Holbourn Island @ Bowen Sunrise Coral Seas Bermuda Triangle WORTH A READ :--)) an item by Daniel Bateman from the Townsville Bulletin with their permission DANIEL BATEMAN June 6th, 2009 THE sinking of the Yongala, the disappearance of the Kaz II crew – is an island off the coast of Bowen to blame for these and many more of the North's maritime mysteries? Holbourne Island is a popular fishing spot, about 35km off Bowen. It could almost be known as the `Bermuda Triangle' of North Queensland. The island was named by Captain James Cook after a naval officer who commanded the North American fleet in 1757. It consists mostly of granite and is surrounded by coral reef. It was dedicated as a national park in 1982. From the late 19th century to the present day, the island has been implicated in a series of unfortunate maritime incidents, including some very famous shipwrecks. The SS Gothenburg, a steamship that operated along Australia's coastline, left Darwin in February 1875 on its way to Adelaide. About 100 crew members were killed when it strayed into a cyclone and became wrecked on reef northwest of Holbourne Island. Twenty-two of the crew survived the disaster, and managed to reach the island where they were rescued several days later. There was nothing particularly mysterious about that disaster, but the really strange stuff started when the SS Yongala went missing, 36 years later. The Yongala left Mackay on March 23, 1911 at 1.30pm but never reached port in Townsville. It steamed into a cyclone and sank without a trace. However, the cause of the sinking remains a mystery. All 122 passengers and crew on board perished. The wreck was not discovered until 1958, about 48 nautical miles southeast of Townsville, and it has since become one of the world's best dive sites. However, in 1923, 12 years after the Yongala vanished, a group of fishers from Bowen were angling off Holbourne in a small boat, near the main shipping channel the Yongala would have used. Much to their surprise, a large steam ship appeared from the south. The fishermen recognised her instantly. It was the Yongala, and the anglers watched – mouths agape – as the vessel steamed off behind the island, failing to appear on the other side. Then there's the strange case of Kaz II, the North's own modern-day Mary Celeste. The 10.6m catamaran was discovered empty and drifting off Townsville on April 18, 2007. The three men on board the Western Australia-bound yacht – Des Batten, 56, neighbour Peter Tunstead, 69, and his brother Jim, 63 – were officially declared dead following a week-long coronial inquest in Townsville last August. State Coroner Michael Barnes came to the conclusion the men fell into the sea while attempting to rescue each other. When Kaz II's GPS log was recovered, the investigators found the computer had overridden entries of the first day, due to a limited memory. The first entry on the log? None other than Holbourne Island. Fast forward to January 21, 2008, when the fishing boat Allena was sailing off Bowen. About 9pm, the radar mysteriously stopped working. Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigators were told the Allena's skipper attempted to turn it off and on several times, but it failed to restart. The unit was left switched off, and the boat was left to rely on its skipper as a lookout, who unfortunately became distracted by tallying up the evening's catch. An hour later, merchant ship Northern Fortune swiped the Allena, pulverising its bow in the process. Fortunately, the small boat was able to limp home to Bowen harbour, safely depositing all five crew members. The location of the incident? Southeast of Holbourne Island. Townsville Maritime Museum curator Vivianne Moran said the island's association with so many maritime incidents was spooky. "It's like the Bermuda Triangle," Ms Moran said. "Ships come to that spot, or that general location, and things happen. Holbourne Island would be the only witness." She said the island was a reminder of just how much mystery there was out at sea. Glasshouse Mountains can be seen from Caloundra On May 17, 1770 Captain James Cook (a rather perceptive fellow) wrote the following in his journal: These hills lie but a little way inland, and not far from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glass house, and for this reason I called them Glass Houses. The Glasshouse Mountains are a series of steep-sided volcanic plugs which dominate the landscape of the Sunshine coast Hinterland. According to science, they were formed of rhylite and trachtyte, lavas which hardened inside the vents of teritiary volcanoes that have been greatly reduced by about 25 million years of erosion. The real locals have a different story to tell (see history). Anytime of the year is a great time to bushwalk or picnic in the beautiful Glasshouse Mountain National Park. The mountains are located 31 kilometres from Brisbane and are approximately 30 minute drive North. The population of permanent residents is 715. History According to Aboriginal legend, Tibrogargan (364 m high), the father and Beerwah (555 m highest peak) the mother, had a number of children. Coonowrin (377 m high narrowest and most dramatic of all the volcanic plugs) was the