    rice cooker
  • A rice cooker or rice steamer is a self-contained tabletop kitchen appliance for cooking rice. There are electrical and gas powered versions. The term can also refer to a container designed for cooking rice in a microwave oven. Dedicated rice cookers date from the earliest of times.

  • A distinctive, typically pleasant smell

  • A subtle, pervasive quality or atmosphere of a particular type

Aroma is a neighborhood beside the dump site. According to local sources, the compound was a good initiative constructed for the scavengers from the old dump site ,a.k.a. Smoky Mountain.

Nowadays, we used the term 'Smoky Mountain" rather loosely as we also called the new dump site the same name.

Sadly, after it was built the people from old Smoky Mountain found it expensive to live there and the place was left vacant.

After closing down the facility, the supposed residents moved in quickly and illegally occupied the place.

There is no water and electricity. And during rainy season, the place would be flooded.

It is a place sometimes also known as Happy Land (although the term actually refers to the new dump site). It is a place that no one want to explore. It is said that you risked being robbed and life could be threatened.

I went in this time with few NGO friends, looking for a possible place to build a new NGO.

The situation in there is alarming. But I do not smell as much danger that I need to worry about. I roomed around freely alone and talking to the people.

Although they are not as friendly as the people from Ulingan and Smoky Mountain, I have my respect on them.

It is a hazardous environment to live in.

Aroma Wilshire

Aroma Wilshire

The Aroma Wilshire complex is anchored by a Korean health club, which occupies the upper floors of the building, and a popular driving range facing Seventh Street. Of course, the giant mesh net is not popular among residents who have to look at it.

The facade appears to be an office building, but most of the complex is actually a shopping center. It's full of Korean apparel stores.

The basement has the food court, which is why the businesses down there don't do very well. The food court has been closed on weekends as of late, as the bread and butter is from Wilshire Center office workers.

Aroma is also the home of Koreatown's one and only Starbucks. K-Town doesn't hurt for coffee, as Korean owned coffeehouses teem the neighborhood. Starbucks' main rival, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, has three locations within Koreatown.

This is two blocks from the Wilshire/Western Purple Line station.

my dad used to own this shop. he retired in 2002. he sold it to the electric company that polluted the stream behind the shop. at one point there were gas pumps, but the EPA forced my dad to remove them after they wrongfully concluded the pumps were polluting the stream. "the electric company got away with murder," my mom says. imagine big business getting away with something.

i used to play with the cash register in this small room with the windows. i would take imaginary orders on the carbon copy slips. i sold girl scout cookies to my dad's costumers. my mom put the order form for the cookies in that room. with the windows. next to the coffee. there was always coffee. never any milk, only powdered creamer.

at one point, my cousin started an audio business behind these windows. the logo is still there. you can see it in the photo. next to this are the bays. that was where the action was. friends and regulars would always stop by. drink coffee. shoot the breeze. i don't know how my dad worked on cars with so many people hoovering around him. when a bay was empty, i would play on the lifts that raised the cars. whenever i visited, it was my job to answer the phones and rub kitty litter into the floor to soak up any oil.

on a photo quest, i stopped here the other day and peeked inside one of the large bay windows. the floor along the back wall where large tool boxes once stood was covered with green algae. the slime of time. i wanted to take pictures, but i couldn't. imagine me not feeling in the mood to take a photo! i didn't want "the station" (as everyone referred to it) to be remembered as desolate and dirty. run-down. potentially hazardous. instead, i searched for a section of the building that time hadn't raped. that water hadn't damaged. where glass hadn't been broken. i came to this corner. and that was the only picture i took.

why? because you get a wii if you sell 1000 boxes... er, um... and it would raise enough money for my troop to go to a broadway show or camp. (and have a wii party!)
hehehe

If you want some cookies, send me flickrmail, but PLEASE don't neglect buying from a kid to buy from me - this is really all about the girls :)

Appeal to Obama to expel China from Tibet and the UN Security Council and declare it a terrorist country for World Peace.

