‘Organism’ designed to draw curious to city’s Underground

To those wondering "what the heck is it?” at the Broadway-Kerr Garage downtown, the answer is a "Curious Organism.” The recently installed sculpture by Stan Carroll, shown above, is partially above and below ground as part of a public art program in The Underground, a pedestrian tunnel system that runs under downtown Oklahoma City. The piece is made of painted steel and its tentacles extend more than 100 feet into the tunnel system. Officials with Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. say sculpture at street level demonstrates excitement and interest through its energetic shape. Tendrils from the street level sculpture seem to penetrate the glass enclosure of the stair and follow the stair to the Underground level. At this point, those who have followed the sculpture’s exploration are situated at the first instance of directional signage in the Underground, and the sculpture has succeeded in luring in visitors who hopefully will continue the exploration on their own, officials said. The installation was designed and produced by Oklahoma City’s Beyond Metal, a hands-on design workshop and full-service sculpture, architecture, furniture, and architectural metals design and fabrication firm headed by creative director Stan Carroll.
