cheap flight to pakistan - The Idea

The Idea of Pakistan

The Idea of Pakistan

Stephen Cohen updates his critically acclaimed book with a discerning view of significant recent events in the region, particularly the devastating earthquake in Kashmir and its after affects. The quake killed over 70,000 people and left another 3 million homeless in one of the most remote, inhospitable parts of the world. Cohen observes how the catastrophic event has affected Pakistans political, military, and economic structures, as well as its relationships with other countries. Praise for the previous edition: " A lucid, penetrating and brilliantly constructed book on the state and nation of Pakistan. Cohen, an old South Asia hand, brings to the fore all his knowledge and expertise of one of America's most important allies in the war against terror." Choice " Cohens facts are indisputable, his logic cold and clear, and his omissions deliberate and meaningful." Foreign Affairs " A singularly successful effort to explain Pakistan. . . . The intellectual power and rare insight with which the book breaks through the complexity of the subject rivals that of classics that have explained other societies posing a comparable challenge to understanding." Middle East Journal " Cohen knows Pakistan well and his analysis is very perceptive." Newsline (Karachi, Pakistan) " A personal, perceptive, and policy-oriented study of Pakistan. This is an important work, by a leading expert of South Asia." Economic and Political Weekly (India) Book Review " YCohens survey of how the country has developed and why it is at the crossroads it is now is most insightful and useful. A first class primer and more as I commence my work." David B. Collins, highcommissioner of Canada, Islamabad

The Unraveling: Pakistan in the Age of Jihad

How did a nation founded as a homeland for South Asian Muslims, most of whom follow a tolerant nonthreatening form of Islam, become a haven for Al Qaeda and a rogue’s gallery of domestic jihadist and sectarian groups?
In this groundbreaking history of Pakistan’s involvement with radical Islam, John R. Schmidt, the senior U.S political analyst in Pakistan in the years before 9/11, places the blame squarely on the rulers of the country, who thought they could use Islamic radicals to advance their foreign policy goals without having to pay a steep price. This strategy worked well at first--in Afghanistan during the anti-Soviet jihad, in Kashmir in support of a local uprising against Indian rule, and again in Afghanistan in backing the Taliban in the Afghan civil war. But the government’s plans would begin to unravel in the wake of 9/11, when the rulers’ support for the U.S. war on terror caused many of their jihadist allies to turn against them. Today the army generals and feudal politicians who run Pakistan are by turns fearful of the consequences of going after these groups and hopeful that they can still be used to advance the state’s interests.
The Unraveling is the clearest account yet of the complex, dangerous relationship between the leaders of Pakistan and jihadist groups—and how the rulers’ decisions have led their nation to the brink of disaster and put other nations at great risk. Can they save their country or will we one day find ourselves confronting the first nuclear-armed jihadist state?

100 ways to please a Romanian woman (100 ways to live in Romania)

After 8 years, countless arguments and more than a few sharp kicks under the table, I feel I have collected the top 100 things a man must do to make a Romanian woman happy.

It may seem like a simple task, but due to cultural differences, their own traditions and their own set of social etiquette, a man coming from Britain or America will find that he has to learn a whole new set of social graces to truly fit into the Romanian dating scene.

To save others needing to learn all this knowledge through a trial by fire, I thought it would be great to make a small book, with a few simple guidelines, which will help foreign men find their feet in Romania. The great thing being that many of these hints and tips will also be greatly appreciated by women everywhere.

PWS-26 , Kraków Aviation Museum 31.07.2008

PWS-26 , Kraków Aviation Museum 31.07.2008

Description (from Wikipedia):

The PWS-26 was a Polish advanced training aircraft, used from 1937 to 1939 by the Polish Air Force, constructed in the PWS (Podlaska Wytwornia Samolotow - Podlasie Aircraft Factory). It was the second most numerous Polish pre-war aircraft, after the RWD-8.

Design and development

The aircraft was a final development of a series: PWS-12, PWS-14 and PWS-16, designed in response to a Polish Air Force requirement for an advanced trainer. The chief designer was Augustyn Zdaniewski. The PWS-26 was a direct development of the PWS-16bis, sharing the same silhouette, being a more militarized variant - with strengthened construction, which allowed dive-bomber training. Contrary to its predecessors, the PWS-26 could be armed with a machinegun and practice bombs. It also had other improvements and was cabable of aerobatics. A visual difference from the PWS-16bis were the canvas-covered struts of the landing gear.

