Flying Buttress Construction

Flying Buttress Construction

Flying buttress construction; designed by those clever 'civil engineers' from the middle ages.

Photo: York Minster.

From Wikipedia:

A flying buttress, or arc-boutant, is a specific type of buttress usually found on a religious building such as a cathedral. They are used to transmit the horizontal thrust of a vault across an intervening space (which might be an aisle, chapel or cloister), to a buttress outside the building. The employment of the flying buttress means that the load bearing walls can contain cut-outs, such as for large windows, that would otherwise seriously weaken them. Flying buttresses are often found in Gothic architecture.

The purpose of a buttress is to provide horizontal strength to a wall. The majority of the load is carried by the upper part of the buttress, so making the buttress as a semi-arch provides almost the same load bearing capability, yet in a much lighter and cheaper structure. As a result, the buttress seemingly flies through the air, rather than resting on the ground and hence is known as a flying buttress.

Though employed by the Romans in early Romanesque work, it was generally masked by other constructions or hidden under a roof. However, in the 12th century it was recognized as rational construction and emphasized by the decorative accentuation of its features, such as in the cathedrals of Chartres, Le Mans, Paris, Beauvais, and Reims.

Sometimes, for the great height of the vaults, two semi-arches were thrown one above the other, and there are cases where the thrust was transmitted to two or even three butts across intervening spaces. Normal buttresses would add significantly to the weight of the overall structure, so the flying buttress is an essential aspect of the architecture. Because a vertical buttress, placed at a distance, possesses greater power of resistance to thrust than if attached to the wall carrying the vault, vertical buttresses like those at Lincoln Cathedral and Westminster Abbey were built outside the chapterhouse to receive the thrust. Vertical buttresses are usually weighted with pinnacles to give greater power of resistance.

This technique has also been used by Canadian architect William P. Anderson to build lighthouses at the beginning of the 20th century.

Lord of the Flies (Perigee)

14.5 Million copies sold to date

The classic, startling, and perennially bestselling portrait of human nature-now available as a Premium Edition with a stunning new cover and re-set, easy-to-read text.

William Golding's classic tale about a group of English schoolboys who are plane-wrecked on a deserted island is just as chilling and relevant today as when it was first published in 1954. At first, the stranded boys cooperate, attempting to gather food, make shelters, and maintain signal fires. Overseeing their efforts are Ralph, "the boy with fair hair," and Piggy, Ralph's chubby, wisdom-dispensing sidekick whose thick spectacles come in handy for lighting fires. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility, there are many in their number who would rather swim, play, or hunt the island's wild pig population. Soon Ralph's rules are being ignored or challenged outright. His fiercest antagonist is Jack, the redheaded leader of the pig hunters, who manages to lure away many of the boys to join his band of painted savages. The situation deteriorates as the trappings of civilization continue to fall away, until Ralph discovers that instead of being hunters, he and Piggy have become the hunted: "He forgot his words, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet." Golding's gripping novel explores the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, all on the brutal playing field of adolescent competition. --Jennifer Hubert

THIS LYING SCUMBAG PRETENDING TO BE A "PRESIDENT" ....... EVEN USES HIS MOTHERS NAME IN A LIE TO GAIN POLITICAL ADVANTAGE........AND OF COURSE LATER ON TO HELP PASS OBAMACARE

Fresh doubt cast on Obama's health care story
By: Byron York | Chief Political Correspondent 07/11/11 8:05 PM

Then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) addresses a rally in the gymnasium of Concord High School January 4, 2008 in Concord before the 2008 New Hampshire primary, where the Democratic presidential hopeful made this remark examined by Examiner columnist Byron York: "She was in her hospital room looking at insurance forms because the insurance company said that maybe she had a pre-existing condition and maybe they wouldn't have to reimburse her for her medical bills."During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama often discussed his mother's struggle with cancer. Ann Dunham spent the months before her death in 1995, Obama said, fighting with insurance companies that sought to deny her the coverage she needed to pay for treatment.
"I remember in the last month of her life, she wasn't thinking about how to get well, she wasn't thinking about coming to terms with her own mortality, she was thinking about whether or not insurance was going to cover the medical bills and whether our family would be bankrupt as a consequence," Obama said in September 2007.

"She was in her hospital room looking at insurance forms because the insurance company said that maybe she had a pre-existing condition and maybe they wouldn't have to reimburse her for her medical bills," Obama added in January 2008.

"The insurance companies were saying, 'Maybe there's a pre-existing condition and we don't have to pay your medical bills,' " Obama said in a debate with Republican opponent Sen. John McCain in October 2008.

It was a simple and powerful story, one Obama would tell many more times as president during the national health care debate. But now we're learning the real story of Ann Dunham's health coverage is not quite what her son made it out to be.

The news is in "A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama's Mother," a generally admiring new biography written by former New York Times reporter Janny Scott. According to the book, Ann Dunham, an anthropologist who spent most of her working life in Indonesia, moved from Jakarta to New York in 1992 to work for a nonprofit called Women's World Banking, which encouraged micro-lending in Third World countries. Unhappy in New York, in 1994 Dunham took a job with an American company called Development Alternatives, which had a contract with the Indonesian State Ministry for the Role of Women. Dunham returned to Jakarta to work, and Scott reports the job provided Dunham with health insurance, a housing allowance, and a car.

At the time she took the job, Dunham was increasingly worried about her health; she was suffering from intense abdominal pains. In November 1994, Dunham went to an Indonesian doctor who diagnosed appendicitis. As Dunham debated whether to leave the country for surgery, she called her boss at Development Alternatives. "You've got health insurance, that's taken care of," the boss told her. "We can cover the airfare."

Dunham decided to stay in Jakarta, where she underwent an appendectomy. But the pain did not go away, and Dunham feared, correctly, that she was terribly ill. In January 1995 she left Indonesia to go home to Honolulu, where she was diagnosed with advanced uterine and ovarian cancer. She began a regime of surgery and chemotherapy.

That is the time during which Obama says his mother battled insurance companies to cover her illness. But Scott, who had access to Dunham's correspondence from the time, reveals that Dunham unquestionably had health coverage. "Ann's compensation for her job in Jakarta had included health insurance, which covered most of the costs of her medical treatment," Scott writes. "Once she was back in Hawaii, the hospital billed her insurance company directly, leaving Ann to pay only the deductible and any uncovered expenses, which, she said, came to several hundred dollars a month."

Scott writes that Dunham, who wanted to be compensated for those costs as well as for her living expenses, "filed a separate claim under her employer's disability insurance policy." It was that claim, with the insurance company CIGNA, that was denied in August 1995 because, CIGNA investigators said, Dunham's condition was known before she was covered by the policy.

Dunham protested the decision and, Scott writes, "informed CIGNA that she was turning over the case to 'my son and attorney, Barack Obama.' " CIGNA did not budge.

In September 1995, Dunham traveled to New York for an evaluation at the renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Returning to Hawaii, she began a new course of treatment. She died in November.

