Must give money to Disney...

Must give money to Disney...

Here's an example of boneheaded marketing:

"You get rewarded for doing what you and your family love doing already - buying Disney movies on DVD!"

Yessiree, there's nothing I like more than shoving the family into the minivan, heading out to BestBuy and buying DVDs! We don't really watch 'em, we just get an intense feeling of pleasure and familial bonding when we send our money to the Walt Disney Company.

And here's a hint: how about you actually sell some Disney movies on DVD, instead of repeatedly shoving them into that dank sphincter, the "Disney vault"?

Pedometer Sync

Pedometer Sync

I'm such a geek, but I just love being able to sync my pedometer with tracking software on my computer via USB. The software is PC-only so it's running in a virtual machine using VMWare Fusion, which has been a great application for me because I can use Windows as though it's just another Mac application - and it's fast, too! The Omron software lets me see my walking activity at several levels of granularity, down to hour of the day, and shows everything in both aerobic and total steps.

The wellness campaign for Tulane employees includes a walking program designed to help participants gradually achieve a healthy goal of 10,000 steps per day. Walking groups will take place before work, during lunch and after work for about 25 minutes. Groups are meant for anyone, at any fitness level.
Participants who register for the program, wear a pedometer and log their steps on the website have a chance to win gift-card incentives.

National Geographic Taiwan cover

National Geographic Taiwan cover

January National Geographic Taiwan edition, with one of the picture i took last september in North Korea during Arirang.
When i started photography, 3 years ago now, i told my friends that once i'll do the Nat Geo cover, i'll stop!
Well, i'm a little bit embarrassed with my bet now!

All over the capital, the Arirang adverts (« Grand mass gymnastic and artistic performance », « Welcome to Pyongyang » and so on) warn the profane…Between August and October, takes place one of the biggest and most impressive performances in the world. The tone is set : even the Beijing Olympics ceremony can’t compete with the mass games organized by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The show is held several times a week and welcomes tourists from all over the World, including the US, in one of the most isolated and despised country on earth. The well-called « mass games » are designed to emphasize group dynamics rather than individual performances as the supreme emblem of communism. Prepared by hundred of thousands performers all along the year, after their classes for the youngest of them, they are entirely dedicated to the NK’s leader Kim Jong Il and his deceased father Kim Il Sung, considered as the « Eternal president » and « sun of the 21st century »…

In the surroundings of Pyongyang's May Day giant Stadium, two girls are running to perform for the Arirang show. They are already dressed in their gymnastic outfits, as well as some 100,000 others who participate to the performance. They all come to honour their self-proclaimed « dear leader » Kim Jong Il, after a very hard and gruelling training, since their earliest age. Yet, it has been many years that Kim Jong Il has not shown up, formally for business reasons. But officials now admit the western medias’ assertions of illness. Anyways, Kim Jong Il or not, the mass games are held every year in Pyongyang, as a means for the regime to show to the entire world the country’s strength and good shape. To reach this sole purpose, not less than 100,000 people are involved in a choreographed show of simultaneous dancing and gymnastics. Many symbols are displayed by thousands of trained athlets, whether they are adults or even children. Hand over their heart, the young pupils sing in chorus "We are the happiest children in the world", one of the famous propaganda songs in North Korea. Many dancers make movements either with ribbons or colourful flowers named « kimjonglias » after the leader Kim Jong Il. All along the show, a live band plays a ceremonious music.

