Why is it that when you want to shoot a picture of a monorail there is not one to be found? Patience is not a virtue that I am know well for amongst my peers but one of the tranquil aspects of photography that I love is that if you wait long enough more often then not the picture will come to you. Odd isn't it? Such is the case on the photo above.

One Week in Tibet

One Week in Tibet

The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet - main residence of the Dalai Lama until the current one fled in 1959.
Tibet was a trip that I looked forward to with great anticipation, and now on reflection looking back I am somewhat disappointed.
The current Chinese government requires all travellers to have a personal guide throughout their journey in Tibet – so I had to sign up for a tour. I’m not a “tour” person and have always preferred to travel independently.
I joined a group of three kiwis – fortunately all were great company – on a “budget” tour run by Sichuan China International Travel Service (CITS) in Chengdu.
Logistics were a nightmare and the tour driver and (replacement) guide were consistently late or off running to get “permits” and such (usually as a result of them being too lazy to do it the night before). Really felt like wasted time and one reason why I prefer to do my own schedule!
The tour itself ran through Lhasa, Shigatse, Tingri, down to Everest Base Camp, and then on to Zhangmu (border city with Nepal). A fairly brisk pace was needed to see everything, but unfortunately with the above delays it always felt like we were missing things.
Lhasa itself was great to visit and we were fortunate to be there during one of the festivals and the city was awash in pilgrims. Visits to the Potala Palace, Johkang Temple, Sera and Drepung Monastaries were enjoyable (lots of pictures to follow).
Moving on to Shigatse we passed Yamdro-tso lake and karo-la glacier (both beautiful) and the Kubum monastery (lots of statues). I built a nice little stone statue overlooking Mt Everast at one of the high passes – my monument to eternity (or at least the next set of rains!). Unfortunately we arrived too late in Shigatse to see the monastery there.
We then took the Friendship Highway to Everest Base Camp… it’s bumpy, slow, and with multiple “checkpoints”. We were stopped by the police twice for our Toyota Land Cruiser being overloaded (too many people / bags). Lots of gorgeous scenery, however.
We stayed at the Rongphu Monastery and froze. It was December and the average temperature was at least -10 C. We were provided blankets but these were terribly insufficient. Having not been warned about the poor conditions, both myself and one of the Kiwis did not have sleeping bags with us (although we both had wonderful mummy sub-zero ones at home…). Likely the coldest night of my life (combined with a little bit of altitude sickness made it perfect!). The upside…. Some nice pictures of Mount Everast at night and in the early morning.
We wandered over to Base Camp 1, took a bunch of pictures (my camera froze up after 15 minutes, so I switched to blackberry!) and then eventually made our way to Zhangmu.
The drive to Zhangmu was surprisingly pleasant…. as you descended into lush green valleys and much warmer temperatures. The drive has even become safer (although still dangerous with falling boulders and waterfalls on the narrow roads).
Zhangmu itself is a port town full of seedy mystery and apparently lots of clubs / bars. Our first hotel was sold out (guides didn’t book ahead) and we settled for a second (and after some arguments a reasonable room). Wandering the city I took several nice pictures of the city on the hills with the sun setting. Zhangmu is the link between Nepal and Tibet and sees a hundred or more trucks a day at its crossing (it's even cheaper to make things in Nepal than China!).
From Zhangmu, I was supposed to return to Lhasa with the guide and driver… but having gotten sick of putting up with their antics I went with the rest of the group into Nepal (a great decision, even though I threw away my return leg from Lhasa to Hong Kong). Nepal itself… was great to visit and very interesting – more on that later!
Overall…. The food was decent, but a bit basic… lots of yak! Although pretty much everywhere you could get the western version of something if you weren’t feeling adventurous.
The accommodation was a continuous challenge… as opposed to my prior experiences, where I could pick and choose hotels / hostels and negotiate my own prices…. I was at the mercy of our guide and the pre-selected rooms – no hot water (unless you argued), no heating (unless you argued), etc… was frustrating and something I hadn’t experienced in my prior trips across China and other developing countries.
The drive alternated between interesting and monotonous… a good chance to catch up on your reading.
Altitude sickness… all four of us got it in varying forms. I flew in; the other three took the train from Xi’an or Beijing (“very neat, but after the first day a bit boring”). Meant you got dizzy quickly if you tried too much exercise (e.g., climbing lots of stairs), you were constantly out of breath, and in the evenings / mornings you tended to get a headache. I got a for Diamox, but didn’t use it…. Instead lots of a Chinese Gatorade-copy and the occasional ibuprofen tablet wor

Axalp Fliegerschiessen 2010 - A Guide

Axalp Fliegerschiessen 2010 - A Guide

I'd first heard of this airshow back in 2007. What I saw of the pictures that got sent around the little engineering office I worked in back then amazed me. Can you really go somewhere to watch F-5s and F-18s firing real 20mm rounds and not need a telescope to see them and camo to avoid being picked up by the police?

