Grass Widow [Olsynium douglasii]
Iris family {Iradacaeae}
Sunday March 7, 2010 Cowiche Creek Canyon.

This is the only Genus Olsynium in North America. The other dozen hail from South America. At one time this flower was included with the Genus: Sisyrichium.

7 March 2010. Daytime high temperature = 62 degrees. The only wildflowers I found growing along the canyon bottom trail of Cowiche Canyon (elevation 1,300’) were sagebrush buttercup [Ranunculus glaberrimus]. Climbing the ridge trail to 1,600’, I was surprised to find blankets of Grass Widow [Olsynium douglasii] and hiking among lichen covered basalt boulders and shaded by sagebrush some Sagebrush Violets [Viola trinervata]. So spring has arrived officially in my books. Sun, blue sky, temperatures over 60 degrees and the appearance of wildflowers. The 2010 hiking season has begun in Eastern Washington.

Mondo Grass Lawn

Mondo Grass Lawn

This lawn was planted entirely in Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus). The border was left uncut, and the center had been mowed, or the center was planted with dwarf Mondo, I am not entirely sure. I saw this on a garden tour this past spring in Portsmouth, Virginia (zone 7b or 8a), and it was apparent that it has been there a long time. It was mostly growing in the shade of a very large Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), but some parts of the lawn were in sun. Mondo Grass does very well here and is virtually no maintenance. Most often the dwarf Mondo is used in shady areas were traditional grass won't grow. It is a slow spreader, but will eventually form a dense carpet that never needs mowing and only occasionally needs irrigation.

Irish Moss 50 Seeds - Sagina - Perennial

A flowering plant, and not a moss at all, but spreads slowly to form a dense, evergreen, moss-like carpet with dense, tiny feathery leaves. Studded with a galaxy of white flowers for a short time in mid-summer. Tolerant of sandy or rocky soil, sun or part shade, but needs a steady moisture supply. Can make a fine ground cover or lawn substitute where conditions are suitable. Perfect for planting between stepping stones, in small crevices between rocks or pool-side. For sun to part-shade in moist, well-drained soil. This plant will not survive if planted in a hot, dry location. Please keep this in mind if you are planting it between rocks. 1-2" tall. Zones 4-8.