On the background, some 20,000 young koreans sit on the terraces, facing the spectators. They flip coloured cards at a high speed to form a fresco of animated and detailed images, changing from one to another. Each time they turn the page to create a new giant picture, they cry out. It creates a awe-inspiring atmosphere, as the shout is mixed with the noise of thousands of pages turned at the same moment. The figures are stunning : to compose these images, 2000 children are needed to make only one soldier, 20,000 for a north korean flag. Hiding a much more grim reality, the panels represent Pyongyang enlightened by night, wheat fields ready for harvest, scientists at work, atoms as symbols of the nuclear bomb and others for the reunification of two Koreas. One of the North Korea’s myths (history according to them) is recounted by the means of a huge image made by thousands of children. It represents the two pistols reportedly used by Kim Il Sung, when he founded the Anti-Japanese People’s Guerrilla Army in 1932. When the pistols appear, the audience applauses loudly. Among them, many soldiers attend the show as the ultimate award after years of good and faithful service. The thousands and thousands of boys and girls involved create a giant mass movement in the stadium which leaves the public stunned. These talented performers are used to that kind of performance: in North Korea they have to dance, sing, jump and spin around as many times as there are celebrations, always in praise of their leaders. There are mainly two sorts of shows. The first one is the classical artistic show, named "Arirang" after the famous korean folk song (whose story sometimes changes, but most often recounts the legend of a disappointed woman who hopes that her lover will return to her –metaphor of the break-up with South Korea). The second one is a more political show, which was untitled in 2008 "Prosper our country" and intended to show the country’s greatest achievements and its struggle against the foreign oppressors.

The show continues in the same way for one hour. Thereafter, the thousands of people present vanish in the dark and silent streets of Pyongyang, which contrast with the flood of lights and music in the stadium. Within the space of a few hours, it gives us a a strange feeling, between the real and unreal, of another universe both terrifying and fantastic.

Dans toute la ville,

Through the Wormhole

Through the Wormhole

I have been completely engrossed in the "Through the Wormhole" series with Morgan Freeman. Everything is just SO interesting. Big Bang theory, atomic theory, evolution, space, life on other planets, etc. I just can't get enough of it. After watching, I'll read anything I can find on the internet about it all. I just want to know everything about everything all around me. I am not a "blind faith" kind of person. I have trouble believing in things that have no proof and no way of proving. I'd rather live my life questioning everything, than just accept what is put in front of me.

I have mentioned before how much I love National Geographic, Discovery and The Learning Channel, etc. I think if I had to choose between learning channels like those, or ones that have pop culture updates and gossip, I'd totally choose to expand my brain. :)

I just love having random information and facts and knowledge. I enjoy being a mile wide and an inch deep!

14 pole position set anne marie losique tv show

MARDI LE 3 MARS
POLE POSITION : NOUVELLE EMISSION D’ANNE-MARIE LOSIQUE

----

That's the official press release. Now my story.

I told my editor I would cover this event without really reading the press release. I saw the name Anne-Marie Losique and tv show and thought, just go do it. It'll be news sensationalistic (is that a word cuz if it ain't I'm still using it) similar to taking pictures of a train wreck.

I read the press release properly after I said I would do it. My instincts told me to not back down and just do it. So I did.

Anne-Marie Losique is a kind of local celebrity. Celebrity might not be the right word. More like notorious. She used to VJ on Musique Plus. Her dad is known for running the Montreal Film Festival (before it went to the dumps). Ben Affleck did an interview with her sitting on his lap but he's also been known to hang out at Wanda's during Jennifer Lopez and before Jennifer Garner. Losique is now known to do these notorious pay per view tv shows or those really late night cable channels.

Well, I must say whomever did the PR people on this really know how to spin the event. I went thinking there would be an actual pole competition. I want to believe that it can be acrobatic and gymnastic like. Ahem. Not quite. They focused on the strip club theme instead and no poles to be seen.

Actually, I showed up late. Everything happens late in Montreal so I figured if I was 10 minutes late, I would still be on time. Who knew, news photographers were such spanksters. Supposedly, they showed up really early and sped up the process. So I missed the whole photo op thing. One of the other photographers showed me what I missed. Basically, it was the Hawaiian Tropic bikini line up.I scrambled to get as many shots as I could get. Luckily my editor called their people and they helped me get a few shots as most of the girls had disappeared and so did the real photographers who have print deadlines. A few spanksters were left and me.

I managed to take a few pictures of the judge. I didn't catch her name but she was a pretty girl from Halifax, Nova Scotia, underneath all that caked up a la Hugh Hefner wife wanna be stuff. The thing that gets me is that these girls are just that, girls. She was sweet and genuine. You could see she was really was pretty underneath it all. She smiled easily and seemed sincerely surprised that she was getting so much attention. She's probably smarter than she gives off if she manages to make her living traveling across Canada. I want to attribute ambitious to her personality and I have to admit she was likable.

