I love seeing cars with no front bumper and so just couldn't help myself from taking a couple of snaps! Front bumper was off for test fit of some supports. Some aftermarket aero will be going on within the next week, will have a full shoot then :]

Wheels are three piece BBS LM's with 19" faces front mounted on reverse lips + barrels, work done by a local SoCal shop who will soon blow up!. Specs are 18x11 ET25 all around with 265/35/18 Hankook R-S3's. No rubbing, of course!

Looking out across Glasgow from the James Wier building at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. As you can see, there is still a tiny bit of the snow left.

The big tower in front of the crane is The Glasgow City Chambers, which there is several more pictures of on this page.

The picture was taken through a window, hence the vague reflections

Never Before Seen Six-wheel Alfa Project - April 1,1970

Never Before Seen Six-wheel Alfa Project - April 1,1970

In secret testing almost two weeks (April 1 to be exact) after the 1970 Sebring race Alfa Romeo arrived at Sebring with their one-of-a-kind six-wheeled, twelve cylinder Alfa-Romeo T33/6/12. It sported a 5-liter V12/60 degrees/4v engine. It was designed to give the Porsche 917 a run for its money. The six-wheel Alfa project was cancelled abruptly after teens from a local high school snuck onto the raceway at night and stole the car from its hanger/garage. The chassis was found two weeks later in a nearby orange grove minus the engine. For several years after this incident rumors circulated about a V12 hot rod that was blowing away all comers in the Sebring area. Not to be outdone by Alfa, other race constructors jumped on the six-wheel bandwagon. Ferrari had their 312/T6, Tyrrell had the P34, March had the 2-4-0 and Williams had the FW08B. In both the WSC and Formula 1 these cars were soon outlawed. How did I get the photo? I worked the 1970 Sebring race and left a piece of camera equipment behind. I drove down two weeks later and made my way onto the course without anyone knowing. As I was looking for my equipment the car came by for several runs and I managed to get this photo. I had a feeling I wasn't supposed to do this so I hightailed it out of there.

With prom season back again many high schools in the area stage mock crash scenarios to bring home the message of the dangers and consequences of driving while impaired. Naugatuck Fire, EMS, and Police participated in such an event this morning for the senior class of the Naugatuck High School.

The scene was set for a two car accident involving students from the class traveling from the prom. The accident occurred due to one of the drivers being impaired and the consequences of his poor judgment were which included several major injuries, the need for extrication, his arrest for driving impaired, and the death of one of their classmates prior to her graduation.

The students who participated in the scenario and emergency service personnel did a great job in portraying the situation and it appeared to be well received by the students. Even if this mock incident keeps only one teenager from getting behind the wheel while impaired it is a success.

I try to photograph at least one incident like this per year in hopes that the pictures might speak for themselves and help discourage underage drinking and operating a motor vehicle while impaired. Many thanks to NFD Chief Doback for giving me free access to the event to take these photographs.

HDR-Mabini Bridge (top view)

HDR-Mabini Bridge (top view)

Big Commotion on the Mabini Bridge!!

First it was a man riding his bicycle, then a woman walking with her two teenage boys. Next, a man with his three-wheeled motorcycle/taxi (locally called a tricycle) pulled over to take a look. He left his passengers waiting while he went to investigate. Women who were doing their laundry by the river’s edge stopped doing their chores and walked a little closer to have a better view. Their children swimming nearby stopped their games and followed their mothers. Finally, the driver of the big truck carrying tons of rice parked so close to the edge of the bridge that I though he was going to drop his cargo down in the water.

Pretty soon there is a crowd of about 20 people looking down the edge of the Mabini Bridge towards the Balincaguin River to see the reason of this commotion. (“Balincaguin” means “house of bats” in the Zambal language). Speaking to Charley Nelson in broken English, and looking very concerned, one man asks “dynamite, dynamite?“ Local fishermen often use dynamite (illegally) to kill fish for easy catching. “No”, Charley answered, trying to calm him down, “there is no dynamite“.

So, what was the reason for all this commotion on the Mabini bridge? These people happened to witness Charley dropping over the edge of the bridge with a big, black caver bag with a climbing rope inside and attached to the massive supports of the bridge. What happened was that Charley, Daniel and I were preparing to rappel down the bridge to the river level. I guess this is not done very often.