Appeal to Obama to expel China from Tibet and the UN Security Council and declare it a terrorist country for World Peace.

PEACE & FREE TIBET Activist Dr.Mahesh Yadav "Aman Gandhi"
has been started country wide 100days "BLOOD-SATYAGRAHA" to exple killer china from tibet & china Deleared Terriost country to save world.on UN Day 24 Oct 2009 Drawing blood portrait of US Presedent Hon'ble Mr. Barak Obama with his own bllod.at mecleod ganj dharmsala himachal pradesh.
Fifty years of China's capture of Tibet has passed but even then the world is silent over the Tibet issue. At a point where we are so awed and sensitized over the Rights of Animals and Birds, then how can we be silent about the atrocities done by China upon Tibetans. This is very dangerous not only for Tibetans but also for entire World Peace and Humanity. It seems that there is no more a difference between the Taliban's atrocity and action over Humanity and that of China's.

The recent inexpressible, horrendous & brutal crackdown and barbarous killing of calm, peace loving and naive Tibetans can be termed nothing less than an incredible violation of fundamental human rights and an insult to dignity of humanity. It’s an irony that the world is shockingly tolerant and silent towards it. The world today dwells in a global order that is committed to basic human respect and communal dignity. A big question arises and hits at the very values and principles upon which democracy, human values and human rights is based. Ironically, dignity in any manner will be on verge of loosing its significance, if we do not strongly come up now against the atrocious vampire ‘The China,’ ‘A potential threat to the Earth & Human kind.’

It is a sincere appeal UNO & World Leaders to immediately declare China a Terrorist Country and expel it from the UN Security Council and free Tibet from its clutches for the sake of saving world peace and preventing the third world war.

It is well known to the world that China is backing Pakistan and many terrorist organizations, with destructive weapons and finance. Moreover, it is only due to China, today Pakistan is well equipped with deadly nuclear weapons, which can at any time come in the hands of terrorist organizations like Al-Quida and Taliban and can bring destruction to the whole world.

Today China is proving to be dangerous not only for India, but also for world democracy, world environment, world justice and faith, international laws and world peace. Today, if UNO and all the justice and peace loving countries keep silence over the destructive actions of China, then the days are not far, when the whole world will be dragged to the third world war.

Inevitable it is, if we all want to save humanity, peace, brotherhood, non-violence and the environment, we should all come together immediately and make Tibet free from the evil clutches of China by vehemently supporting H.H. the Dalai Lama’s Gandhian way of non-violent freedom struggle for Tibet’s cause, hereby we appeal you to come up strongly in support of H.H. Dalai Lama’s Gandhian way of non-violent freedom struggle, otherwise people will always blindly turn to a destructive way of struggle. This by no means will be a right way in establishment of peace on earth. The recent development in Tibet is a testimony to it.

We need your support to H.H. Dalai Lama’s recent demand of probing into fresh events of violence in Tibet by an unbiased investigating agency as per & according to international law. It is quite obvious that it is none other than China who is responsible for it. There is a strong evidence of Tiananmen Square Massacre against China , that it brutally crushed the wave of protest of students at Tiananmen Square in April-June 1989, while they were peacefully raising voice for democracy and liberty in China . Also that, till date China had murdered almost 1.2 million Tibetans in its mission of genocide in Tibet . Hence we request you to consider our appeal and come up strongly to take some action.

How can we forget this reality that before the forcible brutal capture of Tibet by China, Tibet used to be an independent country and never ever it had been a part of China. Hence, we appeal you to kindly support in interest of saving truth, peace & humanity and consider this reality leaving aside economical, political and other interest in support of it, so that China can be forced to free Tibet unconditionally, which it claims to be a part of its mainland.

Today if, we fail to save Tibet then it will serve no good to world peace. This in turn will be a help to country like China, whose way of life is violence and it will come up more strongly and turn the world into a battle field.

