Berger

Took this of my friend and fellow Photographer, Chris Berger yesterday. We had gone to a local park to take some shots of some bikers doing jumps and such, and i took this while waiting for the serious bikers to turn up.

Shot details:
Key: Canon 430EXII (off camera) Camera left w/ a makeshift paper modifier. (details below)
Rim: Sun

Took the shot into PS5 for eye, skin, and basic edits, then decided to try it in B&W.

As for the flash, I fired it by slaving it with the 7D's system, and i had taped 2 pieces of paper around the flash head to make a soft light modifier.

The Black Clawson Co. was world famous for their hand crafted big iron things. However, when people came to realize that there is no specific use for heavy iron objects such as this, they were tossed aside and the company went out of business.

Absolutely none of this is true. I just was fascinated by this large piece of metal.

CANOPY DWELLINGS : DWELLINGS

CANOPY DWELLINGS : OUTDOOR BLINDS.

Canopy Dwellings

canopy dwellings

"Owl's eyes" cliff dwellings

That is "Mormon tea" in the right foreground.
Genus: Ephedra and species (perhaps): torreyana.
It would have been as a medicinal plant by the ancient Puebloans.

The 1892 Moorehead expedition visited, named, and gathered artifacts at these cliff dwellings. It is interesting to read their description of reaching these difficult ruins by lowering themselves down on a rope, which was anchored to a juniper tree or sage.

They mention "faded cut steps" at the site, which I was able to photograph with the telephoto. There are two caves at this site, both containing cliff dwellings. What a job it must have been to haul water to this site.

"Owl's eyes" is my name not the official name of these cliff dwellings.

MOOREHEAD’S 1892 ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN EXPLORING EXPEDITION

In 1892 an expedition, with an unusual name the “Illustrated American Exploring Expedition [IAEE]”, visited this site and a hundred others in Colorado and Utah.

The five member expedition was led by Warren K. Moorehead, who had worked as an archaeologist at the Smithsonian Institute. Members of the team included a geologist; artist; entomologist; and a surveyor & mapmaker.

I had never heard of Moorehead or his expedition until I found the name and date of the expedition at a site named by them, called Monarch Cave ruins. The initials were neatly carved into a sandstone wall at that site.

American Illustrated was a magazine and the idea for the expedition was to find evidence for the “lost tribe” in order to publish a lead article in the magazine about same and to collect artifacts (pot hunting) for the upcoming 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

(note: if you have never read the national bestselling book: The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson, you would enjoy it. A true page turner).

It seems that everywhere I go these days, Moorehead and his team had been in 1892. They did work at Hovenweep, McElmo Creek and all over Cedar Mesa. Many of the sites in the area were named by this expedition.

In the end the magazine went broke, leaving Moorehead holding the bag on some of the expedition expenses, but at least the artifacts they collected, were preserved (if not in context) to be enjoyed by others in museums, rather than in the living room of some wealthy, now illegal, “pot hunter’.

PDA: PLEASE DON’T ASK. I asked for some help finding a couple of the cliff dwellings and Ancient Puebloan rock art panels which my wife and I hiked to and photographed on this day. I promised those who helped me that I would not be specific as to their exact location. I intend to honor those promises.

