New York Helmsley Hotel (formerly The New York Harley – a Helmsley Hotel)

New York Helmsley Hotel (formerly The New York Harley – a Helmsley Hotel)

New York Helmsley Hotel (formerly The New York Harley – a Helmsley Hotel)
212 East 42nd Street
New York City NY

The hotel's porte-cochere
------
The 41 floor 773-room New York Harley Hotel was built by Harry Helmsley in 1981. Harley is taken from the first 3 letters of Harry and the first two letters of his wife’s name Leona. Harry married Leona in 1972 and named Leona the president of Helmsley Hotel in 1980. Leona was once a Chesterfield girl appearing in the cigarette maker’s ads. Under Leona’s leadership The Harley hotel had 3 general managers in its first year and half of operations.

The Harley had rates of $60-$80 in 1981 and its advertising tag line was “a great hotel with all kinds of extra touches – like a bathroom phone and remote control color TV”. Another advertising line was “Harley Hotel New York - A great hotel does not have to be expensive.”

The hotel’s bar was called Harry’s Bar and the hotel restaurant was named Mindy’s, Leona’s middle name. The hotel’s insignia was two interlocking H’s – which stood for Harley Hotel and not Helmsley Hotels.

The architect was Emery Roth & Sons who also designed the Helmsley Park Lane in 1971 and the World Trade Center in 1973.

Harry Helmsley was a real estate mogul who built a company that became one of the biggest property holders in the United States. His portfolio at one time included the Empire State Building, the Flatiron and Toy Center buildings on Fifth Avenue.

His hotel portfolio in 1981 included The Helmsley Palace, the Park Lane Hotel, the Harley Middletowne Hotel, the New York Harley, The Harley Windsor Hotel, the St. Moritz and the Carlton House hotels. In 1981 in an attempt to expand outside of New York City Helmsley bought the Hospitality Motor Inn chain from Standard Oil of Ohio for $36 million and renamed it Harley Hotel chain.

In 1989 Leona Helmsley is indicted for tax fraud. She was imprisoned from 1992-1993.

Harry Helmsley dies in 1997, leaving entire estate to Leona.

In 1997 Ritz-Carlton pulled its flag from the Central Park South hotel owned by Saudi Arabian businessman Sheik Abdul Aziz bin Ibrahim al-Ibrahim leaving the Ritz chain without a hotel in Manhattan. Ritz Carlton looked very hard at acquiring the Helmsley New York. Ritz was prepared to spend millions overhauling the hotel which had not received a significant renovation since opening 18 years earlier.

According to the NY Times, hotel experts say Leona Helmsley was expecting $200 million+ for the property or $250,000 per room – but Ritz Carlton and and also Patriot American balked at that price. The bidders were not willing to pay more than $160 million for a property that needed tens of millions of dollars in renovations some said.

Leona Helmsley decided she was up to the task of turning around the underperforming property. In 1997 it is estimated the New York Helmsley was running 70% occupancy, below the city average of 80%. Some rooms going for as low as $150 a night.

The NY Times quoted hotel experts as saying the Helmsley New York suffered from high management turnover and a lack of affiliation with a national hotel chain. John Fox of PKF Consulting told the NY Times "Nobody knows it's there."

The hotel became the New York Helmsley Hotel following the sale of the Harley Hotel chain in 1998.

Leona Helmsley died in 2007.

In May 2010 the trust managing the estate completed a renovation of the lobby, Harry’s Bar and Mindy’s restaurant – which oddly was named Leona’s after the Queen of Mean.

Zack Zahran, the hotel’s general manager told the NY Times ''Not many people know the name Mindy was the middle name of Leona, we chose to make it Leona's.''

The new menu for Leona’s also created ill feelings with consumers as the menu stated at the bottom “For the high standard of service, a 19 percent gratuity will be applied to your check.” This policy seems to run afoul with the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs.

Executive Chef Brian Wieler designed the new menu and the interiors were done by J/Brice International Design of Boston.

The Trust managing the Leona Helmsley estate told The Real Deal in November 2010 the New York Helmsley Hotel has drawn 15 different bidders – including Tishman Hotel & Realty. The bidding hopefuls made offers exceeding $300 million.

According to HVS the Helmsley New York was sold in January 2011 by the Estate of Leona Helmsley to Host Hotels for $313,500,000 ($405,000 per room)

Upon the change in ownership GM Zack Zahran returned to the Helmsley Park Lane as the General Manager. He is the former Resident Manager and Director of Food and Beverage of the Peninsula New York.

