I haven't flown SQ for a while. Their plastic crockery now have a rim of anti-slip black rubber at the base, which looks striking and is practical at the same time. The white crockery is also unusual in that the rims are asymmetrical. I call it a touch of elegance.

19th Century history of the RVP

Funded by Prince Albert’s Royal Patriotic Fund, the building was intended for the ‘Education and Training of three hundred Orphan Daughters of Soldiers, Seamen and Marines who perished in the Russian War, and for those who hereafter may require like succour’ . Originally named as the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum, the building was designed by Major Rhode Hawkins in a heroically ornate Gothic style. The foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria on 11th July 1857 and the first phase was completed in 1858 to an almost entirely symmetrical plan form. The result was judged to be ‘bold, picturesque and effective’ by The Building News (October 8th,1858) . The first inmates were received on 1st July 1859.

Construction work was extremely rapid, taking only 18 months to complete. This was a result of many innovative features, including the use of iron filler joist floors of standard span, cast iron windows and stone dressings, roof trusses and decorative leadwork, all pre-fabricated off-site.

The Royal Victoria Patriotic Fund had raised the then colossal sum of ?1.5 million. No expense was spared in the intricacy of the design and the quality of construction. However, the building cost was only ?35,000, the builder being Mr George Myers of Belvedere Road , Lambeth. The symmetrical plan was altered to an asymmetrical Palladian layout by the addition of the dining hall (now used as a theatre), an annexe linked to the main building by a cloister, an infirmary to the south of the building and a chapel to the north. At the same time, an orphanage for boys was also built, this time in the Classical style, and is now used by Emanuel School.

Several small ancillary buildings also sprang up. These included a swimming pool and various small single storey buildings, including a greenhouse. Some of the buildings may have been used in connection with the market garden, which was tended by the orphans.

Life for the orphans was extremely harsh. Their work included pumping water by hand from an underground rainwater system in the rear courtyard up to the lead-lined slate water tanks in the towers. They had to launder all the clothes. Their heads were shaved to discourage head lice and they were made to assemble in the courtyards every morning to be hosed down with cold water. The patented warm air heating system failed to work. Fireplaces were added to the staff rooms but no heating was provided to the dormitories. The orphanage was nearly closed down after a scandal involving physical and sexual abuse by the Rector and the death of one of the orphans. Her ghost still allegedly roams the cloisters of the north and south courtyards.

Parts list:

(6) 1/2" by 8" long black nipple pipes (natural gas line works best)
(6) 1/2" flanges
(30) wood screws, about 1" long (four per flange, six for the hinge)
(1) door hinge
(1) piece of scrap lumber as tall as your ceiling, or so

Directions:

Easy enough! Secure the flanges onto the lumber, evenly spaced, giving enough room for each weight of each size using four wood screws per flange.

Next, use a pipe wrench to attach the 8" pipe nipples into each flange. Optionally use thread compound to make turning them a bit easier.

Attach the hinge to the top of the lumber, mount it from the back using three wood screws.

Rest the lumber against a joist, a post, or some other sturdy structure, at about a 5-10 degree angle, or so.

Secure the lumber in place by attaching the other half of the hinge to the wall, post, joist using three wood screws.

Your done! Add your weights!

And so, 20 minutes and 20 dollars, and no more stubbed toes. Your weights and other equipment are safely stored away.

Here is a picture taken in our bedroom on my dresser near the window...in a new clear glass vase with blue and white rocks and water in the vase..below I have posted pictures I took using my wide angle lens, so everyone can see our newly painted walls...and the hardwood flooring on the first floor hallway and living room..we still have to put up pictures and decorate and get new curtains. We have a new leather couch and chair (all recline)...on order which will be delivered next Friday. And then we will still have to get a new coffee table and end table(s)..I included several views of most rooms as it is hard to get the whole room in one shot...so I hope you enjoy the colorful journey below!

Staged hypnosis - casaulty list

DR.JEREMY WHEELER

In the late 1980's Dr.Jeremy Wheeler trained as a hypnotherapist, and later diverted into stage hypnosis.

Most of his hypnotic shows emanated from re-bookings making him one of the busiest comedy hypnotists in the business.

Giving up a profession that was earning him a small fortune, for very little work, was hard to walk away from.

Jeremy feels it is only morally right for the public to see a different perspective based around this highly controversial subject, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, stage hypnosis, and the dangers of hypnosis, and who better to tell the story than someone with first-hand experience, an expert in his own field, even though he has now completely withdrawn from this profession.

