Croatia: A Nation Forged in War; Third Edition

Croatia: A Nation Forged in War; Third Edition

From the ashes of former Yugoslavia an independent Croatian state has arisen, the fulfillment, in the words of President Franjo Tudjman, of the Croats' "thousand-year-old dream of independence." Yet few countries in Europe have been born amid such bitter controversy and bloodshed: the savage war between pro-independence forces and the Yugoslav army left about one-third of the country in ruins and resulted in the flight of a quarter of a million of the country's Serbian minority.
In this book an eyewitness to the breakup of Yugoslavia provides the first full account of the rise, fall, and rebirth of Croatia from its medieval origins to today's tentative peace. Marcus Tanner describes the creation of the first Croatian state; its absorption into feudal Hungary in the Middle Ages; the catastrophic experience of the Ottoman invasion; the absorption of the diminished country into Habsburg Austria; the evolution of modern Croatian nationalism after the French Revolution; and the circumstances that propelled Croatia into the arms of Nazi Germany and the brutal, home-grown "Ustashe" movement in the Second World War. Finally, drawing on first-hand knowledge of many of the leading figures in the conflict, Tanner explains the failure of Tito's Communists to solve Yugoslavia's tortured national problem by creating a federal state, and the violent implosion after his death.
Croatia's unique position on the crossroads of Europe—between Eastern and Western Christendom, the Mediterranean, and the Balkans and between the old Habsburg and Ottoman empires—has been both a curse and a blessing, inviting the attention of larger and more powerful neighbors. The turbulence and drama of Croatia's past are vigorously portrayed in this powerful history.

Left in tatters after the violent breakup of Yugoslavia, the new country of Croatia has served as a troubled crossroads between East and West since the Dark Ages. Veteran journalist Marcus Tanner set out to write the recent history of this nation, but found it impossible to cover the 1990s without referring to World War II, and impossible to write about that period without going back even further. So he begins his account in the 7th century, covers Croatian history in a brief but thorough manner, and spends the final third of his book describing how Croatia regained its sovereignty in 1992. A glut of books on the Balkan War give short shrift to this intriguing story. Tanner corrects this problem with a fine and unique contribution.

The New Boy (Doreen Tovey)

"So there we were, driving along with an earth-box, a bag of turkey, and, squalling his head off on my knee in Sheba's basket, the new boy." The Toveys are no strangers to disaster, particularly the Siamese-related kind, but when their beloved Solomon dies unexpectedly, they're faced with a completely new type of problem—do they find another cat to replace the one they've lost? The animals always win in the Tovey household and this time is no exception. It is with the interests of Solomon's (very audibly) grieving sister Sheba at heart that Doreen and Charles set off in search of Solomon Secundus, affectionately known as Seeley. Joined by a host of endearing characters, Seeley ensures he's living up to Solomon's standards in just the amount of time it takes to fall in a fishpond. This is an enchanting tale that will tickle your funny bone and tug on your heartstrings.

Poem by Doreen E Reckitt

'A century of missing miners.'

Distant and forgotten,
Their remains erased.
A Nation's pioneers, coal- blackened,
beneath the ground.
Husbands, fathers,
sons and lovers.
Their bodies worn
and old before their time,
were never found.

The next years would teach her the true meaning of family, unconditional love, and the existence of soul mates; but not before she experienced a life filled with mystery, suspense, revenge, and revelation.

If you have never had a “She-ro”, prepare to meet Presley Lynn Powers and know that never again will you look at women in the same way. Her dignity, strength and sense of purpose will propel you into a new mindset for your life and its meaning.

Meeting Momma Bets will give you a personal experience with pure love and hope, and the knowledge that “all women” are meant to find love, but first they give it away. This is foster parenting at its best.

Your life will be better for having met the men in Presley’s life. Learning the pitfalls of the Knight in Shining Armor that Bristol Lee

Narrow-gauge train, Bilbao.

Narrow-gauge train, Bilbao.