Host Hotels & Resorts expects top flag the hotel under the Westin Hotels & Resorts brand in mid-2012 after an extensive renovation of the 775 guest rooms and upgrade of the meeting place. Host has contracted with Starwood Hotels and Resorts, parent company of Westin, to operate the hotel on a daily basis.

At Verona

HOW steep the stairs within Kings' houses are
For exile-wearied feet as mine to tread,
And O how salt and bitter is the bread
Which falls from this Hound's table,--better far
That I had died in the red ways of war,
Or that the gate of Florence bare my head,
Than to live thus, by all things comraded
Which seek the essence of my soul to mar.

'Curse God and die: what better hope than this?
He hath forgotten thee in all the bliss
Of his gold city, and eternal day'--
Nay peace: behind my prison's blinded bars
I do possess what none can take away,
My love, and all the glory of the stars.

2010-08-04 - DENVER - DAG 12 - zware donderstormen in opkomst

2010-08-04 - DENVER - DAG 12 - zware donderstormen in opkomst

Day 77 - Sick Bag

Day 77 - Sick Bag

Andy and I were invited to join our friends in Las Vegas for a couple of days to witness their vow renewal. We left Wednesday night and somewhere between Edmonton and Denver I got a migraine. A migraine mixed with turbulence was almost a recipe for disaster. I didn't get sick on the plane, but I did take the sick bag with me when I left. I spent quite a while in the airport with my face in this bag. I didn't need it though, except for spitting out the sketchy airport food I tried to eat.

We were delayed in Denver and didn't get into Las Vegas until midnight. Then we took the shuttle, which turned out to be a limousine, to our hotel, the Tropicana. The air in Tropicana's lobby is coconut scented, which I'm sure sounds like an excellent idea to some, but when mixed with the cigarette smoke from the casino it smells like a smoker's car. That was my first impression of Las Vegas. Standing at the check-in I wanted nothing more than to be home. Things started looking up when we got to our room though. It didn't smell like anything.

Oregon wine industry grows to $2.7 billion

Oregon wine industry grows to $2.7 billion

An economic study released today shows that the Oregon wine industry’s contribution to the state reached $2.7 billion last year, double its impact in 2005.

By increasing tourism, selling grapes and wine, and employing more Oregonians, the wine industry is becoming one of the state’s leading agricultural industries. Bottom line: Wine is green and it is growing.

“We were expecting to show growth,” says Kara Olmo, who serves on the Oregon Wine Board and is co-owner of Wooldridge Creek Winery in the Applegate Valley. “We watch the trending and really look at what is going on. But even with that, we were extremely surprised, impressed and excited about the tremendous growth and the way we achieved it looks like it’s the beginning of more growth to come.”

As far as the immediate positive impact of the results, “it makes us feel good and gives us a sense of security,” she says.

The study shows that there were 13,518 wine?related jobs in Oregon in 2010. Wages amounted to $382 million.

Oregon’s 419 wineries produced 1.7 million cases of wine worth $252 million. Half of the wine was sold out of state.

The state’s 849 vineyard owners experienced a bonanza too. Oregon’s grape production was up 38%, compared to California’s increase of 17% and Washington’s 21%.

Unlike other agricultural products, more of the revenue from wine stays in Oregon, according to the report. Grapes are crushed and wine is produced here. The wine is then packaged, marketed and sold here to rs, foreign importers and tourists.

Consumers also benefit. When Olmo first saw the results of the study, she flashbacked to the many long discussions she has had with other people in the wine industry about extending beyond selling wine to offering authentic experiences:

“We are working together so people who come to visit the area can experience what Oregon means,” says Olmo. “When people take the time to visit us, they get to see beyond the tasting room. The owners are there. The winemakers are busy. The vineyard people are coming in for lunch. Visitors get to experience the real business. For guests, it’s an exciting look.”

Here’s the complete report from the Oregon Wine Board:

Impact of Oregon Wine Industry on State’s Economy Nearly Doubles since 2005

PORTLAND – July 14, 2011 – The Oregon wine industry is emerging as one of the state’s most strategic agricultural industries based on its rapid growth and key contributions to Oregon tourism, according to a new study released today by the Oregon Wine Board. The study shows that the economic impact of Oregon’s wine industry nearly doubled to $2.7 billion since the last study in 2005.

The study, conducted by Full Glass Research, a Berkeley, Calif.-based market and industry research firm specializing in wine and food, was commissioned by the Oregon Wine Board, a semi-independent state agency managing industry marketing, research and education.