When we put our harnesses on with all the noisy hardware, they were doubtful. But when Charley moved over the edge and called “On rappel !!” they could not believe their eyes. The people were very curious on how he was going to come up. Some of them tried to guess if he was going to detach himself from the rope and swim to the little beach or climb the rope hand-over-hand. To their surprise, Charley started doing his change-over and very gracefully frogged all the way to the top.

Next was Daniel Veelik. He went down very carefully and somehow managed to stop about 4 feet above the water level. A miscalculation on his part would put him in the river with questionable water quality. Very cautiously he did his change-over, and with his, by now well-known, record-breaking speed, quickly reached the top.

Then it was my turn to rappel down the Mabini bridge. For some reason, it did not feel good, but heck, what could go wrong? I started going down. Somehow I miscalculated the distance to the water, and suddenly the river was just inches away and too close for my comfort. Very quickly I did a soft lock on my stop, but that was not enough. I was still sliding !! Daniel was yelling at me from above “stop, stop”. I answered back “I’m trying!!“ With the toes of my boots touching the water, I was able to put a hard lock. I never thought I could bend my knees so high as this time. My problems were not over yet. By being so close to the water, I was able to see all the ripples and small waves. Trying to do my change-over I was causing the rope to go around and around. That was a little too much. I was having vertigo!!

With a queasy stomach, I was soon successful with my change-over and finally on my way to the top. It was very strange to see all those many faces from the local people looking at me. I was happy to reach the safety of the road. The woman and her two teenage boys were friendlier than in the beginning. At first I didn‘t know why. Happens that while I was down below, this lady starts talking with Daniel. She tells him that she has never seen anybody doing this kind of activity in real life. The only place she has seen anything similar has been on DISCOVERY CHANNEL. Daniel, with a very straight face and in all seriousness, told the woman “WE ARE THOSE PEOPLE FROM DISCOVERY CHANNEL!! “ We’re still laughing about that one.

The air temperature was getting very hot and humid. Charley and Daniel each rappelled again, but I remained atop the bridge trying to keep cool. Feeling hot, hungry, and thirsty, the decision was made to pick up the gear and visit “cave central“, or the LOMI HOUSE. This is a little, local restaurant in Mabini, where Charley and some of his trainees meet after caving for a bowl of delicious local specialty soup call LOMI and a well-deserved cold RED HORSE beer.

What could be better ?, Great company, great adventures, and great beer.

Note: Mabini bridge is located just outside Mabini Town, near Alaminos City, Pangasinan Province, Luzon Island, Philippines.

Day 79 - Dance Dance Revolution "DDR" (series)

Day 79 - Dance Dance Revolution

Firstly. IT'S "DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!".
The dumb Euro translation to "Dancing Stage" is such an inferior name in my opinion.

DDR is one of the hottest attractions to ever hit the Arcades. It was rare you'd see crowds generating at specific machines in your average arcade unless someone was REALLY REALLY good at a specific game, or perhaps if 2 competitive players were going at it at a fighting game (which is a rarer sight in the UK).

DDR could constantly pull a crowd though, first of all it was usually high volume thus in your face with fast paced music (and being loud is one way to score easy attention).

Then you had the fact that people were using there whole body to play a game, which was a stand out thing in a place were everything pretty much required hands on a controller (whether that be arcade buttons, a gun, a steering wheel, etc...), but most of all, people could clearly see if someone was impressive at the game without needing to look over someone's shoulder. You could see clearly if someone was in rhythm and styling on the dance mat with skills, and it was impressive to watch...thus the crowds.

I personally have a lot of respect for the DDR series personally. Around the year of 2003/ 2004 I was out of shape, and just felt like I was stuck in a routine that would continue for life pretty much.

Then when I finally got myself a dance game at home I really got to up my skills at the game, and the process of getting better was a lot of fun. This fun came with a bonus though, that bonus being cardio!

See DDR/ Dancing Stage is actually a really fun form of Cardio excercise. Without really thinking about it I was jumping around on a dance mat for at least 30mins most days of the week.

Over 1 summer I must've dropped a couple of stone at least, and from there I had stronger leg muscles, and more energy for every day life. It was a transformation from 'average' to 'athletic' and DDR was my key.