A couple of years ago we treated ourselves to a "short break" holiday in Bilbao, Spain. Well, Easyjet were doing cheap flights from Bristol Airport. My first impulse in any foreign country is to dump Mrs Bentos at the shops or the beach while I go off to reconnoitre the local railway system. That way we're both happy.
Bilbao has three stations. One, the Estacion de Santander, is the terminus of a the FEVE narrow gauge system. It has a beautiful tiled facade and the train shed, which is at a considerable elevation, has a window all along one side giving a view across the roofs of the city to the surrounding hills. The place was almost deserted, with one train of miniature rolling-stock standing at a platform. Such a charming, under-used, small-scale anomaly, I reflected, would have been shut down 40 years ago in England. I took a couple of photographs.
My reverie ceased abruptly when I saw a black-uniformed policeman, complete with truncheon and gun, walking purposefully towards me. I knew what was coming of course, but pretended not to. I was wearing a beret, actually bought in Paris ten years before, which may have led him to mistake me for a local. He addressed me in Spanish, or possibly Basque ...it was all the same to me. "I'm sorry, do you speak English?" I ventured, smiling pleasantly. "No", he replied, with hauteur. A pantomime of gesture ensued. An air camera was raised before the policeman's face, he screwed up one eye and crooked an index finger above an imaginary shutter-release button. I organised my features into a look of sudden understanding. The policeman now uncrooked his index finger from its button-depressing attitude, straightened it and passed it back and forth in front of his face to indicate prohibition of the previously enacted activity. "Ah", I said. He then extended the fingers of both hands, flipper-like, turned and pointed them down towards the track. This I took to represent wheels resting on the rails. The hands, still extended, were then suddenly cast forward, as though the policeman were throwing out a bowl of water. Obviously this was supposed to be the progress of the wheels along the track. Did I intend to travel? I said not ...and the policeman pointed to the exit.
An ignominious episode. Ejected from a public place by a policeman at my time in life ...with all the added embarrassment of mutual incomprehension. To be fair, this was only a couple of weeks after the Madrid train bomb, and one can understand the sensitivity of the authorities towards people taking an undue interest in their trains; but what an illogical attitude it is. Ten minutes earlier I had photographed the Teatro Arriaga across the road. No one took any notice and no policeman had appeared. Yet, considered as a terrorist target, a crowded theatre has much to recommend it. Obviously the policeman didn't think I was a terrorist at all; he'd have arrested me if he had. It is preposterous to behave as though photographing something amounts to an intention to blow it up. It was not the time or place, but this sort of thing, so often encountered among over-inflated "security" types in England, ought to be resisted.

Away From The Numbers.

Away From The Numbers.

I made use of Ryanair's cheap flights over the last few days and hopped across to Seville. Had a great few days and the barmy weather of 27 degrees was far more pleasant than our own shores.

This shot turned into a bit of a marathon. I saw the girl and her dog approaching and only had a split second to capture one image as there were other people around that were going to walk into the scene. I just had time to increase exposure so that I got some detail in the arch, however in doing so I overexposed the white building in the background. I managed to pull some of the detail back through the RAW converter in Photoshop. I duplicated the image several times to get a wide exposure range of 6 images and then processed twice, once as a blended exposure and once as an HDR in Photomatix. I then blended the two resulting images together in photoshop to retain detail in the sky and erased the top layer to reduce noise.
In photoshop I then applied several textures and an orange fill layer before final levels, saturation, contrast and sharpening tweaks.

A view towards the Cathedral, Seville, Spain.

Flight Attendant School - Episode: 1 & 2

Reach for the skies with the class of Flight Attendant School. Viewers join the new recruits as these men and women engage in eight weeks of top-flight training. Gone are the days when it was simply "coffee, tea, or dessert?" for flight attendants. They're preparing for work in which they will be stationed around the globe, fly off at a minute's notice, and make split-second decisions.
Our audience welcomes the crew of Flight Attendant School into their homes as the gang studies for finals and buckles down to get those wings.
EPISODE 1 - It's orientation day at Frontier Airlines' flight attendant training center, and 40 new students are here to begin the six-week journey to earn their wings. They discover it's going to be more difficult than just learning how to serve drinks and pretzels.
EPISODE 2 - On day two of Frontier Airlines' flight attendant training, the students must pass their first round of tests or risk being sent home. With testing over and two classmates terminated, the students head to the mountains for some vertigo-inducing activities."

Now this is a curious garment. I'm not sure if this is a dress that can be chosen as an alternative to the skirt, jacket and blouse combination, or a serving garment that is worn over top. It seems rather too tailored for the latter. But it is rather a dowdy cut on a young woman, and that colour reminds me of the uniforms of the ladies who worked in the hospital cafeteria when I was a high-school volunteer.

