Pension Building

The National Building Museum is housed in the former Pension Bureau building, a brick structure completed in 1887 and designed by Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs, the U.S. Army quartermaster general. The building is notable for several architectural features including the spectacular interior columns and a frieze sculpted by Caspar Buberl stretching around the exterior of the building depicting Civil War soldiers in scenes somewhat reminiscent of those on Trajan's Column in Rome as well as the Horsemen Frieze of the Parthenon in Athens. The vast interior, measuring 316 ft. (96 m) ? 116 ft. (35 m), has been used to hold inauguration balls since the building's construction and a Presidential Seal is set into the floor near the south entrance.

Following the end of the Civil War the United States Congress passed legislation that greatly extended the scope of pension coverage for both veterans and for their survivors and dependents, notably their widows and orphans. This ballooned the number of staff that was needed to implement and administer the new benefits' system to over 1,500 and quickly required a new building out of which to run it all. Meigs was chosen to design and construct the new building and in doing so broke away from the established Greco-Roman models that had been the basis of government buildings in Washington D.C. up until then, as was to continue following the Pension Building's completion. Meigs based his design on Italian Renaissance precedents, notably Rome's Palazzo Farnese and the Palazzo della Cancelleria.

Included in his design was a sculpted frieze executed by Caspar Buberl. Since creating a work of sculpture of that size was well out of Meigs' budget he had Buberl create 28 different scenes, totaling 69 feet (21 m) in length, which were then mixed and slightly modified to create the continuous 1,200 foot (365 m) long parade that includes over 1,300 figures. Because of the way that the 28 sections are modified and mixed up, it is only by careful examination that the frieze reveals its self to be the same figures repeated over and over. The sculpture includes infantry, navy, artillery, cavalry and medical components as well as a good deal of the supply and quartermaster functions, since that was where Meigs served during the Civil War.

Meigs's correspondence with Buberl (see Joyce McDaniel) reveal that Meigs insisted that a black teamster — "must be a negro, a plantation slave, freed by war" — be included in the quartermaster panel. This figure was ultimately to assume a position in the center, over the west entrance to the building.

In a period before modern artificial ventilation the building was designed to maximize air circulation. All offices had not only exterior windows, but opened onto the court which was designed to admit cool air at ground level and exhaust hot air at roof level. Constructed of brick and tile the stairs were designed with the limitations of disabled and aging veterans, having a gradual ascent with low steps. In addition, each step slanted slightly from back to front to allow easy drainage- a flight could be easily washed by pouring water from the top.

When Philip Sheridan was asked to comment on the building his reply echoed the sentiment of much of the Washington establishment of the day, that the only thing that he could find wrong with the building was that it was fireproof. A similar quote is also attributed to William Tecumseh Sherman so the story might be apocryphal.

The completed building, sometimes referred to as "Meigs Old Red Barn" was created by using more than 1,500,000 bricks, which, according to the wit of the day, were each counted by the parsimonious Meigs.

Hong Kong Hustle

I was due to visit our Shenzhen factory anyway. And an HK airfare+hotel package was cheaper than the price of just a plane ticket. So it's a buy-one-get-one weekend in HK for the two of us as I could get reimbursed for my part, and the company actually saves money in the process.

According to ornithologists once you start feeding the birds in your garden you are committed:

“Don’t start to feed them if you aren’t willing to keep up the responsibility for life.”

Who’s life? Mine or theirs?!

I don’t really understand why, once they receive my offerings, they will abandon all of their instinctive, ingrained knowledge of foraging and become incapable of feeding themselves.

Regardless of this warning I believed that I had just such a responsible nature to be able to commit to my garden birds.

So out was hung an extortionately expensive cage filled with the kind of nuts and seeds one would see sprinkled on a ?20 salad in some poncy Notting Hill eatery. Over the next few days I found reasons to go into the kitchen frequently. I stood by the window peering.

The garden had never looked so barren of life.

