Including this plane only 3 remaining of the 250 that were ever built can fly. This one had a one way ticket from the bone yard. (I have since read that maybe up to 9 can fly. That's still not many. So I guess the number is now 2 to 9ish).

Juanito (Johnny) age 3 months was rescued from the sidewalk in Lima, Peru one month ago. He was emaciated and starving, eating from the garbage dump. He was sleeping in a pile of trash when workers set the trash on fire to burn it, he was badly burned. Ms Paquita Canales of Lima, who spends almost every waking hour caring for homeless animals, found Johnny and took him home. She took him to the vet and has nursed him back to health over the last month. She posted his story on Facebook, where I read it on July 24 and immediately fell in love with Johnny (Juanito.) Good friends on Facebook helped Ms Paquita pay for his medical expenses and food. My husband and I sold several household items we no longer needed, in order to raise the money for Juanito's airfare to travel here to the states. I traveled to New York on Aug. 16 where I met his arriving flight at JFK airport at 8:am. We arrived back in Ohio around 11:pm, both of us totally exhausted. Johnny (Juanito) has settled in and is doing great! He loves to play fetch with his tennis ball and sleeps with it in his air travel carrier. He has lots of shirts, toys, good food, 2 brothers (Chowder & Boo-boo (cats) a big yard and lots of love!! We want to thank Ms Paquita for her tirless work, late into the night , going into the streets to help these homeless and starving friends of man. She is Jaunito's guardian angel sent from above, of that I'm certain!

Pet my tummy please

Pet my tummy please

On of our new rabbits in 'trance' as some say. Putting them on their back to be quiet and still is something we're teaching them. It's sooo much easier (and adorable to see) to cut their nails, when those are too long.

Some rabbits don't have a problem laying on their back. Others are a real problem. Don't break their fragile spines! If it really doesn't want to lay on its back, than let it be. Try again later. Begin young. And do not forget to pet their tummy :) give them a small reward afterwards for being so good.

Alloy Steel Socket Cap Screw, Flat Head, Hex Socket Drive, #8-32, 1/2" Length (Pack of 50)

Alloy Steel Socket Cap Screw, Flat Head, Hex Socket Drive, #8-32, 1/2

Socket Cap Screws are reliable and durable and are used in many applications. They are available in a variety of head styles and materials.

Alloy Steel is steel that has been alloyed with other materials to improve overall physical properties. Steels are designated by a 4 number SAE Steel grade. The first two digits indicate the primary materials used to form the steel. The last 2 digits identify the percentage of carbon for the alloy (in hundredths). Tensile strength ranges for the alloys typically used in these fasteners range from 170,000 to 180,000 psi (pounds per square inch), making these amongst the strongest of materials.

Flat head fasteners are designed to fit flush to the surface when used with countersunk holes. Length is measured from the top of the head. Hex socket drive systems are driven by hex wrenches or power tools with hexagonal bits.

A threaded fastener's size name includes information about the major external diameter, followed by the threads per inch, which indicates if it is coarse or fine. Coarse threads are better when working with brittle materials; they are sturdier and are easier to thread and unthread compared to fine. Coarse threading also allows for thicker coatings and platings.

International Cricket Council (ICC) Member Nations

International Cricket Council (ICC) Member Nations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the international governing body of cricket. It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from England, Australia and South Africa, renamed the International Cricket Conference in 1965, and took up its current name in 1989.

The ICC has 104 members: 10 Full Members that play official Test matches, 34 Associate Members, and 60 Affiliate Members. The ICC is responsible for the organization and governance of cricket's major international tournaments, most notably the Cricket World Cup. It also appoints the umpires and referees that officiate at all sanctioned Test matches, One Day International and Twenty20 Internationals. It promulgates the ICC Code of Conduct, which sets professional standards of discipline for international crickets[1], and also co-ordinates action against corruption and match-fixing through its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).

The acting ICC President is Ray Mali following the death of Percy Sonn on May 27, 2007, after complications from recent surgery. The current CEO is Malcolm Speed. It was announced on June 27, 2007, that David Morgan the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, would fill the role of ICC President from 2008, until 2010, when he will be replaced by Sharad Pawar, the current president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

History

On June 15, 1909 representatives from England, Australia and South Africa met at Lord's and founded the Imperial Cricket Conference. Membership was confined to the governing bodies of cricket within the British Empire where Test cricket was played. India, New Zealand and West Indies were elected as Full Members in 1926, doubling the number of Test-playing nations to six. After the formation of Pakistan in 1947, it was given Test status in 1953, becoming the seventh Test-playing nation. South Africa resigned from the ICC in 1961 due to apartheid.

