- The Albatros is a sailing ketch built in the Netherlands in 1899. Now used as a sail training vessel, she was the last sailing ship carrying commercial cargo in Europe.
- The Albatros was built by one Henri Villouin of Paris in 1912. His company made mostly cycles and motorcycles, but did build a light 4-cylinder car. Their advertisement boasted of '91 wins in 92 races', but this is thought to be referring to the cycles.

Albatros Aces of World War 1 Part 2 (Aircraft of the Aces) (v. 2)
Nearly every German ace who flew before the summer of 1918 scored victories in Albatros fighters, whose introduction coincided with the development of the famous and highly successful Jagdstaffeln, the first true German fighter formations, which became a critical German air tactic and helped to wrest back air superiority from the Allies. After wreaking havoc in the skies over Arras the Albatros was eventually outclassed by succeeding generations of Allied aircraft, but still remained the most numerous and ubiquitous of all German fighters in World War I, with Albatros biplanes contributing almost two-thirds of the German fighters at the front during the Spring Offensive of 1918.
This book, with its 32 color profiles, charts the unique markings and design of one of the most menacingly beautiful fighters of the war. Featuring famous and unsung aces, a multitude of first-hand accounts and original photographs, this book offers a fresh view into the experiences of the German pilots who endured a very different kind of war from the troops on the ground. While the soldiers confronted the dangers of No-Man's Land and faceless slaughter, the pilots endured deadly games of cat and mouse in the skies above the trenches.

Centuries in the future, mankind struggles to survive after the "Troubles", a generation-long series of catastrophes that caused the largest population crash in the history of the human race. Everywhere, humanity has regressed to a paleolithic level of technology, hunter-gatherers eking out a bare subsistence -- everywhere except for a single barren sub-Antarctic island where a small group of refugees has managed to preserve some pre-Troubles technology and a semblance of civilization. Against all odds, the Kerguelenians not only survive, but build a maritime culture with settlements throughout the Southern Ocean. As far as they know, they are the only surviving fragment of literacy and technology in the world -- until they begin to expand northward into the Indian Ocean, and encounter a mysterious and hostile people, also seafarers, they know only as "the pirates", who seem determined, for motives unknown, to destroy Kerguelenian trade and settlements. In book one of the Westerly Gales saga, Captain Sam Bowditch has led the creation of a tiny Navy to defend Kerguelenian settlements against the depredations of the pirates, and finds them a fanatical and adaptable enemy. In this, the second volume in the series, Bowditch and the Republic of Kerguelen Navy continue the war -- and are tested to their limits by the enemy. Bowditch is beset by storms in his personal life, as well, torn as he is between two women -- one of whom is his ship's medical officer..
A climactic and bloody battle threatens the infant navy with utter destruction
A reviewer of the first volume in this series, "Westerly Gales", said: "The story is fun and fast paced, the world and the main characters are believable, the sailing very well written and the book very well polished. I read it very quickly and was left wanting for more."

FULLERTON HOTEL - HOTEL
Fullerton hotel - Pitlochry accommodation
Fullerton Hotel
- The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is a five-star boutique hotel located near the mouth of the Singapore River, in the Downtown Core of Central Area, Singapore. It was originally known as The Fullerton Building, and also as the General Post Office Building.. The address is 1 Fullerton Square.
Fullerton Hotel
This was the old Post office that has now become a premium Hotel in SIngapore opposite the famous Merlion .
The Fullerton Building was named after Robert Fullerton, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements (1826-1829).Commissioned in 1919 as part of the British colony's centennial celebrations, the building was designed as an office building by Major P.H. Keys of Keys & Dowdeswell, a Shanghai firm of architects, which won the project through an architectural design competition.
The Fullerton Building was opened on 27 June 1928 by the Governor, Sir Hugh Clifford, who suggested the building be named after Robert Fullerton. The building had five founding tenants: the General Post Office, The Exchange, Singapore Club (now Singapore Town Club), the Marine Department, and the Import and Export Department (later the Ministry of Trade and Industry). It also housed the Chamber of Commerce, and various government departments dealing with agriculture, fisheries and forestry. The General Post Office (GPO) was the anchor tenant, which only moved in a fortnight after the Fullerton Building's official opening.
In 1997, Sino Land (Hong Kong) Company Ltd, a sister company of Far East Organization, acquired the Fullerton Building from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). It spent close to another S$300 million converting Fullerton Building into a hotel and building the two-storey commercial complex One Fullerton opposite Fullerton Road. Renovation works on the Fullerton Building were completed on 8 December 2000. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore was officially opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 1 January 2001