I decided it was my looming presence that they could sense through the windows that kept them at bay. I took to creeping into the kitchen wearing khaki, holding myself very still, avoiding looking directly at the nuts in case they were upset by the whites of my eyes or the movement of my eyelids. For weeks, nothing. Not even a swinging cage to suggest I had just missed the action.
I started to wonder how long I should expect it to take for the local birds to notice a new feeding place. How does it happen anyway? Does it just require one bird to do a mid-flight double take on his way over my garden? Do they then stake out the new table to check its validity, checking off necessary requirements before they can patronise it?

Is it comparable to a new Starbucks appearing in a previously un-chartered high street? It takes a while for consumers to register its presence and put it on their daily route.

My garden it seems was not on a flight path…..the nuts still sat after two weeks, coagulating, full to the brim and untouched by beak.

I was reminded of Kevin Costner’s film, Field of Dreams and its famous line,

“If you build it he will come.”

But Kevin doesn’t ask the question that would naturally follow such a comment, “But how long will it take for him to come? Should I leave him space to arrive on his own or do I watch and wait around the clock? I need to know, I have other things to be doing and I don’t want to build it and then be waiting around for this guy forever.”

Had the birds still not forgiven me for once having a cat? While Edward was still alive birds did not get fed, rather they were fed upon. I tried to explain to him that the numbers of garden birds were dwindling due to the domestic cat (I’m not sure whether he associated himself with such a term) and I would ask could he not at least limit his massacres to mice. (Not that I wanted him to kill at all). He could not. I would walk barefoot out onto the lawn and feel headless corpses underfoot like shells on the tide line.

When I first attempted bird feeding, many years ago I put out a fat ball. It dangled from a bush by the fence and seemed to be accepted by the birds ridiculously quickly. . . it took just a couple of days to get through a ball - they were loving it, although I never saw them feeding.Then one day, from my bedroom window I saw movement on the ball. . . it appeared to be spinning slowly, like a granny browsing a rack of postcards in a souvenir shop. I bounded down the stairs, was this some kind of rare, shy bird nestling in the bush, painstakingly selecting only the choicest lumps of ball?

No.

I had for the past few weeks been fattening up a large rat. As I came eyeball to bulging, beady eyeball with it, it continued to spin the ball slowly and seemed to be thinking “I suppose you are expecting me to leave now.” It duly tumbled clumsily down through the bush and disappeared in a flurry of violently swaying foliage.

The warm feeling from nourishing such a creature was not quite as satisfying as the pretty little birds. We humans are so fickle! Just because it is a disease-spreading pest, doesn’t come in pretty colours and can’t stop its teeth from going yellow or it’s tail from being bald we don’t want to help it survive, “I want to feed starving little creatures! Oh, but not that ugly one!”

Eventually I was accepted into the Michelin book of bird feeders and now they flock to me. I’m so popular I have even opened a second feeding station.

But now I have got what I wanted I feel terribly burdened with responsibility…what if I move house? Do I have to include a clause about looking after the birds in the contract? What if I put out cumbersome nuts that cause chicks to choke to death? What if they all develop allergies? I have made a rod for my own back and a huge hole in my purse.

I took the bus partially because I wanted to save money but also partially because there are no cheap flights going from Paris to Croatia. There's Croatian airlines, but they hold a monopoly so they jack the prices.

The difference was either 130 euros (bus) or 800 euros (flight)... screw that.

Yerba Buena Island sits in the San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland, California. The Yerba Buena Tunnel runs through its center and connects the western and eastern spans of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. It has had several other names over the decades: Sea Bird Island, Wood Island, and Goat Island. The island is named after the town of Yerba Buena, which was named for the plant of the same name that was abundant in the area. The plant's English and Spanish common name, Yerba buena, is an alternate form of the Spanish hierba buena (literally meaning "good herb"), generally used to describe local species of the mint family.

The island is currently part of District 6 of the City and County of San Francisco. According to the United States Census Bureau, Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island together have a land area of 2.334 km2 (0.901 sq mi) with a total population of 1,453 as of the 2000 census.

The Zeppelin has a rigid structure of aluminum and carbon fiber, and its interior bags are filled with non-flammable helium (Hindenberg flammable hydrogen) . Maximum speed 78 mph, but it cruises at 35-40 mph and 1200 feet for tours, using 4 vectored thrust engines. Since the scenery is to me a very important part of the ride, I chose not to fly now.

