Walter E. Washington Walter Edward Washington, (April 15, 1915 – October 27, 2003) was an American politician, the first Home-Rule mayor of the District of Columbia. He was also the last appointed President of the Board of Commissioners of Washington, D.C. Early life and family Washington, the great-grandson of a slave, was born in Dawson, Georgia and raised in Jamestown, New York. He graduated with a bachelor's degree and, later, received his law degree from Howard University in the District. His first wife, Benetta, died in 1991. In 1994 he married Mary Burke. He had a daughter, Benetta Washington, with his first wife. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity. After graduating from Howard in 1948, Washington was hired as a supervisor for D.C.'s Alley Dwelling Authority. He worked for the authority until a 1961 appointment by John F. Kennedy as the Executive Director of the National Capital Housing Authority, the housing department of the then-Federally controlled District of Columbia. In 1966 he took the same position in the administration of New York City mayor John Lindsay. Mayor of the District of Columbia Between 1967 and 1974, Washington had been appointed Mayor-Commissioner by Presidents Lyndon Johnson (1967–1972) and Richard Nixon (1972–1974), during the period before home rule became effective in the District. (He actually was offered the appointment in 1966, but declined because Johnson would not give him authority over the police and fire departments.) Washington was one of three black men chosen to become mayors of major American cities in 1967. Richard Hatcher of Gary, Ind. and Carl Stokes of Cleveland were both elected to their posts in that year, while Washington was appointed. Soon after his initial appointment by President Johnson, Washington was faced with the riots in the District that followed the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. Although he was reportedly urged by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover to shoot the rioters, he refused. He told the Washington Post later, "I walked by myself through the city and urged angry young people to go home. I asked them to help the people who had been burned out." Congress had enacted the District of Columbia Self-Rule and Governmental Reorganization Act on December 24, 1973, providing for an elected mayor and city council for the District. Home rule became effective with the first mayor and council on January 2, 1975. Anticipating that new law, Washington began a vigorous campaign in early 1974 for popular election against six local challengers. The Democratic primary race eventually settled into a two-way contest between Washington and future Army Secretary Clifford Alexander, with Washington ultimately winning a tight race by 4,000 votes. In the November general election, he was selected by a large majority, and when home rule came into effect the following January 2, Washington was sworn in as popularly elected mayor by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Although personally beloved by his constituents, Washington slowly found himself overcome by the problems of managing a newly autonomous, and therefore largely experimental, city government. The Washington Post opined that he lacked "command presence," and D.C. Council Chair Sterling Tucker suggested that the problems in the city were because of Washington's inability as a manager of city services. In the 1978 Democratic mayoral primary between Washington, Tucker, and Councilmember Marion S. Barry, Jr., Washington finished third. He left office on January 2, 1979, when the victorious Barry was sworn in. Despite the criticism and defeat of Washington, however, the city had posted a $40 million budget surplus by his final day in office. Later life After ending his term as mayor, Washington joined the New York-based law firm of Burns, Jackson, Miller & Summit, becoming a partner there and opening the firm's Washington, D.C. office. He went into semi-retirement in the mid 1990s, finally taking full retirement at the end of the decade by which time he was in his early eighties. Washington remained a beloved public figure in the District and was much sought after for his political advice. In 2002 he endorsed Anthony A. Williams for a second term as mayor despite a petitioning scandal that had made Williams a write-in candidate. Washington's endorsement was still of sufficient weight that it was carried in all local news outlets. Washington died on October 27, 2003, at Howard University Hospital. Hundreds of mourners came to see him lying in state at the John A. Wilson Building, then attended his funeral at Washington National Cathedral. 