Airfare To Charlotte - Cheap Flights From Boston To Dublin. Airfare To Charlotte
Charlotte Charlotte is my pet. She chose me a few months ago, and came at just the right time, when I was knee deep in fruit flies. Charlotte really took the reins on that one and I love her for it. We've been through a lot together. Last month she disappeared for a night and came home knocked up. She laid her eggs and protected them like any good, coldblooded mother would. But I have a strick no breeding rule in my home, so I had to get rid of the poor little babies. I don't think she was too bothered by the ordeal. And last week I found a suitor not too far from her. I promptly moved him to another part of the house. No eggs yet. She has been living quite happily in a corner of my bathroom, right by the tub. But as sad as it is, I think I may have to say farewell to my lovely pet because, as you can see, I have developed a bit of a mold issue right behind her home. Al, the maintenance man will be coming tomorrow. I don't have the heart to evict her, so I've asked Al to be kind and gentle. Do you think he'll just flush her? Oh, maybe I should just shoo her away on my own. so much for neasecs 2007... These US Airways employees are about to tell me that now that I've missed my flight (due to the worst traffic i've ever seen on I-85 between Spartanburg and Charlotte) there's no way I'm going to be able to get to the conference on time. That's just swell. They think I'll be able to re-use the ticket for another flight at some point in the future. However, at this point, I have no idea if I just ate a few hundred dollars in airfare. I'm almost certain I won't be able to get my money back from the hotel with which I made reservations. This has never happened to me before. *sigh* Similar posts: newark airport arrival flights philippines air ticket flight status mobile air india flight status ai 126 china flight tracker cheap flight to winnipeg spirit airline flight schedule flight air asia |

Ship For Brains: Cruise Confidential Book 2 In his bestselling debut tell-all Cruise Confidential, cruise ship insider Brian David Bruns revealed why he was the only American in Carnival Cruise Lines history to complete a full eight-month contract in their restaurants. Returning with his award-winning wit and delightfully candid narrative voice, Brian brings us the first and only expose of art auctioneering on the mighty liners, where the tenet of ‘what happens at sea, stays at sea’ has always been observed—until now. Ship For Brains ($15.95 trade paperback original) takes on cruise ship art auctioneers, a society brimming with odd personalities drawn to the stress and isolation that invariably lead to alcohol and a Hell-may-care attitude. Willingly giving up home and family in favor of high-paced, crushing sales goals demanded while port-hopping from nation to nation, art auctioneers are undermined by the lash of tyrannical ship officers, unforgiving gallery managers, hyena-like trainers, and a skeptical public. The burn-out rate is phenomenal—but when it works, you are king of the world. Brian’s true-life struggle turns both harrowing and hilarious when goaded by the lecherous but mighty auctioneer Bill Shatner, and he must navigate sexy dancers and their all-to-intimate cliques, the slapstick schemes of his mentors, and the seduction of success, all while staying true to his girl and himself. We are transported from the Caribbean to the Pacific and Costa Rica to Transylvania as our likable guide vividly describes his many misadventures, triumphs, flirtations, and, above all, his amusing and astute insights into human nature. DEALS ON FLIGHTS TO HAWAII : DEALS ON FLIGHTS
Deals On Flights To Hawaii : Why Are One Way Flights So Expensive : Discount Flight In Europe. Deals On Flights To Hawaii
Amelia Earhart and George Putnam Amelia Earhart was already an accomplished pilot when she met George Putnam, having accumulated over 500 hours of solo flight time. He interviewed her for a transatlantic flight on which she was a passenger, four years before her famous 1932 solo flight across the Atlantic. George was a famous New York publicist and explorer, and the two had many interests in common. They hiked, camped, rode horses, and played golf and tennis together. George had to propose to Amelia six times before she accepted. After a good deal of hesitation, Amelia and George were married in early 1931. Amelia wrote of their relationship, “[o]urs is a reasonable and contented partnership; my husband with his solo jobs, and I with mine; but the system of dual control works satisfactorily and our work and our play is a great deal together.” Amelia continued her aviation career after marriage under her maiden name, and George organized her appearances and publicity to fund her flights. She promoted flight luggage and sports clothes, and George published two of her books, The Fun of It and Last Flight. Amelia disappeared during an around-the-world flight in 1937. While flying on one of the final segments of her globe-spanning journey, radio controllers lost contact with Amelia's plane. She was low on fuel, flying low and searching for a place to land in the Pacific ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. Despite an extensive and expensive naval search, no evidence of Amelia or her plane was found. Two years later, George had her declared dead and published her biography, Soaring Wings. Here's Where We Would Go Our plan for our first day was a helicopter tour that would take us over Volcanoes National Park, and then we'd fly to a "secluded" valley and land for a bit. We were on the 7:30 tour which meant we needed to be at the Kona airport at 6:45--not that big a deal since we'd been getting up early for most of the vacation. After checking in (and weighing in) and going through a safety briefing, we waited outside for our pilot. A short time later Jessie (our pilot) came out to tell us that they were looking at the weather reports and it was looking like there was too much cloud cover. He used a map to explain where we would go and to show where the clouds were that were blocking our view. He wanted to delay the flight by 30 minutes so he could hear back from another pilot that was flying over the volcano and check the weather reports that would be more clean when the sun was higher. It turned out the trip was not to be--he said he didn't want us to get a tour of the different kinds of cloud Hawaii has to offer. Fortunately it was our first day and we had time to reschedule (we ended up going on our last full day). Fortunately we had some flexibility in our schedule, so we decided to visit Kailua and do the coffee plantations this day instead. CHEAPEST ONE WAY FLIGHTS. WAY FLIGHTS

