ARKIE ('Arkansas Woodchopper') (1906-1981)
ARKIE ('Arkansas Woodchopper') (1906-1981):
The Arkansas Woodchopper or as he was called "Arkie" was one of the mainstays of WLS' National Barn Dance show. He was a native of the Ozark mountains, near Knobnoster, Missouri and was said to have actually chopped wood. He also worked on his father's farm and at a general store in town and was later a gas station attendant.
The story goes that he used to trap. So, once after selling some skins one day, bought a watch. At the time, he was already calling square dances at parties, but had an itch to play the fiddle at the dances, too. He pawned the watch, bought a fiddle and learned to play. Jos first job—was playing the guitar and fiddle at at square dance, for $4.00, for SIX hours!
Later, when performing, it was usually with his guitar. When he did play the fiddle, it wasn't from the shoulder position, but from the hip, using a sort of cross-cut saw action.
Arkie's singing and radio career started in Kansas City. During the war years they said he had a good reputation as a weather prophet, but that it couldn't be talked about, for military reasons. He was said to be just like some of the fruit cake they made down in the hills: the older it got, the better it was.
The National Barn Dance made appearances regularly at the Illinois and Indiana State Fairs. In 1932, they wrote that they came in at five o'clock in the morning to watch as well as listen to the show.
In the WLS Family Album of 1938, they noted that Arkie was chosen by vote of the listeners as one of the three most popular acts on WLS.
Arkie evidently enjoyed to laugh. Early on they said that "...some of the boys found it was a lot of fun to make him laugh in the middle of a song, inventing the most outlandish stunts to accomplish this. Since then, Arkie's laugh has been heard from coast to coast."
And they say he never knew what to expect. In another issue, they wrote that no one had ever gone through what he had to go through while performing. Manhandled. Wrapped in bandages. Sheet music set afire. Guitar pulled out of tune. Shoes unlaced. And he laughed and sang right through it all.
Day 1023 - Day 293
Lifetime Dream # 93 of my list of 155: I will learn to play the song Presto by Rush. As the song that first attracted me to their music in such a large way, it also led me to a song that saved my life and opened my eyes to the beauty that music provides.
This song has 8 different key changes, 36 different chord structures, and time changes all through the music. The lyrics paint such a vivid and wonderful image in the mind, and years after hearing this song- I am still captivated by the music. I still remember where I was when I first heard this song, and I was so inspired that I went out and bought the album. It was another song on this album that really helped me through a very dark time in my young adult life.
This song opened many doors in my life. To music- to what it can do for the mind, the heart, the emotions, and the paths of the soul. It is my pleasure to learn to play this song!
Pictured here is the sheet music, and a TASCAM Track-slower for difficult songs and parts. It’s an incredible tool!

After a weekend of playing Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, the finalists at NTDTV's 3rd Chinese International Violin Competition wrapped up the contest with Paganini's Caprices--among the most technically demanding works written for the violin.
In addition, the competition required a piece unlike any other used before for competitions: "Dedu" ("Be Saved") Theme and Variations, a Chinese-influenced piece specially commissioned for the occasion.
Combining highly challenging techniques of the violin with elements of Chinese musical expression, "Dedu" gave contestants an opportunity to walk away with more than just a prize--they also gained a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
The winners of the Chinese International Violin Competition bronze, silver, and gold prizes: Arianna Warsaw-Fan, Jing Zhang, and Corin Lee. The bronze winner receives $1,000, the silver $3,000, and the gold wins a handmade violin and $5,000.
'Dedu'
The composer of the score, Ms. Ching-ya Mahlen, watched the final round of the competition on Sunday, Oct. 31. She expressed her thoughts upon hearing the contestants perform her work on stage.
"I was really, really touched. There's a story behind 'Dedu.' It's about the Falun Gong practitioners who were persecuted for their beliefs in China, who elevated spiritually through practicing Falun Gong, and who stood up for their beliefs courageously. This story is connected to the music. I composed this piece for NTDTV's competition, in order to introduce this music, and let more people know the story [behind it]."
The composer of "Dedu", Ching-ya Mahlen
She was moved by the amount of thought and hard work the contestants put into performing the piece and especially appreciated the diversity of their interpretations.
"Because each performer has different backgrounds and experiences in life, through playing with their hearts, they gave the audience different messages," Mahlen said. "While I was listening, I felt like they were telling their own stories."
Chen Rutang, a judge on the panel at the competition, expressed his understanding of Mahlen's music: "'Dedu' is a manifestation of the culture of personal cultivation in China. In traditional Chinese culture, cultivation is very important. ... In my understanding, 'Dedu' incorporates the culture of cultivation in the music."
Same Score, Very Different Ways of Playing
Corin Lee, from The Juilliard School, played "Dedu" with a quiet and poignant sensibility that at times reminded one of the erhu, a traditional Chinese two-stringed instrument. His vibrato added to the sense of sadness in the music.
Xuan Du from Lisbon, Portugal, opted for a more expressive rendition that included fierce, rapid-fire bowing and majestic notes that filled up the entire auditorium.
Meanwhile, Jing Zhang's (New England Conservatory of Music) lyrical high notes tugged at one's heartstrings, and Arianna Warsaw-Fan (The Juilliard School) played with phenomenal technique reminiscent of virtuoso players. Her confident and assured playing brought out the singing quality in the timbre of the violin.
And the Winner Is ...
In the end, it was Lee's unembellished playing that earned him the gold prize. Chia-Chi Lin, one of the judges on the panel, explained: "[In] other competitions, they are looking for mostly virtuoso players ... But I think what's different with our competition is that we are looking for a special kind of character, and it's beauty, and sincere [sic], and honesty. And I think Corin Lee has that quality in him. ... He has that honesty--he plays the way he feels, and comfortably too."
Judge Chen Rutang said: "Everyone can see some very elaborate techniques, such as the chords, as well as the constant transition between high and low notes. They were able to incorporate these techniques into the music, so they were not just displaying technique, but performing music ... they melted into the music, [and] the inner meaning [of the music]. I think this is very precious and also very important. Otherwise, you're just showing off technique."
Corin Lee won the gold prize and handmade violin.
Jin Zhang, winner of silver prize.
Arianna Warsaw-Fan, winner of bronze prize
Preparation
For Lee, he first approached "Dedu" with "the style, the different characters and what the composer was trying to portray" in mind.
Warsaw-Fan listened to some traditional Chinese music "to get a feel for what that's like." For her, "Dedu" was an extremely unique composition. In addition to a beautiful melody, she observed: "The composer took a lot of techniques from Western music that I played a lot more of, so you can see her paying homage to certain other composers."
Warsaw-Fan noted that the virtuosic opening reminded her of Pablo de Sarasate, a Romantic violini