Billions over budget and years late this aircraft was almost cancled at the start of the year, and there are still some doubts as to the financing agreed to by the purchasing partners. Meant to be displayed at the 2008 ILA, its just good to see her flying. The display pilot had no problems with pushing the aircraft to the limit, including the turn where it is pushed about 15 degrees beyond knife edge.

This particular aircraft is MSN001, the very first one built. MSN002 is already flying, and soon MSN003, MSN004 and the production representative MSN006 will join the flight testing. (MSN005 was cancled due to budget cuts).

To some modern country artists, the words critics are using to describe Eric Church's third studio album may seem off-putting, but to the trailblazing mutineer and his equally passionate fans, the terms: "strange," "aggressive," "wild," and "rare," couldn't be more complimentary. Church's third studio album, Chief, has been buzzing as the most experiential, head-turning country album of the year.

"I have a theory that all of us [artists] only get a small window of time to make records when people will really listen and care," said Church. "It's up to us to move the needle. People like Waylon and Cash or Garth and Strait,-- they all took the format and said, We're going over here,' and they each changed the direction of the music a little bit-- helping to make it what it is today."

That desire to move the needle is the very reason Church has chosen to use the successes of six Top 20 country singles ("How Bout You," "Two Pink Lines," and "Guys Like Me" from his 2006 critically-acclaimed debut, Sinners Like Me; "Love Your Love The Most," "Hell On The Heart," and "Smoke A Little Smoke" from his sophomore release Carolina) and an ACM Award for New Solo Vocalist of the Year to push the creative envelope even further with Chief. Church took a month off and went to a secluded cabin in North Carolina to reflect and write the entire album which he later recorded in Nashville with producer, Jay Joyce (Patty Griffin, Cage the Elephant), who also produced his previous two releases.

The songs that resulted from the diversion illustrate Church's impressive range and infinite creative canvas. Songs like "Drink in My Hand" and "Hungover & Hard Up," illustrate his ability to connect with a rowdy audience. Other songs like "Springsteen" and "Like Jesus Does," reveal a deeper emotions complemented by sophisticated song structures; and then there's "Homeboy" the provocative lead single and Church's fastest-rising career single to date-- that's already turning heads and causing critics from USA Today and Billboard to champion the release.

The "alive and breathing" feel of the new music inspired Church to name the album, Chief, after a nickname given to his grandfather, and one he has consequently adopted over the years out on the road. "When it's show time, I put on the sunglasses and the hat, and that's how people know it's game time. This album was made from a live place; we recorded it with the live show in mind, so it just seemed right to make that the title," he adds.

With the release of his third studio album, Church hasn't forgotten the true captains of his career his loyal fans. "More than anyone else, we have built are career on the backs of the fans," he says. "We have not had a lot of TV exposure or number one songs, but we have had music that stirs passion, we put on shows that stoke the flames of that passion, and our fans have carried the torch. Our music belongs to them."

Archer County Fire

There is rule in medivac flying that states that the pilot is not to know who the patient is (or their condition) prior to making the decision as to whether the weather is suitable for flying. On this day, we were yellow for weather due to turbulence, high surface winds, and high winds aloft. None of it was forecasted to be over our limits, but was going to be near limits the entire last half of my shift. Well, thanks to my flight medic, that rule went out the window this day.

Lewis is the Assistant Chief of a local Volunteer Fire Department and routinely had his fire radio turned on in his room to keep up to speed on what was going on in the local area. We were all aware of the fact that there was a large grass fire burning in Archer County and were spring loaded to respond to a call in case something happened. As I was relaxing in the pilot's room, Lewis came in and with all the excitement that he could muster, said, "We gotta go, there's been an accident and a firefighters injured!!!!!" (Yes, he did speak with five exclamation points). What he should have done was come in and ask for a weather check for Archer County so that I would have been able to check the current conditions. If things had happened as they should have, I would have turned to flight down as not only was the surface winds right at my limits, the winds at 500' above the surface was in excess of 40 knots with moderate turbulence. Instead, I quickly donned my shining armor and we all ran to the helicopter to defy gravity and save his life!