Not only we but also the entire World knows that the China is… Killer of Tibetans...Killer of Freedom...Killer of Human Rights...Killer of Democracy...Killer of international Law...Killer of World-Peace...Killer of Environment...Killer of world faith...Kidnaper of Panchen Lama...!

Then why the World keeps silence over China 's atrocity over Tib

Appeal to the Great Spirit, Woodward Park

Appeal to the Great Spirit, Woodward Park

Appeal to the Great Spirit, a sculpture by Cyrus Dallin, is the last of a four-piece series called The Epic of the Indian.

Dallin, a native of Utah, was raised in close proximity to Native American children. In 1909, the sculpture was cast in Paris and won a gold medal for its exhibition in the Paris Salon. There are three full size casts of the sculpture: one is located outside the main entrance to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts another is in Muncie, Indiana in the "Y" of the intersection of Walnut and Granville streets, and considered by many Muncie residents to be symbolic of Muncie.

The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma contains the most recent full size installation in Woodward Park, at the intersection of 21st Street and Peoria. It was cast in the mid-80's by American Artbronze Fine Arts Foundry under the direction of Howard R. Kirsch.

A restoration of the Boston version was reversed at Dallin's request because he preferred the light green tones that had developed on the equestrian sculpture over time rather than the typical “statuary brown” patina the conservator applied prior to consulting him.

A bronze replica of the statue stands as the centerpiece of the Tower Room of Dartmouth College's Baker Tower, the College's main library and most iconic building. The Tower Room is one of the most elaborately decorated and embellished rooms at Dartmouth. The statue's central position as the most visible decoration of the campus' most prominent building speaks volumes to its fame and renown. Dartmouth was founded as an institution to educate the Native Americans of New England, and it often recalls that heritage through art such as Dallin's Appeal to The Great Spirit.

Vegetarian Samayal of South India: Delicious Cooking from a Tamil Cuisine

The food cooked in a brahmin home was sathvic paying special attention to the balance and nutritive value of the dishes prepared; the ladle of plain cooked dhal served before the rice and the topping of a dollop of homemade clarified butter/ghee; the balance of plain and spicy food, and the benefits of yoghurt as a final course to set right any imbalance in the food eaten for the day - were scruplously maintained. Most days even now, onion and garlic are not used in cooking. The word curry is originally derived from kari a Tamil word for a preparation of a dry vegetable with spices. Gradually the British added water and meat to curry and hence it came to be known as the Madras Curry . Hence curry/kari is basically vegetarian and later began to be associated with all meat dishes. In the Chettiar, Mudaliar, Nadar or Vellalar community a stir-fry vegetable is known as poriyal . This book is specially formatted to suit all who desire to plan a good tamil vegetarian meal - what is today known as combos. The tambram cuisine has an amazing range of vegetables cooked in a variety of methods - in the form of stir-fry, 'kuzhambus'/gravy vegetables or dhals, sambhars/vegetables with dhals, 'kootus'/vegetables with coconut or and, with plain dhals. Pacific Island Forum 2011

Thomas Nides
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State.

The United States Government, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme Announce Climate Adaptation Partnerships - September 8, 2011

September 7, 2011: U.S. Engagement in the Pacific: Fact Sheet

Partnerships Are Part of Larger (USD) $21 Million U.S. Government Climate Assistance Program in the Pacific Small Island Developing States

AUCKLAND, NZ - The United States Government today formally joined forces with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP) to advance climate change adaptation. These partnerships are part of a larger (USD) $21 million “fast start” finance commitment made by the United States for a Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) climate change program.

Through these partnerships, the United States, SPC and SPREP will strengthen the capacity of the countries and communities in the Pacific Islands to improve food security and water security, and to protect critical ecosystems. The partnerships will also help these countries access information about climate impacts to make more effective and sustainable decisions in the face of climate change. Representatives from the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development were joined by representatives from SPC and SPREP to announce the partnership at a formal signing ceremony on the margins of the Pacific Island Forum and Post-Forum Dialogue.