Then we had the Suicide Girls. One girl kept taking off her top and pushing her boobies like they needed to be put back into place and did one interview sans bikini top. It kind of bothered me but I suppose for her, it was just another day of work. I kept looking at these two and thinking they must barely be over 18. Take off the "stuff" and they're just regular girls. Was it wrong for me to take their picture even though they wanted us to? They are someone's daughters... I dunno...

Then there's Anne-Marie Losique who stayed around, did interviews and posed for the cameras. I quietly took a few shots of her as she interviewed which would have been fine by me but the PR guy set up a scene for the remaining photographers but I think mostly for me and another guy who must have missed the beginning too. We got the make out session. This woke me up as to where I was. I can hear you guys, "OooOOOoOo girls, you're so lucky." Personally, I don't consider myself lucky but I am surprised at myself. This event has made me realize that I really am a photojournalist. I wasn't shocked on site, I focused on getting pictures. I wasn't freaked out too much by the set or the boobies or spanksters. I did my job and left. I also didn't touch anything. When I got outside of the club, I realized what I had done. I suppose this is where I also mention that television has numbed me. Having watched Californication and Nip/Tuck, this was not shocking as I thought it would be.

When it was all over, I stood outside in the cold for a while to set my bearings straight. Not sure my moral compass is back

First ever Pano! Kids on sofa watching TV

First ever Pano! Kids on sofa watching TV

29/365 After 2 Photocamp sessions (09 and 2010) on panoramas with @ASBO_Allstar FINALLY downloaded the superb HugIn software (free) on my MacBookPro. OK, so I haven't really run through the tutorials, or even pulled out my notes from PhotoCamp, but I just wanted to give it a very quick try. So, took a load of snaps of the kids when they were entranced by Angelina Ballerina on TV tonight before bed (only time they're still enough for multiple shots). iPhone camera, which meant the exposures varied from shot to shot etc., and I don't suppose I did a very good handheld job of keeping the sensor in roughly the same place for each piece. But I dropped it all into HugIn, and although it told me it was a terrible match and needed manual sorting out, I've loaded it here 'as is'. I think it's done a pretty remarkable job for a piece of free software that I haven't much of a clue how to use...!

auction "wins" 2/15-3/8/2011

auction

My BOE (bought on you-know-where) set will be joined by a new set this month: SOE (sold on you-know-where). Has to be my new rule. List one item for every one you buy. (or even better, buy none and list a zillion)

(1) Francie lace stockings to go with the 1974 Best Buy outfit #7794 that I just bought. Will look great with the lace trim.

(2) Skipper or Francie or Barbie (?) white gloves - I never seem to have enough of these, and this pair were a good price on BIN.

(3) Not actually bought on eBay, but I didn't want to make a special mosaic or set for purchases from Nancy's Dreamhouse Dolls. This is the dress/hat for See Worthy. DollyKnickers is my first choice for making a new scarf and socks to complete this outfit. Think I'd like hers better than the originals. If you haven't checked out her sewing and fashion design, you should!

(4) Minty shoes for See Worthy that I paid too much for on eBay. I just couldn't stand settling for faded out or discolored ones. Why is it always the shoes that jack up the price of an outfit?! LOL

(5) Another purchase from Nancy's Dreamhouse Dolls. This was a GREAT price for this outfit MIP. I did a double take when I read the price.

(6) Skipper dress was a great deal at Nancy's Dreamhouse Dolls. Thinking about possibly having it remade into a vintage Tuttie outfit, or that elephant stuffed animal in the same print. Or maybe Skip will wear it as-is.

(7) Francie Tenteriffic picked up as a BIN at what I think was a fair price. Hope to find the hat soon, along with the other shoe. I'm bidding on a hat right now on eBay that is in terrible shape, so fingers crossed. If you are also looking for this hat, please don't bid ;-P

(8) PJ head that I got cheap from Nancy's Dreamhouse Dolls. Thought I would have her rerooted into a Midge hairstyle and put on a standard straight-leg pink-skinned body. Now, I've restyled her haircut a bit and may just leave her alone. She's a lot prettier in person than in this photo.

