Belts and shoulder straps of 1/48 Grumman F7F-3 model airplane

Belts and shoulder straps of 1/48 Grumman F7F-3 model airplane

Here's the cockpit of the AMT (now Italeri) F7F-3 Tigercat. All straight out of the box except for the belt, shoulder straps, buckles and hardware I added. The belts are lead foil from a wine bottle, the hardware is styrene plastic. If I'd smoothed the edge of the seat bucket before I took the picture it would look REALLY nice. This photo is about 1.5 life-size.

I used an Eduard US Navy WWII belts detail set and photos in the Squadron F7F Tigercat In Action book as references. The seatbelt is broader than the shoulder belt, and the tug-straps on the shoulder adjusters are the narrowest.

I built the belts up from their mounting points- I cut them too long and anchored the seat belts to the sides of the seat, the shoulder belts to the bulkhead behind the seat, all glued with thick super-glue. The shiny metal bar the shoulder belts go over was added, using styrene rod and little scraps for the brackets. I painted it "bright silver" using Polly Scale water-based acrylic paint.

Once the paint and glue were dry, I 'draped' the belts as reference photos showed them, and marked where the buckles should be. I trimmed the lead foil to length using the same scissors I'd cut the strips with. The buckles, tabs, adjusters, were all made from rectangular styrene & rod, glued with superglue to the lead, or with non-toxic Testor's liquid glue of plastic to plastic. The real belts had a leather pad that protected the wearer from the buckle mechanism, spreading out stresses, and I added this with a square of lead foil- the redish brown bit at the end.

A neat thing about lead foil is that you can bend the belts, etc, up and away from the seat while constructing and painting them. Once they're completed, you push them back into 'drape' positions using the rounded back ends of paint brushes, and tweezers. No glue is needed to hold the belts in place

I took a bunch of pictures as I was working but they were uniformly out of focus, except for the last bit. A lesson learned.

Garnet and Cream - a sophisticated and authentically styled mid-1800s gown with silk belt and slippers, for Addy, or the upcoming Cecile and Marie-Grace. I've chosen a red and cream color combination, commonly seen in the period. The dress is made from premium cream colored cotton sateen, this is a lovely feeling fabric, very drape-able, and the diagonal weave of the fabric gives it a soft sheen. This gown features four teardrop shaped tabs, sometimes called flaps. There are four of these tabs, each lined, surrounded by deep red cluny lace, and 4 buttons sewn onto each. Garnet colored pure silk was used for the detachable Swiss belt and cuffs. The fully lined bodice has cluny lace encircling the lowered neckline. The skirt is very full for the proper silhouette, and the hem is calf length, a good girl's dress length. Interior seams are serged for tidiness and strength. The dress and belt close in the back with small buttons and handworked button loops. The hem is hand stitched so as to be almost invisible. Interior seams are serged for strength and durability.

To complete the gown, I made slippers from the garnet silk. Girls did not always wear boots in this time period, they also wore flat shoes, called slippers. These custom made slippers are decorated with cream colored bows and a bead.

ALUMINUM ROLLER SHUTTERS. ROLLER SHUTTERS

ALUMINUM ROLLER SHUTTERS. BOOKA SHADE MEMENTO. VALANCE VERTICAL BLINDS.

Aluminum Roller Shutters

aluminum roller shutters

I made this image with a custom table I built inspired by some designs I'd seen in various places. Its basically a little platform w/ rollers on it, and a u-shaped piece of aluminum that acts to guide the wheels and the platform in a straight line as I pulled on a chain attached to the platform. To start the momentum in the water I give this chain a pull, and when the platform runs into a bump-stop at the end of the table, the water goes flying. I have a flash firing behind the background (a piece of translucent foamcore-ish material). The flash is wirelessly controlled by radio slaves, and the camera is fired by hand and eye coordination. With some practice, I was able to get the actions down to where when the platform hits the bump stops, I would release the shutter via the release cable, which would then in turn fire the flash... and thus we have the image in front of us. I haven't used any sound or photogate triggers as of yet, but I'm interested in trying some out if any one has any tips. Next time I post one of these I shall also post a set-up shot if anyone is interested... so stay tuned.

Day 59: Foiled

Day 59: Foiled

Foiled
So I am tired and somewhat uninspired today...I knew this challenge was going to be a roller coaster ride when I started it. It seems uninspired days are directly tied to bad days at work...funny how that works. Anyway this was a bank shot that I conceptualized a while back but was just waiting for a bad day to click the shutter and take my easy out. I burnt some aluminum foil with a match which created the brown soot and me being me put my finger in it to try to make a good finger print.

