This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, and patios across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, and patios. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, and patios in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, and patios" for the year 2011. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

Karen LaMonte’s monumental sculptures in cast glass have received international attention. Her subject is the dress, which is always life-size, whether it is for an infant, a young girl, or a woman. She explores a variety of styles of clothing in her work, from stiff and frilly Victorian dresses to idealized classical drapery. Her fashion choices reflect changing notions of beauty, how women view themselves, and how they have been viewed by others.

Casting glass on such a large scale is extremely difficult. LaMonte worked her way up from small-scale castings to medium-range pieces. Wanting to increase the scale of her sculptures but limited by the facilities in New York City, she turned to the only place capable of meeting her technical requirements: the Czech Republic.

In recent years, LaMonte has worked in Zelezny Brod. She uses art students, friends, and herself as models for the interiors of her sculptures, of which this is one example. The process of moldmaking is complex, since separate castings and wax models are made of the bodies and the clothing. The final, hollow casting in glass articulates the interior and exterior forms.

I just HAD to build another Dippold before tomorrow, a panoramic one. Cut the relevant bits of the template in half and inserted the width of an extra frame. In anticipation of vignetting I enlarged the holes and as a result of that I had to change the shutter design as well, it's now a horizontally moving shutter. The inner light chamber had to be made out of thicker cardboard than the original one because the extra length made it more wobbly.

The wooden pinhole camera I was working on has now definitely been discontinued: I trimmed the base plate and made it into a tripod plate for the Dippolds.

River Reflections In The Winter

It's funny how sometimes photographs, like songs, can draw you back to an exact moment in time. I have been going through one of my external harddrives this morning. There are certain pictures that just bring me back to the exact moment when I shot them. I remember the smells, the energy in the air, the feeling of the landscape and even the exact thought process that was going through my head at the time the pictures were taken.

The story behind this picture is pretty rememberable for me. Though the photograph isn't the best, it's the memory of it that I like so much.

It was the end of winter, the lakes and the rivers were beginning to thaw out. I had horrible cabin fever that year. I woke up one morning, and had an urge to leave. I had too. I spoke with my husband and told him we were going on a road trip. He asked me "Where are we heading too?" And of course, I didn't know where I wanted to go, so I just told him that we would let the road guide us. So he agreed and we jumped in the car.

I remember getting onto the highway and just driving.....not knowing where we'd end up was the best part of it. Whenever I felt the urge to make a turn I would. We traveled north west....heading to parts of Wisconsin that we'd never seen or heard much about before. There wasn't anything overly remarkable as for landscapes.... no rolling mountains of course, this is the midwest, no canyons, not much more than trees and barns and rivers and lakes. That's basically what the more rural parts of Wisconsin consists of. And I was not hoping for much more.. I just knew that we would end up wherever we needed to be.

I remember making a weird turn down a dirt road. I must have been following some sign that said something interesting, but what it said or the names of the places escape me right now. My husband, who never really 100% trusts me driving around with no map, was kind of nervous and kept telling me to go back and find the highway. But of course, I was in the driver's seat....and I didn't feel like turning around so I just followed a series of winding dirt roads to only God knows where. I made another turn, and was brought to this little remote country neighborhood. There was a river flowing beside it and I parked on the side of the road to go see if there was anything interesting by the river to photograph. There was a small wooden foot bridge that connected walkers to the other side of the river. I wasn't too impressed by it though. A bridge is a bridge ya know?

So as I'm walking down the snowy bank of the river, it starts to rain..... I love the rain. The fresh smell in the air, the energy that's always present as the drops start to fall...pretty much everything about rain I love. So I was happy. It was kind of chilly outside...and the rain was cold... most people would have probably walked back to their car but I was enjoying it so I kept walking. I watched the patterns that the drops were making in the river water. It was beautiful....almost hypnotic. I sat there for a while and just watched the droplets dance in the waves that they fell into. So I took out my camera and took a couple of pictures.... I know most people would have drug out the shutter and smoothed out the water but that's not what I wanted to capture here. I wanted to capture the beautiful mess that the droplets were making of the reflections. So that's what I did. I got the pictures that I wanted, and I was happy.... so I headed back to my car, told my husband that I found what I was looking for, and we headed home.

