Airport Motel

Airport Motel

This motel is connected to the back of a furniture store and really has a bit of a skeezy reputation of renting by the hour... though I don't know if it's true or well deserved.

I've been meaning to photograph the sign for a while, there used to be a lot of motels on this stretch of land, but they're gone or repurposed now except for this one.

I like the airplane in the "O"

It was taken through a car window, so excuse the wires and such.

EDIT: The Airport Motel burned down, October 2011.

203/365

203/365

Friday 22nd July, 2011.

This is Mum! Outside St. Peter's Basillica in the Vatican City! It was her birthday today so we tried to pack in as many awesome buildings into one day as we could! In the morning after a very nice breakfast, we got a taxi to the Vatican City. It was SO busy, despite it just being a Friday morning. The queue stretched right round the side of the massive circular plaza, so we decided not to queue up to see the Cistine Chapel, but to take in the sites and take the chance to buy postcards to send from the Vatican! (I didn't much like the postcards, but I will send one when I find a good'un.) We then wondered on down to find lots more amazing buildings. We had lunch in outside a lovely cafe, where the cars beeped and thrashed their way down the road beside us. Rome is NOT a quiet city, and the cars are frankly suicidal. We had a nice rest there before continuing on to the edge of the city to see the park and gardens which were a well-welcomed break from the hustle and bustle. We had a chill there before deciding to hire out a kind of hybrid semi-motorised bicycle/golf caddie for four. Mark and I spent a merry hour terrorising the peaceful inhabitants of the park and Mum and Dad were constantly scared of me tipping the darned thing and rolling it into a dusty verge. It didn't happen though, so soon we had a nice relax in a very posh cafe on the hilltop overlooking the whole of Rome. It was lovely, but swelteringly hot and I could feel the side of my face going crispy in the sun! We then went down the hill to find the Trevi Fountain which was staggeringly popular, and even more beautiful! We then had a look down rows upon rows of stupidly expensive high-street mega-stores… we went into Gucci and saw a belt, on the hook for $300 and quickly left the building. The prices were RIDICULOUS, but fun to observe nontheless. After that, I found a slightly more down-market shop where they were selling notebooks and I may have treated myself to a genuine Moleskine Biro… it was a little gluttinous, but such a nice pen! I couldn't help myself. After a relax and a beer in a nearby cafe, we got a taxi to the hotel to refresh before going down to a local restaurant called "Gastronomie" I had a massive plateful of mozeralla and parma ham, it was amazing! After that, we went up onto the rooftop bar of the hotel again, before retiring early to our rooms, absolutely shattered, burnt, withered and zombielike. Today has been an excellent day!

(P.S. Sorry about the crazy-long discriptions… they're more for my benefit than anyone else. Otherwise, thanks for looking/reading!)

Louis Jourdan

Louis Jourdan

Belgian collectors card by Fotoprim, Brussels, A 8. Photo: Universal International. Publicity photo for Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948, Max Ophuls).

Dashingly handsome French film actor Louis Jourdan (1919) is known for his cultivated, lead roles in several Hollywood films. With his polished good looks he often was typecasted as the old-fashioned European lover, but in the 1980’s he could broaden his range with character roles like the excentric villain opposite James Bond in Octopussy.

Louis Jourdan was born as Louis Gendre in 1919 (some sources say 1920 or 1921), in Marseille, France. His parents, Yvonne Jourdan and Henry Gendre, managed a string of hotels in Cannes, Nice, and Marseilles. One of his two brothers was the actor-director Pierre Jourdan. Louis was educated in France, Britain, and Turkey, and in 1938 he received his dramatic training with Rene Simon at the Ecole Dramatique in Paris. The following year he was discovered by a talent scout and debuted on-screen in Le Corsaire (1939, Marc Allegret) with Charles Boyer. He went on to play dashing young leads in French romantic comedies and dramas, such as La comedie du bonheur/The Comedy of Happiness (1940, Marcel L’Herbier) with Michel Simon and Ramon Novarro, and Premier rendez-vous/Her First Affair (1941, Henri Decoin ) starring Danielle Darrieux. Following the German occupation of France during World War II, he continued to make films including L’Arlesienne (1942, Marc Allegret) with Raimu and Gaby Morlay, and Les petites du quai aux fleurs/The Girls of the Quai aux Fleurs (1944, Marc Allegret) with Micheline Preseline, whith whom he was briefly married. After refusing to participate in Nazi propaganda films, his budding career was cut short. When his hotelier father was arrested by the Gestapo, Jourdan and his brothers joined the French resistance, and helped publish and distribute a newspaper for the Underground. After the 1944 liberation of France by the Allies, Jourdan married for a second time. This time with his childhood sweetheart Berthe Frederique, with whom he later would have a son. Shortly after the liberation, he was seen in leading roles in Felicie Nanteuil (1945, Marc Allegret) with Micheline Presle and Claude Dauphin, and La Vie de Boheme/La Boheme/The Bohemian Life (1945, Marcel L’Herbier), with Maria Denis. These were actually films which were already shot during the war, but Jourdan was the stand-out, and he became known as the most handsome French actor of his era.