1.) PHYSICAL CASUALTIES

Physical casualties are one of the dangers of stage hypnosis. On many occasions people will sustain minor injuries.

These can occur from falling off their chair to the more dangerous accidents like falling off the stage.

There was an episode during the early 1990s that was reported in the press about a girl who walked off the edge of the stage at Glasgow Pavilion.

She asked the hypnotist if she could go to the toilet, to which he said, "Yes of course, take the nearest exit."

His comment was given harmlessly, yet the girl walked straight off the edge of the stage and injured herself by breaking her ankle.

Approximately five years later it was Glasgow Pavilion that was sued for damages, not the hypnotist.

At a Christmas show for Plymouth University I had a girl slip over on a wet dance floor. She badly dislocated her arm.

The accident was caused by the wet dance floor, with the responsibility falling onto the owners of the venue where I was performing.

Physical accidents do happen, but fortunately the human body heals quickly - it is the psychological accidents that can be so very dangerous, and is one of the most common dangers of hypnosis.

2) DEPRESSION FROM REJECTION AND DAMAGE TO THE PSYCHE

When a hypnotist asks for volunteers quite often a large number of people, maybe 20 or 30, will put themselves forward.

Very quickly the hypnotist will reduce this number of people down to 15 or 20, take them all into trance as he continues with the start of his show.

His eventual goal is to have 10 or 12 subjects all of whom are in deep somnambulism.

Quite shortly it becomes obvious to the stage hypnotist (and to the audience) that 2,3 4,5 or 6 or more of the volunteers are not in very deep trance, and not responding to his suggestions like some of the other volunteers are, so the hypnotist sends them back into the audience.

He really only wants to work with subjects that are in true somnambulism, so he can produce these wild hallucinations and other bizarre post-hypnotic suggestions.

Now the volunteers he has sent back into the audience because their depth of trance wasn’t deep enough, even though they were in a level of trance, for some, not all of them, but may be just one of them, they could well feel, “I wasn’t good enough.”

This rejection, and the feeling that comes with it may only last a minute or so, or may be for the evening , or may be even the next few days, or may be stuck in the subconscious mind permanently.

There is no rule of thumb with hypnosis.

“The I am not good enough” could be a direct cause for severe depression, and the subject not even aware of the original trigger that created it.

It is this rejection feeling of, 'I'm not good enough', which can happen so very easily, and then be trapped in the subconscious mind.

Again it depends upon the individuals’ own personal psychological and neurological make up.

No one can tell what that is until the damage has been done, and then it can't be proven that this person's personality change was caused through the medium of hypnosis.

This is what I mean by depression from rejection and damage to the psyche.

3.) MISINTERPRETATION OF SUGGESTIONS

When giving a suggestion to someone under hypnosis it is very easy for them to misinterpret what you have said.

The story of the girl at Glasgow Pavilion is an example of this.

Occasionally this will be a member of the audience.

As previously mentioned true stage hypnosis is mass hypnosis.

Without the hypnotist realising this, how is he to know that the suggestion has been removed not only from the individual involved on stage, but also from everyone's subconscious mind in the audience, which leads us onto.

4) RE-STIMULATION OF A POST-HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION

Going back to serious accidents happening in hypnotic shows reminds me of another story.

It was during my early days as a stage hypnotist.

A young lady had been involved in a hypnotic show that a colleague of mine, by the name of Ian, had performed. Ian was the very same person I had talked to in Malta about stage hypnosis.

Four days later, having been in Ian's hypnotic show, this young lady was in a supermarket carrying out some shopping.

Here’s the EXCLUSIVE interview held with Christian in an anticipation of this podcast:

Shayne: Is there a difference between Christian Hawk the DJ and Christian Hawk the producer? Tell us more.

Christian: Yes there is! The DJ is a music lover that plays tracks according to the venue, the dancefloor, the crowd, and the time. It’s more than playing music, it’s about interacting with the dancefloor and providing some cool sound experiences. Christian Hawk, the producer, is just a crazy guy that loves making music period. Same as my label, High Definition Records, I don’t follow a single genre. Even when some people say that I should keep a genre, I just can’t, it’s something artistic. I produce because I need to express myself.

Shayne: Your label, High Definition, has been doing some good stuff recently. Where did it all start and what’s the origin of the label name?