Raleigh One Way After researching singlespeeds and fixed gear bicycles for about two years I finally took the plunge in to the singlespeed world with a 2007 Raleigh One Way. As a new bicycle commuter I was debating on buying an older steel lugged bike off Craigslist or buying a new bicycle that I knew would be more of a "production" bicycle. The One Way caught my attention because it seemed to bridge the gap of finding the style of a vintage road bike and the price point of a modern production bicycle. The following are my thoughts on some of the key features of the One Way. Steel frame - Finding a steel frame with relaxed geometry was top on my priority list. All of the fixed gear track bikes are cool to look at but a little too upright for commuting in my opinion. In today's aluminum saturated bicycle market it's refreshing to see companies like Raleigh re-introducing steel frames at a competitive price point. Personally, I don't think the ride quality of a steel frame can be beat for commuting purposes. With respect to the fork I liked the lugged crown which added a nice vintage detail and the curvature of the fork also added to the retro look I desired. One of the other frame design features I liked was the horizontal dropouts and the front and rear fender braze ons. Interestingly I noticed a second pair of braze ons on the front forks that I'm guessing allows for a front rack to be easily mounted. Details like horizontal dropouts and fender braze ons can make or break that beautiful 1970s $50 Craigslist frame you had great intentions of converting only to find it wasn't realistic when you brought it home. The One Way avoided the post-Craigslist blues altogether with attention to detail on the design. Tires - I've heard good things about Vittoria tires but I was concerned on the front end that the tread pattern would be a little too aggressive for street use. After riding on the stock Vittoria Cross tires I was very impressed not only with the speed but also the width. The width of the stock tires is perfect for commuting and I don't think I would change this spec on my next set. After these wear out I will probably switch them out to a more true road tire like the Vittoria Randonneur or a Schwalbe Randonneur tire. Brakes - The cantilever brakes allow for fenders (which come standard) on the One Way but also allow for a wider tire and, in my opinion, better braking power. Weight - I was shocked at how little this bike weighs. Chain - Big manufacturing mistake here. Thanks to Richard I was given a warning that the chain might be too short when the rear wheel is taken off and flipped on the freewheel side. I had my local bike shop set up the One Way as freewheel and thankfully it was in their hands for this procedure because sure enough the chain was too short and they had to add an extra link. If you are considering the purchase of a One Way please keep this in mind. Quite possibly I received an earlier production One Way and this minor detail could have been addressed by now. Fenders - Love the fenders! I'm by no means a fender expert and, in fact, this is my first experience riding a bike with fenders. I was surprised at how light the standard SKS fenders are and the overall aesthetic achieved with the silver color adds to the beauty of the One Way. I might later upgrade to some Honjo fenders that have a more chrome appearance but for now now the SKS will suffice. Bars/Stem - The bars are perfect for commuting. Nothing too extraordinary in the bar tape/bar combination but it does the job comfortably. Of particular note is the chrome bar end detail that Raleigh added (very nice!) With respect to the stem there are five or six spacers that I'm not quite sure are necessary. Maybe Raleigh's thought was to add versatility depending on the owner's riding position but personally I would like to have seen a taller stem so as to avoid the unsightly spacers. In conclusion, the Raleigh One Way fills a unique niche in the commuter market. Raleigh says on their website, "The Raleigh One Way is our idea of the perfect single speed commuter." I would take this another step and say that it is THE perfect commuter. If you live in an incredibly hilly area then you too can benefit from a One Way thanks to the technology of an internally geared hub like Shimano's Nexus. The One Way easily transforms in to a classic French randonneur look simply by adding chrome fenders, rear/front rack, a Brooks saddle, and Brooks bar tape. If the classic look isn't your style simply remove the fenders and rear brake and you've got the clean and simple messenger style. For the money I cannot find a better commuter elsewhere. Happy commuting! Flight Sim Joystick Mount Needed a way to properly mount the amazing Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS throttle and stick. 4 hours including shopping and paint drying. 2’x 4’ particle board base—4" black ABS (cheap black plastic pipe) end cap bolted down, insert 4" x 14” pipe and screw in place, sand pipe lightly and paint. Attach joystick to unpainted removable 4" ABS plug (you need four new M4 X 16 or longer screws), insert...and now your joystick is between your legs where it belongs. ;-) One gripe: the removable plug I found (YMMV) has a recessed lip so there's a 1/16" gap between the ABS plug and the base of the joystick. If I can find thick 4" o-ring it will solve that problem. Only tricky part is properly drilling, counter-sinking, and aligning the holes in the particleboard base and the ABS removable plug. Next project is a retractable mount for the throttles, so they're down by my thigh where they belong, but can be slid back out of the way under the desk when I'm not flying. Some kind of modification to a prebuilt top mount drawer, I'm guessing, maybe a keyboard arm. Dirt-Cheap Survival Retreat: One Man's Solution The standard survival retreat advice has always been to find a remote place in Idaho or Montana, with at least 20 acres, a 2,000-square-foot log cabin and a bunker underneath, a barn, pastureland, and a stream running through the property. But how