Small potted garden grows

Pictured: The pot on the left was 6 small bright fuscia paintbrush plants and one large one with fuscia, yellow and orange blossoms, all repotted in that big terra cotta pot. It's so pretty, i'm grumpy it's in the shadow of the patio umbrella. :(

Next is the little pink polkadot leaved thing, I never know what those are called. (My strongest memory of these was that my mom and dad used to let me buy one every summer when we'd plant the yard, and of course I'd kill it.) Next to it is another odd dollar store plant with long thin leaves and yellow polkadots, repotted with some of the alyssum I grew from seed.

In back behind those two is the little ivy plant we bought at the dollar store, repotted in a lovely chinese-style vase we inherited from our recently passed neighbor George. It's doing great, which shocks me since the dollar store plants really are kind of crap plus my dead-doing. Go little Ivy, go!

Then of course the big basil plant, growing like a weed, and the one remaining indoor cactus we had from when we were trying to remove the evil from next door (long story, but it totally worked! hence only one living cactus left, heh!).

WOW.........my boyfriend and I drove way the heck all over So. CA, I took a zillion pictures of everything in sight and I ended up posting a photo of an Alyssum blossom. (It's amazing how many crappy pictures I can take in one day.) If I had known that ahead of time, I could have just run over to Armstrong Nursery and saved myself some time and gas!

The good part about this is that I never realized that Alyssum looked like this up close considering that this is really around 1" in diameter. The stamens look like grape seeds. I want to pick them out!

This was my breakfast today, my own take on the full english. I don't personally believe that hash browns are traditionally a part of the full english because I'd never even heard of them before the 1990s so I think they're a recent import and revision like cranberries with turkey. I don't eat this often for obvious reasons. Even so, when I declare "I've put on two stone since I gave up smoking in January 2005" I'm probably downplaying the part these occasional breakfasts have played in that increase. In my opinion, the full english is one of the triumvirate of finest english common dishes, the other two being fish and chips, and bubble and squeak.

I've never really ever officially learned how to make gum paste flowers, we kind of just make things up as we go and I really liked how this one turned out. We started with a peachy colored gum paste and then airbrushed it with copper and brown mixture and then painted the edges of the petals with gold. Super happy with how it turned out.

Coventry Ribbon

This is a piece of the Coventry Ribbon, an elaborate floral silk ribbon that was woven for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The Great Exhibition
The Great Exhibition was held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1851. Its aim was to show the rest of the world Britain's industrial might and inventiveness. Coventry was encouraged to play its part as a leading producer of ribbons.

Many individual Coventry manufacturers exhibited at the Crystal Palace and several won prizes for their work. In addition to these individuals the organising committee in Coventry decided to raise money to pay for the production of one particularly beautiful ribbon to be shown at the exhibition.
This ribbon was known as the Coventry Town ribbon. About 60 to 70 yards of it were produced in the six months leading up to the exhibition. At the exhibition the ribbon was awarded a prize medal 'for a ribbon exhibiting much taste and skill in its production'. Queen Victoria, visiting the exhibition on 12th July, was very impressed by the ribbon and ordered a large quantity of it.

How the ribbon was made
The job of designing the ribbon was given to the School of Art in Coventry. This institution had been set up in 1843 to teach the art of design to young people and in particular to improve standards of design in the ribbon industry. The designer of the ribbon was Thomas Clack, a 20 year old student at the school. The design was then drafted – that is it was reproduced as a large diagram for a weaver to follow. This job was done by Robert Barton. Finally it was woven on a specially made jacquard loom under the supervision of Thomas Robinson. A jacquard loom used a series of punched cards to automatically control the weaving of the pattern, rather like an early computer. This complex ribbon required 10,000 cards! The total cost of producing the ribbon was ?150

Ribbon weaving in Coventry
In the early Victorian period Coventry was dominated by the ribbon industry, as it had been for around 150 years. Ribbons were popular fashion accessories and had a variety of uses – including decorating hair and trimming hats and dresses. Coventry was the centre of ribbon production in Britain and ribbon weaving was Coventry's main industry. During this period around half the population of Coventry made a living from ribbon weaving.

