The Golden Temple in Amristar, India is the holiest shrine in the Sikh faith. This was taken close to sunset.

Everyone is required to remove their shoes and cover their heads. I "borrowed" an orange head cover from the community pile, washed it and kept it. It remained tied to my camera bag for the rest of the trip.

I took the train to Amritsar from Delhi, seated in "chair class." Airplane seats but better service than any airline, albeit slower. Bottled water, newspaper, tea, breakfast all included in the ticket price.

Photo taken at Singapore Changi Airport ...Terminal 3

Singapore Changi Airport (IATA: SIN, ICAO: WSSS), Changi International Airport, or simply Changi Airport, is the main airport in Singapore. A major aviation hub in Southeast Asia, it is about 17.2 kilometres (10.7 mi) north-east from the commercial centre in Changi, on a 13 square kilometres (5.0 sq mi) site.

The airport, operated by the Changi Airport Group, is the home base of Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways, Valuair, and Jett8 Airlines Cargo. As of September 2010, Changi Airport serves more than 100 airlines flying off to some 200 cities in about 60 countries and territories worldwide ,.[4] The airport is a secondary hub for Qantas, which uses Singapore as the main stopover point for flights on the Kangaroo Route between Australia and Europe. Qantas is the largest foreign airline to operate from the airport, with over two million passengers annually. An important contributor to the Economy of Singapore, more than 28,000 people are employed at the airport, which accounts for over S$4.5 billion in output.

In 2010, the airport handled 42,038,777 passengers, a 13% increase over the 2009 fiscal year.[5] This made it the 18th busiest airport in the world and the fifth busiest in Asia by passenger traffic in 2010. The airport breached the 40 million mark for the first time in its history on 15 December 2010, recorded its busiest month in December 2010 (4.06 million) and its busiest day on 18 December 2010 with 146,000 passengers handled.[6] In addition to being an important passenger hub, the airport is one of the busiest cargo airports in the world, handling 1,813,809 tonnes of cargo in 2010.[7] The total number of commercial aircraft movements was 263,593 in 2010.[8]

Incentives such as the Air Hub Development Fund, first introduced in 2003, have proven effective in attracting airlines.[9] A new S$300 million fund to strengthen Changi's hub status began in 2007 when the previous S$210 million fund expired. A new S$1.75 billion Terminal 3 opened on 9 January 2008.[10][11] Terminal 1 will be upgraded along the lines of the renovated Terminal 2, with the latter costing S$240 million. Changi has been courting both premium and budget travellers with the opening of a "commercially important persons terminal" by JetQuay and a S$45 million Budget Terminal in 2006.

Since its opening in 1981, the airport has made its mark in the aviation industry as a benchmark for service excellence, winning over 360 awards since 1981,[12] including 27 'Best' awards in 2009 alone. Changi Airport's efforts to counter the onset of age include periodic physical upgrades to its existing terminals, building of new facilities and the provision of a high level of customer service.[13]

Premium Clubhouse

Premium Clubhouse

The "Premium Clubhouse" in Autostadt, Wolfsburg (Germany), represents the Volkswagen Group's multi-brand luxury and premium division. The British architect, Stephen Williams, accentuated the pavilion's unusual elliptic interior by adding a curved walkway and a lounge that virtually floats into the space. The exhibition area is characterised by the mirror-finish Bugatti Veyron, an artwork by artist Olaf Nicolai, and the artistic installations of Anselm Reyle and Peter Zimmermann.

Working site-specifically, Nicolai creates mental spaces in which he explores aesthetic perceptions. He challenges the observer to pay close attention as he transforms objects showing them in a different light. In his new work "Apres vous", Nicolai displays a mirror-finish Bugatti in a mirrored room. The Bugatti Veyron is arguably the most technically intricate vehicle of all time, with its superb craftsmanship represents the pinnacle of excellence and exclusivity in the automotive world. The harmonious planes and structured lines of this elegant automobile are a reflective area in which the observer sees himself reflected back ad infinitum from the mirrors, thus becoming part of the exhibit: a phenomenon of endless play-back in which both the boundaries of the space and the boundary between object and observer are blurred.

Blank: The Power of Not Actually Thinking at All (A Mindless Parody)

A smart, hilarious parody of Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling Blink.
Stop! Don't think! You already know what this book is about. That is the power of Blank: the power of not actually thinking at all. Using what scientific researchers call 'Extra–Lean Deli Slicing' (or would, if they actually bothered to research it), your brain has already decided whether you're going to like Blank, whether its cover goes with your shirt, and whether it will make you look smart if somebody sees you reading it on the train.
Chances are you and your shirt are both liking it a lot, you're going to buy several copies, and you don't even know why! That's why you've absolutely got to read Blank: to find out why your brain keeps doing these wacky things without your permission. In Blank, a hilarious parody of the No. 1 bestseller it looks eerily like (and sort of rhymes with) and that your brain wisely advised you to just read a review or magazine excerpt about while avoiding the actual book itself, the brilliantly impulsive and slightly irresponsible Noah Tall explains how people as diverse as General Custer, Roy Rogers, a semi–famous rock star, and the entire New York City Police Department either won big or lost miserably as a result of their minds going completely blank.

So when the thick-witted young pervert who calls himself Blank shows up at her school claiming to be one, Aki Clark has every reason to be skeptical. However, between his dedication, his ridiculous way with women, and his ability to make her laugh, Aki finds herself drawn to this man with no memory. But when they find themselves in the midst of a dark plot by the terrorist organization Raizen, Blank had better remember his secret agent skills quickly, or risk losing a lot more than his memory. From the manic mind of Pop Mhan (Batgirl, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man, SpyBoy) comes a sordid tale of spies, satellites and sexy schoolgirls!

Witness the east Africa’s wildebeest migration, Wildebeest Migration safari, African Wildebeest Migration.

Witness the east Africa’s wildebeest migration, Wildebeest Migration safari, African Wildebeest Migration.

Wildebeest location updates (see below) and a month by month guide to lodges and camps giving you the best opportunity to witness the east Africa’s wildebeest migration.
Wildebeest Migration

The endless plains of east Africa are the setting for the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle – the 1.5 million animal ungulate (wildebeest) migration. From the vast Serengeti plains to the champagne colored hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara over 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened grass.

There is no real beginning or end to a wildebeest’s journey. Its life is an endless pilgrimage, a constant search for food and water. The only beginning is at the moment of birth. An estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week period early each year – usually between late January and mid-March.

The Migratory Path
December, January, Feburary, March: The Serengeti National Park / Ngorongoro Conservation Area is arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. During the months December through March the seemingly unending plains of the southern Serengeti and the Conservation Area are inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. The great herds graze on rain ripened grass. This is the best time to visit the Serengeti.

In the calving season (late January through mid March when over 80% of the wildebeest give birth over a period of a few weeks) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains (Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
During this period the migration is best observed from a luxury mobile camp in the Ndutu / Naabi area or from Ndutu Safari Lodge.

April, May: During the months April and May the depleted plains are unable to sustain the endless herds. The migration, sweeping west and north, moves from the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the long grass plains and woodland of the Serengeti’s western Corridor, almost to Lake Victoria.

This period is during the long rains and is considered off season for wildlife viewing in east Africa as roads are often impassable. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp and the Serengeti Serena Lodge are fine for wildlife viewing during this time. So are campsites in the Ndutu/Naabi area.