In 1965, the Imperial Cricket Conference was renamed the International Cricket Conference and new rules adopted to permit the election of countries from outside the Commonwealth. This led to the expansion of the Conference, with the admission of Associate Members. Associates were each entitled to one vote, while the Foundation and Full Members were entitled to two votes on ICC resolutions. Foundation Members retained a right of veto.

Sri Lanka was admitted as a Full Member in 1981, returning the number of Test-playing nations to seven. In 1989, new rules were adopted and International Cricket Conference changed its name to the current name, the International Cricket Council. South Africa was re-elected as a Full Member of the ICC in 1991, after the end of apartheid; this was followed in 1992 by the admission of Zimbabwe as the ninth Test-playing nation. Bangladesh was admitted as the tenth Test-playing nation in 2000.

Location

The ICC's offices in Dubai. From its formation the ICC had Lord's Cricket Ground as its home with offices in the "clock tower" building at the nursery end of the ground. However as the commercial element of the Council's operations became prominent the ICC sought ways to avoid tax liability on commercial income. This led, in 2001, to the establishment of an office in Monaco to which all of the commercial staff relocated. This move successfully removed the Council's tax liability however there was a disadvantage in that the Council's cricket administrators, who remained at Lord's, were separated from their commercial colleagues who had moved to Monaco. The council decided to seek ways of bringing all of their staff together in one office whilst protecting their commercial income from tax.

The option of staying at Lord's was investigated and a request was made, through Sport England, to the British Government to allow the ICC to have all its personnel (including those working on commercial matters) in London - but be given special exemption from paying UK corporation tax on its commercial income. The British Government was unwilling to create a precedent and would not agree to this request. As a consequence the ICC examined other locations and eventually settled on the emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. In August 2005 the ICC moved its offices to Dubai, and subsequently closed its offices at Lord's and Monaco. The move to Dubai was made after an 11-1 vote by the ICC's Executive Board in favour.

Whilst the principal driver of the ICC's move to Dubai was the wish to bring its main employees together in one tax efficient location, a secondary reason was the wish to move offices closer to the increasingly important new centres of cricketing power in South Asia. Lord's had been a logical venue when the ICC had been administered by the MCC (a situation that lasted until 1993). But the growing power of India, Pakistan and to a lesser extent Sri Lanka, in world cricket had made the continued control of international cricket by a British private members club (the

To cut a long story short, road works and traffic jams in the North of Switzerland conspired to make us miss our flight back home from Germany. Hence, we had to spend an extra night of holiday in the small German town of Friedrichshafen, near the airport.

Luckily for us, there was an Internet cafe across the street from our hotel from where we were able to book another cheap flight for the next day with Ryanair. ;-)

A brand new baby was born yesterday,
Just in time
Papa cried, baby cried
Said, your tears are like mine
I heard some words
from a friend on the phone,
didn't sound so good
The doctor gave him two weeks to live
I'd give him more if I could
You know that I would now
If only I could
You know that I would now
If only I could
Down the middle drops one more
grain of sand
They say that
new life makes losing life easier to understand
Words are kind
they help ease the mind
I miss my old friend
And though you gotta go

One comes in

the D90 is a good camera in real life , much better deal than the D300s not as good as the D700 but it is more practical and I believe it is the best bargain APS-C body ever.

the D300 people(I used to be a D300 user too)always bring up the AF difference and a bit better build quality whenever D90vs D300 issue comes up , though to be honest , there is not much differnce in real life AF performance of these 2 bodies and build quality is not that much important since these bodies are meant to be replaced every year or 2 since they are DX.

so, unless we go up to at least the D700 level , we dont get any significant perfomance difference , seriously DX means temporal or light weight kit , so better not spend over 1k on a DX body. now, the D90 is priced around 650USD, the D300s is about 1350USD, then who waste this much more money on the same sensored body with a bit better build and AF?

the D90 AF is not at all shitty , in real life if a D90 can not shoot it because of its AF , then a D300s also can not.