Camera Data
I had my macro lens equipped and one flash set up off camera. Not too much of a challenge here other than keeping the camera level so the entire finger print was in focus. The camera data can be found below.

These windows were not very old, but the design was not fully watertight. This had allowed water to get between the original paint and the bare wood, causing rotten wood and paint blistering as well as algal growth. All the loose paint and algae was removed, rotten wood was dug out, all bare wood was treated with an algicide to kill any algae and fungal growth, soft wood was hardened with Ronseal wood hardener, pockets and dips were filled with Ronseal High Performance Two Part Wood Filler. All bare wood and filler was primed then undercoated and glossed with Dulux Trade Weathershield Exterior undercoat and high gloss.

The carbon insert provides chemical filtration, absorbing odors, discolorations and impurities. The BioMax insert expands biological capacity to encourage growth of friendly bacteria. Thanks to the attached base/backing/canopy, the filter is completely hidden from view but is easily accessible and easy to maintain by removing the top canopy. The Fluval Edge Aquarium is extremely versatile, perfect for any home or office. Its compact proportions make it a beautiful addition to any interior decor where space may be limited. In low-light areas the aquarium glows like a jewel, bringing light and life to dull or uninteresting walls.

Bay Window of the Friendly Societies House - Elizabeth Street, Melbourne

This beautiful bay window with Art Nouveau decoration is the Friendly Societies House at 55 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.

Built in 1901, the building was originally only two storeys high, but later had an additional three storeys added. The front is very ornate, featuring blue grey tiles on the walls and terracotta tile window surrounds. Perhpas its most impressive feature is the central bay window on the second storey, and the sets of tall arched windows that flank it on either side. Built in the Edwardian period in Art Nouveau style, it also features mannerist design as well.

The Friendly Societies House was designed by architect Nahum Barnet who also designed; Her Majesty's Theatre on Exhibition Street in 1886, The Paton Building on Elizabeth Street in 1905, The Auditorium on Collins Street in 1912 and Alston's Corner on the corner of Elizabeth and Swanston Streets in 1913 amongst other buildings across Melbourne's inner city and central business district.

Parthenon Acropolis Athens Greece

Parthenon Acropolis Athens Greece

Athena Partenos of Pheidias, interior reconnstruction.

PHEIDIAS (fl. c. 490-430 BC), Athenian sculptor, the artistic director of the construction of the Parthenon, who created its most important religious images and supervised and probably designed its overall sculptural decoration. It is said of Phidias that he alone had seen the exact image of the gods and that he revealed it to man. He established forever general conceptions of Zeus and Athena.

Little is known about Phidias' life. When Pericles rose to power in 449, he initiated a great building program in Athens and placed Phidias in charge of all artistic undertakings. Among works for which Phidias is famous are three monuments to Athena on the Athenian Acropolis (the Athena Promachos, the Lemnian Athena, and the colossal Athena Parthenos for the Parthenon) and the colossal seated Zeus for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia; none of these survives in the original.

The first of Phidias' monuments to Athena, the bronze Athena Promachos, was one of his earliest works. It was placed on the Athenian Acropolis in about 456. According to the preserved inscription, it measured about 30 feet (9 m) high. At the time, it was the largest statue yet erected in Athens.

The so-called Lemnian Athena was dedicated as an offering by Athenian colonists who were sent to Lemnos between 451 and 448. A head of Athena in Bologna and two statues of Athena in Dresden are thought to be copies, in marble, of Phidias' original work in bronze.

The colossal statue of the Athena Parthenos, which Phidias made for the Parthenon, was completed and dedicated in 438. The original work was made of gold and ivory and stood some 38 feet (12 m) high. The goddess stood erect, wearing a tunic, aegis, and helmet and holding a Nike (goddess of victory) in her extended right hand and a spear in her left. A decorated shield and a serpent were by her side. Several copies have been identified from this description; among them are the Varakion, a Roman copy of about AD 130 (now in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens), and a Hellenistic copy, from about 160 BC, made for the main hall of the royal library at Pergamum (now in the Staatliche Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin).

