Anti-View from Room 411 BWI Airport Marriott I don't really expect to have a great view at an airport hotel. The view of the new Hilton from Room 411 is surely an anti-view if there ever was one. BWI Airport Marriott Built in the 1980s and still looks like it. The hotel still gets the job done- if without great excitement. Dianne & her Bubele Sorry for the small photo - this is the biggest it's going to get without being completely distorted. My kids like to play with the "photobooth" on my computer, so I decided to play along. Right.... 16 Things About Me: 1) I was born in car, a 1958 Studebaker Hawk. Apparently I was eager to come into the world. 2) I'm the middle child; I have one older and one younger brother. 3) I speak three languages: English, German and French, although I'm out of practice in the French. 4) My DH and I met on the first night of a beginner jewellery making class. We've been married since 2002. 5) I've been to Belgium for five minutes. Saw a bunch of cows and a road sign in French. 6) I have stuck my feet in the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Ligurian Sea, and the Adriatic Sea. 7) I think sleep is overrated, but I'm trying to get more of it. 8) Silliness is genetic in my family, and goes back several generations. We have a habit of making bunny ears in family photos. 9) I didn't get my driver's license until just before my 40th birthday. 10) I love romantic comedies, but ironically married someone who is not overtly romantic. 11) I dabbled in jewelrymaking in university but didn't come back to it seriously until 1995. 12) My first piece of wire jewellery was made in a bed and breakfast in Montreal on a visit to a friend. 13) I love photography. On my honeymoon I shot 17 rolls of film over the course of 2 weeks. Thank God for digital cameras! The developing costs were killing me... 14) I have recorded two music albums and self-published 5 books. 15) I hate housework. 16) My favourite time of year is the first three days of May, and always look forward to it. Mr.Kul - the General Manager of Hotel Lake Pichola, Udaipur, India Mr.Kul was invited by Karen to have the candlelight dinner with us at the hotel rooftop. The first sight I caught and first conversation I had with Kul gave the impression of such an athletic, well-behaved, quiet and sensitive man. I feel that we share the same personality / characteristic. After the dinner the next day, we chat into the night for extra couple of hours in his room# 103, sharing each views and perspectives to what we saw and what we observed. Eastern Oregon/Portland Family Trip July 2009 Geiser Grand Hotel, Baker City, Oregon. Mom & I went on a five day driving trip through Eastern, Oregon. Some highlights: Outsider Art Monument: Petersen Rock Garden in Redmond (friendliest peacocks I’ve ever met!). The John Day Fossil Area was amazing – the Painted Hills and Sheep Unit. At the latter we went down a trail called something like “Island back in time” and were mesmerized by the strange chalky green rocky landscape with no life growing from it. We were lucking out with 75 and Sunny in a place that can get 110 this time of year. The new Paleontology Museum is very interesting. I became obsessed with touring cyclists and wished I was on my bike. Even saw a group of 4 punk-style riders, with just boxes and blankets strapped to the back of their bikes. We barely made the last tour at the Kam Wah Chung Museum in John Day not knowing that you can only visit with a guide. This old apothecary/store/house set in what once was a Chinatown was really interesting to me. Then on to Baker City, Oregon which is really a great town – I walked around at Sunset and thought about setting up a portable press shop here for a month. We stayed in the Geiser Grand Hotel, which isn’t as expensive as you’d think, and my oh my were those sheets soft. The next day for the firs half of the we visited the National Oregon Trail Interpretative Center a top Flagstaff Hill, 5 miles outside of town. The museum got a thumbs down from me (too general, busy, not into taxidermy horses), But the center and walking trails are worth it and I loved visiting the actual Oregon trail and seeing the old wagon ruts. Mom and I realized that we could visit Hell’s Canyon afterall. I really wanted to go, but we didn’t want to hit gravel roads. We found there was a road to an overlook that we could take on our way to Joseph. We stopped in Halfway, Oregon and I got a chocolate milkshake. At the overlook in Hells Canyon there is a pretty amazing view of the nation’s deepest Canyon. You can’t see the floor or anything, and you feel far away, but it was still beautiful. In Joseph we didn’t like our stinky overpriced smelling cabin or the fact that everyone and their family seemed to be around the Lake in the Wallowas, but I took advantage of the pool/hot tub and beat my mom in Scrabble even though she made two whole words. In the morning we played mini golf at the resort while a couple long haired boys watched us. Mom loves Mini golf! We were going back and forth on whether we should take the Tram to the top of Mt Henry, we