A dozen years later, her son t

Jay is the manager of the Days Inn in Plymouth. He told me the story of his uncle (a U.S. citizen by the way) who had a heart attack and required a triple bypass operation. “He didn’t have insurance, though and the operation would cost about $118,000.” There was no way that he could pay that money—the money that would save (or at least extend) his life. And so he ended up having the operation in India which, with airfare, cost about $35,000. Jay shook his head. “It doesn’t make sense how America can’t take care of Americans”

Jagatnatha drinks. Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia

Pura Jagatnatha (=Temple of the Lord of the World), Denpasar, Bali. On the rainy day of our visit, there was only this small concession selling water and orange juice to slake our thirst. They were the embodiment of relaxation; hence this photo.
The temple is merely 50 years old (1953) although it gives the impression of being highly venerable. It is quite large, which is fitting for Ida Batara Sanghyang Widhi, whose bright, gold statue sits high in the middle of the complex on a throne of white coral placed upon the sacred world turtles. In Bali Hindu theology, he is the Supreme God, from whom issue forth many divine manifestations (like the forms of Shiva). In this sense, Balinese Hinduism is a a kind of monotheism. The temple is extremely busy during the feasts of Saraswati, Tilem, and Purnama. Saraswati is the festival of knowledge, when there is a great book devotion during which offerings are made especially to the sacred books fashioned from lontar palm leaves (it may be related in this precinct to the Perpustakaan [=library] mentioned on the signboard). This festival is frequented by students, as might be expected. Saraswati is the goddess of learning and wisdom and insight, indeed of ‘the essence of the self’. Tilem is the new moon festival, a time that is excellent for exorcising evil(s), and Purnama is the feast of the full moon, particularly propitious for the planting of fruit trees.
A fascinating place in itself with very friendly believers, the temple is bounded on the right as you face the main entrance by the enormous collections of the Bali Museum (poorly lit, however, but highly fascinating).
And, yes, we did buy some water even though it was raining, to the delight of the vendors

Denpasar: Webster's Timeline History, 1946 - 2007

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Denpasar," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Denpasar in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Denpasar when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Denpasar, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Okay, with the help of Dr. Pat, I have been working with LAB and trying to color correct and make my "Madrid" photo better. I thought I would share with you what I have been doing. Since this process is relatively new to me, I have had to go through various "studies" until I have settled on a final product. So here is my creative process...in order to see the differences, which are really subtle, you may want to look at this in LARGE format!

1) Original, untouched photo
2) I took out the lantern from the lower left hand corner and played with the shadow and highlight levels in Photoshop.
3) Played a bit more with the contrast levels and altered the perspective a bit more to make the photo a bit more compositionally balanced. This is the version that I submitted to the CommentMe group.
4) After some comments, I autocorrected the color since my photo had a blue cast to it (can be seen in 2 and 3).
5) Talked to Dr. Pat and started working with LAB. This is my first try. I was not completely satisfied, but notice that the blue cast is gone.
6) More work with LAB, unfortunatley, I decided I had gone BERSERK since there was too much undesirable texture in the red section of the building. TOO MUCH CONTRAST!!!

FINAL PRODUCT is the the BIG photo, which I have corrected to the best of my ability. Maybe after practice, I will be able to do better, but this is a nice first attempt. Since there was TOO much contrast in 5 and 6, I went back to the original, untouched photo and worked in LAB. Having done this...I believe this photo is far less pixelized and the original luminosity (from what I remember) is present.

Vintage Airplane Bomber Film: Eighth Air Force (1944)

A reign of destruction falls upon a German plane assembly plant in precise targeting. "Eighth Air Force - Target for Today," explains the high flying bomb runs of World War II and why they are necessary to win the war, even though at times they seem to accomplish little. It is not one bombing, or two, that will shift the power to allied forces but continued, decisive, strikes against German towns, outposts, and factories. Actual footage from the Eighth Air Force and graphic scenes of bombs reigning down victory add a sense of tragedy with honor.

Famine and Foreigners: Ethiopia since Live Aid

The Ethiopian famine of 25 years ago was the greatest humanitarian disaster of the late 20th century, killing more than 600,000 people before the world took notice. Peter Gill was the first journalist to reach the epicenter of the famine in 1984 and he returned at the time of Live Aid to research the definitive account of the disaster, A Year in the Death of Africa.

Now, in Famine and Foreigners, Gill returns to Ethiopia to piece together the real story of the last 25 years, drawing on interviews with leading Ethiopians and with an army of foreign aid officials. He conducted extensive interviews with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and the leading development economists, Joseph E. Stiglitz and Jeffrey Sachs. Most important of all, Gill has traveled throughout the country and interviewed scores of Ethiopia's dignified but still hungry farmers. What stands out in these pages are the graphic encounters with these Ethiopians--the supposed beneficiaries of western aid--who still struggle on the knife-edge of existence. What also emerges is the often tense relationship between official aid-givers and recipients--whether in the area of economic reform or the modern demands for "governance" and political change. Twenty five years on, we can say that we did feed the world. But did we change the face of poverty, did we close the gap between rich and poor, did we fulfill the promise of "development?"

A generation after Live Aid, this book questions whether any of world's big promises are being fulfilled. Have aid experts got it right? Are recipient countries allowed to pursue their own vision? Is democracy essential for banishing poverty? Now that the West faces its own economic challenges, it is time to ask whether the "development era" may be coming to an end.