Almost immediately upon getting airborne, Jim (a highly experienced flight nurse) said, "Doug, if this is too much we can go back and land." Looking back, I think that was his way of saying that this may be too much for his comfort level. While we were getting our backsides bounced around pretty good and I don't think that neither Jim nor Lewis would have been disappointed if I had gone back to the pad, I said that things were manageable and that, "We are going to go and get this guy."

I've been a pilot for more than thirty years and have thousands of hours of flight time in both airplanes and helicopters...can I tell you that I've never had a rougher ride than I did that day. While we were in no danger of an accident happening, I had my hands full from the moment we took off until the second that we landed. I had to keep our airspeed down to reduce the effects of the turbulence, but we got there quickly due to a high tailwind. Unfortunately, that meant slow going back to the hospital as that tailwind became a headwind on the way back.

I started thinking about the approach and landing while on the flight back and knew that we were looking at a potential problem. The pad is a ground pad on the north side of the six story hospital and the winds on the surface was a good 30 knots straight out of the north. This would require a very steep approach from the south right over the hospital. Because of the airflow over and around the building, the turbulence created by this alone may make the required approach path unusable. I had Lewis call and have an ambulance on stand by at Kickapoo Airport in case we needed to divert.

I shot what had to have been my slowest approach that I have ever done and stayed right on my approach path all the way to the pad. As soon as the skids touched the ground, I rolled the throttle to idle and stated, "I need a beer!" As Jim and Lewis got the patient to the ER, I briefed the oncoming pilot (it was now the end of my shift) about the weather conditions and advised that he wait before going to the airport to refuel (he readily took my advice).

While I was taking care of things from the flight, Jim returned from the ER and handed me a five dollar bill. I asked him what it was for and he said, "First beer's on me tonight." I thanked him for the thought and after finishing my paperwork went to the ER to see how our patient was doing. Everyone that I saw there said that they were shocked that we were flying in the wind that day. I told them all that while it was an E-Ticket ride, it was one that I never really would want to do again.

I found out later that for all his years as a flight medic, Lewis said that was the only time that he was ever afraid in a helicopter. I told him that is what he gets for not following protocol and asking for a weather check!

In this shot you can see the smoke from the fire and the ambulance where is patient and medcrew is located as they prep the patient for the flight back to United Regional Healthcare in Wichita Falls, Texas. I had to twist around in my seat and reach my arm back with the camera in my hand and shoot through the open litter door of our trusty Bell 206 LongRanger IIIE.

The New Archer Fire burned in excess of 7,400 acres in both Archer and Young Counties.

[6:48] Mitz Xi: "Lets see... I walked into the station.. on my own.. with no cuffs on... and your bitch chief swings a baton at me? Is that how you question people nowadays.. then maybe I should be beating the shit out of you now"

[6:49] Jazon Checchinato looks to Ashur "Once more.. do you really think I'm stupid?"

[6:49] Ashur Kentoku looks back at Jazon...`Actually yes, I do.`

[6:49] Jazon Checchinato shrugs "Don't see why ya do... I seem to recall helping your family when you were a Commander in the Catwalker pride.."

110419 Members of No. 453 Squadron undress the coffin prior to lowering it during Flight Lieutenant Henry ‘Lacy’ Smith’s funeral service at the Ranville War Cemetery, France

A touching burial for Flight Lieutenant Henry ‘Lacey’ Smith occurred in the morning of the 19th April 2011, with full military honours being paid. Members of No. 453 Squadron (453SQN) from the Royal Australian Air Force, FLTLT Smith’s former squadron, paraded as a mark of respect for the fallen pilot. FLTLT Smith was from Sans Souci in Sydney NSW, and was shot down by anti-aircraft fire on 11th June 1944. His spitfire aircraft crashed into the River Orne, near Caen, in northern France and was not discovered until 2010.

The first Australian squadron to go into action on 6th June 1944, 453SQN, operated from advanced bases in the beach land providing tactical support for the troops landing on the Normandy beachhead. The squadron carried out operations that included harassing the retreating enemy, attacking enemy convoys, bombing missions, armed reconnaissance and bomber escort duties.

