- A space entirely devoid of matter
- A space or container from which the air has been completely or partly removed
- void: an empty area or space; "the huge desert voids"; "the emptiness of outer space"; "without their support he'll be ruling in a vacuum"

- A gap left by the loss, death, or departure of someone or something formerly playing a significant part in a situation or activity
Vacuuming Done
Well, there's the result. Not too shabby. Not perfect either. I think this particular stain may have needed pre-treating. I just used the plain stuff to try it out.
After the Wipes
First attempt was some water, then the Goo Gone carpet wipes. Not a stellar performance. I had enough of scrubbing every time Jonah had a 'problem'.

Post race "talk" with Mark Martin
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Upset With Mark Martin After Michigan NASCAR Race, But Calmer After Hendrick Teammates Speak
Dale Earnhardt Jr. roared through the Michigan International Speedway garage, hitting the brakes just as his No. 88 car approached the lift gate of his hauler. The car's momentum left it skidding to a stop on the lift gate, and he hastily unbuckled his belts and climbed out, dropping his helmet on the roof of the car with a thud.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver stood for a moment, hands on his hips, and stared in disgust at his wrecked machine.
This was clearly the most frustrated he'd been after a NASCAR race in 2011. And it wasn't just the 21st-place finish that bothered him, but how he ended up with the disappointing result.
"The defining moment," he said, "probably was getting ran into the wall by Mark."
On the last long green-flag run of the race, Earnhardt Jr. was gaining ground on teammate Mark Martin when, suddenly, Martin moved up the track and forced Earnhardt Jr. into the wall.
Replays were inconclusive, but it seemed unlikely the typically clean-racing Martin would do anything to jeopardize another driver's day – let alone a teammate's.
But Earnhardt Jr. was upset that Martin put both drivers into that situation in the first place.
"If the tables were turned, I'd have been smarter and given him plenty of room," Earnhardt Jr. said, his voice rising. "He's older than me, been racing forever, he's forgot more stuff than I'll ever know. But still, I take better care of people (on the track) than that."
If similar circumstances presented themselves in the future, Earnhardt Jr. said, "I'll still drive on the outside of him; hopefully he won't run me in the wall."
Minutes later, about 10 haulers down the row, Martin emerged in a blue t-shirt and seemed surprised to hear Earnhardt Jr. was upset.
"He got up on the outside of me coming off the corner and I squeezed him," Martin said. "It was an accident. We had an accident."
Martin said he would have gladly given Earnhardt Jr. racing room – if he'd known the driver was on his right-rear quarterpanel.
But by the time Martin realized it, he said, "it was too late."
"I had my front wheels cut and I let off the gas, and that's all I could do at that point," he said. "It was my mistake."
Martin then shrugged and held his hands up in a gesture that indicated, 'What else do you want me to say?'
"I don't have a history of having problems," he said. "I think we'll get it sorted out. I feel like I give everybody on the racetrack plenty of respect. I made a mistake."
It's rare for Earnhardt Jr. to get publicly upset with another driver, and Martin likely wanted to resolve any ill feelings as soon as possible.
So the veteran driver walked down the row of haulers and glance to the left upon passing the No. 88, peering inside the open door.
There, Martin saw Earnhardt Jr. talking with crew chief Steve Letarte. Martin stopped in his tracks, went into the hauler and immediately started explaining what happened.
He left after a brief conversation, and Earnhardt Jr. seemed to have calmed down afterward.
"I feel better," Earnhardt Jr. said. "He got tight off the corner – I had the same thing happen to me (earlier in the race). I can't tell when he's pushing. I got up on his right-rear quarter panel, and he got real, real tight up off the corner. He was out of the gas, wasn't nothing he could do."
So did Earnhardt Jr. accept Martin's explanation for the incident?
"Absolutely, yeah," he said. "Mark wouldn't lie to me."
Earnhardt Jr. shifted his weight and took a breath. Though he remained third in points, his emphasis on consistency this season has left him particularly frustrated when his results don't match the car's potential.
"I was just pissed off at the end of the race – just mad," he said. "Cause I want to finish where I'm supposed to finish, and that didn't happen today, so I was real PO'd about it. But Mark come gave me a good explanation. I believe it, and that's the end of it."
Clean Cleaner
on Goethe
It's not the first favourite but is the most important one to me. 1980. I was living in Chicago on an exchange programme I set up from Manchester Polytechnic with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago... I was working to get away from black and white photography. I wanted to master colour without relying on the strength of b&w's graphic allure. I still clearly remember this. It was hot and humid and very bright. The sun was almost directly overhead. Walking along absorbed by other stuff; I used to walk along Goethe because it was away from the traffic on Lakeshore Drive and I liked the idea of taking a small detour along a philosopher's alley. A very quiet little street, exclusive homes, I reckoned and I hoped it would rub off on me. And there was this very clean looking guy doing something with a rag and bucket and ladder. So I took a photograph. I liked the balance of everything in the shot - curves, angles straights horizontals, light shade and a little bit of red on the ladder, picked up in the flowers along the bonnet and in the window box. The silver grey car and green windows seem a foil for the colour of the wall and hedge. And the symmetry within the window frames. And the spherical lights leaning over with the phone line shadows glancing down the wall. It's very busy but very still at the same time. I could go on.
I used to process my own negs then. I used 100asa c42 film overexposed half a stop and underdeveloped half a stop. My tutors at college thought I was shooting transparency and doing c type prints. Says it all really.
I printed something like 300 off this negative postcard size for the college photography degree show invitations. Each one had to be burned in at the corners and the right hand side to get the telegraph line shadows dark enough and dodged around the man and the centre above the tree.

