This is an original 1923 black and white print of H. A. Meyer who sold "Bostonian" shoes and enjoyed playing pinochle.
Period Paper has obtained an unusual collection of prints with character sketches of Chicago movers and shakers from the 1920's. These men (yes, they are all male) were active in the business, industrial, and professional life of the city, and they are depicted here in a cartoon-style format with an illustrative and humorous verse by J. P. McEvoy. We have not seen a collection like this before. These are original 1923 prints, not current reproductions, copies, or digital prints.

3 Days Later

Day 242 of 365: "3 Days Later"

I spent today helping clean out the basement of this home in Manville. Sadly, it was a finished basement...waterlogged rugs, furniture...and we even ripped out the walls because the paneling was destroyed. It was heartbreaking, knowing I was carrying bags of toys that belonged to a child in my daughter's daycare class.

But...I saw it everywhere. I wasn't the only one that went into town to help. My buddy Charles was out in the area getting cleaning kits and more from the Red Cross into the hands of the people who needed it.

It was a tough day...but I saw the best of humanity today.

But not PSE&G. Screw them for shutting off the power to this house that was functioning perfectly, which meant the sump pumps no longer have power and the basement we had just finally gotten dry...was flooding again. I learned that tonight almost another foot had come into the basement from below.

The sump pumps could have handled it...if only PSE&G hadn't cut the power.

But other than that...the rest of what I saw today, was friends, neighbors and family, working together.

Borne Back Ceaselessly Into The Past

That last time I went to the old house, it wasn’t what it once was. Where as once the woods that ringed the property echoed with the laughter of children and the porch held the chatter of adults enjoying their summer cocktails, now all was silent. The porch furniture was ratty and brittle and the paint was peeling off the sides.

It’s always hard to place a finger on when a house so once majestic began its slow slip, then quick tumble, into disrepair. Maybe it was that first time the stock market fell and with it, so many dreams. Or maybe it was that first time the screen door slammed shut in anger and frustration and those first thoughts crossed the mind - I’ve got to get out...

Now, with the sounds of those summer parties so long ago died out, along with many of those that had attended them, the house still stood, alone and neglected.

Maybe someone will buy up the property, fix it up, return it to it former grandeur. Or maybe the natural elements will continue their assault on the structure, determined to reduce it to a pile of dust.

Boston - Omni Parker House

Locted in downtown Boston on the Freedom Trail, the Omni Parker House is America’s longest continuously operating luxury hotel. Opened in 1855, the hotel currently has 551 rooms and suites that underwent an $80 million renovation completed in 2000.

The Parker House is best known for having invented American foods such as Boston cream pie and the Parker House roll, and for having coined the term "scrod".

Many well-known people have worked at the Parker House, including Ho Chi Minh who was a baker in the bakeshop from from 1911 to 1913, Malcolm X who was a busboy in the early 1940's, and Emeril Lagasse.

John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for Congress in the hotel's Press Room. He also proposed to Jackie Kennedy and held his bachelor party here.

The hotel was home to the Saturday Club, also referred to as the Saturday Night Club, which consisted of literary dignitaries such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau, Charles Dickens and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The third floor is said to be a hotspot of paranormal activity. Charlotte Cushman, a renowned 19th century stage actress, died in 1876 in her room on there. One of the elevators is said to often travel on its own to the third floor, even when no buttons are pushed. Is it Charlotte? Or is it Longfellow, whose favorite room, which part of the Saturday Club, was on the third floor? That isn't the only ghostly encounter on the floor, though. A businessman died in room 303. Subsequent guests and staff reported the smell of whiskey and raucous laughter. After a large number of complaints, the room was converted into a closet. Extending beyond the haunted floor, some guests have reported seeing Harvey Parker, the hotel's founder, in their rooms asking about their stay. Mr. Parker died in 1884.

New Orleans - Garden District: Gilmour-Parker House

The Thomas Gilmour House, alternatively referred to as the Gilmour-Parker House or the Gilmore-Christovich House, located at 2520 Prytania Street, was built for Thomas Corse Gilmour and his wife, Anna, in 1853. Designed and built by Isaac Thayer, it was the first assymetrical, and one of the earliest examples of, Italianate architecture in the city.

When Gilmour, a cotton merchant, died suddenly in his native England in 1865, his father-in-law, Godfrey Barnsley, was unable to find a buyer for the house in a stagnant postwawr economy. Anna, then living in England, eventually rented the house to John Milliken Parker Sr., a cottoner borker, and his wife, Roberto Buckner Parker, who eventually bought the house in 1882 for $18,000. The Parkers' son, John Milliken Parker, Jr., who served as Governor of Louisiana from 1920-1924, lived here, where he entertained his hunting companion, Theodore Roosevelt. The Parkers enlarged the house between 1897 and 1899 with a dining room extension with bay windows.

In 1985, Mr. and Mrs. William K. Christovich acquired the house and engaged Samuel Wilson Jr., the eminent restoration architect in New Orleans, to restore it to its mid-nineteenth century grace.