First things first - yes the tax bill came and we wrote the cheque and mailed it off same day. Did you not get our e-mail about that before. Sorry. There is a way to pay it online or set up a direct debit which would make it easier for the future. I think it's a new option. Here are some shots of the big boy from this morning breakfast time. Hopefully your minutes will last to view them.We have not had any e-mails from the ship since the one you wrote on the first sea day before Malta. We wondered if the internet cafe lost the satellite connection or it was just too expensive.......we know the game from CCL!!!!Anyway, no matter...we were sure you were safe and well. We have also had a very busy week with doctors here (nothing emergent.....just routine) so Tania's schedule
has been a little thrown off and spur of the moment. We had our appointment at Sick Kids last week for Luca's ultra sound and then Dr Davy's partner (Pediatrician) called the same day to give us results (what service!!!). Anyway, he made an appointment with the Urologist which we went to at Sick Kids on Thursday afternoon this week. To give you the quick version of the story, Luca has to have a procedure done which we booked for Oct 6th. It's very simple. Basically, in his urethra just after his bladder there is a narrowing of the urethra wall by some extra flashy flap or loose "valve" which can cause the urine to not completely empty from the bladder. This in turn makes the bladder walls grow more muscle to be stronger to void the pee which can lead to a problem there later in life. The urologist showed us the pictures from the ultra sound on the computer and it explained it well. Anyway, thankfully, Dr Davy was suspicious or extra cautious when
Luca had tonsilitis and ordered this screening which showed up.So on Oct 6th, we take him in at 9am for a day surgery. They insert a scope through his urethra (he is under general anesthetic so he won't feel a thing) then the go beyond the flap, extend a little blade and slice it out. No invasive surgery, no stitches, no scars. We'll take him home as soon as he wakes. It sounds really scary but firstly, Sick Kids is the best hospital for kids and secondly, it is, apparently, a common ailment in newborns. Talking about it, Tania has come across many mothers who have been through it or know someone who has! Who would have thought? Also there is  anurse in our building who works at Sick Kids so I'm going to ask her about the anesthetic part - just because it's an "unknown" thing for us.In other news.....as you can see from the pics, Luca is a big boy now....he is still on antibiotics until the surgery. Next week is his 12 month
shots and check up. He's loving his new found ability to stand (with help) and take steps with his little shopping cart (did I send you a video?). He still gets down and crawls when he wants to get somewhere fast. To Tania's disdain, he has ALMOST worked out how to move the footstool to escape from the babyjail part of our living room when she puts it between the two armchairs. The weather is glorious. Cannot complain. I am biking to FoodShare four out of five days a week. Hoping it'll hold for two more weeks until Luca's birthday Party in the Park.Others are fine....we're going to A&Ks tonight so they can babysit Luca while we head out on a datenight. Tyler's party tomorrow so, naturally, we'll helpout with the set up etc. T is going to the gym 3 - 4 times a week and has moved her membership tp the GoodLife at Mt Pleasant & Davisville for the Winter so it's closer. The gym in the building here is very small
and has a bike, a treadmill and a weight machine...very poor set up. Tania is on the social committee here now and organized a rooftop patio BBQ/Potluck thsi week which was well attended and people commented on how really well she organized it. next stop....wine and cheese. She's also organizing a book club, a mother's group and something else I can't remember.Your condo is fine - we checked it yesterday and took Luca for a quick swim. Mail is piling up on your desk but mainly bills and statements, I think ! That'll be a full day's job when you return.Tania is using the access to a car to practice driving and is actually really good at it now. We had a trip out to a farm last week at Kitchener for my work so e all went for the day and she did exceptionally well on the highways. She's actually a really good driver and very, very safe. Sorry to hear that NCL didn't live up to the expectations but as a conselation you have 4
more glorious days in Spain! Don't worry about connecting until you are back in Athens. We can Skype a lot then and make up for it.OK - I will sign off now as your minutes are probably running out or you are going to dinner or something. Don't worry about us - we're all fine - all is well here - A&K and the kids are well. Tyler is in daycare already. K goes back to work very soon. And we're all excited about

AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS: The Crash of Comair Flight 5191

On August 27, 2006, Comair Flight 5191, a Bombardier CL-600-2B19, crashed during takeoff from the wrong runway of Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, Kentucky, killing 49 of the 50 people aboard. From the beginning everything went wrong. First the captain and first officer boarded the wrong airplane, only after starting the auxiliary power unit they found out they were in the wrong aircraft. Taxiing to the takeoff position the captain and first officer were so engaged in a private conversation that they did not realize they took the wrong runway. The air traffic controller did not notice anything.

The 2009 Economic and Product Market Databook for Boa Vista, Brazil

The 2009 Economic and Product Market Databook for Boa Vista, Brazil

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Brazil. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Brazil and the extent to which Boa Vista might be used as a point of distribution within Latin America. From an economic perspective, however, Boa Vista does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Boa Vista over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Boa Vista when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Boa Vista used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Boa Vista. Without Boa Vista, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Brazil, Latin America, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Latin America and Boa Vista.

This is the first church here in Boa Vista-RR. It is a composition disconcerting because I was caught by a sudden flight of birds or bats leaving the trees and returned.

For the past several months, air travel in Brazil has been plagued by numerous flight delays, cancellations, and work slow-downs by air traffic controllers. Some people have managed to adapt to the situation, such as this couple at the airport in Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil.

Dryden Flight Research Center: Webster's Image and Photographic History, 1949 to 2005

Dryden Flight Research Center: Webster's Image and Photographic History, 1949 to 2005

This book represents an image and photographic history dedicated to "Dryden Flight Research Center," whether used as a family or geographic name. Images cover the period from 1949 to 2005. It is a historical compilation from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on any image relating to the name "Dryden Flight Research Center," including alternative meanings and inflections which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (family name, geographic name, etc.) as well as use in modern culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, the military, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, and other physical sciences. This selection process results in many unexpected entries for a image collection dedicated to the name Dryden Flight Research Center, since editorial decisions to include or exclude images is purely a linguistic process. The dating of the images is either the year taken, the year published, or a numerical value found in the title or credit (e.g. the sorting by years may not be related to the years when the images were originally produced). Original image orientation is generally used. The images are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. Some images have not been cropped, to retain margin information, and/or to show original condition. Proceeds from this book are used to expand the content and coverage of Webster's Online Dictionary (www.websters-online-dictionary.org).

Blackbird

Blackbird

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night. . ." I was lucky enough to see NASA's two SR-71 Blackbirds while taking a tour of Dryden Flight Research Center, near Edwards Air Force Base, CA. The plane used to be used for high altitude reconnaissance, but it is now a bit obsolete. NASA still uses them for high altitude atmospheric research. It is very expensive to fly because it leaks fuel like a seive before takeoff, since there are gaps in it's fuselage. It is designed this way so that the plates of its fuselage will expand and "seal" the plane when it is heated due to travelling at high speeds. I think this plane still holds the world record for fastest (declassified) speed for an atmospheric flight.

Ceiling Unlimited Flight Test Centers Edwards Air Force Base and Wright Field

To develop and test new aircraft and weapons systems, is the mission of the U.S. Air Force's test centers. Featured on this DVD are two rare, historic films.
Ceiling Unlimited describes the feverish R&D efforts undertaken at Wright Field during WWII. Planes and pilots went higher, flew faster, and farther, thanks to research at Wright.
The story of Edwards Air Force Base, the famous desert proving ground of the X-planes, is recounted in Beyond the Horizon. The film, made in the early 1980's, traces the expansion of Edwards from a primitive bombing range, to the world's premiere flight test facility.
Finally, the DVD includes The XB-70 Story. This extremely rare film profiles the Mach 3.0 capable, Valkerie nuclear bomber. Following a disastrous 1966 mid-air collision involving one of two XB-70 prototypes, the program was curtailed and the film shelved, never to be seen again, until now!
Films are in black and white and color. Due to the rarity of these films, and their historic nature, sound and image quality can vary. These films have been digitally remastered.
Please note: this DVD is recorded in the DVD-R format and may not be compatible with first-generation DVD players. Check your player's instruction manual for more information.