many of us can afford such a spread without a crippling mortgage? If you can't make the hefty payments on your survival retreat, the bankers will evict you, leaving you worse off than those who failed to prepare in the first place. M.D. Creekmore's motivation for finding a low-cost retreat was the need to live on a lot less money after he lost his job and got divorced. He started living in a travel trailer, parked on two acres he'd bought a few years back to use as a campsite and bug-out location, never dreaming he'd be living there full time. But he has called his trailer home for the past four years and says that "for the first time in my life, I'm actually content." Living off the grid in a travel trailer isn't for everyone. But if you are looking for a way to own a debt-free home—and enjoy the security that comes with it—here's the author's dirt-cheap plan for finding suitable land; buying a used trailer; securing it against the elements and intruders; providing alternative power sources; dealing with water and waste issues; maximizing your space; and establishing a workable storage system for food, water, medicine, tools, and other equipment. The good news is that the author has done the hard part for you. (19) IMG 1189 Dirt Cheap Life Insurance Wonder if I can get some dirt cheap medical insurance? Dirt Cheap It's contents are dirty and cheap. At last, truth in advertising. europe dirt cheap airline tickets AC/DC's 1981 album digitally remastered and reissued in a special digipak plus a 16 page full color booklet containing all original album art, many unpublished photos, classic memorabilia and new 2003 liner notes. Epic. While Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap sounds like every other AC/DC album, it is distinguished by a lyrical puerility spectacular even by Bon Scott's standards. Two tracks--"Love at First Feel" and "Squealer"--are ruminations on the morality of sex with schoolgirls. "Big Balls," ostensibly a narrative from the perspective of an aristocrat socialite, is actually a somewhat labored excuse for the band to chant "We've got big balls." This juvenile posturing was, to a large degree, AC/DC winding up their burgeoning foreign audience by playing to stereotypical expectations of Australians. On Dirty Deeds, however, AC/DC try too hard. Only on "Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire)" is Scott's laconic wit deployed to real effect: the sheer glee in the line "Get your fuckin' jumbo jet off my airport!" is almost worth the album's purchase price. --Andrew Mueller Similar posts: cheap one way flights to india flight safety maintenance training space flight sim games cheap flights to muscat cheap flights to townsville buy online air tickets flight accident insurance |

It set many aviation records during the race and afterwards as a pioneer mail plane. Black Magic First to take off at 6.30 a.m. on October 20 were Jim and Amy Mollison in their own G-ACSP Black Magic. They made a faultless journey to Baghdad, and reached Karachi at around 10 a.m. on the second race day, setting a new England-India record. Problems began for the Mollisons when their landing gear failed to retract, and after returning Karachi for repairs they were again delayed by an inability to navigate at night Further problems followed when they made an unscheduled refuelling stop at Jobbolpore but found no aviation fuel. Running instead on fuel used by the local bus company, an engine piston seized and an oil line ruptured. They flew on to Allahabad and retired Grosvenor House The scarlet G-ACSS was the property of Mr.A.O.Edwards and was named Grosvenor House after the hotel which he managed. The crew were Charles W.Scott and Tom Campbell Black. When the Mollisons ran into problems at Karachi, C.W.A. Scott & Tom Campbell Black took over the lead and were first into Allahabad. Despite a severe storm over the Bay of Bengal they reached Singapore safely, 8 hours ahead of the DC-2. They took off for Darwin, but over the Timor Sea lost power in the port engine when the oil pressure dropped to zero. Repairs at Darwin got them going again, although continuing oil warnings caused them to fly the last two legs with one engine throttled back. Their lead was unassailable despite this, and after the final mandatory stop and more engine work at Charleville they flew on to cross the finish line at Flemington Racecourse at 3.33 p.m. (local time) on October 23. Their official time was 71 hours 18 seconds. G-ACSR The third plane G-ACSR had been paid for by racing driver Bernard Rubin and was flown by Owen Cathcart Jones and Ken Waller. They had to make a second unscheduled stop at Baghdad after they found they had had a serious oil leak. They were forced to delay for repairs which were carried out by T.J.Holmes. They caught up with the Mollisons at Karachi. They were the fourth plane to reach Melbourne, in a time of 108 h 13 min 45 s. Cathcart Jones and Waller promptly collected film of the Australian stages of the race and set off to carry it back to Britain. Their return time of 13? days set a new record. G-ACSR, renamed Reine Astrid flew the Christmas mail from Brussels to Leopoldville in the Belgian Congo in 1934.[1] It was then sold to the French government as F-ANPY and set a Croydon-Le Bourget record of 52 minutes on July 5, 1935. It subsequently made Paris–Casablanca and Paris—Algiers high-speed proving flights. Black Magic was sold to Portugal for a projected flight from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro. Reregistered CS-AAJ Salazar it made various flights from London to Lisbon, setting a time of 5 h 17 min in July 1937. Grosvenor House was later fitted with Gypsy Six series II engines and made several race and record attempts under various names. It claimed fourth place in the 1937 Marseilles-Damascus-Paris race, and later the same year lowered the out-and-home record to the Cape to 15 days 17 hours. In March 1938, Arthur Edmond Clouston and Victor Anthony Ricketts made a return trip to New Zealand covering 26,450 mi (42,5A fourth Comet, F-ANPZ, was built for the French government, with a mail compartment in the nose. The fifth and last Comet named G-ADEF Boomerang was built for Cyril Nicholson, and piloted by Tom Campbell Black (of Grosvenor House fame) and J.C.McArthur in an attempt on the London-Cape Town record. It reached Cairo in a record 11hr 18 min but the Cape Town attempt was abandoned due to oil trouble. 