The ancient writers considered Phidias' Zeus, completed about 430, for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia to be his masterpiece; this colossal statue is now considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Zeus was seated on a throne, holding a Nike in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. His flesh was of ivory, his drapery of gold. The throneback rose above his head. Everything surrounding the figure, including the statues and paintings (by Panaenos), was richly decorated. The Olympian Zeus was about seven times life size (or 42 feet [13 m]) and occupied the full height of the temple.

Phidias' last years remain a mystery. Pericles' enemies accused Phidias of stealing gold from the statue of the Athena Parthenos in 432, but he was able to disprove the charge. They then accused him of impiety (for including portraits of Pericles and himself on the shield of Athena on the Athena Parthenos), and he was thrown into prison. Until recently, it was thought that Phidias died in prison shortly thereafter; now it is believed that he was exiled to Elis, where he worked on the Olympian Zeus. A "workroom," thought to be Phidias', has been found in Olympia. It contains a number of terra-cotta molds believed to have been used for the drapery of the Olympian Zeus.

Phidias and his assistants were also responsible for the marble sculptures that adorned the Parthenon. Most of these remains (the Elgin Marbles) are now in the British Museum. Several of these sculptures have been attributed to Phidias, but none with certainty.

From these works one can gain some idea of Phidias' style. Even when movement is represented in some of his reliefs, a monumental quality is imparted. Though the construction of the human body is perfectly understood, its rendering is restrained and harmonized. In other words, Phidias may be called the initiator of the idealistic, classical style that distinguishes Greek art in the later 5th and the 4th centuries.

My Drapery Workroom

JAN 14-Most people who do custom drapery work at home like I do have to use their garage to have enough space. I on the other hand have been confined to small spaces for so long that I've developed a skill at arranging things. I live in a 2 bedroom trailer house from 1978 which isn't a double wide. I've converted the livingroom into my shop. In front of the sewing machines I still made room for a couch , a chair and coffeee table for a sitting area. I built both work tables you see here. The big one is 5' x 10'. Under the smaller one are six-3 drawer storage cabinets.
I know I make drapes but my windows are bare!

235/365 - Touch - GTW*L*

The theme this week is 5 senses...and since my senses seem to be on overdrive because of the pregnancy, this should be pretty easy;).

Touch came to mind first since this little guy has definitely shown some cool reactions to being touched ( as much as he can). When I put my hands on my belly, like here, he rolls around from side to side...

We discovered the other night that when my husband puts his hand on my belly, the baby kicks - HARD! We even tested it...my hand, a gentle roll, my husband's hand, an energetic kick - over and over...

It is amazing that even this early, humans respond to touch so readily.

23 Weeks pregnant today.

Samsung UN55B8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV

Samsung UN55B8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV

To clarify I own this tv and am not just basing this review on time spent in a store browsing. This tv has been hard to come by and the only place I could find that had it in stock was my local Best Buy with a Magnolia section.

Design: Samsung is noted for their sleek design and this tv is no exception. Samsung says it has a charcoal touch of color but I really didn't notice any color in the bezel. It is black and goes to clear at the outer edge. It sits on a metal stand with a clear neck holding the tv. At the bottom middle of the tv below where it says Samsung is a blue light which can be turned off. I noticed the light flickers ever so slightly when a command is sent from the remote you are using. The tv is VERY slim. Only 1.6" at it's fattest point. This is amazing considering this tv is a fully backlit LED unit with local dimming. Truly amazing and a design that will have your friends jealous.

Picture Quality: This is the best looking LCD tv made today. I have viewed many other LCD tv's including the Sony XBR8 and the Samsung A950 from last year and this one is the best looking I have seen. From a picture quality perspective the XBR8 is closest but not quite up to par with the 8500. Realistically if you had either of these sets in your house they would look spectacular. The blacks on the 8500 are so dark it approaches the level of blacks in the best Plasma tv's. In a dark room I could not tell where the tv screen ended and the bezel began because the screen was so dark. The colors are superb and can be tweaked any number of ways to your liking. I prefer the "Natural" mode for everyday use and the "Movie" mode for watching blu-ray movies. The 240hz refresh is nice but the best thing is that you can independantly control Blue and Judder settings. Cranking up the 240hz tends to produce what some call the "soap opera" effect but this can easily be eliminated by tweaking. There is also a Game mode which I use when gaming on my PS3.

