Edison's Current Meter

Edison's Current Meter

As the producer and the consumer of electricity are generally different people, it is necessary to have some method of measuring the electricity consumed in order to have it valued, as with gas. According to Ohm's law, the current increases in a closed circuit with the electromotive force, and it decreases as the resistance increases. Edison, by using a shunt system, secured that the resistance in the circuit will be the larger the fewer lamps are inserted in the circuit. In Edison's system, therefore, we have a resistance inversely proportional to current, and also inversely proportional to the number of lamps inserted. But the amount of the separated products of decomposition in a voltameter is proportional to the current; it follows, therefore, that the amount of these products of decomposition must be proportional to the number of lamps burning. It must, therefore, be a measure of the amount of electricity consumed by the lamps. On this principle Edison constructed several kinds of apparatus, one of which is represented in Fig. 342. Two voltameters z z1 are placed in an iron case, and each of them has two zinc plates p and p1 insulated by means of gutta-percha, and immersed in a solution of zinc sulphate. The current decomposes the solution, separating zinc at the negative electrode and sulphuric acid at the positive electrode. The sulphuric acid separated out at the latter dissolves the zinc of the plate. Hence, while the current flows the positive plate becomes continually lighter, and the negative heavier. The effect of the electric current then is a transference of the positive to the negative plate. If the voltameter were to be inserted directly into the circuit, one of the zinc plates would be very soon dissolved: to prevent this Edison inserts resistances w2 and w3 consisting of German silver shunts, so that only a branch current enters the voltameter. The resistance w2 is double the resistance w3 therefore the separated quantity of zinc in one of the voltameters is four times as large as in the other. The one is intended for the monthly measurements, the other serves as check to the former. To render the process of decomposition independent of temperature, two resistance wires w and wl are inserted; so that when the temperature rises the resistance in the wire will be increased, but that in the liquid diminished. By giving a suitable resistance to the wire, the changes of resistance in the wire and liquid may be made to balance each other.
The spring f consists of two different metals, and serves the purpose of causing the contact pins c and q to touch whenever the temperature has been lowered beyond a certain limit, and by this means to insert the lamp /into the circuit. As soon as the desired temperature in the fluids of the voltameter is again obtained, the springs bend upwards, and contact with the lamp is broken.
The apparatus just described is made in two sizes, one for twenty-five and the other for fifty lamps.

20 Sterling Enamel Compote 1964 - 1965

Sterling silver, guage 18, lid with plique a jour knob, base set with six enamel paillions, and mounted on rosewood platform. Overall measurements approx. 7 1/2" D x 7" H.
Note: This piece was designed and handmade by Vincent Ferrini to satisfy the "masterpiece" requirement for the MFA degree awarded by Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen. As was policy with RIT, all needed material was provided to the graduate student by RIT. These "masterpieces" were then kept by RIT for a period of ten years for use in displays, to augment the fine reputation of RIT graduate work. After the ten-year period, the policy was that a masterpiece could be bought back from RIT for the current value of materials used. Ferrini contacted RIT intending to buy back his "master-piece", only to be informed that the piece could not be found. Ferrini was, of course, astounded. No one there at RIT would offer any kind of explanation. This is the only known photo of the piece and the mystery was never solved. Perhaps a collector, somewhere, might know of its whereabouts.

Striped Bass

Striped Bass

Morone saxatilis
Description
The striped bass, or "striper," one of the most avidly pursued of all coastal sport fish, is native to most of the East Coast, ranging from the lower St. Lawrence River in Canada to Northern Florida, and along portions of the Gulf of Mexico. The striped bass has been prized in Massachusetts since colonial times. In 1670, Plymouth Colony established a free school with income from coastal striped bass fisheries. Thus, one of the first public schools in America was supported by this highly valued resource. The unique angling qualities of this trophy species and its adaptability to fresh water environments have led to a major North American range expansion within the last 100 years. A valuable fishery has been created on the West Coast and inland fisheries have been developed in 31 states by stocking the striped bass into lakes and reservoirs.

Several characteristics distinguished the striper from other fish found in coastal Massachusetts waters. The striped bass has a large mouth, with jaws extending backward to below the eye. It has two prominent spines on the gill covers. The first (most anterior) of its two well-developed and separated dorsal fins possesses a series of sharp, stiffened spines. The anal fin, with its three sharp spines, is about as long as the posterior dorsal fin. The striper's upper body is blueish to dark olive, and its sides and belly are silvery. Seven or eight narrow stripes extending lengthwise from the back of the head to the base of the tail form the most easily recognized characteristic of this species.

Striped bass can live up to 40 years and can reach weights greater than 100 pounds, although individuals larger than 50 pounds are rare. The all-tackle angling record fish, taken in New Jersey in 1972, weighed 78 ? pounds and measured 72 inches long. The Massachusetts record of 73 pounds has been equaled on three occasions, the most recent of which was at Nauset Beach in 1981. The following table lists average lengths and weights of striped bass at selected ages; the fish were collected in the Chesapeake Bay and Albermarle Sound (North Carolina) regions.

