4 Lakewood, Wash. police officers murdered in cold blood - Nov. 29, 2009

4 Lakewood, Wash. police officers murdered in cold blood - Nov. 29, 2009

A gunman bursts into a coffee shop in Lakewood, Washington (sometimes called Parkland, Washington) which is about 40 miles south of Seattle, and opened fire on the four officers — three men and a woman — as they worked on laptops at the beginning of their morning shift. The officers killed in cold blood were identified as Sergeant Mark Renninger, Officer Ronald Owen, Officer Tina Griswold, Officer Greg Richards. The Lakewood Police Shooting has rocked the Lakewood Police Department in Pierce County, Washington as well as this close-knit community.

An aggressive manhunt is underway for “a person of interest” - a man identified as Maurice Clemmons, age 37 years old - in the Lakewood Police Shooting, also known as Parkland, Washington shooting. According to police, they suspect that the attacker may haven been injured when one of the officers struggled out the door and fired his gun at the attacker before dying. All hospitals are being checked for patients coming in with gunshot wounds.

The person of interest in this ambush, Maurice Clemmons, is currently under the state supervision of Department of Corrections with an extensive criminal past that includes a long history of violence. Michelle Malkin has a lot more on his history.

Maurice Clemmons had received a 60-year prison sentence in Arkansas in 1990 when he was 18 for burglary and theft of property. At the time of that sentencing, he was already a habitual offender serving 48 years for five felonies. And then guess what happened? Then Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas commuted his 95-year sentence in 2000, citing Clemmons’ “young age”. I wonder what Huckabee is thinking tonight? Well, to avoid a “Willie Horton” moment, we don’t have to wait long — he’s released a statement on his PAC website.

Over the years, Clemmons has had multiple felony convictions in Arkansas and Washington, but has been repeatedly released, sometimes over objections of prosecutors who put him behind bars. This time around, Clemmons had been released just six days ago from jail, where he had been held for several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child and assault on a police officer.

The officers the Lakewood shooter ambushed were Sergeant Mark Renninger, and Officers Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards. They were in full uniform and wearing bulletproof vests. The officers, part of the city’s 100-member police force, had been with the department since it was organized five years ago. Here is a wee bit more about the officers who were killed:

Sergeant Mark Renninger was 39 years old and had 13 years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Officer Ronald Owen was 37 and had 12 years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his former wife and a daughter.

Officer Tina Griswold was 40 with 14 years of law enforcement experience. She is survived by her husband and two children.

Officer Greg Richards was 42 and had eight years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Swingin' on the Gallows Pole

Swingin' on the Gallows Pole

As the first sign reads:

The Gallows

With the largest criminal jurisdiction of any federal court at that time, the Western District of Arkansas handled an extraordinary number of murder and rape cases. When a jury found defendants guilty in these capital cases, federal law mandated the death penalty. In Fort Smith, that meant an execution by hanging on a "crude and insightly" gallows.

A visitor to the city in 1893 recommended constructing a new gallows to evoke the "sacredness and majesty of the law." This was never achieved and a year after the last execution, the city of Fort Smith destroyed the gallows structure.

Another sign reads:

Executions at Fort Smith

During the twenty-four years that federal executions took place in Fort Smith, eighty-seven men died on the gallows. While Judge Isaac C. Parker sat on the bench, 160 people, including four women, were sentenced to hang.
Just over half received a reprieve from execution through pardons, commutations, reversals or acquittals on appeal, or death in jail. The men listed below were henged in Fort Smith.
George Maledon, known as the Prince of Hangmen, served as executioner at over half of the Fort Smith hangings.

(The sign lists those that were hanged - I was not one of them - phew.....)