Plus, in 14bit mode , the D300s is slooooooooow as hell , seriously slow , the D90 at least shoot 4.5f/s , so what is the point of advertised faster f/s of the D300s?

Also, the 7D is a big waste for the same reasons, if any one can spend that much on a body and carry a body as big as the 7D then , he should get a 5D2 or D700.

there is no cheaper substitute or alternative to a full frame.

so, I think if any one talk about better build or ergonomics and recomcommend a D300s like a body over something like a D90, then just ignore him or her cause cameras will be replaced every year or so , it is like a computer , you replace it every year or 2 , so why care about build quality?

I think not many people using their current D-SLRs any longer than their shutter or something ever break since any rational people know these cameras are all computers with lens, so we need to update them every year or 2 unless we opt for a full frame or MFB.

if it is a temporal body ,why do we need to waste more money on a bit better build or look of it?

this is what those EOS7D crowd never get it , they really seriously deny the fact the 7D is nothing better than the D90 and much lower class camera than the 5D2 and argue to death how much better the 7D is than the 5D2 AF wise against 5D2 users or any one recommend it over the 7D whenever 7Dvs5D2 comes out in any forum..........

But think about this , in next year , 7Dwill be already replaced , but the 5D2 will have life until at least to 2011 since Canon has plan to release 2 or 3 more FW updates for the mark2 but non for the 7D.

So, I d say dont waste your money on a 7D or a D300s, I had both and sold both.

they are just as noisy as a D90 or a 50D but much more expensive...............if I were to buy a something like 7D , I'd wait till next feb and get the 60D ,which will share the same sensor in the 7Dand costs much less........................................

but I think I will prefer the D90 better cause it is the ideal sized camera for my needs and when I dont mind carrying a big body , then I will just use my D700 or my 5D2 no need an inbetween body like the D300 ,the 7D the A700.etc..............they are all over priced for a just one year lasting body.

you can buy a D700 for 2k now and can sell it a year from now for about 1.5k , you can buy a D300s or 7D for about 1.5k but when you sell it you will lose much more with a D300s or a 7D than a D700.......................so, actually the 7D class of body is the most expensive in the long run.

unless what we shoot are only bird in flight or day light sports there is no reason to buy a high end APS-C...............

Tea Time

Tea Time

Today was kind of a strange day. I didn't have to go to the office until noon, and Kendall (my boss) never showed up. So, my friends and I decided we would like to take a long weekend and fly to Singapore. We spent a while looking up places to see and flights to Singapore. The air tickets are surprisingly cheap. I am still thinking about Korea though. Plus, the flight to Korea is cheaper and only about an hour, whereas the flight to Singapore is like 6 or 7 hours. Anyway, this is just a thought right now.
I was having a pretty bad allergy day, so Kumi took me to the for some medicine. That was great. I got to see another little shopping center. There is a kind of outdoor/indoor fresh fruit and vegetable market near our office. That's nice. Maybe next week we can take a walk there and get some apples for lunch.
In today's english club, we only had 5 students in two hours. The first hour was kindergarten through 2nd grade boys. They are energetic. . . . and hard to handle. Oh, and they have no desire to speak english. We got them to memorize some parts of the body I guess. I suppose they will forget it by next time. Oh well. Then, we had a high school girl. Yes, just one. That was ok. She can speak english quite well, but is not extremely talkative. I guess we will organize some sort of game or theme for next week's class.

KAP or Kite Aerial Photography kite test

KAP or Kite Aerial Photography kite test

I had another kite arrive today, a HQ Flowform 2. Conditions where reasonable so took my four kites for a spin. I attached my i-gatu GPS data tracker to each kite in turn.

Data collected with a i-gatu GPS data tagger, then imported into Google Earth. i-gatu height data quality is variable?

Four KAP kites used over an afternoon flying. All tethered to a fixed point with the same length of line, approx. 70 m. Time line along the bottom of the image each flight of a kite is with in a box, a photo of the kite used appears within that box. Yellow line is the ground level 150m.

First kite is a red Kiwi Fishing kite, mid hight and mid range number 2 flight box. A bit skittish, needs a little bit more tuning as there is still a left lean!

Tagger was place in my pocket before being attached to the second kite, this gave a below ground reading!