67 km) in 10 days 21 hours 22 minutes Grosvenor House has been restored to flying condition as it was in the MacRobertson race, and is housed at the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden in England. Black Magic was found in a ruinous condition in Portugal in 1979. It is currently undergoing restoration in Derby, England. G-ADEF crashed in Sudan September 22, 1935. The crew escaped by parachute. G-ACSR and F-ANPZ were destroyed in a hangar fire at Istres in France in June, 1940 Victoria Cross In Memory of Flight Sergeant GEORGE THOMPSON V C 1370700, 9 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died age 24 on 23 January 1945 Son of James and Jessie Thompson, of Glencraig, Fife. Remembered with honour BRUSSELS TOWN CEMETERY The London Gazette of 16th February 1945 gives the following details : Flight Sergeant Thompson was the wireless operator in an aircraft which attacked the Dortmund-Ems Canal by daylight on 1st January, 1945. Just after releasing its bombs, the aircraft was hit by a heavy shell which set it on fire and caused extensive damage. Flight Sergeant Thompson without hesitation went through the fire and exploding ammunition and rescued the gunners from the mid-upper and rear gun-turrets, both of whom were unconscious. With his bare hands he extinguished their burning clothing. He then with great difficulty made his way back through the burning fuselage to report to the captain of the aircraft. He might have devoted his efforts to quelling the fire, but preferred to go through it to save his comrades, hazarding his life. Three weeks later he died of his injuries. One of the gunners he rescued survived; he owes his life to the gallantry of Flight Sergeant Thompson, whose courage and self-sacrifice will ever be an inspiration to the Service. (6) Travel tips While on my flight I wrote down some thoughts about travel planning, preparedness and resourcefulness. When choosing a seat on an airplane think about the sun's position. If you're often cold on flights or just like basking in the sun choose the right side for west to east flights and left side for east to west. If it's a morning north to south flight remember the sun will be on the east side and afternoon flights it will be on the west side. Snag the plastic laundry/dry cleaning bag provided in most hotel rooms. put your dirty clothes in there for the return trip or use it to double bag your toiletry kit in case of leaks. As a non-coffee drinker i never use the in-room coffee maker but now do for two reasons. If it's a local blend it makes a neat stocking stuffer for a coffee lover. The rest will go in our bed and breakfast or be tucked into a cupboard for when friends or family visit and they need their coffee. (We'll just need to get a coffee maker now.) A smartphone has multiple uses for travelers. Check flight status, weather, or other services while at the airport. Play games like solitaire. Listen to mp3s. I have a list of things to pack or remember before leaving the house and another list of things to do or buy while out of town. Having phone numbers for local cab companies, your hotel, and your airlines is always a good idea. Didn't remember? There are programs or websites that can help you get phone numbers or addresses quickly and easily. You can compose blog posts (like i'm doing now) for later uploading without the person next to you seeing your screen easily. you can post pictures to flickr and directly to your blog when you're allowed to connect to service. Use the built-in camera to photograph the things in your checked luggage spread out on your bed - filing a claim for the value of lost luggage becomes much easier. Use the camera to photograph any damage to your rental car that wasn't on the rental company' s records and show them the picture before you pull out of the lot. If you get into an accident take pictures of any damage and the position of the vehicles. Your insurer will be grateful. To Become Like Gods The Mediterranean, 13th Century BC. A ship is travelling from Athens to Knossos, carrying Prince Theseus and a group of soldiers who are destined to enter the Labyrinth to fight the brutal and ruthless Minotaur in a tournament to the death. They encounter a young man adrift in the sea. Hauling him on board, he claims he is Icarus, son of Daedalus inventor of the Labyrinth and that he has fled from Knossos in fear of his life, using a flying machine developed by him and his father. He goes on to warn them of a terrifying plot by Knossos to poison Athens's water supply to annihilate the city's population so Knossos can invade with little or no resistance. Sceptical of both the man's identity and his story, the soldiers must ultimately decide if in fact they do believe him and if so, how they can defeat the Minotaur and prevent the attack on their home city. The ancient Greek myths of Daedalus & Icarus and the Labyrinth have been told for many centuries but this pulsating adventure novel, overflowing with incident, unearths the true, incredible story behind those myths. A captivating, exciting book led by strong characters and dramatic battle scenes, it covers themes of military ambition, genocide and intrigue that are as relevant today as they have always been, so it is a powerful work of contemporary fiction that just so happens to be set in the past. Algorithmic Algebra (Monographs in Computer Science) Algorithmic Algebra studies some of the main algorithmic tools of computer algebra, covering such topics as Grobner bases, characteristic sets, resultants and semialgebraic sets. The main purpose of the book is to acquaint advanced undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, engineering and mathematics with the algorithmic ideas in computer algebra so that they could do research in computational algebra or understand the algorithms underlying many popular symbolic computational systems: Mathematica, Maple or Axiom, for instance. Also, researchers in robotics, solid modeling, computational geometry and automated theorem proving community may find it useful as symbolic algebraic techniques have begun to play an important role in these areas. The book, while being self-contained, is written at an advanced level and deals with the subject at an appropriate depth. The book is accessible to computer science students with no previous algebraic training. Some mathematical readers, on the other hand, may find it interesting to see how algorithmic constructions have been used to provide fresh proofs for some classical theorems. The book also contains a large number of exercises with solutions to selected exercises, thus making it ideal as a textbook or for self-study. (5) horizon Before the sunrise This is a pic taken on my way from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar. What a journey it was; SPLENDID! It was 31st December, 2007 and the flight took off a li'l before sunrise, capturing on its way, the celebration of entire metro! And for those like me who felt only humans were entitled to New yr's celebrations, this scene is surely an eye-opener. After the experience at Port Blair, I count this among the best lived moments of my life so far. The feel of the flight maneuvering through the dancing colors in the sky was an experience I'l hate to forget. Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple & Bindu Sagar : BHUBANESWAR mumbai to bhubaneswar flight When Orissa was constituted as the eleventh province of British India in 1936, the need for a new capital was immediately evident. In explaining the political, economic, and religious reasons for constructing the new capital of the region at Bhubaneswar, Ravi Kalia notes the often conservative attitudes of the Oriyan people, who initially opposed the transformation of this revered site into a capital city. Before it became the capital of Orissa in 1948, Bhubaneswar had been a temple town and an important Hindu cultural and religious center to followers of Buddhism, Jainism, Shaivism, and Vaishnavism. The presence of so many different religions in fact gave the city its pluralistic character, one of the factors responsible for its eventual selection as the capital city. The German planner Otto Koenigsberger was hired to implement the design of the new capital city. As Kalia explains, Koenigsberger and the Oriyas disagreed broadly in concept, with Koenigsberger perceiving the development of New Bhubaneswar along secular lines. He saw a flourishing city with political autonomy, organized commercial relationships, and brave new architecture that could accommodate the requirements of modern life. In contrast, the Oriyas wanted the city to retain its close relationship to its religious past. As a result, the conflicting concepts of temple town and capital city struggled for dominance. In the end, even though Koenigsberger provided a master plan, the developments in Bhubaneswar were carried out by British-trained Indians eager to find their own identity. The final shape and style of Bhubaneswar, Kalia concludes, bear the imprint of Indian religion as much as that of Western rationalism. (10) The hotel between the earth and the clouds - L'Hotel fra la terra e le nuvole This lonely hotel is located in a gorgeous place. The view is truly awesome and being there, even if just for a day, brings a taste of wild. Of course, there are many other beautiful places in the world, but that one has something special. Just behind the mountain white for the snow, there is a big lake. The lake is surrounded by other mountains all around, and in winter they look like a necklace of white pearls. When the cold winds from north blow in the late winter or early spring, the humid air is pulled away from the green surface of the lake and it is pushed against the sides of the mountains around. All of the sudden, many thick, soft clouds spawn litterarly out of the void of the blue sky, in a matter of seconds. Those clouds appear very tiny at first, then grow up and start to show their shadows on the ground. Finally they are fully torn by the invisible convey belt of the higher winds. It's like to witness their birth. And it is possible, sometimes, to feel directly the intimate connection between the gale yelling and the size, the speed and shape of those white entities. From the windows of that lonely hotel, it's hard to resist to the temptation of waving gently the hand and say goodbye to each of those newly born clouds, just before they get swallowed again in the depths of the far sky. E' come vederle nascere. The release of this device is a major achievement from a design and technology perspective. This isn't just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 305 is the most accurate, most reliable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we've ever tested. Yes, it's that good. While no device this compact can do everything (yet), the 305 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist. The 305 model includes wireless heartrate monitoring and it can also be connected to Garmin's wireless bicycle speed and cadence sensor. If you don't need these features, consider the lower-priced Forerunner 205. View Garmin's Forerunner demonstration video. Choose from 12 data fields to display on the 305's screen. View larger. The design cleverly integrates the GPS antenna and aims it towards the sky when you're running or walking. View larger. The simple docking cradle makes charging and data connectivity a snap. The Virtual Partner function makes your workouts more competitive. View larger. Choose from three workout modes that help you target your training goals. View larger. The 305 features rudimentary mapping and location marking functions. View larger. Design The 305's design is a radical departure from Garmin's previous generation of wrist mounted GPS devices, which reached a pinnacle with the Garmin Forerunner 301. While the 301 delivered accurate heart rate monitoring, good performance tracking, and decent GPS reception, it didn't quite deliver in the design department. The form factor was bulky and wearing it wasn't much different than duct taping a full-sized GPS device to your wrist. Not so with the 305. Garmin's engineers obviously burned the midnight oil and have come up with a waterproof design that, while certainly not as small as a sports watch, feels just as comfortable. The curved casing allows the unit's antenna to face the sky when you're running, while the widescreen display is perfectly positioned for viewing when you need it. And the display certainly deserves a few kudos. While it's smaller than the display found on previous Forerunners, its resolution is far higher, offering incredible clarity and crispness. Garmin has smartly given the 305 a simple button layout and the buttons have a nice tactile feel