June: By the end of May the wildebeest have exhausted the Western Corridor’s best pastures and the herds must move further north. Entering the Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle breeding occurs May through June.

This is a transitional period between the rains and the dry season. Faru Faru River Lodge, Sasakwa Hill Lodge, Sabora Plains Tented Camp, Grumeti River Camp, Migration Camp, and Kirawira Camp are good options for viewing the migration at this time. Seronera and Moru area campsites are best..

July, August, September, October: By July the countless herds have amassed along the swollen Mara River – a final barrier from the short sweet grasses of the Masai Mara. Sometimes the crossing place they have chosen is shallow allowing the majority of animals to pass safely. In other areas the waters boil with drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles. Please note that the vast majority of travelers do not witness the wildebeest crossing of the Mara as the timing and duration varies widely each year – in years of little rain very few wildebeest cross the Mara River into Kenya.

Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Mara. We recommend Governor’s Il Moran Tented Camp as the leading safari camp in the Masai Mara. Other tented camps include Governor’s Main Camp, Little Governor’s Camp, and Bataluer Camp. Tanzanian lodges recommended during this time include Faru Faru River Lodge, Sasakwa Hill Lodge, Sabora Plains Tented Camp, Grumeti River Camp, Migration Camp and Kirawira Camp. Kirawira and Moru area campsites are best.

November: The arrival of the short rains call the migration southward. During the short rains of November the wildebeest migration is best viewed from Klein’s Camp. Campsites in the Lobo area are best..

As November ends the migration is making its way back to the southern Serengeti and early in the year they once again give birth. The circle of life is complete.

*Note – the migration is a natural event and the timing varies month by month; year by year.

Maasai Mara and Serengeti and the wildebeest migration has lately been declared the 7Th (seventh) New wonder of the world by ABC.This has been decided by a panel of experts which included an oceanographer- M/s silvia Earlier, range and wildlife management expert,astrophysicist-Neil de Grasse Tyson and a tour expert invited by ABC after six days rigorous selection and classification exercise which ended on 17th November 2006 with a breakfast TV show “Good Morning America” televising a live interview with the Kenya wildlife dire

hobos

hobos

These two went on a serious hobo mission, rather than link to a place without a permalink available, I'm just gonna copy & paste Mikes words below:

Entry #1:
6/19/2007

Hey dudes, Here's an update. First off, hopping freights can be really awesome.

Catching out of San Antonio was super mellow. It took a long time, though. It took us 13 hours. We met a legit pro-hobo (Alien Jack) who knows everything about hopping freights and everything about every yard. He rode with us to Houston. We separated but planned on meeting back up to catch out to Fort Worth, but he never showed at the yard. I think it was because the weather got so shitty. Alien is never in a hurry.

The Houston yard is mammoth and located in a desolate, degenerate area. We got soaked in Houston. We waited under a bridge for about 18 hours. Wet, swatting mosquitoes while trying to sleep on pavement next to two of the worst hobos in the world. This is how hopping freights can be really miserable. No trains were going our way the entire night. Maybe because we weren't in a good place to catch out. Also, because it was Sunday, the slowest day for trains. The two hobos, Junior and Echo, had been traveling for 14 days and they only got from Alabama to Houston...but their destination is Florida. They were total morons and it was clear why they had become homeless. At one point Junior tried to tell me directions: "That's east, and that's south (points in the opposite direction). Yes, that is how stupid they were. We'd be woken up by trains leaving the yard throughout the night and he'd say, quite confidently, that this was our train. Then it would rip by in the wrong direction. I can almost guarntee that they're still under that bridge, smoking cigarettes and swearing in really bad cajun accents.

So, we woke up in Houston, exhausted, filthy and with some strange foot rash. We tried to talk so some rail workers but they didn't provide any help. Then the rain came again as we walked from our spot to a different spot about 3 miles down a road. Soaked again and basically hopeless as far as leaving Houston by train. If you're taking small trains in between small towns it isn't very difficult. But trying to navigate very large distances takes a lot of experience and a shit ton of time.

Three phone calls later we were in a cab headed for a rental car service. We drove our red Chevy Cobalt (with a spoiler) out of TX, through Louisiana, up through Mississippi. We checked out sites and crashed in a motel. Credit cards are awesome. After stopping in Graceland and Nashville the next day, we landed in Cincinnati. I've got places to stay here. We're dropping the car off soon and catching out of here to Pittsburgh on Friday. Hopefully all goes well. So far my tips for hopping are: Give yourself unlimited time. I'd say the average time it would take to get across the country would be three weeks. You spend and lot of waiting around, you walk everywhere, and trains go surprisingly slow. It took us 9 hours to go the distance of a 5 hour car ride. Also, take very strong insect repellent. Maybe even a small tent. If Brandon and I don't have West Nile by now it's a miracle.

Another thing is don't rely on books or websites for information. They help a little, but they're nothing like the real thing. They can't equip you for this shit. Trains can speed up and slow down really fucking fast. I never read that once. Don't plan on hopping a freight unless it's stopped or has just begun to move out of a yard. Last, be prepared for mental torture and try to have fun. You will definitely go crazy very early on. Try to make the best of it. Go with a friend you love and enjoy the insanity.

Through all the shit so far it has actually been an awesome trip. Definitely a different side of life and it will give you a different perspective on society and basically everything else in life.

Well, I'll write again when we've moved on.

Best, Michael

Back with more. The first day in the Natti Brandon and I were getting coffee and I saw some crusty punks in the back. Another tip: Crusty punks always know someone who jumps trains. I asked if they knew anything about catching out of Cincinnati and sure enough, one of them did. He even had a crew change guide which is really helpful. After a day of hanging out with him we copied the crew change and tried to head out.

We spent another night sleeping under a bridge in a shit part of town. The dirt was surprisingly soft and I slept like a rock. Unfortunately no trains were going out that night. It was a small yard. A couple tore through on the mainline, but none crew changed. Another tip: Crews rarely change on the mainline, or stop for any reason. Your best bet is to find a refueling station. Almost all trains stop there. When we woke up, Brandon's foot AIDS had spread up his body and was now taking over. He was an itchy, red, bumpy, miserable mess of a person. Got a car ride out of the Natt

Washington Dulles International Airport (VA) (Images of America)

Washington Dulles International Airport is one of the three major airports that transports passengers into and out of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The beauty of the site is admired not only by millions who arrive and leave the area, but by local residents as well. After an extensive study of three separate locations in Virginia, Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower agreed to the Chantilly site and later chose to rename the world's first jet airport after his former secretary of state, John Foster Dulles. Renowned architect Eero Saarinen designed the magnificent building that serves as a gateway in and out of the United States. Today, the once peaceful farming area and small villages have turned into a fast-paced business world filled with thousands of new homes and residents.

United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) - Loening OA-1A - San Francisco - Air and Space Smithsonian - Udvar Hazy Center - July 29th, 2009 680 RT

Smithsonian description:
The historic Pan-American Goodwill Flight of 1926 and 1927 through Mexico and Central and South America was intended to improve relations with Latin American countries, to encourage commercial aviation, and to provide valuable training for Air Corps personnel. The flight was made by ten pilots in five Loening OA-1A amphibian aircraft. To stimulate public interest, each airplane was named after a major U.S. city-the New York, the San Antonio, the San Francisco, the Detroit, and the St. Louis.