Thalys TGV #4532, Bruxelles-Midi Station, Brussels, Belgium, 2007

Jumping way ahead to my trip back to Prague, this was when I had to spend a few hours waiting for my connection in Brussels. I also took photos of the city, of course, but first...the trains!! :-) At least, this was the most interesting one, I thought. This is a Thalys TGV high-speed train, essentially a 2nd Generation SNCF TGV, but with multi-current capability for operating into Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. As with other international European trains, the Thalys is operated by a crew from the country it is currently in, switching at the border. These are used a lot by American tourists, at least if they've still heard of train travel, because they offer a faster form of international transport than the plane or the car. Also, if you have a Eurail pass (I didn't), it's often cheaper than flying, although a surcharge is added because the Thalys is, indeed, a true high speed train capable of running at 300Km/h (186 m.p.h.). This one looks to have its coupler exposed for running with another set, although I didn't see the other set around.

Prague: A Novel

A novel of startling scope and ambition, Prague depicts an intentionally lost Lost Generation as it follows five American expats who come to Budapest in the early 1990s to seek their fortune. They harbor the vague suspicion that their counterparts in Prague have it better, but still they hope to find adventure, inspiration, a gold rush, or history in the making.

In Prague, Arthur Phillips's sparkling, Kundera-flavored debut, five young Americans converge in Budapest in the early 1990s. Most are there by chance, like businessman Charles Gabor, whose parents were Hungarian. But one of them, John Price, has the more novelistic motivation of lost love. He is following his older brother, Scott, intent on achieving an intimacy that Scott, a language teacher and health enthusiast, is just as intently trying to escape. The romantic hero of this unsentimental novel, John Price lives like an expatriate of the 1920s. He longs for experience (and more or less stumbles into a writing job for an English language paper), but even more so for the great, obliterating love that takes the form of the perky assistant Emily Oliver. Mark Payton, a scholar of nostalgia whose insights are touched with mysticism, seems often to speak for the author, even in his barely repressed desire for John Price. For who would not love the good and unaffected, in the confusion, opportunism, and irony that characterize fin-de-siecle Europe? Phillips's five seekers are like mirrors that reflect Budapest at different angles, and that imperfectly--but wonderfully--point toward the unattainable city: the glittering, distant Prague. --Regina Marler

241-365: Bloodshot

My eyes are bloodshot in this picture. It's what happens when one spends too much time in the pool on a sunny afternoon.

My boss lives in southern New Hampshire. He and his wife invited my boss' team to come up for a cookout and to swim. And swim we did. Their pool has a deep end with a nice diving board. Lets just say I found muscles that I had forgotten about.

My plans for next weekend have completely changed. My friend Josh's closing date got pushed back because of a problem on the seller's side. So instead of going to Pittsburgh, I'll be heading to Washington, DC for the weekend. Southwest Airlines made changing my travel plans incredibly easy. The worst part of the whole trip is that I'm flying into BWI instead of DCA. I got a great deal on both airfare and hotel. Seriously. I'm staying at a Hilton for $90 a night. You can't beat that.

Golden - Clear Creek Bridge (9988 fix crop)

Since we found a screaming deal on airfare this spring, we took a "quick" trip to Colorado over the Independence Day weekend. We split our time between Golden and Fort Collins, but wedged in plenty of hiking, food, and - of course - beer!

Here's the view of Clear Creek going through downtown Golden. Because the snowfall was so immense last winter, Clear Creek was running so high that portions of the trails along the banks were closed! Where those fish statues are - that's a plaza where kids normally play and splash around and use the slide. Not this time - it was all closed b/c it was under water!

Confessions of a Military Wife

Confessions of a Military Wife

"I remember when I hit rock bottom. There I was with no make-up on, hadn't showered, eating raw cookie dough out of the tube, hitting on the toothless bagger at the commissary, and ordering jewelry off the TV. And that was just my first day!"
Confessions of a Military Wife is an honest, witty, and often hilarious look at the life of the new generation military wife. Mollie Gross learned the hard way to laugh instead of cry at what she could not control as a military spouse-and as she quickly discovered, nearly everything was out of her control!
A standup comedienne, public speaker, and wife of a Marine Corps officer, Mollie explores everything about the "issued" spouse, from deployment and the stress of having a husband in a combat zone, to the realization that marriage changes when your husband returns home from war. Nothing is taboo or out-of-bounds in Confessions, including the "parties" military wives throw for themselves before hubby returns. (You'll have to read the book to find out about those!)
More than one million American servicemen have deployed to war over the last few years, which means the lives and lifestyles of military wives are now front and center in the public's curiosity. How do they live? What is their day-to-day life like? How do they interact? How do they deal with weeks and months of separation? The answers will surprise (and in some cases, shock) you. Confessions teaches all women, whether civilian or military, that they can learn to find the funny side of anything by embracing the situation and changing their perspective. And now they can do so with humor and levity, and a little wisdom.
Evocative and provocative, Confessions of a Military Wife is a can't-put-down book that will leave you laughing and crying at the same time.