Christian: It’s not just mine, I have an important partner who is also my best friend, his name is Raoni Kirschner. The idea for the label started when I was at the bar in front of a music production university drinking with students and talking about marketing, labels, venues… As I sat there, I was thinking of starting a label. Told the guys about it, and a good artist called Vitor Munhoz (from Oblivion techno duo) was there and said “So why don’t you do it mofo!”. I told Raoni and he loved the idea. We quickly started collecting tracks, building the label stuff, doin’ our thing. The label name was missing for a while. We were at a cool party here, talking bullshit and it was around june 2008, just when the “High Definition” technology got into Brazil and everybody was talking about it… at one point somebody played an amazing track and we said joking.. “yeah this one is quality… yeah this one is high quality… yeah high definition!” then I was like “Bro! That’s it! High Definition! High Definition Records!!!” and that’s the story.

Shayne: How do you categorise the music you play vs. the music you produce? I mean, do you tend to follow a specific genre or set of genres? Why?

Christian: The music I play on my gigs nowadays is mainly influenced by House and Techno with some Minimal touches, I’m totally up to funky stuff. The music I produce, I don’t follow a genre or a set of genres, I mean if I wake up inspired to make some weird dubstep stuff, I will. I listen a lot of Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop, Rock’n Roll and Reggae music, love those influences also.

Shayne: How long have you been doing the DJ/producer thing? What inspired you to become a DJ/producer?

Christian: Well, first came the DJ thing… I was really into electronic music parties since ‘95. In 2000 I got my first gig, then I started playing here and there. In a couple of years I was the resident of Lov.e Club (Sao Paulo), which was the pioneer club of underground electronic music here. Later came the D-Edge residency and in those places I learned a lot. As a producer I started a long time ago, was on Logic 3.3 for PC, I don’t remember the year. What inspired me to DJ was the passion that I have for the music and interacting with the crowd, for producing I get inspired by moments of my life that demand me to express myself somehow.

Shayne: When you get some alone time and sit down in the studio for the first time to start a new tune.. what goes through your head? Where do you start? Do you control the music or do you let it take on a life of its own?

Christian: Cool questions, in the beginning it was all experiences, I let it take on a life of it’s own. Today I can say I produce in two ways; first one is when I know what I want and turn it int

The Waiter: Lygon Arms Inn Broadway Worcestershire UK

The Lygon Arms, situated in the beautiful Cotswold village of Broadway, is well known throughout the world as one of the oldest and most celebrated inns in England. The history of The Lygon Arms can be traced back through hundreds of years, from before the time of King Henry VIII to the present-day Queen Elizabeth II, and through such great events as the Gunpowder Plot, the Civil War and the Restoration.

The first recorded date in the history of The Lygon Arms (then the White Hart Inn) is in 1532, when the Broadway Parish Register noted its owner as Mr Thomas White, a local wool merchant. However, there are clear indications that it is much older than this. In one of the bedrooms, for example, there is a stone fireplace, built into one of the four-feet thick walls, which appears to be of 14th century craftsmanship. Other parts of the original building remain, though careful additions and improvements have been made over the years. The fine front doorway dates from the 16th century and the four gabled frontage is thought to have been built by landlord John Trevis and his wife Ursula, who carved their names into it in 1620 - the year the Mayflower sailed for the New World.

The wool trade played an important part in the economy of the Cotswolds in the 15th and 16th centuries, which in turn created a rapidly expanding need for resting places, such as the White Hart Inn, for the merchants who frequently travelled between the prosperous wool towns of Broadway and Chipping Campden.

Oliver Cromwell, who became Lord Protector of England in 1653, stayed at The Inn on 2nd September 1651, the night before the Battle of Worcester, the final and decisive battle of the great Civil War, fought between King Charles I and his "Cavaliers" and Parliament's "Roundheads". The first-floor room where he slept, and which is named after him, has an Elizabethan fireplace, richly decorated early 17th century plasterwork on the ceiling and frieze, and splendid antique furniture.

Charles I met his Cavalier supporters after the great Battle in one of the Inn's first floor rooms, now named the Charles I Sitting Room. Here, there are still remains of the original 17th century oak panelling and the ancient staircase used by the King. (But since the King was executed in 1649, the meeting referred to could not not have taken place after the battle of Worcester).