Seriously?

For one week a year in Switzerland, it turns out you can.

The Axalp Fliegerschiessen is a 4 day demonstration of the Swiss Air Force's firepower, that serves as a valuable training experience for the pilots and a pretty kickass show for the rest of us. Held in a valley in the Berner Oberland region of Switzerland, the day starts at the Axalp village (ca 1500m), and then begins a small stroll up to the top of the valley (a relaxing 800m climb). To do this properly, you have to start well before dawn and hike in the dark. The reward is a sunrise over the swiss alps and enough time for coffee, a quick snack and a breaky beer before the airshow. Brilliant.

If you are going to do this, do yourself a favour and don’t wimp out. Get up early, pipe yourself full of whatever gets you going in the morning and get walking! Sunrise is about 7,30 at that time of year, meaning if you want to be setup for the golden hour, you want to be at the ATC tower by 7am. It takes ~3 hours to get up there if you don’t use the chairlift.. do the maths!! I promise though that if the weather plays ball, you will be rewarded with a stunning sunrise over the valleys. Its a treat that is worth hiking up for in the dark just for that view. Whilst its not why you are making the accent, pack a landscape wide angle lens with a lightweight tripod as well. As there is plenty of fenceline at the top, you could get away with a gorilla pod type setup if you wanted.

The only way up to the village is via the tiny little access road. The width for this road never seems to become two lanes wide but there are plenty of passing spots along the way. In the week we were there we shared the road with cars, push bikes, trucks, busses, a herd of cows and a couple of tractors. Just be sure to take it very carefully, especially around the frequent blind corners. If in doubt, just catch the bus.

As of 2010 they have changed the rules on access to the village - Private cars are no longer allowed access to the village between 0500 and 2100 on the Wednesday and the Thursday. I don’t know what happens if you turn up before 5am with respect to parking, but we saw a few campervans that had setup in one of the village carparks. We did the easy thing and rented a small chalet apartment for the week, which was surprisingly cheap when split amongst a few friends.

The path up is well signposted and even in the pitch darkness of 5am there are plenty of people about pointing you in the right direction. That being said a map will never hurt you. If you have an iPhone then the excellent official Swiss Map app is well worth buying and will give you moving maps at 1:25000 res. Generally I always hike with a paper map as well and think that it’s bad practice not to, and there are plenty, including some free ones, that will cover you here. Some places suggest going up through the valley on the way up - we didn’t try that this time, but we did descend through it. Its very steep but far less crowded, which is the biggest problem on the main route. It is stunning in the afternoon sun as well, looks like its taken out of Lord of the Rings, especially with the little hut half way along. Just be carful on the decent and zig zag to loose height rather than just heading straight down.

A common theme you will hear about the event is the weather. Its mid autumn, 2km up - think about it!! It is going to be cold, even with the sun shining, and there’s a reasonable chance that the show will be shortened or cancelled if the weather even looks like it will turn. I think that now they are starting to charge for it they are less likely to cancel it due to bad weather in the valley (so it is less dependent on the VIPs being able to get up and back by helis) but this isn’t confirmed. Take decent shoes with good support. Take cold weather gear - think about thermals, beanies, gloves, etc. Sunscreen isn’t a bad idea either. A spare t-shirt is a good idea as well as you'll be sweating a bit at the top. Just think about it and don't be stupid - anyone that’s in reasonable fitness (say climb 3 flights of stairs reasonably quickly and not be falling over out of breath) and that wants to can make it. Just use your head and think to make sure that its not an uncomfortable trip.

Photo gear wise you really want to make some calls up front on this. Chasing the planes at entry and exit needs 500mm+, but panning the fast passes, especially the flare releases, wants something wider, maybe 50-80mm. A lot of people there were with the Canon 100-400 (me included) which is a reasonable compromise that will let you cover a lot of the action - and a damm good lens as well.

Ethel Merman

Ethel Merman

Ethel Merman, Queen of Musicals, Dies at 76

Ethel Merman, the musical-comedy star whose belting voice and brassy style entertained Broadway and movie audiences for 50 years, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment yesterday.

Miss Merman, who was 76 years old, had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor last April. The Medical Examiner's office reported yesterday that she died of natural causes.

