Examining themes of fashion and consumption, we will present durational performances and installation works in this former furniture store's windows. Questions regarding the relationship of art and commerce today are myriad, and while there are no simple answers, most observers agree that there are many troubling implications of the influences of speculation, branding and celebrity on the current climate. Giving away the aesthetic experience through such a temporary event is a return to earlier, more idealistic times, yet placing the work within a shopping district anchors it to the realistic present. We imagine this to be an exciting event which will attract art audiences, as well as provide an unusual experience to passers-by.
Jordan Biren and Corrina Peipon present a tableau/performance, "The Exchange of the Avant-Garde" inspired by quotes taken from a recent Norman Klein discussion of the late Jean Baudrillard:
"...avant-garde strategies are now central to the branding of all products..."
"...The simulacrum was simply the original itself. It had emerged as the glowing center of all global branding...It was simply the mood that sold anything. "
The tableau represents the "look" of a business transaction, while an inner dialogue belies conflicted psychological realities of personal negotiation through a world of branded transactions. With the supporting text contradicting the appearance of the action, only the image of the event remains, an image meant to draw attention to the presumptions, or "branded" recognition, of what is taking place. A search for what defines in what we see that which we are told we are seeing. _
Nancy Buchanan's "3 Fates" sees myth reduced to marketing; throughout cultural history, sacred and mythic women have appeared in threes, sometimes also merging into one mythic figure. In Greek mythology, the three Fates personified destiny and controlled the thread of life from birth to death (and beyond). The Greek word moira (_____) translates as a part or portion—and so, one's fate is the part one is destined to play in life. While their forerunners were draped in white, could the gowns worn by these fashionable "Fates" hint at what lies beyond fashion? Siren-red satin, prison-jumpsuit orange, camouflage (with glitter).
In Ashley McLean Emenegger's "Judgment Day," colorful felt cut out dolls hang in the balance above a miniature, faux mythological environment, the Garden of Eden meets a metaphoric apocalyptic collapse, where the yearning for sincere expression clashes with the expectation and imposition of compliance to the contemporary notion of aesthetics. Beckoned by the allure and idealization of the Promised Land below, the dolls, both identical and unique, are naturally confused by the conundrum of self declaration versus the desire to fit in.
MaryLinda Moss collaborates with Nikii Henry to create a Performative Installation. Through the evening figures moving through space will leave an imprint, a record of the presence of the body in the world. Using gauze and plaster, 'clothing" will be formed on the body. As the body moves on, it's image is left behind to create a record of the journey through time and space
Danial Nord addresses the troubling relationships between art and commerce, and the implications and influences of speculation, branding and celebrity on the current art-making climate. His inspiration comes from Hollywood's historical misrepresentation of artists, and overheard dialogues between dealers and potential clients at recent Art Fairs. Nord's installation centers on a projected clip from the film "On the Town" which shows a ballerina as an artist, described in the film as "the perfect urban woman", making a painting.
Cielo Pessione & John O'Brien create a tableau in which two personages appear in the dark at the center of the space, like a players in a theatre. The female personage will have a pile of rags or fashion magazines under her She could be a Queen, he a Poet. Each has a different style of dress, which means different ways to live and to consider the capitalism of attire.

For years, Jason has wanted the "Buster" chair from Restoration Hardware. And he watched as the price kept creeping up, up, up -- I think the list price is $2400+ now. Which is a lot of money. And then today... someone put one up on Craigslist. For cheap. :) So now Jason has a Buster chair of his very own. Though Sherman might take it over. ;)

The seat cushion needs to be restuffed, but otherwise it is just fine.

HBW ! Some of you are wondering where's the bokeh. The green background is real bokeh (some bamboo in my backyard) and I have water droplets bokeh too. :P

This was my first attempt at a fast shutter speed shot. I own a tripod but not a self remote control so this was hard as heck to do at first. My DH then assisted me and dropped the cherries. I am tempted to try this again to perfect the technique. :-)

I've always thought this is a good personification of Love or charity, not because (as some think) the woman is holding someone else's child, but because parenting and the care for a child is such an epitome of Love. Urbana, IL Mumford House with Carillon

The Mumford House was constructed in 1870 as a model farmhouse on the Univeristy of Illinois experimental farms south of the main campus. It's plan was straight out of Andrew Jackson Downing's seminal "The Architecture of Country Houses: Including Designs for Cottages, and Farm-Houses and Villas, With Remarks on Interiors, Furniture, and the best Modes of Warming and Ventilating".