The 35,200 km (22,000 mi) flight began on December 21, 1926, from San Antonio, Texas. The journey took 59 flying days, interspersed with 74 days for scheduled maintenance and diplomatic meetings and ceremonies. The flight concluded at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C., on May 2, 1927. Within three weeks, however, the impressive achievement was eclipsed by Lindbergh's solo trans-Atlantic flight in the Spirit of St. Louis.

The San Francisco was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution by the War Department in December 1927. It was restored by the National Air and Space Museum in 1964-1965.

United flight 7832 at Dulles airport

United flight 7832 at Dulles airport

My flight was originally scheduled to depart Dulles for the hour long trip at 8:30am, but kept getting pushed back and back and back because nobody could be bothered to unfreeze the plane which had apparently "frozen the door shut" over the previous night.

I suppose limited staff and a multitude of aircraft needing attention would naturally force a delay in takeoff, but we didn't actually leave Dulles until 3:20pm, almost seven hours late. Many, many other planes left long before us that were originally schedule to depart only an hour after our planned departure. What made this most irritating is that the previous night I declined an offer to give up my seat in San Francisco for a later flight (which would have rewarded me with a free hotel room, a good night's sleep, $400 in travel credit, and an upgrade to business class on the next flight out) since I needed to be back at work the next day. If I'd accepted the offer I still would have arrived in time to depart on this infernal connecting flight.

Transportation in Loudoun County, Virginia: Washington Dulles International Airport, Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 33. Chapters: Washington Dulles International Airport, Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park, Virginia State Route 267, U.S. Route 340 in Virginia, Virginia State Route 620, Virginia State Route 7, U.S. Route 15 in Virginia, Virginia State Route 28, U.S. Route 50 in Virginia, Virginia State Route 606, Snicker's Gap Turnpike, Virginia State Route 9, White's Ferry, Leesburg Executive Airport, Virginia State Route 287, Virginia State Route 659, Loudoun County Parkway, Point of Rocks Bridge, Leesburg Bypass, Virginia State Route 209, Route 772, Loudoun County Commuter Bus. Excerpt: The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park is a popular and unusually-shaped regional park in Northern Virginia. The park's primary feature is the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail (abbreviated as W&OD Trail), an asphalt-surfaced paved rail trail that runs through densely populated urban and suburban communities as well as through rural areas. Most of the trail travels on top of the rail bed of the former Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, which closed in 1968. Although the park is 44.8 miles (72.1 km) long, it is only about 100 feet (30 m) wide. The rail trail is approximately 10 feet (3.0 m) wide through much of its length and is suitable for walking, running, cycling, and roller skating. A crushed bluestone surfaced bridle path travels near the paved trail in the park's most westerly 32 miles (51 km). The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) administers and maintains the park and its trails. NVRPA keeps most of the parkland surrounding the trails in a natural state. The park authority has placed alongside the paved trail a series of mile markers and a number of interpretative exhibits that describe the historic and natural features of the park (see Washington and Old Dominion Railroad#Stations for locations of...

We did Rick Steve's Rome at night walk.
11/20/2004 When in Rome! Heather and Rich fly to Rome and have fun on their first day.

It is 11:30 pm local time, and oh but we've been footsore and on the way. It all started a couple of day ago, Thursday for us, when we left home about 6:40 pm with Maddy and Spencer. I officially finished the book by writing two chapter intros. I later got on line and learned that Schuyler planned to do intros for ch1 and ch6, and write the 'how gps works' section for ch5. This meant that I am, officially, at least until QC (quality control) comes back, done with the book.

Wow.

And we drove to Dad's and the kids were rambunctious until we opened up our new CD's for Harry Potter and the Prisonar of Azkaban...we listened to the first CD and that quieted them right down!

And we had a dinner at Dad and Judy's and then up to my Mom's, where we chatted a bit...then bed. And the 5:15 am alarm. It didn't feel all that bad, surprisingly.

The flight to NY went well. I watched the incredibly stupid, but still amusing, movie Anchor Man, heather geeked on our itinery. Then I did a bit, then geeked with my GPS.

Note to self...GPS is cool, and this whole idea of narrative of place is cool, but really, taking GPS tracks in Rome doesn't work that well. I think it is best supplemented with voice recordings of places and later geocoding to a map.

hmmm. I try and create meaning by automatically/quasi automatically parsing track logs of less meaningful trips or segments of trips-down I5 to go lobster diving, for example, but perhaps it is the meaning in the trip that is more important. The GPS is a tool for helping to look at that, but I think I can post process intermittent track points, coupled with memory and photos and voice recordings, to get a better sense of trip.

Anyway...the leg to NY went very quickly. Then we were stuck on the tarmac for a bit while our gate was cleared for us. Eeeks...I had to pee!

Then we actually were in a bit of a rush to make our connection...we got there before the 'we are closing the door on your ass' stage, but not much!

I felt a bit ick for a bit, but once I took an ibuprofen, got rid of my heart burn and had some dinner i was okay. We took sleeping pills when we took off. I took another one after dinner, and then forced myself to try to sleep.

It didn't feel as though it were working-almost as though the sleeping pill made weary but not asleep...odd feeling. But I guess I slepped. Heather woke me when they served breakfast. I did not wake easily, and I went back to sleep a couple of times. I was seeing double for part of the time.

Poor Heather says she only slept about 2 hours.

But we arrived, and waltzed through customs and onto the train. Amazing! About 10 euros apiece and we had a nice train ride with two Italian women and an italian man...we didn't really talk, but, oh well.

Into the train station, and a bit of trouble getting oriented to find our hotel. Now it is easy, but the first time was not so easy.

And then somehow it got later and we figured out the metro to go to the vatican. I was pissy about wanting to eat, and we had trouble with that-the place Heather wanted for us wasn't open until 12:30. We had okay ham and cheese sandwiches and excellent olives from a deli, ate in the plazza (?) by the gellatti milleneum.

Then we went up to the vatican. We had missed the vatican museum, sadly, but we perservered and toured Saint Peters. Heather and I were seperated at this point. I hooked up with a free tour guide and learned lots of great stuff.

Heather called when I was about to learn how to become a Swiss Guard. I accidentally hung up on her, and then couldn't figure out how to call her back, but I guessed she'd be in the front, and she was. She was pooped! But gamely lead me through the tombs of the popes. That is neat...it is so non-cave like...and yet, there is plenty of room for more of them :-)

Well we hiked back to the metro, metroe'd back to the train station and walked back to the hotel and took a 2ish hour nap...it was about 3:00 when we started this 'nap' thing.

Well we woke and did like the Romans, and then got ourselves out of the hotel. We took the 40 bus out and walked down to campo di fiori and did Rick Steve's 'Nighttime rome' walk...

We had dinner in the Piazza Navona at the 'Tre Scalini' cafe/Mokarabina coffee bar. We had drinks an appetizer and a primi-ie, we shared 1 appetizer and 1 primi, and a desert, shared, and it cost a bit. Later we saw what looked like better food for much less money. live and learn. I loved the pantheon (only the outside, as it was closed) and saw where kids had set up to camp at the pantheon, etc.

We got minorly scammed at the Trevi fountain over some flowers that were 'given' to us...and when I didnt' pay enough for them the guy took 2 of three back! ack. I was not too annoyed-I mean, I should know better, right?

