IMG 4193 I found in my Dremel toolbox a bullet-shaped polishing bit, and like all my polishing bits, it had never been used. Here was the perfect need for them, at last. The black there is removed metal, mostly oxidized. I found as well the red polishing compound, which has an extremely fine grit to it, and it went through the rust pretty readily, and imparted a nice sheen to the metal. Here, the right rail hs been polished up a bit, and the left has not. I know it's hard to tell, but I could sure feel it with my fingertips. At some point, this bullet exploded from the Dremel tip, making a mess of floaty white fibers, but I just switched up to the large white fiber wheel attachment, and kept going until it was all sleek, front and back. So what they do is rent the cheap chain motel rooms and have party. How smart! (a bit more expensive hotel gets all the truck drivers and what they order...I mean, er, old, er, ladies, er...) + A terribly drunk teenagers, drinking and smoking all over the place. + A terribly yaking shouting adult while males with few women. Partying. + Few hobos? moving in between party rooms. Manager is also pretty much in tune with locals (I mean, he is a local.) So he goes, - No we have to provide ash trays in no-smoking rooms - with no-smoke sign labeled - because those people will smoke ANYWAY - whichever room they are in - and if they don't have ash tray, they would dump their cigarettes on the carpet. - So wait a minute, you don't - ask your customers - whether they want smoking room or non-smoking room - and say, usually, if it's non-smoking and if they smoke there, they get fined - for cleaning up. You don't do that? You don't ask people which room they want - whether smoking or non-smoking? And seems this was something entirely beyond what he/manager could comprehend. *I wonder what's the history of this place. Farms. Then farming declined? And then - small suburbs - (when trains made it into Edison/South Plainfield? for what reason?) And then either immigrants or vast shopping malls - came. Partying people in this cheap motel were all white, probably grand sons and grand daughters of farmers. Probably because there is nothing to do after 5 for them. And America's history or this town's history will indicate - how that happened. Someday these party habits may come to an end. Because it's too silly. But it may last. I wonder how to think about this. Irish was poor - to the bottom. esp potato famine and stuff. But then I was also told that they've been drinking real hard for generations. We witnessed that in that misty Sunset in San Francisco. How they still gather, how every day they get drunk. If you were real poor you can't drink. You have to eat first. And at some point, you start to make money to some degree but also get stuck with drinking and partying etc. And. And what? There is no answer written by Americans who committed to secularism (and pluralism ) - Thomas Jefferson and etc - had - had enough affluence to be optimistic about leaving organized religions - and working and implementing each steps of 'progress'. They haven't seen how modern routine and speed of events can trap people, lid people and keep them in such status - over generations - even in modern world. And there is the other side, Americans who didn't leave religions or did make a commitment to religion - Christianity, protestant - or catholic and many other variations - either way. This latter camp seems to have more to say about problem of drinking, problem of males, problem of community etc. How it can be degenerating, how it can be going down and stuck. (but I do doubt, they are really aware of hell like situations in parts of this USA continent.) I mostly see the problem on Secular side. They really didn't have any programs. Only program by so far I heard was Jefferson's one. Pick 10 out of minorities and give them same education which protestant or secular elites get. Top educations for most talented and potentful from those minorities or less affluent. We do that every year. That would change - do the Osmosis - Richard Feynman - had same kind of idea or vision for making change to happen - and our pluralist society would flourish - it would. It would become a beautiful place. What went wrong. And what really happened. We need to get these enquiries worked on - apart from loyalties and attachments we have for each camps and leanings. Champa Ruins, My Son, Hoi An, Vietnam (panorama) My Son is a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Hindu temples constructed between the 4th and the 14th century A.D. by the kings of Champa. The My Son Temples lay in a valley approximately 2 kilometres wide. From the 4th to the 14th century A.D., the valley at My Son was a site of religious ceremony for kings of the ruling dynasties of Champa, as well as a burial place for Cham royalty and national heroes. At one time, the site encompassed over 70 temples as well as numerous stele bearing historically important inscriptions in Sanskrit and Cham. (The erection of steles was inspired by buddhist civilisations such as the Cham and was eventually popularised in China. Steles (or Stelae) consisted of rectangular stone tablets usually inscribed with a funerary, commemorative, edifying text or other engravings). In 1937, French scholars began to restore the temples at My Son. In 1937 and 1938, the main temple known as "A1" and the smaller temples surrounding it were restored. Other major temples were restored between 1939 and 1943. However, many historical buildings were destroyed during the Vietnam War. United States B-52 aircraft carpet-bombed the region in August 1969. The surrounding area is