It wasn't the best road trip that we've ever had, not even close..... but it was still inspiring.... letting the road lead you to wherever it wants. Not knowing where you'll end up or what you'll find. And when you finally find what you think you're looking for, sometimes its just as simple as a messy reflection in the water.

I had this urge to get a long lens for my 4x5 wooden field view camera. Well; boys need their toys. So for a while I looked at a Nikkor-M 300-f9 nice, popular and pricey. Well; my toys are only reasonably priced :-) :-).
And then I came across a Symmar convertible 180/315mm on a sale for much, much less than ? the price of the Nikkor, I could not give that-up, so I purchase it without thinking much about it.
This is not an horror story; when the lens came, it was perfect and Schneider do make good stuff. However, some thinking on how to use it was due, since neither the field 4x5 or the CG. had the bellow extension needed for a proper use of a 315mm focal length.
Other challenges had to be considered too:
1. Even with the front element removed the lens was heavy for a wooden frame, sagging and wobbling are not good attributes after all.
The CG. provided the rigidity and most of the movements that I could possibly do with a long photo lens
2. With the front element removed the shutter is exposed, with my thumbs dexterity it was imperative to find a good solution. I decided to find a UV-Haze filter that would fit the inside threat of the Synchro-Compur shutter, that turned out to be not possible . I had to settle for a filter that fits snug in the cavity glued with a drop of Locktite. I do have other lens for the 150mm range.
3. Unable to change the bellow length, the only alternative was to extend the lens board.
Of course if I had a machine shop it would be easier, but I had to do with what I could make in my basement hand held wood working tools. I finished with a design of a square extended tube 75 mm long made with 6mm thick plywood fixed at one end to an existing CG. lens board; the other end it holds the rear element and the shutter assembly. It is rigid, and light; well suited to the CG frame.
4. I missed a proper focusing scale on the CG, so I made a suitable one glued to the rail
I tested the affair on my last trip, not that many shots but…. I am happy with it, pictures of the camera to follow :-)

I picked this vintage granny skirt up from the market for 50 pence cause I fell in love with the colours of the rather fabulous boucle fabric & I also thought that I might be able to make a cape out of it.

I was draping it over my dressmakers dummy today but it just didn’t look right as a cape, it just didn’t hang right, I was just about to give up when a thought came to me…I could make a very simple dress out of this with minimum effort!

So out came the seam unpicker, I made two armholes by removing the zipper on one side & unpicking the seam of the other side & then simply handstitching around the edges to make them look neat…voila, reconstructed granny skirt becomes a sweet boatneck DIY mini dress!

You can usually find these type skirts in abundance at the charity shops for next to nothing, this one is by Gor-ray…it had zipper & button fastening one side & it has kick-pleats both to the front & back.

Partial Lunar Eclipse

View from Cebu, Philippines of the partial lunar eclipse which took place at sunset on June 26th 2010.
Some partial shading can be seen on the lower left side of the moon as the earths shadow moved across it. The moon also took on a reddish tinge.
Unfortunately, the moon moved behind some clouds a couple of minutes after I took this shot preventing a better view of the peak of the partial eclipse.