Renaissance Childrens' Furniture

The brothers were SO dedicated to having everything renaissance in their house that they even had renaissance baby furniture - you can see two chairs, a walker that dates to the sixteenth century and that was actually used by the Bagatti Valsecchi children, and a "commode" (or as we would say, "potty") that looks like the kind of throne the Christ child is sometimes depicted enthroned on. Again I kept thinking of the poor wife - let's just hope she shared the brothers' passion for Living the Dream. One of the most interesting things about the audioguide for this museum was that parts of it were narrated by a current representative of the Bagatti Valsecchi family, who was a grandson of the one brother. He shared various recollections of life in the house, and was saying that this was the room in which the whole family gathered around to watch the moon landing.

The chair comes with a number of different undercarriges - both as a regular four-legged chair, an office-chair with five wheels and as a barstool. It comes with armrests, a writing-table attached, and different forms of upholstring. To some extent, these additions mar the simple aesthetics of the chair, while contributing with some practical elements.

Arne Jacobsen is the Danish architect who mastered the most personal and successful interpretation of the international functionalism. His architecture includes a considerable number of epoch-making buildings in Denmark, Germany and Great Britain. Arne Jacobsen initially trained as a mason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, Copenhagen, graduating in 1927.

From 1927 until 1930, he worked in the architectural office of Paul Holsoe. In 1930, he established his own design office, which he headed until his death in 1971, and worked independently as an architect, interior, furniture, textile and ceramics designer. He was professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts, Copenhagen, from 1956 onwards. His best known projects are St. Catherine's College, Oxford, and the SAS Hotel, Copenhagen.

Arne Jacobsen's designs came into existence as brief sketches and were then modeled in plaster or cardboard in full size. He kept on working until his revolutionary ideas for new furniture had been realized at the utmost perfection. The "Ant" from 1952 became the starting point of his world fame as a furniture designer and became the first of a number of lightweight chairs with seat and back in one piece of moulded wood.

Arne Jacobsen is the Danish architect who mastered the most personal and successful interpretation of the international functionalism. His architecture includes a considerable number of epoch-making buildings in Denmark, Germany and Great Britain. Arne Jacobsen initially trained as a mason before studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts, Copenhagen, graduating in 1927.

From 1927 until 1930, he worked in the architectural office of Paul Holsoe. In 1930, he established his own design office, which he headed until his death in 1971, and worked independently as an architect, interior, furniture, textile and ceramics designer. He was professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts, Copenhagen, from 1956 onwards. His best known projects are St. Catherine's College, Oxford, and the SAS Hotel, Copenhagen.

Arne Jacobsen's designs came into existence as brief sketches and were then modeled in plaster or cardboard in full size. He kept on working until his revolutionary ideas for new furniture had been realized at the utmost perfection. The "Ant" from 1952 became the starting point of his world fame as a furniture designer and became the first of a number of lightweight chairs with seat and back in one piece of moulded wood.

Wizard Keeper of the Enchanted Woods Enchanted Hutch~1:12th Scale

“A Little Tale”…

…. Now, let me tell you a few things about the Wizard who was the recent Guardian of all things within the Enchanted Woods. Even you, a human, might be able to grasp and imagine the enormous and gigantic responsibility it is to be the Wizard who is the one Guardian or Keeper of the Enchanted Woods.

To be chosen as the Guardian or Keeper, the wizard has to be one of the smartest, if not the smartest of all wizards, the most skilled in the art of Wizardry and spells, the undefeated champion in magic wand spell fencing, and the wisest of all wizards in existence. He or she must have a broad range and complete knowledge of every single aspect of nature, astronomy, physics, the moon phases, the seasons, the plants and trees, wizardry, chemistry, botany, weather, nature, the elements, elementals, the inhabitants, mushrooms, and all the rest.

The Guardian Wizard simply must have these abilities and powers for, you see, this wizard controls and manages every single aspect of the Enchanted Woods.

As an example of one type of responsibility on the Guardian’s shoulders, let us say there is a drought in the lower of the lowest Southern Region. The wizard must study this carefully and thoroughly and not act in haste. He or she has to study the climatic conditions, time of the year, the moon, as well as the element of water to determine why and when this element will provide the much needed rain, how much, and its motive for withholding the rains and causing such a serious drought.

For should this wizard act in haste and use a spell to force the rain, well, if the element of water had been planning to flow itself down from the clouds, then the drought might become a flood. That would be one disaster following on the heels of a previous one. So, the wizard must stay in constant touch and in good standing with the four elements, in addition to truly understanding them and their motives.

You might ask, when we just discussed a drought, “why all four elements”? Well, nothing happens in a vacuum and certainly not the four elements.

If the drought continued, the element of air, more than likely would get testy and allow its anger to build pressure up inside itself, which would finally be expelled as wind. That wind would not just merely ruffle the earth‘s feelings, but instead create a feeling of hostility of monumental proportions, thus, causing the earth to withdraw any water supplies beneath itself and drying out the grasses, trees, bushes, and all even more.

And, out of that element’s hostility, fire, which is known for its short temper, would be angered and this anger would manifest itself in a spark that would ignite the dry branches, grass, and trees of the earth Element. That one spark of anger would create a huge blazing destructive inferno and take the lives of animals, the inhabitants, the trees, grasses, bushes, insects, and all else.

So, you see, this wizard must work in tandem with the four elements so all can live in harmony and maintain balance.

That, my human friend, is the first and foremost responsibility of the Keeper of the Enchanted Woods… to keep all in balance. The same is true for you too, even as a human, you must keep yourself and your life in a state of balance on all levels or, if not, you suffer the consequences… illness, loss, poverty, want...