I've got a love for the DDR series as a whole, so I'm not nominating a specific version into this nostalgic parade I'm on. There are always good songs on each version (generally the original ones, although a few licensed tracks have had some sweet mixes done for them), so it's not like I need to really read a review when buying a DDR game, as long as it's one by Konami, then I've got faith in it :)

Although....being a huge fan of the Mario series and universe, I have a lot of love for "DDR/ Dancing Stage: Mario Mix". "Mario Mix" had a cool Mario inspired story mode including many Mario universe cameo's to go through, and best of all it had some fantastic remix's of classic Mario songs, ranging from "Donkey Kong" and the "Super Mario Bros. series" all the way up to the Nintendo Gamecube's "Mario Kart Double Dash" and "Wario World" (which were kind of new games around the time of the release of "Mario Mix".

Much <3 to the DDR announcer voice too, that voice is embedded in my head for life.

Hilton Omaha

Hilton Omaha

Thankful to the gracious family members that opened their houses to us during this vacation, we've opted to spend some points and shack up in the Hilton Omaha for the remainder of our visit. I haven't stayed at Hilton-brand hotels much this year (due to travel policy of my employer), so these points were just kind of sitting around doing nothing. Now they've been put to work.

The Hilton Omaha is attached to the Qwest Center, which much to my surprise has actually been pretty busy these past few days. Apparently the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) hockey teams plays at the Center. As I type this I can read some of the other events on the electronic billboard that will be coming soon including: Sesame Street Live, a bridal fair, The Rolling Stones, Nickelback and Coldplay.

Our stay thusfar has been very nice (and warm), and I would recommend the hotel to others looking for a place to stay in Omaha. We generally stay at the Embassy Suites (another Hilton property) at the end of the Old Market, but they were sold out. We like the space, refrigerator, microwave and other accomodations that are nice to have when traveling with Paige (almost 19 months).

Visit with the Vet

John's one of my favorite characters on my Meals-on-Wheels route. He's a World War II vet who was a Medic in the Army and on D-Day was on Omaha Beach. As you can guess, he has a few tales to tell. My dog Joey normally helps me deliver the meals, but today my wife was able to come and I decided to capture a little piece of history.

This was shot mostly ambient light with a hint of a Canon 580ex II flash for a fill. The flash was gelled full-straw and bounced off the wall behind me.

Camera Settings: f/1.8, 1/60th, iso 500

Nuit Blanche 2009 - Zone B Exhibit 15 - Bright Lights, Big City, 2009

Nuit Blanche 2009 in Toronto looked like it might be a wet event in the early evening... a steady rain poured down outside the restaurant while we ate... and my car got ticketed! Fortunately, the weather cleared quickly and the night was graced with a full moon, perfect for the spirit of the night's events!

The CN tower looked stunning under the moon, as viewed from Front St. W and York Street, with it's lights pulsating to the sound show of:

Bright Lights Big City, 2009

Multimedia Installation

The Toronto skyline pulses from dusk to dawn as the lights of the landmark CN Tower syncopate with a radio broadcast of high-energy electronic and moody ambient music. The artist’s audio collaborations will involve electronic mixes by DJs Jokers of the Scene and music by the band if then do. Groove to the pulsing lights of North Americas tallest free standing structure, the CN Tower, synced to a simultaneous broadcast on CIUT 89.5 FM.

Big City Fence {Explored - Front page}

Big City Fence  {Explored - Front page}

I found this fence near my hotel on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago last week. While the fence isn't anything super special, I did like the fact that the bustlling city streets made for some nice people and traffic light bokeh!

If you haven't been to Chicago, I can't recommend it more. Not only is there tons of stuff to do, the people just can't be beat. Twice in Starbucks people gave up their seats to give me a place to sit down, strangers on the street asked if I needed help getting somewhere, and once when a stranger overheard me coughing (I had a bad cold) he offered to give me some of his extra cold medicine! I live in the South and hear a lot about Southern hospitality - while that is also a great thing, I believe that nothing compares to the genuine niceness of the mid-west!

HFF and have a wonderful day flickr friends!

Leaving Locomotive Point

Leaving Locomotive Point

Leaving the Head of Sinbad rock art panels. We had camped around behind Locomotive Point and thoroughly enjoyed the history, scenery, and wide open spaces of this area.