The prototype was flown in 1935. After trials, its production started in 1936. By the outbreak of World War II in 1939, 320 had been built.

The PWS-26 was used in Polish military aviation from early 1937, becoming a standard type of advanced trainer for fighter pilots. It replaced most of the older PWS-14s, PWS-16s, PWS-18s (a licence-built Avro Tutor) and Bartel BM-5d's. They carried numbers starting with "81-". The PWS-26 was regarded as a successful aircraft, with good flight characteristics. During its Polish service, there were 10 fatal crashes, which was not a high number.

Operational history

After the German invasion of Poland, some PWS-26s were used in liaison flights, three aircraft in each, assigned to Armies (basic equipment of liaision flights was the RWD-8). The PWS-26 was mostly used as a replacement aircraft.

According to a report by Jan Falkowski, on September 3, 1939, while flying a PWS-26, he made a chasing Bf 109 crash near Lublin, by performing low-level manoeuvres, but there was no confirmation from the Germans. A single PWS-26 and two RWD-8s of the Polesie Operational Group, were the last Polish aircraft in the sky during the campaign. Some Czech pilots flew these aircraft during the campaign on the Polish side. Account of Jan Falkowski of the above kill. "I was only 200 feet from the ground when I tried a trick. I put my plane into a dive, all the time watching one of the Germans who was trying to get on my tail. I did little twists and turns, not allowing the enemy to get me squarely in his sights. All the time we were getting closer and closer to the ground. I brought him to about 50 feet off the ground and in the last second, dived again, then immediately pulled into a left turn. I missed the ground by a scat 10 feet, I figured. The German wasn't so lucky." First hand account of Jan Falkowski causing the Me-109 to crash. Taken from his auto biography "With The Wind In My Face" Jan Falkowski married the widowed wife of Joseph Tanski who was his commander during this time. Joseph Tanski was my grandfather.

Some PWS-26s were shot down by the Germans, at least one was shot down by the Soviets on September 19. A large number of PWS-26s were destroyed on the ground by the Germans or burned by the withdrawing Poles. A dozen or so were evacuated to Romania and at least 33 to Latvia. This latter group were captured by the Germans - in 1941. After some modification, 28 of them were sold to Romania. The Romanian aircraft (including those evacuated), entered service in civilian and military aviation (and used there until the 1950s). Two were tested in Germany. A dozen or so were captured by the Soviets in Poland and also used by them for testing.

Survivors

Only one PWS-26 (Nr. 81-123) has survived. Captured by the Germans in September 1939, it was part of the German aviation museum, displayed with the Luftwaffe markings VG+AS. The aircraft was found in Poland after the war and used until 1953 by civilian operators with the markings SP-AJB. It is currently preserved in the Polish Aviation Museum in Krakow.

Only preserved machine of this type. Polish Air Force fighter training aircraft just from before the World War 2

From Wikipedia:

DESPRE AUTOR:

S-a nascut in 1938, intr-o familie instarita din Deva.

In paralel continua sa lucreze in diverse domenii, pentru a se intretine.

I played in Photoshop today, clearly. :) I think I finally mastered clipping masks, although I will admit, that I probably can refine my edges a little more. Last week I made a business trip to North Carolina, a pretty quick one, but on the way back, I had a three hour lay over. So I went to the tunnel between the terminals because I had to go from C to F anyway, and shot a few shots. I didn't have my wide angle with me, so I decided to put a little different take on it, I took this shot of one of the panels on the side, and then clipped images into it. I well remember when I first started flying a lot in 2001 right after 9-11 and airports were, soooooooo quiet. I remember that I liked to go through this tunnel because usually there were quite a few people in it, and the activity somehow gave me comfort during that time. I love the light display in there, I understand it is actually considered an art installation and is called "Skys the Limit" It always makes me think and I enjoy it.

I'm so crankypants, I don't care that ixould have tried taking a
better "we hate flying" photo. We've been on the plane, on the ground,
for two hours now. We were delayed by an air-conditioning problem that
involved turning the heat on us :(

We're heading back for more fuel and a full explanation, according
to our pilot.

Bonus: a guy sitting ahead of me was on that famous flight (I learned
about it from Clay Shirky) that was grounded for hours and hours, and
resulted in the Passenger Bill of Rights. He's not in a bad mood, so
maybe I'll take my cue from him. Or maybe he's a hollow shell from his
previous experience.

More crankypant posts to come!