Krakow
Wieza ratuszowa

Wieze odbudowano i podwyzszono o te czesc, gdzie dzisiaj miesci sie tarcza zegara. Prace, ukonczone w 1686 r. prowadzil slaski budowniczy Piotr Beber. Jednak juz w 1784 r. musiano nakryc wieze nowym helmem.
Otwory okienne ujete sa wimpergami, czyli trojkatnymi szczytami zdobionymi zabkami i sterczynami. Sciana polnocna, dawniej przylegajaca do ratusza jest gladka, ceglana. Znajduja sie w niej otwory, ktore dawniej komunikowaly wieze z ratuszem. Mury wiezy maja grubosc dwoch metrow, a sciana polnocna niemal trzech (2,80), gdyz w jej szerokosci mieszcza sie kamienne schodki prowadzace na wyzsze kondygnacje.
Wewnatrz, na parterze wiezy znajduje sie sala przekryta gotyckim krzyzowym sklepieniem, gdzie miescil sie dawniej skarbiec. W sali na pietrze, pelniacej dawniej funkcje kaplicy, zrekonstruowano gotyckie sklepienie, a z pierwotnego wyposazenia zachowaly sie wsporniki i rzezbiony fryz o motywie debowych lisci.
W czasie kazdej odnowy wiezy w galkach wienczacego ja helmu umieszczano pismo o aktualnych wydarzeniach i wykonanych pracach oraz owczesne monety i medale.

Town Hall Tower
in Krakow

For many centuries Krakow Town Hall adorned the Market Square west of the Sukiennice. It was a late Gothic building, two storeys high, with crow steps and a tall tower. The main entrance was from the east, through a flight of stairs guarded by recumbent lions. The Town Hall was dismantled in 1820, and the tower is all that remains from the ancient site of municipal government.
The tower was constructed in the last quarter of the 14th century; probably completed around 1383. In the 16th century, it was equipped with three bells, and a wooden watchman’s gallery on the outside. In 1524, a clock with painted figures was added, brought from Nuremberg. During the fire of 1680 the spire, the clock, and 1st floor ceilings were destroyed. The tower was reconstructed and raised, adding a section in which the present dial is placed. A Silesian builder, Piotr Beber, completed restoration works in 1686. However, as soon as 1784 the spire was once again replaced. After the demolition of the town hall, the tower fell into disrepair, and there were plans to dismantle it as well. It survived, and was renovated in 1913-1914, and 1925-1930; during the restoration phase in 1964-1969 the bays were added, as well as the stairs and the lions, a fountain, some stone benches, and window frames in the northern elevation.
Two lower floors were built of stone blocks, and the upper part, of brick; with stone blocks placed in the quoins. The tower is covered with stone lining on three sides, decorated with vertical bar tracery, with inset horizontal bands of rosettes in square frames. Windows are clasped within triangular gablets decorated with crockets and pinnacles. The northern wall, which used to adjoin the body of the town hall, is plain brick, with openings that once connected the two buildings. The walls of the tower are 2 metres thick, and the northern wall is even thicker at 2.8 metres as it incorporates a stone staircase leading to the upper floors.
Inside, there is a rectangular room on the ground floor, a former treasury, covered with Gothic cross vaults. Upstairs, in a former chapel with baroque ceilings, fragments of buttresses and a carved oak-leaf frieze have been preserved.
After each restoration, written accounts of issues current at the time, as well as coins and medals, were placed inside the orbs at the top of the tower. Today these memorabilia are more than merely municipal collectibles: they speak of the history of the town and its hall.

Kraków

Kraków

The Dominican Church (Kosciol Dominikanow Sw. Trojcy) was the site of the original wooden church of the Krakow burghers, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and erected in place of the former pagan temple. In 1222 the Bishop of Krakow, Iwo Odrowaz, at the instigation of his kinsman St. Hyacynth installed the Dominicans; their first base in Poland. The basilica with a nave and two aisles was erected in the 13th century - in its construction brick was used for the first time in Krakow - and rebuilt several times; the imposing stepped gable of the east front was added in 1462. There is a beautiful late 14th century stone portal with exceptional filiate and animal carving inside the neo-Gothic vestibule. The 1850 fire ravaged the interior and the vault of the nave. In the chancel is the bronze stele of the humanist scholar Filippo Buonaccorsi (Kallimach) designed by Stwosz, and a copy of the tombstone of Leszek Czarny ("the Black"), Duke of Krakow. The chapel of St.Hyacinth, 1614-18, (at the head of the flight of steps in the north isle) has stucco decoration and contains the tomb of St.Hyacinth by Fontana. The Kaplica Myszkowskich, 1603-14, (fifth chapel in the south aisle) makes striking use of black and white marbles; the busts of the family are in the dome. The next chapel contains a miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary; the crypt is the resting place of Teofilia Sobieska - mother of Jan Sobieski. The monastery cloisters with preserved fragments of walls are among the oldest in Krakow.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the "Man With No Name," this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of $200,000and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold, hard close-ups, exceptional camera work captures the beauty and cruelty of the barren landscape andthe hardened characters who stride unwaveringly through it. Forging a vibrant and yet detached style of action that had not been seen before, and has never been matched since, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shatters the western mold in true Clint Eastwood style.

Clint Eastwood (the Man with No Name) is good, Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes Sentenza) is bad, and Eli Wallach (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez) is ugly in the final chapter of Sergio Leone's trilogy of spaghetti westerns (the first two were A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More). In this sweeping film, the characters form treacherous alliances in a ruthless quest for Confederate gold. Leone is sometimes underrated as a director, but the excellent resolution on this digital video disc should enhance appreciation of his considerable photographic talent and gorgeous widescreen compositions. Ennio Morricone's jokey score is justifiably famous.

"February 23, 2009
Rebecca. I re-shot and re-copied a lot of these pictures ( sharper images) that you have seen before. This glider that I built in the winter of 1968. is absolutely one of the 1st Hang gliders built in the "modern-era".
I wrote this after you sent me the last Rupel story. Please send it to Dr. Gillum, he might appreciate it? I really liked his B-29 story.

Starlin, you wanted more storys. Should I continue this stuff? I got straih=ght D's in English, I can't write, but does it matter? Rebecca, Steve Starlin likes my stories-- sent this a month ago?

Rebecca, here is another early pilot.
I know some of you have seen these pictures, sorry. but this is the "rest of the story."

