I was walking on the street with my camera in my hand, and then I heard "Foto, foto!". It was the guy with the mustache. I guess he thought I was not going to take his request seriously, cause when I turned to him he didn't believe I actually listened to him. "Ok, I'll take your photo". The guy in the back really posed for this one. The plastic bottle in the hand of the mustached one, is not water. I think is some mix of something for wiping glass.
These people work under traffic lights, cleaning windshields during red lights. They don't ask for money, but they hope they'll get some coins.
I promised to bring back a couple of prints of the photo for them.

Another windshield shot from my drive home. This one is exactly how it came out of the camera, just resized. I love that I was able to catch the wiper blade in motion!

Black Five steam loco 45186 undergoes repairs at Oxley

Black Five steam loco 45186 undergoes repairs at Oxley

With less than month till closure of Oxley 2B shed near Wolverhampton repairs are still being carried out.

On February 18th 1967 Black Five No. 45186 is in the lifting shop and is having attention to the cylinders.

45186 was a regular Oxley loco till closure of that shed and saw out its days at Crewe South 5B for a few more months.

Withdrawn in September 1967 it was cut up at Arnott & Young West of Scotland Shipbreaking Co. Troon in March 1968.

The site of Oxley shed is now used for the storage and maintenance of the Pendelino (sic) express trains for the Euston services.

Taken with an old Kodak Brownie Twin 20 Camera.
Kodak 120 Black and White film.

The resulting negative was a difficult one to print in the old ‘wet’ darkroom with the exposure correct for the foreground but the inside of the shed very underexposed.

I had better luck with digital technology.
The negative was scanned with an Epson 4490 using Vuescan® (I never use bundled scanner software). I experimented with the Vuescan® settings eventually deciding on B&W negative, Kodak TMax 400 D76 Cl.40 in the colour tab.
The resulting 16 bit raw file was saved as a Photoshop dng file.
From this I processed the file to expose correctly for the foreground which further washed out the shadow detail inside the shed and saved the file in psd format.
The dng file was processed for a second time and exposed for the shadow areas to bring out as much detail as was available inside the shed. This second psd file completely blew out the highlight detail.
The two files were then layered together and using layer masks the correct detail from each file was revealed.
Once merged the image required a further few hours to clean followed by further exposure correction using levels layers set to different blending modes.

The result a better print than I had seen in over 40 years.

Rolleiflex 3.5F repair - the inner workings

Rolleiflex 3.5F repair - the inner workings

Yesterday the shutter on my Rolleiflex 3.5F jammed open. I am lucky to live near possibly the only Rollei-trained repair technician in the Southern Hemisphere, the 84-year old Mr Sargon Evanian. Just a quick phone call and I was round at his house, sipping Ribena while he took the machine to bits on the garden table. It was a windy day and I was quite worried that the many screws and tiny baffles that he removed would either get lost or be blown onto the ground. It is just amazing to watch this master craftsman at work. An octogenarian, he still has the dexterity of a 20-year old! He quickly diagnosed the problem as a broken spring (the camera is almost 50 years old), and even more amazingly, HE HAD A SPARE IN STOCK in his shed. After stripping down the side of the camera to reveal the inner workings, the broken spring was quickly replaced, and he soon had my beloved machine working again. They don't make 'em like that any more!
A big thank you to this generous and very capable man.

Computers can be stupid

Computers can be stupid

It's stuff like this that makes me understand why people like my mom don't like technology.

Keyboard Error or no keyboard detected.
Press f1 to continue, DEL to enter setup.

2 weeks after my last computer wouldn't start, all the new parts have come in for me to build a new one and I get this.

Even though USB keyboards have been around for about 8 years, motherboard designers I guess are too lazy to set it up for the keyboard to not have to use the old purple PS2 connector. If you haven't a PS2 keyboard, the computer will wait and wait and wait.