The singer's booming voice was first heard on a Broadway stage in 1930 when she brought down the house singing ''I Got Rhythm'' in the Gershwin musical ''Girl Crazy.'' Her last major appearance in New York was in 1982, when she took part in a Carnegie Hall benefit concert.

Miss Merman's most memorable shows included Cole Porter's ''Anything Goes'' and ''Dubarry Was a Lady,'' Irving Berlin's ''Annie Get Your Gun'' and the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical ''Gypsy,'' which she considered her best. Her 14 movies included ''Alexander's Ragtime Band,'' ''There's No Business Like Show Business'' and ''It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.''

Beginning in 1930, and for more than a quarter of a century thereafter, no Broadway season seemed really complete unless it had a musical with Ethel Merman. In that period, the chunky, aggressive star with the clarion voice, brash personality, shrewd comic sense and steel nerves was the darling of such master songwriters as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Jule Styne.

When her Broadway career all but ended in 1959 with what many of her admirers considered her finest performance, as the mother of the stripper in ''Gypsy,'' she had done 13 musicals, nearly all of them hits.

She returned for a brief run, in 1966, of an ''Annie Get Your Gun'' revival, and although the critics cheered her still-powerful voice, they questioned the wisdom of a 59-year-old playing a lovestruck girl. In 1970, she was the last of the six stars who played the title role in Jerry Herman's ''Hello, Dolly!'' In 1964, she had turned down the role and it went to Carol Channing.

Miss Merman made 14 movies, some of them based on her Broadway triumphs, had her own radio show and scored a huge national success in 1953 in a television special teamed with Mary Martin, perhaps the only Broadway musical star of her stature at the time.

But it was on Broadway that Miss Merman belonged. Composers vied for her, knowing she would hit every note on the mark, hold it as long as needed, give it the right shading, follow the trickiest rhythm flawlessly. Lyrics writers were equally certain that she would make every syllable distinct and evoke every bit of laughter from a comic line.

Her delighted customers knew that when the ''belter'' strode onstage, turned her round eyes on them, raised her quizzical eyebrows and opened her wide mouth, they would get full value wherever they sat. She needed no hidden microphones. Equally important, they knew that when they bought tickets for a Merman show - usually well in advance - she would be there, her face beaming, strong arms churning, regardless of snowfall or flu epidemic. Her health was as legendary as her toughness and outspokenness.

In any gathering of showgoers, merely to mention a Merman show was enough to touch off a wave of nostalgia in which people began recalling - perhaps even singing - her hits. They included Gershwin's ''I Got Rhythm,'' from ''Girl Crazy''; ''Eadie Was a Lady,'' from ''Take a Chance''; ''Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries'' by Lew Brown and Ray Henderson, from the 1931 ''George White's Scandals''; ''Blow, Gabriel, Blow,'' ''I Get a Kick Out of You'' and ''You're the Top,'' from Porter's ''Anything Goes''; ''Ridin' High,'' from Porter's ''Red, Hot and Blue''; ''Friendship,'' from Porter's ''DuBarry Was a lady''; ''Let's Be Buddies,'' from Porter's ''Panama Hattie''; ''Doin' What Comes Natur'lly,'' ''You Can't Get a Man With a Gun,'' ''They Say It's Wonderful'' and ''I Got the Sun in the Morning,'' from Berlin's ''Annie Get Your Gun''; ''The Hostess With the Mostes' on the Ball'' and ''You're Just in Love,'' from Berlin's ''Call Me Madam,'' and ''Rose's Turn,'' from the Styne-Sondheim score for ''Gypsy.''

Her films included ''We're Not Dressing,'' ''Kid Millions,'' ''Strike Me Pink,'' ''Alexander's Ragtime Band,'' ''There's No Business Like Show Business'' and the Hollywood versions of ''Anything Goes'' and ''Call Me Madam.''

A self-taught singer, Miss Merman did not try to analyze her technique or style. When asked to explain her success, she said:

''I just stand up and holler and hope my voice holds out.'' Or: ''I leave the songs the way they came out of the composer's head.'' Or: ''Even if I don't know how I get the effects I end up with, I do have sense enough to know that I do all right. I'd be a dope if I didn't know that. I'd be even dopier if I changed the way I do it.''

''She's the best,'' Irving Berlin once said of her. ''You give her a bad song, and she'll make it sound good. Give her a good song, and she'll make it sound great

EXPLORE
It maybe so boring to be long hours on a bus without seeing things along the road from window seat. I booked a seat number when buying ticket but I was not so sure to get the seat number I wanted .. kind of "first come.. first serve"... but for sure everybody gets a seat..

So I went to bus station early and there I was told to sit in any seat I like ..no need to care for number... so who came late could not complain otherwise all everybody had to change seat ...