with good pressure response. The right side houses the menu selection and enter buttons, while the left houses a power/backlight button and a mode button. This simple and elegant solution is a big improvement over the sometimes confusing button functionality of previous Forerunners. View button layout. The underside of the 305 is pretty nondescript, except for a row of contacts that interface with the included charging and data cradle. The cradle is small and unobtrusive and its single mini-USB port connects to either an included AC adapter, or a USB cable that connects to your PC. In addition to data transfer with the USB cable, you can also charge the 305's embedded lithium-ion battery via a powered USB connection from your computer. GPS Performance The big news about the Forerunner 305 is that it features an integrated, high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver. What does this mean? It means that the 305's ability to both track, and maintain a lock on, your position is better than anything before it. After an intial battery charge, the tester had the 305 on his wrist and was tracking speed and distance with GPS satellites within 3 minutes. The next time we used the 305, satellite acquisition was nearly instantaneous. A run through dense trees didn't faze the unit either; tracking remained true and steady. Performance on a bike was equally impressive. Whatever witchcraft has been cooked up by the designers of the SiRF technology, we like it! While the Forerunner 305 isn't billed as a GPS navigation device, it does have some rudimentary mapping, waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. In addition to marking locations along your journey, you can zoom in or out of a simple map that displays your current direction and path. There's also a "go to location" feature that routes you back to your starting location, or to any location you have defined. Once you have defined several locations, you can save this information as a route, allowing you to travel the same path in the future. As you'll see below, the 305's new "Courses" feature gives you new levels of control over how you define your favorite runs and rides. Training Functions The 305 is first and foremost a training tool, and its ability to organize a ton of data types into a user experience that is intuitive and simple is no small feat. Whiz-bang technology aside, if you can't use it and make it a natural part of your exercise routine, it's worthless. When it comes to these factors -- and here's the take home message on the 305 -- this device is successful where many other devices fail. The heart and soul of the 305 can be found on the data screens, which give you real-time information about all aspects of your workout. In fact, the 305 can display a dizzying array of data, such as calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and heading, as well as multiple lap and pace modes. The 305 adds the ability to track heartrate, lap heartrate, average heartrate, and heartrate zones via the included coded heartrate chest strap. With the purchase of a separate wireless cadence and speed meter, you can also track bike performance data. Thankfully, the device makes it easy to define how much or how little data you want to view during a workout. You can arrange the data that's most important to you and then make that data appear front and center on the device. Indeed, within a few minutes of skimming the manual and fiddling with the device setup, you'll have your most important data displaying just the way you like it. The ability to display heartrate is a big plus, too, as it's a fairly good indicator of excercise output, fatigue, and fitness level. The 305 has all the heartrate functions you'd expect from a full-function monitor, including the ability to set target zones and alerts to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts. Garmin's Virtual Partner function was cool feature of previous Forerunners and they've decided to keep a good thing going with the 305. If you're the type that performs best when you've got a competitor egging you on, you'll love this function, as it allows you to set up virtual running or biking companions that compete against you. If you're looking for an complicated workout with a variety of intervals and intensity levels, or just a quick three-mile jog against your best time last week, the 305 has you covered. Navigating to the Workouts menu on the device yields three options: Quick Workouts, Interval, and Advanced Workout. A quick workout is just that; set the distance and time, distance and pace, or time and pace of your planned workout and off you go. Interval workouts are just the same, but they allow you to add repetitions and rest between them. When you really want to get fancy with your exercise, you can step up to advanced workouts, which include goals for each workout step, as well as varied distances, times, and rest periods. You can use the Garmin Training Center software to set up these workouts and then upload them to the device. PC Connectivity and Software Garmin has been outfitting their devices with USB connectivity for some time now -- a welcome move for those who struggled with serial port connections in the days of yore. Thanks to USB, the 305 integrates seamlessly with the Training Center software and we quickly had workout history uploaded and stored on the PC (Sadly, Training Center is not Mac-compatible). Not only does Training Center make it easy to track your performance, you can graph data such as heartrate alongside your speed and distance. Over time, this is a great way to view your fitness levels increase, and it also helps you see what types of workouts are necessary to strengthen your weaknesses. For instance, if you see your heartrate begin to spike after a certain distance, you know you need to increase your endurance workouts to train that area of fitness. In a first for the Forerunner series, the Training Center software also lets you define courses on your PC that you can upload to the device. When course information is combined with uploaded workout information, the Forerunner becomes a complete guide, telling you where to go, when to make a turn, and what kind of workout to do when you're on the road or path. Back on the PC, the software's ability to overlay workout data on maps of the course makes it easy to see where the course offers up the tough hills