Hotel Oakland Exterior
Exterior above the front entrance of the historic Oakland Hotel. I found this account online:
"Originally constructed between 1910 and 1912 with funds exceeding $3,000,000, the block-square hotel (Figure 1) became a prominent social center during the next decade. Presidents Wilson, Coolidge, and Hoover were guests at the facility, as were other celebrities, including Amelia Earhardt, Sarah Bernhardt, Jean Harlow, and Mary Pickford (Scott 1959).
During the 1930's, the hotel was forced into bankruptcy several times as the result of the depression and management difficulties. In 1943, the U.S. Army took possession of it for use as a hospital. All furnishings were auctioned off, including irreplaceable chandeliers of which only photographs remain. Following World War II, several unsuccessful attempts were made to reopen the hotel for public use. The Veterans' Administration eventually occupied the facility as a hospital until August of 1963. For the next 15 years it stood vacant. In 1978 a Boston-based developer obtained possession and remodeled it into a housing project for the elderly. It remains in this use today."

"A mi hija:
Solo me pregunto por que te has ido y has dejado destrozado mi corazon.

Eiffel Tower from the Hilton Hotel - My story of our arrival
It all started with a great deal. The Hotwire gods shone down well on me and for $153/night, we got the Hilton by the Eiffel Tower. Pretty cool. Well, not so much.
We were leaving Zurich and took the train to Basel. I didn’t know enough to realize that I should have gotten a reservation on the TGV to get to Paris. Train travel in Switzerland is so easy that it lulled me into thinking that everything would be easy.
Of course, we are lugging a bunch of luggage. I pack for myself and the boys. I tried my hardest to pack light (I think we will run out of clothes exactly in time… and may run out one day early which is not that good if it happens). Regardless, Heather was not impressed with my packing job from the get-go and indicated we had too many bags (3 for me and the boys). The way it works out, it means that each family member carries a bag (the small boys have a smaller one, just larger than carry-on size) and the adults have a large bag. I also have Heather’s bike case. We also have Grandpa Greg, Karen and Matthew. They were packed really well and only had like 2.5 bags for the 3 of them.
Back to the story. We got to Basel and found out we had to kill 6 hours before we could board the train to Paris. Not too bad, but we were not very good at killing time. We did everything we could to kill time, but it made it a long day just having to be stuck there. Heather had the good idea of where to stow our luggage at the train station, so at least we didn’t have that worry. We did visit Basel, but it is not the most interesting of cities.
We board the train to Paris and have a nice ride on the TGV. It is comfortable and calming. That calm was the one before the storm. We were arriving in Paris on July 14. For those of us who had to suffer through “ecoutez et repetez” for a few years in high school know that means Bastille Day. Kinda like Fourth of July on crack… sorry “craque”.
Did I tell you I got a good deal on our hotel? That means that we got a nice hotel right by the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Friggin’ Tower is the epicenter of the aforementioned Bastille Day. Oh, and we arrived on the Metro while the event was breaking up. As Heather put it, it was like dropping a non-US family of 4 adults and 4 children into Times Square at 11:59pm on December 31. I would say it was more like 12:05am on January 1 with everyone trying to get away from Times Square (or, in this case the Eiffel Tower and the Hilton).
For those in Atlanta, it would be like telling your worst enemy (and his family) to get off of MARTA at the Lenox station when the Lenox fireworks were finishing and telling them to carry their luggage to the Ritz Carlton up the street. Oh, and make sure the elevators and escalators don’t work. And, make sure that most of the crowd has had too much to drink. And, pick the worst enemy that doesn’t speak the English. Then, multiply by 10 or so. You get the point.
I won’t go into seeing the police wrestle a guy and cart him off in the Metro. Or having to carry our bags up and down stairs in the Metro (BTW, I recommend the institution of the French with Disabilities Act so we can get some darn lifts for luggage at stations). Or having the guys pulled aside directly in front of us by gun-toting riot-gear-wearing police officers who search them for bombs. Or being redirected by police to different stations and having to try to board packed Metro cars with all of our luggage as we watch train after train pass without room thinking we would never make the 2 stops to our hotel.
What was scary and the worst was when we were about 100 yards (sorry 91.44 meters) from our hotel and we had to line up the adults and kids strategically in a single file row to try to get through the mob (and I mean mob… uncontrolled swings of the crowd like a mosh pit, people not moving at all then moving quickly, firecrackers and random fireworks going off, etc.) to our hotel. Going those 91.44 meters probably took us an hour (it is almost 1am at this point and the boys have been on the go since 7:30am).
It was an hour where we were elbowed, yelled at by French people, pushed and shoved. Jack was pick-pocketed by the crowd. Luckily he packs weird things in his pockets, so they got two tubes of mustard and nothing good.
Due my time spent ecoutez-ing and repetez-ing, I was able to understand the bulk of the insults. They didn’t include the phrases “Thanks for Normandy!” or “We appreciate you being nice to us when we visit your country”. Jack didn’t understand the insults and said he was probably happy that he didn’t.
Regardless, we made it through. It was, though, one of the worst parenting decisions that I have ever made. I put the family at real risk and didn’t think through the situation. I guess that is how you learn, but I would rather not learn this close to the edge. It was truly frightening for everyone and not something that I would like to repeat.
We would have been much better off ha

