BORIS KARLOFF. (November 23, 1889—February 2, 1969)

BORIS KARLOFF. (November 23, 1889—February 2, 1969)

The original 1931 Frankenstein made Boris Karloff a monstrous star overnight. Karloff went on to reprise the role in 1935 in The Bride of Frankenstein and bowed out playing the monster in 1939’s The son of Frankenstein. In these monster franchises, it was Bride that surpassed them all.

The Bride of Frankenstein was released to great critical acclaim, surpassing its original both financially and artistically. The film’s reputation has grown and it is hailed as director James Whale’s masterpiece. The move’s enormous popularity is also noted for its subversive material that was smled in, eluding the 1935 censors: there are hints of homosexuality, necrophilia and sacrilege.

Of course, Boris Karloff turns in a stellar performance as the friendless monster, which also contributes to the film’s success. With fumbling hands outreached, seeking understanding and friendship, Karloff brought pathos to the part.

“To a new world of gods and monsters!” croons Dr. Praetorious to Dr. Henry Frankenstein after proposing a Faustian partnership to create a mate for the monster. “Alone,” Praetorious says,” you have created a man. Now, together, we shall create his mate.”

The Frankenstein monster had always wanted a friend. In the original movie, he had stumbled upon a little girl who was idly tossing flowers in the lake. In the quest to befriend the girl, he mistakenly tosses her in the lake drowning her. In Bride, the monster is lulled by the sounds of a violin playing ‘Ave Maria’ and encounters an old blind man who is also desperately lonely. The blind man teaches the dumb brute simple English skills, words such as “friend” and “good.” Unhappily, two lost hunters come across the cottage and recognize the monster. Forever the outsider, the monster is driven from his domestic bless by the gun-totting rubes that accidentally burn down the cottage as the hunters lead the hermit to safety.

The monster returns to a life of haunted loneliness until he discovers that Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Praetorious, in their unholy alliance, have created a female mate for the monster. “She’s alive! She’s alive!” Dr. Frankenstein cries. The excited monster sees his mate, and reaches out to her. “Friend?” he asks, perhaps recalling the hermit. The Bride, recoiling in horror, rejects him. “She hates me! Like others,” the monster mutters miserably. The monster rampages and yells out to Dr. Frankenstein and his bride, Elizabeth, who has now rushed to the scene. “Go! You live!” To Pretorious and the jilting bride, he says “You stay. We belong dead.”

Happy Bench Monday!!!

The quest for perfection is a funny thing. You can play the same score over and over again, and in practicing to correct just one mistake, you end up with ten mistakes in ten different places after playing the same piece ten times. So much for “practice makes perfect”.

Or it could be that it’s just not my gifting.

I’ve played the piano since age four, and I took the ABRSM exams, got to Grade Six, and quit when I was 16. I didn’t see the sense in working on only three pieces and the numerous scales to death in one year, or less, just to do average in the exams. Although I love playing the chromatic scales really, really, really fast!!!

Other than that, I do better playing by ear and following simple chords.

Conn-Selmer

Conn-Selmer

In 1927 George Bundy came to Elkhart due to the reputation of its being the "Band Instrument City of the World". He purchased the property at 1119 N. Main Street. Due to the small size they only occupied the 2nd floor of the building. It had originally been the show rooms for the Crowe Automobile factory, across the street, and housed the sales rooms for the Hudson Motor Car Agency at the time of purchase. This caused one of the competitors in the band instrument industry to call Selmer "the little place over the garage".

In October 2003 Conn-Selmer announced that it would be closing it's N. Main Street manufacturing operations in Elkhart, Indiana. This plant's production will be transferred to other company-owned facilities.

All I can currently think about is what an epic fort I could make out of all those boxes!

"it's not even the real cannonball" they said. nonetheless, e-town and roadside america attracted us to this site.

Bow Work Station

Bow Work Station

Please view large.

I love work benches and their assorted tools and paraphernalia. Unless it's an automotive work bench or very basic carpentry tools I don't usually understand what I'm looking at. But I still like them. They make me think of artisans and people who really know a highly technical skill with their hands.