REVIEWS

"Mollie Gross is the Chelsea Handler of the milspouse community. She's unfiltered, honest, and hilarious, with an underlying message to stop whining and be proud. Think of it as heartfelt humor for the home front." - Military Spouse Magazine

"This book will have you laughing so hard you cry, but mostly nodding your head in agreement. As Confessions aptly demonstrates, military spouses lead interesting lives. Leave it to Mollie to turn some of our most candid military spouse moments into fits of laughter!" - Tara E. Crooks, military lifestyle writer, speaker, talk radio host, and co-founder of Army Wife Network (ArmyWifeNetwork.com)

"Better put on your big girl panties for this wild ride! Mollie's Confessions is not for the faint of heart. She expresses her faith, but nothing is sacred, so if you can handle the minute details of a Brazilian wax and what Bunco parties are really all about, dive right in. Prepare to be uplifted, and by that I mean right out of your chair. You'll either laugh uncontrollably or throw the book across the room. Either way, Mollie's tales of her life as a Marine wife will not leave you unmoved." - Terri Barnes, "Spouse Calls," Stars and Stripes

Removalgroup Reviews Complaints - Iceland Volcanic Ash Flight Delays

Thousands of UK air passengers face flight cancellations as the Icelandic ash cloud closed in on Britain, threatening serious disruption to schedules.

Travel plans were thrown into disarray for passengers at airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland, while even the US president, Barack Obama, was forced to amend his itinerary, flying into London earlier than planned to avoid the dense plume drifting towards the UK.

Forecasters predicted the volcanic cloud, which billowed from Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano, would reach Scotland and Northern Ireland in the coming hours, with much of the UK being covered by midday. But as a string of carriers announced cancellations, the transport secretary, Philip Hammond, said Britons had "to learn to live" with chaos caused by volcanic activity.

KIAH - My Future Layout Plan

My own rendition of the needed changes to the HAS Master Plan for IAH circa 2020-2040ish:

Extend EA and EB across Will Clayton Pkwy down to new runway 9R/27L for use as primary from there to the ramp bypassing congestion at SF and the current 9/27 traffic flow..

Begin disassembly of current Continental Maintenance Facilities for moving to gigantic new high tech state of the art hangars inspired by Boeing's Renton Airframe Assembly Plant... located between the 9's (dark grey is building size.) has enough room for 15 heavies (747,A340,777) simultaniously in hangar or sectionalized for C/D checks and painting under same roof.

Create new high tech FBO with hangar space for any corporate Business Jet at end of 9R/27L...

Build new automated jet wash system that can be quickly configured to wash any aircraft of any size. Will be able to wash any heavy within the turn time of most transoceanic flights. Inspired from Tokyo Narita International Airport's Automated Jet Wash System...

Expand Rental Car Center to double current size, leaving enough room for every car of every type and more companies..

New Next Generation FAA TRACON Facilities at the west interior corner of the new 9R/27L, accessed by same road as the Rental Car Circle with ramp space for "Flight Check" test aircraft regional maintenace, testing, and staging. New Air Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) Station with Air Disaster Preparedness Training Facility (burn pit) adjacent to property.

Worker Efficiencies in India

Worker Efficiencies in India

One of the obvious contrasts to India, here in Bangkok, seems to be the efficiency of workers...at least in larger businesses than a family run food stall. Yesterday we walked by two men laying down a pipe in a small ditch across a road and then cementing it over. Two hours later the job was complete. In India, it would have taken at least eight men and several days.
One example is when we arrived at the domestic airport in Delhi, there were, I counted them twice, 15 baggage handlers waiting for our plane of 120 passengers. I'm not sure what they all did. I wish we were allowed to take pictures of their airports.
On a similar flight with 11 baggage handlers loading the plane, I watched one guy throw a bag on the conveyor belt and press a button to watch the single bag ride alone to the top. Then he threw a second bag on...Five others were squatting in the baggage carts watching him do this until a supervisor came up and scolded them. The scene was very entertaining.
At each hotel reception desk, five people check in one reservation at a time. Each of the five seem to find a time to point at the paperwork and mumble something before the transaction is complete.
We passed a gas station in Delhi that had 3-4 uniformed attendants for each of the 4 gas pumps.
I'm not sure if it's a statement about the low cost of labor or inefficiencies of service or a motivation to employ as many people as possible in the country, but it seemed to be the way of doing business everywhere we went. Again, I qualify my statements by saying this doesn't apply to small entrepreneurial shops and stalls, which were almost too efficient, never giving you enough time to count your change.