Flights To Amsterdam From London

flights to amsterdam from london

AMSTERDAM. Schiphol airport / Aeropuerto Schiphol

AMSTERDAM. Schiphol airport / Aeropuerto Schiphol

ENG “A few years ago I was going through the process of splitting up with my first serious girlfriend. She went away to Greece for the summer and when she came back she’d had a holiday romance with some Belgian guy. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it seemed that the guy in question was going to show up in London some time over the next few weeks. After three hellish days and nights, I realized that I was dangerously close to losing my head. I biked over to my dad’s flat and emotionally blackmailed him into lending me enough cash to leave the country.
On that trip I learn something very important. Escape through travel works. Almost from the moment I boarded my flight, life in England became meaningless. Seat-belt signs lit up, problems switched off. Broken armrests took precedence over broken hearts. By the time the plane was airborne I’d forgotten England even existed.”

I highly recommend reading the book The Beach by Alex Garland. The movie didn’t kill me, though it’s worth watching for its spectacular settings in Thailand. However, I really don’t think it’s the movie’s fault. I just don’t think you can capture the philosophy of the book in just images. It makes for a good read, especially because you get inside the character’s head. There’s a phrase that just nails how I feel about travelling and life in general. “If I’d learned one thing from travelling it was that the way to get things done was to go ahead and do them. Don’t talk about going to Borneo. Book a ticket, get a visa, pack a bag, and it just happens.” That’s exactly it. If you want to get it done, get it done. Or as that famous ad says, “just do it”. If you’re talking about it, you’re wasting breath, you’re probably trying to auto-convince yourself, find reasons as to why not do it.

O como dice ese anuncio tan famoso, “just do it”. Si no haces mas que hablar sobre ello, malgastas aliento, entonces probablemente te estas intentando auto convencer, encontrar excusas para no hacerlo.

My trip Itinerary

My trip Itinerary

I came to London determined to take a trip backpacking through Europe at the end of the semester. So I subsequently ordered a Eurail ticket and made an itinerary with some online tools and their train schedule booklet. I traveled alone for nearly a month.
This is the map they send you, among other materials, when you order a Eurail ticket. The notes explain my planned trip itinerary starting in London. Almost every step did not go according to plan for one reason or another. But it was good to have a plan. In the end I actually did make it through this route, which surprises even me.

Spacy Tracy - Top Flight H. (G2)

Spacy Tracy continued her upward ascent with a come-from-behind victory in the Grade 2, $150,000 Top Flight Handicap on Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Last of six exiting the chute, Spacy Tracy made a steady advance along the backstretch to race in fourth as the field rounded the far turn. Jeremy Rose kept Spacy Tracy along the rail to the top of the stretch and swung his mount outside nearing the eighth pole, and she made a determined run once given her cue to take command with 70 yards remaining en route to a three-quarter length decision over Our Khrysty.

“The trip was pretty much perfect, other than that I had to wait a lot longer than I wanted to,” said Rose. “She really rated well and responded perfectly. She’s coming into her own and every race she’s been getting better and faster.”

Spacy Tracy, the second-highest price in the field at 6-1, returned $15.20 for a $2 win wager and completed the one-mile distance in 1:35.28.

My cousin Tsambika and I were driving from austin to cuero texas for a wedding, when my sisiter Ismene called and asked us if we wanted to go on a sudden trip somewhere. She wanted someplace near a beach, a place where we could just go swimming and lay in the sun to relax. It's a greek tradition that when ever you are frustrated, stressed or feel stuck, you need to travel across water to let your worries pass. First we were gonna go to bermuda, but the flights were not convenient. Then it was costa rica, but we couldn't stay long enough. then it was grand caymen, but we couldn't find a hotel. Finally at 7pm, we settled on cabo san lucas. Meanwhile me and tsambika drove from Cuero straight to san antonio to grab our passports and pack a couple things. we left san antonio at 9pm and arrived in austin at 10:45 so we could pick up the rest of our stuff and grab some coffee. We left for houston at 1am to meet Ismene at her home and catch our 9am flight to cabo. We finally got to houston at 4:30 am. She had mojitos waiting for us.
We slept on the plane and when we landed four hours later, changed in our swim suits and went straight to the water. The next few days we drank, swam, ate, kayaked, rock climbed, parasailed, snorkeled and got hit on by eighteen year olds posing as students from the University of Oregon. It was awesome.

flight time to russia - The James

The James Bond Collection

The James Bond Collection

AUCTION DESCRIPTION

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop cliches (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

Very wet and old. Trillium camtschatcense on Rishiri-chô, Hokkaido, Japan

Very wet and old. Trillium camtschatcense on Rishiri-chô, Hokkaido, Japan

"Rain, rain, go away, Come again some other day", dripped into my mind as I walked to the dentist this morning. And I thought of John Bellenden Ker Gawler (ca. 1764-1842). He was the writer of a four-volume study of English nursery rhymes in which he put forward the idea that they were derived from a medieval form of Dutch. But his main field was Botany. It was he who gave this Trillium its specific name 'camtschatcense' (1805 in "The Botanical Magazine").
'Camtschatcense' is a Latin form of Kamtschatska, the largest peninsula of East Asia, jutting out from eastern Russian Siberia into the ocean between the Bering Strait and the Sea of Ochotsk - well-known for the crash of a Korean Airlines 747 on November 1, 1983, when it was shot down by Russian fighter jets. On the northern coast of Hokkaido, Japan, not far from the sea-faring town of Wakkanai, there are monuments commemorating the victims of this horrific disaster.
Just to the west southwest, in Hokkaido's shadow, shivering, as it were, but also shimmering in a low sun, in the Sea of Japan, are two small, wonderful islands: Rebun-cho and Rishiri-cho. There's a ferry from Wakkanai that I boarded in the Spring in weather and a chill much like here today to spend a few days looking at plants and flowers on these remote isles. Some of the photos I took at that time I've posted earlier. But this Trillium - early Spring flower yet already wet and aged - seemed appropriate to show today. I saw some drippy Bumblebees around other flowers, but this Trillium was well past its prime when it would no doubt have been visited by our furry flying friends.
I had no idea that in particular this kind of flowering Trillium plant - but not the flower itself, of course - can live to twenty years! Amazing! Enough to put the thought of rain and the feeling of chill well to the back of one's mind.

Moscow - After a little drama with the Turkish Airlines, I am finally on boarded the 3 hrs flight to Moscow. As we approach Moscow, you can see the famous Moscow Rings, a set of circular roads radiating from the center (the Kremlin) which is similar to the Beijing ring roads. The Sheremetyevo is average Eastern European standard. At the custom, as I expected the Russian custom is going to give me some hard time. They first took my Hong Kong SAR passport to check if it is fake. They kept questioning why I came to Moscow by myself. I think they are a little worry I come here to work (esp. they learned I booked the Izmailovo hotel which cater to business travelers). At the end they still let me go, what a relief….

The Rocket Men : Vostok and Voskhod, the First Soviet Manned Spaceflights

This book is the first known work in the west dedicated to revealing the full story of the Vostok space missions, and the first fledgling steps off our planet. In Leaving the Planet authors Rex Hall and Dave Shayler review this Soviet demonstration of technological progress. The text examines both the developmental and operational aspects of the missions, which at the time were clouded in secrecy. This fascinating and important text features a significant amount of new material on the spacecraft, as well as the history, design and development of the launch vehicle. It also includes the full story of the men and women who trained for these missions, some of whom never flew.