13 1/2 Street, the short alley running alongside the Wilson Building, was designated Walter E. Washington Way in his honor; additionally, a new housing development in D.C.'s Ward 8 was named the Walter E. "The Mystique of Sigiriya: Whispers of the Mirror Wall" Authored by Mr. W. J. M. Lokubandara , MP and Present Sepaker of the Parliment His Excellency Robert Blake, the Ambassador for the USA said it best when he described how he had often wondered what goes on behind the calm countenance of the Speaker when all around him was in turmoil during certain sessions in parliament. Now he (and the whole world) knows. When the members of parliament were bashing each other, calling each other by unprintable names and creating chaos, the Speaker, W. J. M. Lokubandara, remained calm with that gentle smile on his face because his mind was elsewhere. He was day-dreaming of the Sigiri damsels. He is not alone. There have been many before him who had fallen in love with these 'long-eyed' golden coloured, heart-shattering ladies; many who had been smitten by their beauty and broken into poetic raptures. The Speaker, though, is different to these other lovers. Instead of writing his own songs in praise of the damsels he pays tribute to his predecessors, those lovers before him who loved Sigiri with the same passion and who recorded them on the mirror wall, by rendering their innermost thoughts into the English language. Thanks to "The Mystique of Sigiriya" those who are unable to read the Sinhala version Sigiri gi siri and certainly the inscriptions themselves can now know the thoughts of the visitors to Sigiriya more than a thousand years ago. Ambassador Blake the next time he climbs the Sigiri rock with his wife and two daughters, would know that a visitor called Tilimala of Ruhuna too climbed the same rock and thought "The slender women among the golden-coloured ones on the mountain side, took my mind solely to themselves. O long-eyed one, what may I do to sustain myself?". Did Kashyapa’s thoughts fly towards Kalawewa? “O long-eyed one, what may I do to sustain myself?” Proving that the graffiti themselves are perhaps more enticing than the damsels His Excellency Alok Prasad, the High Commissioner for India says he spent one whole sleepless night with "The Mystique of Sigiriya". Could the reasons for this enchantment lie not only in the beauty of the damsels, not only in the skills of the poets who wrote on the mirror wall but in the remarkable manner in which the Speaker, himself, wields his pen? Critics like Prof. Wimal Dissanayake says "Yes". "His comments, pithy, relevant and always insightful serve to widen the horizon of understanding of the English reader" while Prof. Ashley Halpe insists the author is not a rasika as he modestly calls himself but a 'sahrdaya- an informed critic and a deeply responsive aficionado who has himself drunk deeply of the Pierian spring". No wonder, for the Speaker recalls growing up on a "staple of classical oriental poetry with the rich imagery of Kavusilumina, the polyphonic rhythms of Mayura Sandesa," as well as the Guttila Kavya and the Salalihini Sandesa. Not satisfied with the few Sigiri verses that were prescribed for his exams he had read Professor Paranavithane's Sigiri Graffiti not once but an uncountable number of times. The melodic verses on the mirror wall became so much a part of his life that soon he began to see them as an "ever obliging good friend". Whenever he was overcome by loneliness, sadness or adversity, he says it was the Sigiri Graffiti that came unfailingly to his rescue. And rescue him, they did, more than twenty one years ago. The day was January 1st, 1977. The place, Haputale, or rather to be more precise the Sunday fair at Diyatalawa. In the presence of the late Hon. J. R. Jayewardene, he was about to make his first speech "Standing up to face the crowd my mind went blank. Did their ancestors too stand here? The silent stone stairways I could see nothing, feel nothing and felt certain could say nothing.Then out of the depths of that frightening void...came a verse that escaped my frozen lips "Topa vanavu himin...a graffitto from the mirror wall". Comparing the suppleness of the graffiti to the Buddharaja Kalka (a therapy used by Ayurveda physicians either with ginger, honey or lime juice depending on the ailment) he says he has used this "pellet" in the academic world, on the political platform and in Parliament - with honey when he addresses his electorate, with lime when he is in Parliament and on the occasion when he was present at the launch of the website at the Attorney General's Department, not with honey or lime but with ginger. Honey, lime, ginger and melons too. Unlike Professor Paranavithana's Sigiri Graffiti with its intricate, sober, sleep-evoking details on epigraphy, grammar etc., the Speaker imagines what would have taken place in the minds of the poets, as they scribbled their thoughts on the mirror wall, and in doing so brings them back to life. He believes, for example, the poet who compares the coquettish smiles of the Sigiri damsels to the