Our hotel suite
This is the bedroom of our little hotel suite, which is on the seventh floor of the Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls. It has a very nice view of both the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls.
We arrived at the hotel the previous evening, but by the time we had arrived, there wasn't much time in the day left to do much, other than unpack and get some takeout food at Applebee's and watch the fireworks from the 14th floor observation lounge. During tourist season, there are fireworks here every Friday and Sunday night, but for the Fourth of July weekend, they had them every day from the first through the fourth. On the third, there were even two fireworks going on simultaneously, as a town very close to the American Falls decided to start their Independence Day fireworks a few minutes before the Niagara Falls fireworks.
The day of our arrival, we also stopped for a brief visit on the American side of the falls, but it wasn't nearly as exciting there as on the Canadian side. I do wish we had stayed long enough on the American side, however, to go on a hot air balloon ride.
Skyline
In this shot you can see the Incline Railway over across the river at the base of the tall building beside the Minolta Tower. It sure would have been nice if it was running when we got back across the river...would have come up right behind the hotel. We had to walk all the way around everything you see in this shot, and then up a hill, and then back to the hotel. :-(
The littler L shaped building in the center is the hotel where I stayed!! The view was fabulous!! :-)
The tallest building on the right is the new fancy schmancy Casino!

Mount Chirripo, Costa Rica
Hotel Uran (more like a hostel, really). I highly recommend this hotel -- it's right by the trailhead, has internet, good food, and a small store to buy what you forgot to bring (e.g. snacks, pastries, etc). It takes about 20 minutes to walk down to the "town" and 10 minutes more to get to the park office. More coming back, since it's up hill.
Hotel, Costa Rica
This photo actually makes the "hotel" look kind of nice. In reality it was just a concrete little bunker with small windows, fans as loud as jet engines, no screens or mosquito nets. That nice carved wooden staircase? Photogenic bit of crumbly wood - climb at your own risk!