(9) I'm planning to sell a Skipper in her box soon and thought I'd get more by including these with her. I already have a stand and swimsuit for her, along with a headband. Just missing the wrist tag and liner. Wish Mattel would offer reproductions of the wrist bands and box liners and sell them separately. They would make a fortune from collectors.

(10) Couldn't pass up the great price on this. Think I need one for my Open Road repro to replace the tacky one that Mattel included. If not, I'll sell it with a Ken outfit.

(11) Bought a lot of these. Promised myself to sell one Skipper for every booklet that I bought. Baby steps. Baby steps.

(12) Bought a lot of these, too. Same deal with these, except the ratio is one Ken must go for every booklet in the lot. I've got swimsuits and stands for them all, but I like including booklets with them, too. I try to be a first class seller and either offer bit by bit or as complete as possible.

(13) LALKA OUTFIT!!!! YAY!!!! Bought from Joey. Now my Lalka has a choice of genuine fashions.

(14) Samurai fan to go with that Ken kimono I bought earlier.

(15) Action figure stands so that all of my Star Wars guys will stop falling over.

(16) Four collector's books. I think I accidentally bought two of the first one. Got confused in my monster of a watched-auctions list and bid on one while using BIN on another...LOL 1st time for everything. If I actually win the auction, I guess I'll resell it or give it to a friend.

This list does not include 1/6 action figure stuff. *Ugh*

Yashica Electro 35 GSN with Case Range Finder and Wide & Tele Lens Set

Yashica Electro 35 GSN with Case Range Finder and Wide & Tele Lens Set

...I just won an eBay auction! And this time it wasn't 'by accident,' oh no. I CAMPED ON THIS BITCH ALL MORNING, and didn't make my move until there were only 58 seconds left.

Coming my way soon is a Yashica 35mm camera with flash attachment, case, lens cap, wide angle and telephoto lenses, what looks like a manual, and a finder. I got the whole shebang for US $65.00 AND free shipping. W00t!

The Yashica auctions I watched this week tended to close between $40 and $70 for the camera alone; some of the 'buy it now' auctions are offering Yashicas for $50 to $100. The lens set itself starts at $25. That said, I feel like a got myself a pretty good deal!

I bought a battery adapter seperately because it was cheap and seemed nicer than trying to jury-rig it.

I am seriously done buying cameras for awhile now. Seriously.