Gas Station Coffee

Gas Station Coffee

i made it out of arkansas without any further mullet sightings. i think the guys had all gone to work by the time i left. the parking lot, which could have doubled for a chevy dealership dealing only in used white trucks, was empty.

i got a text and two phone calls about the weather today. not a single website or weather service seemed to know what was up for oklahoma. weather.com had a 1000% chance of death from above, NOAA thought there would be softball sized hail, the weather channel predicted anywhere from 30-50 tornados, and the OK weather service simply said "a 30% of showers". so, i was a bit confused and concerned over what to do. after a few phone calls, and no one really being able to tell me what to do, i just floored it. i decided to skip 66 around OKC and head for amarillo, where it was reportedly sunny and 80. im glad i did. as soon as i cleared city limits, i passed a wall of clouds and then... nothing but blazing sun. i cranked up the ipod, rocked out and sped along I-40, watching the grass and trees become a bit scruffier and the land flatter.

i pulled off the hwy in a few places. there's a frontage road along most of it. it's right there, but getting off the highway made me feel a bit more off the beaten path. it was fun zipping around corners and over little hills, and cruising along side the endless farmland.

i've always wanted to go running nillywilly through the long wispy fluffy grass. i got out at one point to climb through some of it to take a pic. let me tell you, it's not fluffy, folks. i was instantly afraid i'd be eaten by snake, and i spent an hour pulling prickers out of my socks before i finally tossed them out. i got back in my car, pulled out, and a roadrunner ran in front of my car. a roadrunner! they seriously exist. it was just so stereotypical texas i laughed my ass off. it reminded me of ten years ago, driving through a fairly developed area of las vegas when a tumble weed half the size of my vehicle went, well, tumbling, in front of my car.

i haven't taken many photos. the weather has not been on my side, and really, the view from I-40 is not so hot, unless you like mcdonald's signs and gas stations. even the burger king's have left me, along with the chance to get a veggie burger and not have to eat the cardboard box that once held my precious last miniwheats. i'd kill for a starbucks at this point. and i hate starbucks. the flat farmland has it's charms, though.

i took a few detours after i was sure i wasn't going to get swept away, but so far, the "old cool dead towns' are just old dead towns, and downright depressing. i feel like taking pictures is almost an insult. there are still a few people there, but i don't know how. there are a handfull of crappy motels, and endless gutted cement block buildings housing rusted out cars.

but, i'm in amarillo right now (executive hotel for those keeping track), and tomorrow should hit some good parts of the old route 66. I'm in an even skeezier hotel with the chairs against the door and my padlock holding together the inside door bolt. I went to two other hotels (yes, both managed by indians- which has me intensely curious at this point) that were sold out, before finding this gem. i don't think the water in the sink works.

Aeronca 11AC Chief G-AKVN

Aeronca 11AC Chief G-AKVN

The Aeronca Chief is a single-engine, two-seat, light aircraft with fixed conventional landing gear, which entered production in the United States in 1945.

Designed for flight training and personal use, the Chief was produced in the United States between 1946 and 1950. The Chief was known as a basic gentle flyer with good manners, intended as a step up from the 7AC Champion which was designed for flight training.

Like many classic airplanes, it has a significant adverse yaw, powerful rudder and sensitive elevator controls. It had a well appointed cabin, with flocked taupe sidewalls and a zebra wood grain instrument panel.

There was never a flight manual produced for the 11AC or 7AC series airplanes, as a simple placard system was deemed enough to keep a pilot out of trouble.

Production historyThe model 11 Chief was designed and built by Aeronca Aircraft Corporation. While it shared the name "Chief" with the pre-war models, the design was not a derivative.

Rather, the post-war 11AC Chief was designed in tandem with the 7AC Champion ("Champ")—the Chief with side-by-side seating and yoke controls, and the Champ with tandem seating and joystick controls.

The intention was to simplify production and control costs by building a pair of aircraft with a significant number of parts in common; in fact, the two designs share between 70% and 80% of their parts.