heard it was good, but wondering if we should get a move on. But luckily we decided to go. The weather was great and I couldn’t believe the Swiss Gondola style tram went an entire mile up. We were at over 8000 feet! At the top we were greeted by a gopher and a chipmunk, little did we know that we’d meet many more “friends” on our visit up there. We walked around the trails and had a very chipper time. On the way out of Joseph we stopped at the local county museum – I asked the friendly senior ladies what they liked most in the museum. One lady said the electric curler (a scary monstrosity!) and the other lady said a grade school exhibit from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Fair. I myself was amused by the Moonshine exhibit. I gave the one lady a painting I made of the electric curler and she was so pleased! We then drove through a few small towns and headed towards Pendleton, getting loss in La Grande on the way. Pendleton was so much smaller than I thought (all the round-up/blanket hype), but I enjoyed the murals, and my mom and walked on the riverwalk which was buggy at dusk. We played another game of Scrabble where I almost won, until I made a stupid fatal error on my second to last turn. In the morning (Saturday) we walked around town, but nothing was open and we looked like hick tourists. I guess all the action was on Friday night. Finally a few shops opened, but every one seemed to be selling old stuff – some of it good (the Curio shop!) some bad (beanie babies, and romance novel, now really!) And everyone wanted a lot of money for crap. We headed out of town (backtracking a few miles) to go to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute which in on the Indian Reservation. Right before we stopped for gas, and waited to be served (can’t pump your own gas in Oregon), but no one came, and then we realized, oh on the reservation you pump your own gas! The museum is past the casino that had a full parking lot. The museum lot only had three cars. I was really impressed with the exhibits and design and learned a lot about five Indian groups from the area. Outside it was heating up, planning on getting up to 100, I walked around displays of different kinds of Indian housing. We then headed down the Gorge towards Portland and watched the scenery slowly change from beige to green. We crossed the toll bridge at Hood River to Bingen to meet my Sister Sarah and 3 ? year old nephew Andy who were coming on the 6:20 train. They had a long day st Sheraton-Cleveland The back reads: SHERATON-CLEVELAND HOTEL Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio Tel: TOwer 1-8000 Teletype: 216-574-9796 "The best location in the nation." Vagabond Inn After driving around Bakersfield (our stop for the night), trying to find a motel with character, we stumbled onto a strip of old school motels with names like "Starlite" and "Tropicana." We tried to get a room at the Tropicana, but 3 things should tell you that its not a good place to stay: 1)vagrant meandering around the cars in the parking lot, 2)cash only 3)guy with mohawk yelling in Sly's ear. We abandoned the Tropicana and went to the safety of the well-lit Vagabond Inn instead. Beachportrait Wednesday June 22nd I went all the way upto the edge of Zandvoort, about one hundred metres before the NH Hoteles building. I hadn't gone this far yet but I had to, because this was where the people were. ---------- There were several groups of youngsters at this section of the beach and they were all kiting, they did not seem interesting to me today. I think they'll be there any of the other days. Amongst them there was an older man who wore a jacket with a high collar and a beany. Well suited for the windy beach. This German man did not want me to make a portrait of him but I did have a talk with him, to which he was very open. He was being a tourist, visiting a different Dutch city every day. Yesterday it was the Hague, the day before Rotterdam and tomorrow he'll visit Amsterdam and Marken the day after that, with a traveling group. He had visited the North sea more often but that was on a sail boat, so there was not much sight seeing going on. He was catching up I think. I wished him a good holiday and went to find someone for my daily portrait. At this section of the beach it was pretty crowded whereas the rest of the beach was virtually empty. This was probably because of the hotels near the boulevard. ---------- I came past two men, both taking pictures of the sea, the sunset and the kitesurfers with a big camera and an even bigger lens. I did not approach them because they looked like typical fanatic photo amateurs and I was not in the mood for boring talks about their lens collection. Hmm .. Is not gathering and liking to talk about the latest lenses anymore a bit of a justification for calling myself a professional? ;) ---------- Another older man with a jacket and a hat was taking pictures of his two grandchildren. Eldery people have more interesting faces to take pictures of. This man was also German and he also did not want his picture taken. He did not seem to have