The second kite was a Triton Genki high aspect kite fight box number 1. Very stable high over head flier. I like this kite.

Third kite, Giant DC another mid range flying kite flight box number 2. My first kite purchased for KAP, it does move around the sky a bit.

Last kite is a HQ Flowform 2. A low level long reach kite, flight box 3. Very stable flier, with and without a fuzzy tail. Better suited to higher wind speeds.

Wind condition, estimated, gusty 10mph to 15mph.

Please refer to my second image from this data set, I've divided the four kites and coloured each one differantly.

BOEING X-45A J-UCAS
The Boeing X-45A served as a scaled-down, advanced technology demonstrator for a project conducted by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) and the U.S. Air Force. The goal was to demonstrate the technologies needed to conduct suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) missions with Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAV).

In September 2000 Boeing's "Phantom Works" completed the first of two X-45A UCAVs, using research gathered from its manned Bird of Prey aircraft. After extensive ground testing, the first X-45A completed its first flight at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., on May 22, 2002, and the second vehicle followed in November.

In 2003 the Department of Defense consolidated the Boeing X-45 UCAV program with the Northrop Grumman X-47A UCAV project. The resulting Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems (J-UCAS) program employed a common operating system that integrated system components like sensors, weapons and communications equipment.

During its test program, the X-45A accomplished a number of significant events in aviation history. On April 18, 2004, the X-45A demonstrator hit a ground target with a 250-pound, inert, precision guided weapon released from its internal weapons bay. On Aug. 1, 2004, for the first time, one pilot-operator successfully controlled two X-45As in flight simultaneously.

The X-45As successfully completed their test program on Aug. 10, 2005, by autonomously flying a pre-planned SEAD mission against simulated ground-based radars and associated surface-to-air missile launchers. This test also required the UCAVs to use their on-board, decision-making software to avoid a new, unplanned threat. Their computers independently determined which aircraft would attack the new target based upon their position, weapons and fuel. After the pilot-operator back at Edwards Air Force Base checked the plan created by the UCAVs' software, the X-45As successfully attacked and returned to base.

The X-45A on display came to the museum in August 2006.