Best of David Bowie

AUCTION DESCRIPTION

Though one of rock's most influential figures, David Bowie's accomplishments are pocked by some distinct ironies. His willful efforts at being a musical and visual chameleon spurred triumphs in genres as diverse as folk, glam, new wave, and electronica. Given the dizzying range and success of his '70s incarnations--from Ziggy to the Thin White Duke to the gaunt, goth-cypher of Low and Heroes--he seemed the artist most well-equipped to weather the changing tides of taste and trend, yet saw his career essentially shrink to cult status after scoring his biggest triumphs when he reshaped the soulless, dance-oriented club music of the early '80s into his own image. This 20-track compilation does little to address the Chinese puzzle that has been Bowie's post-'85 career, but it does deliver an artistically dizzying slate of hits as it skips from one early peak to the next, from evocative cabaret ("Space Oddity," "Changes") through muscular glam-rock ("Suffragette City," "The Jean Genie") to R&B ("Young Americans," "Fame") and post-punk flirtations ("Ashes to Ashes," "Fashion") to the dance-club hits ("Let's Dance," "China Girl," "Modern Love") and '80s one-off duets ("Under Pressure" with Queen, "Dancing in the Streets" with Mick Jagger) that essentially marked the end of his superstar reign. Whole eras and at least one classic '70s album (Low) go completely unaddressed, but all of Bowie's signature hits are here, as well as Earthling's powerful, underappreciated "I'm Afraid of Americans." --Jerry McCulley

The Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall (Thai: ????????????????????) is a former reception hall within Dusit Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. It is now a museum.

The throne hall was used as the headquarters of the People's Party during the four days of the 1932 Revolution (June 24-27), which transformed the country's political system from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional one. The first National People's Assembly convened on June 28, 1932 in this throne hall. After that, it was used as the Parliament House until 1974 when the new Parliament House was opened nearby. However, the old Parliament House is still used for the State Opening of Parliament marking the first assembly in consequence of a general election for the House of Representatives.

Thai Royal Convoy at Esplanade Centre, Bangkok

A Thai Royal Person visited the Esplanade Centre, Bangkok. I photographed the vehicles in her or her convoy parked outside.

The "royal" cars with "Bureau of the Royal Household" license plates included 2 Mercedes-Benz E Class saloons, 1 BMW 5-Series saloon and a Mercedes-Benz Vito APV. All are painted cream and look most impressive.

The escorting police vehicles included two silver BMW 5-Series saloons, a Traffic Police and two special police BMW motorcycles. The special police vehicles seem to be dedicated for royal protextion duties.

I don't know if the new black Audi TT was part of the group. It seems likely it was as it was parked adjacent to the royal convoy.

Domestic Disturbance

Frank Morrison finds out that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to his son's new step-father and does all he can to make sure that his son is safe and stays alive.
Genre: Suspense
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 16-APR-2002
Media Type: DVD

If you focus on the effective casting of John Travolta and Vince Vaughan, Domestic Disturbance may grab your attention as a thriller that hits too close to home. After playing a greasy villain in Swordfish, Travolta ably serves up the good-guy charm as a divorced father who must rescue his teenage son from a murderous new stepfather, played by Vaughan with bad-tempered relish. Director Harold Becker is worthy of better material (like his earlier hit Sea of Love), but he handles this B-movie potboiler with professional flair, particularly in the setup involving an accomplice (the ever-reliable Steve Buscemi) who threatens to destroy Vaughan's small-town respectability. The plot's about as plausible as Britney Spears in a remake of Sophie's Choice, relying heavily on lame-brained cops and vast chasms in logic, but by the time Travolta and Vaughan engage in their inevitable showdown, even childless viewers may feel a twinge of parental instinct. --Jeff Shannon

Domestic Abuse Candlelit Vigi December 2009

Candlelit vigil puts domestic abuse in the spotlight

Residents, workers and shoppers attended the candlelit vigil to remember the dozens of victims of domestic abuse who are killed each year.

More than 17,000 women in Manchester experience domestic abuse every year and national figures show that two women are killed each week by their partner or ex partner.
The vigil was held on 10 December at 5pm in the Peace Gardens. The vigil marks the end of 16 days of activity to raise awareness of domestic abuse and violence against women.
The 16 Days Campaign has been used as a blue print for groups and individuals around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women, to demonstrate the solidarity of everyone around the world working to tackle violence against women, to share new and effective measures for dealing with violence against women and to put pressure on governments to adopt effective policies.
Councillor Sue Murphy, Manchester City Council's Lead Member for Women's Issues, said: "As one in four women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, this is something that can affect anyone. The vigil was organised to draw attention to the facts about domestic abuse and to highlight the help available."
The women's Domestic Abuse Helpline can be contacted on 0161 636 7525. The 24 hour helpline number is 0808 2000 247.