Tory, Jim..., do you remember this event? It was the winter of 1969, at the Oxford, Michigan gravel-pit.
I had seen a picture of a "Rogallo wing" in the EAA flying magazine, which inspired me to built 3 scale models with a scale-pilot made out of solder-wire-lead. I could bend the lead-pilot around, to get the craft in " trim". Amazingly the 4 foot scale glider flew quite well.
Next I went to the surplus store on Six Mile, and bought a bunch of 26 ft. long tubing, that [felt-strong] ? With Pop-rivets, 6-mil-?, plastic drop-cloth, double-faced tape, and an "Easy Rider" paint scheme tinted on the see-through plastic..., the first and second versions were built.
Off to the Oxford gravel-pit, north of Detroit---- hardly Kitty Hawk, but the highest hill I knew of------ I was going to fly? (First time failed, not enough "billow") This was pioneer stuff?
Next, after re- surfacing the 1st version, with more ''Billow,"I made many more attempts at "controlled-flight." But, with the lack of control, each flight became more terrifying than the last.
Pete Brock, who became a good friend, always called me, "a pioneer," as in 1969, there were only a few people experimenting with hand-made kites, most, as I now know, were made of Bamboo! Many of these very young, early pioneers were paralyzed or killed. Later in California, flying in my early 70's kites, I knew some of them. It was hard to explain to my wife, how someone you looked up-to, maybe the best pilot you knew---- was paralyzed, or dead. One good friend, Jack Schroeder, the "1st world champion," was paralyzed from waist-down, from his crash into the rocky cliffs at Point Fermin. In the next few years, as we flew "Point Fermin," Jack would occasionally be there, watching from his wheelchair. Next .., Peter Brock lost his 11 year old wonderful son Hall. Hall broke his neck, while attempting a "360 turn" while flying at Telluride. It was devastating. Hall, whom I really liked being around, once told me.., that he could see thermals? I still don't know if this amazing young man, was kidding me? Pete never recovered--- was never the same as long as I was around him. Imagine, Pete went home, and had to tell his wife---that Hall was dead? Shortly after, they were divorced.
"360 degree turns" were a very big deal back then. "If you thought you could do only one "360 turn".., don't do any." "If you thought you could do two turns, only do one!" I hit the hill in a "360" attempt only once--- I was lucky, but it was a real hit!! Wind speed 15, kite speed 15.., down wind into the hill equals 30 mph. Down wind landings? Same thing, you can't run at 30 mph.
Another time most of my Dragonfly was cut and ripped to pieces in a downwind landing? Not knowing the wind had changed 180 degrees at the landing site, and with no possibility of changing direction, landed at about 25-30 mph! This is normally really bad, but this time I landed on a barbwire fence, that was going the same direction, sawing off my left wing, the barbwire, luckily not touching me! Back to the Brock factory where everyone pitched-in, and by mid night I had a new kite. Good friends.
In 1974 I was one of the really old guys, being 35, most pilots being somewhere around 20. This was a new kind of flying, there was much to learn, there were no schools at this time, we---
a small handful of very brave youngsters, were truly pioneering a new way to fly. With a 50 pound pile of tubing, sailcloth, wire and dozen wing-nuts, we were jumping off cliffs! Looking back on it at this time, I wonder at the amazing self confidence we had in ourselves. Bonded by a mutual respect for each other, while waiting for the correct wind, we would stand on the flying si

UNHCR News Story: Ilyushin flight to start UNHCR aid airlift to Uzbekistan on Wednesday

Emergency supplies are loaded at UNHCR's central emergency stockpile in Dubai ahead of being airlifted to Uzbekistan.
UNHCR / 15 June 2010

GENEVA, June 15 (UNHCR) – An Ilyushin-76 cargo plane, carrying 40 tonnes of UNHCR relief supplies for refugees fleeing violence in southern Kyrgyzstan, is scheduled to take off from Dubai on Wednesday for Andijan in Uzbekistan.

A further five Ilyushin flights are planned as UNHCR's aid operation gets under way. The Uzbek authorities on Monday accepted a UN refugee agency offer to help them deal with urgent needs of the tens of thousands of displaced civilians from across the border. "UNHCR appreciates Uzbekistan's decision to receive and assist these desperate people," spokesman Andrej Mahecic told journalists in Geneva on Tuesday.

The first UNHCR-chartered flight will be loaded with 800 lightweight tents to meet the rapidly growing shelter needs of the more than 75,000 refugees whom the government says has arrived in Uzbekistan since last Friday. An estimated 200,000 people have been displaced within the country.

The subsequent five flights will be loaded with blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen sets and plastic sheeting for emergency shelters. "In total, we plan to deliver some 240 tonnes of humanitarian assistance from our central emergency stockpile in Dubai. Upon arrival in Uzbekistan the supplies will be loaded onto trucks and taken immediately to various sites hosting refugees in close coordination with the government," Mahecic explained.

Part of the UNHCR emergency team is travelling today in advance of these flights. The team includes field officers as well as experts on operations, site planning and logistics. The refugee agency is also preparing a separate airlift and deployment of an emergency team to Kyrgyzstan.

UNHCR is alarmed by the rapid escalation of violence since last Thursday in southern Kyrgyzstan which has left scores of people dead. The situation in the towns of Osh and Jalalabad remains difficult with sporadic fighting and attacks on civilians, including women and children, continuing on Monday.

"We fear that unless peace and order is restored swiftly, more people could be displaced as they flee to the countryside or try to cross the border to Uzbekistan," UNHCR's Mahecic said, adding that the refugee agency, as part of the UN country team in Kyrgyzstan, urged a halt to the violence.

The UN refugee agency is also concerned that the poor security situation in Osh, Jalalabad and other areas is impeding needs assessment missions as well as aid deliveries. UNHCR has been coordinating the humanitarian response within the UN country team and is stepping up humanitarian assistance operations for displaced people. As part of the inter-agency response, UNHCR's operational focus will be on shelter and protection needs of the internally displaced.

"Urgent needs include food, medicine and shelter and we need better security to ensure the safety of humanitarian staff and goods. Some food and health aid is being delivered already, but not enough aid is getting through. There are reports that displaced people near the border may be short of water and that those made homeless by violence may be without shelter," Mahecic said.

Kyrgyzstan has requested substantive international support to address the humanitarian crisis that is evolving in its southern regions.

Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India

Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India

Britain's precipitous and ill-planned disengagement from India in 1947--condemned as a "shameful flight" by Winston Churchill--had a truly catastrophic effect on South Asia, leaving hundreds of thousands of people dead in its wake and creating a legacy of chaos, hatred, and war that has lasted over half a century.
Ranging from the fall of Singapore in 1942 to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, Shameful Flight provides a vivid behind-the-scenes look at Britain's decision to divest itself from the crown jewel of its empire. Stanley Wolpert, a leading authority on Indian history, paints memorable portraits of all the key participants, including Gandhi, Churchill, Attlee, Nehru, and Jinnah, with special focus on British viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Wolpert places the blame for the catastrophe largely on Mountbatten, the flamboyant cousin of the king, who rushed the process of nationhood along at an absurd pace. The viceroy's worst blunder was the impetuous drawing of new border lines through the middle of Punjab and Bengal. Virtually everyone involved advised Mountbatten that to partition those provinces was a calamitous mistake that would unleash uncontrollable violence. Indeed, as Wolpert shows, civil unrest among Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs escalated as Independence Day approached, and when the new boundary lines were announced, arson, murder, and mayhem erupted. Partition uprooted over ten million people, 500,000 to a million of whom died in the ensuing inferno.
Here then is the dramatic story of a truly pivotal moment in the history of India, Pakistan, and Britain, an event that ignited fires of continuing political unrest that still burn in South Asia.