As the song goes:

Hangman, hangman, hold it a little while
I think I see my friends coming, riding many a mile

Friends, did you get some silver, did you get a little gold
What did you bring me, my dear friends to keep me from the gallows pole
What did you bring me to keep me from the gallows pole

I couldn't get no silver, I couldn't get no gold
You know that we're too damn poor to keep you from the gallows pole

Hangman, hangman, hold it a little while
I think I see my brother coming, riding a many mile

Brother, did you get me some silver, did you get a little gold
What did you bring me, my brother, to keep me from the gallows pole

Brother, I brought you some silver, I brought a little gold
I brought a little of everything to keep you from the gallows pole
Yes, I brought you to keep you from the gallows pole

Hangman, hangman, turn your head awhile
I think I see my sister coming, riding many a mile

Sister, I implore you, take him by the hand
Take him to some shady bower, save me from the wrath of this man
Please take him, save me from the wrath of this man, man

Hangman, hangman, upon your face a smile
Pray tell me that I'm free to ride, ride for many a mile

Oh, yes, you got a fine sister, she warmed my blood from cold
She warmed my blood to boiling hot to keep you from the gallows pole

Your brother brought me silver, and your sister warmed my soul
But now I laugh and pull so hard and see you swinging on the gallows pole
But now I laugh and pull so hard and see you swinging on the gallows pole
Swinging on the gallows pole
Swinging on the gallows pole

Patent Failure: How Judges, Bureaucrats, and Lawyers Put Innovators at Risk

Patent Failure: How Judges, Bureaucrats, and Lawyers Put Innovators at Risk

In recent years, business leaders, policymakers, and inventors have complained to the media and to Congress that today's patent system stifles innovation instead of fostering it. But like the infamous patent on the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, much of the cited evidence about the patent system is pure anecdote--making realistic policy formation difficult. Is the patent system fundamentally broken, or can it be fixed with a few modest reforms? Moving beyond rhetoric, Patent Failure provides the first authoritative and comprehensive look at the economic performance of patents in forty years. James Bessen and Michael Meurer ask whether patents work well as property rights, and, if not, what institutional and legal reforms are necessary to make the patent system more effective.
Patent Failure presents a wide range of empirical evidence from history, law, and economics. The book's findings are stark and conclusive. While patents do provide incentives to invest in research, development, and commercialization, for most businesses today, patents fail to provide predictable property rights. Instead, they produce costly disputes and excessive litigation that outweigh positive incentives. Only in some sectors, such as the pharmaceutical industry, do patents act as advertised, with their benefits outweighing the related costs.
By showing how the patent system has fallen short in providing predictable legal boundaries, Patent Failure serves as a call for change in institutions and laws. There are no simple solutions, but Bessen and Meurer's reform proposals need to be heard. The health and competitiveness of the nation's economy depend on it.

when there is no doctor

when there is no doctor

i never was able to get the story of exactly what caused her injury. regardless, it was the treatment that left me in awe. living in an isolated village in west india, there was not only no doctor nearby, her family had no means to pay one. so, being a seamstress, her mother repaired the laceration herself. sans anesthesia, of course.

as my country continues to writhe in debate over the revamping of its health care policies, and i am plunged into the middle of it by working with an underserved, underinsured population, i am continually reminded by my travels that we are so far beyond that to which most of the world has access.

which is nothing. nothing more than a non-sterilized needle and thread and a mother putting aside the screams of her baby daughter to close a wound that, if left unattended, would have likely led to a life-threatening infection, or at least far worse scarring. she did a damn fine job of it, all things considered.

this is where i want to bring the politicians. this is where i want to bring the med-mal attorneys. this is where i want to bring the execs of the pharmaceutical companies. look at her, i want to scream. look at her face and still tell me you are doing the best you can. i dare you.

Healthcare Reform: Yes!

Healthcare Reform: Yes!

I support healthcare reform. I hope others will join me in posting their photos expressing their support for a universal healthcare system in the U.S. Especially as an antidote to the crazy townhall meetings that make it look like the citizens of this country don't want change. We do. Here are my reasons:

I want healthcare reform because I'm tired of choosing jobs based on the health insurance options. And I want healthcare reform because I can't afford my deductibles and copays, even though I have health insurance. I want healthcare reform because I'm tired of corporations dictating the care me and my family receive. I want healthcare reform because I've lived in places where it works and it's magnificent to not worry about whether you can afford to see a doctor or not.

Howlin' Wolf 1970 (Via Faulty Polaroid)

The Oldie interviewed the legendary bluesman in 1970, in this dingy Toronto hotel room, armed with a cheap Polaroid camera that proved faulty, (chemical soup time). This was the only rescue-able shot, and its fatal flaws actually give it a kind of funky grit (that's my story and I'm sticking to it...).

Mr. Burnett ended up playing a bunch of songs for me before I left, and told some tales of Mick & Keith that no lawyer would ever let me repeat...