So I was glad I could sit on the location I likes .. in the left side so that I could see the river and valley.. The highway from cities was quite rolling and there were small trees and electric poles along road side, then taking photo was not so easy and predictable task.. Sometimes my arm and my forehead slightly bumped to the windows too..
However it was with fun ..

I didn't sleep but enjoy the view.. talking to a Japanese man sitting beside, listening to MP3 music sometimes and that made me already enjoy the no aircon bus along long, rolling and winding road..

This shot I waited till the bus passed to the location without trees and electric pole. It's not easy but not too difficult and I felt it's liked a full of fun photogrpay workshop... as I had three whole days travelling by tourist bus... from Kathmandu- Chitawan, from Chitawan - Pokhara and from Pokhara - Kathmandu.. This is the last trip by tourist bus..

I enjoyed it very much.. It's not a matter of cost that I didn't take the more expensive green line bus... with luxury seat, air con and insurance for tourist only.. It was something I want to see more on street and street life so that I took tourist bus.. I could be able to see and join with local life, eating local food. I didn't feel bothered when ther bus parked often. Insttead I enjoyed seeing closer street life

Immolate Yourself

2009 album from the New Orleans-based Electronica duo. TTA have landed on Ellen Allien's Berlin-based BPitch Control label and adopted a resolutely more upfront and upbeat sound, Recorded over the course of a year, Immolate Yourself is very much a departure from the Hefty label-era Telefon Tel Aviv, but Josh Eustis and Charlie Cooper have devised a sound that's at once contemporary and timeless. Vocals often remain shrouded in sonic fog, but this actually contributes to giving this album a moody touch, even when at its most upbeat. Refreshed and revived, Telefon Tel Aviv have produced with this third album their most enjoyable and enduring record to date. Bpitch Control.

Hoi An, Vietnam - Last weeks and Logistic Challenges

Hoi An, Vietnam - Last weeks and Logistic Challenges

Saturday, July 31, 2004

I'm rounding up the last couple weeks in Vietnam. The logistics here
are always more complicated than they should be. Mostly because so
many people are out to squeeze tourists for as much as they can. The
people and even the airline pricing infrastructure has highly inflated
prices for tourists. It's also hard to get consistent and honest
answers to the basic question "what's the cheapest way for me to get
from point A to point B, by airplane? I'm ok with any airline."
Commissions and incomprehensibly complex allegences influence the
response. I was told by two travel agents that no international
flights fly from a conveniently nearby city, only to find out that
indeed at least 2 airlines fly to at least Bangkok.

I probably won't be uploading many, if any, photos during the last 3
weeks of my trip, since it's much faster to do it from the states...
and the budget is too strained for uploading large files via slow
connections!
I should be back to the USA the 3rd week of August. I've had a
wonderful, if exhausting, time abroad. I've met some fabulous people
along the way, and made new friends.

I've actually made progress on my children's book sample, though I'll
need to spend a lot of time at home actually doing finished paintings.
I've worked on the computer so long, that my painting skills need
longer to develop than I thought.

I feel so fortunate to have had this experience. I also miss my old
friends, and I'm ready to come home!
Everyone write me and tell me how you're doing... I'm always happy to
hear from friends!

I appreciate 'alternatives' and 'options', always.

Heard one too many times of this statement, 'I don't take budget airline', or 'I don't eat at food court, hawker center' etc.

I say, Don't hate budget airlines, or anything budget. Many of us get to travel to more places because traveling is now made affordable. As individuals, we may be fully capable of flying on regular airlines, even business class, but life is designed in a fascinating way that some of these comforts are luxuries that we'd rather cut back on so that the funds go to better use. >.^

Fly Europe: The Complete Guide to Budget Airline Destinations

Fly Europe is a practical, easy-to-use guidebook that provides information on 80 budget airline destinations in one volume. Many of the cities the budget airlines fly to are not traditional tourist destinations and are therefore not covered by individual city guidebooks; equally, tourists may or may not need ot want a full-length, overly detailed city guidebook just for a short break. This book aims to help readers make an informed choice about the best destination to choose; then, once that choice is made and the flights are booked, they will have at their fingertips all the information they need to enjoy a short break in that city. Each city section provides details on transport to and around the city, what to see there and why, accommodation (from budget to luxury hotels), eating out, nightlife and shopping, and a useful map of the city center.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM Asia) - Boeing 747-406M Combi - PH-BFH (c/n 24518/783) - City of Hong Kong

This KLM Combi ("Combi" denotes an aircraft capable of carrying a combination of passengers and cargo on the main deck - note the large cargo door aft of trailing edge of the wing root) was delivered to KLM in April 1990. Note it also wears KLM Asia titles.