The tail surfaces, wings, ailerons, landing gear, and firewall forward—engine, most accessories, and cowling—are common to both airplanes. The Chief and the larger Aeronca Sedan also share selected parts, the control wheels, some control system parts, rudder pedals and control systems, so parts passed from plane to plane to save costs.

Production costs and aircraft weights were tightly controlled and Aeronca was among the first to use a moving conveyor assembly line, with each stage taking about 30 minutes to complete.

The 11AC Chief entered production at Aeronca in early 1946, with upgraded versions introduced as the 11BC (also called the "Chief") and 11CC "Super Chief," in June 1947 and 1948, respectively.

Aeronca was at the time headquartered at Middletown, Ohio, but production facilities there were heavily utilized with the 7AC Champion line; because of this, the model 11 aircraft were assembled at the Dayton Municipal Airport in Vandalia, Ohio.

While the Vandalia location was first used only for the assembly of parts fabricated at Middletown, activities there later expanded to include some fabrication work. Only later, toward the end of production did the Chief line return to Middletown.

Aeronca ceased all production of light aircraft in 1951. Production of the Chief, which had been outsold by its sibling the Champ by a margin of nearly 4 to 1, had already ended by 1950, with only a few planes produced in 1948-1949. This marked the last time the Chief design was built in the United States.

The design was sold in the mid-1950s to E. J. Trytek, who held the design until the late 1960s or early 1970s. The HUL-26 Pushpak, built by Hindustan Aeronautics between 1958 and 1968, was very similar to the Super Chief.

Some sources say that the Pushpak was produced under license from Trytek, while others sest that the Pushpak design resulted from reverse engineering.

The Pushpak can be identified by the smaller rudder surface which is squared off at mid-fin and the larger vertical tail that is found on the 11CC.

Ownership of the Chief design passed to Bellanca Aircraft Corporation in the early 1970s, around the same time they acquired the 7 series Champion/Citabria and its derivative designs.

In 1973 Bellanca considered producing an updated version of the Chief for flight training, but the aircraft never entered production. The model 11 designs are currently owned by American Champion Aircraft Corporation, which acquired them sometime before 1991.

Ownership of the design in the period between Bellanca's liquidation in 1982 and the American Champion acquisition is unclear.

Design

Like the Taylorcraft B, Piper Vagabond, Cessna 120/140, and Luscombe 8 with which it competed, the Chief features side-by-side seating.

As with many light aircraft of the time, including the Taylorcraft B and Piper Vagabond, the Chief's fuselage and tail surfaces are constructed of welded metal tubing.

The outer shape of the fuselage is created by a combination of wooden formers and longerons, covered with fabric.

The cross-section of the metal fuselage truss is triangular, a design feature which can be traced all the way back to the earliest Aeronca C-2 design of the late 1920s.

The strut-braced wings of the Chief are, like the fuselage and tail surfaces, fabric covered, utilizing aluminum ribs and wood spars.

The landing gear of the Chief is in a conventional arrangement, with steel tube main gear which use an oleo strut for shock absorption, and a steerable tailwheel.

All of the models—11AC, 11BC, and 11CC—we

U.S. Army FM 3-04.301 Aeromedical Training For Flight Personnel: Flight Surgeon Basics: Field Manual Guide Book on CD-ROM

From the Preface: 1. Lessons learned from previous military conflicts and recent contingency operations have caused changes in Army aviation doctrine and the development of more sophisticated aircraft and weapons systems. Army aircrew members must be capable of operating these systems around the clock, in austere environments, and under adverse conditions. They must be capable of employing these systems and avoid enemy air defense and air-to-air weapons systems. The hazards of stress and fatigue imposed by operating more sophisticated systems in combat operations and CONOPS will eventually take a toll in aircrew performance and could jeopardize mission accomplishment. Aircrew members must be trained to recognize and understand these hazards. Training can prepare aircrew members and prevent stress and fatigue from reducing their mission effectiveness and increase their chances of survival. 2. This manual gives aircrew members an understanding of their physiological responses to the aviation environment; it also describes the effects of the flight environment on individual mission accomplishment. In addition, it outlines the essential aeromedical training requirements (in Chapter 1) that assist the commander and flight surgeon in conducting aeromedical education for Army aircrew members. The subject areas addressed in the training are by no means all inclusive but are presented to assist aircrew members in increasing their performance and efficiency through knowing human limitations. This manual is intended for use by all Army aircrew members in meeting requirements set forth in AR 95-1, TC 1-210, and other appropriate aircrew training manuals.

