SRS P Reactor Sealing

SRS P Reactor Sealing

Marc Sharpe, who was a senior reactor operator at P Reactor in the mid-1980s, (left) and Dr. David Moody, U.S. Department of Energy-Savannah River Operation Office Manager, were the last people to leave P Reactor, just before the opening is welded shut.

With investments from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. Department of Energy and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC, (SRNS) sealed the access to the historic P and R Reactors as part of footprint reduction and legacy cleanup at the Savannah River Site.

At P Reactor today, Dr. David Moody, DOE’s Savannah River Operations Office Manager and Marc Sharpe, a reactor operator at P Reactor in the 1980s, were the last people to exit the P Reactor before its final opening was welded shut.

“The Recovery Act enabled us to accomplish a remarkable feat,” Dr. Moody said. “In just two years we successfully and safely delivered a fitting end to these relics that led our nation to a Cold War victory. For that we are proud.”

“P and R Reactors have been instrumental to SRS’s history for nearly 60 years. The Recovery Act provided the means to showcase proven and emerging technologies and to use the talents of our dedicated workforce,” said Garry Flowers, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions president and chief executive officer. “Sealing access to P and R Reactors is perhaps the most visible milestone reached as work continues to complete closure of the P and R Area Operable Units, rendering the availability of both areas for future new missions.”

Inside the P Reactor’s opening, Dr. Moody and Mr. Sharpe placed a time capsule, about the size of a 5-gallon paint bucket, containing items that depict both the history of SRS, as well as items that show current events in the region and the nation.

In addition to the Record of Decision (ROD) issued by DOE, the Environmental Protection Agency (Region IV), and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control which initiated the reactor decommissioning project, other materials included a copy of People Magazine on the Royal Wedding and other news items.

During his 30-year career at SRS, Marc Sharpe, was a reactor operator at P Reactor. He sat in the “pot,” a term reactor operators used to describe the control room. In the late 80s, Mr. Sharpe helped with its shut down. And this morning, he walked away from the reactor he helped deactivate and decommission.

Recovery Act funds were used to deactivate and perform in situ, or in place, decommissioning of these two reactors. The underground areas and vessels of both reactors were grouted in place to 0-foot elevation with an estimated 260,000 cubic yards of concrete grout. The two structures are expected to stay in their present state for 1,400 years.

Notable projects that contributed to the closure of the P & R areas include: deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) of P and R Reactors; soil and groundwater remediation, building and operation of the Batch Plant Facility to produce the special concrete used in reactor grouting; and the remediation of P and R Area Ash basins, which received coal-fired power plant ash and waste during the operation of the reactors.

P Reactor boasted a record of never having a lost-time injury from the time it reached criticality in 1954 until it was shut down in 1988. R Reactor was the first fully functioning reactor at the Site. It became operational in 1953 and was shut down in 1964 when it was no longer needed for the nation’s defense.

House Lust

House Lust

A testimonial to the heights to which our consumer culture can go when shelter becomes an investment vehicle. Bad for the planet, bad for communities, bad for the poor, and yet another way to fleece the middle class of wealth via investment bubble. Not that we didn't know all that, nor does the author come to this conclusion but the details give some insight into American thinking behind the built environment just when we should be preparing for a much more diminished resource consumption lifestyle.

Insights offered:

Homeownership replaced the status once attributed to careers, because now people have niche jobs so obscure that careers are too hard to read as a social marker so people talk about their houses and show off their houses waiting for the wow response to their immense foyers or home theatre, wet bar and jacuzzi.

The extent to which homes have been supersized outside of the Bay Area makes 3,000 sq ft look small when 9,000 sq feet is the top end. They've just increased the sizes of rooms. Interior designers have had trouble giving these interiors a human scale. Homeowners can't remember how many bathrooms they have.