This is the work bench where all the bow repair and re-hairing goes on at Tulsa Violin Shop. I didn't know the purpose of even an 1/8th of the tools shown here. The bow master was not there the day I was shooting, but I liked how the lamp appeared to be examining the bow himself.

Did you know that bows are made from horses' tails?

Purfling tools

Purfling tools

I'm just not good enough yet with hand tools to do the job on the tailpiece.
Using both blades cuts a channel .030 too wide for purf.
Using a single blade and adjusting it
for a second pass too unreliable.
Hmm dremel with a fine bit and an
inventive plunger/ guide? Risky.
Fake it. Apply a sealer, mask with painters tape use the hand tool to score the tape and shoot it with spray paint and live to fight it another day.
It might have been easier to cut the channel while the tailpiece was still part of a big block of wood.

Dominant Bus gets the Maltese treatment.

Customised in the way only the Maltese seem to be able to do is this Dominant Bus bodied Ford R1014. Much better to tell intending passengers what lies beneath the bonnet, rather than where the bus is going! I plucked this shot out to go with a comment made by 'preselected' on my posting of the Bedford Dominant bus a few pictures ago. EBY 595 at the time of this shot in 2003 appears to be Leyland powered ... as was the vast majority of the island's 'fleet' at the time. The Leyland 400 series and it's derivatives had become the engine of choice as supplies of AEC 505s began to dry up.

Dominant Bus - interior.

Looking towards the front... as if to state the obvious. The stainless steel 'stubbers' on the seat backs are a throwback to a bygone age when smoking was deemed acceptable in a bus. The clean functional lines, and airy spacious feel even with full length lage racks is notable. Traditional Treadmaster flooring covers the entire gangway and seating is provided in adequate comfort for 53 within an 11m body. It is authentically preserved as it's sliding windows rattle incessantly, something which affected almost all Dominant Buses.

Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy Gillespie, 21 Oct 1917 - 6 Jan 1993, by Marc Klionsky, Oil on canvas, 1988.

In the early 1940s, the young jazz trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie began meeting with several other musicians, including Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, at a New York nightclub to explore a new form of musical expression. Out of these sessions came the infectious energy of bebop, with Gillespie as one of its pioneers and eventually its elder statesman. Aimed at evolving jazz out of its earlier swing mode, the new music initially offended some jazz traditionalists but ultimately found a niche in the popular-music mainstream. In the 1970s a critic proclaimed Gillespie "the world's greatest trumpet [player] in or out of jazz." His interest in African American culture is reflected in this portrait, where artist Marc Klionsky-following conversations with the musician about his heritage-flanked Gillespie with African masks.

When we arrived at the party, this jazz band could be heard in the hallway. As I was hanging up my jacket I remarked how they made me feel like I was in a Woody Allen movie, (I had just watched Manhattan Murder Mystery a few days before). Later, when telling my friend Jennifer how great I thought the band was, she mentioned that the trumpet player plays with Woody Allen and possibly does movie scores for him.

Solo Number One!! Wilts & Dorset Optare Solo M850 R601NFX at Salisbury Depot 28/10/2011

Although i'm not normally into photographing "modern" vehicles, this Solo was definitely worth a picture. R601NFX is an Optare Solo M850 which was new in May 1998 as fleet number 2601. What is special about this particular bus is that it was the first Optare Solo to be registered, and only the fifth to be built! This vehicle has chassis number VN6004, VN6000 & VN6001 were development chassis, and VN6002 & VN6003 were Optare demonstrators which weren't registered until several months after VN6004.

Sadly, this Solo will probably be scrapped soon. Although not apparent in this photo, the bus is currently minus most of it's interior fittings and also has no engine & gearbox. Earlier Optare Solo's suffer from corrosion of the chassis spaceframe, and this one is no exception as it has severe corrosion, which is possibly the main reason for it being withdrawn.