What readers are saying: 'The author has saved the best for last. I could not put it down!' 'A thrilling and thought-provoking book...definitely the best of the three.' 'One of the best books I have ever read.' 'The story is like a fine-cut diamond; the deeper you look into it, the more mesmerized you become.' 'All books have a last page, but we know the story goes on. Hopefully, this one will.' Gaelen of the Greatwood has taken a desperate chance in placing Gorgon's ring on her own finger. Now there begins a tale of deceit and promise, of courage, betrayal, dark plans and poisonous alliances. Gaelen and Nelwyn have ventured farther from their homeland than any two Wood-elves in reckoning, but their journey now takes them deeper into desolation, forcing a confrontation that may well end in the downfall of the World that Is. At the heart of it all is the Stone of Leir, and the mighty but forlorn spirit trapped within.

Abelard & Heloise: The Letters and Other Writings
The most comprehensive compilation of the works of Abelard and Heloise ever presented in a single volume in English, The Letters and Other Writings features an accurate and stylistically faithful new translation of both The Calamities of Peter Abelard and the remarkable letters it sparked between the ill-fated twelfth-century philosopher and his brilliant former student and lover -- an exchange whose intellectual passion, formal virtuosity, and psychological drama distinguish it as one of the most extraordinary correspondences in European history. Thanks to this edition, Latin-less readers will be better placed than ever to see why this undisputed milestone in the intellectual life of medieval France is also a masterpiece of Western literature.
In addition to the The Calamities and the letters -- the first complete English translation of all seven in more than eighty years -- this volume includes an Introduction, a map, and a chronology, Abelard's Confession of Faith, letters between Heloise and Peter the Venerable, the Introduction to The Questions of Heloise, and selected songs and poems by Abelard, among them a previously untranslated "shaped" poem, "Open Wide Your Eyes." Extracts of "lost" letters sometimes ascribed to Abelard and Heloise are given in appendixes.