KLM Asia was a wholly owned subsidiary of KLM that was established in 1995 because of Communist China's insistence that aircraft flying to the Republic of China (Taiwan), which KLM had flown to since 1983, could not be "Flag Carriers." This was not an issue of contention until the 1990s, when KLM applied for flights into Communist China. Giving in to Communist China's demands in order to be approved for flight traffic into mainland China, KLM Asia branding was created for aircraft that would fly to Taiwan.

KLM Asia is no longer in operation, however the livery does remain on a number of aircraft.

In addition to the KLM Asia titles on the tail and fuselage, note also that the crown typically above the "L" in KLM is omitted, as is the Dutch flag.

Angel's Flight Regrand opening 1996

Angel's Flight Regrand opening 1996

Los Angeles, CA. UP DATE :
It's been a long time coming and downtowners eagerly are awaiting the reopening of Angels Flight, the funicular railway between Hill Street in the Historic Core to the California Plaza atop Bunker Hill. In fact, people are so eager that last week the Downtown News wrote an editorial saying "it is time for local government officials to insert themselves into the process so the funicular can reopen," citing a 2001 tragedy that killed one and left the "shortest railway in the world" stagnant as they rebuilt, financed and began to get ready for a reopening, which should be soon.

In response to the downtown paper, Dennis R. Luna and John H. Welborne from the Angels Flight Railway Foundation fought back and had their side of the story reprinted. The government is already "intimately involved" and there is no need to bring in the city or Mero, they say. "Angels Flight will reopen soon, but only after experts certify it is safe for the unique funicular to do so and the [California Public Utilities Commission] concurs. Involving additional non-expert elected officials or city or county agencies (including the heavy-rail and light-rail experts at Metro) is not the way to clear hurdles and speed the reopening."

In fact, they say that when city hall got involved with Angels Flight in 1962, it was open for seven years, then closed until 1996 when the foundation took it over and ran it "16 hours every day, seven days every week and 365 days every year. Over 800,000 passenger trips were clocked each year, for a total of 4 million passenger trips in the five years following the 1996 reopening." And all while keeping the fare at a quarter per ride (they secured outside money, too), which they hope to keep the same when it opens this year.

Analysis Of Naval Flight Officer Selection, Assignment, And Flight School Completion Among U.S. Naval Academy Graduates

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A636083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: There are three models analyzed in this study. The first two models attempt to determine whether academic rank, military rank, and major are predictive of NFO service selection and NFO assignment. The goal of the third model, which predicts NFO completion, is to determine whether academic and military grades, major, personality, gender, and race predict completion of NFO flight training. Logistic regression is used to analyze the effect of the explanatory variables on the dependent variables. The analysis shows that the first two models are not statistically significant predictors of NFO service selection and NFO service assignment. The NFO completion model displays the most interesting result of all three models. Military quality point rating is a highly significant predictor of completing NFO flight training. For midshipmen who select NFO as their first or second choice, the higher their military grades the more likely an Academy graduate will complete flight officer training. Further research is recommended to determine if military quality point rating is a significant predictor of completing one's initial training in other warfare communities.

The Perpetual Flight of an old Hunter

The Perpetual Flight of an old Hunter

An old Hawker Hunter - a Navy jet from the early sixties into the seventies.

This old girl is in perpetual flight over the crossroads at Ford in Sussex (see below)

I happen to know that a few of these early jets were still in service in the late seventies. I know this because I went up in one in 1979. It was part of my JOAC.... (Junior Officer Aircraft Acquaint).

As a young Naval Occifer I was required to go and experience what it would feel like to be in a jet fighter. We went to a base in Somerset, myself and a few other young victims, and we were put into the hands of the naval historic flight.

Historic in EVERY sense; the machines and the pilots.

I distinctly remember the the chap who took me up. He was the as old as I am now. He had grey hair and a wonderful handle-bar moustache. He seemed straight out of the Biggles comics to me.

They kitted us up with flight suits and helmets, we had a safety briefing and then we were off!!!

We went up in trainer jets, so they were the same as this one only with a double cockpit side-by-side.

I was sat next to (old) biggles as we went off on a foggy Somerset morning. We taxied onto the runway and then we were off.

Well... we went off and straight UP. Within seconds we cleared the clouds and just went up up and up! I remember seeing the curve of the earth thought the canopy. It was surreal!

The scutterbut at the time was that they would do their best to make you sick - which would be very interesting with the helmet and the mask on. I was determined to beat them and not puke.

This old geezer put the jet through its paces, pulling gees left right and centre. All the time asking me if I was feeling OK.

