obscured the house, smiling while simultaneously aiming loaded shotguns at my face.

there was a path lined with recyclable plastic containers that lead through the trees to the front porch steps, i walked towards them tensed with extreme caution. i stood at the foot of those stairs for several minutes, quiet & still, scared & confused. i looked around in all directions, trying to catch a glimps of whatever it was that made me feel so surrounded. it felt as though there were people all around me, standing right next to me even. i would here sounds like shoes kicking through the trash on the ground, things seemed to move from secret vantage points just out of range of the corners of my eyes. but i saw no one.

the house was very obviously abandoned. cobwebbed & dust-caked & rotted & grown-over, all the trash & clothes & housewares & personal mementos heaped into careless piles all over the front yard & porch, trademarked to the way most abandoned houses are decorated.
it was abandoned, no one had lived there in ages, it was obvious.

but i stood there on that front porch & hesitated for a century looking at that doorknob. i felt eyes on me, peering at me through frayed curtains. i was sure, almost positive, that i'd find a room full of sinister strangers waiting for me behind that door. they were all huddled together in there, waiting as quietly as they could, containing themselves like some kind of wicked surprise party.
i was so sure those people were there that i knocked on that fucking door. i knocked with my knuckles & choked out an uneasy "hello?", which sounded so ridiculous in my ears that i immediately discarded my seemingly misplaced caution & reached out for the old doorknob. my eyes saw nothing to indicate a threat, it was intangible & therefor did not exist. i was being stupid.

i twisted the knob, it rattled & the door gave easily. i pushed it half open & looked in at the living room, stunned still for a moment by an instant spike of anxiety, thinking in my gut i'd see the strangers seated there in the mismatched couches & chairs.
i saw no one.
i entered a few steps & froze there in that living room. i didn't explore the house any further. my feet had turned to stone. something landed on my chest heavy like a cinder block. something was terribly wrong.

i stared wild-eyed like a stray cat at those couches & chairs, feverishly scanning them over & over again, looking for those seated strangers, they were there among the garbage & my eyes were somehow unable to catch them. the insticnt was heavy & overwhelming, they were there. but i couldn't see them, there was no evidence, my eyes couldn't verify the notion that gripped my mind. it was confusing to all my senses. it was terrifying.

i was standing like a statue in the front doorway facing a long hallway lined with doors all open a crack, the hallway ended with a door & wound left at it, & from around that corner there was a sound growing faintly louder, a sound like weakly running water, a drizzling sink faucet or a leak in the roof letting rain in, landing on a soft plastic surface with a dull dripping drone.
i felt certain that around that corner there waited a flesh-&-blood creature, seeking the perfect second to pounce & attack.

the thing i feared about that hallway wasn't the thought that i'd find a person at the end of it, it was the fact that i'd find nothing at all. there were people all around me & i knew it, & somehow my eyes were blind to them. the threat was powerfully real, & it had the advantage of being invisible.
my legs became agile then, & i was suddenly moving with the speed & precision of an animal escaping danger. i turned my pointed toes towards the door & all but leaped out onto the screened porch, carrying the doorknob with me in my tightly gripped fingers, securely shutting the danger inside behind the closed door.

i began to walk quick & silent down the stairs but stopped dead in my tracks when i heard a noise from behind me. it was the soft metal rattling of that doorknob, turning. i turned & sharply focused my eyes on the door as it swung open fast & stopped suddenly after opening only a crack, just big enough to fit your face through, to see in (or out).

a tiny bomb went off in my head & sent shockwaves down my spine, turning me feather-light on my feet as i raced up the steps & took hold of the doorknob again, slamming it tightly shut, wearing an expression almost like outrage, like a prank was being played on me that had gotten old. i scowled at the splintery white door hoping that whatever was behind it could see how out of patience i was, then turned & made my escape through the trees, down the path, to the empty street where my car waited, exhail
