More info: The History of Denver details the history of the City and County of Denver, Colorado, United States. The Denver area, part of the Territory of Kansas was virtually unsettled until the late 1850s. Occasional parties of prospectors came looking for gold, then moved on. In July 1858, Green Russell and Sam Bates found a small placer deposit near the mouth of Little Dry Creek (in the present day suburb of Englewood) that yielded about 20 troy ounces (622 grams) of gold, the first significant gold discovery in the Rocky Mountain region. News spread rapidly and by autumn hundreds of men were working the along the South Platte River. By spring 1859, tens of thousands of gold seekers arrived and the Pike's Peak Gold Rush was under way. In the following two years, about 100,000 gold seekers flocked to the region.

The Blue Mustang (i.e., the horse from hell) at Denver International Airport

I almost missed my flight home searching for this sculpture, and once I found it, seeking out a decent perspective from which to capture it. Needless to say, it was worth it, because: a) I got a pic that I'm pretty content with; b) no one reported me running up and down highway embankments with a tripod and camera as suspicious (at least not that I'm aware of); and c) I made it to my gate in the middle of boarding. Total score.

On a different note, if I have any reason to fly into DIA again, it's to see this sculpture at night. As my girlfriend tells it, seeing the glowing red eyes of this sculpture in near blackness upon decent is very, very freaky. Oh yea, I guess I forgot to mention that this blue mustang has bright, glowing, red eyes.

I've always liked this airport. I took a shot of this last year when I arrived for another event. This one looks a little better. I am in Denver for a week to oversee the install and operation of a media lounge for the Democratic Convention. More to follow.