still rendered dangerous through the presence of unexploded land mines. As you walk the area, there are some restoration efforts that have evidently been put on hold due to the presence of landmines - it is kind of eerie walking the paths past these individual temple sites. Some of the temples in the area were extensively hit during the Vietnam War by B-52 Bombers. Evidence of the destructive power of the payloads is prominent in some areas of the temple complex, with some temples being supported by scaffolding and 'temporary' roofing to protect it from the tropical storms that could easily collapse the bomb damaged temples. Shrapnel scars are evident around the complex as are large bomb craters. In fact, there is one just out of shot to the lower right of this photo. As of 1999, My Son has been recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Due to being an example of evolution and change in culture, and as evidence of an Asian civilisation which is now extinct. To this day, the construction method used to build these temples it is not entirely understood - especially relating to the 'mortar' used between the bricks, as there is no evidence supporting that mortar was used at all. Some suggest that a mortar was made using the same red clay used for the bricks, others suggest that a local tree resin was used but no one knows with any certainty. Anyway, this is one of my early stitch jobs done by hand years ago. Took a month of sundays to complete but worth it. Thankfully the process can be done a little more automatically these days. I may re-upload the image with a cleaner version given the opportunity. After the teeth are cleaned, a session of spitting water out into the sink takes place. After breakfast and the children start off to school, leaving Highfield through the main gates, one of the pet cats scampers around the main enterance, and will possibly go into the road that runs past the Home, getting get run over while the children are at school. The children are all in their school uniforms. One of the small boys is wearing long trousers due to having an amputated leg (Robert Steadman). For most even if it is a fine summer day a raincoat is to be worn. A shower at the end of the day and the children will still be walking back to the Home, so in Sister's mind it is best to be dressed for any weather. The children walk and play as they make the journey to school, a matter that would be questioned if Sister was to see this action. Day 56~My Trip to the Dentist When I had my last teeth-cleaning, they found 2 cavities between two of my front teeth. I had an appointment for today, the first weekday after returning from Vegas. In addition, last Thursday night in Vegas, a part of a tooth--filled many years ago--broke off. Today the dentist filed off the edge of the broken tooth, filled the two front teeth, and took x-rays of the broken tooth for the insurance request for a crown. My next appointment for the crown is in September. If they have a cancellation, they'll call me. 106/365 We only have a couple of days left of these bricks in our yard. On Monday, we have work starting, which consists of tearing up all the old street pavers and having concrete poured. Bought these sandals today, while I was out to buy a hardwood floor cleaning kit. We've had two Swiffers die on us because they would get clogged and just stopped working. I have the Method Mop with the microfiber pads, which I happen to really like; however, I've replaced the mop twice since it cracks at the base. Currently it is duct taped to keep the mop head on. I'll still use that for the kitchen and bathrooms, but I just bought a Bona mop for the hardwood floors. I tried it out today and so far really like it. It seems pretty sturdy, and I like that the microfiber cleaning pads can be machine washed (like the Method pads). They are also bigger than the mop head, so they can really clean along the baseboards well. Keeping up with the floors in my house is my most hated job, so I'm always looking for ways to make it easier. Litter in boxes and bags has also been placed beside the clothing containers and has to be removed by Armagh District Council at a cost to the taxpayer as visitors to the Cathedral and also local residents have complained. Cleaner Kitchen - A I certainly made progress on the kitchen. I managed to wash all the dishes that we're hidden in plain sight and cleaned out the fridge -- one nice thing about making Ethiopian food and having leftovers is that it's spiced so well that it can hide in the back of the fridge for weeks and not get scary. I still need to clean the floor, but at least the compost bin is emptied and washed and all the camping/pdf dishes are clean. Kitchen Photo This winterization work order also requested a "ready-to-show" inspection which is nothing more than evaluating the work done by the realtor to have the property spic-and-span ready for showing. An excellent job was done and this picture was taken to show just how clean and shiny the kitchen was. Jay Property ABC's of Contaminants: Anthracene, Barium, Chrysene, DDT Running off into Greenhaven, Rye C1- Dump next to Greenhaven behind Tennis House and John Jay Place, Rye C-2 Dump behind parking lot and next to West Creek These soil results were alarming and reflect testing of 2 dumps at the Jay Property in Rye, NY that have been unremediated since 1992 when Westchester County Parks acquired the parcel. Contaminants like the ones above compromise human health, saftey of our water and wildlife that are more sensitive to such toxins. All results highlighted in green exceed the objectives for Residential use. Close inspection and comparison