Tokyo Disneyland Hotel Lobby

A portion of the truly grand, 9 story lobby of the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel.

We used a heap of DVC points to stay here for the first part of our trip, but it was fantastic. The service was superb, the rooms were large and comfortable (with a trundle bed, alcove bed and two double beds), and it's a quick walk to the main gate of Tokyo Disneyland Park.

Once we found the convenience store in the lobby that had all sorts of prepackaged meals and pastries we also had a pleasant, relatively cheap breakfast spot.

The buffet (at the Sherwood Garden Restaurant), while delicious, was one of the most expensive meals we ate in Japan, and that's not the hotel's "fancy" restaurant!

Oriental small-clawed otters at Edinburgh Zoo
Oriental small-clawed otter and pups © David Meikle

In September 2009, we received Ray, a male otter that came to us from the Longleat Safari Park in Longleat, Warminster. A female otter named Elena came to us from the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton in February 2010. Elena was born in 2004. She was slowly introduced to Ray, and they are now living together happily in the same enclosure. Keepers had observed the pair mating and in July 2010 Elena gave birth to a litter of three pups; two girls and one boy.

Our Oriental small-clawed otters have deluxe accommodations. In June 2002 we opened a new otter enclosure, which includes a waterfall and numerous pools where the otters spend much of their time playing and swimming. In 2003 the enclosure was featured on the prestigious Zoolex website, which is the highest accolade in international zoo design.

Our otters are fed a diet of sprats, chicks, mice and eggs daily. We also offer occasional enrichment feeds of novelty foods such as different fish, molluscs, and so on. Our otters are most active early in the morning, so get to the park early if you would like to see our otters out and about!

Where it can be found at Edinburgh ZooThe oriental small-clawed otter enclosure is in the middle of the park, just north of the Mansion House.

Oriental small-clawed otters in the wildThe range of the Oriental small-clawed otter (Amblonyx cinereus cinereus) in the wild is quite large, stretching from India through Southeast Asia and up to the Philippines, Taiwan and southern China. Their range overlaps with those of smooth-coated otters and Eurasian otters in India.

Oriental small-clawed otters inhabit fresh water and peat swamp forests, rice fields, lakes, streams, reservoirs, canals and mangrove forests.

This species is the smallest otter species in the world, and is known for its extremely agile, hand-like front paws that feature the short claws that give the species its name. These front paws allow the otters to catch and dexterously utilise many types of prey, including crab, snails, molluscs, small fish and insects. They may even prey on other small rodents, snakes and amphibians.

Oriental small-clawed otters have brown fur with a lighter underside and a greyish-white face and neck. Like other otter species, they have a powerful, rudder-like tail that propels and steers them in the water.

Although most otter species tend to be solitary, Oriental small-clawed otters live in family groups consisting of an alpha breeding pair and older offspring that help to raise the young.

The numbers of Oriental small-clawed otters in the wild are declining due to many threats, including habitat loss and destruction due to farming, as well as water contamination due to insecticides entering streams from farm runoff. Overfishing of otters’ prey and contamination of prey due to pollution are two more significant threats to this species. Due to the declining population and the many threats this species faces, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorised the Oriental small-clawed otter as Vulnerable, meaning that the species is considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

IUCN Red List category: Vulnerable

Women Flee Firebomb Attack on Home

Women Flee Firebomb Attack on Home

Here's the story from the paper's website:

Mum tells of fire drama after petrol bomb attack

INVESTIGATION: Police officers on patrol in Arthur View Terrace, Danderhall, as firefighters enter the badly scorched building.

21 April 2009
By MARK McLAUGHLIN

A MUM today described how she had to run from her home with her daughter and a friend after a suspected petrol bomb attack.

Marilyn Robertson was in the lounge with her 20-year-old daughter Emma and her friend Bev Shepherd, 19, when the drama unfolded yesterday afternoon.

Police are investigating the suspicious blaze at Arthur View Terrace, Danderhall, which left the women shaken but otherwise unharmed.

Ms Robertson, 48, a sales assistant, said: "I heard a bang followed by what sounded like footsteps in the hall and I went out to take a look.

"I saw the hallway filling with smoke and there were flames outside the door so I shouted to the girls and we all ran outside."

Neighbours saw the women running screaming from the property and called the fire brigade just after 3.10pm.

Ms Shepherd, a barmaid, said: "It was a bit of shock. We weren't sure what was going on. When we got outside someone said a petrol bomb had hit the house."

Police and the fire service are investigating the blaze.

Ms Robertson said: "The police haven't said much and they'll have to do an investigation."

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly before the flames spread to the rest of the two-storey terrace.

The front door was destroyed and the front of property was blackened by the rising flames.

Although everyone in the ground floor property and the house above were evacuated before the fire engines arrived, fire crews still found time to rescue the family goldfish.

The previously unnamed goldfish has now been named Lucky and was moved from its tank in the hall inside a water jug.