Females reach significantly greater sizes than do males; most stripers over 30 pounds are female. Thus, the term "bulls," originally coined to describe extremely large individuals, has been more accurately changed to "cows" in recent times.

The number of eggs produced by a female striped bass is directly related to the size of its body; a 12-pound female may produce about 850,000 eggs, and a 55-pound female about 4,200,000 eggs. Although males reach sexual maturity at two or three years of age, no females mature before the age of four, and some not until the age of six. The size of the females at sexual maturity has been used as a criterion for establishing minimum legal size limit regulations in recent years.

Habits
Striped bass are rarely found more than several miles from the shoreline. Anglers usually catch stripers in river mouths, in small, shallow bays and estuaries, and along rocky shorelines and sandy beaches. The striped bass is a schooling species, moving about in small groups during the first two years of life, and thereafter feeding and migrating in large schools. Only females exceeding 30 pounds show any tendency to be solitary.

Schools of striped bass less than three years of age (sometimes called "schoolies" by anglers) occasionally travel from upstream into rivers such as the Hudson, Connecticut and Merrimac. Although adult striped bass move into rivers to reproduce, fish less than three years old probably make such journeys to take advantage of a river's abundant food resources.

Striped bass normally do not migrate during the first two years of life. However, adult stripers generally migrate northward in the spring and summer months and return south in the fall. Individuals that hatch in the Hudson River generally do not migrate beyond Cape Cod to the North and Cape May to the south. Fish hatched in the Chesapeake Bay exhibit more extensive Migrations, some being captured as far north as the Bay of Fundy in coastal Canada.

Stripers are strictly spring to fall transients in Massachusetts. Only a few fish inhabiting coastal Massachusetts waters in the summer have been known to overwinter in the mouths of southern New England streams. Some stripers frequenting coastal Massachusetts in the summer will overwinter in the mouth of the Hudson River, while many spend winter along the New Jersey coast in the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays.

Spawning occurs from the spring to early summer, with the greatest activity occurring when the water warms to about 65 degrees F. The eggs drift in currents until they hatch 1 ? to 3 days after being fertilized. Because newly hatched larvae are nearly helpless; striped bass suffer their highest rate of natural mortality during the several weeks after hatching.

The major spawning activity for the entire East Coast

Horace Silver

Horace Silver

Serenade To A Soul Sister

Blue Note Records 1968

I met him on a bridge over the river Pegnitz, where people gather to enjoy the sun in the meadows alongside the river. I was insecure to ask him, because he went on crutches and was carrying a camping armchair. When I eventually asked, he was very compliant and pleased about the fact that I proposed a serious jazz album. After I photographed him he kept on talking for a felt hour about his life and the auto-biography he was writing at the moment. As far as I remember he was an aristocrat and he told us, that he spend some time with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in a summer house. He kept on telling a lot of other unbelievable, crazy stuff I can't remember anymore. I wasn't sure if he just invented the whole story but it didn't matter at all because it was a great story that definitely made my day. Perhaps this is the best part about asking strangers for a photograph.

(These pictures are about 5 years old. They are all framed slides, kept in a slide magazine and shown frequently with a projector. Something I deeply regret and won't do ever again. They are so incredibly filthy that it takes me about three hours per slide to do the retouching. So I gave up on these and upload them as dusty as they are. Sorry about that. I'll do the cleaning when MoMA is asking for prints.)

This pendant is just so cute! I hand crafted this tiny speckled sparrow from fine silver.

He measures 3cm (1 1/4 inches) from beak to tail and 1cm across his tummy. I have given him a speckled tummy with tiny round holes.

He is hung from a 45cm (16 inch) sterling silver ball chain, attached to it with a very plain petite sterling silver bail.

He is eager to find a new home!

Ghana Chieftain Necklace Warriors Poised for Battle

Ghana Chieftain Necklace Warriors Poised for Battle

Materials: cowry shells, bauxite, Kirdi (Fala) brass bells and beads, copal amber, which is not amber at all, but 1880s thermal plastic (Bakelite) made in Britain. The British traded thermal plastic beads in many regions Afrika. These were in the form of rods from which Afrikans fashioned beads. The region of the bead can be determined by the shape, embellishment and sometimes color (altered) of the beads. Length 16”

It is worth noting that many of the materials used for adornment on the Afrikan continent are there by way of trade. Therefore it is not uncommon to find silver jewelry in North/Northeast Afrika to have originated in Yemen, in East Afrika from India, and in the entirety of Afrika from Europe. The term trade beads encompasses beads that are indigenous as well as beads traded on the continent from other parts of the world. The most familiar grouping and largest quantity of trade beads from outside of the continent, originated in Italy. The Czechs also supplied a fair number of beads for trade. Although some of the most desired beads are cobalt blue, and referred to as Russian blues, the Russians had no bead making industry. However, these and the white hearts (red with white center) were traded in North America by the Hudson Bay Trading Company.