Virgin Trip to America – Went with my loved ones (family n wife) on a package tour (a 40 ppl strong group) over a period of 12 days to California; it is the third-largest state in the United States in size, after Alaska and Texas. It’s a tormenting long distance flight of 17 hrs to and 21 hrs back from LA (our 1st stop at Tom Bradely international airport) but it’s all worth it. Overalll it’s a fantastic experience for all of us; felt the warmth hospitability and amicability of the locals there, great culture, accompanied by breathtaking landscapes along the way and not forgetting the crazy shopping spree we had in all 3 factory outlets that our tour guide brought us to. lol. We stopped by Los Angeles, Nevada, Fresno, San Francisco, a few cities to name.. Our itinerary covered famous landmarks like Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Fisherman Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Grand Canyon, Hollywood walk of fame and lots more, not to mentioned rides and time spent at Disney land, California Adventure Park and Universal Studios were truly enjoyable. Weather was fine and relatively cool during our period of visit.

It’s without doubt a lovely country and I relish the opportunity to head back there again.

Estimating the magnitude of capital flight due to abnormal pricing in international trade: The Russia-USA case [An article from: Accounting Forum]

This digital document is a journal article from Accounting Forum, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Governmental and international lending agencies, as well as private sector firms, who engage in international trade, have long been concerned with detecting and determining the magnitude of abnormal pricing in international trade. To detect such abnormal pricings, we present a framework analyzing millions of import/export transactions between the U.S. and Russia. The objectives of this study are to estimate the economic impact of over-invoiced/under-invoiced Russian imports/exports from/to the U.S. and to determine if capital movement/capital flight through trade is due to money laundering, tax evasion or some sort of portfolio consideration. Our results lead us to conclude that capital movement through trade in this case can be attributed to either money laundering and/or tax evasion.

Flew on Singapore Airline's giant A380 from Heathrow to Singapore.

My thoughts:

- The cabin, as reported, is quite roomy. There is plenty of headroom, and the main deck has 3-4-3 seating (same as the Boeing 747) (I heard it's 2-4-2 upstairs), with a small gap between the end seats and wall / windows. The cabin is fairly comfortable, however my seatbelt was twisted (as they often are in road vehicles, but never on a plane!), and the seat just didn't fit me; I found it difficult to assume a comfortable position (others don't seem to have this problem :S).

- We ran into a turbulence a few hours into the flight. I saw something unique - the internal walls and bulkheads were moving independently of the outside walls (never seen this before!) I'm not sure how the plane was designed to do this. Maybe Tayo can shed some light on it ;) (I enjoyed the turbulence though, it takes the monotony out of the flight)

- It is a fat and ugly plane, nothing like the graceful 747 (which, by the way, is 40 years old now).

- I'm sure airlines love it, because a large plane has lower operating costs than two small ones for a given capacity. But big isn't always better. The size of the plane means longer queues when entering the gate and boarding the plane. More stewards and stewardesses needed to serve food and drinks. Longer queues for toilets (time your visits strategically to avoid this problem). Shall I go on? I'll take the smaller 777 any time. This is primarily why I'm so interested in the new 787, because it's a smaller but still next-generation design. This is a classic point-to-point vs hub and spoke example, the A380 is designed to fly between large cities (as smaller airports cannot accommodate its size) but the 787 works best for small to medium sized ones. A move towards the point-to-point concept should mean eliminating transits at places like Dubai and Singapore but without enough passenger demand it will not happen any time soon. I can't wait to fly on the 787 when it enters service later this year.

A Low Cost Airline?

A Low Cost Airline?

Once onboard, I occupied a window seat on Row 2. It's free seating on the airline and as I was fast, I got a seat as close to the exit as possible. I took a photo of the other Tiger Airways planes parked on the tarmac and was wondering why they had so many planes that were not utilised. Low cost airlines are supposed to have higher aircraft utilisation compared to other legacy carriers and from the list of flight departures I saw, some of the planes would not be flown at least for the next four hours.

Tracking Time (April Woo Suspense Novels)

Tracking Time (April Woo Suspense Novels)

It's a foggy early September evening when Dr. Maslow Atkins, a psychoanalytic candidate and student, is assaulted and disappears in Central Park. The only people who know what happened to him are Pee Wee, an inebriated homeless man hoping for a handout; Brandy and David, two wealthy private school kids who roam the Internet and Central Park; and Allegra, Maslow's disturbed young patient who's obsessed with him.
Investigating outside her jurisdiction of Midtown North and without authority in the sacred confines of the Central Park Precinct, NYPD Detective Sergeant April Woo prompts a media frenzy and the rage of the whole department with a K-9 search that yields nothing. Nothing, that is, except the keen interest of Brandy and David, who think they can tease the cops, bluff the tracking dog, and get away with murder.
April's gut instinct still tells her that Maslow is alive, and she won't stop until she finds him. Working against the clock and demons of her own, she and psychoanalyst Dr. Jason Frank become embroiled in a surprising and lethal tangle of family secrets and adolescent rage. Nobody escapes unscathed, for no family's story is as innocent as it seems.

The appealing Chinese American NYPD detective April Woo is back in this popular series. Psychiatrist Jason Frank has asked for her help in finding Maslow Atkins, a training analyst who's gone missing after a therapy session with his patient Allegra Caldera, a highly disturbed young woman. Maslow was last seen setting off for an evening run through Central Park, so April calls in a canine tracking unit. The dog's discovery of the body of a homeless man who was the only known witness to Maslow's abduction causes a rift between April and her boyfriend Mike Sanchez, the homicide cop who abruptly pulls rank to take over the case. But April stays on Maslow's trail anyway, and soon finds that although Allegra seems to be the logical suspect, two out-of-control teenagers from affluent families may also be involved in the kidnapping and murder. When Allegra turns out to be connected to Maslow in ways neither he nor Jason Frank suspected, the plot takes another fascinating turn.
What makes author Leslie Glass's police procedural series unique (Stealing Time, Judging Time, Loving Time) is the cross-cultural relationship between April and Sanchez, a romance doomed to failure, according to Skinny Dragon, April's endlessly fascinating mother. It took several books in the Time series for April to fall into Mike's well-muscled arms, and if Skinny Dragon has her way, there'll be plenty more before she dances at their wedding. --Jane Adams

Slender Baskettail - Epitheca costalis

Update: There have been a number of questions that have come up as a result of this series so I'll try to answer them here.

How do you get these? - Ummm... I sit in the sun for hours being harassed by bugs and getting all sweaty. The whole point to this sitting time is to let things settle down and watch what the bugs are doing. The males of some species will fly around certain bits of airspace patrolling for food, females, and intruding males. When they get into this mode, they will often adopt a location to hover and inspect their domain and then slowly work a grid pattern through it from that starting point. If you sit and become part of the environment at the right distance, you will be able to figure out their pattern and anticipate where to level your gaze. Then, it's just a matter of being patient and waiting for them to be where they should be.

