Spike Lee Joint Collection (Clockers/ Jungle Fever/ Do the Right Thing/ Mo` Better Blues/ Crooklyn)

Spike Lee is one of the most acclaimed and controversial directors of all time. Now five of his most provocative, thought-provoking films are available in one collection. From the breakout hit dramedy DO THE RIGHT THING to the gritty, urban CLOCKERS, Lee peels away life's layers, exposing the ironies, brutalities, rhythms and prejudices of the naked city in this powerful collector's set.

Clockers
Based on the riveting bestseller by Richard Price, this 1995 crime drama was directed by Spike Lee with such authority and authenticity that it has the hyper-real quality of a stylized documentary. Fully capturing the thoroughly researched detail of Price's novel, the film focuses on Strike (newcomer Mekhi Phifer), a young, ambitious "clocker"--or drug dealer--who works the streets of his New York housing project, selling drugs for a local supplier named Rodney (played with ferocious charisma by Delroy Lindo). Just as Strike is struggling to get away from his dead-end life of crime, another dealer is murdered in a fast-food restaurant and local detectives (Harvey Keitel, John Turturro) consider Strike the primary suspect. In cowriting the script with novelist Price, Lee uses this murder mystery to explore the plague of guns and black-on-black crime in America's inner cities, in which drugs and death are familiar routines of daily life. The film doesn't pretend to offer solutions, nor does it dwell on the problem with numbing insistence. Rather, this taut, well-acted film takes the viewer into a world often hidden in plain sight--a world where options seem nonexistent for youth conditioned to have little or no expectation beyond a probable early death. Lee and Price are deadly serious in handling this volatile subject (which incorporates racism, powerless law enforcement, and political indifference), but Clockers is also blessed with humor, insight, and humanity. It's one of Lee's most confidently directed films, signaling a creative maturity that Lee continued to develop throughout the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon
Jungle Fever
Spike Lee's 1991 story about an interracial relationship and its consequences on the lives and communities of the lovers (Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra) is one of his most captivating and focused films. Snipes and Sciorra are very good as individuals trying to reach beyond the limits imposed upon them for reasons of race, tradition, sexism, and such. Lee makes an interesting and subtle case that they are driven to one another out of frustration with social obstacles as well as pure attraction--but is that enough for love to survive? John Turturro is featured in a subplot as an Italian American who grows attracted to a black woman and takes heat from his numbskull buddies. --Tom Keogh
Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee's incendiary look at race relations in America, circa 1989, is so colorful and exuberant for its first three-quarters that you can almost forget the terrible confrontation that the movie inexorably builds toward. Do the Right Thing is a joyful, tumultuous masterpiece--maybe the best film ever made about race in America, revealing racial prejudices and stereotypes in all their guises and demonstrating how a deadly riot can erupt out of a series of small misunderstandings. Set on one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the hottest day of the summer, the movie shows the whole spectrum of life in this neighborhood and then leaves it up to us to decide if, in the end, anybody actually does the "right thing." Featuring Danny Aiello as Sal, the pizza parlor owner; Lee himself as Mookie, the lazy pizza-delivery guy; John Turturro and Richard Edson as Sal's sons; Lee's sister Joie as Mookie's sister Jade; Rosie Perez as Mookie's girlfriend Tina; Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee as the block elders, Da Mayor and Mother Sister; Giancarlo Esposito as Mookie's hot-headed friend Buggin' Out; Bill Nunn as the boom-box toting Radio Raheem; and Samuel L. Jackson as deejay Mister Senor Love Daddy. A rich and nuanced film to watch, treasure, and learn from--over and over again. --Jim Emerson
Mo' Better Blues
With Mo' Better Blues, the story of a young trumpeter's rise to jazz-world stardom, Spike Lee set out to counter Clint Eastwood's cliche-ridden biopic of Charlie Parker in Bird. But the final product, a slick, glossy drama (with hip-hop jazz provided by Gangstarr no less), is just as superficial as the numerous Alger-esque stories of music stardom to which movie audiences are accustomed.
Denzel Washington gives a typically charismatic performance as the trumpeter in question, as does Wesley Snipes as his sax-playing rival. And as with most Spike Lee films, there are numerous solid performers in small roles such as Bill Nunn, Latin-music star Ruben Blades, and comedian Robin Harris. One character, however, attracted unwanted attention: John Turturro's role as an unscrupulous music-industry exec. Critics called the Turturro character, who is at once money hungry, swarthy, and perpetually shrouded in darkness, a classic anti-Semitic caricature. But the charge seems almost irrelevant in Spike Lee's cartoonish, overstylized world of impossibly hunky jazzmen, curvaceous hangers-on, and incessant bebop. --Ethan Brown
Crooklyn
Spike Lee's semiautobiographical, 1994 film about the good and bad times for a Brooklyn family in the '70s has passion and nostalgic good feeling, but it is also a mess of random reflections and arbitrary storytelling. The centerpiece of the movie is a little girl (Zelda Harris) who views the ups and downs of her parents' experiences (mom and dad are played by Delroy Lindo and Alfre Woodard), and who navigates the life of her neighborhood. Lee tosses in a lot of '70s detail (watching The Partridge Family) and other diversions (Harris's journey through suburbia), but he has no master sensibility controlling the flow of it all. The film is more wearying than anything, although bright spots include Lindo's fine performance as a talented man suffering from irrelevance. --Tom Keogh