Americans want new stuff, thus new homes that are custom ordered from packages developed by corporate homebuilders ie: Toll Brothers. Much time is spent by homeowners choosing all the details. Increasing amenities are simply rolled into the mortgage thus creating a "savings" for the buyer compared to after market installation. Of course the size of these homes means enormous repair bills if you have to have a roof replaced or some painting done.

Investment property bought site unseen was supposed to be the new 401K but the reality of it is shabby homes for poor people, continued urban blight in communities and no guarantees that investor will reap a return due to mitigating circumstances like hurricanes and managers who run off with the rent.

Author offers a run down of all the home shows on TV, their origin and why they appeal. He also exposes the investment gurus that teach weekend workshops for a tidy sum, some of whom push illegal practices.

Author did not discuss how zoning plays a role in enabling these ridiculous homes. Author is himself a self-identified victim of House Lust and his book does not offer a serious conclusion, only that house lust, like fitness fads shift the culture in favor of the trend even as it dies out. So we're stuck with it. This is what we're up against in attempting to change the culture towards sustainability.

Like other material obsessions that turn into addictions, more is never enough. Author does not speculate why except that's it an American thing. I would say that in a culture of the individual, "more" fails to fill the need for authenticity ie: shelter that actually fits the lifestyle of the home dweller. American home building is about buying a product based on marketing. People project, onto their purchase of a home, who they think they are and what they think they want their lives to be, thus the chef kitchens that are never cooked in. The resulting built environment is disfunctional, driving up isolation among people by being so spread out. There is nothing in such House Lust that brings families or communities together.

Found: I like stylized-realism andI had hoped to emulate the fine architectural renderings in pen-ink-wash-and-watercolor that I used to admire in the public library books in the Architecture section. I became interested and discovered these materials when I took a class in drafting. It was not mechanical drawing that interested me but rather the rendering process in the final work after the original design was conceived in plan views.

I believe that if you have the dough you have a right to pay heavily for such things, but it sure looks like an opulent, expensive way to live where more is investment and less suffices and saves. Still, one does a double take at some homes owned by some Americans. In California this home would cost about 3 to 6 times as much as it does here in Utah. Personally, I would like the house behind a wall but much closer to the street so that the whole lot in the back could be used for gardening.

I took a job my first years of college at the 4-star Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara (Montecito) where I earned summer cash as a bellman, doorman, and chauffeur for tips. When I worked as a doorman, I had valet service with it. The rich folks would park their cars with the keys still in it, you gave them a claim check, parked it down the block, and ran back to earn the next tip. Well, I noticed that these fancy dinner guests at the hotel looked pretty fancy in furs, heels, tuxedos, and gowns, but the truth about them was often waiting for me in their cars. Some were slobs, quite trashy with cigarette ashes all over the dashboard and console, but the most disgusting thing was the smell of heavy recycled air conditioning with nicotine and tar laden smoke. The smell made me positively want to wretch. I would drive the car holding my breath and park as quickly as I could without inhaling! Ha!I I developed a kind of healthy disrespect for the wealthy and enjoyed the fact that my respect was the one thing they could never pay for. I was a Tennis bum at the Courts across from the Country Club. I played about 6 hours every day and was an amateur A-player half way up the tennis pyramid in Santa Barbara-Montecito. These rich guys were always coming by from the Biltmore looking for a rally. With my visor and sunglasses on and all stripped down, they never recognized me. I always obliged them, when they saw I could handle the rally, they would ask for a game and then a set and then a match. I most always beat the pants off these guys with relish -- and onions! Just a memory, but a good one. I humped their bags at night, but I enjoyed making their tongues hangout with my cross-court returns!

I'm sure the people in this house are real nice folks, on the other hand.

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)

Tambo Yanayacu, Iquitos, Peru.

My thanks to Forrest Gump 24 for the ID.

From Wikipedia -
Eichhornia crassipes, commonly known as Common Water Hyacinth, is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often considered a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range. It is in the family Pontaderiaceae.