Key to this strategy is using manual focus 'cuz these bugs will set an AF system into spasms trying to lock onto them. AF also locks the shutter release until it is satisfied that it has locked on correctly. With manual focus you'll get a lot of crappy pics but you'll also get quite a few that are good. Also, if you have a stabilizer system, use the mode that accounts for panning. On Canon lenses, this is mode 2. This will allow you to track the bugs better when the are cruising slowly. Finally, never waste your time trying to photograph a bug that's zooming by - it just eats up card space with bad images and pictures of the background with no bug in it.

Please tell me they were hovering and not patrolling. - Sorry, the image above and the middle one in the comments section were moving. But, I will admit, at they were patrolling a small area at very low speed. I had set up my focus and watched that particular bug pass through a spot at least a hundred times at about walking speed so I would wait for him to pass through and then I would fire off 15 snaps without adjusting focus hoping that I would get him in frame and sharp on at least one of them. That worked at an acceptable level producing 2 good images out of the 60 I took that way. To be sure, though, this only worked with this species because they stayed in a small area and were very deliberate and slow with their movements.

How many memory cards did you fill? - Actually, I only took about 175 images to produce these pictures. That's about 2/3 of an 8Gig card. I attribute this mostly to the fact that I was getting very warm sitting in the direct sun and gnats were getting stuck to my skin and making me really uncomfortable. Otherwise, I would've filled two cards just on these guys. I really thought that I would get home and end up with only one usable image but I actually got these and few more that I didn't post. I think that having practiced so much and failed with my XTi and 300mm made it much easier with to do with the resolution and features afforded by my 7D. Ultimately, I think it's just a matter deciding that you want something bad enough to be willing to burn the amount of time it takes to get it. Oh yeah, and a lot of luck as well.

Final Note - Getting dragonflies in general is very similar to the process one must adopt to fishing. The real work is in understanding your target and observing its behavior in a specific situation. Some like to perch while others prefer to fly. Some have a favorite perch or patch or airspace while others roam. They all behave differently when they have their minds on procreating and that can produce excellent opportunities. The snap of the shutter is the last part of this process, albeit the reason that you're watching these bugs to begin with, and needs to be what happens after the observation is complete.

We thought we were due a holiday and, having never been to the Algarve, me and Elena decided that a birthday weekend in Portugal for ?10 per person each way was too good a bargain to pass up. Return flights of THREE AND A HALF HOURS for both of us for ?40! Who would say no!

WE arrived in Faro at about noon on Saturday, a time that we Brits are used to seeing high streets buzzing with shoppers and diners and the place was like a Ghost town. After getting off the bus in the centre of town we were pretty convinced we'd alighted a few stops too early as there was no life to be seen at all.

They obviously do things differently in Portugal.

After a while of looking for people we decided to make our second wall of the trip and here it is.

By the end of the trip we came home totally relaxed. If you're thinking of a trip to the south of Portugal in the off season, it's cheap but there really is very little to do, so make sure you bring some postcards to make REAL walls like what we done!

Thanks to Cross Ryu, Dumpsterdiver and the others who accompanied us there in spirit!

Hummingbird Handheld sm

Hummingbird Handheld sm

Description

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is 7–9 cm long with an 8–11 cm wingspan, and weighs about 3 g. Adults are metallic green above and greyish white below, with near-black wings. Their bill is long, straight and very slender.

The species is dimorphic.[2] The adult male, shown in the photo, has a ruby red throat patch which may appear black in some lighting, and a dark forked tail. The female has a dark rounded tail with white tips and generally no throat patch, though she may sometimes have a light or whitish throat patch. The male is smaller than the female, and has a slightly shorter beak. A molt of feathers occurs once a year, and begins during the autumn migration.
[edit] Habitat and range
Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Gadsden Co., Florida.

The breeding habitat is throughout most of eastern North America and the Canadian prairies, in deciduous and pine forests and forest edges, orchards, and gardens. The female builds a nest in a protected location in a shrub or a tree.

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is migratory, spending most of the winter in southern Mexico, Central America as far south as South America, and the West Indies. It breeds throughout the eastern United States, east of the 100th meridian, and in southern Canada in eastern and mixed deciduous forest.[3]
[edit] Behavior

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are solitary. Adults of this species typically only come into contact for the purpose of mating, and both males and females of any age aggressively defend feeding locations within their territory. The aggressiveness becomes most pronounced in late summer to early fall as they fatten up for migration. This is important because, as part of their migration, they must fly across the Gulf of Mexico - a feat which long confounded scientists, as a 500-mile, non-stop flight over water would seemingly require a caloric energy that far exceeds an adult hummingbird's body weight of 3 grams. However, researchers discovered the tiny birds can nearly double their body mass in preparation for their Gulf crossing. The additional mass, stored as fat, provides enough energy for the birds to achieve this amazing flight.

They feed frequently while active during the day and when temperatures drop, particularly on cold nights, they may conserve energy by entering hypothermic torpor.

Due to their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals.
[edit] Flight

Hummingbirds have many skeletal and flight muscle adaptations which allow the bird great agility in flight. Muscles make up 25-30% of their body weight, and they have long, blade-like wings that, unlike the wings of other birds, connect to the body only from the shoulder joint. This adaptation allows the wing to rotate almost 180°, enabling the bird to fly not only forward but fly backwards, and to hover in front of flowers as it feeds on nectar and insects.

During hovering, ruby-throated hummingbird wings beat 55 times per second, 61 times per second when moving backwards, and up to 75 times per second when moving forward.[citation needed]
[edit] Diet
Female feeding on nectar from scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma)

Nectar from flowers and flowering trees, as well as small insects and spiders, are its main food. Small arthropods are a more important part of adult hummingbirds' diet than has generally been recognized.[4] Their diet may also occasionally include tree sap taken from sapsucker wells. Hummingbirds show a slight preference for red, tubular flowers as a nectar source. The birds feed from flowers using a long extendendable tongue, and catch insects on the wing or glean them from flowers, leaves, bark, and even from spider's webs.

Young birds are fed insects for protein since nectar is an insufficient source of protein for the growing birds.[5]
[edit] Reproduction
Male Ruby-Throated hummingbird guarding his territory from the top of a tomato stake. He will chase off any other hummingbirds that try to feed in "his" area.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are thought to be polygynous. Polyandry and polygynandry may also occur. They do not form breeding pairs, and females provide all parental care.[6]

Males arrive at the breeding area in the spring, and establish a territory before the females arrive. When the females return, males court females that enter their territory by performing courtship displays. They perform a “dive display” rising 8 – 10 feet above and 5 – 6 feet to each side of the female. If the female perches, the male begins flying in very rapid horizontal arcs less than 0.5 m in front of her. The male's wings may beat up to 200 times per second during these displays (the normal speed is 55-75 beats per second).