Infrared Photo Example

Infrared Photo Example

With an infrared filter over the lens, digital cameras can be used for infrared photography. My filter is opaque, not red, which results in a true infrared rendition. I shoot at maximum aperature, but even in bright sun an exposure takes 30 seconds with my Canon 10D on a tripod. I bracket the manual focusing with multiple exposures, since the focal point differs in infrared. I particularly like how a drab, overcast sky can come to life, as seen in the above comparison.

I know it's not fair, the compact camera is really cheap, but it's the best digital I have.
Of course, as always, those strange colors with the scanner camera are because of the infrared sensitivity. for more information read the previous photos.

Day 11 - The (F)1 that started it all

Day 11 - The (F)1 that started it all

Jan. 11, 2010 - "The (F)1 that started it all"

This afternoon I wrote a blog entitled "Why photography?".

This evening, having no photos from the day that I was happy with enough to post... and taking that blog into consideration, only one subject seemed right... my first "real" camera.

My grandfather (my father's father) was a photographer. When, at age 16, I decided that I wanted to get into photography as a serious artistic interest, I turned to my grandfather for advice on choosing a camera. He asked me what I wanted to shoot... then told me to "come down to the house next weekend and we'll discuss it".

I arrived at my grandparents house the following weekend, only to find the dining room table absolutely covered in cameras and camera equipment... and my grandfather practically glowing! A 35mm camera body... and at least a dozen lenses... plus flashes... motor drives... light meters... and other accessories - and we discussed the details and nuances of each and every one.

My grandfather seemed more "alive" that night than I had ever seen him in my entire life. We talked for hours - and not just about photography... but also about music (he had been a musician, playing a variety of instruments from flute to sax to, I believe - trombone) - as well as "deeper" subjects, like marriage.

We had a wonderful day together... and I thought that that was that. I had a wealth of information about cameras... and basically learned that if I was going to buy a 35mm SLR camera, it HAD to be a Canon - or it simply wasn't worth buying! I figured that I now had enough information to go out and buy what I needed... probably a used Canon AE-1 or something like that.

Then my grandfather shocked me... and told me that what I saw on the table was now mine. A Canon "New" F-1 body with an AE Finder... a dozen Canon FD lenses, each with filters, hoods and cases... Canon Speedlite flashes... Canon Power-winder/Motor-drive... and all of the accessories. This wasn't a simple 35mm camera... this was Canon's absolute top model professional manual 35mm camera... their last manual 35mm camera before switching over to the EOS system of Auto-focus. It was absolutely beautiful to me!

I was shocked!

Enough "Thank You!"s could never be uttered! I swore to put the camera to good use... and it wasn't long before I had blown through ten rolls of Kodak T-MAX B&W film. My first "real" photographs.