Today 453SQN is a Joint Battlefield Airspace Control squadron, headquartered at RAAF Base Williamtown.

This is the last Comet 1 built. Initially operated by Air France as F-BGNZ. Following the Comet crashes due to fatigue, the aircraft were withdrawn and redesigned, this one was refitted with oval windows and strengthened skin. The aircraft was then operated for the Ministry of Supply on trials with the military serial XM823 until retired, Now displayed in BOAC colours to represent the pioneering Comet 1s of that airline even though it never flew in those colours.

NYC - Civic Center - New York County Courthouse

The Supreme Courthouse (New York County Court) overlooks Foley Square and is located between Worth and Pearl Streets. The building houses the Supreme Court and the Office of the County Clerk. In 1927 the New York County Court moved from the old Tweed Courthouse to this spacious granite-faced building. The Boston architect Guy Lowell won a competition in 1913 with a design for a round building. Construction was delayed and the design altered to a hexagonal form; work finally began in 1919. The Roman classical style chosen was popular for courthouse architecture in the first decades of the 20th century. The courthouse was the first major New York commission for the well-known Boston architect Guy Lowell (1870-1927). He designed the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the building plan for Philips Academy at Andover, Massachusetts. He was also a landscape architect and designed formal gardens for Andrew Carnegie and J. Pierpont Morgan in New York. The courthouse rises above a 100-foot wide flight of steps to an imposing colonnade of 10 granite fluted Corinthian columns. Above the columns are engraved words of George Washington: "The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government." Above this is a triangular pediment, 140-feet long, with 14 classical figures in high relief. Along the huge roofline are three statues representing Law, Truth and Equity. All of the pediment sculpture was carved by Frederick Warren Allen.

Foley Square is named for Thomas F. “Big Tom” Foley (1852-1925), a prominent Democratic Party leader from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Foley left school at the age of thirteen to support his widowed mother, working for a period as a blacksmith’s helper. In 1877 he began his active connection with politics as a Tammany election district captain and rose to be First Assembly District leader.

In the open-ended space action/adventure game Freelancer you play a ne'er-do-well with a lucky streak, one of two survivors of a space disaster. Penniless and shipless, you venture around a space dock until you find a ship and a job. You'll encounter a heady mix of canned missions that follow one main quest, and a million opportunities to make money or aggravate the various factions that co-exist in the universe. Like an online role-playing game, or Bethesda's Morrowind, you determine who your enemies are and who your friends are by your own actions, and, in another nod to role-playing, you can customize your ship with guns, rockets, and equipment just as you would customize a RPG character with swords, bows, and magic items. Best of all, you can play cooperatively with friends or fight it out with enemies online.
The backstory posits a future where various countries, divided by both nationality and, seemingly, race, have boarded massive colony ships and ventured into a wormhole that appeared within reach of our crude space technology. They found themselves in a galaxy far, far away and they got stuck there when the wormhole collapsed. They quickly colonized new home worlds and named everything with familiar locales that make navigation a breeze. In the American sectors you'll feel at home entering the New York system and landing at a spaceport called Manhattan, for example. While contrived, this device is used beautifully and it's far better than having to memorize a bunch of sci-fi names and remembering where they are, perfect for a massive universe such as this one.
Though Freelancer is set in space, it is technically not a space simulation. The game was designed to be accessible to casual gamers. For example, Freelancer makes you use the mouse for ship control. This is quite a shift for a game genre normally known to require joystick control. But even old-school Wing Commander or X-Wing fans may find that the sacrifice of verisimilitude is made up for with gains in agility. The mouse controls your guns, while you use the keyboard to maneuver around the rich universe that developer Digital Anvil has constructed. Much like a first-person shooter, you can dodge and weave while precisely blasting your enemies.
Despite the game's age, its graphics are spectacular, as is the sound and voice acting, and in that way, fighting and trading with friends or alone, Freelancer proves worth the wait. Just keep in mind that it is explicitly not a hardcore space simulation, and you'll have to leave your joystick on the shelf. --Andrew S. Bub