In 1946, Louis Jourdan accepted an offer from Hollywood producer David O. Selznick to appear in the crime drama The Paradine Case (1947, Alfred Hitchcock) starring Gregory Peck and Alida Valli. He remained in the USA and went on to star in a number of Hollywood films, including No Minor Vices (1948, Lewis Milestone) with Dana Andrews and Lili Palmer, Anne of the Indies (1951, Jacques Tourneur) with Jean Peters and Debra Paget, comedy The Happy Time (1952, Richard Fleischer) with Charles Boyer, and Three Coins in the Fountain (1954, Jean Negulesco) with Clifton Webb and Dorothy McGuire. His Hollywood career was hampered by the limitations of the roles he was offered, most of which featured him as an old-fashioned European lover a la Charles Boyer. While he was memorable as the object of Joan Fontaine's secret longings in Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948, Max Ophuls), he went on to play similar roles opposite Jennifer Jones in Madame Bovary (1949, Vincente Minnelli) and Grace Kelly in The Swan (1956, Charles Vidor). In 1954 he made his Broadway debut in the lead role of Michel in The Immoralist. It was a success. He returned to Broadway for a short run in 1955 and that year was a hit on television as Inspector Beaumont in the series Paris Precinct. He also appeared in European productions, like the Boccaccio adaptation Decameron Nights (1953, Hugo Fregonese) with Joan Fontaine, Rue de l'Estrapade/Francoise Steps Out (1953, Jacques Becker) with Daniel Gelin and Anne Vernon, La mariee est trop belle/The Bride is Too Beautiful (1956, Pierre Gaspard-Huit) opposite Brigitte Bardot, and Escapade (1957, Ralph Habib) with Dany Carrel. However, he is best remembered for the musical Gigi (1958, Vincente Minnelli), based on the Colette novel. He played a French playboy in his late 30’s who seduced Leslie Caron the moment she came of legal age, while Maurice Chevalier sang Thank Heaven for Little Girls. The film earned nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In 1982, he played the Chevalier role in Gigi on stage, at the age of 63.

During the 1960’s and 1970’s he kept travelling between Hollywood and Europe. He starred in films like Le comte de Monte Cristo/The Count of Monte Cristo (1961, Claude Autant-Lara) with Yvonne Furneaux, The V.I.P.s (1963, Anthony Asquith) with Elizabeth Taylor, the tv film Run a Crooked Mile (1969, Gene Levitt) with Mary Tyler Moore, a tv version of The Count of Monte-Cristo (1975, David Greene), the

La Fontaine commemorative du jubile de diamant de la reine Victoria

La Fontaine commemorative du jubile de diamant de la reine Victoria

La Fontaine commemorative du jubile de diamant de la reine Victoria (Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Fountain) was inaugurated in along the eastern side of Square Dorchester on may 24, 1897, commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The lion was sculpted by George William Hill, who was inspired by the Lion of Belfort, atop a granite base by Robert Findlay. The fountain was the gift of the Sun Life Assurance Company, some ten years before it would decide to relocate to Dominion Square.

Crowned in 1837, Victoria, Quen of Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, was also Canada's sovereign. In the 64 years of her reign, Great Britain reached the height of its economic and imperial powers. Although it has long ceased to be a fountain, it still stands as a tribute to the strong attachment of Montrealers to the British empire at the end of the 19th century. When the Victorian era began, Montreal was still only a small city clustered around the port. By the time Victoria died, the city had become the financial and business heart of Canada.

Square Dorchester, part of Dominion Square until 1967, was developed along with the adjacent Place Du Canada between 1872 and 1892. After the death of Rene Levesque in 1987, Dorchester Boulevard was re-named in his honour and the park was re-named after Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester. The four principal monuments--the others being the Robert Burns Memorial, Sir Wilfrid Laurier Memorial, and Canadians in the Boer War Memorial--in the square are arranged to form an equilateral cross with the kiosk towards the Dominion Square Building.