The black metal rings which capped the cartridges from those first ten rolls were placed on a ball-link chain... and became my "Creativity Mojo". I've worn them on my belt almost every day of my life since then.

And the camera? Obviously I still have it... and while it's no longer my primary camera (having switched to a digital SLR several years ago) - I do still use it from time-to-time. The camera is almost 25 years old... and still works absolutely perfectly!

Since receiving the F-1 almost 20 years ago... I've used a half-dozen other cameras... and every single one of them has been a Canon. While I plan to purchase a Leica within the year... and a Hasselblad after that - Canon is just part of my life... and I can't imagine ever being without one. I certainly won't ever get rid of that F-1!

So... this is "the camera that started it all" for me. After all these years I still find it to be absolutely beautiful!

So this is how the story went
I met someone by accident
That blew me away
That blew me away

It was in the darkest of my days
When you took my sorrow and you took my pain
And buried them away, you buried them away

And I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face under the morning sun
But like everything I've ever known
I'm sure you'll go one day
So I'll spend my whole life hiding my heart away
And I can't spend my whole life hiding my heart away

The canon S90 is the best compact digital camera. In fact, because it is so compact, I think it is the best digital camera, period.

Capturing this shot was a breeze. I rested the camera on my bag (was also lugging around a Rolleiflex TLR), set it to timer release to prevent me shaking the camera and hit the shutter.

I set the camera to 80ISO (base ISO), just because I could.

Ft. Lauderdale hotel balcony, Feb 2011 - 08

(More details later, as time permits)

********************************

I didn't expect to be here in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; I was supposed to be in Sarasota, checking out places where we might be able to escape the increasingly unpleasant winter season in the Northeastern U.S. But the weather this winter was sufficiently unpleasant that my outbound flight was canceled, and my backup flight was canceled after I had gotten as far as Philadelphia ... so I spent an unexpected night at an airport hotel, scrubbed the whole Sarasota visit, and came to Ft. Lauderdale instead, since I knew I had to get here eventually for a computer conference that I'm speaking at ...

I ended up spending a night at a Marriott hotel on the beach in a part of Ft. Lauderdale known as Hollywood -- not to be confused, of course, with the glitzy section of Los Angeles out on the West Coast. To make up for the unpleasantness of getting down here, I decided to splurge and spend a few extra bucks to get a room on a high floor, with an ocean view and a balcony. It might have been a great place for a winter vacation if I could have stayed longer, but it was a relaxing contrast to the long, miserable trip down here ...

I had brought with me a brand-new Sony alpha-55 DSLR camera, intending to try it out in Sarasota; it didn't occur to me that I might use it instead in Ft. Lauderdale, and I didn't have any particular interest in walking up the long boardwalk that stretches along the beach strip ... but I couldn't resist spending a few minutes out on the balcony in the late afternoon, enjoying the cool breeze, the surf, and the sound of the waves.

The tide was out, and people were wandering around out in the shallow water and exposed stretches of sand; gulls and terns wandered around also, presumably looking for morsels of food. So I decided to pull out the new Sony camera and take a bunch of shots. Because I was using it for the first time, I had forgotten to check the white-balance setting; most of the images were shot with the WB set for indoor fluorescent lighting, but because they were all RAW images, I was able to adjust the color temperature.

Unfortunately, they're all handheld shots, taken at a super-long telephoto zoom setting (approx 400mm equivalent on a 35mm camera), from a 9th-floor hotel balcony, of subjects who were probably a couple hundred yards away. So they're not as crisp and sharp as I would like them to be ... but at least I learned enough about the camera to use it more effectively next time.

By the way, the reason I got the camera was that (a) it combines still + video shooting, (b) it's got a "swivel" LCD monitor, which I've gotten very fond of on my Canon G12, (c) it's got built-in GPS for geotagging photos, (d) it's substantially more compact than my bulky Nikon D300/D700, (e) it's got a "translucent" mirror, which doesn't flip up when an image is recorded, thus allowing a maximum of 10 frames/second, and (f) it's substantially less expensive than a comparable video+still Nikon or Camera. I'll let you know what I think of it after I've shot a few thousand pictures with it...

