Pierre Dewey LaFontaine, Jr. (born July 3, 1930), is a New Orleans clarinetist. Early on he played with the bands of Monk Hazel and Al Hirt. With his long time friend, trumpeter George Girard, Fountain founded The Basin Street Six in 1950. After this band broke up four years later Fountain was hired to join the Lawrence Welk band, and became well known for the many solos he took on Welk's ABC television show, The Lawrence Welk Show. Fountain returned to New Orleans, played with The Dukes of Dixieland, then began leading bands under his own name, owning his own club in the French Quarter in the 1960s and 1970s. He later acquired "Pete Fountain's Jazz Club" at the Riverside Hilton in downtown New Orleans.

Among The Woodwinds
Here's the first of what will be a string of St. Patrick's Day parade photos. We ended up getting there a little bit late due to some junkie pulling the emergency brake on the D train( I wish I was kidding ), so we didn't see much of the parade itself, but got lots of behind the scene shots as the different groups prepared for their moment in the spotlight. Here we have a bunch of clarinets, my instrument of choice during those awkward formative years. Want to make a dorky, skinny kid that much cooler? Hand him a woodwind and ask him to attempt to create music by blowing on a dry reed. Oh how I miss band class.
Reeds.

Let Me Introduce You To My Friend Al
Al, is short for Alverez. I bought this guitar when I was 26. It was the result of a conversation I had with a friend.
One night at a bar, me and a friend were talking. He asked "What is the one thing you wish you could learn to do?"
I immediately said "Play the guitar"
He said "What's stopping you?"
That hit me like a ton of bricks - I could actually get myself a guitar and learn to play it?! Wow, I was jolted awake, what an epiphany! You mean I can do something on my own and not have to go to school and get approval from a parent or even learn to read music......!!
So I woke up the next day and drove 30 miles to Norwalk, CT to a grungy old guitar store and bought Al for $300.
I also got a Mel Bay book and some other accessories. Went back to my little dive of an apartment in Woodbury, CT and made noise for the rest of the next 3 weeks!
Since then, I have not allowed any obstacles to stand in the way of learning something new! Photography, Woodturning, Watercolor, Building Websites, and best of all Parenting are just a few of the things I have learned on my own.
So, I hope this little tale stands as a challenge to you as well - If you want to learn something, just do it!
By the way, I am a mediocre guitar player, but I love to make noise!

also, this picture is a lie, because i don't play guitar. well, i don't play well. and because i don't play well, i gave up trying to learn. i've been playing piano for eleven of my fifteen years, and i think i'm just going to stick with that.
the guitar is my dad's- when he was a teenager (back in the stone age when people rode dinosaurs to high school), he was in a band.

6.365 ~ Music and Soul
When I was younger, I used to spend several hours on my guitar after school. I used to stare at the clock waiting for 3pm to hit so I can rush home and "jam" with my friends. Nirvana. Metallica. Lenny Kravitz, Pink Floyd. Those were my all-time fave bands. I let my change in lifestyle and busy schedule put my guitar to the side. Ever since then, my skills just went downhill from there. Music has always been a natural remedy to cure any bad days. Maybe someday, I'll find the time again to jump back on the guitar.

Mexican Music
In Ensenada,Baja California, some kind of huge Dixie band was playing at the city centre.Only I didn't hear them,I just saw their instruments lying on the ground of the dusty place, glistening in the sun. When one of the musicians saw me taking pictures he was about to put the one trumpet back up,so that I had to stop him from doing so;I think the one "fallen" trumpet fits just perfectly into the composition..

The Bearded Bandsman
I'm running a little low on new pics (need to get out there and shoot!), so delving back into the archives.
This one is from the St.Patricks Day Parade, Cork, 17th March, 2009.
I'm not sure of who the band were, but this distinguished looking gentleman stands out from the crowd.
I'm sure in his 'civvies', he probably doesn't strike you as someone who plays clarinet in a marching band. You certainly can never judge a book by the cover.
Street Musician close up
One of my first shots with my new Nikon D300. I have to get used to where all the buttons are and to the new features on it. I will go out to take more pics when I get rid of this pesty cold and sore throat. The weather outside is grey, windy with 89% humidity so it's not a very good idea to go trudging round the island with a cold.

Saints of bygone era come alive singing and moving in chorus near choupatty (Mumbai Sea Face). Automatically driven life size puppets (appear so real, how can i call them puppets?) doing kirtan (rendering of discourse with devotional songs sung together with musical instruments in ecstatic zeal). FEATURES the famous Saint of India, Tukaram and the flock of devotees engrossed in singing words which are a legacy of wisdom, surprisingly useful even today for those who seek happiness.

I love photos of musical instruments, or people playing music. Artists and their materials are also really enjoyable to photograph or just watch sometimes. My new lens (Canon 55-250mm) is just brilliant at getting into the details of these without intruding on the artist or musician at work. I love it!