Rainfall changes and extreme weather events will cause heightened food security challenges for the PSIDS in the coming decades. As a result, the United States and SPC have partnered to strengthen food security among communities in Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The United States and SPREP will help improve the ability of communities in Kiribati to address the impact of climate change on water resources as well as help Kiribati’s Ministry of Health integrate adaptation into national health planning and policies. The United States and SPREP also will work together to promote healthy ecosystems in the Solomon Islands.

The United States will manage the $21 million program through the U.S. Agency for International Development, which will open an office in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in the coming months.

Last year, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the $21 million U.S. “fast start” finance assistance for the PSIDS over two years (2010-2011). The PSIDS funding is a part of a larger commitment from the United States to work with developed country partners to provide “fast start” financing from 2010-2012. The “fast start” financing was included in the negotiated packages agreed to at the UN climate talks in Copenhagen and Cancun.

Quotes:

Thomas R. Nides, Deputy Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State:
“The United States recognizes that climate change poses a significant threat to the development and security of Pacific islands. We have prioritized efforts to expand U.S. bilateral and multilateral adaptation assistance and are committed to helping Pacific Small Island Developing States adapt to the impacts of climate change.”

Nisha Biswal, Assistant Administrator, U.S. Agency for International Development:
“USAID is committed to the success of these programs. As the implementing U.S. government agency, USAID looks forward to collaborating with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Program and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community to combat the climate adaptation challenges of the Pacific islands.”

Jimmie Rodgers, Director General, Secretariat of the Pacific Community:
“The impacts of climate change are more pronounced in the Pacific Small Island Developing States. For many of their citizens, climate change touches and impacts their lives on a regular basis. For them it is about how food security can be sustained, how health is protected, how education is enhanced, how safe water supply is safeguarded, how coastal areas are protected, how human settlements are climate proofed and how the impact of high water surges and flooding are reduced. This support from the United States is historic. It represents a new partnership approach of working with regional organisations which will help bring together the many aspects of the climate change support aimed primarily at complementing and further strengthening the capacity of the participating countries to respond effectively to the challenges of climate change.”

David Sheppard, Director, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme:
“Climate change poses major challenges for the people and environments of the Pacific. In many cases it is a matter of survival. SPREP, working with SPC and other agencies, is developing and implementing practical approaches to help countries adapt to climate change. This landmark and most welcome support from

Uros Islands - Local Ladies

Uros Islands - Local Ladies

These are a couple of local ladies from the Uros Islands in traditional dress.

From Wikipedia -

The Uros is the name of a group of pre-Incan people who live on 42 self-fashioned floating man-made islets located in Lake Titicaca Puno, Peru. The Uros use the totora plant to make boats (balsas mats) of bundled dried reeds as well as to make the islands themselves.

The Uros islands at 3810 meters above sea level are just 5 Km west from Puno port [2] (20 minutes in a boat ride from Puno). Around 2,000 descendants of the Uros were counted in the 1997 census,[3] although only a few hundred still live on and maintain the islands; most have moved to the mainland. The Uros also bury their dead on the mainland in special cemeteries.

The Uros descend from a millennial town that according to legends are "pukinas" who speak Uro or Pukina and that believe they are the owners of the lake and water. They used to say that they had black blood because they did not feel the cold. Also they call themselves "Lupihaques" (Sons of The Sun). Nowadays they do not speak the Uro language, neither practice their old beliefs but keep some old costumes. [3]

The purpose of the island settlements was originally defensive, and if a threat arose they could be moved. The largest island retains a watchtower almost entirely constructed of reeds.

The Uros traded with the Aymara tribe on the mainland, interbreeding with them and eventually abandoning the Uro language for that of the Aymara. About 500 years ago they lost their original language. When this pre-Incan civilization was conquered by the Incans, they had to pay taxes to them, and often were made slaves.