Well, I knew that Celtic Thunder was coming to Toronto. While I had every desire to see the concert, I had no intention to pay the crazy service fees -- until my friend got a Buy 1 Get 1 free deal. So, off we went...

ABOUT A FREE REPUBLIC OF MUNICIPALITIES OF MEXICO

Not prepared to live without political campaigns proposed real significance, therefore, important and urgent to address what is federalism and municipal autonomy. If federalism is to centralize powers soon dispersed, as happened in the United States, can also be used to decentralize power unit originally as Mexico, then why not go throw the stale chimera. I refer to this goal is not reached in the town where they develop on their own concept of autonomy, freed from the shackles that Constitutional Article 115 states.

Or break the straitjacket that the legislatures that have local councils have the power to suspend, revoke the mandate of some of its members, and even reported missing, is the clearest language of castration, and co antithesis of the so-called municipal autonomy hanging like a sword of Damocles over the head of the local authorities.

The City first appeared in the public law of Rome. With the passage of time and taking advantage of the weakness of the monarchy during the Middle Ages, the ancient city, now with Germanic influence strengthened its independence especially in Spain. Since then it has become a natural bearer of freedom.

Would not understand the idea of free city in Mexico without first knowing the modern idea of the federal system. This form of government has been determined by the United States of America.

American federalism was born and before and after the War of Independence (1775 to 1783). He met a congress of representatives of the assemblies of the seven colonies, adopted the "Plan of Union of Albany, whose architect was Benjamin Franklin. That first original program and the federal government in the year 1754 is considered the starting point of all subsequent developments. But this conference was not accepted by the colonial assemblies, as they should not cede any power to tax and rates.

On the initiative of the chamber of Massachusetts in October 1765 met in New York the First Congress intercolonial revolutionary tendencies of the law that censored tone. That was the first concept of Americanism, as the representative of South Carolina said: "We must stand firm in the vast field of natural rights. Here there must be citizens of either New York or New England, but we are all Americans.

When England tried to punish Massachusetts, the other colonies made common cause with it, which set the tone for the first continental congress and mature constitutionalism in America. Unlike the spontaneous naturalness that gave life to the federal pact in U.S., Mexico and existed as a unitary state when they are copied and adopted the American form of government in 1824.

At the consummation of Mexico's independence in 1821, several states were emerging in the independent living, but a unitary state that corresponded to the former viceroyalty. Members of the first constituent assembly meeting in 1822, sent its representatives to the new united previously declared unitary state, including the institutions of Central America (which had not belonged to New Spain) and then send its representatives to that meeting.

Iturbide dissolved the Constituent first rebellion erupted in the House led by Santa Ana Mata Waking the ambition of the provincial councils of the Constitution of Cadiz. But it's the fall of the empire of Agustin de Iturbide and reinstalled the component, where some provinces demanded the introduction of the new federal system.

The Second Constitutional Congress issued its Constitutive Act on January 31, 1824. Where he recorded the first genuine constitutional decision of the Mexican people and it first appeared, in fact and in law the states. Prior law did not exist. Nor in fact existed, because the threats of secession by some provinces such as Oaxaca, Jalisco and Zacatecas immediately preceding the adoption of the system can not be interpreted as de facto integration of independent states that were never established, but as a means of pressure and form of rebellion, and later in our history has always repeated that the authorities of a state declared that it "reaffirms its sovereignty." In sum, rather than the states that have given life to the "ACT" as in United States of America, here the "ACT" begat states.

As explained above if federalism is to centralize powers soon spread, should be used to decentralize powers previously consolidated, following the most pure root of our history. For what really bring the federal states and municipalities?

Dissect federalism is a form of decentralization. There are three degrees: the commune or municipality, which has some administrative autonomy within the framework and under the supervision of the central state, the autonomous province which is given political autonomy, but the constitution of which it is imposed by the dominant state, the state member Land or enjoys constitutional autonomy.