LEICA COMPACT CAMERA REVIEW. CAMERA LENS RENT.

Leica Compact Camera Review

leica compact camera review

    compact camera
  • A point-and-shoot camera, also called a compact camera, is a still camera designed primarily for simple operation . Most use focus free lenses or autofocus for focusing, automatic systems for setting the exposure options, and have flash units built in.

  • The general term for small, light cameras designed for convenience. While they do not offer interchangeable lenses, they are perfectly usable for snapshots, and some do employ high-performance optics. Ideal for travel or “visual notebook” applications.

  • Commonly refers to a point-and-shoot camera.

    review
  • an essay or article that gives a critical evaluation (as of a book or play)

  • A formal assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of instituting change if necessary

  • look at again; examine again; "let's review your situation"

  • A periodical publication with critical articles on current events, the arts, etc

  • A critical appraisal of a book, play, movie, exhibition, etc., published in a newspaper or magazine

  • reappraisal: a new appraisal or evaluation

    leica
  • Leica Camera AG, a German optics company, produces Leica cameras. The predecessor of the company, formerly Ernst Leitz GmbH, is now three companies: Leica Camera AG, Leica Geosystems AG, and Leica Microsystems AG, producing cameras, geosurvey equipment and microscopes, respectively.

  • A compound word derived from " (Lei)tz " and " (ca)mera ". Apparently they were originally going to use "LECA", but another camera company already used a similar name in France, so they inserted the 'i' to prevent any confustion.

Fenway Park, View from Prudential Center (SONY HX9v)

Fenway Park, View from Prudential Center (SONY HX9v)

Fenway Park view from the Prudential center; using full zoom of Sony HX9v (added some sharpness, post-processed)

It's so great to have a focal range of (24 to 364); having such a focal range is so useful, especially for traveling and just everyday documentation/shooting, this little Sony HX9v has become my favorite, all around, take-everywhere-with me camera.

I have used other highly rated point and shoot cameras like the Sigma DP2s, Ricoh GRD III, Leica DLux (4,5) and Panansonic LX (3,4). I'm not a technical reviewer, but I do shoot a lot and I personally find the SONY having an edge over the other cameras—compared to the other compacts I mentioned, a. Sony covers an extensive focal range, b. I love Sony's Panoramic mode, c. I like Sony's "background blur" effect that actually works quite well.

And, above all, somehow, Sony has the fastest focus. I can shoot my kids on a swing (daytime) all day long without getting a single blurry pic. This was quite hard to achieve with the other point and shoot. Again, I need to mention that one issue I have with Sony is how SLOW it takes to change modes. Otherwise, it would have been one of the most responsive compacts I have used.

Image quality wise, it's impressive (for a small sensor size, compact). It's sharp when shooting up close; it's seemingly sharp when shooting landscape shots but if you zoom in at 100% you will see the workings of the image processor—some areas look good but some areas look downright ugly and overprocessed. That said, the overall image quality for web posting and small-medium prints will be fine.

…more thoughts to come later.

I dunno about you, but when I am searching for new gear I almost always search for it here on flickr, curious of what others have done with it/have to say about it. Hope this helps!

Cobra SL3 GPS Speed and Red Light Camera Locator

GPS, SAFETY LOCATOR W/ AURA Camera

The SL3 is a standalone GPS-enabled device that warns drivers to thousands of driving threats that include red light, speed cameras and caution areas. These driving threats could cause unintended traffic violations as well as accidents. The result, drivers have heightened situational awareness?extra help to know what?s around them, and what?s ahead. The SL3 GPS Safety Locator provides a simple, safe way to warn drivers of potential dangers at a price that is less than most traffic violations or deductibles.
SL3 Features
The AURA Database
The AURA database stores GPS coordinates of speed and red light cameras and driving hazards. Users can access this database online and download daily updates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The SL3 Safety Locator connects via USB, synchronizing the coordinates for the most current and accurate camera and dangerous intersection alerts.
Custom Locations
Drivers can also add up to 1,000 location-based alerts to ensure that they are alerted to temporary or moveable driving threats.
Adjustable Brightness
You can adjust the brightness of the display on the SL3 to your preference, with bright and dim settings to choose from.
Adjustable Volume
The SL3 also features an adjustable volume for controlling the loudness of the audible alert.