One interesting thing I found out was that the Movie mode using the Warm 2 setting is pretty much spot on from a calibration perspective right out of the box. I say that because I have a Spears & Munsil calibration blu-ray disc and when I ran the tv through the calibration process using Movie mode on Warm 2 I literally only had to tweak one setting by one or two points. I could see many people just flipping back and forth between Natural and Movie modes, depending on what they are watching, and not bothering to calibrate the tv as it looks great pretty much out of the box.

I also wanted to mention that standard def looks good on this tv. It doesn't look nearly as good as HD but it is totally acceptable in my opinion.

Sound: Having such a think profile I expected the sound to be horrible. Surprisingly it was quite acceptable. While I would recommend a surround sound system I never felt like the tv speakers were all that bad. My wife has never mentioned anything and I have never been watching a tv show and thought, "oh the sound stinks". I would say it's about average which is ok to me considering the tiny amount of space Samsung had to work with. While audio-philes may not like the tv speakers/sound I think a lot of people would be totally fine with it.

Viewing Angle: I sit about 9' to 10' away from the screen and have not noticed any real issues with the viewing angle. Of course no LED LCD will have a viewing angle as good as a plasma but unless you are sitting at an extreme angle you probably won't have to worry too much about this. I think this is more of a personal preference...sure the best picture is right in the center of the screen but I don't think sitting to the right or left a few feet makes the picture dramatically different. Maybe a video-phile would notice but my wife doesn't notice and has never said a thing.

Reflection: Be aware that this is NOT a matte screen, it is a reflective screen. If you have windows directly facing the tv then make sure you have curtains or blinds that can block out the light enough not to bother you. I don't think it's anymore reflective than other Samsung tv's but coming from a matte screen prior to this it was a big change for me.

Widgets: The tv comes with internet connectivity for Yahoo Widgets, You Tube, Twitter, USA Today Sports and several others. You can either buy a Samsung USB wireless stick to connect the tv wirelessly to your network or you can plug an ethernet cable directly into the back of your tv. I have an ethernet cable plugged directly into the back of it. First things first, the widgets do not load fast. I'm not sure why but even using a direct internet cable into the tv they still do not load fast. No idea why but they are slooow. Slow enough for me to be annoyed and not use them much. It's odd because when I went to the You Tube widget and looked up a video it played quickly and was smooth. Hopefully Samsung will have a software update to allow the widgets to lo

The wheels of progress and...CHANGE!

The wheels of progress and...CHANGE!

It is a strange thing if one stops for more than a few minutes to ponder reality, fate, chance, luck and circumstance.

I do not believe in "fate", so to speak but, I am really starting to believe that things, no matter how minute or grand, happen for a reason. There are just too many coincidences mixed with opportunities and potential that would not ordinarily be there if the past didn’t play out like it did.

The wheels of progress, change, TRUTH and JUSTICE have been set in motion in the Marshall Islands. I sacrificed myself for the betterment of a “system” that enables pure unadulterated corruption, criminal activity, a black-market, poverty and discrimination! Do you, an American tax payer, realize that you tax dollars are literally being spent on Marshallese traditional leaders who use your money in an unethical manner? Millions upon millions of your, OUR, dollars are wasted on a few fellow human beings who use scare tactics, so called “Birth Rights” and tradition to oppress an entire civilian population!

Marshallese Senator Mike Kabua and the entire Kabua clan have their pudgy, corrupt and evil claws so deep into U.S. Army Kwajalein Atoll (USAKA) and the Kwajalein Police Department (KPD) that I would be willing to bet certain officials within these so called “professional” organizations are being bought. Why else would a Queen who I tried to enforce official laws upon when she were breaking these laws allowed to freely enter and exit USAKA no questions asked without her belongings ever being searched and inspected?

I have available first hand witness testimony that countless Marshallese citizens have been forced to vote election after election for the same Kabua family or face expulsion form their homes and native islands - not to mention being jailed and or beaten by the Kabua owned Marshallese Police agencies! I have personally been witness to this so called, Senator Mike Kabua, being allowed to freely break USAKA policy, procedure and law by the leadership of the Kwajalein Police Department!

