Desserts don't count on the weekends, right? It's Girl Scout Cookie season and there are at least three boxes of Thin Mints in my house right now. Naturally, it was only right that I crunched them up and put them on mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge.

Like I said...desserts don't count on the weekend, right? ;)

This Slow Churned stuff is actually pretty good. You hardly notice that it's a light ice cream at all. I also love that my ice cream scooper makes those perfect cylindrical shapes.

The U.S. Mission in Uganda is once again sponsoring a series of World AIDS Day events from November 17 to December 18 across Uganda. All Ugandans are invited to participate. These large community events will include a quiz show with the theme “Everybody wins when we know the facts about HIV and AIDS.” The events are part of the U.S. Mission’s ongoing commitment to working in partnership with Ugandans to defeat HIV and AIDS.

The traveling “Everybody Wins!” quiz show first goes to Kasese and Kabale on November 17 and 19. Members of the community will be contestants and could win valuable prizes like free cell phones, MTN airtime cards, Total gas cookers, and aluminum water containers. 1,000 members of each community will take home a free World AIDS Day shirt. Everyone will learn the facts about HIV and AIDS that they can use to keep themselves, and their families, healthier. In addition, U.S. Peace Corps volunteers will lead Life Skills workshops for young people.

The “Everybody Wins!” quiz show then travels to Mityana for World AIDS Day on December 1. U.S. Ambassador Jerry P. Lanier will lead this event, highlighting the U.S. commitment to Uganda’s future. From there, the event travels to Arua and Soroti on December 8 and 11, then Hoima and Masindi on December 16 and 18.

Corporate sponsors of the seven events include MTN, Total, and Coca-cola. The U.S. Mission will again partner with The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) and local district leaders and other civil society organizations in each area. The events will reach an estimated audience of over 37,000 people from all age groups and walks of life.

The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is perhaps the largest overseas commitment in health ever made by the United States. The U.S. is committed to support Ugandans in their fight against HIV and AIDS. On World AIDS Day 2010, the American people recommit themselves to the fight.

Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving.

The large American presence in Korea--military and otherwise--has generated a significant demand for Thanksgiving goods and services. Some restaurants serve special Thanksgiving Day buffets, some even deliver a cooked turkey with all the fixings. The demand for such food is high, and the supply is rather low; turkey is somewhat a mystery meat in Korea. Instead of splurging on an expensive dinner, we opted for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and carrots. There's nothing like a meal cooked with one burner and a rice cooker.

From left to right, we have: the Baby Jesus doll used in my senior project production of The People vs. Jesus Christ, sitting in my old Sesame Street Library book-holder, with a stress-ball from some random Internet startup in his lap, a rubber glove on his head (also from the show), and one of his arms missing (stolen by one of the castmembers of the show); a blue whale given to me as part of a mixed drink of the same name that I drank while on the Bradford College Class of 99 Bar Crawl; a plastic dinosaur; the Cookie Monster doll I received as a gift for my first Christmas; the bean-bag frog I sewed in a middle-school home economics class; the Chip doll I got when my family and I went to Disney World for the first time; the pillow that I sewed in that same home economics class, which I didn't enjoy nearly as much as might be sested by the fact that I still have these two things; and a windmill built out of a Sunny Delight bottle and a Mug root beer can by Stephanie's great-grandfather.