Have no fear! There is a setting I can change in setup to disable "Halt on Keyboard Errors" and yet another setting to allow USB keyboards into setup. But you need a PS2 keyboard to get there in the first place. Why do these settings have to be set the wrong way by default?

If all I needed was an old school PS2 keyboard, we'd have a happy ending and I'd have a chuckle. I dug through my junk closet and found an old keyboard in the 4th box down. I hooked it up and turned the computer back on and still got the same message. That tells me I've got a bad keyboard connector on the motherboard.

Now, it's a 3 day weekend and on monday I'll have to send it back and get a new one and it's going to be another week. In the meantime, I've filled my 8GB and then the 2GB memory cards on my camera and I have hundreds of photos to upload to flickr.

Windows errors

Windows errors

This is more what the user dreams of seeing, rather than a real error. In the late 90's, i had to move across the country. I packed up my Linux computer, noting that it had been up for sometime over 430 days. I mentioned it on some forum, and people replied, "what, no updates for over a year?" But, as a matter of fact, i'd added a couple devices - a parallel port web cam and a SCSI scanner. I already had the SCSI interface card for a disk drive. These are hot plug in, and Linux has dynamically installable drivers. No reboot. In the mean time, I had several months long computations going on.

As I grow older, I find myself hankering after my past. Particularly - memories of childhood. It is with this desire that inevitably displays itself in what I try to re-create or create, and it is in this medium that I find I can best express myself in.

The desire for what I cannot relive awakened itself recently when my Portable Hard Disk died and could not be revived. Memories of a year ago all washed away. It seems that the only way I can get my pictorial memories back would be to pay a few thousand dollars and those I do not have. Although if I did have that amount and if the decreasing utility(utliity curve) did not burn a hole in my small pocket, I would have gone for it. I seemed to have lost a part of my brain with that. My parent did not share the same sentiment as me obviously. For the parent did not even wish to depart with anything more than $100 for a surface repair (even when it was me who was paying).

Lesson learnt, I triple backed-up all my data. My memories, I pray I will spend my whole lifetime creating and re-creating, better yet spend good time with the people around me before all I have of them is a 5 megabyte file.

Me and Jenny in the Dark

Me and Jenny in the Dark

For 365 Days: 40 years and 147 days.

I can't fix the brightness on this because the computer with photoshop, my laptop, is dead. The hard drive has been flaking out for some time now. For a while it would do the blue screen of death about once a day. But I was able to run the disk cleanup utilities and get it a bit more stable for the last couple months. Overnight it crashed though and won't boot into windows anymore.

I've used a linux livecd to boot the system up, mount the drives and copy the important files out. (It's most frustrating that while Windows is completely dead in the water, Linux can read anything on the disk without problem.)

Anyway, I don't know if I'll be able to repair or replace the laptop any time soon.

You can wash it in the kitchen sink. And it still won't work!!

Now they have sent me a CD to fix it. The CD is blank. The printer does not work. At all. Yes, a yellow light flashes.

When I call the call centre, they ask me to unplug it, the yellow light then does not flash.

How cool is that is, no? What do you do if HP sells you an 18 month old printer as "new" and "Vistas Compliant", and then it doesn't work at all?

Well, there is somebody called "Tanuja Lall", (lall.tanuja@hp.com . . . ) who looks after non-working printers at HP. Yes, they actually have a person doing that. The best that her Product Specialist, Mr. Sudip Ranjan Pal could do, was to ask me to plug/unplug the power cord and the USB jack. After that, they sent me a CD, to make it work on Vistas, which does not do anything to the obsolete HP printer sold as new. It simply does not work on any computer now, including a Mac.

The other thing is to make sure you check the date of manufacture when you buy an HP product. Like when you buy milk, fruit, fish, noodles, tyres, or veggies from the veggie cart outside on the road. Same sort of guys and ladies at HP. The printer I got last month was made in Jan'2006 in Thailand, if you please. Then shipped to India in Jun'2006. After that it rotated from one place to the other and finally was delivered to me in April'2007. Presumably the insides became porridge while it went from coast to coast, winter to summer, dry to humid, summer to winter. So, one new idea on what such obsolete HP printers are good for, everyday:-

Repair Master Boot Record Windows Xp

repair master boot record windows xp

    boot record
  • A boot sector is a sector of a hard disk, floppy disk, or similar data storage device that contains code for booting programs (usually, but not necessarily, operating systems) stored in other parts of the disk.