Air Canada's Galaxy FLIGHT 621—Toronto/GTA's LARGEST AIR DISASTER

Air Canada's Galaxy FLIGHT 621—Toronto/GTA's LARGEST AIR DISASTER

EVER SINCE I WAS A BOY, my first memories of looking at a newspaper were of the July 5, 1970 Flight 621 crash in Toronto-Gore. We got the Toronto Telegram delivered to our door and, Johnny Lynch, my next door neighbour on Blackfriar Avenue in Etobicoke, delivered the Daily Star throughout the rest of the neighbourhood. He always had papers leftover. And when he did—we got one.

I remember all the grim crash photos from both competing papers.

Later, through the years the Toronto SUN, and the Toronto Star, would run articles revisiting the Flight 621 crash, usually when another significant air disaster had just happened.

I always wondered where the 621 crash location actually was. It bugged me that I didn't know.

Oh, well I thought. I guess I'll never know.

How wrong I was.

After a November, 2001 Mike Strobel article appeared in the Toronto SUN which revisited the Flight 621 crash by talking to eyewitnesses, I discovered that the crash site was somewhere less than three miles from where I had just purchased a new home!

Fancy that! I assured myself that now, I could indeed, even 33 years later, find the mysterious crash site.

I was right.

That's all I'll say for now. About that.

With the front page of Carol Parr's (Flight 621 crash eyewitness) Toronto Star in hand, Toronto Daily Star back then, I was able to stake out the crash arena quite accurately—just from that front page photo!

And with a little help from my friends.

Eventually, those friends would be known loosely as the Friends of Flight 621. Comprised of eyewitnesses and the concerned, we would discover a lot of things about the crash. I mean, things other than the human bones of the crash victims that kept popping up, through the years, in the poorly cleaned-up field. It was bad enough discovering someone's skull pieces, finger joints, kneecap, arm or leg bone shards mixed amongst abandoned Douglas Aircraft parts…but then I discovered the truly unexpected!

That the crash didn't have to happen!

That EVEN AS the Air Canada DC-8 was on fire quite spectacularly, and in the early stages of crash sequence…there was still ample time to turn it all around…and save everyone on board! No lives need have been lost!!

Not one!!

'nuff said, for now—

Wait—one more thing—in the lower part of the picture the reader sees the ominous caption, "Pilot faced terrible choice-and nothing could help him".

Well, that's not true.

(this article, as all my articles are in this format, are usually revised several times , even days after posting)

Flight To Arras

FLIGHT TO ARRAS. SURELY I must be dreaming. It is as if I were fifteen again. I am back at school. My mind is on my geometry problem. Leaning over the worn black desk, I work away dutifully with compass and ruler and protractor. I am quiet and industrious. Near by sit some of my schoolmates, talking in murmurs. One of them stands at a blackboard chalking up figures. Others less studious are playing bridge. Out of-doors I see the branch of a tree swaying in the breeze. I drop my work and stare at it. From an industrious pupil I have become an idle one. The shining sun fills me with peace. I inhale with delight the childhood odor of the wooden desk, the chalk, the blackboard in this schoolhouse in which we are quartered. I revel in the sense of security born of this daydream of a sheltered childhood. What course life takes, we all know. We are children, we are sent to school, we make friends, we go to collegeand we are graduated. Some sort of diploma is handed to us, and our hearts pound as we arc ushered across a certain threshold, marched through a certain porch, the other side of which we are of a sud den grown men. Now our footfalls strike the ground with a new assurance. We have begun to make our way in life, to take the first few steps of our way in life. We are about to measure our strength against real adver saries. The ruler, the T square, the compass have become weapons with which we shall build a world, triumph over an enemy. Playtime is over. All this I see as I stare at the swaying branch. And I see too that schoolboys have no fear of facing life. They champ at the bit. The jealousies, the trials, the sorrows of the life of man do not intimidate the schoolboy. But what a strange schoolboy I am I sit in this schoolroom, a schoolboy conscious of my good fortune and in no hurry to face life. A schoolboy aware of its cares. . . . Dutertre comes by, and I stop him. Sit down. Ill do some card-tricks for you. Dutertre sits facing me on a desk as worn as mine. I can see his dangling legs as he shuffles the cards. How pleased with myself I am when I pick out the card he has in mind He laughs. Modestly, I smile. P6nicot comes up and puts his arm across my shoulder. What do you say, old boy How tenderly peaceful all this is A school usher is it an usher opens the door and summons two among us. They drop their ruler, drop their compass, get up, and go out. We follow them with our eyes. Their schooldays are over. They have been released for the business of life. What they have learnt, they are now to make use of. Like grown men, they are about to try out against other men the formulas they have worked out. Strange school, this, where each goes forth alone in turn. And without a word of farewell. Those two who have just gone through the door did not so much as glance at us who remain behind. And yet the hazard of life, it may be, will transport them farther away than China. So much farther When schooldays are past, and life has scattered you, who can swear that you will meet again The rest of us, those still nestling in the cosy warmth of our incubator, go back to our murmured talk. Look here, Dutertre. To-night. But once again the same door has opened. And like a court sentence the words ring out in the quiet school room Captain de Saint-Exupery and Lieutenant Dutertre report to the major Schooldays are over. Life has begun. Did you know it was our turn Penicot flew this morning. Oh, yes. The fact that we had been sent for meant that we were to be ordered out on a sortie...