hard cooking - JOY OF

JOY OF COOKING

JOY OF COOKING

Joy is the all-purpose cookbook. There are other basic cookbooks on the market, and there are fine specialty cookbooks, but no other cookbook includes such a complete range of recipes in every category: everyday, classic, foreign and de luxe. Joy is the one indispensable cookbook, a boon to the beginner, treasure for the experienced cook, the foundation of many a happy kitchen and many a happy home.
Privately printed in 1931, Joy has always been family affair, and like a family it has grown. Written by Irma Starkloff Rombauer, a St. Louisan, it was first tested and illustrated by her daughter, Marion Rombauer Becker, and subsequently it was revised and enlarged through Marion's efforts and those of her architect husband, John W. Becker. Their sons -- Ethan, with his Cordon Bleu and camping experiences, and Mark, with his interest in natural foods-have reinforced Joy in many ways.
Now over forty, Joy continues to be a family affair, demonstrating more than ever the awareness we all share in the growing preciousness of food. Special features in this edition are the chapter on Heat, which gives you many hints on maintaining the nutrients in the food you are cooking, and Know Your Ingredients, which reveals vital characteristics of the materials you commonly combine, telling how and why they react as they do; how to measure them; when feasible, how to substitute one for another; as well as amounts to buy. Wherever possible, information also appears at the point of use.
Divided into three parts, Foods We Eat, Foods We Heat and Foods We Keep, Joy now contains more than 4500 recipes, many hundreds of them new to this edition -- the first full revision in twelve years. All the enduring favorites will still be found. In the chapter on Brunch, Lunch and Supper Dishes there are also interesting sestions for using convenience and leftover foods. Through its more than 1000 practical, delightful drawings by Ginnie Hofmann and Ikki Matsumoto, Joy shows how to present food correctly and charmingly, from the simplest to the most formal service; how to prepare ingredients with classic tools and techniques; and how to preserve safely the results of your canning and freezing.
Joy grows with the times; it has a full roster of American and foreign dishes: Strudel, Zabaglione, Rijsttafel, Couscous, among many others. All the classic terms you find on menus, such as Provencale, bonne femme, meuniere and Florentine, are not merely defined but fully explained so you yourself can confect the dish they characterize. Throughout the book the whys and wherefores of the directions are given, with special emphasis on that vital cooking factor -- heat. Did you know that even the temperature of an ingredient can make or mar your best-laid plans? Learn exactly what the results of simmering, blanching, roasting and braising have on your efforts. Read the enlarged discussion on herbs, spices and seasonings, and note that their use is included in suitable amounts in the recipes. No detail necessary to your success in cooking has been omitted.
Joy, we hope, will always remain essentially a family affair, as well as an enterprise in which its authors owe no obligation to anyone but to themselves and to you. Choose from our offerings what suits your person, your way of life, your pleasure -- and join us in the Joy of cooking.
Because of the infinite patience that has gone into the preparation of Joy of Cooking, the publishers offer it on a money-back guarantee. Without question there is no finer all-purpose cookbook.

Since its first private printing in 1931, The Joy of Cooking has been teaching Americans how to cook. Craig Claiborne calls it "a masterpiece of clarity" and Julia Child says it's the one book she'd keep if she could only have one English title on the shelf. The nearly 5,000 recipes are handily organized by meal and ingredient, and no cooking instruction goes unexplained, so you can finally understand the difference between poaching and braising. The book includes nutritional information as well as an extremely helpful list of measures and equivalents. You'll find a version of every recipe your mother ever cooked, along with straightforward instructions for cooking more exotic specialties such as turtles and muskrats.

Cider, Hard and Sweet: History, Traditions, and Making Your Own (Second Edition)

A fully updated and expanded primer for anyone who wants to make cider and for those who just like to drink it.
With the rise in consumer demand for local foods and local food products, and the emergence of more small craft food and beverage producers since this book was originally published in 2000, this revised edition of Cider, Hard and Sweet comes at the right time.

Watson's expanded the section on the history of cider to chronicle lesser-known cider producers such as those in Spain and Asia; broadened the selection of North American cider varieties and European cider apple varieties; provided new cidermaking basics tailored to beginner and intermediate cidermakers with special attention to the new cidermaking equipment available; added new recipes for cooking with cider from notable chefs and bartenders; and added a new chapter about the recent popularity of perry (pear cider) available for purchase today. 50 black-and-white photographs