Hawker Hart II

Hawker Hart II

was a British two-seater biplane light bomber of the Royal Air Force (RAF), which had a prominent role during the RAF's inter-war period. The Hart was designed during the 1920s by Sydney Camm and built by Hawker Aircraft. It spawned several variants, including a naval version. In 1926, the Air Ministry stated a requirement for a two-seat high-performance light day-bomber, to be of all-metal construction and with a maximum speed of 160 mph (258 km/h). Designs were tendered by Hawker, Avro and de Havilland.[1] Fairey, who had sold a squadron's worth of its wooden Fox bomber in 1925, was not at first invited to tender to the specification, and was only sent a copy of the specification after protesting to the Chief of the Air Staff, Hugh Trenchard.
Hawker's design was a single-bay biplane powered by a Rolls-Royce F.XI water-cooled V12 engine (the engine that later became known as the Rolls-Royce Kestrel). It had, as the specification required, a metal, structure, with a fuselage structure of steel-tube covered by aluminium panels and fabric, with the wings having steel spars and duralumin ribs, covered in fabric. The crew of two sat in individual tandem cockpits, with the pilot sitting under the wing trailing edge, and operating a single .303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine gun mounted on the port side of the cockpit. The observer sat behind the pilot, and was armed with a single Lewis gun on a ring mount, while for bomb-aiming, he lay prone under the pilots seat.[4] Up to 520 pounds (240 kg) of bombs could be carried under the aircraft's wings.
J9052, the prototype Hart, first flew in June 1928, being delivered to the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment at RAF Martlesham Heath on 8 September. It demonstrated good performance and handling, reaching 176 mph (283 mph) in level flight and 282 mph (454 km/h) in a vertical dive. The competition culminated in the choice of the Hawker Hart in April 1929. The de Havilland Hound was rejected due to handling problems during landing and because of its part-wooden primary structure. While the Avro Antelope demonstrated similar performance and good handling, the Hart was preferred as it was far cheaper to maintain, a vital aspect to a programme during defence budget constraints that the British armed forces faced during the 1920s. The Fairey Fox IIM (which despite the name was effectively an all-new aircraft), delayed by Fairey's late start on the design compared to the other competitors, only flew for the first time on 25 October 1929, long after the Hart had been selected.
A total of 992 aircraft were built as Harts.[N 1] It became the most widely used light bomber of its time and the design would prove o be a successful one with a number of derivatives, including the Hawker Hind and Hector, being made. There were a number of Hart variants made, though only slight alterations were made. The Hart India was basically a tropicalised version of the aircraft; the Hart Special was another tropicalised version based on the Hawker Audax, a Hart variant, with desert equipment; a specialised Hart Trainer was also designed. Vickers built 114 of the latter model at Weybridge between 1931 and June 1936.
The production Hart day bomber had a single 525 hp (390 kW) Rolls-Royce Kestrel IB 12-cylinder V-type engine; a speed of 184 mph (296 km/h) and a range of 470 mi (757 km).[10] It was faster than most contemporary fighters, an astonishing achievement considering it was a light bomber, and had high manoeuvrability, making the Hart one of the most effective biplane bombers ever produced for the Royal Air Force. In particular, it was faster than the Bristol Bulldog, which had recently entered service as the RAF's front line fighter. This disparity in performance led the RAF to gradually replace the Bulldog with the Hawker Fury.
Demand for the bomber was such that 164 were built by Vickers-Armstrongs at its Weybridge factory at Brooklands between 1931 and 1936 after that company's submission of a tender, alongside the trainers mentioned above.
Operational history
The Hart entered service with No. 33 Squadron RAF in February 1930, replacing the larger and slower Hawker Horsley. No. 12 Squadron replaced its Foxes with Harts in January 1931, with a further two British-based Hart light bomber squadrons forming during 1931.
Harts were deployed to the Middle East during the Abyssinia Crisis of 1935–1936. The Hart saw extensive and successful service on the North-West Frontier, British India during the inter-war period. Four Hawker Harts from the Swedish Air Force saw action as dive bombers during the 1939-1940 Winter War as part of a Swedish volunteer squadron, designated F19, fighting on the Finnish side. Though obsolete compared to the United Kingdom's opposition at the start of the Second World War, the Hart continued in service, mainly performing in the communications and training roles until being declared obsolete in 1943.
The Hart proved to be a successful export, seeing service w

BAC TSR-2

BAC TSR-2

The British Aircraft Corporation TSR-2 was a cancelled Cold War strike aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the early 1960s. The TSR-2 was designed to penetrate a well-defended forward battle area at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in the rear with close-in bomb runs and precision drops. The TSR-2 included a number of advanced features that made it the highest performing aircraft in this role. The programme was controversially cancelled in favour of the General Dynamics F-111, a procurement that itself was later cancelled, but the smaller swing-wing Panavia Tornado was eventually developed and adopted by a European consortium to fufill broadly similar requirements.
Testing
Despite the increasing costs (which were inevitable, given the low original estimates), two prototype aircraft were completed.[18] Test pilot Roland Beamont made the first flight from A&AEE Boscombe Down, Wilts, on 27 September 1964. In the course of testing, the TSR-2 was found to easily meet the demanding GOR.339 performance specification. Aerodynamically the aircraft was almost entirely trouble-free, but there were continual problems with the engines and the undercarriage. Engine problems led to delays for the first flight which meant that the TSR-2 missed the opportunity to be displayed to the public at that year's Farnborough Airshow. In the days leading up to the testing, the Opposition defence spokesman had criticised the aircraft saying that by the time it was introduced it would face "new anti-aircraft" missiles that would shoot it down making it expensive at 16 million per aircraft (on the basis of only 30 ordered).Initial flight tests were all performed with the undercarriage down and engine power strictly limited - with limits of 250 kt and 10,000 ft on the first (15 minute) flight.[20] Shortly after takeoff on XR219's second flight, vibration from a fuel pump at the resonant frequency of the human eyeball caused the pilot to throttle back one engine to avoid loss of vision.only on the tenth test flight was the landing gear successfully retracted - problems preventing this on previous occasions, but vibration problems on landing persisted. The problem was dealt with by adding damping into the already complex landing gear. The second prototype (XR220) incorporated additional dampers in the main gear legs (fixed dampers having been flight tested on XR219).
The first supersonic test flight (Flight 14) was achieved on the transfer from the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE) at Boscombe Down to BAC Warton. During the flight, the aircraft achieved Mach 1 on dry power only (supercruise). Following this, test pilot Roland Beamont lit one of the afterburners only (because of problems with the other engine's afterburner fuel pump), with the result that the aircraft accelerated away from the chase Lightning, despite the latter engaging full afterburner on both engines. A speed of Mach 1.2 was reached on that occasion.
Over a period of six months many test flights were conducted. Most of the complex electronics were not fitted to the first prototype, so these flights were all concerned with the basic flying qualities of the aircraft which, according to the test pilots involved, were outstanding.
Project cancellation
The United States was at that point developing the swing-wing General Dynamics F-111 project as a follow-on to the F-105 Thunderchief, a fast low-level bomber designed in the 1950s with an internal bay for a nuclear weapon. There had been some interest in the TSR-2 from Australia for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), but in 1963, after being dissuaded from placing an order by Lord Mountbatten, they chose to buy the F-111 instead. The RAAF subsequently had to wait ten years before the F-111 was ready to enter service, by which time the anticipated programme cost had tripled. The RAF was also asked to consider the F-111 as an alternative cost-saving measure. In response to suggestions of cancellation BAC employees held a protest march, and the new Labour government, which had come to power in 1964, issued strong denials.
However, at two Cabinet meetings held on 1 April 1965, it was decided to cancel the TSR-2 on the grounds of projected cost, and instead to obtain an option agreement to acquire up to 110 F-111 aircraft with no immediate commitment to buy. This was announced in the budget speech of 6 April 1965. The maiden flight of the second prototype aircraft, XR220, was due on the day of the announcement, but in the event it never happened, and only the first prototype, XR219, ever took to the air. A week later the Chancellor defended the decision in a debate in the House of Commons, saying that the F-111 would prove cheaper.
To replace the TSR-2 the Ministry subsequently decided on two aircraft; the F-111K for the strike reconnaissance role, with a longer-term replacement being a joint A