Its habitat ranges from tropical desert to subtropical or warm temperate desert to rainforest zones. It tolerates annual precipitations of 8.2 dm to 27.0 dm (mean of 8 cases = 15.8 dm), annual temperatures from 21.1°C to 27.2°C (mean of 5 cases = 24.9°C), and its pH tolerance is estimated at 5.0 to 7.5. It does not tolerate water temperatures >34°C. Leaves are killed by frost and salt water, the latter trait being used to kill some of it by floating rafts of the cut weed to the sea. Water hyacinths do not grow when the average salinity is greater than 15% that of sea water. In brackish water, its leaves show epinasty and chlorosis, and eventually die.

Because of E. crassipes invasiveness, several biological control agents have been released to control it, including two weevils, Neochetina bruchi Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Neochetina eichhorniae Warner (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and the moth Niphograpta albiguttalis (Warren) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Neochetina eichhorniae causes "a substantial reduction in water hyacinth production" (in Louisiana); it reduces plant height, weight, root length, and makes the plant produce fewer daughter plants. N. eichhorniae was introduced from Argentina to Florida in 1972.

Azotobacter chroococcum, an N-fixing bacteria, is probably concentrated around the bases of the petioles. But the bacteria do not fix nitrogen unless the plant is suffering extreme N-deficiency.
Fresh plants contain prickly crystals. This plant is reported to contain HCN, alkaloid, and triterpenoid, and may induce itching. Plants sprayed with 2,4-D may accumulate lethal doses of nitrates, as well as various other nocive elements in polluted environments.

The plant was introduced by Belgian colonists to Rwanda to beautify their holdings and then advanced by natural means to Lake Victoria where it was first sighted in 1988. There, without any natural enemies, it has become an ecological plague, suffocating the lake, diminishing the fish reservoir, and hurting the local economies. It impedes access to Kisumu and other harbors.

The Water Hyacinth has also appeared to the north in Ethiopia, where it was first reported in 1965 at the Koka Reservoir and in the Awash River, where the Ethiopian Electric Light and Power Authority has managed to bring it under moderate control at the considerable cost of human labor. Other infestations in Ethiopia include many bodies of water in the Gambela Region, the Blue Nile from just below Lake Tana into Sudan, and Lake Ellen near Alem Tena.

Bioenergy
Because of its extremely high rate of development, Eichhornia crassipes is an excellent source of biomass. One hectare of standing crop can thus produce more than 70,000 m3 of biogas.

According to Curtis and Duke, one kg of dry matter can yield 370 liters of biogas, giving a heating value of 22,000 KJ/m3 (580 Btu/ft3) compared to pure methane (895 Btu/ft3)

Wolverton and McDonald report only 0.2 m3 methane per kg, indicating requirements of 350 MT biomass/ha to attain the 70,000 m3 yield projected by the National Academy of Sciences (Washington). Ueki and Kobayashi mention more than 200 MT/ha/yr. Reddy and Tucker found an experimental maximum of more than a half ton per day. Bengali farmers collect and pile up these plants to dry at the onset of the cold season; they then use the dry water hyacinths as fuel. They then use the ashes as fertilizer. In India, a ton of dried water hyacinth yield circa 50 liters ethanol and 200 kg residual fiber (7,700 Btu). Bacterial fermentation of one ton yields 26,500 cu ft gas (600 Btu) with 51.6% methane, 25.4% hydrogen, 22.1% CO2, and 1.2% oxygen. Gasification of one ton dry matter by air and steam at high temperatures (800°) gives circa 40,000 ft3 (circa 1,100 m3) natural gas (143 Btu/cu ft) containing 16.6% H3, 4.8% methane, 21.7% CO, 4.1% CO2, and 52.8% N. The high moisture content of water hyacinth, adding so much to handling costs, tends to limit commercial ventures. A continuous, hydraulic production system could be designed, which would provide a better utilization of capital investments than in conventional agriculture, which is essentially a batch operation.