of levels that effect native fauna shows an extraordinarily high level of chlordane that should concern conservationists and bird lovers in Westchester. We're glad that these soil reports helped prompt the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)'s investigation of the site. DEC is ordering cleanup of these dumps brought to their attention by the Jay Heritage Center and the new administration of Westchester County has pledged to rectify this issue. DEC returned on May 4th to complete investigation of areas hidden by "vegetation" and overgrowth of invasives where runoff from these pollutants may be entering Long Island Sound. Heavy rains in the area have mobilized the contaminants and everyone agrees that the situation must be remedied at this National Historic Landmark site and home of NY Founding Father, John Jay. Otober 7, 2008 Day 4. So I ended up taking this photo earlier in the day not knowing that it would be perfect for todays disasters. I started today with cleaning out the closet that shares the walls with my shower (you know the recently destroyed and rebuilt one) thinking that I would get everything out, take out the shelves and be able to get the wall prepped for some new plaster to repair the damage to it. Well luck would have it that when I took everything out, the damage was quite a bit more extensive. An entire wall of plaster had to come down..... actually it almost came down all on it's own. A small part of the ceiling came off causing more debris from the inside of the ceiling to come down and make a mess of that space and my shop..... AGAIN. Then the six layers of floor on top of the old sub-floor had to come up because moisture had gotten under there as well. A real mess and several hours of demo and clean up. So then (that's right it's not over) I decide to go down to my shop (below the closet/bathroom) and get a little work done on some woodworking projects. All is going pretty well until my thickness planer (one of my very used and important tools) starts making this small banging and clicking sound....... Time to take it apart and grease the drive chain. I'm thinking "At least I know how to fix this". While I am fixing it and running it to make sure all the parts are moving they way they should before I put everything back together, my screwdriver gets caught in the chain drive and "SNAP" goes one of the drive cogs. FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!! Sure enough...... the part is not made anymore and I need it right away. So as I am sitting here thinking that I really need to get this problem fixed but it's a big expensive tool and I really don't need to be dealing with this right now I think to myself "Well..... at least I have a photo now". Then, I noticed the wet carpet in my bedroom. Then I noticed the bathrooms were filthy. As was the kitchen. This was the tipping point to my frustration. Just the thoughts of having to clean up someone's else's filth?!?!? I hate, and I do mean hate, cleaning up my own filth so this just sent me into a blubbering mess anytime I thought about it. Yes, I know. Dramatic much? Pretty spoiled princess much? We all have our moments. This was mine. So, my Mom and my Dad and my sister called me during the days to see how I was doing with everything. Mom kept offering to send Dad. "No, I'm fine. I'll be fine. Don't do that." My sister kept saying "I can come down if you need me." And I kept saying the same thing "No, I'm fine. I'll be fine. Don't do that." She did it anyway. And I love her for it. I love her for not listening to me. I love her for knowing me. I love her for cleaning up other people's filth for me so I can get my new pad organized so my mind can begin to settle down a bit. I love that my bathrooms are now shiny and clean and usable. I love that I now have a functional kitchen. With groceries. And clean counters. I love that she fixed the cabinets that were crooked. Or wouldn't shut properly. I love that she can open a can of chili with a hammer and a screwdriver. I love that she was able to move the oven so I could get it plugged up so I can bake brownies for breakfast. She was awesome. She is awesome. My apartment looks so put together and it's because of her. I honestly think I would have just sat around and cried all day if I'd had to clean all that skank on my own. Sophia and I just come inside from the garden with a bouquet of flowers for David. n addition to all of her sweetness today, Sophia also took her cup of water mixed with chlorella and spit it all over the living room floor, carpet, walls, the kitchen floor, and a brand new piece of fabric that I had left in her reach. Once her water was done, she called out to me (I was doing the dishes) "Oh no! Mama come-a-look!" We told her that she wasn't to spit out her water, and that now we would clean it up, and she said "Oh sorry Mama" and then insisted on having her own towel to help clean up. Next, she came tearing gleefully into the living room with a soaking wet face cloth, dripping toilet water everywhere and saying "in a toilet! in a toilet!" Oh what a delightful age! I really, truly, honestly, can not feel upset with her because I can see so clearly how much she is enjoying her experimentation. In Memory of Ana It was Thursday, Dec 18th, 2008. I'd spent the past three months working on a little software project for converting eBooks from one format to another; it was meant to be a Christmas gift for my wife. I was way behind schedule. There were a lot of friends I was hoping to see over those holidays, but I just didn't seem to have time. For one friend, who I hadn't seen nearly enough of that year, I made time. I met