Meanwhile, Ms Robertson said she had turned down the council's offer of temporary unfurnished accommodation while her home of 20 years is repaired and would be staying with family.

Police confirmed they were treating the fire as suspicious.

Officers from CID yesterday took the women to a neighbour's house, where they were questioned for around two hours on the circumstances of the fire.

A spokesman said: "Three people got out of the home and no-one was injured.

"The investigation is ongoing so it is too early to establish a cause. We are waiting for investigators to complete their examination."

Watch manager Duncan Wilson, of Newcraighall Fire Station, said: "It will be up to the fire investigation team to determine the cause. We were more concerned with putting out the fire.

"There were no persons reported when we were sent to the scene, with the occupants having escaped through the back door.

"The front porch area and hallway are extensively damaged, while there is smoke damage to the rest of the house."

A police spokesman said: "A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a suspicious fire in Arthur View Terrace in Danderhall.

"Police are following a positive line of inquiry in relation to a second suspect."

The arrested man is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow

Main entrance to Hotel,

and World Class restaurant...

where, for a hundred years or more,
the elite from Boston, New York, and
elsewhere, came for the best scenery,
fantastc cuisine, and luxurious accomodations...
It's all of that, and more, and has changed, very little,
sinse it's early beginnings.

Ground was broken in 1900 and construction was completed in 1902. Two hundred and fifty Italian craftsmen, skilled in masonry and woodworking, were brought to Bretton Woods and housed on the grounds. A new type of power plant served reliably for over 50 years.

Imported china, hand-colored postcards and playing cards and a 1917 travel guide -- genteel mementos of an elegant legacy. On July 28, 1902, the front doors of this Grand Hotel opened to the public with a staff of no less than 350.

The most luxurious hotel of its day, The Mount Washington catered to wealthy guests from Boston, New York and Philadelphia. As many as fifty trains a day stopped at Bretton Woods' three railroad stations. One of these stations, Fabyan's, is now one of the Resort's dining establishments.

You can see Babe Ruth's golf locker at The Mount Washington Hotel.

The Hotel has been host to countless celebrities, including Thomas Edison, Babe Ruth and three U.S. Presidents.

In 1944, The Mount Washington hosted the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference. Delegates from 44 nations convened, establishing the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, setting the gold standard at $35.00 an ounce and designating the United States dollar as the backbone of international exchange. The signing of the formal documents took place in the Gold Room, located off the Hotel Lobby and now preserved as an historic site.

In 1955, the Hotel was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Morris J. Fleisher of Philadelphia, who operated the Hotel for 15 seasons until its sale in 1969 to Mount Washington Development Company. This company developed the popular Bretton Woods Ski Area and reacquired many out-parcels, thus consolidating the original Stickney Estate.

Bretton Woods Corporation acquired the property in 1975. Under its ownership, The Mount Washington Hotel was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and 6,400 acres of beautiful woodlands were sold to the United States government for inclusion in the White Mountain National Forest.

In 1986, the United States Department of the Interior recognized the historical and architectural significance of The Mount Washington Hotel with a National Historic Landmark designation. The 1896 Bretton Arms Inn, a Victorian inn located on the Hotel grounds, was also awarded National Historic Landmark status as part of the designation given The Mount Washington Hotel.

In 1991, a new chapter in the Hotel's history began as a group of New Hampshire businessmen joined forces to purchase it and the surrounding property to ensure its place in the 21st Century. Subsequent purchases of the Resort's two golf courses, surrounding development land and New Hampshire's largest ski area, Bretton Woods, successfully reunited all original Resort properties.

Making history once again, The Mount Washington Hotel opened for its "First Winter" season ever, beginning Thanksgiving Day, 1999!

Château Fontenac

Château Fontenac

The Chateau Frontenac, currently known as Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, is a grand hotel in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada during 1980. Prior to the building of the hotel, the site was occupied by the Chateau Haldimand, residence of the British colonial governors of Lower Canada and Quebec.

The Chateau Frontenac was designed by American architect Bruce Price, as one of a series of "chateau" style hotels built for the Canadian Pacific Railway company (aka CPR) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. CPR's policy was to promote luxury tourism by appealing to wealthy travelers. The Chateau Frontenac opened in 1893, five years after the Banff Springs Hotel, which was owned by the same company and similar in style.

The Chateau Frontenac was named after Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, who was governor of the colony of New France from 1672 to 1682 and 1689 to 1698. The Chateau was built near the historic Citadelle, the construction of which Frontenac had begun at the end of the 17th century. The Quebec Conference of 1943, at which Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt discussed strategy for World War II, was held at the Citadel while much of the staff stayed nearby at the Chateau Frontenac.

Although several of Quebec City's buildings are taller, the landmark hotel is perched atop a tall cape overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, affording a spectacular view for several kilometers. The building is the most prominent feature of the Quebec City skyline as seen from across the St. Lawrence.