The labour involved in harvesting water hyacinth can be greatly reduced by locating collection sites and processors on impoundments that take advantage of prevailing winds. Wastewater treatment systems could also favourably be added to this operation. The harvested biomass would then be converted to ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen and/or gaseous nitrogen, and fertilizer. The resulting byproducts of water and fertilizer can both be used to irrigate nearby cropland.

This cover has a lot of memories for me - if you don't recognise it , then you were not in Ireland in June 1990. I remember that on the day of teh quarter-final against Romania we had arranged a meeting with a Abacus Venture Capital who were considering an investment in the Tribune at the time. We were considring a rights issues to fund the soon to be launched Dublin Tribune. We arranged a presentation to Abacus at 2pm on the day of the quarter final - we didn't realise at the time that it woudl clash with the match - but as the funding was important we waited for them to cancel - they didn't. The presentation went well and we were finshed about 5 minutes after kick-off,. The presentationw as in teh old Goodbody's Stockbrockers offices in Dame Street and we rushed to teh nearest TV set - Blooms Hotel. We watched the first half and decide to make a run for Baggot Street at half time. I will always remember walking up through Dublin at thalf-time - there was hardly a car or a bus on teh road - the place was deserted in the middle of the afternoon, it was more like 9am Sunday than 3.45 pm Monday. We met teh rest of teh Tribune folks in Toners where we watched the rest of the match. It went to a penalty shoot-out and Packie Bonner famously saved the 4th penalty with Niall Quinn slotting the fifth we were through to the semi-final -it was the stuff of fairy tales.

Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort, KG, PC (1629 – 21 January 1699/1700) was an English peer. He was styled Lord Herbert from 1646 until 3 April 1667, when he succeeded his father as 3rd Marquess of Worcester.

The new English dukedom was bestowed upon him by King Charles II on 2 December 1682, in recognition of his "having been eminently serviceable for the king since his most happy restoration, in consideration thereof and of his most noble descent from King Edward III by John de Beaufort, eldest son of John of Gaunt by Katherine Swynford"[1].

Beaufort was invested as a Knight of the Garter in 1672; on 22 April 1679 he became a Privy Councillor; and he held the office of Lord President of Wales.

Beaufort later refused to swear allegiance to King William III.

On 17 August 1657, he married Mary Capell, who was the daughter of Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham, sister of Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex, and widow of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp. They had three sons and four daughters. The sons were:

* Henry Somerset, Lord Herbert, who died as an infant;
* Charles Somerset, Marquess of Worcester (December 1660 – 13 July 1698), who had a military and political career;
* Lord Arthur Somerset.

Three of the daughters were:

* Lady Mary Somerset, Lady of the Bedchamber, who was married to James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde as his second wife, and became the mother of one son and two daughters;
* Lady Henrietta Somerset, who was married twice, to Henry Horatio O'Brien, Lord O'Brien, with whom she had one son, the 8th Earl of Thomond, and three daughters, and to Henry Howard, 6th Earl of Suffolk as his second wife;
* Lady Anne Somerset, who married Thomas Coventry, 2nd Earl of Coventry, and became the mother of one son.

The fourth daughter — bearing an unknown name — might have died young.

Beaufort's son Charles died before he could inherit the dukedom, so on the duke's death it passed to Charles's son Henry.

The $1000 bill featured a portrait of Grover Cleveland from 1928 to 1946. Today, the U.S. Treasury Department no longer prints large denominations.

The Flat Tax (HOOVER CLASSICS)

The Flat Tax (HOOVER CLASSICS)

This new and updated edition of The Flat Tax sets forth the flat-tax plan developed by Robert Hall and Alvin Rabushka, senior fellows at the Hoover Institution, who believe it is the most fair, efficient, simple, and workable plan on the table. The plan has withstood the scrutiny of leading experts on taxation and has been enthusiastically endorsed by many of them.