Ribbon weaving was a precarious trade. When ribbons were in fashion and highly sort after the weaver could do quite well. But if fashions changed and trade declined, the weaver would have no work and therefore no income. To avoid going into the workhouse many weavers joined friendly and benefit societies to support them when work was short. However the ribbon industry suffered a major collapse in 1860 and thousands of Coventry weavers were thrown out of work. Many emigrated to other parts of the world.

Lesly's Purple & Moss Wedding; Mother of the Bride, Bridesmaid's Necklaces Set

Lesley's silk bridesmaid dresses were purple with a gold undertone, and her mother wore a moss silk ensemble. The manufacturers' photos didn't show the true color of the fabric, but they were able to send fabric swatches for me to match up. For both designs, I used a mixture of shapes of beads and shades of color to blend in with all the depths of color in the fabric. Each bridesmaid necklace featured a different purple jade flower pendant, and the mother of the bride's necklace shone with an amazing solid silver floral pendant.

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Coconut Filling:
3/4 cup coconut custard (recipe above), cold
3/4 cup very cold heavy cream

Coconut Buttercream:
2 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups confectioners' sugar
3/4 cup coconut custard (recipe above) (cold)
Pinch fine sea salt

Cake:
2 tablespoons softened butter, for pans
2 1/4 cups cake flour, plus more for pans
1 cup whole milk, at room temperature
6 large egg whites, at room temperature
1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 12 pieces, slightly cold

For the toasted coconut:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Spread the coconut evenly onto a baking sheet and toast until lightly golden brown, stirring once, 8 to 10 minutes. Turn off the oven and let the coconut sit in the oven until very dry and crunchy, about 15 minutes longer.

For the custard:

Combine the milks and vanilla bean and seeds in a medium nonreactive saucepan and bring to a simmer over low heat.
Whisk together the yolks, sugar and cornstarch in a large bowl. Slowly whisk the warm milk into the egg mixture then return the mixture to the pot over medium heat and bring to a boil, whisking constantly, until thickened. Scrape the mixture into a bowl and whisk in the rum and vanilla extract. Let cool to room temperature then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours.

For the filling:

Combine the custard and cream in a bowl and whip until soft peaks form.

For the buttercream:

Beat the butter and sugar in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add the coconut custard and salt and beat until combined and smooth.

For the cake:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour 2 (9 by 2-inch) round cake pans and line bottoms with parchment paper.
Whisk together the milk, egg whites, vanilla bean seeds and vanilla extract in a medium bowl.

In the bowl of a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With mixer running at low speed, add the butter, one piece at a time and continue beating until mixture resembles moist crumbs. Add all but 1/2 cup of milk mixture to crumbs and beat at medium speed until the mixture is pale and fluffy, about 1 1/2 minutes. With mixer on low speed, add remaining 1/2 cup of the milk mixture, increase speed to medium and beat 30 seconds more. Scrape sides of bowl and mix for 20 seconds longer. Divide the batter evenly between the cakes pan and smooth the tops using a rubber spatula.

Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few crumbs attached, 22 to 24 minutes. Cool in the pan on baking rack for 10 minutes. Run a small knife around the side of the pan and invert cakes onto the baking rack, removing parchment paper, and let cool completely, about 45 minutes.

To Assemble:

Using a long serrated knife, slice each cake horizontally into 2 layers. Reserve 1 of the flat bottom layers for the top of the cake. Place another layer on a cardboard round cut side up and brush with some of the coco lopez cream. Spoon 1/3 of the coconut filling onto the cake and using a small offset metal spatula, spread it into an even layer, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edge of the cake. Repeat with 2 more layers. Brush the cut side of the reserved cake layer with the remaining syrup. Place the layer cut side down on top of the cake.
Frost the sides and top of the cake with the buttercream. Pat the coconut onto the sides of the cake and sprinkle the remaining coconut on the top of the cake.

Note: when I made this cake I omitted the coconut simple syrup I used coco Lopez cream to brush on the cakes, and it came out absolutely delishes

And on the buttercream I used 2 cups of confectioners' sugar not 1/3 cup otherwise this buttercream would come out to buttery.