If the female is receptive to the male, she may give a call and assume a solicitous posture with her tail feathers cocked and her wings drooped. Preceding copulation, male and female face each other, alternately ascend about 10 feet and descend, eventually dropping to the ground and copulating.[7]

Spread your wings and fly (male - forked tail)

Spread your wings and fly (male - forked tail)

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), is a small hummingbird. It is the only species of hummingbird that regularly nests east of the Mississippi River in North America.

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is 7–9 cm long with an 8–11 cm wingspan, and weighs about 3 g. Adults are metallic green above and greyish white below, with near-black wings. Their bill is long, straight and very slender.

It breeds throughout the eastern United States, east of the 100th meridian, and in southern Canada in eastern and mixed deciduous forest.

Female feeding on nectar from scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma)Nectar from flowers and flowering trees, as well as small insects and spiders, are its main food.

Young birds are fed insects for protein since nectar is an insufficient source of protein for the growing birds.

Male Ruby-Throated hummingbird guarding his territory from the top of a tomato stake. He will chase off any other hummingbirds that try to feed in "his" area.Ruby-throated hummingbirds are thought to be polygynous. Polyandry and polygynandry may also occur. They do not form breeding pairs, and females provide all parental care.

Preceding copulation, male and female face each other, alternately ascend about 10 feet and descend, eventually dropping to the ground and copulating.

Secret War Rivals

Secret War Rivals

Major Giacomo “Vic” Victore was given command over the first and only squadron of seventeen P-55 Pit Vipers built and flown during WWII. Entering service in early 1945, the P-55’s high efficiency turboprops (rather than turbojets, which early German jet fighters utilized) allowed for longer flight times and high sustained speeds needed to battle the German jet fighters. It is a common misconception of the war that the German jets arrived too late on the scene to cause the Allies any problems- in truth, it was the Pit Vipers chasing the gas-guzzling German jets back to their bases that signified the doom for the Luftwaffe. In just a few short months over the European skies, Major Vic’s Vipers, as they would come to be known, cut a swath through the remains of the German Air Forces.

The only threat to the P-55 was the Horton Ho 409 Blutsauger (Vampire Bat), a sneaky German jet fighter equipped with RADAR and loads of fuel. Blutsaugers would circle hidden in the clouds waiting for Vipers chasing bait fighters and attack when vulnerable. Blutsaugers were equipped with newer, more efficient turbofan engines, and when laden with fuel this enabled the 409’s to outlast the P-55. Viper pilots were prone to calling them “flying fuel tanks” for their ability to stay airborne for such long periods.

The P-55 utilized several ahead-of-its-time features incorporated after the Allies were able to emancipate many of Europe’s most brilliant minds. In addition to the turboprop, which provided the speed of a jet with the relative efficiency of a conventional prop system, the P-55 used a swept forward wing design to cut through the sky. Flaps and air brakes compensated for the smaller surface area on the backs of the wings.

Seen here is Capt. Elias J. Gold II’s P-55A, dubbed “Plane Jane.” Capt. Gold was the Viper Ace, marking 22 official kills as well as wreaking havoc on tanks, infantry, and support units across Europe. Like the other Vipers built, “Plane Jane” did not survive the war. Capt. Gold was shot down deep inside German airspace by a Blutsauger wolfpack days before Germany surrendered.

The Horton Ho 409(b) Blutsauger (Vampire Bat) was the rarest aircraft in WWII to be utilized as a fighter and score a confirmed kill. Only six 409b’s were assembled with the turbofans installed before the German factory was leveled by an Allied bomb, destroying the remaining twenty-five 409a’s awaiting conversion. In addition to being rare, the Blutsauger is one of the more interesting German fighters to see combat during the War.

The 409 was begun as essentially identical in purpose to the American P-61 Black Widow, utilizing RADAR in its infancy to attack unsuspecting Allied planes at night. However, its design was clearly unique. A RADAR operator sat forward and below a pilot, while a gunner led a solitary lifestyle in the rear turret. A large portion of the plane’s body stored fuel, which allowed the Blutsaugers to hide out in the clouds for hours awaiting their RADAR screens to pick up unsuspecting enemy craft. On more than one occasion, the Luftwaffe used bait planes to lure Allied wings into a Blutsauger’s kill zone.
409a’s were able enough, but the emergence of the P-55 Pit Viper saw the need for a faster, more efficient response. Six 409b’s were converted from prop engines to the just-introduced turbofans with astonishing results. Using their bait technique coupled with the wolfpack, a favored German U-boat tactic, the 409’s quickly decimated the small P-55 squadron. Hauptmann Kristoff Schultz, flying in a 409b he called “Death Comes Calling,” shot down four P-55’s in the last month Germany of fighting, including the famed “Plane Jane” piloted by Capt. E.J. Gold. Seen above is Hauptmann Schultz’s younger brother Oberleutnant Erich Schultz’s ride, “Shadow of Death.”

This Is Where I Leave You: A Novel

"Often sidesplitting, mostly heartbreaking...[Tropper is] a more sincere, insightful version of Nick Hornby, that other master of male psyche." --USA Today

The death of Judd Foxman's father marks the first time that the entire Foxman clan has congregated in years. There is, however, one conspicuous absence: Judd's wife, Jen, whose affair with his radio- shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public. Simultaneously mourning the demise of his father and his marriage, Judd joins his dysfunctional family as they reluctantly sit shiva-and spend seven days and nights under the same roof. The week quickly spins out of control as longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed and old passions are reawakened. Then Jen delivers the clincher: she's pregnant.

This Is Where I Leave You is Jonathan Tropper's most accomplished work to date, and a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind-whether we like it or not.

Amazon Best of the Month, August 2009: Jonathan Tropper writes compulsively readable, laugh-out-loud funny novels, and his fifth book, This Is Where I Leave You is his best yet. Judd Foxman is oscillating between a sea of self-pity and a "snake pit of fury and resentment" in the aftermath of the explosion of his marriage, which ended "the way these things do: with paramedics and cheesecake." Foxman is jobless (after finding his wife in bed with his boss) and renting out the basement of a "crappy house" when he is called home to sit shiva for his father--who, incidentally, was an atheist. This of course means seven days in his parent's house with his exquisitely dysfunctional family, including his mom, a sexy, "I've-still-got-it" shrink fond of making horrifying TMI statements; his older sister, Wendy, and her distracted hubby and three kids; his snarky older brother, Paul, and his wife; and his youngest brother, Phillip, the "Paul McCartney of our family: better-looking than the rest of us, always facing a different direction in pictures, and occasionally rumored to be dead." Tropper is wickedly funny, a master of the cutting one-liner that makes you both cringe and crack up. But what elevates his novels and makes him a truly splendid writer is his ability to create fantastically flawed, real characters who stay with you long after the book is over. Simultaneously hilarious and hopeful, This Is Where I Leave You is as much about a family's reckoning as it is about one man's attempt to get it together. The affectionate, warts-and-all portrayal of the Foxmans will have fans wishing for a sequel (and clamoring for all things Tropper). --Daphne Durham
