Hampton Court Palace - Tudor Great Hall hammerbeam roof structure

Hampton Court Palace - Tudor Great Hall hammerbeam roof structure

The Tudor chamber is 108 feet long by 40 feet wide and 60 feet high and was the last medieval great hall built for the English monarchy. Built between 1832 and 1836, it was used for banquets, receptions, masques and balls, and other functions. During Tudor times, this was the most important room of the palace; here, the King would dine in state seated at a table upon a raised dais. The hall took five years to complete, so impatient was the King for completion that the masons were compelled to work throughout the night by candlelight. Repaired a number of times, the gorgeous hammer beam roof, like that of Westminster Hall, has suffered badly from the ravages of the death-watch beetle.

With its finely carved minstrel's gallery and screens, stained-glass windows, and magnificent tapestries, the hall presents a picture of singular richness and beauty. The glass is modern, that in the west window relates to Henry VIII and his wives and children, whose badges are a feature whilst the east window illustrates the genealogy of the royals.

Hammerbeam roof, in architecture, is the name given to a Gothic open timber roof, of which the finest example is that over Westminster Hall (1395–1399). In order to give greater height in the centre, the ordinary tie beam is cut through, and the portions remaining, known as hammerbeams, are supported by curved braces from the wall. Other important examples of hammerbeam roofs exist over the halls of Hampton Court and Eltham palaces, and there are numerous examples of smaller dimensions in churches throughout England and particularly in the eastern counties. The ends of the hammerbeams are usually decorated with winged angels holding shields; the curved braces and beams are richly moulded, and the spandrils in the larger examples filled in with tracery, as in Westminster Hall. Sometimes, but rarely, the collar beam is similarly treated, or cut through and supported by additional curved braces, as in the hall of the Middle Temple, London.

Recently, as part of an extensive restoration project undertaken by Historic Scotland, the hammerbeam roof of the Great Hall at Stirling Castle was completely renewed. Green oak from 350 Perthshire trees was used to fabricate and erect 57 hammerbeam trusses spanning approximately 15 metres. Since its construction around 1502 by King James IV of Scotland, structural loads from the roof had caused the walls of the hall to deflect outwards. To ensure that the ridge of the roof would be level and straight, the trusses were each made with a slightly different pitch and span. The restoration started in 1991 and was completed in 1999. Other examples are in the Parliament Hall in Edinburgh and the Great Hall of Darnaway Castle in Moray.

Anderson has their own teak tree plantations. Only the finest wood is used for their furniture. In addition to that a 28,000 sq ft manufacturing plant provides them the ability to churn out many designs. Anderson furniture designs are made by hand using only traditional carpentry techniques. By concentrating on these fundamental basics Anderson produces high quality furniture to last a lifetime. They specialize in using mortise and tenon joints where appropriate to give enhanced strength and structural integrity. They also use a wide variety of construction techniques including dovetail joints, biscuits joints, miters joints, dado and rabbet joints and of course chamfering on most side edges. They really care about how they make their furniture, it is not simply a production process but an art form, and whilst many designs will look the same, every piece will be unique!

This nearly six foot, solid teak, rectangular dining table is perfect for any purpose and is constucted from kiln dried first grade planatation grown teakwood. It can make that perfect addition to your patio, garden, backyard or poolside. It is very strong and beautifully crafted for a lifetime of service.