If you recognize any of the sites from my photographs, please don’t reveal the locations in your comments. Do as you like on your Flickr photo site, but please honor my request on my Flickr site.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~CEDAR MESA ROAD TRIP 17-26TH APRIL 2011 ~ Mr. & Mrs. Oldmantravels
In all we spent ten days and nine nights on the road, camping in the back of our pickup truck two nights, sleeping in our backpacking tent in Grand Gulch, and the other six nights luxuriating in the comforts of a motel room. Gas prices ranged from a low of $3.56 a gallon to $3.89, which was the highest we paid on this trip. We saw several $4.00 a gallon signs along the way.
Our figure 8 route took us through portions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. We drove a couple of roads we had never traveled; met some truly wonderful people; took many interesting day hikes to places we had never been, and tried out some new internal frame backpacks on a short backpacking trip into Grand Gulch.
Most of our activity, and time spent, was centered around the Cedar Mesa area of Southeastern Utah. Though the weather forecast did not look favorable for the first portion of our time in Utah, it turned out fine. It wasn’t until the return portion of our road trip, where we ran into several storms (thunder and lightening storms, a nasty hail storm, and a few snow storms thrown in).
If any of you are interested, in for whatever reason on following the travel portion of our road trip, you can connect these dots to form the figure 8 route we traveled, from start to finish: Home in Eastern Washington; Pendleton; Boise; Salt Lake City; Spanish Fork; Price; Green River; Hanksville; Natural Bridges National Monument; Blanding; [several days spent in the Cedar Mesa area]; Moab; Cisco; Mack; Rangely; Dinosaur; Vernal; Duchesne; Heber City; Salt Lake City; Wendover; Elko; Lamoille; Mountain City; Owyhee; Mountain Home; Boise; Pendleton; & home.
Stairway of the brave
Look along the spine of the steep slickrock cliff face just right of center in this photo and you will see the "moki steps" carved in by the builders of these cliff ruins. The Moorehead expedition members described these "steps" in their report of their 1892 visit.
The 1892 Moorehead expedition lowered themselves down by a rope, which was secured to a bush, to reach these ruins. They named the ruins and collected artifacts for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.
The "Owl's eyes" is what I am calling them and not the proper name given to them by the Moorehead group.
So I'm surprised that this one turned out anyway.
2006 was a great year. But it wasn't without tragedy. My family dog, Snoopy, finally died after living what seemed a damn long time. He was going deaf and blind towards the end so it was good to see him go peacefully as I'm sure he wasn't enjoying life in the end. Not a bad innings for a dog that came home in a carton of beer from the pub!
Here's the rundown of what I did:
- swirled on Porcelain Girl foundation until I was sufficiently paled (didn't take too long, I only went paler one shade! I am SO WHITE, omgosh.)
- swirled on Afterglow Mineral Veil for some shimmer and even more paleness (wish I had your babuki brush!)
- used Flushed brozer in the hollows of my cheeks and the sides of my nose for some depth
- brushed on U Minx eyeshadow over my whole lid, only moving slightly up into the crease
- used Corker on the outer corner and crease and blended it in towards the center
- also used Corker as an eyeliner on the bottom to give some definition to the eye without making it look too harsh
- used Jet as an eyeliner on my top lid
- used Glitz on the inner corners of my eyes, the browbone and along my cheekbones lightly for some Cullen sparkle!
- lots of my yummy mascaras (Maybelline in the green tube, Cover Girl Last Blast)
- combined about 3 lipsticks and glosses to get a chic Alice-y shade
- posed so fierce that Tyra Banks would be proud (:P)
Blind Spot
Euan told me about an incredible thing that happened as he and Martha shared a couch in a coffee shop in Glasgow's City Centre.
Two men entered the shop and approached them holding pieces of card, on which Euan assumed would be written a plea for money. But the men brought the pieces of card right up to Martha's and Euan's faces, and there were no words written on them. One was so close to his face, Euan said, that he could see nothing but card.
Euan isn't the kind of person who will accept someone infringing his comfort, but before he had a chance to even register what was going on, the men turned around and walked swiftly out of the shop. It was some minutes later before Martha noticed that her phone, which had been sitting on the table in front of them, was gone.
Astonishing for its sheer audacity, it seems that keeping something where you can see it isn't enough when thieves can stop you from seeing for even a moment.
Fun at the design stage but rather time-consuming in practice, measuring out all the swags and then discovering that chocolate sugarpaste is softer than usual so the swags sag gently downwards, leaving sticky chocolate marks on the ivory paste beneath, as you try to affix them.... Not to mention my daughter (makes a change from it being my son, I suppose), who can now reach the door handles and let herself into the dining room whilst my back as turned, found the chocolate roses and started nibbling before I even knew she was gone!
Everything was sugarpaste, no Royal icing at all.