YOU WOULDNT DARE TO SWITCH OFF THE VOID
void can be seen in connection with the following:
Aether as a classical element, being the source of all other worldly elements, this means the quintessence of all.
Aether in the mythology, as the firmament of the sky or heavens above.
The total absence of matter.
In astronomy, its a very large region of space with few or no galaxies contained therein.
Nothing, Null, Nil, Zip, Nada, das Nichts, Niente.
In Buddhism as Shunyata, meaning the Emptiness.
In Discordianism, Void is the parent of Eris (the goddess of disorder and strife) and Aneris (the goddess of order and non-existing things).
To urinate, taking a leak.
Often the title of the fifth Scroll in "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi. (better translations are "Nothingness" or "Emptiness"). Musashi defines Void as "the realm where nothing exists, or cannot be known," and notes that "wrongly viewed among people of the world, not understanding anything is itself considered void. This is not real void: it is all a delusion."
VOID as a band from Washington, D.C.it was a legendary outfit in one of the important days and times of hardcore as a musical approach and lifestyle. probably one of the most non-conformist and radical (musically) of their time. information about the band is very sparsely but nevertheless quite mythologically. the reputation they made consisted of an over-the-top behaviour of singer john weiffenbach, the highly chaotic, swirling and dizzying guitar lines played by bubba dupree, an eccentric, often drunken performance of the same man and lots of unwanted violence at their shows. in contrast to the most players of other DC hardcore bands from that period, i couldnt detect any musical groups containing a former VOID member. obviously they decided to keep on doing their own thing, rather than being part of any scene. musically they are hard to grasp. punk is not even coming close as the music is way to wild and fierce. hardcore had not experienced a tornado-style group of that level and metal, well come on this was 1982! even slayer is kinda tame in comparison and way too technical and structured. VOID was a pure rush of adrenaline, a frenzy, with jet streamed guitars and full-throttle drumming. the impact they made was huge in my opinion. other ultra-core bands came soon after but not one was as unnerving and maniacly as VOID! they are best known for their split LP with fellow washington DC band FAITH, which came out on the DISCHORD label. i think it is still in print! the sad thing is they are rumored to have recordes a full length LP in 1984 called "the potion for dreams" that should have been issued on touch&go records but did never come out. any information about this seminal combo would be highly appreaciated!
These things are just compulsive.

10. What concert or musical event do you wish you could have attended? Or a performer you would have loved to have seen live? - 1950's Elvis. Then kidnapped him and made him my singing love slave.
11. You and your sweetie, what's your 'song'? If you aren't paired off, what song do you think it might be? - Oh crap. They are so going to be different. 'Angel Mine' by Cowboy Junkies makes me think of us. But then we've been together nearly 15 years, so lots does.
12. What song gets stuck in your head the most? (For good or for bad...) - Seven Days by Sting. I know not why. I hate that song.