Slack-My-Girdle. Never has a fruit been better named. It's an apple, in this case, favored in Devonshire, England, by apple cider makers. A few pints of their good cider and you may want to slack your girdle, too. Crack the cover of Ben Watson's Cider, Hard and Sweet and you may find yourself planting apple trees against the day you too can fill your basement with jugs of fermenting apple juice. You would be following in a long, long tradition.
Watson's history of cider starts with the apple itself in the Tien-Shan mountains of far off Kazakstan. Alma-Ata, formerly the Kazak capital, translates as "father of apples." There have been a number of apple-centric books published of late, all of them echoing similar historic details. Watson distinguishes himself by focusing on the place of cider--the alcoholic beverage--in human history, particularly American history. "In 1726," the author tells us, "it was reported that a single village near Boston, consisting of about 40 families, put up nearly 10,000 barrels of cider. One historian stated that in the year 1767 a per capita average of 1.14 barrels of cider were consumed in Massachusetts." That'd be 35 gallons per person!
The arrival of breweries and brewers with German and eastern European immigration in the late 1800s, the codling moth, the exodus from farm to city of the majority American population, Prohibition, bad winters--all these factors and more led to the decline of cider making in America. A few farmers continued in the tradition; everyone else made and sold apple juice and called it cider. The tradition hung on in Britain and Europe, however, and new American cider makers are taking advantage of this living body of knowledge, planting European cider apples and trying some of the old varieties still available in this country. A book such as Cider will encourage the movement.
Watson gives clear instructions to get the cider enthusiast started, and then fills in with the kind of details that push the beginner deeper into the subject, deeper into the skills and legacy. A valuable resource for anyone interested in giving cider making a go, Cider, Hard and Sweet will be just as useful to anyone who has discovered the delicious world of cider, and wants to know more. --Schuyler Ingle

Oatmeal

I only discovered oatmeal within the last year — I had never had it before. Now I eat it almost every day (obsessed) but so far I'm the only person I know of who doesn't like it sweet. I put nutritional yeast on it instead and it's awesome. I also apparently like it a lot drier than most people.

One Eyed People Cry Twice

One Eyed People Cry Twice

Of white picket prisons
and sham tear-jerk churches:
the paperwork nation,
fed weekends by an iron fist (the invisible hand)
on a stomach full of butterflies and pharmaceuticals
in a space painted gray by faith
where if everyone thought differently you would think the same, so
the cookie cutter suburbs have won
with billboards for horse blinders
window shopping for fig leaves
for a life that moves under glass, we
we turn trees into telephone poles
while cursing the birds for chirping,
their songs drowned out by a procession of dinosaurs
on the highways wider,
for the disposable home
god, what blind pride must we have to sleep this dream?

And amended, we run slowly like under water, like in dreams from authority, by apologizing for politics
for the confines of this dream are lined by:
the gone pinecones and black bear,
the aborigine; Mount Rushmore is trespassing appeased with a bottle.
the theft of africa; our civilization takes itself for quarantinebut
the white man's burden, it is the ego of Rome
spreading literacy here
and the electric chair

and so, running slowly we are, pouring water over the heads of everyone across
fifty lands attached by tumbleweed
that prays for cowboys.
So give me the biggest city
or the patchwork ocean of waving prairies,
the old and elderly in the south - doors ajar on a front porch in July where the locust roars in the
cattails and the moon is smeared with the butts of lightning bugs.
Take me to the end of property, out in Big Sur, where for once our past precedes us
And meet me Henry Ford, to shake his hand on Highway One, but punch him on the Seventy
See me Ansel, the western blood-shot reds of the canyons blown open
by the artery of the Colorado
A road runs through it
to the clay and craw-deads of the Ozark,
to the dripping hemlocks of the Carolinas: built to the thump of bluegrass.
Smell me the log fires in long autumns of the northeast; the leaves turn in the smoke of early night.
Slide me down the river Huck, free and easy, on the Mississippi, and Bingham paint me
with furs to bring to the ports of New Orleans
for chance is cheap.
Then look back, Kerouac, across your groaning country and wrap a clicking tongue like jazz
around the gone roads of San Francisco
when at your back the sun slopes (for the world the day is done),
left for you a watercolor sky;
left for the cobblestone of the east
and in between the "if" for us

Because have you ever swept the empty street of this dream, where we have invented rock and roll?
Where thousands of evicted religious came with their versions of hell and pointed finger.
Where the Big Dipper dumps crickets into the Grand Canyon at night
Where we, the leavers, given the weight of the road, create sounds like the Blues,
Bittersweet and sea sick tumbling on a closing frontier
with an amnesia in our slumbers....
If we ever woke up would we be reconciled?