Pierce Winningham McKennon
Major U.S. Air Force
1919-1947

Forest Park Cemetery - Fort Smith Arkansas

[Note: Pierce McKennon was born in Clarksville, Arkansas, on November 30, 1919, to Dr. Parma D. McKennon, a dentist, and Inez Winningham McKennon. He had two older brothers. The family moved to Fort Smith in 1921.

He graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in Fort Smith and entered the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville on a music scholarship in 1937, but he left in 1938 after poor academic performance. He briefly returned to the university but never graduated.

Yet success cannot always be measured by academic performance. During World War II, he destroyed over twenty German aircraft and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with four clusters, the Air Medal with sixteen clusters, the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Unit Citation, and the Croix de Guerre.

He was killed in a training accident after the war down in Texas on June 18, 1947. In his honor, the city of Fort Smith named the street on which the Fort Smith Regional Airport is located McKennon Boulevard.]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was no mistaking that Major Pierce Winningham "Mac" McKennon was a native of the Great State of Arkansas. In 26 months of combat in the European Theatre of Operations, he flew several fighters which carried distinctive names and artwork. His most famous and most colorful plane, however, was the red-nosed P-51D Mustang, which he named Ridge Runner III and which sported an Arkansas Razorback Hog.

Major McKennon would amass 560 combat flight hours in WWII. He was shot down on two occasions, evaded capture both times and, after each evasion, managed to return to flight status. He would finish the war with 21.68 victories (12 aerial and 9.68 ground) and become his squadron's commanding officer for the last eight months of the war - not too bad for a young man who washed out of flight training in the United States Army Air Corps in early 1941. Also certainly not too bad for a 21-year-old Arkie who came to Canada, won his wings in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), lost them in a Court Martial, then, unbelievably, won them back again for a second time!

McKennon became a member of an Eagle Squadron in Shropshire, England, and practiced throughout 1942 with a Royal Air Force (RAF) training unit.

In anticipation of re-joining the USAAF, Mac applied for and was granted an honorable discharge from the RCAF in London, England, on November 23, 1942, after having served one year and 198 days.

McKennon joined the USAAF as a 2nd Lieutenant on 25 November 1942. On February 22, 1943, he was attached to the 335th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group which was stationed at Debden Air Base outside London. After three attempts and almost two years of training, he finally became the only thing he truly wanted to he - a Fighter Pilot!

The Fourth Fighter Group was the successor to the RAF Eagle Squadrons, "The Yanks In The RAF." Initially composed of pilots who either couldn't get in the U.S. flying services to begin with or who flunked out of training, the Fourth went on to become one of the most successful air combat units of World War II.

In a group full of outsized personalities, from commander Don Blakeslee on down, Pierce "Mac" McKennon stood out. The late Capt. Rohert H. (Bob) Wehrman recounted:

"Mac had the greatest way of dealing with pre-mission jitters, not just for himself, for everybody. You could always tell who was set for a mission that day - they got fresh eggs and bacon. A lot of us, we'd be so worried or scared, we couldn't eat. Not Mac. He ate like a horse and he'd eat yours if you were going to leave it. When he was through, he'd get up and go over to this old piano in the corner of the mess. He'd turn and look at each of us, and then say, 'For those about to die...' Then he'd sit down and play The Old Red Cross all the way through. When he got done, he'd launch into the most outrageous boogie-woogie version of that song you ever heard, and he never did it the same way twice! You couldn't sit there in a funk while that was going on! When he was through, everybody was raring to go. An award-winning concert pianist before the war, Mac loved boogie-woogie more than anything. I don't know how many times I've heard how he could play 'Tiger Rag' on the piano in the officers' club with a full pint of bitters clenched in his teeth, drain the glass and not miss a note."

But it was not all fun and games. While strafing parked aircraft at Rosenheim-Gahlingen Airdrome in Germany on April 16, 1945, an airfield gunner put an explosive round into the cockpit of his Mustang. Despite being wounded on the right side of his head, face, and neck and bleeding profusely, Mac managed to land at a Forward Operating Location, where they picked the shrapnel from his wounds and bandaged him up. He was advised not to fly back

Katherine Stinson - Aviation Pioneer, "The Flying Schoolgirl"

Katherine Stinson - Aviation Pioneer,

One of the historic photographs on display at the Stinson Field Terminal.

From the Handbook of Texas:

STINSON, KATHERINE (1891-1977). Katherine Stinson, pilot, was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on February 14, 1891, twelve years before the Wright brothers made their first successful flight. As a young woman, she planned to study music in Europe so that she could be a piano teacher. In order to earn enough money for her trip, she decided to become a stunt pilot and, after convincing her parents, asked Max Lillie of Chicago to instruct her. Lillie, one of the early great aviators, looked at the petite young woman and promptly refused. However she persuaded him to take her up in one of his planes, and after a mere four hours of instruction she was flying alone. Lillie then agreed to teach her stunt flying, and Stinson's career in aviation was underway. On July 12, 1912, Katherine Stinson became the fourth American woman to earn a pilot's license. As the "Flying Schoolgirl" she toured the country and thrilled thousands of viewers with her stunts at county and state fairs. Before long she not only relinquished her plans to study music, but also inspired her family to become involved in aviation. In 1913 Katherine and her mother, Emma, founded the Stinson Aviation Company in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the family's home at the time. Katherine's younger sister, Marjorie Stinson, and two younger brothers, Jack and Eddie, also adopted flying careers. Later that year Stinson moved to San Antonio. Lillie had gained permission from the United States Army to turn the parade grounds of Fort Sam Houston into a flying field. Furthermore, San Antonio's mild climate and flat terrain offered an ideal place to fly and practice stunts. The family soon joined her and established the Stinson School of Flying. Between supervising the construction and repair of the planes and managing the airfield, Stinson taught herself increasingly daring tricks. The loop-the-loop stunt was considered particularly dangerous. In a plane she had built herself, she became the first woman and fourth pilot in the United States to master the stunt.

She also pioneered in other areas of aviation. She was the first person of either sex to fly an airplane at night. Moreover, in 1915, in Los Angeles, California, she flew into the dark sky to spell out "CAL" with flares, thus becoming the first pilot to perform night skywriting. In 1916, the year Amelia Earhart graduated from high school, Stinson became the first woman to fly in the Orient. Fan clubs developed all over Japan to honor the "Air Queen." Chinese leaders were granted a private exhibition, one of the thirty-two flights that Stinson made in that country. In 1917 she set a long-distance record of 610 miles by flying alone from San Diego to San Francisco, over the mountains of Southern California. When the United States Post Office started air-mail service, Stinson became the first woman to be commissioned as a mail pilot. She broke her flying record while carrying airmail with a 783-mile flight from Chicago to near New York City. When the United States became involved in World War I and the army asked for volunteer pilots, Stinson applied, but the military twice rejected her applications because she was a woman. Undaunted, she volunteered her services as an ambulance driver and was accepted. The combination of Europe's cold climate and brutal wartime conditions proved, ironically, to be more injurious to her health than her career as a stunt pilot had been. When she returned from the war, she strled to overcome tuberculosis by moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her recuperation called for a new, less frenetic life. Trading aviation for training in architecture, she designed apartments in Santa Fe that were influenced by the architecture of the Pueblo Indians and Spanish missions. In 1928 she married Miguel Otero, Jr., a veteran airman who later became a district court judge. They had no children. At the age of eighty-six, the "world's greatest woman pilot" died in Santa Fe on July 8, 1977. She was buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Our Air France Airbus A-380 had been grounded due to an engine failure that eventually blew up a Qantas A-380 later on in the week and this was the vehicle drafted in to take us to New York. One problem - An A-380 held 200 more people than this boat which meant 200 people weren't going to the Big Apple on this flight.