Pihoihoi - New Zealand pipit – Anthus novaeseelandiae

Pihoihoi - New Zealand pipit – Anthus novaeseelandiae

Photographed on the Wellington coast just north of Plimmerton.
The New Zealand pipit, sometimes inaccurately called ground lark or native lark, is a local race (Anthus novaeseelandiae novaeseelandiae) of a very widely distributed species that occurs in Australia, the East Indies, North Africa, and Europe. It breeds on almost all the islands in the New Zealand area except the Kermadecs, the Snares, and Macquarie Island. Within its range the bird is found in a variety of open-country habitats from sea level to above the snow line, and is generally to be seen in such places as sand dunes, shingly river beds, and tussock grasslands. It is one of those birds that originally benefited, both in numbers and in distribution, from the progress of settlement. However increased use of pesticides, introduced mammalian predatorsand magpies, mayhave pushed this species into decline and it has disappeared from some former strongholds. Competition from the simialr introduced skylark has been discounted as the birds have quite different diets and co-exist seemingly without detriment to either species, in a number of areas.
Males and females look alike. The upper parts are brown, streaked with darker brown; the breast is buff and mottled with brown, and the belly is white. A dark line runs through the eye and the two outermost tail feathers are mainly white and show up clearly when the bird is in flight. Though superficially rather like the introduced skylark, the pipit is more slender in body, has a longer, finer bill, lacks any head crest, and is much paler in plumage. Behaviour is different from that of the skylark – the tail is flicked while the bird is on the ground, and the flight is usually undulating instead of the soaring and singing so characteristic of the skylark.
Breeding takes place from September to March and up to three broods may be raised by a pair in a season. About four eggs freckled with light brown and grey are laid in a well-concealed cup-shaped nest made of grass. This is placed on the ground and usually beneath growing vegetation. Incubation takes about two weeks. Small flocks may form in autumn. The pipit is mainly insectivorous, but also eats worms and small seeds. In spite of its small size the species was eaten by the old-time Maori.
In spring the male will soar and sing a short trill as he descends, but this song cannot be confused with that of the skylark. The common call is a high, slurred “tirr-eep” or “peepit” and it is from this that the species gets its common name.
The pipit and the skylark both have drab plumage to provide camouflage on the ground but the pipit is grey rather than buff coloured and has a distinctive white eyebrow. The skylark has a tuft or crest on its head whilst the pipit has a habit of flicking its tail when it walks. It is also a much bolder bird and has the typical characteristic of our endemics in that it seems unafraid of humans, whereas the skylark keeps its distance. Its call is quite harsh.
The pipit feeds almost exclusively on insects and small invertebrates and this exclusive diet may be the reason why the pipit’s numbers have declined in favour of the skylark with the increasing use of pesticides on farms. The skylark is more of a seed eater.
The breeding habits of the birds are similar, with some pairs remaining on their territory all year and breeding together year after year. The females build the nest which is a neat grass lined cup in a small depression in the ground, often concealed by an overhanging clump of grass.
The pipit was first identified for the scientific record at Queen Charlotte Sound during Captain James Cook’s second voyage by Forster, where it was noticed on the seashore feeding on small crustacea among the seaweed caste up by the waves.