Iraqi Airways Boeing 727-200, 747-200, Baghdad International Airport (BIAP), Iraq

Iraqi Airways was founded in 1945. The first planes used were Dragon Rapids. For the next fiscal decade, until 1955, these planes were alternated with Vickers Viscounts. By 1955, however, the Viscounts took over all of Iraqi Airways' services.
The 1960s arrived, and so did the jet age. Iraqi Airways was quick to modernize, buying Russian built Tupolev TU-124 planes as well as British built Tridents. These jets allowed Iraqi Airways to increase service across the Middle East, to Africa and Europe. During that time, cargo airplanes such as the Il-76 arrived.
During the 1970s, Iraqi Airways was granted a route to JFK International airport in New York, and because of that, it needed a bigger jet, so it went to (then) Seattle based Boeing and bought 707 jets. Soon after, the Boeing 747 also arrived.
Iraqi Airways kept flying during the 1980s to most cities where it had established routes to. The Iraq-Iran war did little to undermine the airline's activities. In what could be considered by some to be an ironic twist to the trend, in 1986, a Boeing 737 of Iraqi Airways, flying from Baghdad to Jordan, was attacked by terrorists. Although the plane tried to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, the terrorists threw a bomb into the plane's cockpit, and its destruction caused the plane to crash resulting in the deaths of 61 of the 93 people on board . Iraqi Airways has, to date, had ten air tragedies.
Since Iraq's invasion in 1991 of Kuwait, Iraqi Airways has been grounded by the United Nations’ sanctions against Iraq. Before the invasion started, Iraqi Airways had 17 jets, all of which were moved to secret locations, mainly in Jordan.
Through that ordeal, many of the airline’s 800 employees stayed faithful, and their mechanics supposedly even owned Iraq's only jet engine, where they would practice in hopes the airline would someday need their services as much as it once did.
Because Iraqi Airways was allowed to fly domestically, it continued service to smaller cities, such as Basra. However, domestic flights became a rarity too, because of the No-Fly Zone imposed by the United States and United Kingdom over Iraqi skies. On occasions, Iraqi Airways would also fly pilgrims to Saudi Arabian religious cities during the '90s.

The Airbus A330-200 is a shortened but longer-range stablemate of the A330-300, entering service in 1998, four years after the -300. Launched in 1995, when sales for the -300 were flagging, it was developed to compete with the Boeing 767-300ER. The A330-200 is ten fuselage frames shorter than the original A330-300, with a length of 58.82 m (193 ft 0 in). To compensate for the smaller moment arm of the shorter fuselage, the -200's vertical stabiliser's height was increased by 104 cm (3 ft 5 in) over that of the A330-300. The -200's wing was also modified.

If you are a fan or collector of Pan American World Airways items, this movie needs to be in your collection. This is a very interesting look at the behind the scenes activities on a 1959 Boeing 707 flight from Idyllwild airport to Paris. We follow the arrival of the pilot and maintenance chief as they prepare jet clipper N709PA as flight 116. On December 8, 1963 this aircraft was in a holding pattern awaiting an instrument approach to the Philadelphia International Airport when it was struck by lightning. Immediately thereafter, the aircraft was observed to be on fire. A large portion of the left wing separated in flight and the aircraft crashed in flames approximately ten nautical miles southwest of the New Castle, Delaware VOR. All persons aboard, 73 passengers and eight crew members, perished in the crash and the aircraft was destroyed. Flight 116 has to be checked out and takeoff for Paris in three hours and we follow the process as the 707 is made ready. It is interesting to see how the planes were inspected prior to flight and then taxied into position at the gate. Captain Don Michaels prepares for the flight to Paris. He reviews the weather and then sits down with the entire flight crew and tests them on procedures. We get to meet the stewardess, navigator, flight engineer and copilot. Jet clipper N709PA, N710PA, N711PA and Clipper Tradewind are featured in the film. The food on the flight is delivered to the plane in a truck with a sign that says "Clipper Cuisine by Maxim's of Paris." The menu includes pheasant, roast beef, lobster and champagne The cabin door to the cabin is closed and four minutes latter they are in the air. Nice exterior shots of the 707 taxing by. As the plane becomes airborne you get to see an aerial view of Idyllwild airport. A very nice film on the overview of the Boeing 707, jet travel in the late 1950s and Pan American World Airways operations.