I was feeling bloody awful, but would not admit it and kept saying "All OK".

Eventually we had to land. We went back down below the clouds and the viz was then zero.

I thought I'd survived well and kept my dignity intact..... until...

literally 50 feet above the ground and as we were approaching the runway...

he did a full 360 degree roll, and then landed soft as you like.

I got out with my dignity intact.....

just... I was scared and I expect my face was a very intersting shade of green.

We de-kitted and the met the pilots for a drink in the mess... what a bunch of characters.

NEGATE - OPPOSITE POLARITY EXPLANATION

NEGATE - OPPOSITE POLARITY EXPLANATION

Faraday: "I can NEGATE the energy under the Swan."
Kate: "How can you destroy the energy?"
Faraday: "I'm gonna detonate a hydrogen bomb."

Faraday warns against drilling to release the energy, but blowing a bomb would make an even larger hole to release the energy. The key word is "NEGATE". Not blow up the Swan site, not "plug up" a hole, but NEGATE the energy itself.

If the energy under the Swan is of one polarity, one would need a large force of the opposite polarity or phase to cancel it out or "negate" it.

A regular plutonium core wouldn't do that, but one from the opposite phase reality would.

Either the US military brought the Jughead to the island crossing from one reality to the next, or Faraday figures a way to get it through a Shen door. The important part, is that if it is from the opposite polarity reality, instead of blowing open a hole for the energy to escape, it would phase cancel, or NEGATE it.

The strong magnetic (opposite polarity) field produced by the hatch via Desmond, opened up a hole from the one reality, to the opposite polarity version, and the Oceanic 815 from that polarity dimension entered into the other one, so now there are TWO Oceanic 815 planes in that world.

One on the island, and one on the bottom of the Sunda Trench that is ALSO the REAL Oceanic 815.

But now in the OTHER polarity reality, (where the Oceanic 815 came from) there is NO Oceanic 815. In this reality, if there is any plane down there, it is a fake.

The island has pockets of energy that we have been told "have an almost limitless energy" that if harnessed correctly will give the ability to "manipulate time" The properties of the island "have created a kind of casimir effect." Allowing the DI to "conduct experiments in both SPACE and time." "four-dimensional space"

The island heals people that are from the opposite polarity reality. (high power Magnetic Therapy) But if Ben is brought through a Shen door at the Temple after he was shot as a boy, then Ben is in the SAME reality as the island's energy, thus the island can't cure him when he has cancer.

This also explains why Jack's appendix needs to be removed and why the island can't cure him, because he ALSO is from the same polarity as the island. We know this via his tattoo:

"He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us"

If Jack was not one of them BEFORE the crash, then when he crashes on the island, he is now actually in his correct world, unlike the rest of the survivors! And thus why he needs his appendix removed, because the island's energy can't heal him either, just as it couldn't heal Ben.

Meeting with Isaac the healer in Australia, Rose was told that he was unable to help her. It wasn't that she couldn't be healed, but rather the energies present at that place weren't right for her.

But she COULD be healed if the strong pocket of magnetic energy was of the opposite polarity, like on the island which is in the opposite polarity universe. At least the way the Oceanic 815 got to this version of the island from the other polarity reality.

This also explains the pregnancy problems. If the fetus is formed OFF the island, it is the same polarity as the mother, but if the fetus begins ON the island, it is a person that is of THAT reality, which is opposite polarity of the mother who came from the other reality.

Claire got pregnant OFF the island, her baby is no conflict to her on the island as they are two people from the same polarity. Those getting pregnant ON the island, create a new life (person) that exists in a different polarity than they are, thus the body rejects it.

The Jughead from the opposite polarity reality "NEGATED" the energy, thus the hole never opens for the Oceanic 815 to fly through it, and it lands at LAX. But in the other reality, unless the same thing is done, we have a problem, and the two realities won't stay in sync and we will still have people "LOST" in the other reality.

"Magnetic Therapy" and it's concern for the polarity of the magnets facing the body, is not unlike the healing properties of the island to those that come from the other reality.

The island seems to have swapped from one polarity to the other, as opposed to the rest of the planet.

Because of the opposite polarity of the alternate reality, the North and South poles are also opposite. That Earth would be upside down in relation to ours, so that exiting directly from the island, you would end up at the ANTIPODE of the other, such as in Tunisia.

Sayid noted that the compass points differently than where it should in this reality. Perhaps East is West, and North is South.

And perhaps night is day and day is night. How often have we seen a scene in daylight, and suddenly when we get back to that same scene, it is dark night?

Naomi landed wearing a helmet with oxygen & parachute.