seeds of a melon was "tormented by the fire of lust as a result of making love to [her] on Dedication to Doctor Bashir (Part2) I was transported to Bahawal Victoria Hospital from Meo next day. Driver knocked the door and a doctor I think he was completing house job/residence there(that's why has night duty:D) came fully har bariya howa seems worried uff accident case at this time here.He examined my hand and leg and I have asked him doctor will I be able to walk in three days?? Next week I have my practical and I have to go. He answered I can't say anything in morning Dr. Bashir sahab will tell you. Next morning Dr. Bashir with a group of student doctors arrived. Many student doctors all ready got information about my case and my worries about my practical for education where I need to deliver lecture in a school. With Doctor Bashir there was Dr. Waheed also well as a teen ager I have thought aik yeh waheed hai dosra woh Waheed Murad( Kash yeh waheed murad jaisa hota)I mean if you have seen a handsome doctor or doctor have resemblance to you favorite choklati Hero you must have feel better even on death bed;-) Keep in mind these are a teenagers thoughts and this teenager was in LOVE with Six Million DollarMan in age of 7 or 9. So third doctor I have remember his name Doctor Nasrullah was there for his house job that called in United States "residency" (I hope I spell correct) Anyways a student doctor asked Doctor Bashir, "Sir bachi/lil girl;) want to go for her practical next week will she be able to walk until then. Dr. Bashir was looking at my X-Rays and talking to them about what is the problem here and kept looking x-rays he said,"IMPOSSIBLE!" Tears came to my eyes thinking oh my whole two years of study are going to dump and I need to attempt papers again:(( And that moment he just looked at me, he close his lips tightly thinking something and came near my bed saying but don't worry you will walk in three months. At least three months you need to wait to walk again. Are you sure I will be able to walk?? I asked him he yes I am sure, we will use rod to put your bone together:) He smiled saying that. But people are saying I can't walk. Don't listen to people he said look at me he rolled his sleeves to his elbows and showed me his arms (donon bazo mery samney philaey ) asking Can you tell I have rods inside my arms? I saw at him:~O and asked "Oh Just like six million dollar man?" He smiled or should say chuckled and says Yes my both arms were fractured and I have undergo an operation even many now I am fine and doing these operations related to bones. You will be able to walk and do each and every thing in your life but each and every thing takes time. Just keep smiling. And be confident in yourself don't listen to people. Just listen to your heart and doctor. And if you have criminal charges listen to your attorney:p Then saying don't worry you will be fine they went away. A nurse came to my mom and said, Doctor Bashir is very good doctor and every year he visited United States for refresh courses. Another maii/Maid told us that he was Muslim but he married to an Ahmadi/Mirzai girl so he became Mirzai and they support him all the way through expensive medical education. I am thinking at least Ahmadi's support intelligent people like Muslims they just don't let every thing to God:D:D:D Yup in Pakistan Ahmadi's considered minority and they don't like cal themselves minority, they insist we are Muslims. But other then one of my friend in school I always find them very humble and very nice persons in talking and dealing with people. Yeah in hospital word boys and maian give you too much information about all the doctors. My guardian angel Asif Mansoor of our neighborhood came to hospital to see me and my mom and I discussed my practical issue with him. he said get the medical report from doctor that you can not walk and give me all your lesson planes, charts models etc. I will try the examiner can come here we will e your students;-) And I said I can go there in wheal chair. Edwin McMasters Stanton Edwin McMasters Stanton (December 19, 1814 – December 24, 1869), was an American lawyer, politician, United States Attorney General in 1860-61 and Secretary of War through most of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. Less notable is the debate of whether Stanton served a short term as an Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Stanton was born in Steubenville, Ohio, the eldest of the four children of David and Lucy (nee Norman) Stanton. His father was a physician of Quaker stock. Stanton began his political life as a lawyer in Ohio and an antislavery Democrat. After leaving from Kenyon College in 1833 to get a job to support his family, he was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1836. Stanton built a house in the small town of Cadiz, Ohio, and practiced law there until 