eldest, Tunbubudla were the twins (293 m and 312 m), Coochin (235 m), Ngungun (253 m), Tibberoowuccum (220 m), Miketeebumulgrai (199 m) and Elimbah (129 m). The legend tells of Tibrogargan noticing that the sea was rising and calling out to Coonowrin to help his pregnant mother gather the young children together so that the family could flee from the rising sea. Coonowrin ran away in fear and Tibrogargan, incensed by his son's cowardice, followed and hit him so hard with a club that his neck was dislocated. When the seas retreated the family returned to the plains. Conowrin, teased about his crooked neck and ashamed of his behaviour, went to Tibrogargan and asked for forgiveness but the father just wept with shame. Conowrin then approached his brothers and sisters to ask forgiveness but they too could only weep with shame, thus explaining the area's many small streams. Tibrogargan then called Conowrin and asked why he had failed to help Beerwah. He explained that he felt she was big enough to look after herself, though he did not know she was pregnant. Tibrogargan then turned his back on his son and still gazes out to sea today, refusing to look at his son who forever hangs his crooked neck and cries. Beerwah, the mother, is still pregnant, as it takes time to give birth to a mountain. Captain James Cook was the first European to see the mountains. On May 17, 1770 he wrote in his journal These hills lie but a little way inland, and not far from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glass house, and for this reason I called them Glass Houses. Matthew Flinders was the next European to visit the area in 1799. During his explorations he came ashore and climbed Mount Beerburrum from which he surveyed the whole of Moreton Bay. the cookie that lived 365#279 odc~ through a hole It is the time of year when ghosts roam the streets and demand to be fed with candy or they would scare us to death, when elves get busy making sweets and building toys for good children everywhere from their north pole workshop and when an a jolly old man in a red suit is waking up and getting ready to saddle his reindeer and to ride his carriage in the skies of the planet delivering gifts and fulfilling the lists of little children, the time when cookie people are not all just cookies. Some of these cookies will escape and go to cookie land before they get colored silly and eaten. I love these fantastical stories we grow up with but is it any wonder our children think twice before blindly believing everything we say? Cookies I work with a girl that only shops at Trader Joe's, Sprouts, and Sunflower. She knows of my love of the Oreos and talked me into buying a healthier alternative. They don't taste the same as an Oreo, of course, but they are a nice alternative, and I can feel good that I'm putting less junk into my body while not giving up cookies. And while most everyone is watching some football game that I see listed on my calendar (seriously, on my calendar "Super Bowl Sunday" is pre-printed on it as if it is a holiday!) I'll sneak to the gym and have it all to myself. Huzzah! Thirty Seven My aunt and uncle had Super Bowl Party, so being a good niece I went to join in the festivities. Mainly for their company but also for the food and adult beverages. Instead of watching the first half of the game I went to watch Lady and the Tramp with my cousin. I'm a Disney Movie Closet Junkie. I fell asleep at one point and woke up just in time for the half time show. I really kinda wished I had stayed asleep. I wasn't impressed at all. But I was diggin that human heart thing they had going on. I don't really know how else to describe it. When I went to the store to pick up a dessert I saw the Girl Scout cookie stand. On my way out I bought my one box of Peanut Butter Patties for $3.50. I can only allow myself one box because there was one time when I ate through three boxes...in just less then a week. Lets just say I never did that again. These cookies made my day. I needed this...whatever this is. All the days in these first weeks with my new baby seem magical. But a girl has got to eat. I know my way around a kitchen, and of course as farmers we have a very well-stocked larder. But this new little person needs me almost every minute, and doesn't nap regularly enough yet that I have a schedule to my days, and I'm still figuring it all out. Happily, but also a bit haphazardly. Suggestions? I want food that is SUPER fast to throw together, healthy, delicious, and that I can make with one hand. Moolah Cookbook Dated 1979, but I doubt they changed anything from the first printing of 1968. I almost passed this by because it didn't have a cute retro cover, but within are some magical recipes. I have read this book like a novel, and several of the pages are flagged with post-its of recipes to try. This is a Shriners book, the proceeds of which were donated for the care of crippled or burned children. The introduction includes a lovely letter from the director: "...as the recipes cam in, I read each one of them and those that appeared unusual or struck my fancy, I would distribute to my family and office and a few close friends; we had many adventurous meals and experiments. I would