Nobody knows the troubles I've seen

What is this despondent looking creature, you ask? This, my friends, is my pitiful little cat Ivory, aka 'El Stupido', aka 'Mr. Le Chat'. Back in December, the little dude and his pardner in crime, Ebony (code name: 'Ebonezer Scrooge') spied an enemy assailant near their territory - the local neighbourhood tabby. Being vigilant protectors of their homeland, my little intellectuals turned to each other in a bout of 'redirected aggression' and the fur/claws started flying. I am sad to report that the little albino hero of our story was the victim of a torn claw amidst the bloodshed.

Fast forward three months, and we've got a case of Severely Infected Claw. Four trips to the veterinarian later, mon petit chou has battled two rounds of antibiotics, one lampshade on his noggin, and social rejection/verbal harassment by the ever condescending Ms. Scrooge. The little soldier went under the knife today and has just returned home suffering post-traumatic stress syndrome. (Don't tell the authorities, but I think somebody drugged him!) Today we begin a new round of antibiotics, a new round of anti-inflammatory medication, a new round of lampshade-on-the-head-and-banging-into-doorways-and-furniture, and a new round of social rejection/verbal harassment by Ms. Scrooge. The dejected little man is newly bandaged, and swings the paw in question with a limp envied by amputees everywhere. That is, of course, when he can bring himself to stop writhing on the floor in his dopey, moping fashion. A very large sum of money later, the jury's still out on whether he will require a toe amputation! Here's hoping that my little convalescent will emerge triumphant from his ordeal.

New Server Racks

One of the final projects before leaving my current job. We moved our server equipment to the back area into a cleaner, climate controlled room. This also allowed us to clean up the wiring.

Since these racks are not on the house UPS we've got two rack mounted UPS set ups on top.

Also, each rack is on a separate breaker. We had to move the FTP server out of the old room because it kept overloading the circuit having everything on one line.

The Little Server That Could(n't)

One of our company's mail servers that should have been trashed years ago finally bit the dust yesterday. Unfortunately, it did so without a single usable backup. Pat and I set up camp in my garage and worked late into the night trying extract what we could.

The truly ironic thing is that we already had a new server on order from Dell. We only needed this server to last another week or two. Damn you Murphy!

3D Chipboard Project

I am not pleased at all with how this piece came out. I had envisioned it differently. However, it did come out better than I had first expected.

There are many things I would love to fix. Such as: make the legs all even and 3d, make the tail 3d, add more "roundness" to the overall horse, and fix the fact that the horse has the biggest ass ever.

This media was rather frustrating for me to work with. I must say, chipboard is not my favourite. Wouldn't mind trying something else though at some point that isn't for a class.

I am going to paint it at one point which will help with some detail and roundness and cover up my unsightly pen marks. Although, I may paint one side like fur and the other like muscles and whatnot. Hmm.

When it blooms it has lovely white, fragrant flowers. Jatoba bears fruit from December to July, the fruits being nutlike capsules of 7-12 cm (2.5-4.5 inch) in length. The mealy inside smells like a strong cheese. Despite the powerful aroma, the inside is not only edible but also very nutritious.

TREE HEALS POWERFULLY

The medical uses of Jatoba are wide and impressive. The resin has been used to treat upper respiratory infections. The medicinal tea made out of bark is even used to treat sore eyes. The tea is also used to kill intestinal parasites and cure yeast infections and Candida in the stomach. The bark tea is used externally to treat foot and nail fungus. The medicinal tea made from bark and leaves stimulates digestion and is a refreshing natural energy tonic if taken in correct doses and prepared properly. The Jacob fruit itself is used to cure mouth ulcers and the tea made from the leaves is also used to treat diabetes.

We removed tile all along walls and floor, downsized hvac vent in wall to 5inch round using a marine application butterfly vent, recessed toilet in wall to gain needed space, the 4inch cast iron vent/drain pipe chase was used to run electrical up from basement, installed a Myson brand towel warmer with auto thermostat recessed in wall to save space, radiant heated floor wire with auto thermostat and custom built in wall medicine cabinet (unseen above) to house both thermostats...maybe the most $ we invested per square foot but well worth it according to client.

Outside of the box Lightbox

Lightboxes really improve photography, but most of what I build is way too big for a lightbox (at least one that I'd want in my house, anyway). So I took the lightbox concept out of the box. I built three of these for my LEGO photography, and they've worked out great. Granted, now they're just stand lamps... but work with me here.

I bought four 6 foot lenghts of PVC pipe, a few 'T' joints, 12 replacement furniture feat, three clip lamps, a few pillow cases and a bag of rubber bands.