and the easy recovery spots. Plus, the ability to track historical performance on a given course is a great way to measure your improvement. The 305 is also fully compatible with Garmin's MotionBased service, which takes your training to another level by connecting your data with the Internet. While we weren't able to use the service, the promise of sharing courses, maps, workouts, and performance data with other users is intriguing. And if you're a serious endurance athlete, you'll be glad to know that the 305 is also compatible with TrainingPeaks.com, an easy-to-use web based training system designed to help athletes train for any event. Pros Radically new design is better in every way Amazing accuracy and fast satellite acquisition time So simple to set up and use, you will actually use it Cons No Mac OS compatibility Okay, it's bigger than a sport's watch -- but so much more powerful What's in the Box Forerunner 305, Garmin Training Center CD-ROM, heart rate monitor, docking cradle, expander strap, A/C charger, USB cable, owner's manual, quick start guide. But what fun is that? Enter Elaine Louie, a New York Times staffer who writes on food, design, and style. What better person to suss out the spots where the most stylish of Londoners dine while staying solvent? Tracking down leads from architects, curators, designers, and other sources with discriminating taste and exacting palates, Louie profiles fifty venues that would be considered great finds at any price and where a meal (not counting tip and beverage) can be enjoyed for less than $25. The restaurants range across ethnicities, and include a substantial number of traditional British and Continental restaurants. They deliver on decor (cool, charming, and/or beautiful) and the food (not necessarily three-course meals, but sometimes more modern, light dining) is always memorable. Follow the leads of fashionable epicures to: • Baker & Spice, a chic spot favored by the impeccably dressed “yummy mummies,” young mothers who savor the best quiches in London and golden-crusted meat pies filled with baby veggies fresh from the British countryside• the “darling and simple cafe” atop four floors of fashion in the hip Dover Street Market, centrally located near Bond Street• Crazie Homies in hip Westbourne Grove, where the food is inspired by street vendors and taquerias found throughout Mexico and is freshly made from authentic recipes–try the potent yet refreshingly smoky margaritas• Jin Kichi, the tiny Hampsted eatery, bedecked with red paper lanterns, where the delectable fare means the place is usually filled with Japanese expats The venues are located in city-central locations and hip neighborhoods and a few of the best are even tucked away in museums and department stores, making this a highly practical guide for travelers who need to plan their time efficiently. In addition to the fifty restaurants with full profiles, the author has included short descriptions of another two dozen places worth visiting. On Great White Wings: The Wright Brothers and the Race for Flight On the eve of the hundredth anniversary of the historic events at Kitty Hawk comes a splendidly illustrated account of the legendary twelve-second flight that changed the world forever. On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright took to the air for less than a minute, accomplishing what mankind had only dreamed of for centuries. Now, almost one hundred years later, this definitive account offers a unique look at the Wright Brothers' achievement, and at the many experiments that led up to their momentous ride. Revealing the brothers' youthful interest in technology and flight, the authors recount the trials and errors of other would-be aviators, and explain how the race to be the first man aloft became an international obsession. Readers will learn how The Flyer -- the Wright Brothers' original plane -- was built, and how its indefatigable inventors solved the challenges that stumped their predecessors. And finally there is the historic flight itself -- what went wrong and what, amazingly, went right -- and the enormous impact the Wright Brothers had on their own and future generations. Written in engaging, accessible prose and, featuring more than 200 photographs and illustrations, On Great White Wings will delight anyone interested in the history of flight and in the fantastic story behind the twentieth century's most important achievement. (19) Caen Hill Flight Caen Hill Locks are a flight of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, between Rowde and Devizes in Wiltshire England. The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (72 m in 3.2 km) or a 1 in 44 gradient. The locks come in three groups. The lower seven locks, Foxhangers Wharf Lock to Foxhangers Bridge Lock, are spread over 1.2 km. The next sixteen locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside. Because of the steepness of the terrain, the pounds between these locks are very short. As a result, 15 locks have unusually large sideways-extended pounds to store the water needed to operate them. A final six locks take the canal into Devizes. This flight of locks was engineer John Rennie's solution to climbing the very steep hill, and was the last part of the 87 mile route of the canal to be completed. Whilst the locks were under construction a tramroad provided a link between the canal at Foxhangers to Devizes, the remains of which can be seen in the towpath arches in the road bridges over the canal. A brickyard was dug to the south of the workings to manufacture the bricks for the lock chambers and this remained in commercial use until the middle of the 20th century. Because a large volume of water is needed for the locks to operate, a back pump was installed at Foxhangers capable of returning 32 million litres of water per day to the top of the flight, which is equivalent to one lockful every eleven minutes. In the early 19th century, 1829–43, the flight was lit by gas lights. The locks take 5–6 hours to travel in a boat and lock 41 is the narrowest on the canal. After the coming of the railways, the canal fell into disuse and was closed. The last cargo through the flight was a consignment of grain conveyed from Avonmouth to Newbury in October 1948. From the 1960s there was a major clearing and rebuilding operation, culminating in a visit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 