Jumeirah Essex House

Jumeirah Essex House

Jumeirah Essex House
160 Central Park South
New York, NY 10019

Wikipedia reports Angelina Jolie owns the Penthouse atop the Essex House.
------------
Designed by Frank Grad, the Essex House is one of the National Trust Historic Hotels, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Frank Grad also designed the Newark Symphony Hall. Some say the hotel's name derives from Mr. Grad’s primary residence in Essex County, New Jersey.

Originally called Park Tower and then Seville Towers, the 40-story, Art Deco hotel tower opened along Central Park South in October 1931. The hotel’s first general manager, Albert Auwaerter, threw a grand opening party for 1,000 in the hotel’s Colonnades Ballroom.

By 1932 the hotel was known as the Essex House and the six-story Essex sign was erected on top of the hotel. Still today some claim the sign is offensively too large and blight on the city’s skyline.

The building is clad in brown brick with large guestroom windows and decorated setbacks. The lobby has massive fluted columns of black marble and it extends through the block as a corridor flanked by the elevator banks. Its main entrance has Art Deco gilded doors.

In 1932 the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) took title to the Essex House and retained ownership for fifteen years. Congress established the RFC in 1932 to provide liquidity and restore confidence in the banking system to offset the Great Depression.

George Burns and Gracie Allen lived at the Essex House in 1934; Betty Grable and Milton Berle were residents in the 1940s. British TV host Sir David Frost owned a 1,200 sq ft pied a terre in the Essex House during the 1990s. More recent tenants have included Angelina Jolie (penthouse at the top), Jude Law, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In the 1930s the Essex House featured a “strollers brunch” - so called for those completing a Sunday morning walk in Central Park. This leisurely meal, served from around noon to late afternoon, evolved in to the Sunday brunch.

In 1946 Samuel H. Golding, founder of Sterling National Bank and Trust Company, purchased the Essex House. At the time of his death in 1970, Samuel H. Golding was 84 years old and lived in the Essex House at 160 Central Park South. Golding’s wife, Rachel Golding, gifted to Yeshiva University $40 million in memory or her late husband Samuel H. Golding. At the time of the gift in 1992, Yeshiva had an endowment of just $293 dollars. Yeshiva is America's oldest and largest university under Jewish auspices.

Marriott purchased the hotel in 1969.

Marriott’s byline for the hotel: “When you have been spoiled everywhere else by a Marriott, where do you stay in New York? Marriott’s Essex House! “

The restaurant outlets during the 1970’s at Marriott’s Essex House included Kings Wharf Restaurant, Windjammer Bar and for Marriott, the futuristically named - Fairfield Inn Coffee Shop.

Many remember from 1970’s the TV announcer Don Pardo would proclaim that "guests of Saturday Night Live stay at the Essex House!"

Japan Air Lines Development (U.S.A.) Inc., a subsidiary of the Tokyo based national carrier bought the hotel in 1985. Its hotel affiliate Nikko Hotels International took over management and renamed the 715-room hotel - Essex House Hotel Nikko NY.

The Essex House was to be a springboard for Nikko’s future growth. In 1991, Japan Airlines spent more than $75 million in renovating the property. The room count was reduced to 580.

According to the NY Times the renovation included widening the lobby looking out on Central Park, with added seating and the reclaiming of windows in that area that in earlier renovations had been put to other uses. The entire plumbing, wiring, heating, air-conditioning and elevator systems were to be replaced.