Here's the book that started the flat tax debate back in 1985, updated in an edition for the 1990s. Robert Hall and Alvin Rabushka present their plan as fair, efficient, simple, and workable. All income in the United States would be taxed once at the rate of 19 percent, and there would be generous allowances for families. This system and its postcard-sized tax form would wipe out $100 billion in annual compliance costs and demolish the Washington culture of lobbyists, whose entire industry depends upon tampering with the rules of free enterprise.

It's About Time

It's About Time

Early-phase construction of a 90-unit supportive housing project located in the Thornton Park district of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The project is a partnership between the Province of British Columbia (construction/operational funding), the City of Vancouver (real estate for the Province to build on) and the Portland Hotel Society's Community Services Society (a non profit that will staff and manage it on completion).

A brief timeline will explain the title:

1998: Vancouver/Whistler are selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee to seek application to host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

2001: Activists with the Impact (of the 2010 Olympic Games) on Community Coalition stress the need to include protections against the likelihood that evictions and increased homelessness will ensue if Vancouver's Host City bid proves successful. Previous mega-events in Vancouver (Expo 86) and beyond indicate the need for such protections. As a result, the ultimately successful bid book would include the Inner City Inclusive Commitment Statement, signed by the 2010 Bid Corporation and the federal, provincial and municipal governments of the day.

February 2003: Vancouver residents and those who own property in Vancouver vote 64% in favour of Vancouver/Whistler entering a 2010 Olympic Host City bid.

July 2003: The International Olympic Committee awards the 2010 Olympic Winter Games to Vancouver.

October 2006: Members of the Downtown Eastside-base Anti-Poverty Committee set up squats in several vacant buildings and hotels to draw attention to increased homelessness and its relation to the approaching Games. More than 25 activists are arrested.

November 2006: Riot police arrest 7 APC members who had occupied a vacant building near City Hall.

2003-2007: Federal and provincial governments enjoy multi-billion dollar surplus budgets yet fail to fund construction of new social housing in Vancouver. Billions are made available for construction of Olympic Games related venue construction/renovation and security.

January 2007: A study reveals it is far less expensive to provide social housing for the homeless than it is to manage them with a vast array of emergency, health and social services.

June 2007: The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Province of British Columbia claim the Inner City Inclusive Commitment Statement is not a legally-binding document and use this fact to justify their failure to live up to promises made in the bid book. The City of Vancouver, under Mayor Sam Sullivan's Non-Partisan Association dominated Council, cancels the 250 social housing units originally planned for the athletes' village.

November 2007: The City of Vancouver announces it will turn 12 properties over to the Province for new social housing construction. Two more would later be added.

2007-09: The Province purchases 23 poorly-maintained single room occupancy hotels in Vancouver with plans to renovate and then team up with nonprofit agencies that will staff and operate the buildings on completion. Many of the hotels will be designed to meet the specific needs of sub-populations within the general homeless population, a positive step but one which fails to create new supportive housing. Meanwhile, Olympic watchdog NGOs file human rights complaints with the United Nations and protest rallies like the first and second annual Poverty Olympics make international news stories.

October 2008: The credit crunch foreshadows a global economic meltdown that would throw the world into a massive recession. American financial services firm Fortress Investment Group stops funding athletes' village developer Millenium Group and the City is left on the hook for the $1.1 billion project.

December 2008: A regional homeless count finds the homeless population has nearly quadrupled since Vancouver won the Host City bid competition in 2003. Local activists estimate close to 1,000 evictions have occurred during the same period and expect another 1,000 by the end of the Games.

2008/09: Social justice activists in the Downtown Eastside and beyond intensify protest rallies and demonstrations, directing their ire at the federal and provincial governments and the fast approaching 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as a powerful gentrifying force, while local NGOs publish research reports designed to pressure the Province to start building on the land provided by the City. Embarrasssment before the international media is almost certainly a concern for the International Olympic Committee, the local organizing committee and all three levels of government.