How the SL3 Works
Driven by the proprietary AURA database, the SL3 uses a series of LED lights and tones to alert the driver to both the type of threat and its relative proximity. The 3-Zone Notification System escalates the alerts based on the driver's speed ensuring enough time is given before the intersection is reached.
Zones are measured differently depending on your speed, with two steps to accomodate gradual and faster travel.
The Cobra SL3 responds to four types of alerts: Speed Trap, Photo Enforcement (Red Light and Speed Cameras), Caution Areas (high accident locations) and User Points. As you approach a stored location, the unique sound for that type of location will be sounded.

Visual Alert
In addition to audio alerts, the zones are indicated with the 5 LEDs flashing, with more of them flashing the closer you get.
ZONE 1: Outer green LEDs flash.
ZONE 2: Outer green and middle amber LEDs flash.
ZONE 3: The green, amber and center red LEDs all flash.

Me, myself and I

Me, myself and I

I got tagged. I mean... I assume *we* did. The multiple me(s) that is. We're not just one person, or rarely... so I felt I had -out of honesty to my Flickr friends- to invite a few of my avatars here. It was tough and long, but well... I put my Bombay series between brackets, the time of one single (multiple?) shot, for better or for worse.

I would have preferred to stay in hiding (I don't do self portraits) but I love street photography and enjoy displaying others... it was not really fair to do so while staying hidden behind a camera. So here are a few random facts about me, listed by emotional relevance.

My 10 y/o daughter shot the pictures.

A. As a Man of Adventures...

1. At the age of seven (in 1976), my parents decided to spend a full year in India. We travelled all over the country while they taught me the school's curriculum. Soon after, they created a travel agency here, along with a partner from Kashmir. This brought us to India for 3 months every year (particularly to Kashmir and Ladakh). I have been going to India each year without fail since then, until 1994 when I permanently settled in New Delhi. I got married in 1995 with a girl from Bengal. We have one daughter.

2. At the age of 13, I started working as a local guide in Kashmir and Ladakh during my summer holidays. I loved the job and the extra pocket money I earned.

3. I nearly got arrested by the Pakistani police in Peshawar for transporting a gun-pen that I had purchased in Dara, last village before the Khyber Pass. I was 19, working as a group leader and in those days (long before 9/11) tourists were made to visit this picturesque village, so they could admire its thriving weapons market and try their hands on kalashnikovs and rocket launchers. I had left the gun (purchased for the equivalent of 7 Euros) in my suitcase, without realising it would be (quite) visible in the x-ray machine. Local policemen finally let me go, thinking I was probably too dumb to be a threat to national security.

4. I acted as an extra in a Japanese movie, shot in India. I met the crew at the nepalese border and travelled with them by train to Patna and Benares. While shooting in Patna, I was waiting for my minute of glory when a man walked up to me and asked: "Hello, are you Mel Gibson?"... (as you can see from the picture, I still look a lot like Mel...). To which I -of course- answered "yes", not knowing whether I'd ever get the chance again...

5. At the age of 7 or 8, trying to emulate my daredevil cousin (who was much older), I attempted to perform a summersault while jumping from a height of around 3 metres, into a (rather thinish) haystack. Believing (wrongly) that my body would rotate on its own, I neglected to give the required impulse and landed squarely on my head. Though I appeared unscathed, some say this event explains a few things about me...

6. In spite of having spent most of my life traveling and facing challenging situations, I am wholeheartedly sedentary. I crave a peaceful and repetitive life but, somehow, never seem to be getting any closer to it...

So I must now confess to whomsoever gives a damn... that I definitely am not a Man of Adventures. Quite the contrary in fact...

B. As a Corporate Man

7. I graduated from a French Business School in 1993. I read economic newspapers and I often wear a tie (no cufflinks, sorry).

