Take Shelter

Like the recent "Contagion," Take Shelter presents a civilizational doom scenario. In the former the threat is an actual global pandemic; in the latter it's a series of powerful visions and dreams experienced by a working-class man Michael Shannon in northeastern Ohio. A sort of construction engineer, he lives in a dead-quiet suburb with his pretty, pleasant wife Jessica Chastain, in a role very similar to the one she played opposite Brad Pitt in "Tree of Life", filmovizija and their 8-year-old-ish daughter who is afflicted with deafness of apparently recent, but never-explained, origin. Out of nowhere he starts having weird dreams: he is standing in a rain that has the consistency of motor oil; his dog goes berserk, breaks free from his chain and tries to gnaw his arm off; shadowy figures break into his car and yank his daughter out, then try to yank him out. Eventually he begins having filmovizija, waking visions of vast flocks of birds in bizarre formations, explosions of thunder that no one else hears, crows dropping dead from the sky.