  • Once the BIOS determines which disk to boot from, it loads the first sector of that disk into memory and executes it.   Besides this loader program, the Boot Record contains the partition table for that disk.  If the Boot Record is damaged, it can be a very serious situation!

  • A part of the boot area or files that contain the instructions needed to start up a computer. Boot records are infected by viruses allowing a virus to install itself into memory during startup.

    windows xp
  • Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, and media centers. It was first released in August 2001, and is currently one of the most popular versions of Windows. The name "XP" is short for "eXPerience."

  • is the upcoming version of Microsoft's OS. There will be both a Windows XP Professional version and a Windows XP consumer version. The new OS promises to feature more multimedia capabilities and better integration with portable devices.

  • Powerful Windows operating system that provides reliability, robustness, and ease of use for both corporate and home PC users.

    repair
  • Fix or mend (a thing suffering from damage or a fault)

  • Make good (such damage) by fixing or repairing it

  • Put right (a damaged relationship or unwelcome situation)

  • restore by replacing a part or putting together what is torn or broken; "She repaired her TV set"; "Repair my shoes please"

  • the act of putting something in working order again

  • a formal way of referring to the condition of something; "the building was in good repair"

    master
  • Gain control of; overcome

  • be or become completely proficient or skilled in; "She mastered Japanese in less than two years"

  • chief(a): most important element; "the chief aim of living"; "the main doors were of solid glass"; "the principal rivers of America"; "the principal example"; "policemen were primary targets"; "the master bedroom"; "a master switch"

  • Acquire complete knowledge or skill in (an accomplishment, technique, or art)

  • Make a master copy of (a movie or record)

  • maestro: an artist of consummate skill; "a master of the violin"; "one of the old masters"

One of the springs near Furnace Creek used to be routed down this ditch. When they rerouted the ditch, here's what happened to be trees.

This photo appeared in the following ideotrope albums:

Biking the Mojave Fall 2007 - Introduction
I biked through Death Valley in October 1996. It was 109°F at Furnace Creek. The area is beautiful, but it was way too hot at that time of year. I knew I wanted to come back on my bicycle when it was cooler. This year it worked out to take about 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. I ended up spending 18 days to cycle from Palm Springs to Las Vegas. I spent about half of that time in Death Valley NP. In Baker I met a group of cyclists on racing bikes with a support vehicle. They were cycling from Palm Springs to Las Vegas in 2 days. I saw a lot more desert than they did.
Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
I crossed the Coachella Valley on Ramon Rd. It was over 70°F, probably the warmest day of the trip. It wasn't 'til I turned onto Thousand Palms Rd. that I felt like I was heading out into the desert on my own. The San Andreas Fault system runs along the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The faults allow groundwater to rise to the surface resulting in a number of California fan palm oases. It's wonderful to see oases in the desert.
It was a 1300m climb on Berdoo Canyon Rd. to the Coachella Valley-Pleasant Valley saddle in Joshua Tree NP. I didn't see a single person or vehicle in Berdoo Canyon. Climbing out of Pleasant Valley I saw the first person, a fellow adventurer. Patrick was walking solo across Joshua Tree NP from west to east. That's a heck of a trek. That park is huge and has only one known spring. Patrick had set up two water caches before his trip.
Amboy Road and Mojave National Preserve
I bought enough food in 29 Palms to last 4 days to Baker. Heading east on the Amboy Rd. I met the only other touring cyclist of the trip. He had come down from Bishop through Death Valley NP, Baker, Kelso, Amboy - much the same route I was planning to take. When I met him, he had run out of food. I shared some almonds with him but didn't have much sympathy with his plight. The reason he didn't buy food in Baker was because there wasn't a health food store! Well, I told him there was a grocery store in 29 Palms, but it might not be up to his standard.
One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was experiencing the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert (lower, farther south) and the Mojave Desert (higher, farther north). Creosote bushes grow in both, but most other flora is limited to one ecosystem or the other. In the transition zones you can see a mix of vegetation. What I saw ended up being less dramatic than Washington County, Utah where the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range country, and the Mojave Desert all come together. Joshua Trees were the main ecosystem indicator for me. I knew I was climbing high when I started to see them.
I was surprised how much traffic there was on the Amboy Rd. It wasn't much, but a lot of the paved roads that I was on during the trip would have one car every 10-30 minutes and perhaps none all night. The only truly busy roads were the road north out of Baker (on a Saturday morning) and the Pahrump-Las Vegas superhighway which has a wonderful bicycle lane.
I climbed Sheep Hole Pass to get into the Amboy Valley. It was in the Amboy Valley where I became accustomed two aspects important to cyclists in the Mojave:
Distances are deceiving. You can see really far. It takes much longer to cross these valleys that it appears that it would.
The slight inclines up alluvial fans or other fill climb a lot more than they appear to. In Colorado I'm not accustomed to seeing the whole climb since there are usually canyon climbs here. Leaving Amboy, for example, I climbed over 3000 ft. on a slowly rising alluvial plane. It took hours.
I enjoyed time off the bike to walk out to and up Amboy Crater. The following day I climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes. And one day later I climbed one of the cinder cones east of Baker. I enjoyed having a diversion each day. Each of those areas is beautiful in its own way. The creosote bushes in the Amboy Valley are particularly green because of the shallow water table. Kelso Dunes are simply fantastic, and the cinder cone area with over 30 cinder cones and not another person felt like another planet.
In Baker I bought enough food to last 10 days and ate at the Mad Greek at my brother's recommendation. I had taken a rest day the previous day because of rain, and Baker was a bit flooded. Folks were out pushing water around with brooms. At the store the locals were telling each other how much their roofs leaked.
Death Valley National Park
Heading north of Baker the saddle that separates the Silurian Valley from Death Valley is only about a 50' climb. From there I left the pavement and stopped at Sara

I was surprised to learn that I'd actually have to ascend to get to Furnace Creek at ~200' below sea level.

shooting data :

Panasonic DMC-LX1
lens : 28-112 mm ( 16:9 ) : 38 mm
program auto exposure : - 1.33 EV
manual focussing : 3-6 feet zone setting, 6-15 feet zone setting
ISO : 80
date : Wed. 23 Aug. 2006
place : the upper deck of my junction station, JR Higashi-Kanagawa station south-east area, Yokohama canal, on the road of Route 15

JR --- Japan Railroad or something
higashi --- east

note :
I used my LX1 on 28 mm with 3-6 feet zone setting and 6-15 feet zone setting.
I used 3-6 feet zone setting for the person.
and I used 6-15 feet zone setting for the canal mainly.

and naturally,
LX1's battery was dead in 2 hours usually.
That was the place just near the main road to my Dai-koku Pier.

...

my frivolities

I went shooting with LX1 and W5.
W5 was using for the evening and night.
my W5 has f 2.8 and f 5.6.
and my W5 still had made stains on f 5.6 at that night.
but in the night, it is very hard to get f 5.6 naturally.
so I could use my W5 in my Dai-koku Pier with manual exposure for the evening and with auto exposure for the night.

I had to use my W5 by manual focussing with f 2.8.
but I did the normal mistake naturally again.

at first,
I had been shooting my W5 by manual focussing with f 2.8.
and soon I had been shooting my W5 by manual focussing with f 5.6.
and soon later I had been shooting my W5 with auto exposure entirely.
I found it on my Dai-koku Oo-hashi ( big bridge ) in the night.
I had already been shooting over 200 jpgs until then.
My memory stick pro could accept only around 250 jpgs plainly.
I couldn't do my shooting from the evening again.
It had already all been passing.