understood me the first time because when I told him about my project and when I got to the part of picture taking, he shook his head and turned his back towards me. He turned his attention back to his grandchildren and kept his back turned at me. I was left standing there as some kind of dimwit. I walked past him and he did not reply me when I wished him a happy rest of his holiday. A couple (also German) around their 50's that just came walking up on the beach also did not want me to take their picture. I needed to get away from the tourists. ---------- I walked a bit in the direction along with the couple that just turned me down, but then I'd get into the groups of kids again. I looked back and saw another couple just walking onto the beach. They were about 50 metres away from me and I did not really feel like walking after more people while being sandblasted. That choice seemed better to me than towards the kiting youth. ---------- They were a younger couple, around their 30's. They wore contemporary clothing and both of them wore sunglasses which they did not take off during our encounter. Luckily they were open to my idea, I finally found my subjects! He wanted to make sure that he got the photograph which of course is no problem. They came here from Amsterdam and the guy hadn't been on the beach for a year. He workes for the ING as an IT consultant in Amsterdam, to which he moved eight years ago. His girlfriend lived in Amstedam for four years now and she said that he had always worked in Amsterdam. During the conversation I had all the time to get my camera out and mount the flash on top. When I asked them where they came from, I was in for a nice surprise. They originally came from Twente which is an area in the Eastern part of the Netherlands in which the city Almelo, where I come from, also lies. I replied that I came from Almelo and the girl pointed at her boyfriend while saying he came from the same city. What are the odds! He even came from the same neighbourhood (Schelfhorst) as I. I made a portrait of them (in which I tried to wait for a non couple-smiling and posing shot) and we kept talking, while the hard wind was blowing cold in our ears, making it also difficult for the guy to understand me. I of course forgot to ask their names but the guy asked me for mine and we finally shook hands. I think my name triggered a string of thoughts in his mind and as I was putting away my camera, he asked me a question that made my jaw drop. Wasn't I the guy that was friends with those twins? Rob and Martijn? I was totally flabbergasted because was and I know them since kindergarten. Somehow the guy recognised my face but I still had no idea who he was, but he was only two years younger than me. I could still not believe that I had met these two of which one must have been in my close neighbourhood when I was a kid. An unbelievable story. Queen's Chapel near the Savoy, London, U.K. This chapel is the last surviving building of a hospital for homeless people founded by Henry VII in 1512. Hidden behind the hotel down Savoy Street, its angular Tudor lines and grand windows give the chapel a distinctive appearance suited to this upmarket part of town. Incidentally, it was the first place of worship to ever have electricity. The chapel is a remarkable piece of the infamous Duchy of Lancaster portfolio. Being the property of the Queen any expenses incurred by the chapel are borne by the monarchy. The chapel ceiling was restored to its rich splendour in honour of the Golden Jubilee. At the same time, the vibrant, elegant gardens were landscaped. 500 years later this enduring chapel is still providing spiritual guidance to the community. Members of the public are most welcome to join services at the chapel and all money received in collection is donated to charity. Regent Hotel and The Pantages Theatre The Pantages Theatre on Hastings Street, was built by Alexander Pantages in 1907 and was considered the oldest remaining vaudeville theatre in Canada. It was listed on Heritage Canada's 2009 Top Ten Most Endangered Places List and the Vancouver Heritage Register as a heritage building. It had been vacant since 1994. On September 30th, 2008, Vancouver City Council refused the proposal to restore the 650-seat Pantages Theatre. Since that time, the entire half block had been put up for sale. It is the oldest surviving Pantages Theatre in Western Canada. After the City of Vancouver rejected the renewal proposal the roof of the building collapsed due to the weight of years of water collection. Demolition began on this site this week...sad to see heritage buildings like this just go to waste over politcal red-tape. regent hotel ??2010 ???????????: ???…….??????????????,.????….etc,??????????????????????????????.?????????????. ????????????????????,.????,??? ???????????,??????????????????????,??????????????????????! ????? ????????????????.???????????????????????.?????????,????????????.????????????????! ????????????????.??????,??????????????,????????,??????????,??????!?????? ?????????,?????????????idea,?????????????????????,??????????,,,,,,,,,???? ???