Donga stick fighting - Ethiopia

Donga stick fighting - Ethiopia

The man on the picture is a Surma warrior. He is ready to fight with the stick he's got in his right hand. The fight is very impressive to watch, and dangerous too as they just do not care about what's happening around! On his left hand, he has a shield to protect the fingers. I saw a warrior who had 10 fingers broken... They must not show any pain during the fight. On the left hand too, you can see some necklaces: they have been offered by girls to him. You can count: he has many girlfriends! Surma can have sex with girls before wedding, as much as they want, and can, but atfer wedding, girls must remain with their husband only while the man can marry many women.
The less the warrior wears some protection (like this one has an helmet on his head), the more he's strong. So we can say this one is not strong!
Mursi tribe also have the same tradition.
One of the main Surma / Suri customs is stick fighting. This ritual and sport is called Donga or Sagenai (Saginay). Donga is both the name of the sport and the stick, whereas sagenai is the name of the stick-fighting session. Stick fighting is central in Suri culture. In most cases, stick fighting is a way for warriors to find girlfriends, it can also be a way to settle conflicts. On this occasion men show their courage, their virility and their resistance to pain, to the young women. The fights are held between Suri villages, and begin with 20 to 30 people on each side, and can end up with hundreds of warriors involved. Suri are famous for stick fighting, but they are not the only ones to respect such a custom, as the neighbor tribe, the Mursi, also practice these traditional fights
The day before the sagenai, fighters have to purge themselves. They do it by drinking a special preparation, called dokai, which is made of the bark of a special tree, which is mixed with water. After taking it, warriors make themselves vomiting the drink. The water is supposed to bring with it many of the body’s impurities. After this ritual they don’t eat until the following morning. Warriors walk kilometers to come fighting at Sagenai, which takes place in a clearing. They stop when crossing a river in order to wash themselves, before decorating their bodies for the fight. They decorate themselves by sliding the fingers full of clay on the warrior’s bodies. This dressing up and decoration is meant to show their beauty and virility and thus catch the women’s attention. The phallic shape ending the sticks contributes to that virile demonstration.
Fighters arrive on the Donga field all together, carrying the strongest man, dancing and singing. Some fighters wear colourful headdresses sometimes with feathers on it, and also knee-protectors. But most of them use no protection at all and fight completely naked in order to show their bravery. They also wear strings of decorative coloured beads around their necks given by the girls and waist, but their genitals are most of the time uncovered and they are barefoot.
All of them get a chance to fight one on one, against someone from the other side. In the beginning each fighter looks for an opponent of the same stature, and exchanges a few held back blows with him in order to test him. If both fighters feel they have found a match, they suddendly throw themselves into the fight, hitting ferocious fast strokes with their sticks. If one of the warriors knocked out or puts paid to his opponent, he immediately declares himself the winner. Sagenai consists in qualifying rounds, each winner fighting the winner of a previous fight, until two finalists are left.
It is strictly forbidden to hit a man when he is down on the ground. During these fights there are referees present to make sure all rules are being followed. Many stick fights end within the first couple of hits. Nevertheless the fights are really violent, and it is quite usual to see men bleeding. Stick fighting has proven to be dangerous because people have died from being hit in the stomach. Loosing an eye or a leg during the fight is quite common, although it is strictly forbidden for a fighter to kill his opponent, and if a fighter gets killed during the fight, his opponent and all his family are banned from the village for life.
For the other locals, especially teenagers, sagenai is a great outing. Girls watch the fights, but it is also the occasion to check out the men, and to meet in order to chat or even gossip.
At the end of the fights, the winners point their phallic sticks in direction of the girls they want to date with, if the girl put a necklace around the stick, it means she is willing to date the champion. Sometimes a group of girls is presented to the champion, who previously which one of them would date the him.
Since stick fighting draws a large audience, it becomes dangerous. For the audience the risk of being hit, is not to be underestimated. Shooting can also easily break out and this seems to be the new trend for young Suri men using AK-47 (Kalashnikov)

Surma boy at Donga stick fighting - Ethiopia

Surma boy at Donga stick fighting - Ethiopia

The Surma stick fighting, aka the Donga, is a tradition in the area: hundreds of nude warriors come to fight with giant sticks. Just for the fun, the honour, and the glory you can get with the girls!
So while the adults fight, the little kids also tain around, very seriously, half hidden by the giant herbs of the area!
The Donga is not made for tourists. There was no tourists when i saw it, just another photographer, Hans Silvester.
Shooting can also easily break out and this seems to be the new trend for young Suri men using AK-47 (Kalashnikov) instead of sticks. The risk of being shot is all the higher as spectators and participants drink gesso, a thick local beer made from fermented maize, and are often quite drunk during the Sagenai.
It’s quite common to see men carrying weapons which are part of the daily life. Their remote homeland has always been a place of traditional rivalries with the neighbouring tribes such as the Bume (Nyangatom) or the Toposa. wh

1975

1975

November is a blur.

One huge blur.

But 1975 suddenly is not.

My father came down from NY this November 28th, 2010.
We have had a troubled road, my father and I.
He called on me out of the blue, like always this man does.
Talked like we had been talking weekly and our lives were somehow part of each others, when indeed, they are not.

He needed help.
His wife couldn't get away from work as the art gallery had a huge opening...
He needed a next of kin to be there while he had a very serious surgery.
2 doctors world wide have the skills and training to do the job, one in NE Florida, the other in California.
He needed me.
Me.
His oldest spawn.
We go years with out talking.
and he needs me.
... and I am there.

But it wasn't always that way.
-being void in each others lives.

It has stirred something up inside me.
Good, yet uncomfortable.
Like I wonder if he'll disappear from my life again?

He always seems sincere, and perhaps he is...
but it always turns in to stretches of weeks, months, and then more...
no calls.

I have his address, home, and cell number and I could give him a jingle, and have...
But I have this thing, pride perhaps, that he's the grown up, and still more grown up than me even though I'm 40, that HE should be the one to make an effort.

But it's the silence I loathe.
The unpredictable...
The fear of the unspoken.
I H.A.T.E it.