Widespread concern about the sustainability of clearcut regeneration systems has led to the increased use of partial retention systems in British Columbia. In particular, uncertainty surrounds the relative performance of tree species of different shade tolerance, prompting increasing interest in seedling response to a range of light environments. Even more uncertainty surrounds our understanding of the development of trees in partially cut stands infected with the root diseases, Armillaria ostoyae (Romagnesi) and Inontus tomentosus (Fr.Fr) S. Teng. We compared light retention (25% of the original basal area), heavy retention (50% of the original basal area) and clearcut treatments at two sites. A root removal technique (pushover falling) was used for root disease mitigation. Light levels were measured using hemispherical photography. Growth rate increased as the level of canopy openness increased, but did not vary among species differing in shade tolerance. The root removal treatment, by contrast, had no effect on seedling survival after 5 years. Development and expression of the root diseases over the longer term may alter these results. Our findings demonstrate that a variety of partial retention systems can be used to regenerate mixed species forests in the Interior Cedar Hemlock zone.

In 1992 Sultan Qaboos directed that his country of Oman should have a Grand Mosque. A competition for its design took place in 1993 and after a site was chosen at Bausher construction commenced in 1995. Building work, which was undertaken by Carillion Alawi LLC took six years and four months.

The Mosque is built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone. The main musalla (prayer hall) is square (external dimensions 74.4 x 74.4 metres) with a central dome rising to a height of fifty metres above the floor. The dome and the main minaret (90 metres) and four flanking minarets (45.5 metres) are the mosque’s chief visual features. The main musalla can hold over 6,500 worshippers, while the women’s musalla can accommodate 750 worshippers. The outer paved ground can hold 8,000 worshippers and there is additional space available in the interior courtyard and the passageways, making a total capacity of up to 20,000 worshippers.

A major feature of the design of the interior is the prayer carpet which covers the floor of the prayer hall. It contains, 1,700,000 knots, weighs 21 tonnes and took four years to produce, and brings together the classical Tabriz, Kashan and Isfahan design traditions. 28 colors in varying shades were used, the majority obtained from traditional vegetable dyes. It is the largest single piece carpet in the world. The world's largest hand-woven carpet was produced by Iran Carpet Company (ICC) at the order of the Diwan of the Royal Court of Sultanate of Oman to cover the entire floor of the main praying hall of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (SQGM) in Muscat. The carpet measures over 70 ? 60 meters, and covers the 4,343 square meter area of the praying hall, all in a single piece. The chandelier above the praying hall is 14 meters tall. The Mosque is built on a site occupying 416,000 square metres and the complex extends to cover an area of 40,000 square metres. The newly built Grand Mosque was inaugurated by Sultan of Oman on May 4, 2001.

The Company's Garden was laid out by Cape Town's founding father Jan van Riebeeck on order of the Dutch-East India Trading Company to secure the provisioning of the colonists with vegetables. Today the Company's Garden is a large public park and botanical garden. Particularly in summer, when the heat is trapped in the streets of the city, a stroll through the lush gardens is really refreshing.

The South African Museum with Planetarium, the National Gallery, the Jewish Mueum and the Parliament, where South Africa's politicians meet during the summer months. Cape Town and Pretoria share the role of national capitals. At the bottom end of the park stands the Anglican St. Georges Cathedral and next to it, the South African Library. Company's Garden has a coffeeshop/restaurant in the shade of big exotic trees. Often on weekends, open-air concerts - jazz or African music - are held here.

This was my first attempt at doing a beauty shot after watching the video on kelby training. Obviously, it is far from what he did. My post processing skills are pretty low on the talent pole, so it's more about learning the "light", which was fun to do.

The equipment used was pretty much all DIY. The back ground is not even a softbox. I just used my pvc frame that I had built a long time ago to use as a light panel, tilted it back a bit and threw a Sunpak behind it. For the key light, DIY beauty dish with the "human" mobile boom :) The reflector was a $7 car windshield sun shade from Costco.

Taken during one of my walks... Looking for shade from the hot sun.I was attracted to this club car at the Golf Course at Hermann Park..I decided to do it in B/W(P/B) ,because I really need more experience in Black and White photography. Via wired remote control start the camera to take a pictures from the leds and the LCD display.
Leds show the shutterlag and openings time.

Works also to know how long the focus adjust time is for all lenses.
