For many years, it has been known that when rats and mice are given a reduced amount of food, their life span is increased and they remain healthy and vigorous at advanced ages.
What is the reason for this change in the usual pattern of aging? The evidence is overwhelming that the life extension results from a slowing of aging processes. And the factor responsible is the decrease in caloric intake. The obvious question: How does this factor work? A good question - and the reason that research on the anti-aging action of caloric restriction is today one of the most studied research areas in biological gerontology. For it is felt that if the biological mechanisms of the anti-aging action of caloric restriction can be uncovered, we would gain an understanding of the basic nature of aging processes, which would, in turn, yield possible interventions in human aging. This book aims to provide the growing number of researchers in this field (faculty, postdoctoral trainees, and graduate students) with a detailed knowledge of what is known about caloric restriction within the frame of gerontology, as well as insights on future of this field.

I hate flying nowadays--arranging a ride to the airport, getting to the airport early, the lines, the ridiculous restrictions, the even more ridiculous fees for everything, the cramped (and now always full cabins) with no leg room, delays, and on and on.
That's a big part of the reason we take mostly road trips nowadays, even though it would sometimes be faster to fly.
A road trip to Tennessee would take too long, and that's where my family was gathering for Thanksgiving this year, so I booked our tickets a few months ago and immediately started dreading travel day.
It turned out it wasn't so bad. There was no line at security, and we were able to fit everything into one carry-on and one backpack each meaning we didn't need to check any bags. We've become experts at the 3.4oz-or-less liquid rule (I made sure to get the 3oz version of my gel deodorant instead of the 4oz the last time I needed to buy more).
The weather also cooperated, meaning our flights were all on time and fairly uneventful. Sure, the seats still had no leg room--but at least I could stretch my leg into Benson's area. But all-in-all the flights to Tennessee and back were uneventful. Maybe I won't dread the next flight quite so much...