1847, when he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1856, Stanton moved to Washington, D.C., where he had a large practice before the Supreme Court. In 1859, Stanton was the defense attorney in the sensational trial of Daniel E. Sickles, a politician and later a Union general, who was tried on a charge of murdering his wife's lover, Philip Barton Key, II (son of Francis Scott Key), but was acquitted after Stanton invoked the first use of the insanity defense in U.S. history. Never quite satisfied that all the good in Masonry should be confined to men, Dr. Morris felt that Masonry should be for the whole family, but by the laws of that Ancient Order, women are not eligible for its degrees. Knowing he could not change the Ancient Landmarks of Masonry, Dr. Morris sought some method by which women could share with the Masonic Brother the same inspiration that "prompts man to noble deeds." Although he harbored these feelings for years, it wasn't until 1850, while confined to his home after an accident, that Dr. Morris fully developed the Eastern Star Degrees in their present initiatory form. During this time, he carefully thought out the symbolism and significance of the floor plan and the corps of officers. He conferred the degrees upon his wife and daughters, and some neighbors, presumably having an idea to clothe the ladies with certain words or signs whereby they might make themselves known to Master Masons. These signs and so-called mysteries of the Order were communicated freely to all Master Masons and their relatives. Dr. Morris and other prominent Master Masons gave many lectures and conferred the degrees on many ladies throughout the nation. 1854 Daniel & Ann Elizabeth Bigelow The research that I am doing is on the social structure of Bigelow Park. I am going to observe the park and conduct interview within the park. My hope is to find what kind of social structures are present at Bigelow Park. People should care about my research because it is a good starting point for another project. I am doing my research on a park on the outskirts of downtown Olympia maybe the social structures are different if they are parks within the city. Bigelow Park The Bigelow Park was named after the Bigelow family who played a very key role in Olympia history. The park has Picnic Areas, Playground, Small picnic Shelter, Basketball court, and restrooms. The size of the park is 1.9 acres. There is also some public art in the park. People come to the park all the time, the park closes at a certain time everyday so the park is closed at a certain time. The Park is a great place for families to come and just bring their children there to play. The Playground that is in the park has swings for babies and swings for toddles. There is a tire swing that most children love to play on. There are also two different playgrounds one that is bigger for older children and one for the little children. The Park is very suitable for any one any age to come and play or just hang out. There is also a nice grassy area for people to bring Dogs and play fetch with them or just to lay a blanket down and read a book. Bigelow Park has been around for over ten years and many families love this park. As one Mother said, “That whole neighborhood is one of the best in Olympia. It has a soul.” Part of the Bigelow Park History a project called Planting project will let kids see their work bloom. This project was done in 2001 where the volunteers in the parks program teamed up with local schools and had children go to different parks around Olympia and plant 30,000 flowers bulbs. Bigelow Park was just one of many. The children were very pleased with what they have done to all the parks around the Olympia area. Bigelow park also has a Stone Amphitheater by the front of the park it was built in 1996 by the artists Karen Lohmann, Mark Osborne the cost of building the Amphitheater was $4,000. Bigelow Family The House was built in the “Carpenter Gothic” style. It is one of the oldest framed buildings in the state of Washington. The family still inhabits the house. The Bigelow house was built in 1854. The house has gone though many different times and to this day it still stands. The house was here when Washington was Oregon Territory. Also when Olympia was called Port of Entry for Puget Sound. It was then called Smith field. Then finally it became the state capital. Bigelow was born on March 21 1824 in Belleville, NY. He became a lawyer and studied at Harvard law school. Graduating in 1849. He suffered from a serious eye disease; he feared that he would go blind before he could travel. He joined a wagon train and headed west on the Oregon Trail to Portland. On June 18, 1854 he married his wife Ann Elizabeth White. She was the first school teacher in the area; she was born on November 3rd 1836 in Illinois and had arrived with her family in Olympia in the late 