Abelard and Heloise are nearly as famous a pair of tragic lovers as the fictional Romeo and Juliet, and their story (as revealed in "The Letters of Abelard and Heloise") remains one of the world's most dramatic and well-known love affairs. Their shared passion for knowledge, religious faith, and one another sealed their destiny. Abelard was a well-respected, 12th-century Parisian philosopher and teacher, and Heloise was his gifted young student. Through their impassioned writings unfolds the story of a romance, from its reckless, ecstatic beginnings to the public scandal, enforced secret marriage, and devastating consequences that followed. These eloquent and intimate "Letters of Abelard and Heloise" express a vast range of emotions from adoration and devotion to reproach, indignation, and grief, and offer a fascinating insight into religious life in the Middle Ages. Their ardor is unmistakable; as Abelard writes to his love, "So intense were the fires of lust which bound me to you that I set those wretched, obscene pleasures, which we blush even to name, above God as above myself..." When their hidden marriage could no longer withstand the challenges in its path, each lover sought refuge in the church--Abelard became a monk and Heloise an abbess. Their correspondence continued as both achieved success in their new careers but continued to struggle with their feelings for one another. "The Letters of Abelard and Heloise" powerfully articulate the wide range of emotions they experienced. So timeless is their love story that--after eight centuries--their passion, their devotion, and their struggle still resonate with readers.

Roman Forum
In 1993 I packed my rucksack & traveled around Europe for a few months.
I was blown away at the age, history, heritage of many of the sights in Rome, but the Roman Forum was a highlight
This was shot on a very simple point & shoot 35mm camera, with no control over light, exposure or the like, I wish (as often) I had my DSLR with me then.
Back then I never really paid much attention to the negatives, & unfortunatly they have suffered a bit over the last 20 years or so.
I have done my best to clean them up. Hope you like it as much as I liked being there.
As always your comments are greatly appreciated.
From Wikipedia:
The Roman Forum (Latin: Forum Romanum, Italian: Foro Romano) is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum. It was for centuries the center of Roman public life: the site of triumphal processions and elections, venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches, and nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all history. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archeological excavations attracting numerous sightseers.
Many of the oldest and most important structures of the ancient city were located on or near the Forum. The Kingdom's earliest shrines and temples were located on the southeastern edge. These included the ancient former royal residence, the Regia (8th century BC), and the Temple of Vesta (7th century BC), as well as the surrounding complex of the Vestal Virgins, all of which were rebuilt after the rise of imperial Rome. Other archaic shrines to the northwest, such as the Umbilicus Urbis and the Vulcanal (Shrine of Vulcan), developed into the Republic's formal Comitium (assembly area). This is where the Senate — as well as Republican government itself — began. The Senate House, government offices, tribunals, temples, memorials and statues gradually cluttered the area. Over time the archaic Comitium was replaced by the larger adjacent Forum and the focus of judicial activity moved to the new Basilica Aemilia (179 BC). Some 130 years later, Julius Caesar built the Basilica Julia, along with the new Curia Julia, refocusing both the judicial offices and the Senate itself. This new Forum, in what proved to be its final form, then served as a revitalized city square where the people of Rome could gather for commercial, political, judicial and religious pursuits in ever greater numbers.
Eventually much economic and judicial business would transfer away from the Forum Romanum to the larger and more extravagant structures (Trajan's Forum and the Basilica Ulpia) to the north. The reign of Constantine the Great, during which the Empire was divided into its Eastern and Western halves, saw the construction of the last major expansion of the Forum complex — the Basilica of Maxentius (312 AD). This returned the political center to the Forum until the fall of the Western Roman Empire almost two centuries later.

FLOOR CLEANING SHOES - CLEANING SHOES
Floor cleaning shoes - Cleaning rust from tools.

Good Clean Fun
Admiral Lord Nelson famously said, "No captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy." The first lesson of the Infamous Girlie Cartoon Artists School is similar: that when devoid of any ideas for a cartoon, no artist can do very wrong if he places his surprised nudie cutie alongside a bathtub. Note that the hair remains perfectly coiffed--a girlie mag gag gal's hair only becomes wet and stringy (to match the angry look on her face) if she is interrupted at her bath to answer the knock of an annoying neighbor, a door-to-door salesman or an unwanted suitor. Note as well that the first thing a spicy humor hottie does when stepping out of the tub, even before reaching for her towel, is to step into her high heels. It is attention to these sort of details that separate the true artist from mere dilettantes such as Titian, Rubens, Ingres, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, et. al. I am perhaps indulging him because he is my favorite, but I feel these other so-called "masters" could have learned a thing or two from pinup pioneer Pierre-Auguste Renoir. No matter how much HIS bathers splashed around, THEIR hair was never wet (or, if it was, it was stylishly so), and if they were barefooted, one is inclined to believe it was not the result of any misplaced devotion to unnecessary realism on the part of the artist, but rather because high heels had simply not been invented yet. Finally, showing mademoiselle's derriere in the mirror is not de rigeur but it is de-lightful, and a trite title is an absolute must.