KANYE WEST IN THE STUDIO

I had a chance to kick it in the studio with Kanye West on Wednesday in California. He was putting the final touches on his latest album 808s & Heartbreak and allowed me to sit in for a couple of hours and observe. The vibe was really laid back and Kanye was playing his Super Nintendo (Super Mario World) and munching on Cap’n Crunch for the first half.

Don’t get it twisted though, the hard work came for sure when Kanye, Plain Pat, No ID and crew were finalizing the drums and sounds of the whole album and since I hit up his listening party/event on Tuesday night, he asked me what my favorite songs were. I’m definitely feeling the new track “Robocop” and told him that needed to be the next single.

My T-Mobile BlackBerry gets shitty service when I'm downtown, and it just so happens that a certain stall in the women's bathroom on the third floor of a building I frequent has it's own private (and odd) window through which I am able to get my occasional internet fixes throughout the day. Don't judge me.

The view is imperfect, just overlooking the lower floors of the building, but sitting on the window sill is nice regardless. Although I'm sure a locked stall with a lack of legs poking out from under the door may be somewhat disconcerting.

Anyways, I just thought the little Kanye dig was a highlight of my otherwise junky day.

I hate flying nowadays--arranging a ride to the airport, getting to the airport early, the lines, the ridiculous restrictions, the even more ridiculous fees for everything, the cramped (and now always full cabins) with no leg room, delays, and on and on.

That's a big part of the reason we take mostly road trips nowadays, even though it would sometimes be faster to fly.

A road trip to Tennessee would take too long, and that's where my family was gathering for Thanksgiving this year, so I booked our tickets a few months ago and immediately started dreading travel day.

It turned out it wasn't so bad. There was no line at security, and we were able to fit everything into one carry-on and one backpack each meaning we didn't need to check any bags. We've become experts at the 3.4oz-or-less liquid rule (I made sure to get the 3oz version of my gel deodorant instead of the 4oz the last time I needed to buy more).

The weather also cooperated, meaning our flights were all on time and fairly uneventful. Sure, the seats still had no leg room--but at least I could stretch my leg into Benson's area. But all-in-all the flights to Tennessee and back were uneventful. Maybe I won't dread the next flight quite so much...

From the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online:
McLEOD, ALAN ARNETT, air force officer; b. 20 April 1899 in Stonewall, Man., son of Dr Alexander Neil McLeod and Margaret Lyllian Arnett; d. 6 Nov. 1918 in Winnipeg.

According to the Stonewall Argus, in January 1909 nine-year-old Alan McLeod exhibited the same courage, kindness, and modesty that he would later display as a pilot with the Royal Flying Corps. He removed a trap from the foot of a stray dog, but did not seem to understand why others fussed over his exploit. Only four years later he accompanied a detachment from Stonewall on militia training with the 34th (Fort Garry) Horse.

When World War I broke out in 1914, 15-year-old McLeod wanted to enlist, but was unable to do so because of his age. At 17 he tried to join the cadet wing of the RFC in Toronto, and was told to wait until his next birthday. Finally, he received word to report for a medical examination on 23 April 1917. His last day of school fell on his birthday; his classmates and teachers gave him a rousing send-off.

After training at Long Branch and Camp Borden, Ont., McLeod received his wings by the end of July and was commissioned second lieutenant on 19 Aug. 1917. He embarked for England on 20 August and reported to 82 Squadron of the RFC at Waddington, Lincolnshire. He was disappointed to learn in November that he was not allowed to accompany his squadron to France. Combat would have to wait until he was 19.

He enjoyed a brief career as a night fighter pilot, defending London against German air raids. He really wanted to be at the front, however, and somehow managed to convince the authorities that he should not have to wait. He reported to 2 Squadron at Hesdigneul-Les-Bethune, France, on 29 November. This was an unglamorous corps squadron, concentrating on day and night bombing, photography, and cooperation with the artillery. McLeod took to his duties with enthusiasm. He appears to have been popular because of his youth, his exuberance, and his proficiency as a pilot.