How We Met Norman

How We Met Norman

Norm was traveling to St Louis to perform a comedy stint at the Funnybone Comedy Club. We were traveling to St Louis to drive to St Robert for Mitch's AIT Graduation. Here's how it went...
My wife noticed a famous Hollywood person talking to someone at LAX. She heard voices refering to David Hasselhoff behind her and turned in her seat to inquire if it was really David Hasselhoff that was standing there. The man said yes, and that was good enough for her. She had seen a real Hollywood Actor/Singer. At least the rest of the world thinks he is a singer...
However, contemplating her last conversation, she then thought she recognized the man's voice who spoke to her as well. So when I arrived back from one of my many trips to the window to photograph passing aircraft, she whispered in my ear if that was a famous person sitting behind us. I had no choice but to turn and pretend to not look, and said 'Yes'. It's Norm from SNL fame. But Norm's pretty sharp. He noticed me pretending to look the other way. I spent the next few minutes trying to remember his last name to no avail. So between trips to the window, I tried to not listen to his conversation, which I can't remember anyways. I kept track of him while I wandered from window to window in the terminal, just in case I could sneak a papparazzi shot of him, as turning around in my seat and blinding him with my XTi flash would be just wrong, and not wanting to just ask for his picture across the way, I finally let the thought pass. But he had priority boarding, boarded our flight ahead of us and proceeded to the rear of the plane. I thought it wierd for such a famous guy to have priority boarding to sit in the back of the plane in the coach seating with the rest of us, but nevermind. We made it to St Louis without anyone screaming or fainting.
We got off the plane in St Louis, and Diana decided she wanted to speak to him a bit more and explain her actions to him, as she now thought it was funny to ask a 'movie star' about another 'movie star' without knowing she was talking to a 'movie star'. So Norm finally exited the flight and Diana approached him once again. This time he had a smile on his face as she spoke. He does get recognized a lot, and it is my guess that he was just a bit dissapointed at our hollywood sleuthing skills. I mean, we were in Los Angeles for gosh sakes! Anyways, he is a really nice guy with a nice firm handshake and a nice midwestern drawl, just like on SNL. We spoke for a few minutes before I realized I still had a camera, so I asked if I could take his picture standing next to my wife.
Here it is.
I hope he gets to see this.

murphy's law couldn't keep us apart

murphy's law couldn't keep us apart

One year ago today (February 13) it took me 21 hours to make it from NH to OR by plane.
My first flight to Vegas was delayed by an ice storm, and after five hours of sitting on the plane I had finished the book I brought with me (Son of a Witch) and various magazines, and missed my connection to Oregon for sure.
After three de-ices and attempts to leave we were finally on our way to sin city...and for the first time in my adult life I wasn't happy to be going there...I wanted to get to Oregon and to Patrick.
Vegas had promise, I managed to find a Southwest gate agent faster than the other people from my flight (who were all bewildered by the delay or they didn't have connections they'd missed, like I did) and next thing I know I'm running as fast as I can through the terminal and they're holding a flight to Boise, ID for me.
I sit in the LAST ROW on the airplane between two business men, who both think I'm nuts for being so out of breath.
We settle in for our flight to Boise, where I will connect for a flight to Portland, I will be late, but I will be there by dinner time at least, it was something. Patrick and I had plans for Chinese food that night.
We're one hour into the two-hour flight, we've been served sodas and pretzels (damn you peanut allergy people) and I'm finally getting excited again about my trip, it was a bit of a rough start, but I was really on my way this time.
Then the plane turned around.
The pilot told us all there was a malfunction with the landing gear (just what you always want to hear) and we were going to have to go back to Vegas where they would be better equipped to handle any problems that would "unlikely" arise.
You're fucking kidding me, I said to the well dressed man next to me.
Sure enough, we have the roughest landing I've ever had on a flight, people actually screamed it was so rough, overhead compartments flung open and bags were in the aisles.
But we were all fine, just a little surprised. We were even more surprised to learn we were the last plane cleared to land in Vegas that evening, they were experiencing 65 mph wind gusts there in the valley and the landing was due to the winds, not the landing gear which wound up not being an issue upon landing.
We all trudged off the plane to a closed airport and hundreds of people in lines trying to reschedule flights, trying to get on planes that might not leave until the next day.
Finally, my turn at the service desk. They inform me there are two more flights scheduled to Portland, one at 7, one at 9, neither likely to leave on time. She put me on the 9, and offered to let me fly stand-by on the 7, which would probably leave closer to 10. I burst into tears and said, "You're fucking kidding, right? If I stab someone to death from the 7 pm flight can't I just have their seat?" Which was met with a blank stare. I shook my head, apologized for wanting to kill other travelers in a post-911 environment, and wandered around the airport for an hour miserable and exhausted. I had gotten up at 3:30 am NH time to get my 6am flight. And now I was stuck in Vegas, and not even the glow of the strip could make me smile.
I remember sitting at my potential gate and talking on the phone to my friend Jimmy about my predicament, and I said to him, "I'm ready to offer a blow job in the bathroom for a seat on the next plane out of here," which I said louder than I intended as someone next to me shot me an evil look and stormed away, newspaper folded under their arm. He was probably more of a handjob sort of guy, I figured. Jimmy was laughing at me and reassuring me I'd get to Portland eventually.
In the three hours I sat in Vegas at the gate I made friends with a group of like-stranded travelers, all enchanted by my tale of new love and flights from hell. Planes finally started leaving again from Vegas around 8:30 pm, and the announcement was made that if everyone at our gate hustled and got on the plane, no nitpicking about seats or luggage, just get on and get on damned fast, they might be able to squeeze a flight out in between wind gusts. But we had to HUSTLE, no fucking around was the unspoken threat, or we might have to sleep in the airport.
I stood in line at the counter and watched my new friends board the flight, pell-mell, dragging children and bags behind with no concern for brutality.
When they announced that all the stand-bys for the 7 pm flight could board because so many people had rescheduled their plans to fly out the next day I screamed with enthusiasm and bolted down the ramp towards the plane to Oregon, FINALLY!
As I walked down the aisle, triumphantly, people were high-fiving me and cheering me on, like I had won a major award, and in a way I had.
Finally, around 11:45 pm Oregon time, I made my way through the PDX terminal towards my Patrick.
It took nearly a year of friendship and flirting to get me to Portland, and 21 hours of misery and tasteless commentary to strange