I cut the PVC pipes just as you see this one here, and added the furniture feat so that it wouldn't scuff the floor, add stability, and help keep the thing balanced (since the T joints are wider than the normal pipe.

I cut the pillow cases in half (length-wise so I had two identical sheets of fabric) and used the rubber bands to cover each of my clip lamps, which each came with a cage to cover the light bulbs. I was going to use those curly flourescent bulbs anyway, so there was no risk of fire. The pillow cases are there to diffuse the light, to help mask glare.

As for the light bulbs, I was able to find some 5500K flourescent light bulbs at Home Depot, but they weren't marked as such. I had to actually peer through the plastic packaging at the bulb's base to find the color of the bulb. I've not been able to find 5500K bulbs anywhere else.

Most incandescent bulbs are too 'red' looking, or too 'warm'. These bulbs are in the 3000K-4000K range typically. Most flourescent bulbs are too 'blue' or 'cold'. They range somewhere around 6500K. 5000-5500K is ideal for photography, as it is the most color neutral.

Total cost: $75, including lamps and bulbs.

Spalding SB 1107

Spalding Signal Box seen here on the 9th July 2011. Originally Spalding No1 Signal Box it was one of two large signal boxes opened in 1921 to control the station and its approaches. Spalding No. 1 is situated at the south end of the station and originally controlled the level crossing and the junctions to the Wisbech, March and Bourne. Although the box appears to be a wooden operating floor mounted on a brick base it is in actual fact an all wooden structure and the brick work was added around the base of the original structure for blast protection during the Second World War and it does not support the operating floor. The box was originally fitted with a Tyer and Co. Duplex tappet frame however this was replaced by a panel in 1984 when Spalding No 2 box was abolished and the whole of the station area controlled from Spalding No 1. The structure has recently be refurbished with new window frames at the near end and the windows along the front at the far end replaced by PVC planking. This has completely altered the appearance of the box and with brick blast wall and refurbished top half it now bears no visual likeness to the 1921 original structure.

The Ascension

For my final photo i have chose the one that i feel best represents me and my photography and thus has become the symbol for my work.

The Ascension was taken completely on the spur of the moment.My house was been renovated and with it came new carpets.After the old carpets were pulled up and chucked out underneath were beautiful white dusty floorboards.I had my breakfast one morning and afterwards was walking upstairs when i saw the open door into the room and amazing sunlight coming through.A moment of inspiration struck me,i ran to get a chair from the kitchen,composed the shot,set the timer and after maybe three attempts i had the shot.

Changing to black and white in photoshop,very slight cropping and adjustment of the light levels and i had my photo.

It has become one of my favourite shots just due to the simplicity of the photo and what it represents.

For me 'The Ascension' is all about leaving the troubles,worries,problems and constraints of the physical world behind and ascending into the next life with all knowledge and complete compassion for all species.It is not a religious photo but a spiritual one.Free from the restraint that religions place on us.

The fact that i'm in the shot is not vanity.I in fact do not like to be photographed but for this sort of artistic shot i served my purpose.Besides there was no one else home and inspiration doesn't last forever.

Terowie family

Meet Alison, Daniel and NipNip.
Alison is Kingsley's daughter.
I knocked on her door and she invited me in to her home. They are renovating and I stopped them from doing their work, which I felt bad about. Alison was not bothered by my interruption at all and she was happy to tell me her story.
She and her husband bought this old 2 storey pub in Terowie about a year before and they were now at the stage of ripping up the floorboards and painting. They are hoping to bring the building back to it's former glory, but not as a pub - it is their family home.
There is a wonderful mural in the former front bar, painted 'for beers' by a local.
They have this little dog - NipNip. He was attacked by some other local dogs and left paralysed. Kingsley made a trolley for him and he is active and mobile once more.
Alison also has a sulphur crested cockatoo (Heidi) and a galah (Russell) living inside. They are naughty and loud and full of character. They destroy her furniture but she said they'll replace the furniture before they replace the birds.
I loved meeting this family, they are warm, welcoming and generous people, so typical of those living in the Australian outback. Thanks for inviting me into your home.

An amazing blend of seasonings, and I don't think okra (what many outside the bayou associate with the word "gumbo") is one of them. I don't know what to compare it to, it's just really good. I suggest you hunt this flavor out since it's a limited edition... got mine at Cost Plus World Market.