McLeod made his first flight over France on 30 Nov. 1917. On 19 December he and his observer, Lieutenant J. O. Comber, had a “Scrap with 8 huns [German Albatros scouts],” claiming that “1 spun away.” Less than a month later, on 14 Jan. 1918, with Lieutenant Reginald Key as his observer, he attacked a kite balloon at Bauvin, sending it down in flames. Such an attack was considered a hazardous act for a fast, man?vrable fighter plane. In a lumbering machine such as an Armstrong Whitworth FK8 it was almost foolhardy. In addition to the balloon, Key destroyed an Albatros. Both men were mentioned in dispatches for this action.

On 27 March McLeod and his observer, Lieutenant Arthur Hammond, took off into low clouds with five other planes to assist the Allied armies by bombing and strafing enemy concentrations around Bray-sur-Somme. They put down at a British airfield after the members of the formation “lost each other,” but resumed their mission alone after lunch. McLeod later wrote to his parents, “We went quite a piece over the line and were just going to drop my bombs . . . when all of a sudden a whole flock of Bosch came out of the clouds on us there must have been 8 or 10 anyway, I foolishly stayed to scrap [with] them.” Initially they had some success, claiming three enemy shot down, but the numerical advantage and superior man?uvrability of the Fokker triplanes soon proved too much for them. Their FK8 was hit in a number of places and burst into flames from the fuel tank in front of the cockpit.

Had aircrew worn parachutes in those days, McLeod and Hammond could have chosen to jump. As it was, they had to ride the aircraft down from at least 2,000 feet as best they could. McLeod managed to side-slip steeply so that most of the flames missed them. When the lire came too close, he swung a leg out of the cockpit. With one foot on the lower left wing and the other on the rudder pedal, he brought the plane towards the Allied lines. Hammond lost the floor of his cockpit in the fire and had to sit on the coaming, with his feet “on the bracing wires at the side of the fuselage.” All the while McLeod kept him in a position to return the enemy’s fire. Despite being wounded six times, Hammond claimed to have shot down three pursuers. Crash-landing in no man’s land within range of enemy fire, McLeod, already hit five times himself, was wounded again by a bomb that went off as he half dragged, half rolled Hammond away from danger. He managed to get him into a shell hole before collapsing from exhaustion and loss of blood.

It was some time before South African troops in the closest friendly trench could rescue the flyers and remove them to the reserve trenches. They then spent several hours there under enemy bombardment until stretcher-bearers took them to the rear under cover of darkness. McLeod ended up at Prince of Wales’ Hospital in London. Northwest Airlines WorldPlane (scale model)

Photo taken at Flight Path Museum at the south end of Los Angeles International Airport, covering the history of aviation, especially as it pertains to LAX.

This is a scale model of a Northwest Airlines Boeing 747-400. Northwest had been the very first airline to operate the 747-400 in 1989; it initially ordered fourteen but took delivery of only ten. (#11 and #12, in production when canceled, were picked up by United.) The last of the ten, N670US, was given this special livery in the mid-1990s, to mark Northwest's 50 years of service to Asia, featuring artwork by children from Asian cities served by Northwest.

Northwest, along with Pan Am, was the definitive US airline operating across the Pacific, and the Pacific routes were what allowed Northwest to continue surviving and thriving despite a weak domestic network. When United bought Pan Am's Pacific routes in 1986 and became the first US airline with strength both domestically and across the Pacific, Northwest fought back by merging with Republic Airlines and launching European services. Northwest even went on to order six additional 747s after this "50 Years of Bridging the Pacific" promotion ended. But the post-9/11 slump and the market pressures led Northwest into bankruptcy, and eventual merger with Delta. The Northwest name, which had been the oldest US airline name in continuous use, disappeared into history in January 2010.

Today, N670US and all other Northwest 747-400s continue to fly on, as part of the Delta fleet and in the 2007 New Delta livery. They also mark the return of the Boeing 747 to Delta for the first time since 1977.