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP #89001728 aka Farm House).

Even though this is the oldest original building left at the university, they want to move it 3 miles to the southeast to make way for a landscape plan for the new Sarah “Sally” McFarland Carillon (from the scuttle I heard the University made some agreement with the donor that the house would either be demolished or moved so as not to detract from the carillon).

The university is using the excuse that the house needs too much work (from 20 years of NO maintenance).

The Mumford House was placed on Landmarks Illinois 10 Most Endangered in 2006 and also has been written up by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Sky House with Spaceport

After we built our Arts and Crafts dream home, we wondered, "Um ... so what are we going to do with all this Art Deco stuff we picked up?" We love Art Deco too!

So ... we built another house.

This one's at 500 meters, and is a prefab by Damanios Thetan. Ryan really went to town on this one, and although we don't use it as much as we'd like, we love all the lounging areas and artwork we've collected and Deco furniture. One of these days I'll do a photo-tour.

In the background is our landing pad, where we were planning to store some of our cooler spacecraft, but alas, we don't have enough prims left. :-(

The Hospitality Continues

Day 2: I had a great day of riding through the Amish country---you just have to be careful when passing the horse and buggies. I was feeling good all day so I called ahead to a Mennonite Your Way contact in Biglerville, which would make the day just short of 90 miles. No one was home but I left my number anyway. The contact, Bob ended up calling me back when I was about 13 miles away. He said he would be busy but he was already arranging for me to stay with someone from his church. When I was about 5 miles away he was on the side of the road to take my order for dinner---stromboli sounded good. We had dinner and then he had to go help some friends move some furniture. He thought nothing of leaving me alone in his house to chill after knowing me for only a half an hour...I guess there still are some trusting people in this world. I ended up staying the night with a couple named Marty and Rosemary (see the picture). They are great folks. Marty has lived in Biglerville his whole life. He recently retired from the local box factory after 26 years. He even meets up with old high school buddies once a week. Marty reminded me are Marty McFLy from Back to the future. Rosemary was very sweet and interested in what I had to share about Camden...and she makes a heck of a sack lunch.
While I was here in the library a guy came in who is also biking across the country. He started in Bakersfield, CA and is going to Akron, PA. He's 52 now and he did the same trip 30 years ago. He raising awareness for Mennonite Central Committe (their mission branch)---who I know do excellent work all over the world. Check him at mcccycletour.com He's going to give me a shout out on his site too.
It's been raining all day and I'm in the midst of the mountains. I stopped at the local post office to send some of my gear ahead to Crystal Lake in order to lighten my load a little. Keep me in your prayers

"New" dining room chair

Second-hand (msh0608-1 and msh0608)
I bought 5 side chairs and this arm chair at the Habitat ReStore for $25 each.
The dark walnut wood matches my table, buffet and hutch.

The cane backs on the chairs in my set were worn through from frequent use by teen boys and their friends. I had hoped to learn how to replace the cane but when I saw these six chairs in good condition, at such a low price, I happily abandoned that idea. :-) The plan is to restain the cane and recover the seats.

Hemingway's home in Key West ~

For our Spring break this year we travelled south, right to the tip of the Keys to Key West.
These beginning scenes are from the beginning of the trip. Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery ... and never have I seen so many fishing boats anywhere. The Keys are sort of like the Caribbean, have that island mentality, yet still very much a part of America. Great restaurants and if you love seafood as we do, you'll be in heaven!

This was Hemingway's home from 1931 to 1939.It is a private, for-profit landmark and tourist attraction now populated by six and seven-toed cats that guides claim are descendants of Hemingway's cats. The author's second son, Patrick, who lived in the house, stated in a 1994 interview in the Miami Herald's "Tropic" that his father had peacocks in Key West, but no cats; he owned cats in Cuba. In a 1972 L.A. Times interview, Hemingway's widow Mary denounced the sale of "Hemingway cats" by the owners of the house as "An outright lie. Rank exploitation of Ernest's name." The house no longer sells cats, but does continue a selective breeding program for them.