Paris is the capital and primate city of France. Paris is located in the north-bending arc of the river Seine and includes two islands, the Ile Saint-Louis and the larger Ile de la Cite, which form the oldest part of the city.
Much of contemporary Paris is the result of the vast mid-nineteenth century urban remodelling. For centuries, the city had been a labyrinth of narrow streets and half-timber houses, but, beginning in 1852, the Baron Haussmann's urbanisation program involved leveling entire quarters to make way for wide avenues lined with neo-classical stone buildings of bourgeoisie standing.

But she can't remember anything. Not even her own name.... At the hotel she finds more questions than answers. She hears piano music, but can't find the piano. And what about the pieces of paper flying around the plain? While she tries to mend these pieces together, the pieces in her mind start to come together as well. And then she remembers the question she really wants to be answered. DEPARTURE TIME is an amazing journey of a girl in two stories. There is the girl in the hotel with the fox and the rat. And there is the girl with a father who travels a lot and who suggests to write a story together. A story about talking animals. But she doesn't want to. She is angry with him, because he can't make her birthday in time. Again. The two stories slowly start to intertwine and come together in a surprising ending.

Iraqi Airways 747 YI-AGN [Tigris] at London Heathrow

Iraqi Airways 747 YI-AGN [Tigris] at London Heathrow

Smart looking Iraqi Airways 747,s were a common sight in London Heathrow throughout the 1980,s.

Here YI-AGN taxies for departure before returning to its homebase of Baghdad.

Iraqi Airways were founded in 1945 and is one of the oldest airlines in the Middle East. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq brought about a cessation of activities when the airline was grounded.

After the War Iraqi Airways announced plans to resume international services under a new and separate company called "Iraqi Airways Company", which would build a new airline and protect it from the legal problems related to the regime of Saddam Hussein. Operations restarted on 3 October 2004 with a flight between Baghdad and Amman with a B737.

It is unlikely that the stunning looking 747's will be seen flying any time soon in those colours.

YI-AGN a 747-270C was the 287th 747 built, and was delivered new to Iraqi Airways on the 24th June 1976.

It is named "Tigris" after The Tigris River, which is the eastern member of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia, the other being the Euphrates. The river flows from the mountains of southeastern Turkey through Iraq.

One of the other 747,s in the fleet was named "Euphrates" after the other river.

The aircraft is currently reported as stored.

One Last Goodbye

One Last Goodbye

British Airways introduced the Boeing 757 in 1983 and continued to operate the type until 30 October 2010.

During its last month in service, the airline repainted one of the remaining three in their very first colour scheme, named after the brand creators Negus and Negus.

Ever since that last flight, this special 757 has languished at Heathrow Airport despite being earmarked for DHL for freighter conversion.

Then I learnt yesterday that today it would make a flight to Gatwick. With the proposed time of departure published on the net, I went for a shot, although I knew it would be high like this - Gatwick is not very far at all and hardly needed any runway!

So, all the BA 757s have left Heathrow - an end of an era.

The Good Rain: Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest (Vintage Departures)

A fantastic book! Timothy Egan describes his journeys in the Pacific Northwest through visits to salmon fisheries, redwood forests and the manicured English gardens of Vancouver. Here is a blend of history, anthropology and politics.

Egan succeeds in capturing the richness and beauty of the Pacific Northwest (and it's possibly imminent destruction) with rich description, appropriately chosen and reported interviews, and visits to exactly the places I would have chosen for such a book. From manicured gardens in essentially English Vancouver, B.C., to Indian reservations in western Washington, to the proud rural communities in eastern Washington, and visits to the precipitous peaks and brooding volcanos of the Cascade Mountains, Egan captures the presences and peoples of this region more effectively than most any other book I have encountered. Highly Recommended.
