Brass Bass Pegs
The old girl, Acquired in 1965 by my father from the bass player at the Glasgow Empire, she is dated from around 1870 and appears to be German in construction. Very unusually the pegs are solid brass so on her side, she will sit with her head stock on the ground because of the weight. Originally she would have been almost black in colour and has had some major body repairs in her time. The back needs reglueing at least once a year at the bottom and the bottom on the solid metal spike is long gone, but I am loathed to put in a new unit
Cork plugs for stuffing the transom centre-stiffener holes
K&S brass tubing sharpened with the 45 degree hand-countersinking tool. The plugs were poked into the holes using the same bamboo kebab skewer that I used to poke the plugs out of the brass tube cutter; the plugs were then trimmed flush with the timber using the single-edged razor blade next to the sandpaper in the photo. An old wine-bottle cork (saved for musical instrument repairs) supplied the cork...

The "NVIDIA X Server Settings" window maximized over 4 screens - its configuration both sets up the layout of the monitors, and in this case, mirrors the actual physical setup of the monitors over which it is stretched.
The top 3 are seen by my Nvidia 8800 GTS's first DVI port as a single, very wide monitor, thanks to the Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Edition, and the bottom screen is placed 'absolutely' under them through the settings window seen on them, in which I've selected a "TwinView" configuration.
Of course, I could get another Matrox TH2G, and have a total of 6 monitors seen by the 2 DVI ports as 2 very wide displays, but that would just be crazy :) This is just a temp setup while testing the new screen. It'll be going over the piano elsewhere in the room, spending its time helping me train through musical training software (flash card style), record/playback music through the excellent free/open Rosegarden, as well digitally displaying lots of sheet music downloaded from the 'net.

The Swanee sax
The Swanee Sax, a saxophone with a slide but no keys, was patented in 1927 by Samuel Bowley Barnes. Barnes came to London in the 1900s and opened a musical instrument shop in Rathbone Place with his partner Albert Mullins. Mullins drowned on the Empress of Ireland which sank in 1914. The Swanee Sax has a saxophone mouthpiece and a conical bore with a slide along its length. The instrument was marketed for its ease of use: "No keys to manipulate - No buttons to press - Nothing to go wrong. Played by a simple movement. Can be played from music or by ear". However, playing the Swanee Sax in tune was difficult, so the advantages listed here were not enough for it to compete with the conventional saxophone.
5/30 From a high angle
My clarinet. Twelve years ago, I used to be pretty good at playing the clarinet. Now I can just about squeak my way through Swan Lake. :-/ I really should practice it more, as one day I'd like to learn the saxophone and I've read that if you can play clarinet well, then learning the sax is a doddle.