It was in this house that he did some of his best work, including the final draft to "A Farewell to Arms," and the short story classics "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber."

The house stands at an elevation of 16 feet above sea level, but is still the second-highest site on the island. It was originally built by Asa Tift, a marine architect and salvage wrecker, in 1851 in colonial southern mansion style, out of limestone quarried from the site. As testament to its construction and location, it survived many hurricanes, and the deep basement remained, and remains, dry.

The Hemingways had lived in Key West since 1930, but had rented housing. Pauline Hemingway (the writer's second wife) found the Tift house in 1931, for sale at a tax auction. Pauline's uncle Gus bought it for her and Ernest, for $8,000 cash, and presented it to them as a wedding gift.

Leather and Oak add comfort and warmth

I love the warmth and richness of oak and leather. The chair on the left is one I found in the trash after a neighbor moved it. It has large flat arms and is perfect for setting down a cup of tea or other.

The chest in the middle came from a garage sale... $25! Solid oak and it used to be a display piece in a hardware store. It's marked in gold letters... Union Twist Drill Co., Athol, Mass. U.S.A. and also Twist Drills and Milling Cutters. It is filled with small drawers for all these small findings.

The chair on the right is an original early Danish Modern by Borge Mogensen.. very low slung and incredibly comfortable even for the tallest man! A sister chair is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This one came my way when my son-in-law saw it at a garage sale for $20 and knew "it would be my thing."

I knew the chair when he brought in from the car. I had studied the history of furniture and immediately said, "Mogensen!"

While thrift shopping in the fall of 2008 I saw one of these carts in a thrift store window, it was up for auction. I decided then and there that it was one of the most beautiful pieces of furniture I had ever seen and that I would buy it, if at all possible. I didn't get that one. Final selling price at that thrift store auction was $1,250.00 (too rich for my blood). But what I did get was a nascent curiosity about Paul McCobb, and later in the year, thanks to craigslist, I ultimately was able to acquire the example pictured above at a much more palatable price-tag.

Vintage California Redwood Condiment or Horderves Serving Jars and Tray

This lovely set has never been used, it was still in it's plastic wrap when I picked it up! Its beautiful wood shines with a lovely depth of color. The glass jars each come with either a stainless steel fork or spoon that were made in Japan and can be used with or without their lids. This would be a lovely item to fill with mayo, mustard, pickles and pickled peppers to set out along a sandwich buffet! It's great mid century modern item that was probably picked up as a souvenir from a trip to California! The set is in pristine condition with only one small scratch on one of the wood lids as seen in the last photo. Not only would this be a great set for a buffet but it would also make a unique and lovely house warming gift!

After driving through the enormous Redwood Chandelier Tree, Jackie purchased the serving set at the gift shop to give to her mother in law as a thank you souvenir for house sitting. When she returned home to discover that her mother in law had re-arranged their furniture and thrown out her collection of nick nacks in the curio cabinet Jackie didn't give her the gift let alone speak to her again!

This island cabinets were finished in a dark walnut color, and was fabricated to look like furniture. The appliances are stainless steel professional appliances which reflect the newness of the kitchen without changing the intended character. A dishwashing alcove is tucked away, allowing for any mess from preparation to not be a distraction to visitors.

We were supposed to get our new office furniture delivered yesterday but nothing turned up. It's five months late, which is completely ridiculous. We didn't order anything exotic, just office furniture straight out fo the catalogue of the required supplier. So here I am sitting at my denuded desk.

Foot Stool - Ghost Furniture

Exactly what it says. This antique oak footstool was found in a large house clearance in Northumberland. Beautifully made with little turned legs.

An old plaster cast of part of a gladiator's foot in a Roman sandal has been fixed to the top of the stool - yes that makes it a Foot Stool.

Painted with Designers Guild Moss. The top of the stool has an intricate lace pattern in Designer's Guild Kingfisher. Lastly, treated with Ghost’s special smooth wax finish.

We constructed this beautiful piece, covering it in Mohair, creating a scalloped pattern with the brass nailheads, adding brass wheels to the custom turned hard wood legs.