Despite having boarding passes myself and Paula found ourselves relegated to the next flight out of Paris to NYC after being skipped in the queue by a bunch of folks who were only on standby for the original flight which was hardly fair really.

At least we never got blown up on the runway.....

Arriving

Arriving

Leaders make the indescribable visible. Isaiah's words, for instance, brought comfort to a defeated nation and transformed a people's imagination, empowering them to mount up with wings like eagles. Those words bear fruits today, capturing a post-modern visionary's heart, urging Chris Tomlin to call together God's people for life-renewing worship.
"I feel as though we're like this landing strip in the desert for our great, incredible God to arrive on; a way for Him to come into people's lives," Tomlin says of the album's metaphorical moniker inspired in part by Isaiah 40. Tomlin's third studio record and first in two years, Arriving demonstrates a Christian's glad surrender meeting God's welcoming arms.
Tomlin's undeniable energy is charismatic and contagious. Avoiding the trappings of public performance, Chris stands beside the people he serves, raising his voice to God with them so that they share God's presence together.
Credited with venerable church choruses such as "Forever," "We Fall Down," and "The Wonderful Cross," Tomlin is considered one of this era's top songwriters for the church with five songs in CCLI's Top 60 and four more in the service's Top 500. With millions singing his songs weekly, Chris is recognized as a pivotal voice of today's modern expression of Christian worship.
Arriving rocks with inspiring, guitar-driven pop melodies reflecting the roots traditions of Austin, Texas, where it was recorded and home to the church Tomlin co-founded, Austin Stone Community Church. The project's raw, straightforward lyrics are knotted tight with hooks as big and broad as the Lone Star state sky. Producer Ed Cash (Caedmon's Call, Kathy Mattea, Bebo Norman) brings his signature touch to the tracks, revealing that the talent pool is deeper than even the artist knew.

Arriving at Your Own Door: 108 Lessons in Mindfulness

Mindfulness opens us up to the possibility of being fully human as we are, and of expressing the humane in our way of being. Mindlessness de facto closes us up and denies us the fullness of our being alive. This book may on the surface appear to be merely another offering in the genre of daily readings. But deep within these 108 selections lie messages of profound wisdom in a contemporary and practical form that can lead to both healing and transformation. We so urgently need to rotate in consciousness in order to safeguard what precious sanity is available to us on this planet. How we carry ourselves will determine the direction the world takes because, in a very real way, we are the world we inhabit. Our world is continuously being shaped by our participation in everything around us and within us through mindfulness. This is the great work of awareness. Welcome to the threshold … to the fullness of arriving at your own door!

Pope John Paul II in Malta.

Pope John Paul II in Malta.

On Tuesday the 8th of May 2001, the Pope arrived at the Malta International Airport just after 2 pm where he was greeted by an official welcoming ceremony, which ended with a speech by the Pope: Mr President, Members of the Government, Brother Bishops, Ladies and Gentlemen. With heartfelt gratitude to God, I stand on Maltese soil for the second time. The Jubilee Pilgrimage which I am making on the Two Thousandth Anniversary of the Birth of Jesus Christ has brought me to Malta. After visiting some of the places especially connected with the history of salvation, at Sinai, in the Holy Land, and now in Athens and Damascus, my pilgrimage in the footsteps of Saint Paul brings me to you. Thank you, Mr President, for the kind invitation which you extended to me in the name of the Maltese people. Thank you for your courteous words of welcome here today. I am grateful also to the distinguished members of Parliament, the Civil and Military Authorities, the members of the Diplomatic Corps, and all who are honouring this occasion with their presence.
With affection in the Lord, I greet Archbishop Mercieca, Bishop Cauchi, and Auxiliary Bishop Depasquale, as well as the other Bishops present, some of whom represent the missionary vocation of the Maltese Church, while others are descendants of Maltese emigrants. I greet the priests, the deacons, the men and women religious; and in particular the young people who are preparing to serve the Lord in the priesthood and consecrated life. I greet the catechists and all who actively collaborate in the Church’s mission. In the words of your Patron Saint Paul I greet all the Maltese people, without exception: "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Phil 1:2).
The memory of my first visit, eleven years ago, spontaneously comes to my mind. I remember my meetings with the priests and religious, the workers, the intellectuals, the families and the young people. I remember the Co-Cathedral of Saint John in Valletta, the Marian Shrines of Mellieha and Ta' Pinu on the Island of Gozo. I remember the Bay and the Islands of Saint Paul, and in particular the ancient Grotto, venerated as the place where he stayed. I remember above all the faith and the enthusiasm of the Maltese and Gozitans.
Saint Paul arrived in Malta as a prisoner on his way to Rome, the place of his martyrdom. Here he and his shipwrecked companions were treated – as we read in the Acts of the Apostles – "with unusual kindness" (28:2). Here he bore witness to Christ and restored to health the father of Publius and other people of the Island who were sick (cf. Acts 28:8). The goodness of the Maltese people was met by the "the goodness and loving kindness of God our Saviour" (Tit 3:4). For two millennia you have been faithful to the vocation involved in that singular encounter.
Today the Successor of Peter wishes to confirm you in the same faith, and to encourage you in the spirit of Christian hope and love. He prays that, like your forbears, you too may bear good and abundant fruit. Good trees yield abundant good fruit (cf. Mt 12:33-35), as has been the case of the Venerable Servants of God whom I shall have the joy of declaring Blessed tomorrow.
Dear Maltese Friends, cherish your Christian vocation! Be proud of your religious and cultural heritage! Look to the future with hope, and set out with renewed vigour to make this new Millennium a time of solidarity and peace, of love for life and respect for God’s creation. I have entrusted my pilgrimage to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostle Paul. I invoke their intercession upon all the inhabitants of Malta and Gozo! I bless you all, and in particular the sick, the elderly and all those who are suffering in body and spirit. Il-Mulej ibierek il-poplu kollu ta’ Malta u ta’ Ghawdex! [God bless the people of Malta and of Gozo!]
At about 7pm he arrived at the Presidential Palace in the Maltese capital of Valletta and paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic Guido Demarco and other Maltese dignitaries. The Pontiff beatified Dun Gorg Preca, Nazju Falzon and Sister M. Adeodata Pisani during a Beatification ceremony at the granaries in Floriana, on Wednesday 9th May 2001. Tens of thousands of people attended the function, many of whom had been standing there since the early hours of the morning. After celebrating mass, Pope John Paul II was taken to the apostolic nunciature in Rabat for some hours of rest and a meeting with Maltese Bishops. At about 4:45pm he arrived at the Church of the Center of the Society of Christian Doctrine in Blata l-Bajda where he visited the tomb of the Blessed Dun Gorg Preca and met with and spoke to the members of the Societas Doctrinae Cristianae in the Center's auditorium. At the end of this meeting the Pope left for Malta International Airport in Gudja where he departed for Rome at 7 pm, arriving at Ciampino Airport after a 90-minute flight onboard a spec

Spitfire MkIX

Spitfire MkIX

Spitfire Mk.IX, EN199, on display at the Malta Aviation Museum, was first flown at Eastleigh on 28 November 1942 and taken on charge by 12 Maintenance Unit on 1 December, moving to 82 MU on the same day. Eight days later it moved to 47 MU followed by a move to Glasgow two days later. Here it was loaded on MV Marsa and shipped together with others to Gibraltar where it arrived by 13 January 1943 and later reassembled.