to officially open the new locks and the flight. DSLR travel kit For the past year I've been using this Rubbermaid Handi-box Snap Case to pack my Canon 5D, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, Canon 100mm f/2.8 L macro lens or a Canon 135mm f/2 lens (either/or), a pouch with extra batteries and CF cards, a blower, and a strap. The only part of the kit that won't fit in this plastic case are the two lens hoods for the lenses and they go in my LowePro Stealth Reporter 200 bag. I'd put this stuff in the bag but in fact, it's better protected in this plastic case and the bag holds battery chargers and computer stuff I don't need on the plane. The camera is in a small, padded Eagle Creek pouch and the lenses are in Zing lens pouches. I've used this system to pack and check my camera gear on each of my JFK to LAX flights for the past year (7 trips) and it's worked beautifully. used to carry the Stealth Reporter bag on the plane as a carry on but given that I check a piece of luggage I figured why not check this stuff? I also check a small Benro travel tripod and head. I know, many of you are thinking this is a recipe for disaster: TSA will take my gear, it will get broken one of these days, or the bag will get lost. All of these are possible but in fact, I've done this numerous times now and nothing has happened except I get to travel lighter on the plane. I looked into Pelican cases but I don't need such a high end case, just something that will protect the gear in case of a direct hit. These 5 images show the kit in various states of unpack/pack. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I have a soft sided North Face rolling duffel and this case goes on the bottom with clothing on top of it. It has never moved or been compromised in any way and TSA has never opened it (that I know of) so it must look like camera gear in the x-ray image. Something to consider for those of you who travel with a DSLR kit that you don't want to lug on the plane. Free Space It is the twenty-third century, and large space habitats have evolved where individual societies exist without formalized government-a galactic federation called Free Space. These are stories of the men and women of this new era, visions of adventure, social speculations, and downright arguments about freedom and responsibility. Free Space offers fiction from Hugo and Nebula Award winners such as Poul Anderson, Gregory Benford, and Robert J. Sawyer, and particularly from winners of the Prometheus Award of the Libertarian Futurist Society, such as Victor Koman, Daffyd ab Hugh, and L. Neil Smith. In addition, there is work from William F. Buckley, Jared Lobdell, John Barnes and a number of other writers, making Free Space a big, rich, varied compendium of politically-engaged science fiction adventure. This is a libertarianist anthology of (mostly) original stories that, depending on your tastes, can be too narrowly focused or wonderfully concentrated. The "Free Space" in the title is just that: a loose federation of space habitats that has no central government. Free enterprise rules, and the editors let 20 authors ranging from William F. Buckley Jr. to William F. Wu have their way with it. The result is mixed, but on the whole successful, and it definitely makes for interesting reading. Several of the writers are winners of the Libertarian Futurist Society's Prometheus Award. (9) I Hope This De-Frag Helps 83-0-11 ... Last night I ran the de-frag program on my computer. This is a screenshot of the results. At first it wouldn't run because you have to have at least 15% free space on your hard drive. I had something like 7%. I worked for several hours to delete things I didn't really need to have at my fingertips ... knowing I have everything backed up on an external hard drive. Of course I got distracted when I came across items of interest that I wanted to do something with ... like put it on flickr. The next attempt at de-frag worked, as I'd gotten the free space up to 17%. It ran all night and into the next day. I still have lots of duplicate files and worthless items to delete another day. . (15) NASA Wallops Flight Facility Launch Pad 0B Gantry NASA Wallops Island, VA. This evening was the first of a 5 day widow for a nighttime launch of a Minotaur I Rocket. I had a front row seat about 1.5 miles from the launch pad, unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and the mission was scrubbed for the evening. I was hoping to capture some images as the candle was lit for the 12 minute flight to orbit. This brought back some memories as I used to recover nosecones from launches at this facility many decades ago. On one recovery mission I found the second stage of the rocket, NASA officials were thrilled when I informed them that the intact stage with it's stabilizer fins was aboard the recovery ship. Payload information for this mission: TacSat-3 satellite features three revolutionary trials: the Raytheon Company-built Advanced Responsive Tactically Effective Military Imaging Spectrometer hyperspectral imager, the Office of Naval Research's Satellite Communications Package, and the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Avionics Experiment. This trio of payloads will offer real-time imagery (within 10 minutes of collection), sea-based information transmitted from ocean buoys and plug-and-play avionics to assist the warfighter in keeping one step ahead of the adversary. The PharmaSat experiment, developed by NASA’s Ames Research Center and will measure the influence of microgravity upon yeast resistance to an antifungal agent. PharmaSat focuses on questions key to countermeasure development for long-term space travel and habitation. Three cubesats will be launched as secondary payloads on the TacSat-3 mission. The satellites, which contain their own power and data systems, are four-inch cubes that weigh 2.2 pounds each. The cubesats are being provided by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; The Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, Calif. and the Hawk Institute for Space Sciences, Pocomoke City, Md. The three satellites are placed in a Poly Picosatellite Orbital Deployer (P-POD), the standard deployment system for cubesats. The P-POD was developed by the Aerospace Engineering Department at Cal Poly. During the rocket’s ascent, each cubesat will be deployed separately from the P-POD into space.