Marcus Fenix Custom (NECA Gears of War Series 1)

Marcus Fenix Custom (NECA Gears of War Series 1)

NECA GOW Marcus Fenix is very special to me because Marcus is my first custom figure.
Few years ago (2009 or 2008?)I got the original Marcus and it is not a static figure but the elbows of figure are cut-joint designed. So, holding gun with both arms is the only pose Marcus can do and i very hate that.
Few months after, I find the other broken NECA figure ( I forgot which one) in second hand toy shop and suddenly had a crazy idea--"Can i cut off the shoulder joint to make Marcus's arms bendable?" then I start to try my crazy idea in different stupid way...
Ironically after i finished my customization, NECA released a "MORE ARTICULATION VERSION" of Marcus, NECA just did the same thing what I did....... oh my god~~~~ Neca, why don't you made this improvement earlier????

Leaving the Himalaya

Leaving the Himalaya

We took a jeep from Panikhar to Kargil and on to Srinagar in order to shorten this otherwise endless journey a bit. It took us a total of 9 hours on a road that is so narrow and in such bad condition that traffic is only allowed one way at a time. The scenery was amazing as we ascended towards the Zoji La (3570m). We saw glaciers, shepherds and prople who live in the valleys in tents during the summer.

Mets vs Cards

Mets vs Cards

From ESPN.com
NEW YORK -- Johan Santana was struggling. He had gone to 3-0 counts on four of his first 11 batters -- something he hadn't done in an entire game in six years, not counting intentional walks.

"My fastball," he said, "was moving all over the place."
Santana went back to the clubhouse and reviewed video following the first inning. He re-examined his mechanics.
Fast Facts

• The Mets won consecutive games for the first time in 16 days (June 7 and June 9).

• Johan Santana didn't allow a home run for the first time in his last eight starts. He got his second win in his last five starts.

• Nick Evans has four RBIs in three major league games this season, all with two outs.

• Chris Carpenter's three earned runs allowed tie the most he's allowed in any of his 10 starts this season.

-- ESPN Stats & Information

And he emerged victorious over Chris Carpenter in a sparkling matchup of Cy Young Award winners.
Nick Evans hit a two-run double in a three-run fourth inning, and the New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Thursday to win their first series since early June.
"I know I was going against a great pitcher," Santana said. "It was going to take one pitch or one mistake to change the whole ballgame."
A crowd of 41,221 was on hand, the largest in Citi Field history and the first sellout since opening day. In addition to the starters, fans were drawn by discounts of up to 50 percent on some tickets.
Even with Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, John Maine and Oliver Perez on the disabled list, the Mets took three of four from the Cardinals and closed within a half-game of NL East-leading Philadelphia heading into the first Subway Series at Citi Field.
Santana (9-5), the AL Cy Young Award winner for Minnesota in 2004 and 2006, made his second straight solid start since allowing a career-high nine runs in a 15-0 loss to the Yankees on June 14. He gave up two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in seven innings to win for the first time in three starts and lower his ERA to 3.08.
"The guy's no slouch," Carpenter said. "He knows how to pitch."
Santana's key at-bat came after loading the bases with a second-inning, two-out walk to Skip Schumaker. Santana started Albert Pujols with a fastball inside, then followed with a changeup. Pujols, who had been 5 for 5 with three grand slams with the bases loaded this year, hit an inning-ending flyout to Fernando Tatis just in front of the warning track in left at the spacious park.
"He just got himself out," Santana said.
Pedro Feliciano pitched a one-hit eighth, and Francisco Rodriguez finished for his 20th save in 22 chances. He struck out his first two batters, walked Pujols on four pitches and Ryan Ludwick on five, then retired Yadier Molina on a game-ending lineout to left.
"I think he likes the edge a little bit. I don't," Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.
New York had lost four straight series since winning two of three games at Washington from June 5-7. It doesn't get easier: The Mets face 2007 AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia on Friday and A.J. Burnett on Sunday.
"As a hitter, that's not much fun," David Wright said.
Carpenter (5-2), the NL Cy Young winner for the Cardinals in 2005, gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings.
St. Louis got an unearned run in the first on an RBI single by Molina that followed a catcher's interference call against Omir Santos.
Luis Castillo singled leading off the fourth for the Mets' first hit and Wright singled off Carpenter's glove, with the ball deflecting toward second baseman Joe Thurston. Tatis singled in the tying run with one out and Evans, dumped to Double-A after going 7 for 75 at Buffalo earlier this year, followed his two-run homer Wednesday with a two-out double into the right-field corner on a flat cutter.
"He keep hitting, he keep playing," Manuel said.
All St. Louis got after that was Thurston's two-out RBI single in the sixth.
"Just tough pitcher's luck," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "A groundball in the hole for hit. Then you get a double-play ball, deflects off the pitcher's glove. Evans put a great swing on it, and it's two runs."
Manuel will take it. He'd just rather avoid more tense games.
"I think they like making me old," he said.
Game notes
Santana had not gone to 3-0 counts four times without intentional walks since July 23, 2003, according to STATS LLC. ... The Cardinals outhit the Mets 8-5 but went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position and lost consecutive games for the first time since a five-game skid from June 8-9. ... Rodriguez isn't thinking about Yankees reliever Brian Bruney. The two nearly fought at Yankee Stadium two weeks ago. ... "I got better stuff to worry about," K-Rod said. ... Mets RHP John Maine (shoulder) is to make a rehab start Saturday for Class A Brooklyn at Aberdeen, and Oliver Perez (knee) is to pit