Since the last study was conducted in 2005, wine’s contribution to the state’s economy has grown by 93% during a time when the Oregon wine industry weathered the worst consumer recession in its history.

“This study reflects the amazing performance by what is rapidly becoming the state’s leading agricultural industry,” said Sam Tannahill, chairman of the Oregon Wine Board. “Oregon wine is really on a roll and we are poised to continue the kind of growth we have enjoyed recently as demand for our wines expands both nationally and internationally.”

Outlook for continue growth remains positive

The outlook for continued growth of the Oregon wine industry appears to be quite position as familiarity with Oregon’s high quality, artisan style of wines has increased among savvy wine consumers. Among core wine consumers, preference for Oregon wines climbed from 19% to 23% over the past five years.

Among those who had purchased Oregon wines in the past three months, agreement that the wines were unique increased from 48% to 65%. Those who considered Oregon wines of superior quality compared to other wines increased from 42% to 59% between 2005 and 2009.

“We have made some amazing strides during the last five years,” said Tannahill. “Oregon could not be in a better position to capitalize on the growing interest in the kinds of artisan quality wines that are being produced by our wineries. This report demonstrates why it’s a very exciting time for Oregon wine.”

The report contained a bevy of good news for Oregon’s 419 wineries and 849 vineyard owners who produce wine from grapes grown in the four primary regions of the state – the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, the Columbia Gorge and Walla Walla.

In 2010, wine-related jobs in Oregon totaled 13,518 and related wages were $382 million. Oregon’s wineries produced 1.7 million cases of wine worth $252 million in 2010 with about half of that being sold to customers outside of the state.

The Desk Of Director :

All the studies and surveys made all over world show a huge gap between supply and demand of trained manpower all over the world in Hospitality Industry. There are many reasons behind it which may be focused somewhere else, but the point convinced us to step into the field for educating the youth as per the need of the industry and providing the young generation with right career option

We, a group, closely associated with hospitality Industry decided to devote our time and share our experience for drawing the attention of the youth to this career option and to provide the industry well groomed, skilled manpower.

Hospitality is the field where one will get ample opportunity of enjoying the life, beside satisfying the need of guests (which is really a tough job, and obviously not cup of tea for every one) with a smile on leap, only if he or she is well trained and mentally prepared to face the hassels of the job. ... And in three Years of Bsc degree, beside giving the students technical knowledge, we show them those corners of their profession and holding their hands tight, we make them mentally prepared, so that, tomorrow in industry, their attitude may make the tough situation easy and they dont run away.

Our Hotel Management courses and various activities aim to develop technical and managerial skills among our students and grow love and attraction for the profession.

Our highly qualified faculty pool share their knowledge with students, not for the sake of profession only, but they share their rich experiences with them to keep them uptodate about the facts and figures and present scenario of the industry.

We believe our success lies in the success of our students. We wish a height of sucess for them from where they can set examples for others.

For social cause, we offer Diploma (UGC recognised) to one reallly financially backward student in each batch. We really mean it when we utter “ Our Students Glitter .... and so we boast

Not only was the food excellent but never once did I ever see a hyperactive three legged alarm clock so you know this place has got to be good.

We made the trip to the Stratosphere. I didn't realize how far off of the current strip it was, we started walking there but, in the 115 degree 5% humidity heat, we eventually needed to stop for water and then grab the shuttle bus.

When we got there I was shocked at how tired it was. It is definitely in it's senior years as far as Las Vegas attractions go.

I was somewhat annoyed at how winding the path was to get to the Stratosphere elevators - obviously wanting you to pass EVERY SINGLE SHOP in their gallery before you get there.

When we got there it wasn't at all clear where to go or what to do, then I saw the metal detectors and the fact that the security folks were haphazardly searching bags or not just put me off.

In the end we decided not to bother going up. This attraction is past it's prime and my original enthusiasm was gone.

Common Wombat - Vombatus Ursinus

The only 'bare-nosed' wombat species, out of the three species in Australia, is a reasonably common resident (particularly within protected habitat) from just over the QLD-NSW border downwards into Victoria as well as Flinder's Island and Tasmania. It inhabits cool, open forests and grasslands, often in mountainious regions. Breeding is all year round, but the mother will only raise one young in 2 years, assuming it survives. Destruction of habitat and roadkill are the two main threats to wombats, but, especially in some more southerly National Parks, such as Cradle Mountain and Narawntapu in Tasmania, and Wilson's Promontory in Victoria, Wombats are very common, and will allow humans to get within metres of them, due to habituation.