All the causes had been hidden in my W5's tiny little pushing buttons.
It comes from my frivolities.

...

Leica M8

my W5 had already come back from SONY for repairing with no cost.
so,
I don't have a need to use my frivolities any more.
the manual exposure setting was not my shooting style naturally.

I had been shooting by manual exposure in my film lording type camera days.
The film lording type camera days could not be coming any more for me probably.
That has two simply reasons,
One is from my monetary reason.
and the other,
Leica had released Leica M8 already.

The most of all someone had been saying like this.
" I only shoot film ! "

The monetary reason person had been using the plastic digital cameras.
With no monetary reason person would be soon using Leica M8 naturally.

I have been simply loved Leica since 1978.
M8 is my too much more more far away dreaming still now.

My front page "A Generation X Manifesto"

My front page

I wrote this in November 1994 - It was my response to all the anti-GenX rhetoric and we were inundated with.

A Generation X Manifesto

"Every generation blames the one before" - Mike and the Mechanics

"Slackers," "hackers," "moaners," "loners," "losers," "lollygaggers," "lollapaloozers," "anarchists," "anachronisms," "apathetic," "disaffected," "shifters," "drifters," "dropouts," "castaways," and "'Gilligans Island' junkies" are some of names the media pins on us. As if we deserve them! Generation X is a label. But whose label and whose definition? Our generation is not matured yet, so how can we name what's undecided? We seem to be a generation, not united by one cause, but by a seemingly endless number of causes. Perhaps X isn't so bad. It lacks specific implications. It, in a round about sort of way, accurately describes this generation, by not giving us a name, but a blank to fill in. No generation can be summed up in one name.

This generation is based on irony. Some merchandisers even target us with their products based on unattractiveness. Beverages are sold because they are not popular. Take the term "alternative." It means, as far as music goes, other than mainstream. Look at Billboard's top one hundred and you will see at least 35 of the top fifty songs are labeled alternative. Consumers are buying into the labels merchandisers place on songs, declaring them alternative when they are actually mainstream. Everything we do seems to be BTDT (Been There, Done That).

If we listen to what we call new music, our elders say it is only the music they listened to when they were kids, and our versions are less desirable. They should be flattered that we enjoy their music. Instead, they smile in smug satisfaction as if we aren't good enough to create our own. But we need peace and quiet to make something original and not to be discouraged by them or bombarded by the media 24 hours a day.

We are original in one respect: we are the first generation to live its entire sexual maturity under the threat of AIDS! While elders lived through war and "Leave it to Beaver," we live through the beginning of AIDS and MTV. In groups like Monument Mountain Regional High School's AIDS Coalition we deal with AIDS ourselves and take our destiny in our own hands. People faced syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, and genital warts until well into this century without the aid of penicillin, but there weren't any Syphilis coalitions, or student-operated Herpes Prevention groups. This is only one of the crushing burdens of the present moment that leads members of my generation to despair, and despair results in substance abuse, car wrecks, STD's, violence and suicide. "Sex, drugs and rock & roll," has been replaced by "AIDS, crack and rap & punk."

To avoid becoming conformists, we have to walk our own path. We have to reject the labels given to us by the media. The media works to define us and shape our morals and decisions. It asks us to take its ideals and call them our own. This is something we must not do. We have used the media in a constructive way by making it work for us instead of against us, educating people about problems that besiege our tiny planet, and suggesting ways to solve them.

Like every generation of young people, we are never sure whether we should act like children or adults. Throughout our lives we are told to "act our age" or to be "more grown up." We are not trusted or given the same rights as adults, yet we are often expected to complete an equal, if different, workload. We are told we don't have the mentality or maturity to fully understand all the consequences that go along with responsibility. Our elders seem to think knowledge will hurt us until we are old enough to "understand."