The trade beads were at their height of popularity in the 1960s-70s. They are to be found in museums and private collections all over the world. As time progressed they have become more rare, the finest qualities already having found their way into collections. It is increasingly more difficult to find these beads on the Afrikan continent, resulting in a greater demand. The beads in my collection and used in my jewelry were purchased primarily between the 1960s and 1980s when better beads were readily available.

****************************
I fell into the ocean
When you became my wife
I risked it all against the sea
To have a better life
Marie you're the wild blue sky
And men do foolish things
You turn kings into beggars
And beggars into kings

Pretend that you owe me nothing
And all the world is green
We can bring back the old days again
And all the world is green

The face forgives the mirror
The worm forgives the plow
The questions begs the answer
Can you forgive me somehow
Maybe when our story's over
We'll go where it's always spring
The band is playing our song again
And all the world is green

Pretend that you owe me nothing
And all the world is green
We can bring back the old days again
And all the world is green

The moon is yellow silver
Oh the things that summer brings
It's a love you'd kill for
And all the world is green

He is balancing a diamond
On a blade of grass
The dew will settle on our grave(s)
When all the world is green

20th Wedding Anniversary

20th Wedding Anniversary

Today, 8/25 is our 20th Wedding Anniversary. So we have made it this far together.

Yesterday was an ongoing amount of time with a different doctor, which I thought was going to be the beginning of choices I would receive to make a decision. But instead of choices, it again is more time for additional tests and further review by this doctor of procedures already done??

I just cannot get into much of anything lately so sorry I have not been around to visit your wonderful sights nor have I edited or uploaded 100's of shots I have already taken. Heck, I cannot even concentrate to play farkle in the evening!

Prayers are all welcome and I hope I am able to visit soon!! Thanks!!

13/365: Couldn't be a stud. Straight out of cell.

Yeah, I know, I am TOTALLY cheating, but I just cant be on much this week. i am SO busy with midterms and extracurriculars. so now im posting two days in advance. LOL.

I am a lesbian, DUH. But. I am the you'd-never-know-by-looking-at-me-and-boys-still-try-to-talk-to-me kind. :-P I have nothing against studs, I just could never be one.

17 reasons why- (One for each year)
1.the "dudliest" shirt i could find in my room was this one. from an ALL WOMANS college. 2.Those boxers are from Victorias Secret and have Pink written in silver across the ass. 3. I cant stand wearing boxers under jeans. its SO uncomfortable. 4. Furthermore I cant stand the baggy jeans that allow FOR wearing boxers underneath. also VERY uncomfortable. 5. On the boxer note, as soon as i took those pants off those boxers resumed their role as booty shorts and not man pants. 6.I have no idea how to stand like a guy and really? this is the only semi-studly pic i took. i posed for the others. 7. The manliest shoes i have are from playing indoor soccer. 8. this look is so obviously not attractive on me. 9. i like my boobs too much. even though they annoy me sometimes. 10.ditto my hips. 11. i hate wearing my hair UP let alone cutting it short. 12. i REFUSE to be seen in public without makeup on. 13. My toenails? theyre pink. 14. and i'm wearing a toe ring. which you cant see. 15. this outfit totally doesnt go with the pink and orange of my room 16. underneath all that im wearing a matching bra and underwear set. 17. most studs dont have their belly buttons pierced with pretty pink belly button rings :) ¦

Oh and stay tuned... I may have some super EXCITING and completely UNEXPECTED news.... any guesses?

Cosplay (Otaku) Goth

Cosplay (Otaku) Goth

Another alternative lifestyle met with gothic culture, this generally dwells around anime and costumage. Most any dark or gothic styled anime is fit for a cosplay goth. Their general aesthetic from the male side is a bandanna, dark eyeliner that cover most of the eye outline than many rockaholics would wear it, they also wear mouth masks which is symbolic of guarding against the plagued modern world of men (the asian symbols act as magical barriers to keep out any retarded accents such as slang, any modern philosophies such as conformism and evolutionism, overall the modern way of life), gloves, trench coats, silk black shirts, studded belts, baggy jeans and platform or Naona boots. The females generally wear a silver haired wig, a moogle bandanna, a mouth mask (for same reasons), lightly applied dark eyeliner (for anime cuteness), black shirt and corset, black costume angel wings, black skirt, black platform boots, various wristbands, black nails and a laced choker. For a cosplay goth, the disdain of modern man still applies being they still dwell on the mystical things of the world, while in that disdain they enjoy cosplay (even the comic-con conventions and other anime conventions), gothic style anime games (such as Devil May Cry) and even manga with a gothic atmosphere (such as Angel Sanctuary). They still thoroughly enjoy the same gothic music of any lifestyle from classic gothic down to pop-gothic. The nice thing about being cosplay gothic is that you don't have to have an exclusive fashion sense, since cosplay means you can do pretty much anything!