8. I work as a corporate adviser, helping foreign and local companies develop their business in India and abroad. My core competence is India, with a specific focus on strategic advisory, mergers and acquisitions and market research.

9. I like being on the field, meeting people and finding practical solutions that work in the real world. I don't play golf, I dislike coffee-machine-politics, lengthy power point presentations, neverending strings of meetings and abstract models that look good and lead nowhere.

So actually... I'm not much of a Corporate Man.

C. As a Photographer

10. As you probably guessed, I love photography but... am not a photographer either.

...go figure...

Bronx: Van Cortlandt Lake

Bronx: Van Cortlandt Lake

New York City - Bronx
"View of Van Cortlandt Lake - 2008"

This photo is from a project titled ”Urban Nature: A New York City Landscape Study” which I began in 2005. My goal is to document the beauty as well as the mystery of New York City's remaining natural topography. In doing so, I'm attempting to convey a feeling of how the land might have looked hundreds of years ago. I feel these photographs help expose a mostly hidden and unknown aspect of the landscape that very few people associate with New York City.

© Richard Serviss
Not for publication without written permission

Work Notes:
I began working in the project in the spring of 2005 with a Crown Graphic 4x5 camera shooting Ilford FP4 rated at ASA 125. I continued to use this camera throughout the year, but soon yearned for more camera movements. I then purchased a Shen Hao HZX 4X5-IIA which I use almost exclusively now. Occasionally, when the terrain is too steep or dangerous to set up a 4x5 camera, I’ve used a Kowa Super 66 medium format camera. A few times I resorted to 35mm with fine grain film when I needed a very long lens, but use of this format is very limited. Most of the project was done with a 4x5 camera. The Shen Hao being the camera of choice with lenses being old Kodak Ektars, Graflex Optars and Wollensack Raptars. Probably my latest model lens, as far as year of production, is a Schneider Symmar 210mm "convertible" lens. Focal lengths with these lenses range from 110mm to 360mm. Generally, I shoot with 4x5 Ilford FP4 rated at ASA 125 or with 120 sized Ilford Pan F rated at ASA 50. However, I’ve experimented with several other alternative film brands from Europe.

The exhibition prints from this project are 16x20” and 20x24” sizes with a minimum of one-inch border, depending on the crop and film format, around live image area. Printing paper is Oriental’s Seagull Select VC-FBII paper developed in Photographers' Formulary Paper Developer 130. All prints are toned in selenium for D-Max enhancement and permanence.

Digital folios of ten 8.5x11 inch signed prints are also available.

Camera model: Nikon N50

I'm currently experimenting with film photography. These days, everyone has a digital camera so it feels nice doing something a little vintage.
I love how my camera (along with all other SLR cameras) has manual focus where I get to turn the barrel. It makes me feel like a pro...but of course, I go with auto focus more because I'm still a noob.

By the way, that box is supposed to be my lightbox. It's obviously too small. :<

Manfrotto 501HDV Video Head - Replaces 501

Manfrotto 501HDV Video Head - Replaces 501

Inside the 501HDV is a powerful new feature that takes its inspiration from our top professional video head models – a fixed counterbalance spring (set for a typical weight of camera + accessories of 2.5kg) that helps ensure both smoother tilt movements and greater equipment safety even when tilt locks are inadvertently left off. The easy- to- reach on/off switch allows the counterbalance system to be disengaged or re- engaged for different filming setups. But from the outside, the first thing that you’ll notice about the new 501HDV video head is its updated design – completely retuned for much improved ergonomics with locks and knobs that allow a more solid grip and better fingertip control. The 501HDV inherits its separate pan and tilt locks, gradual tilt friction adjustment system, flat base (with standard 3/8” thread), quick release camera plate and repositionable pan bar from its successful predecessor. This replaces the Manfrotto heads 3063 and 136. Adventures under the Pyramid

Adventures under the Pyramid

DSCN4438

I am an extremely claustrophobic person ,and the idea of going under the long narrow passage gave me the cringe . I was holding the separate entry ticket of the Pyramid , whilst strongly battling my fears to close spaces .Perhaps I could have stayed outside and leave my family to do it ,but I would probably keep thinking and regretting it to much for a long time .I tried to be objective over my fears . As I'm only a visitor of Cairo , chances are I wouldn't be near this monument again , took it as my very last opportunity .