Nice Surprise...

Nice Surprise...

When I saw this in our hotel bathroom at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa I was pleasantly surprised! Of course, I had my own sharps container but I thought that was pretty cool. I felt "included" and like they thought of me :) LOL and yeah I know that sounds silly.

Las Vegas was pretty cool (just like last time :) ) I don't drink so I am always sober and get to watch everyone else get drunk off their butts and make fools of themselves...I LOVE people watching. it's better than prime time TV and even better: no commercial breaks!

I also loved the pool and huge hot tub like pool thingy they had :) I made sure I was in the 160's before I went into the pool to splash though because I knew I was gonna drop...and sure enough I caught a 62 a little later.

The night before we went to see The Last Airbender so while we were in the pool I was 'waterbending' which pretty much consisted of me making tai-chi-like hand movements and then at the end splashing water of course.....this little girl swam up to me with big eyes asked"are you bending water?" and I was like "I sure am" it was HILARIOUS! She was so serious too...she said "I can't waterbend...I can only do this" (as she splashes water) LOL

Yay for: pools
Yay for: catching lows
Yay for: Vegas

So tell me, what's your special hidden talent?

The powerful theme, 'women as agents of change' is amplified when we compare different generations of women. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Norma Braithwaite, a woman of the world and an agent of change. I am truly fortunate to know and maintain a close friendship with this wise woman. Norma has been a part of my life for approximately 20 years, as a nanny, a friend, and an overall woman to admire. She is a single mother, a loving grandmother, and a constant caregiver. When I heard about this competition?s theme, she was the first person that came to my mind. From her humble beginnings, Norma established herself as a hardworking individual. She worked most of her life as a housekeeper at a small hotel and afterwards as a nanny. Through hard work and perseverance, Norma was able to provide for her family, create a loving home and even in her retirement was able to buy the property that her and her daughter?s family call home; a big feat for a woman with few means. Norma is an agent of change because she has not passed on prejudices to her descendants; instead she has instilled strong values and good character to all the different generations of women that surround her. ?She is always encouraging her loved ones to succeed in life and strive to be the best they can be. ? Norma lives with her daughter and two granddaughters in a basic two-bedroom townhouse. One Sunday morning, I was able to visit and photograph the interaction they have with one another. The photograph I have submitted is merely one from many but it portrayed Norma?s strong character and her contentment with life. ? During my visit that Sunday, I noticed Norma was not as comfortable in front of the camera as her granddaughters. Norma was sheepish and avoided eye contact with the lens. Her grand daughters on the other hand were enthusiastically poising and jumping in and out of my frame. This photograph was the winner. The photo is of Norma sitting on her couch in her living room with her youngest granddaughter Kaiya on her lap. Norma after watching the young generation of women having fun with the all the photo taking, was able to relax and nearly forget my camera was present. When all settled Kaiya reached over to give Norma a hug, Norma paused and looked straight through my lens, I clicked and was able to capture this beautiful shot, full of expression. The photograph shows two generations of women, Norma with so much knowledge and Kaiya with so much potential. When I think of change, I think of all the positive values that are passed on from generation to generation and how each generation is encouraged to be their own individual and essentially reach for their own stars. ? Norma was a housekeeper. What will Kaiya be?

Friday night food stalls with dance party just beginning in the background, Oistins' Fish Market. I thought Friday Fish Fry was big in Wisconsin but the Bajans make it a celebration. As the food stalls were closing for the evening, I took this photo of a woman who had obviously put in a long day of work. The party had just begun - a group of more than 50 high school age kids were just arriving as the DJ's had the 2 dance areas rockin'. The crowd was a mix of locals, tourists and nearly every age group was represented. We took the public transportation to the market from our hotel in Christ Church - a small, overcrowded van that was in need of some maintenance. Apparently, tourists are not the typical passengers - you just kind of know when people give you that "What are YOU doing here?" look. Still, it suited us just fine and we enjoyed our meal and everyone was very nice to us.