Série com o Cisne-Negro (Cygnus atratus) - Series with the Black Swan - 13-03-2010 - IMG 9543
A Text, in english, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Black Swan, photographed in Brasilia's Zoo, Brazil.
The Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia.
Taxonomy:
Black swans were first seen by Europeans in 1697, when Willem de Vlamingh's expedition explored the Swan River, Western Australia.
The black swan was described scientifically by English naturalist John Latham in 1790. It was formerly placed into a monotypic genus, Chenopis.
The common name ‘Swan’ is a gender neutral term, but ‘cob’ for a male and ‘pen’ for a female are also used, as is ‘cygnet’ for the young. Collective nouns include a ‘bank’ (on the ground) and a ‘wedge’ (in flight). Black Swans can be found singly, or in loose companies numbering into the hundreds or even thousands.
Description:
Black Swans are primarily black feathered birds, with white flight feathers. The bill is bright red, with a pale bar and tip; and legs and feet are greyish-black. Cobs (males) are slightly larger than pens (females), with a longer and straighter bill. Cygnets (immature birds) are a greyish-brown with pale-edged feathers.
A mature Black Swan measures between 110 and 142 cm (43-56 in) in length and weighs 3.7–9 kg (8.1-20 lbs). Its wing span is between 1.6 and 2 metres (5.3-6.5 ft). The neck is long (relatively the longest neck among the swans) and curved in an "S".
The Black Swan utters a musical and far reaching bugle-like sound, called either on the water or in flight, as well as a range of softer crooning notes. It can also whistle, especially when disturbed while breeding and nesting.
The Black Swan is unlike any other Australian bird, although in poor light and at long range it may be confused with a Magpie Goose in flight. However, the black swan can be distinguished by its much longer neck and slower wing beat.
Distribution:
The species has a large range, with figures between one to ten million km? given as the extent of occurrence. The current global population is estimated to be up to 500,000 individuals. No threat of extinction, or significant decline in population has been identified with this numerous and widespread bird.
The Black Swan is common in the wetlands of south western and eastern Australia and adjacent coastal islands. In the south west the range ecompasses an area between North West Cape, Cape Leeuwin and Eucla; while in the east it covers are large region bounded by the Atherton Tableland, the Eyre Peninsula and Tasmania, with the Murray Darling Basin supporting very large populations of black swans. It is uncommon in central and northern Australia.
The Black Swan’s preferred habitat extends across fresh, brackish and salt water lakes, swamps and rivers with underwater and emergent vegetation for food and nesting materials. Permanent wetlands are preferred, including ornamental lakes, but black swans can also be found in flooded pastures and tidal mudflats, and occasionally on the open sea near islands or the shore.
Black Swans were once thought to be sedentary, but the species is now known to be highly nomadic. There is no set migratory pattern, but rather opportunistic responses to either rainfall or drought. In high rainfall years, emigration occurs from the south west and south east into the interior, with a reverse immigration to these heartlands in drier years. When rain does fall in the arid central regions, black swans will migrate to these areas to nest and raise their young. However, should dry conditions return before the young have been raised, the adult birds will abandon the nests and their eggs or cygnets and return to wetter areas.
Black Swans, like many other water fowl, lose all their flight feathers at once when they moult after breeding, and they are unable to fly for about a month. During this time they will usually settle on large, open waters for safety.
Introduced populations
Before the arrival of the Maori in New Zealand, a sub-species of the Black Swan known as the New Zealand Swan had developed in the islands, but was apparently hunted to extinction. In 1864, the Australian Black Swan was introduced to New Zealand as an ornamental waterfowl, and populations are now common on larger coastal or inland lakes, especially Rotorua Lakes, Lake Wairarapa and Lake Ellesmere, and the Chatham Islands.[6] Black Swans have also naturally flown to New Zealand, leading some people to consider them a native rather than exotic species, although the present population appears to be largely descended from deliberate introductions.
The Black Swan is also very popular as an ornamental waterbird in Western Europe, especially Britain, and escapes are commonly reported. As yet the population in Britain is not considered to be self-sustaining and so the species is not afforded admission to the official British List, but the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust have recorded a maximum of nine breeding pairs in the UK in 2001, with an estimate of
Palace of the Governors
The Palace of the Governors is the oldest public bulding in continuous use in the United States. Built in 1610 by the Spanish, the Palace was site of a gruesome murder of the Spanish governor during the 1680 Pueblo rebellion. During the interregnum, the Natives also used the Palace as a government building. After Spanish rule was resotred, the governors of New Mexico occupied the Palace as their residence until 1909 when a new governors mansion was constructed. Since then the Palace has been used as a museum for the state.

Thank You Tianzin Luthiers
What a wonderful distraction this instrument has been the past few days - and will be for years. On a whim, a $25 (US) purchase on e-Bay has yielded an incredible instrument for the money. Thanks to the instrument crafters in Tianzin China. Your work is appreciated.
(Of course, the tone is not a good as on better instruments, but it's fine for beginners and surprisingly resonant.)