Viscount's farewell flight hits a snag PICT0089x

Viscount's farewell flight hits a snag PICT0089x

A VICKERS Viscount scheduled to make its final domestic passenger flight yesterday had to be replaced at the last moment after hitting a fence.

The plane was preparing to fly from Stansted to Heathrow, where passengers were waiting to board the historic 45-minute flight, but it suffered a 2ft gash in a wing while being towed.

Another Viscount was flown to Heathrow so the flight could go ahread.

Passengers stranded at Stansted were taken to London by bus.

Among the guests waiting to board the flight at Heathrow was London King of Wartnby, president of British Airways.

Colin Smale-Saunders, engineering director of British World Airlines, which operates Viscounts, said: "This was very unfortunate but we are glad this historic flight was able to go ahead."

The Duke of Edinburgh was among many who paid tribute yesterday to the plane which is ceasing passenger service after 43 years.

He said: "It is sad news that the long and active commercial life of the Viscount has finally come to an end.
"I'm sure that many people who flew, or flew in, these aircraft will be pleased that is is being given a suitable farewell."

A total of 444 Viscounts were built for more than 60 airlines.

Five of those remaining will continue in service carrying parcels from Belfast and Edinburgh to Coventry.

The Flight of a Dove

The Flight of a Dove

An inspiring story about an autistic child

Betsy is a child trapped inside her own body. Her autism keeps her isolated and alone, a world apart from even her mother. After hearing about a school for children with developmental disabilities, Betsy's mother enrolls her with high hopes. But once there, Betsy cries uncontrollably and refuses all attempts to comfort her. She sits with her eyes shut tight and her fists clenched. The head teacher believes that animals sometimes help children overcome problems, so she tries to engage Betsy with the many pets in residence at the school. Betsy shows no interest in any of them -- until the day one special bird manages to catch her attention.
The Flight of a Dove is a moving story graced with evocative illustrations by the author, who works in hospitals with her own therapy dog.

Orville's Aviators: Outstanding Alumni of the Wright Flying School, 1910-1916

The six pioneers profiled here were promising graduates of the Wright Brothers' School of Aviation, which flourished in Ohio from 1910 to 1916. These airmen fairly represent their 113 fellow alumni in their all-consuming love of flying. The pilots are Arthur L. Welsh, a Russian immigrant who rose to become Orville Wright's chief instructor; Howard Warfield Gill, heir to an international tea dynasty; Archibald Freeman, whose flour-bag bombing of Boston Harbor won him attention as an early exponent of the supremacy of air power; Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, whose promise as a pilot quickly soured; George A. Gray, whose marriage resulted in an extraordinary husband and wife exhibition team; and Howard Max Rinehart, aerial mercenary, international racing competitor, Wright test pilot, South American explorer, and co-owner of one of America's premier charter services.