When Canadian Pacific Hotels was renamed Fairmont Hotels and Resorts in 2001, the hotel became Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. Fairmont sold the hotel on October 31, 2000 to Legacy Hotels REIT, for $185 million Canadian. However, Fairmont has a long-term management agreement with Legacy Hotels.

During 1953, this hotel was used as filming location for the Alfred Hitchcock's movie I Confess, featuring Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter as main actors.

A snap from our honeymoon in Italy - 10mm never looked so good!

This was where we spent our last afternoon of the honeymoon - I've never been to a beach with such a good view. I did make it in for a swim, although it was bloomin' freezing at first. Great holiday all round - I'd recommend it as a romantic destination. We stayed at the hotel Florence and had a nice balcony overlooking the north of the lake and the Alps - the service was amazing as well. Just tell big Fabio that Gregor sent you... ;o)

The Charlotte airport is actually quite a relaxing place to kill time before your flight takes off. They have a long line of rocking chairs that can either face the runways or (as in this photo), a prime people-watching spot. The large mechanical sculpture on the left is anchored by a bar, and there's a fellow traveler playing impromptu tunes on the grand piano. He must've had a couple of hours to kill too, because that's how long he played.

Charlotte is one of the nicest airports I've been to. Comfy rocking chairs, power ports, free WiFi and even a piano player. Of course I hope to never fly there again -- because you pretty much have to fly America's third-world carrier to get there.

Marion Hotel- Ocala FL

Marion Hotel- Ocala FL

nrhp # 80000955-
The Spanish Colonial Revival Style former Marion Hotel building, today known as the Sovereign Building, was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm of Peebles and Ferguson who designed a number of hotels throughout the south, including Hotel Lorraine and the Hotel Monticello in Norfolk, Virginia. The hotel's builder was Day and Zimmerman, Inc. The costs of construction were completely financed by the sale of stock certificates to local citizens by the Community Hotel Corporation. Dr. James E. Chace, a former mayor of Ocala, and Horace L. Smith, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, led the effort to have a first-class hotel erected in the city to accommodate tourists and traveling salesmen. A decision was made to construct a 100 room fireproof hotel and supporting structures. A method of financing the hotel was developed and the Hotel Committee of the Chamber of Commerce formed a Citizens Sales Organization with 140 volunteers who sold stock in the Community Hotel Corporation. Funding for construction was raised in less than six weeks, for a total amount of $500,000, with most of the shares being purchased by local residents.

The design of the seven-story concrete and steel hotel included stucco walls, with decorative Spanish elements. A central tower rises above the top floor of the main block flanked by two-story wings. At the time of completion, an automobile garage for the use by guests, the Hotel Marion Garage, was also erected adjacent to the main structure.

The hotel opened with a gala celebration in early March, 1927 with 300 people in attendance. When the hotel first opened it was managed by Griner Corporation, of which movie actor Thomas Meighan and Governor John W. Martin served on the Board of Directors.

A Daytona Ghost

A Daytona Ghost

Daytona Beach, up until one point in the twentieth century, was not called Daytona Beach. It was called Daytona.

Daytona, up until some point in the twentieth century, was just like any other small town. It had its rich folks, its poor folks, its workers, its keepers and its lazybums. The town was laid out like any other town - business district in the center, then the large, fancy houses along the prefferred thoroughfares, and then a ring of middle class houses, and a clump of small, workers houses near wherever jobs were to be had.

This lovely building is a ghost. A ghost of what Daytona was, and is not, and yet still is - in a mangled, hard to imagine sort of way. This building is a relic from the days of when Daytona was once a small town, just like any other small town in the US. It wasn't really known for anything spectacular - you had to cross the Halifax River to get to a beach - mosquitoes would eat you alive at night, and people built themselves the nicest houses they could.

Daytona is no longer a small town, but you can find bits of when it was a small town if you look hard enough. Some aren't that hard to find. This lovely house, the Blodgett house of 1896, sits right on US-1 and you can find another lovely, but uncared for Victorian up a few blocks, past what was once the center old Daytona. There are still hotels that go back to the teens and twenties - amazingly untouched by developers looking to build 'luxury condos' - probably only because they weren't on the river front. The riverfront and beachfront is a different story, as is always the case in Florida. It faces the prospect of disappearing under high rise 'luxury waterfront condominiums' gleaming in their eyes. Real estate can be a real killer sometimes.

Wood Norton Hall, Evesham, Worcestershire, 1984

Once part of the BBC's Engineering Training Department at Wood Norton, the hall has since been converted to a salubrious hotel. Anything longer than a passing glance will reveal the front roof to be no more than a facade, partly rebuilt after a fire (although I understand the hall is now restored to its former glory).

One thing that puzzled we trainee engineers: where did that underground stairway on the front lawn lead to? Underground studio? Air-raid shelter? It was demolished post-'85 and replaced with a small man-hole.

Taken with a Lubitel TLR.