The aircraft was flown to the North Africa front on 29 January 1943. Here it was flown by Wing Commander R. Berry D.F.C., whose initials are now the codes worn on the fuselage and Squadron Leader C. F. Gray, Commanding Officer No.81 Squadron. EN199 took part in the Allied OPERATION TORCH landings and the subsequent Tunisian campaign and fought until the Axis surrender on the Cape Bone peninsula.

Following damage, EN199 was issued to No.154 Squadron which had moved from North Africa to Malta from where it took part in OPERATION HUSKY, the invasion of Sicily. The aircraft moved to the Italian mainland taking part in further operations, probably joining No.1435 Squadron when the Mark Vs were replaced by IXs. It was photographed at Brindisi in the Spring of 1944 and again later with No.225 Squadron.

From 11 October 1945 up to 3 January 1946 the aircraft was recorded as taking part in Meteorological Flights with Air Sea Rescue & Communications Flight, Hal Far. It then moved to Luqa with No.73 Squadron. Whilst at Luqa it was blown into a quarry during a gale. EN199 was struck off charge and later presented to the Boy Scout Movement based at Floriana. A few years later the aircraft was transported from the Scouts' Island Headquarters by Civil Defence Staff to their Headquarters and school at Ghargur. From Ghargur it was taken to the new rescue training wing at Targa Gap in April 1956 where it languished in a disrespectful state.

Empires of the Sea: The Siege of Malta, the Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World

In 1521, Suleiman the Magnificent, Muslim ruler of the Ottoman Empire at the height of its power, dispatched an invasion fleet to the Christian island of Rhodes. This would prove to be the opening shot in an epic strle between rival empires and faiths for control of the Mediterranean and the center of the world.

In Empires of the Sea, acclaimed historian Roger Crowley has written his most mesmerizing work to date–a thrilling account of this brutal decades-long battle between Christendom and Islam for the soul of Europe, a fast-paced tale of spiraling intensity that ranges from Istanbul to the Gates of Gibraltar and features a cast of extraordinary characters: Barbarossa, “The King of Evil,” the pirate who terrified Europe; the risk-taking Emperor Charles V; the Knights of St. John, the last crusading order after the passing of the Templars; the messianic Pope Pius V; and the brilliant Christian admiral Don Juan of Austria.

This strle’s brutal climax came between 1565 and 1571, seven years that witnessed a fight to the finish decided in a series of bloody set pieces: the epic siege of Malta, in which a tiny band of Christian defenders defied the might of the Ottoman army; the savage battle for Cyprus; and the apocalyptic last-ditch defense of southern Europe at Lepanto–one of the single most shocking days in world history. At the close of this cataclysmic naval encounter, the carnage was so great that the victors could barely sail away “because of the countless corpses floating in the sea.” Lepanto fixed the frontiers of the Mediterranean world that we know today.

Roger Crowley conjures up a wild cast of pirates, crusaders, and religious warriors strling for supremacy and survival in a tale of slavery and galley warfare, desperate bravery and utter brutality, technology and Inca gold. Empires of the Sea is page-turning narrative history at its best–a story of extraordinary color and incident, rich in detail, full of surprises, and backed by a wealth of eyewitness accounts. It provides a crucial context for our own clash of civilizations.

Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD

Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD

Using breakthrough diagnostic techniques, Dr. Daniel Amen has discovered that there are six distinct types of ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), each requiring a different treatment. With recommendations for drugs, nutraceutical therapy, cognitive reprogramming, parenting and educational strategies, biofeedback, self-hypnosis and more, this revolutionary approach can lead sufferers of ADD to a normal, fully-functional life.

Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of his peers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities. From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations, Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different types of ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work: from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medication recommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether the reader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with the disease.)
No stranger to the skepticism surrounding this topic, Dr. Amen begins with a list of dead-on myths (including "ADD is overdiagnosed") and surprising facts ("Many people with ADD are never hyperactive"). From this intriguing beginning flows a highly readable chapter on the signs and manifestations of ADD in all ages. Dr. Amen's full description of SPECT imaging includes multiple brain scan photos that nicely support his theories. But the most satisfying element of this well-researched presentation occurs in the final half of the book; here, Amen thoroughly explores the biological (diet, exercise, medication), psychological (from personal coaching to psychotherapy), and social support (parenting and school strategies) needed to heal each type of ADD. This book will prove a valuable tool for parents, adult sufferers, and medical professionals seeking practical support for managing this increasingly recognized condition. --Liane Thomas

Inside, the seats moved in 3 independent axis behind a motorized clam shell door-steps. I photographed this before digital camera's. It took me hours to get the lighting and exposures right.

Character & Characters: The Spirit of Alaska Airlines

Character & Characters: The Spirit of Alaska Airlines

This is the history of Alaska s last legacy airline, Alaska Airlines. Aviation-history writer Robert Serling has documented Alaska Airlines unconventional past and titled it Character & Characters in recognition of those who flew the planes and marked the airline s transformation from a single-aircraft bush operator in 1932 to a major U.S. carrier. From Alaska Airlines fabled beginnings serving the far reaches of America s Last Frontier to its present-day network stretching from Barrow to Zihuatanejo and Boston to Honolulu . . . from creative promotions to its historic flights that linked the United States and the Russian Far East . . . from distinctive in-flight services to the first online ticket sales, Character & Characters chronicles the unusual stories and colorful people behind this uncommonly independent airline. Serling s seasoned perspective is based on his authorship of a long list of airline histories, an industry fascination that began not long after the Wright brothers first flight, and his love of a good story. His experience has resulted in a spirited telling of Alaska Airlines history of survival and success over unforgiving geographies in a remarkably competitive business. Character & Characters has a rhythm to it, based not so much on chronology as on Serling s innate sense of how a good story should be told. And like the airline that is the subject of his work, his book is a great aviation saga.

Best time to see the Wildebeest Migration

Best time to see the Wildebeest Migration

Best time to see the Wildebeest Migration?