Canada Geese in Lancashire, England - April 2009

Canada Geese in Lancashire, England - April 2009

The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a goose belonging to the genus Branta, which is native to North America. It is quite often called the Canadian Goose, but that name is not strictly correct, according to the American Ornithologists' Union.[2]

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first citation for the 'Canada Goose' dates back to 1772.

The Canada Goose was one of the many species described by Linnaeus in his 18th-century work Systema Naturae.[3] It belongs to the Branta genus of geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey species of the Anser genus. The specific epithet canadensis is a New Latin word meaning "of Canada".

A recent proposed revision by Harold Hanson sests splitting Canada Goose into six species and 200 subspecies. This radical nature of this proposal has provoked surprise in some quarters, such as Rochard Banks of the AOU, who urges caution before any of Hanson's proposals are accepted.[4]

The black head and neck with white "chinstrap" distinguish the Canada Goose from all, except the Barnacle Goose, but the latter has a black breast, and grey, rather than brownish, body plumage.[5] There are seven subspecies of this bird, of varying sizes and plumage details, but all are recognizable as Canada Geese. Some of the smaller races can be hard to distinguish from the newly-separated Cackling Goose.

This species is 76-110 cm (30-43 in) long with a 127-180 cm (50-71 in) wingspan.[6] The male usually weighs 3.2–6.5 kg, (7–14 pounds), and can be very aggressive in defending territory. The female looks virtually identical but is slightly lighter at 2.5–5.5 kg (5.5–12 pounds), generally 10% smaller than its male counterpart, and has a different honk. An exceptionally large male of the race B. c. maxima, the "giant Canada goose" (which rarely exceed 8 kg/18 lb), weighed 10.9 kg (24 pounds) and had a wingspan of 2.24 m (88 inches). This specimen is the largest wild goose ever recorded of any species. The life span in the wild is 10–24 years.[6]

This species is native to North America. It breeds in Canada and the northern United States in a variety of habitats. Its nest is usually located in an elevated area near water such as streams, lakes, ponds and sometimes on a beaver lodge. Its eggs are laid in a shallow depression lined with plant material and down. The Great Lakes region maintains a very large population of Canada Geese.

By the early 20th century, over-hunting and loss of habitat in the late 1800s and early 1900s had resulted in a serious decline in the numbers of this bird in its native range. The Giant Canada Goose subspecies was believed to be extinct in the 1950s until, in 1962, a small flock was discovered wintering in Rochester, Minnesota by Harold Hanson of the Illinois Natural History Survey. With improved game laws and habitat recreation and preservation programs, their populations have recovered in most of their range, although some local populations, especially of the subspecies occidentalis, may still be declining.

In recent years, Canada Geese populations in some areas have grown substantially, so much so that many consider them pests (for their droppings, the bacteria in their droppings, noise and confrontational behavior). This problem is partially due to the removal of natural predators and an abundance of safe, man-made bodies of water (such as on golf courses, public parks and beaches, and in planned communities).

Contrary to its normal migration routine, large flocks of Canada Geese have established permanent residence in the Chesapeake Bay and in Virginia's James River regions. The parks and golf courses of Scottsdale, Arizona have an unusually high concentration of permanent Canada geese.

Canada Geese have reached northern Europe naturally, as has been proved by ringing recoveries. The birds are of at least the subspecies parvipes, and possibly others. Canada Geese are also found naturally on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Siberia, eastern China, and throughout Japan.

Greater Canada Geese have also been introduced in Europe, and have established populations in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia. Semi-tame feral birds are common in parks, and have become a pest in some areas. The geese were first introduced in Britain in the late 17th century as an addition to King James II's waterfowl collection in St. James's Park.

Canada Geese were introduced as a game bird into New Zealand and have also become a problem in some areas.

Like most geese, the Canada Goose is naturally migratory with the wintering range being most of the United States. The calls overhead from large groups of Canada Geese flying in V-shaped formation signal the transitions into spring and autumn. In some areas, migration routes have changed due to changes in habitat and food sources. In mild climates, such as the Pacific Northwest, due to a lack of former predators, some of the

Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck

Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck

The Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck (affectionately known as the Clunk because of the noise made by the nose gear when retracting), was a Canadian jet fighter serving during the Cold War. It was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass-production. It is not considered to be truly supersonic since it could not exceed the speed of sound in level flight. In the early 1950s, Canada needed an interceptor able to patrol the vast areas of Canada's north and operate in all weather conditions. The two-seat fighter crewed by a pilot and navigator, was designed with two powerful engines and an advanced radar and fire control system housed in its nose that enabled it to fly in all-weather or night conditions. For its day, the CF-100 featured a short take-off run and high climb rate, making it well suited to its role as an interceptor. In September 1950, the RCAF ordered 124 Mk 3s; the first of these entered RCAF service in 1953, armed with eight .50-calibre guns. The definitive version, the rocket-armed Mk 4A, housed the much larger APG-40 radar with wingtip pods each containing up to 30 Mighty Mouse FFAR (folding fin aerial rockets) in addition to the guns. The last 54 of an order for the Mk 3 were changed into the Mk 4 in 1954, making a total of 510 Mk 4s. The aircraft operated under the US/Canadian North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) to protect North American airspace from Soviet intruders. Additionally, as part of NATO, four squadrons were based in Europe with 1 Air Division from 1956 to 1962, and were for some time the only NATO fighters capable of operating in zero visibility and poor weather conditions. Canucks flying at home retained natural metal finish, but those flying overseas were given a British-style disruptive camouflage scheme- dark sea gray and green on top, light sea gray on the bottom as seen in the photo. 53 Canucks served with the Belgian Air Force. Although originally designed for only 2,000 hours' flight life, it was found that the Canuck's airframe could serve for over 20,000 hours before retirement. Consequently, though it was replaced in its front line role by the CF-101 Voodoo, the Canuck served with 414 Squadron of the Canadian Forces at CFB North Bay, Ontario, until 1981, in reconnaissance, training and EW roles. The above photo was taken at the Imperial War Museum's site at RAF Duxford in the summer of 1984.

This range of craggy hills (the highest peak being 2004 m) holds the shimmering Amrita Sarovar Lake and offers walks of sylvan beauty. A popular health resort today, it was also the place Tipu Sultan and assorted royalty retired when they sought to escape the din of battle and the heat of the plains.
The hills are located about 60 km north of Bangalore and about 5970 ft above sea level. The deviation road at Oordagere on the Bangalore-Tumkur Road can reach it. On the top of the hill, there are temples dedicated to Sri Ugra Narasimha and Sri Yoga Narasimha. On the lower hill there is a temple dedicated to Sri Bhoga Narasimha. There is a Traveler's Bungalow and a Kalyana Mantap on the top of the hill and a Forest Lodge and Taluk Board T.B. at the foot of the hill.
A flight of 1,175 steps leads from the base of the hills to the top. On top was Tipu Sultan's summer retreat and the remains of Tipu's fort bear this out. Tipu's Drop, a 600 metre high cliff face, where prisoners were hurled down the precipice, is an awe-inspiring sight.
Sir Mark Cubbon, when he was Commissioner of Bangalore made this his summer residence. Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Queen Elizabeth II were among the other dignitaries who enjoyed their stay here. More recently, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and the SAARC delegates chose this spot for a retreat after their international deliberations.
You can visit this place at any time of the year. Its best if you are on top of the hill before sunrise. The wind, fog and clouds that blow towards you in the morning is just amazing. To be on top of the hill by 5:30AM, you need to leave Bangalore at around 4AM.

The Common Myna or Indian Myna or Mynah (Acridotheres tristis), is a member of the starling family. This is an omnivorous open woodland bird with strong territorial habits. These birds have well –adapted themselves to the urban environments & can be easily spotted in most parts of India. They are identified by the brown body, black hooded head and the bare yellow patch behind the eye. The bill and legs are bright yellow.

Interesting Fact – This bird lists itself in one of the only three birds (other two being Red-vented bulbul and European Starling) in the 100 most invasive species by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Transformation of India's Domestic Airlines: A case study of Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Sahara and Air Deccan [An article from: Journal of Air Transport Management]

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Air Transport Management, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
India, home to one-sixth of the world's population, is becoming one of the world's economic engines. Its bureaucratic and outdated regulatory policies have been reformed resulting in a three-fold increase in the number of scheduled airlines and a five-fold increase in the number of aircraft operated. This paper reviews how the new regulatory roadmap has transformed the supply of domestic air services. A large passenger survey conducted in Mumbai investigated the sensitivity of passengers to a change in fare and which flight products would encourage them to select either a full service airline or a low cost carrier. The study finds that there is a homogenous set of flight products required by leisure passengers, travelling on both full service and low cost airlines, however there is a considerable dissimilarity overall between the requirements of passengers using a full service airline and a low cost carrier.