I do hate the idea being down under a dark passage . It gave me the feeling I was almost buried alive ,breathless , suffocating .
As petite as myself , I have to I bend down following the slopping steps going to the interior .It must be a hurdle for anyone over six feet tall unless the body is supple .

Photography isn't allowed and bringing along big bags , perhaps with speculation they contain big camera equipment e.g., DSLR +lenses and what have you . This is when a tiny photo and shoot camera gets so useful when you carry it discreetly ,well anyway , it was only a P&S what I've got at that time .I took few shots ,there was no on looking guard along the passage ,even in the interior but there were what looks like a monitoring camera . I was reassured of the idea photography without a flash wouldn't do technical damage to the interior's surface of this few thousand yrs monument , hence it didn't give me the feeling I am doing it completely wrong not abiding the rules ( and be in jail /penalized ? ) . Not a good behaviour , it was an opportunistic act in such circumstances ,driven by overpowering passion to take photos . I only took few photographs .:)

Actually there were few of us inside taking photos ; some even come with a video camera . It's a lifetime experience to be inside so it's easy to justify why people have to be daring and take the chance . I am not encouraging for people to do the same .Use your judgement and objectivity ,do what is right . If you feel it's totally wrong and will haunt your for a life time ,never do it .

As far as I am concern , I don't regret it ...that will be my first and last seeing the Pyramids and so be it .

They only issue 300 tickets for entry ( inside ) of the Pyramids daily .Let this be clear you have to get a different ticket to get near the Pyramids . For the Pyramid interior tickets ,they issue 150 tickets in the morning and 150 in the afternoon . So with over a thousand visitors of this monument daily and perhaps half of them would like entry inside ,there's a big competition , and it's always a pot luck if you get the interior entry tickets . My best advise come as early as possible and cue up .

------------------------
17-11-10

To irradicate or reduced to a minumum level of illegal / oppotunistic photography ,could it not be better if the system relaxed the rules that inhibits taking photos in the interior, rather make it easier for the visitors ,where photography be allowed in exchange for a minimal fee for every camera that gets in and would apply to any historic monuments like tombs. As it is free to photograph outside the monuments ; with people jumping ,climbing ,walking over and around those pyramid stones which can potentially erode the surface, then why can't it be no-flash photography be allowed inside ?

This day and age when air travel is easier and every tourists has access to cameras - everyone loves to take photos ....

A peaceful arrangement of a fee for every camera / photography in the interior will be an added bulk of revenue for the tourism industry , everyone will be happier .

Check out these sites with great photos inside the Pyramid :) you can google for more :

X100

X100

Quick review:

Holding this retro-looking camera, it feels good. A little larger and heavier than I expected, but solid and well-built. Flick the power switch, and it comes to life with a whirr and a buzz. It takes about 3-4 seconds before you can take a shot. Very much like a P&S.

Look through the hybrid viewfinder in optical mode, and it's like a DSLR come alive. Until you notice the lens visible in the lower-right corner. Frame lines adjust on focus which is a nice touch. In EVF mode, it's very much like previous cameras I've used that also had EVFs, but a bit larger.

The shutter button feels nice and responds well. Engage AF and you get more whirring noises. Sometimes AF is relatively quick, other times it hunts and gives up. Every once in a while, it will give you focus lock but miss the mark. Probably it's biggest weakness is the AF. It's slower than what I'm used to, and not all that accurate. Frustrating.

Shutter lag is as good as a DSLR. Shutter sound is quiet and satisfying. Take a shot and it immediately shows up in the EVF with some random photo filter. Perhaps a nice touch, but I would have disabled it if it let me. Which brings us to the menu system. Clunky, but you get used to it.

Manual focus is not good at all. Focus by wire is a complete hindrance. I absolutely despise it. The only thing they got right here is the focus ring is smooth.

I kept bumping the exposure comp. dial which was another source of frustration. The lens cap stays on using friction, it would not be difficult to bump off accidentally.