recommend that you use this book in pretty much the same fashion. You can, of course, start looking through it with an idea that you want to serve a specific kind of beef or pork and find a way to prepare it, but I think you will have much more fun if, before you make up your mind what to serve, you just open the book and peruse it at random. You will find that it will not take very long at all for you to hit one that strikes your fancy and a whole new world of taste treats will open to you. If you have, in using this book, a small fraction of the enjoyment I had in assemblying it, it will be a smashing success." I'm still feeling kinda puny, so I may forgo attending, but I had to take a little time to make this--it's actually quick and easy--since my bride is not allowed near my good knives and cookware. She used to be a decent cook, but now has regressed to the point where she could burn water. Lemon Orzo with Roasted Asparagus (The pictures show a doubled recipe) 1 cup orzo 1 T grated lemon zest 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/4 t salt 1/4 t freshly ground pepper 1 T extra virgin olive oil 1/2 bunch asparagus spears 1/4 cup chopped flat leaf parsley 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts 1/2 cup freshly shaved parmiagiano reggiano Preheat oven to 450°/235°C Cook pasta to package directions, usually about 7 minutes. Drain and set aside. Toss asparagus gently with some drizzled olive oil. Lay spears on rimmed baking sheet in one layer. Roast in hot preheated oven for about 8 minutes or until beginning to show brown bits. Toast pine nuts in dry small skillet, tossing frequently until light brown and fragrant. Don't over toast. Combine lemon zest, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Slowly drizzle in oil while briskly stirring with a whisk until well blended. Add to pasta and coat by tossing. Cool to room temperature. Add pine nuts and parsley to pasta and toss gently. Cut roasted asparagus into 1" slices. Gently fold into pasta. Top with shaved parmigiano. Can serve cold or room temperature. Flavorful and vitamin packed! RICE COOKER RATIO : COOKER RATIO
Rice Cooker Ratio : Cooking Games Dress Up : David Cook Album Songs. Rice Cooker Ratio
PHI - the golden ratio Phi, the Fibonacci sequence, the golden ratio, the golden section, the golden mean, the divine proportion. It’s known as many things, but the ratio they all refer to is the same, 1 : 1.61803399... Found in art, architecture, design, and most intriguingly, in nature, this ratio has been used throughout history and today for its aesthetic beauty. "The golden ratio was first studied by ancient mathematicians because of its frequent appearance in geometry. There is evidence that it was understood and used as far back in history as ancient Egypt. In the Great Pyramid of Giza built around 2600 BC, the golden ratio is represented by the ratio of the length of the face (the slope height), inclined at an angle ? to the ground, to half the length of the side of the square base, equivalent to the secant of the angle ?. The above two lengths were about 186.4 and 115.2 metres respectively. The ratio of these lengths is the golden ratio 1.618. The largest isosceles triangle of the sriyantra design used in ancient India, described in the Atharva-Veda (circa 1200-900 BC) is one of the face triangles of the Great Pyramid in miniature, showing almost exactly the same relationship between ? and the golden ratio as in its larger counterpart. It is believed that after tracing the path of Venus in the sky, the ancients found that the ratio of the length of the long arm of the pentagon shape to the length of the shorter arm was 1.618. The ancient Greeks usually attributed its discovery to Pythagoras (or to the Pythagoreans, notably Theodorus) or to Hippasus of Metapontum. Hellenistic mathematician Euclid spoke of the "golden mean" this way, "a straight line is said to have been cut in extreme and mean ratio when, as the whole line is to the greater segment, so is the greater to the lesser". The golden ratio is represented by the Greek letter varphi (phi, after Phidias, a sculptor who commonly employed it) or less commonly by ? (tau, the first letter of the ancient Greek root ?(?/?)?- meaning cut)." Ise-Shi Gyoza Restaurant 4 This place is so atmospheric! As you can see it was bustling with staff at 11pm on the Saturday night of the Ise River Fireworks festival. Although half a world away both geographically and cuisine wise, it had the welcoming home-cooking feel of Mario's cafe at the top of Bourke St in Melbourne. And hands down they were THE BEST gyoza I've ever tasted; and Yumi will testify, I've tasted a helluva lot of gyoza in the past few months! Yumi also sang the praises of their onegeri (rice balls) so I ordered one. I stooped old obasan hobbled out from the back room and swiftly fashioned one freshly from the rice cooker. The rice was cooked to perfection and lightly salted and the (seeded) umeboshi plum at its centre had been home pickled. There was only a small piece of nori (dried seaweed) wraped around it, modern onegari tend to be completely wraped in it; but the ratio of seaweed to rice was perfect. I'm looking forward to returning to this place!