Summer 2009: The Province, which continues to renovate the hotels it purchased in 2007, finally breaks ground on two of the 14 sites turned over by the City for social housing development. At the same time, it announces annual multibillion dollar deficit spending for the duration of the BC Liberals' third consecutive term in office. With th

And what we do is we sit down with you and we find out what your goals and purposes are, where you are trying to go; what you are trying to achieve; what is the message that you are trying to get out? Are you trying increase your revenues; are you trying to get more known in the community; are you trying to brand yourself or are you trying to make people happy? You know people have different goals and purposes. And once we do that, we evaluate every communication that gets sent out by your corporation, via the staff and their e-mails, via whatever PR machine you have going on now, via your marketing and we ensure first of all, that what you are doing is going to get you the results that you want, right, and if it is not or if you need other avenues, then we create a strategy for you that dovetails everything together so that it is like a seamless production.

Monitor the results to make sure that you are getting a return on investment for the money that you spend.

Public relations and marketing for a company. There are some avenues that maybe have principles that are always going to be the same, but every company is different and you do have to take those particular avenues and tailor it to that business to get what they want.

Public Relations

Public Relations

Karla Jo Helms - Public Relations

Well, public relations is really a way to take an idea that you have, or a vision that you have, and make people start thinking the way that you want them to think about it, or change their minds if they are not already thinking that way, so that when you deliver your marketing materials, people already have an idea that you have planted in their minds and that they are more receptive to respond to your marketing. So, the whole purpose of business PR is to make sure that you get a better return on investment for your marketing dollars.

Jamie Sene

PR and marketing go hand-in-hand. As a general rule typically PR proceeds marketing, but you can do it after marketing or before marketing. If you have already been marketing a lot and you haven’t been doing PR, your message has been out there a lot, but yet there are a lot of people you haven’t gotten as clients, so what you do is, you use a PR campaign to lend credibility to what you are doing. They may have seen your ads many, many times before, and never called you. All right. So, now they see you in a format that isn’t selling necessarily, but is touting how good you are, what you’ve done, your good works and now you have credibility and now maybe they will contact you. If you lay the groundwork before marketing and do PR, when you place your ads, you are credible suddenly. It separates the professional marketer; PR actually separates the professional marketer from the amateur. I know one banker in particularly, he had a certain clientele and he wanted to drive a new clientele into his market and he had been doing traditional ads and so forth. Through a very smart PR campaign, he got an interview on Fox News. All right, that interview suddenly lent so much credibility to this person, he actually started getting new clients, big time clients with money, contacting him because they saw him on Fox News. That is not advertising you can pay for, that is PR

Prayer Flags

Prayer Flags

These prayer flags are from Mahakala, the cave I visited during my LEAPYear travels where Siddhartha, aka Buddha, meditated for 5 years in solitude before achieving Enlightenment (NB: capital E). Five years of solitude and meditation, living in a cave that I couldn't stretch out in, let alone stand up.

To summarize, dude was intense.

The whole idea of prayer flags is in fact a lesson in impermanence, a notion that doesn't sit real well with Westerners (generally speaking, that is). We get very caught up in the humdrum of materialism that is our everyday life. A man's worth is measured by his possessions and power. Who the hell came up with that idea, anyway? But a prayer flag is in fact worthless to possess; their value is the goodwill they 'release' as they tatter. That's why monasteries and mountain paths are covered in tattered remnants of prayer flags: they're like an offering, or, well, a prayer, for harmony and peace in the world. Energy is invested in them via the ritualistic creation process (we got to see that, too) and is released as the cloth gets destroyed. So to simply stock them up is kind of worthless.

An interesting notion, especially as this all came out of my incredible amount of satisfaction with my own new toy, my Canon 50D. Irony ftw?

By the way, if you haven't heard or taken the time, please take the next 10 seconds to spare a thought or a prayer for those suffering in Mumbai today.