He flew in this week.
We met for coffee at my nanny's...
He had no idea we'd all had a falling out ... our that I had fallen out from the family he said...
but he knew I'd put put some weight back on.
(Thanks nanny for always bringing up the best in everyone, Eh?)

Now, this diary entry will be novel length.
My God, I haven't written in weeks.
I am busting at the seems to talk about this week.
But for some reason I feel heavily guarded about it all.
Strange.

This visit was different.
I haven't talked about all that was revealed and perhaps it's easy here because while I type...
no reaction, just me and a keyboard, oh...and cyberspace.

My dad got weepy on me the day before he was to go under the knife.
He pulled out his black tri-fold wallet and behind his cards, money and pictures of his current family, he pulled out a little carefully folded paper and in it were 3 old photos.

My father as a young man, me in Kindergarten and then this one - which I haven't seen before - of my mother and I.
How the hell did I not know about this photo of myself and the mother who raised me?
What gives?
It's not even candid.
So odd.

I asked him where they came from and he said they'd been in his wallet since 1975... that's not really what I meant, but he went on...
They have NEVER been out of his wallet for more than a moment since 1975 while he looked at them and that he looks at them often (I can tell) and that he has many regrets about my mother and I... but the paths in his life took him to places that were safer with me and the woman he still loves to this day, at near opposite ends of the cont. US.

He went on that he has always loved me, loved my mother, and wishes things had been different.

Now, I spent my life never hearing a foul word about my father.
My mom was good like that aside of any other flaws she might have had as a young, single hippy raising a girl in Florida in the 70's.
The woman worked her ass off to raise me with out a penny from this man.
Never said a slightly off thing about him.
EVER.
I was flown to and from NY and NJ more times that I can count to see him when it was "Good timing" be it summer, Holiday vacations, or long weekends... sometimes for just a couple days.
It was always a moments notice for her and she obliged and sent me on my way with little Delta wings pinned on my seer sucker dresses and a smiling stewardess... waving goodbye to me, telling me to have a wonderful time and she's be there waiting when my visit was over and count the steps on my way up the statue of Liberty and when I waved from the arm look south and she'd know and although I couldn't see her, she'd be waving back.
I believed her.

My dad made sure to get me a window seat every time.
I loved to watch the blue Florida ocean, white sands and people become nothing more than color.
I often found myself holding my breath when the clouds surrounded and engulfed the plane like cotton.
I'm still not sure why.
It wasn't fear.
Who knows.
Then, as if I had flown to another part of the world, like Spain or something, the huge skyscrapers and a concrete jungle would come in to view.
No palm trees, lush landscape.
Buildings, huge massive glass windows and lights everywhere.
It was amazing!

My dad would be standing there.
Waving, picking up just as my mother had left off... assuming the parental role.

Black leather jacket.
Black jeans.
Black tee.
Black boots.
Dark glasses... inside even.
Scruffy face and full mustache.
Smiling with his slightly salt and pepper hair & strong squared off face

After the joy of waiting for my luggage, I'd always struggle to open

Fascinated by Black

Fascinated by Black

Finally broke out the fascinator today! I bought it last Summer at Target of all places. Today it made it's maiden voyage for our final mid-week Lenten service. I wonder what the person in the pew behind my thought? All I could think about was that reporter bitching about having to watch the runway show through Tavi's hat at NY Fashion Week.

Black feather fascinator: Target
Vintage black dress: Vintage Vogue
Sumbarine pin: The Antique Center
Black patent belt: borrowed from another shirt I own
Black sateen tights: ModCloth
Vintage 60's Williams black pumps: Vintage Vogue

About those black pumps... I found these superb shoes at Vintage Vogue - my favorite store in the whole wide world(!) - in near mint condition. They were missing the heel caps, which cost me peanuts to replace. I negotiated the price of the shoes down to $5.00. That's right, 5 dollars! They are from the 60's, but look timeless to me. For the price of a footlong I have the perfect pair of black-leather basic heels. Believe it or not, something my wardrobe was lacking prior.

Basilica di San Zeno - Verona

Basilica di San Zeno - Verona

Basilica di San Zeno - Chiesa di San Zeno Maggiore