After we completed our hike to the Rochester Creek rock art panel, we drove the Moore Cutoff road to I-70. It had been a long day and we hoped to get as close as we could to the “Head of Sinbad” pictograph panels, where we wanted to camp for the night in the back of our pickup truck.

I had all kinds of maps and copies from various guide books, along with the pamphlet the folks at the Emery, Utah gas station had given me. Still I wanted to make sure we would head in the right direction so we wouldn’t waste valuable “road trip” find, by getting lost in the wide open desert country of the San Rafael Swell.

We took exit 131 off I-70. I had traveled the Temple Mt. road to Goblin Valley in the past, and this looked like the “shortest” way into Locomotive Point and the Head of Sinbad panels. The BLM map on the information board on the south side of I-70 cinched it. It clearly showed the turns I needed to make and the BLM road numbers I would take to get to our destination. It was getting late in the day so we headed down the dirt road, making a right at the proper place and then we came to the “culvert” passage that would take us back under I-70, heading north.

The dirt road was easy up to this point, but the “rock ramp” built up by off road enthusiasts to get through one of the two big culvert passages looked like it required due care and caution. Once under the interstate the sandy route to Locomotive Point was a pleasure to travel.

We visited the two panel areas. I am going to give them some names so I can refer to them more easily in this narrative. The Head of Sinbad panels face south and are little more than a mile north of I-70. In fact, now that I know where they are, I will be able to easily pick the area out, when driving I-70 between Green River, Utah and Fremont Junction.

The Head of Sinbad “west panel” was disappointing. The heads were missing for the entire row of pictographs. What I have read is that these 3,000 year old pictographs have not been vandalized, yet to me, it looked as though the missing upper portion of the pictographs - - didn’t look natural (if so, the heads should be laying on the ground, below where they fell - -they weren’t).

Next we drove over to the Head of Sinbad “West panel”. This was what we had come to see and it was impressive. There are two sets of figures on at the West panel and they are not far apart. Though the day was almost gone, we spent time staring up at these intriguing pictographs and taking photographs.

Next we drove west then north on a very sandy four wheel drive track until we found a side road leading up to a sandstone cliff sheltered camping spot, under a large pinon pine tree. Here we slept the night under a black desert sky filled with brilliant white stars. Wonderful!

Early the next morning, while my wife organized our traveling gear I clambered up the steep sides of the surrounding sandstone to get some “dawn” photos of the area we had camped. After leaving camp we opted to skip visiting the nearby arch and get back to the West panel of the pictographs, to have the area to ourselves and get some photos with the early morning light. This we did.

After retracing our route back to I-70 we headed east bound for the Black Dragon panel and for a hike up nearby Petroglyph Canyon.

Road Trip - Utah April 17th - 24th, 2010: My wife and I headed for Southern Utah, just before midnight on Friday the 16th of April (after she got off work at her part time job). We drove straight through to Southern Utah, to take advantage of the good weather forecast early on in our trip. Storms were forecast for later in the trip and in fact we got a pretty good taste of same on Wednesday the 21st.

Here in outline form are the places we visited and hiked:

Saturday 4.17.2010
> Rochester Rock Art Panel near Emery, Utah
> The Moore cutoff road
> Sinbad’s head pictograph panel (we camped under a pinon pine near here)

Sunday 4.18.2010
> Black Dragon Canyon rock art panel (after first taking the wrong turn and doing some interesting four wheel drive travel way up the San Rafael River). Short hike.
> Pictograph Canyon pictographs. Short but interesting hike.
> Drive Hanksville, Torrey, Boulder, to Escalante (check into motel)

Monday 4.19.2010
> Drive out the Hole In The Rock Road. Visit Devil’s Garden and Metate Arch.
> Drive to Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch. Hike down to Peek-a-boo and Spooky slot canyons. I hiked the loop up Peek-a-boo and down Spooky while my wife hiked with another lady hiker up Dry Fork and then down to the bottom of Spooky.

Tuesday 4.20.2010
> Hike Lower Calf Creek Falls (my third hike here and my wife’s second) and scramble up to two sets of pictograph panels.

Wednesday 4.21.2010
> Drive the

Always surprises in the desert

It always moves me, when I see those left behind paying tribute to a lost friend or relative. This memorial is along side the dirt road, just south of I-70 at exit 131. Nicely created.

Wednesday 4.21.20