I've been tagged by HOOR, I changed the term hate to dislike.
10 things I dislike:
1.Ruts, I like change and I like trying new things and taking risks sometimes.
2.People who comment on everything, and think they know it all and their opinion is always right. Ugh.
3.Burns. The oven only lets it out on me for some reason, these days.
4.Being late.
5.Negativity.
6.Being forced into something and to be lead, or not being able to do something. I'm an independent person.
7.Unfairness. Oh how much I get irritated when someone is being unfair to a person.
8.When people throw their garbage on the floor or on the road, specially while they're driving. I just wish that I could give them a ticket.
9.Cooking smell when it gets stuck on me.
10.Mess.
One more dislike: Wasting this holy month of Ramadan on useless things.
I tag the 4 people added to this shot, and the first person who comments. =)
But I'll tell you what I do like right about now. The way the moon looks tonight, It is absolutely gorgeous, you guys go have a look. I posted a photo of it below, just in-case you're trapped inside or something.

Matilda asleep.
Matilda really gets irritated by the camera, moreso than usual as she is not well. She was showing signs of irritation when she wees, so I tested her urine on 21stJun2011 and it had blood in it and it was slightly alkaline which was causing her pain.
I buy my own strips from the chemist and test their wee whenever they show signs of discomfort. It has saved me a fortune in vet fees. I've put Matilda onto the "Deltameth" which is a urine acidifier. This removes any pain from urinating and stops any crystals forming (charlie is always having to go on it for fear of his penis getting blocked). Deltameth is non- from the vet, so I can get it over the counter.
All my cats this last week have shown signs of distress urinating. I didn't bother to test Josie. When I saw how she was weeing I just put her on the Deltameth. Matilda and Josie go outside, and the boys inside. I keep the kitty litters very clean, so I know it's not me causing it. I know not drinking enough from stress causes it. The boys inside are stressed because they are adapting to inside life. The girls are stressed from the neighbours dogs constantly barking when they go outside. It does upset them, and I think that's what has happened. What causes bladder infection I don't know except not drinking enough and holding their wee. I always have plenty of fresh water around.