To answer this simple question, we need to first understand the cycle of the migration as animals move in search of water and fresh nutritious grasses.
Up to two million wildebeest and half a million zebra live on the Serengeti along with thousands of gazelles, impala and other antelope. This in turn attracts the predators which make this area a piece of dramatic open air theatre.
Every year some 1.4 million of these wildebeest and 200,000 of the zebra move northwards through the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and into the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya. The wildlife spills out into buffer zones outside the official parks where wild animals co-exist alongside the local Masai and their livestock.
November
Why they do this and when depends on the rains. The cycle begins in the sweet grass plains in the southern part of the Serengeti….The short rains begin in November to mid-December, prompting the migration back south to the south-western part of the Serengeti to the short sweet grass plains. Long columns of wildebeest and zebra are trailed by opportunistic predators.
Mid December to March
From mid December to March, the short grass plains of the south around Ndutu and the Ngorongoro Crater area are alive with migrant herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles and the animals give birth during this period of abundance.
Long Rains – April to early June – Seronera
When the long rains begin in April, the plains are at their most beautiful, vivid with wildflowers and teeming game. This is an ideal time for photographic safaris as the quality of the light is magical. From April to June, the Serengeti is the theatre for one of the most impressive wildlife shows on earth. Hundreds of thousands of plains game begin moving north-westwards to the Seronera, then the Grumeti River. This spectacular moving feast is trailed by predators; lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena.
The Seronera area of the Serengeti comprises open plains dotted with attractive kopjes. There’s plenty of resident game with relaxed predators as well as the migrating herds coming through in April and May. Given the Seronera’s central position, you can stay here and still travel south and north to the Western Corridor. However this advantage means that the Seronera remains busy throughout most of the migration.
July – Western Corridor & Northern Serengeti
By July, as the rains dwindle, huge columns of wildebeest and zebra cross the crocodile-infested Grumeti River into the Masai Mara, where there is permanent water. The Grumeti River lies just to the north of what’s called the Western Corridor. This area also has plenty of permanent game including zebra wildebeest, the predators and forest species.
The Northern Serengeti lies between the Seronera and the Kenyan border. This gentle rolling game country includes the pretty Lobo kopje. Given its northern position, it is far less crowded than the southern grasslands and the Seronera.
July to August – The river crossing
Many people want to see the dramatic river crossings when the columns of wildebeest and zebra scramble their way across the Grumeti and Mara rivers to reach the richer grazing lands of the Masai Mara in southern Kenya. Like the three billy goats, they must cross the river to get to the better ground but the crocodiles lie in wait. The animals mill around for a while on the southern banks before suddenly one brave wildebeest takes the plunge into the river current and then thousands follow in a dramatic watery stampede. Some do not make it.
August to October/November – Northern Serengeti & Masai Mara
Once safely across the wildebeest, zebra and gazelles spread out across the Masai Mara plains as far as the eye can see. They come to give birth to their young and the grasslands echo with the sounds of the new-born. These are good times for the many, but not for all. Predators are naturally drawn into the Mara with lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena all on the hunt. High above on the hot winds the carrion birds, the vultures and eagles, soar.
Most of the year the best game-viewing in the Masai Mara is in the Greater Mara areas. This is because there is a balance of cattle and wildlife in these areas – the cattle keep the grass short and green which the plains game prefer, and the predators follow the plains game.
However between July and October, during the migration season, good game-viewing becomes possible throughout the whole Masai Mara area as the million of wildebeest and zebra “mow” the grass down, making it palatable even in the normally long grass areas.
November to December – The migration heads south
As the fresh green grasses of the Masai Mara are mown down by the game, and the dry season continues the wildebeest, zebra and gazelles start to return south over the rivers and back into Tanzania especially once the short rains begin again (which heralds lush green grass).
Sometimes you get short periods of rain before the real ‘sho

GRUNAU BABY II B-2

GRUNAU BABY II B-2

Precise numbers are not known but various craftsmen have probably built more Grunau Babies and Baby derivatives than any other sailplane. Thousands were constructed in Western Europe between 1931 and 1945. During World War II, factory records show that 4,104 rolled from workshops in Germany and the occupied countries. After the war, thousands more were built in Czechoslovakia, Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, and Australia. The Grunau Baby also influenced the development of other sailplanes such as the Slingsby Kirby Kite, Slingsby Cambridge 1 and 2, and the Slingsby Type 21 two-seat trainer.

Edmund Schneider designed the Grunau Baby and built the first examples at his factory near the village of Grunau, in the Silesia region of eastern Germany. Today, this area is part of western Poland and Grunau is called Jesow. Schneider built the first Baby in 1931. It was a smaller version of the ESG 31 Stanavo, a sailplane designed during the same year for American pilot Jack O'Meara. Schneider used an innovative wing design patterned after the elliptical wings used on the high-performance sailplanes designed by the Academic Flying Group of the Darmstadt Technical University, the Akaflieg Darmstadt. Schneider's wing held a constant chord from the root to the aileron, and then the leading and trailing edges tapered to a rounded wingtip. To maintain control during a stall, Schneider designed the outboard wing and aileron with washout, or twist. On a wing with positive washout, the trailing edge of the wing curves up near the tips when viewed from the rear.

The German glider champion, Wolf Hirth, had nothing to do with designing the Grunau Baby. However, he lent his name to the Baby sales campaign and for some time, many thought he was the designer. This was easier to believe because the glider handled well in the air and exhibited good performance. The factory at Grunau began to hum steadily to fill a stream of new orders. The fatal crash of another Schneider sailplane at the 1932 German national soaring contest in Bavaria compelled Schneider to hire a professional aeronautical engineer, Emile Rolle who redesigned the Baby from nose to tail. This new version was called the Grunau Baby II. Among its many improvements, the Baby II had a longer wing, reshaped rear fuselage, and a shorter rudder. On April 3, 1933, Kurt Schmidt soared a Baby II all day, all night, and into the next day without landing. He had remained aloft for 36 hours and 36 minutes, a new world endurance record for motorless airplanes. The news electrified the world and for the next ten years, Grunau Baby II production continued without pause.

Schneider continued to refine the airplane and introduced the Baby II A and the definitive II B. The II A introduced a wing of slightly greater span to accommodate spoilers for glidepath control, ailerons with a narrower chord, and for the first time, a canopy and windscreen for the cockpit. When the Baby first appeared, it was accepted wisdom that the pilot should feel as much unimpeded airflow as possible, the better to sense rising and falling currents of air, temperature changes and the like. On the II B, Schneider changed the spoilers to the more powerful Schempp-Hirth, 'parallelogram' configuration and added a wheeled launch dolly that the pilot jettisoned immediately after takeoff. Other versions followed but more Grunau Baby II B gliders were built than all other variants combined.

The Baby II B was nearly a perfect club sailplane. It was relatively easy to build from plans, it flew well, and the aircraft was strong enough to handle mild aerobatics and the occasional hard landing. Novice pilots could attempt their first real soaring, flying high and far, using updrafts generated by slopes and mountain ridges, and spiraling columns of warm air called thermals. Many Grunau Baby II B pilots achieved the coveted Silver-C soaring badge introduced in 1930. This required a pilot to remain aloft at least five hours, gain a minimum of 1,000 m (3,280 ft) after takeoff, and cover a horizontal distance of 50 km (31 miles).

Fleets of Grunau Baby II B sailplanes served as primary flight trainers operated by the Deutsche Luftsport Verband (German Sport Flying Organization, the DLV) created in 1933. The DLV became the Nationalsozialistiche Fliegerkorps (NSFK) in 1937. The Nazi political machine operated both organizations to train military pilots without appearing to violate the post-World War I Versailles Treaty that outlawed such remilitarization. Many of the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) pilots that flew during World War II first trained in Grunau Babies.

May 1, 1949, marks the date when the U. S. Air Force officially transferred the Grunau Baby IIb to the custody of the National Air Museum. Very little is known of the glider's operational history. According to the data plates secured to the bulkhead behind the pilot's seat, technicians built this glider in 1944 at the Petera Hohenelbe l/Rsgb. workshop factory. The ai
