Frontier Day at Popes Tavern Dining Room
Over the mantle is a portrait of Ferdiand Sannoner, the young Italian engineer who designed the city of Florence under the direction of General John Coffee and the Cypress Land Co. in 1818.
Sannoner was allowed to name the city he had planned and chose Florence, in honor of Florence, Italy.
He became a naturalized citizen and lived in Florence until 1857 when he moved to Memphis.
The mahogany dining table has an interesting history. The story begins as a piano was being delivered to the Forks of Cypress by a horse drawn wagon.
One bad bump, and the piano fell from the wagon and was so badly damaged that only the wood was salvageable. The wood was used to make this lovely dining table.
Under the left window is a cherry sugar chest made in the early or mid-19th century. Sugar was very expensive and scarce, and sugar chest were usually kept locked.