After two Macincrashes (kernel panics) in about 4 hours last night, I think Parallels is the culprit...
My MacBook has seen better days. It's a tough old workhorse and has done
almost everything I've ever asked it to. Not too long ago, I was dealing
with almost daily instances of seeing the "International Screen of Death"
which is basically, Mac's answer to Windows' "Blue Screen of Death." It's
"international" because it asks you to restart in different languages.
Anyway, so I got some good advice to verify permissions and the hard drive
in Disk Utility. I did that and things cleared up. I also upgraded to Snow
Leopard which didn't seem to make things worse. Then, back in November of
'09, I experienced a couple ISDs (International Screen of Death) and noticed
that my main hard drive was listed as "failing" in Disk Utility. I prayed
to the Computer Gods that it wasn't a bad hard drive, but Disk Utility was
telling me it was. I thought about anything new I'd installed,
software-wise, that might be causing problems. I'd installed Parallels to
test out Windows 7, but that's all I could think of. I Googled around for
some answers after getting another ISD. Every forum thread I came across
had at least one or two posts explaining it was likely a hardware fault and
that I (or the original poster of the thread) should swap out that hard
drive ASAP. However, when I looked at their crash reports, I noticed most
of them mentioned having Parallels installed. I thought that was a little
bizarre, but I didn't have time to monkey around--I was in the middle of
National Novel Writing Month--I needed to fix solve my problem, FAST.
Luckily, I had a 500GB pocket drive I was using for backup that I was able
to wipe and swap for my MB's original system drive. I did a clean install
of Snow Leo and everything seemed to be fine. Eventually, I got around to
reinstalling Parallels (which I love) and soon after that, I started getting
the ISDs again. Not a lot, maybe once ever week or two. Then, yesterday I
got one. I sat down, verified permissions and verified the disk. Disk
Utility told me my hard drive need to be repaired. I pop in my OSX install
disc and repair the drive. All seemed fine. Then, at 4:18am this morning,
MACINCRASH. Ironically, I was backing up files at the time.
I restart, reset my backup and go to bed. Wake up today and
MACINCRASH--according to the clock on my screensaver, it happened a little
more than 2 hours after I went to bed.
:(
I Google with the phrase "cpu(s) failing to respond to interrupts" and find
a few different posts complaining about the same thing. Once again, virtual
machine apps are mentioned but most everyone seems to think these are still
hardware-related problems. The thing is, each original poster I came across
had Parallels installed. Some of them had Parallels AND another VM app,
like VMware or VirtualBox. It seems that any VM app installs a kernel
extension. I don't know what a "kernel extension" is, but seeing as both
waves of ISDs that I experienced this month and back in November came within
spitting distance of having installed Parallels, I decided it seemed very
likely to be the fault of a kernel extension. So, I decided to uninstall
Parallels.
So, that's where I am now. We'll see if the Macincrashes stop. I'd
understand if the ISDs came during crunching HD video. I'd understand if
they came while Parallels was running Win7 in Coherence mode (Coherence mode
ROCKS--I honestly LOVE Coherence mode!!), but the ISDs came randomly, while
converting files for iPod-playing or, as with last night, during backups.
These are not processor-intensive procedures and the odds of me having two
bad hard drives *in a row* seem slim.
As sad as I am to say good-bye to Parallels (Coherence mode really is
awesome!), I really hope this is the reason for my crashes. I really can't
afford a new laptop (or even a new HD) right now.

When You Don't Mind Hearing the Toilet (but don't really want to see it)
Today's theme is dressing rooms. The caption reads:
In this striking bath-dressing room, a white translucent panel separates the room into two areas: one for bathing; the other for shaving, applying makeup, and combing out coifs. The entire area can be shut off from the bedroom by simply pulling shut the folding wooden door, or the door can remain partially shut, allowing a glimpse of the wall lamps and gold-framed mirror beyond. In a room without an outside exposure, the effect of natural sunlight is particularly important and welcome. Here, a ceiling, well lit by fluorescent lamps behind plastic panels, seems to bring the daylight indoors. The dressing room's atmosphere of spacious and functional luxury is created by the thoughtful use of color and accessories. The warm rich tones of the master bedroom are echoed by the dressing room's accessories: the soft yellow of the fixtures, the natural wood of the cabinet, the burnt-orange of the soft rug, and the array of towels that repeat the colors of the bedspread, carpeting, and walls. Just a few carefully chosen accessories, and a bathroom vanity is transformed into lady's private, personal corner. Here, the metamorphosis is achieved by antique lamps, soap dishes tied with brass bows, a delicate vase, and a framed snapshop unexpectedly gracing the vanity top. Easily cleaned floors and compartmentalized cabinets reduce the housekeeping chores to a minimum in this graciously appointed dressing room.
Cleaning teeth - Day 342 of Project 365
24/07/09
It's always the last job of the day before I go to bed... can't think why I wouldn't have featured this before... oh yeh that's why, coz it's disgusting! ;P
This is he kind of shot a fisheye is made for ;)
lightroom: crop, rotate very slightly, white balance, use curves to nudge contrast, tweak brightness and contrast, brush tool to darken the hand holding the toothbrush, slight vignette (most is the natural falloff of the flash) sharpen, save to JPG
Strobist: 580exii on fired by TTL on TTL flash cord, the diffuser was a dozen or so sheets of toilet paper which filled the sink with, the only bit poking out was the lens, as I hoped its give a slight ring flash kind of look, although the catch lights in my eyes give away the odd shape.