1850’s In 1854 Bigelow was elected as a member of the upper house of the first legislature of Washington Territory. He outlived all the other members of the first legislature. He was later elected as the superintendent of the Olympia School in November 1853.Though their Marriage they had 9 children who were all born and raised in Olympia. The oldest lived till 1967 and had 3 children. I went to Bigelow Park on a week day and then also on a Weekend to see if there was a difference in who was at the park. I didn’t notice a big change but it seemed like there were more activities on the weekend. The Saturday that I was there I saw a group of teens playing Soccer and then later in the day when I came back there were some parents playing T-Ball with their children. As on Weekdays I still saw about the same amount of people but there were less of the group activities on weekdays then on the weekends. The time that I spent at the park I got to observe many different things. I saw many different families come to the park and play with their children. I saw people walking their dogs, people playing basketball, baseball, Tee-ball. I did not see many teenage kids around. When I did it was mainly on the Basketball court or they were just walking though on their way to another place. Mentioned in an interview I wish I could have see a bigger activity going on like the BBQ the man was talking about in a interview I conducted. Research was really easy for me at first but then when I started to look more at my project it got a little bit harder because all the contextual research that I had was from the Bigelow Family and not the park. But I then started to look harder and found some things online that could help me. I then also went to the Olympia library to look in the achieves of the Olympian. Freefall High Score Hall of Fame I tried a Tetris-like (but not Tetris, of course, all lawyers!) game on the iTunes App Store called Freefall that was developed by the brother of one of my colleagues. Unlike most geeks, I've not been heavily into games - in fact, the main one I've played over the years have been TetrisMax (in the old OS 9 days), SuperCollapse (online) and Quinn (OS X) and variations of Mahjong. Yes, very daring! I usually play to tune out. I tried this game, and while I can tell the programmer came from a non-Mac platform (compare to Quinn on OS X), it's proved to be as addictive as a game that is (of course) NOT Tetris can be. I've found myself at the top of the Hall of Fame top score list for what is probably the only time in my life (hence saved for posterity). The developer thought I might even be cheating! What I can say is that after about 20,000 the (slow) game gets repetitive so by the end I was hoping I would make a stupid mistake as I didn't want to "commit suicide" but also wanted to "go to sleep!". I'd recommend that the developer make the "slow" get less slow as the game progresses. It's a good game though and highly recommended although the developer should work on his "Macness" or "iPhoneness" a bit. Sadly, I can only upload my top score - and if I want to upload my best "fast" (and more challenging) score, I'll have to wipe the app and start again - so here for posterity... NB: Now superceded on all fronts but it was nice to briefly hold both top scores - I'm amazed anyone had the patience to beat the slow top score as that takes hours and is INCREDIBLY boring after the first hour! James said “Resist the Devil and he will run away from you.” (James 4: 7) Peter wrote “Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Be firm in your faith and resist him.” (1 Peter 5Satan The devil always goes to far and when he does so, God turns the tables on him and uses it for our deliverance and our enlightenment. I.E. The Red Sea, Haman vs. Mordecai, Job, etc. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people he didn't exist. Mostly the hijras prefer young pre pubescent kids who are very good at giving the hijra a full body massage and get paid handsomely too, some get laid handsomely too I am told.. The masseurs both at Ajmer Sharif and Haji Malang make a neat packet most of them hail from villages near Bareilly UP.. .. The masseurs from Bareilly also visit Mumbai during the Urus of Makdhoom Shah Baba Mahim and the Urus of Baba Fakhruddin Mahim main road. In Mumbai these are the only two dargahs I visit I was never a Sufi adherent being happy with my Shia roots and this year I became a Dam Madar Malang because of the Malang state of mind and thought , I have a Malangs temperament and becoming a Malang is nothing but an extension to my firm Shia faith .. I dress like a Malang and have a Malang like view of life , I do the kaif.. and becoming a Malang at Ajmer has bought me closer to the life of a Fakir.. I get calls from Malangs all over India ..and feel happy that I am part of them..Dam Madar Beda Par..
