1.7 million. What Recession?

1.7 million. What Recession?

Okay it's $1,695,000, but what's $5,000 between neighbors? Two of these houses were built side by side on a large lot down the street from us. We went to the open house a few weeks ago to take in the atmosphere.

3,000 sq ft. The agent said that's the size people want these days. No yard to speak of, but buyers don't care; they would rather be close to town than out where the land is. Just enough patio for a BBQ and patio furniture. Tastefully appointed with wood floors, earth tone walls and white trim, open kitchen with granite counters, 16 in-ceiling lights in kitchen alone, stone tile showers with glass doors, spa bathtubs, but only adequate closets. It's nice enough, but absolutely no personality or charm. Another open house around the corner, but a little smaller, had exactly the same decor and tiny yard. Pod people must live in these houses. Successful ones with no imagination. Wonder if this will sell at asking price.

Meanwhile our house (1700 sq. ft.) has dropped in value because the kitchen has not been upgraded even though the bathroom was; our house appraised at a little less than half the value of this one. These things matter when you are trying to leverage your equity. Going to the open house inspired quite a long conversation about what we liked and didn't like about houses. We were largely on the same page and much preferred the house we're in to these Stepford wife houses.

46/52 Convinced

People are sometimes convinced that something is true without any evidence. Just because something is accepted by society or talked about by other people is sometimes good enough to substantiate some thought.

For me I have been convinced that California is always warm and sunny, especially in the summer.

I've gone back in my mind over and over again, trying to think about why I think summer is so lovely and fun. The actual evidence I have is a collection of real memories of really warm days I've had in the past. Then I counted how many I could recall, only about 10 in the SF Bay Area.

Then I realize, every single summer I complain about how "this year is so weird, it's so cold." I'm stubborn enough to try to wear tshirt and shorts when I go outside even though it's cold enough for a winter jacket. I even bought a sun lounger and patio furniture because I was expecting it to be nice all the time.

Instead, here I am in a sweater in my home with the heater on in July typing under a photo I took of myself last night wearing two jackets and a beanie and still being cold.

I'm not a wuss when it comes to temperature either, it was about 48 degrees with an even colder windchill. It was actually drizzling a bit too in the city.

Am I just crazy? Why does it suck so bad here? I think I'm getting depressed by this weather.