Image quality is good for APS-C. Every bit as good as an equivalent DSLR. High ISO is clean up to ISO 1600. ISO 3200 is very usable. Above that, the AF will be your main concern.

What confuses me about this camera is the lens. Supposedly it's optimised for this setup. Well, it isn't that sharp wide open. It gets much better from f2.8 and hits its stride at f5.6 but why is there a macro mode? Enabling and disabling macro mode is more frustrating than it needs to be. Without it you can't focus closer than half a meter. Turn it on, and AF becomes even slower and it forces EVF mode.

Panorama mode works well but use manual exposure for best results. Continuous shooting at 5fps works well enough but the AF means it isn't well suited to action. Movie mode, it works.

In the end, the hybrid VF is really the star of this setup. I want more of this. The sensor is great for a camera this size but you can find it in much cheaper cameras. If you want to shoot wide open a lot then the lens will most likely disappoint you. The menu and controls are better than some entry-level DSLRs but really not good.

It does look nice, and best of all inconspicuous. Useful for street photography, which you've probably heard others say. However, the slow AF doesn't cope so well with moving subjects, even if they're only walking.

Overall, a nice camera. I just don't think it's worth the asking price (AU$1200 as I write this).

Olympus E-PL1 Digital Holga

Olympus E-PL1 Digital Holga

This is more a vote for Micro Four Thirds, than it is for this specific camera. You can substitute the E-P1 for that matter. But I think these small cameras with high image quality potential are a revolution in the world of photography. They are so versatile. With the proper adapter, you can mate these cameras with almost any lens you can think of, breathing new life into wonderful glass previously considered dead, or at least terminal.

Anyone who knows me will tell you how lazy I am. I am kind of combining this HOF pick with another. If you look closely, you will see that this E-PL1 is wearing a Holga lens! And it works very well, unlike a lot of similar products I have tried. The Holga as most of you know, is a cheap, plastic camera out of Hong Kong in the 60's, that is widely acclaimed for the look of its photos: sometimes soft, sometimes sharp and with dark corners. And with varying degrees of light leaks. It is still the least expensive entry into medium format photography and is credited with re-energizing one's creativity. It is a lot of fun, and for the money, you can afford to lose or break it. I could go on, but no need.

The marriage of the E-Pl1 (or any M4/3 camera or DSLR) creates a sort of digital Holga. Some say the best of both worlds, but the purist might not go for it. Part of the fun of the Holga experience is the "never knowing what you're going to get" part as you wait for your film to develop. Either way, the Holga and the Micro Four Thirds camera are revolutionary in their own ways and each have earned a spot in my Hall of Fame.

Zeiss Ikon

Zeiss Ikon

This is my Zeiss Ikon Contaflex IV. (SLR, 35mm) Made in 1958.

Packing for my last adventure, this, the Hassey and Lomo where going ( No digi ). There was no film in it at the time, so since I haven't used it in a long time I tested it. Both the aperture and leaf spring shutter were hanging up!! Woops, service time!

So I left this behind and brought the Rollei 35 instead. Then I forgot the light meter for the Hasselblad, so the only shots taken this time are B&W Lomo and color from the Rollei.

Brought it in to the shop today for repair. The tech. told me it would work like new when he's done!! And also said this is the best model Contaflex Zeiss made, out of about 10 different ones. He also said it cost about $300 when new. Now figure in 1958, $300 is now about these day's is about $1500 ( just a guess ).

To turn this in for repair only had taken 1 1/2 hours. You mix two film camera buffs together, well now I say Zeiss is the best glass and he says Leica... then it was out to my truck because he wanted to see my Zeiss tripod and Rollei 35.

I had a good time talking to someone that knows cameras!! He also said that today this camera would sell for only about $300 at todays money. The digital world has really hurt what I like to think as real photography. Please don't get me wrong, digital is great, but just dosn't have that flavor, if ya'll know what I mean.

Well to me it's worth a million bucks being it was given to me as a birthday present from my wife.

Ironic, photo shot by Leica ;)

Update: It cost $298 to fix...

the best digital camera for the money