Last year I tried to stop Mr. Kabua from going through an USAKA controlled gate with over one thousand dollars in goods purchased from a Kwajalein Range Services owned store on base. USAKA law states that even these so called “leaders” are only allowed to bring through 200 dollars worth of USAKA retail goods off of USAKA in a certain time frame. But, like time and time again, when I fought back and tried to enforce these laws, policies and regulations, I was overridden by the leadership within the ranks of the Kwajalein Police Department. I was forced to, or face disciplinary action, to open the gate and let this Mike Kabua character through with about a thousand U.S. dollars of American Retail Goods through the gate! He in turn used these very goods to sponsor an election rally on the island of Enniburr, known as Santo by many Marshallese. Mr. Senator Mike Kabua (among other Marshallese “leaders”) is literally using USAKA and KPD official resources in an official Marshallese Government election year after year. USAKA and KPD are the enablers of corrupt and criminal Marshallese Government elections that are not fair and legally conducted. If this is not known as a “Conflict of Interest”, I don’t know what is!

At the same time though, KPD police officers are expected to take away candy from a child, milk, eggs and bread from poor parents, write them a ticket and possibly initiate a black-marketing case against them. I find it IRONIC that Marshallese Senator Mike Kabua supports USAKA laws, policies and regulations when it is enforced against his own people who are forced to buy from stores he owns at prices much higher than can be found and bought by Mr. Kabua himself on USAKA - yet he chooses a path down the road of unethical practices by abusing his people’s trust and dignity by relying on corrupt KPD and USAKA leadership to purchase goods at a much lower price than are in the very stores he controls that his people are forced to buy from and who are criminal prosecuted if they buy from USAKA and try to get the goods home.

One night I was on Ebeye on the eve of the latest Marshallese elections. I was with some Marshallese friends and I asked them who they voted for. Every single person there told me that they voted for Senator Mike Kabua because if they didn’t, they would face imprisonment by the Ebeye Chief of Police, Mr. John Kabua, a direct family member of Senator Mike Kabua. They went on to tell me that after they were released from jail they would be forced off of the Kabua’s “land”. This expulsion would mean they loose their job provided by USAKA. If they loose their job they do not have money to provide for their families. These poor Marshallese citizens are literally caught between a rock and hard place.

Part two will come tomorrow. In this second part I will explain why 99.9 percent of all Marshallese citizens have no hope of change and see it as futile to

Dripping Awning

For some reason, I always find myself returning to my picture and observing it. I really enjoy looking at the minute yet powerful drops of water coming from the awning. This was in St. Louis in May 2011 after we performed a Bengali play in Kansas City.

It was *pouring* yesterday afternoon. I got absolutely soaked walking home, though I did try to wait it out under an awning. No dice.

Winspear Opera House

Winspear Opera House

Shot from inside the atrium taken on the grand opening celebration back in October.

From the Winspear's website:

"Designed by Foster + Partners under Pritzker Prize-winning architect Norman Foster, the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House will be engineered specifically for performances of opera and musical theatre with its stages equipped for performances of ballet and other forms of dance.

A 21st century reinterpretation of the traditional "horseshoe" opera house, the Winspear Opera House's principal performance space, the Margaret McDermott Performance Hall, will seat 2,200 (with capacity up to 2,300) and will feature retractable screens, a spacious fly-tower and variable acoustics. The Winspear Opera House will also include the Nancy Hamon Education and Recital Hall, a space that can be used for smaller performances seating audiences up to 200, as well as classes, rehearsals, meetings and events.

The Winspear Opera House will provide state-of-the-art performance spaces for The Dallas Opera, Texas Ballet Theater, traveling Broadway productions, and numerous other performing arts organizations and touring productions that serve Dallas and the surrounding areas.

The opera house's principal entrance features the 60-foot Annette and Harold Simmons Signature Glass Facade that wraps three-quarters of the way around the building, creating a transparency between the opera house and the surrounding Performance Park. The transparent facade provides dramatic views of the Margaret McDermott Performance Hall, which will be clad in vibrant red glass panels. From within the Winspear Opera House, the Simmons Glass Facade provides a sweeping view of the skyscrapers of downtown Dallas that line the northern edge of the Performance Park.

To enhance the connection with the Park, an 84-foot wide section of the glass facade will be retractable to a height of 23 feet, literally opening up the Grand Lobby, Cafe and Box Circle-level restaurant to Sammons Park.

Radiating from the Winspear Opera House on all sides, the sky canopy will provide shade over three acres of the Sammons Park, creating new outdoor spaces for visitors to gather and relax. The glass solar canopy's louvers will be arranged at fixed angles following the path of the sun, calculated to provide optimal shade for the outdoor spaces throughout the day, as well as preventing direct sunlight from hitting the Simmons Glass Facade during the warmest months of summer.