Chef Christian Delouvrier opened the 75 seat French restaurant, Les Celebrites (previously Devereux’s on-the-Park) with a $70 average ticket. The hotel’s moderately priced restaurant was Cafe Botanica. Delouvrier previously served as executive chef at the Parker Meridien's French restaurant, Maurice.

Nikko hired Pierre Yves Rochon of Paris to serve as the interior designer. Brennan Beer Gorman was the architect for the restoration, and the contractor was Tishman Construction Company.

In March 1999 the 597-room Essex House was sold for $260,000,000 ($435,511 per room) to Strategic Hotel Capital. SHC retained Starwood Hotels to manage the hotel renamed: Essex House, A Westin Hotel, New York City.

In September 2000 Starwood created The St. Regis Club at the Essex House - a hotel within a hotel - that comprised the top floors and had 104 rooms, a restaurants and a lounge.

In September 2005, the Dubai Investment Group paid $440 million to acquire the hotel portion of the building that consisted of two components the 501-room Westin and the 104-room St. Regis. There were approximately 148 private residential condominiums located throughout the building and individually owned, of which 139 were no

Jumeirah Essex House
160 Central Park South
New York, NY 10019

The modern black and gold marquee.

Jerry-rigged Nike Tomahawk in Antarctica

Jerry-rigged Nike Tomahawk in Antarctica

In remote places, you have to improvise with what you’ve got. Would you launch this missile?

The launch tower was clearly bent to the point of being unusable as intended (which is to give an anchoring guide rail for the rocket to make sure it reaches a stable flight speed before flying free. Otherwise, it could pivot randomly before coming up to speed).

So instead, they have just lashed the top with some wire, which will hopefully break free upon launch… and the rocket will be unanchored and free-flying moments after ignition….

I have never seen a hobbyist try a launch rig this dangerous….

For the curious, I’ll post some more photos below later tonight.

Air Jordan Retro 15 (black / varsity red)

Air Jordan Retro 15 (black / varsity red)

The Air Jordan 15 (XV) Retro - Black / Varsity Red were released on November 15, 2007, and retailed for $150. They feature an all black upper constructed from full grain leather, as well as a woven material which runs across the top half of the upper. The heel counter also features a red strip which runs vertically down it. The extension of the tongue is said to be inspired by Michael Jordan himself, as he would always stick out his tongue when he just about to skool you. The shoe itself is said to be inspired by the ultra fast X-15 Fighter Jet, which was developed by NASA during the 1950’s, but it’s hard to see the resemblance, as all we see is a very ugly shoe. Although the shoe’s midsole fits loosing, which makes the wearer prone to ankle sprains, the shoe features other specifications include a hidden lace system, seamless dynamic fit sleeve and Zoom Air insoles. They also feature an injected TPR external heel counter for additional support. The outsole is constructed from two pieces with extended wraps, as well as rubber herringbone pods for increased traction. O yeah, by the way, these were a Flight Club exclusive, so if you actually did want these, you had to pay an arm and a leg, as they were highly exclusive.

How to Chop Tops (Old Skool Skills)

Chopping a top is an essential part of building a hot rod. The planning, the preparation, the actual cutting, and then the reassembly, each step must be completed correctly or the entire project will be in jeopardy. This book gives the reader six, start-to-finish; top chops that show each step in the process, from paper sketches to the final welding. Readers can use the examples shown in the book to perform their own chop – while avoiding the mistakes that first-time builders often make.
This book contains more than photo sequences, and also includes interviews with professional hot rod builders who help to explain the fine points of cutting and welding. As they explain, careful planning, followed by cautious execution, can reduce the amount of work enormously, and ensure a positive outcome—a very cool hot rod with a chopped top.

National Lampoon's Vacation [Blu-ray]

Everything is planned, packed – and about to go hilariously wrong. The Griswolds are going on vacation. In the driver’s seat is Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), an Everyman eager to share the open road and the wonders of family togetherness. Myriad mishaps, crude kin (Randy Quaid), encounters with a temptress (Christie Brinkley), financial woes, Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca) on the roof, one security guard (John Candy) and 2,460 miles later, it’s a wonder the Griswolds are together. There’s never been a family vacation like it. Except maybe yours. And that helps explain why National Lampoon’s Vacation remains so popular…and so very funny.

Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch. --Jim Emerson