Ana for lunch at Fratelli's in Westboro, an Italian place I knew she liked. I told her about my project. Ana said, "I'm working on a project too, I'm doing database work. Do you have a database yet? I'll do your database for you when I get back from my vacation. Ooh ooh ooh! We have to come up with a name. That's the first thing we should do, come up with a name. No? You have a name? I don't think that's a good name. Don't worry, we'll come up with a better name." Ana was as excited about this as I was. It was hard to get a word in edgewise. I suggested "We should quit our day jobs, make a startup of it." On the one hand, it wasn't really a serious offer; it wouldn't have made financial sense for either one of us, and Anne Marie, my wife, would have been furious with me. On the other hand, if she had said yes... I would have quit my job in a heartbeat. Ana and I first met three years ago at Alcatel. We worked together there for a year, although it seems crazy that it could have been only a year. Ana and I took an instant liking to each other. It was no secret we were close friends; I'm sure to most people in the office we seemed almost inseparable. We'd walk into the lab together, and Luc would say "Have you two been surgically joined at the hip yet?" Ana and I actually both came down with matching wisdom tooth infections at the same time, mine on the upper left, hers on the upper right. Working with Ana was amazing. We'd sequester ourselves away in a meeting room, sometimes for a couple of days, with a laptop and a projector, covering the walls in UML diagrams. When it came time to write class interfaces, we'd do it together, dictating to each other. That sort of "pair programming" was something I never thought I'd like, but with Ana it seemed so natural, such a joy. We'd divide the world in half, each go implement our part of the system, we'd get back together a few days later, plug it all together, and it all just worked, every time. It was magic. It was like the fairytale storybook version of Computer Science. No problem was unsolvable, no project too big, not for the two of us. Our strengths seemed to compliment each other so well. There was many a time when Ana's almost herculean ability to organize kept us on track, where my own child-with-ADD-like organization would have led us astray. I've heard more than one person say they'll always remember the long conversations they had with Ana. For me, those conversations happened on our daily bike ride home. Some days the only reason I woke up in the morning and went to work was so I could bike home with Ana in the evening. That was the best part of every day. She was a brilliant woman and no matter where the subject strayed, from ancient cultures to astrophysics, she always had something interesting to say. Often we'd get to the fork in the bike path, where I was supposed to go one way and she the other, and we'd just stop there and keep on chatting, road hazards to the other cyclists. I often told Ana I wouldn't trade those evening rides for all the world. On one of those rides home, Ana shared a story with me, that I'd like to share with all of you. As a young girl in Serbia, Ana of course had a bicycle; a bright yellow Peugot that was given to her by her father, expensive and somewhat difficult to even get in the country at that time. Ana loved that bike. Whenever she rode it, she'd bring it home and clean it. She kept it looking spotless. One day, Ana was out riding with a friend, and they came upon a group of older boys, essentially local bullies. One of them lept up onto Ana's bike, between her and the handle bars. He turned to her, and said "I'm going to steal your bike." Ana? She said "No you're not!" She threw herself at him; wrapped her arms around him so she couldn't be thrown off. Ana's friend went for help, but even had she stayed Ana was hopelessly outnumbered. The bullies peeled her off their friend, and I'm sorry to say they made off with Ana's bike. Ana said this had taught her not to worry about mere physical possessions. It's all just stuff, and anyone can take it from you at any time, so there's no point in caring about it. I remember thinking this was an amazing story and I almost couldn't believe it. More, I couldn't believe she'd told it to me when all I'd asked was "When was the last time you cleaned that bike chain?" I share this story with you because it demonstrates some of the values I admi Bike Rental Place This is a bike rental place. One of the joys of cycling along the beach is getting sand all over your bike chain. So I bought a special device and some cleaner stuff, to clean my chain. (It's a bit of a gimmick - the chain goes through a machine that brushes it and wipes it, but the gunge collects in the device, and doesn't spray all over the floor which makes S shout at me). Anyway, I bought the device, degreaser (biodegradable, natch) and cleaned and degreased my chain and made it all nice. And then I couldn't find the oil I'd bought. So I started riding to work and it made a disgusting grinding scraping sound ('cos even my lovely device couldn't get all the sand off it). I went to this bike place, and asked if he'd sell me some oil - he handed me a can, and I asked him how much. He said just spray my chain and give it back. So I did. There are so many bike hire places that I pass that I wondered if I could get away with never buying oil, once a week or so I would go to another rental place and get another squirt of oil. By the time I'd done them all, the first place will have forgotten. However, if I ever rent a bike, it's going tobe from this place, so that squirt of oil will be paid back, massively.