Coincidentally, chassis VN6003 (S794XUG, new as an Optare demonstrator in December 1998) is in a similar poor structural condition in the South West Coaches fleet in nearby Wincanton.

Flamenco is a Spanish musical genre with origins in Andalusia and a term that refers both to a musical genre, known for its intricate rapid passages, and a dance genre characterized by its audible footwork. The origins of the term are unclear. The word Flamenco, which applies to the song, the dance and the guitar, did not come into use until the 19th century.
Flamenco embodies a complex musical and cultural tradition. Although considered part of the culture of Spain, flamenco actually originates from one of Spain's regions: Andalusia. However, other areas, mainly Extremadura and Murcia, have contributed to the development of several flamenco musical forms, and a great number of renowned flamenco artists have been born in other territories of the country. It is generally acknowledged that flamenco grew out of the unique interplay of native Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures that existed in Andalusia prior to and after the Reconquest. Latin American and especially Cuban influences have also been important in shaping the rumba flamenco form. Flamenco is the music of the gypsies and played in their social community. Andalusian people who grew up around gypsies, and the life, were also accepted as "flamencos" (Paco de Lucia).
"Flamencologists" or "Pro Dancers" have usually been flamenco connoisseurs of no specific academic training in the fields of history or musicology. They have tended to rely on a limited number of sources (mainly the writings of 19th century folklorist Demofilo, and notes by foreign travellers. Bias has also been frequent in flamencology. This started to change in the 1980s, when flamenco slowly started to be included in music conservatories, and a growing number of musicologists and historians began to carry out more rigorous research. Since then, some new data have shed new light on it.
There are questions not only about the origins of the music and dances of flamenco, but also about the origins of the very word flamenco. George Borrow writes that the word flemenc [sic] is synonymous with "Gypsy").
Blas Infante, in his book Origenes de los Flamencos y Secreto del Cante Jondo, controversially argued that the word flamenco comes from Hispano-Arabic word fellahmengu, which would mean "expelled peasant"after the end of the Moorish reign. term to the ethnic Andalusians of Muslim faith, the Moriscos, who would have mixed with the Gypsy newcomers in order to avoid religious persecution. Other hypotheses concerning the term's etymology include connections with Flanders (flamenco also means Flemish in Spanish), believed by Spanish people to be the origin of the Gypsies, or the flamante (ardent) execution by the performers, or the flamingos.
However, in the 1990s works of scholars, such as the above mentioned Rios Ruiz and Alvarez Caballero demonstrated that there is much historical data available on early flamenco.

A smoky room, a small cafe
They come to hear you play
And drink and dance the night away
I sit out in the crowd
And close my eyes
Dream you're mine
But you don't know
You don't even know that I am there

I wish that I was in your arms
Like that Spanish guitar
And you would play me through the night
'Till the dawn
I wish you'd hold me in your arms
Like that Spanish guitar
All night long, all night long
I'd be your song, I'd be your song

Steal my heart with every note you play
I pray you'll look my way
And hold me to your heart someday
I long to be the one that you caress with
tenderness
And you don't know
You don't even know that I exist

I wish that I was in your arms
Like that Spanish guitar
And you would play me through the night
'Till the dawn
I wish you'd hold me in your arms
Like that Spanish guitar
All night long, all night long
I'd be your song, I'd be your song

Te sientas entre la gente
Cierras tu ojos
Y suenas que soy tuyo
Pero yo no siquiera se que estas ahi
Me gustaria tenerte entre mis brazos amor

I sit out in the crowd
And close my eyes
Dream you're mine
And you don't know
You don't even know that I exist

I wish that I was in your arms

This guy was one of the worst sax players I have ever heard... out of tune, off beat, simply an assault on the ears. That said, he made a pretty good model... thanks dude!

PLEASE NO GIFS/Awards/Flair! If you have a comment/critique I appreciate it, otherwise those things annoy me. And if you invite my pic to your group, don't expect me to comment or award 20 damn pictures or any crap like that... If I invite you to my home for dinner, I am not going to make you do the dishes... it would be rude.