The islets are made of totora reeds, which grow in the lake. The dense roots that the plants develop and interweave naturally form a natural layer called Khili (about one to two meters thick) that support the islands . They are anchored with ropes attached to sticks driven into the bottom of the lake. The reeds at the bottoms of the islands rot away fairly quickly, so new reeds are added to the top constantly, about every three months; this is what it makes exciting for tourists when walking on the island. [3] This is especially important in the rainy season when the reeds rot a lot faster. The islands last about 30 years.

Much of the Uros' diet and medicine also revolve around these totora reeds. When a reed is pulled, the white bottom is often eaten for iodine. This prevents goiter. This white part of the reed is called the chullo (Aymara [t??u?o]). Like the Andean people of Peru rely on the Coca Leaf for relief from a harsh climate and hunger, the Uros people rely on the Totora reeds in the same way. When in pain, the reed is wrapped around the place in pain to absorb it. They also make a reed flower tea.

The larger islands house about 10 families, while smaller ones, only about 30 meters wide, house only two or three. [2] There are about 2 or 3 children per family currently.

Local residents fish ispi, carachi and catfish. There are 2 types of fish foreign to the lake that were recently introduced. Trout was introduced from Canada in 1940 and the kingfish was introduced from Argentina. They also hunt birds such as seagulls, ducks and flamingos. and graze their cattle on the islets. They also run crafts stalls aimed at the numerous tourists who land on ten of the islands each year. They barter totora reeds on the mainland in Puno to get products they need like quinoa or other foods.

Food is cooked with fires placed on piles of stones. To relieve themselves, tiny 'outhouse' islands are near the main islands. The ground root absorbs the waste.

The Uros do not reject modern technology: some boats have motors, some houses have solar panels to run appliances such as TV, and the main island is home to an Uros-run FM radio station, which plays music for several hours a day.

Early schooling is done on several islands, including a traditional school and a school run by a Christian church. Older children and university students attend school on the mainland, often in nearby Puno.

"Vertical Chicken Roaster"

This is one of my favorite pieces to cook with! Fill the well with some wonderful herbs and wine, or with fruit juice and your favorite spices. Then place chicken vertically over the well (neck cavity is facing up)...then put veggies all around if desired. Roast in oven, baste if you want, and voila! The moistest roast chicken you'll ever eat...www.OstlerArtware.com

Maybe (or maybe not) my last pizza photo of the year. I tried to set up the scene here with the cookware and wine in the background. Skateboard and dirty stove don't help much. Lit from the left, about 45? angle, by strobe flash, hence the strong shadow.

'Rum' What You Brung Umeshu Pomegranite Salmon Teriyaki

'Rum' What You Brung Umeshu Pomegranite Salmon Teriyaki

I was really in the mood for salmon teriyaki on Monday. My favorite recipe is to just marinate the fish in equal parts shoyu (soy sauce), sake, and pomegranite juice (which I reduce by ~1/2). Well, I got home, and I was out of sake. And, the liquor store was closed on Labor Day. So I started looking through the cabinets for something to use instead. I came up with the following very unconventional solution - I was seriously worried I'd wasted $15 worth of fish. Judge for yourself:

1 part umeshu (Japanese plum liquor)
3 parts Mount Gay Rum
4 parts shoyu
4 parts reduced pomegranite juice (8 parts boiled down by half)

Since I got stuck at a work event last night, it sat in the fridge for 48 hours (I did remember to flip it once). When it came out the salmon was basically already cooked and much denser due to less water content. I was shocked, but it worked out great - I might even do it again. . .

Day 247 - The Teriyaki Incident

Day 247 - The Teriyaki Incident

I'd recommend Jim Beam Teriyaki marinade highly. We had it over chicken breasts and it tasted amazing.

What I wouldn't recommend, however, is removing the plastic seal then shaking the bottle (with a little vigour) without putting your finger over the (dislodged) screw top.

This picture taken with my mobile does little to capture just how far a little sauce can be spread across an averaged size kitchen and cook. Nor does it capture Kerry who was helpless with laughter at the sight of me with merinade all over my head, glasses, arms, the walls, the cooker, worktops, floor........

Yes, I'm a bloody oaf.
