Avian Flight (Oxford Ornithology)

Avian Flight (Oxford Ornithology)

Bird flight has always intrigued mankind. This book provides an up to date account of our existing knowledge on the subject, as well as offering new insights and challenging some established views.

A brief history of the science of flight introduces the basic physical principles governing aerial locomotion. A treatment of flight-related functional morphology concentrates on the difference in shape of the arm and hand part of the wings, on the structure and function of tails, and on the shape of the body. The anatomy and mechanical properties of feathers receive special attention. Aerodynamic principles used by birds are explained in theory by simply applying Newton's laws, and in practice by showing the direction and velocity of the attached flow around an arm wing cross section and of the leading edge vortex flow above a hand wing. The Archaeopteryx fossils remain crucial in our understanding of the evolution of bird flight despite the recent discovery of a range of well-preserved ancient birds.

A novel insight into the interactions between wings and air challenges established theories relating to the origin of bird flight. Take-off, flapping flight, gliding and landing are the basic ingredients of bird flight, and birds use a variety of flight styles from hovering to soaring. Flight muscles consisting of mosaics of specialized fibers are the engines that generate the force required to keep the wings and tail in the gliding configuration and perform work during flapping motion. The energy required to fly can be estimated or measured directly, and a comparison of empirical results provides insights into the trend in metabolic costs of flight of birds varying in shape and mass from hummingbirds to albatrosses.

I'll Take that to Go!

A Red Kite eating a meal mid-air. This shot was captured at the Gauntlet Bird of Prey Center in Knutsford Cheshire.

The Red Kite (Milvus milvus) is currently endemic to the Western Palearctic region in Europe and northwest Africa, though formerly also occurred just outside in northern Iran. It is a rare species which is resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwest Africa, but birds from northeastern and central Europe winter further south and west, reaching south to Turkey. Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel and Libya.

The Red Kite's diet consists mainly of small mammals such as mice, voles, shrews, young hares and rabbits. It also feeds on a wide variety of carrion including sheep carcasses and dead game birds. Live birds are also taken and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. Earthworms also form an important part of the diet, especially in the spring.

My new Italian Stallion

My new Italian Stallion

Unlike in southern European countries like Italy and Greece, scooters are not the number one way of inner city transportation here in Holland. Quite a shame, since they are a whole lot faster than cars in the alley-rich European city centres, cheaper in fuel consumption, and easier to park. Off course Holland is an exception, since 99% of the population also rides a bicycle.

In Holland, scooters are usually associated with 16-year olds, making a lot of lawnmower-like noises and ignoring other traffic.

Ever since the fuel prices have gone beserk, scooters are gaining in popularity. It's stylish Italian scooters like retro Vespas that rule the sales charts now, since these beauties not only look great but also are low on fuel (1 litre for 40kms is no exception). Unfortunately, they're expensive as hell.

I bought myself this 2007 Piaggio Fly 50cc 4-stroke scooter, as an alternative for city transportation when we will move to rural Lisse within 4 months from now, besides my bicycle and our car. Ever since I picked it up last week, I grab every oportunity to drive it around to any place, anywhere. I love it! It has one downside however - my fysical condition goes down the hill even faster than my brandnew scooter...

And so to Greece. We didn't fly till the afternoon, so we spent our morning wandering around London before we headed for Gatwick. Again. A few hours later we were in Corfu, at our cheap and cheerful hotel across from the port. A quick trip out to find sustenance and then we were back on our balcony with some cans of Mythos and a couple of Gyros. Then it was off to bed, because the next morning we would be catching that ferry that you can see in the distance there to head for the tiny island of Paxos.

The Flight to Italy: Diary and Selected Letters (Oxford World's Classics)

The Flight to Italy: Diary and Selected Letters (Oxford World's Classics)

This is the authentic day-to-day record of the first eight weeks of freedom as Germany's greatest poet heads for the Italy he has been yearning to see since childhood and finds himself in a new world of warmth and light. Leaving behind the difficulties of a decade in Weimar, the burden of administration, a difficult love-affair, and the frustration of not having time to work on his literary projects, he discovers himself again as a sensuous being and an artist. Goethe's fresh and spontaneous notes, sometimes dashed down at crowded tables in primitive Italian inns, bring together art and nature, Antiquity and the Renaissance, aesthetics and science, observations of climate, rocks, plants and the Italian people, in an unpremeditated mixture through which the poet's mature vision of the natural and human world can be seen taking shape. Never before translated into English, this diary brings us close to a great European writer at a turning-point of his life.

Judy called right before we went nappy time...here Heather talks with Spencer
11/20/2004 When in Rome! Heather and Rich fly to Rome and have fun on their first day.

It is 11:30 pm local time, and oh but we've been footsore and on the way. It all started a couple of day ago, Thursday for us, when we left home about 6:40 pm with Maddy and Spencer. I officially finished the book by writing two chapter intros. I later got on line and learned that Schuyler planned to do intros for ch1 and ch6, and write the 'how gps works' section for ch5. This meant that I am, officially, at least until QC (quality control) comes back, done with the book.

Wow.

And we drove to Dad's and the kids were rambunctious until we opened up our new CD's for Harry Potter and the Prisonar of Azkaban...we listened to the first CD and that quieted them right down!

And we had a dinner at Dad and Judy's and then up to my Mom's, where we chatted a bit...then bed. And the 5:15 am alarm. It didn't feel all that bad, surprisingly.

The flight to NY went well. I watched the incredibly stupid, but still amusing, movie Anchor Man, heather geeked on our itinery. Then I did a bit, then geeked with my GPS.

Note to self...GPS is cool, and this whole idea of narrative of place is cool, but really, taking GPS tracks in Rome doesn't work that well. I think it is best supplemented with voice recordings of places and later geocoding to a map.

hmmm. I try and create meaning by automatically/quasi automatically parsing track logs of less meaningful trips or segments of trips-down I5 to go lobster diving, for example, but perhaps it is the meaning in the trip that is more important. The GPS is a tool for helping to look at that, but I think I can post process intermittent track points, coupled with memory and photos and voice recordings, to get a better sense of trip.

Anyway...the leg to NY went very quickly. Then we were stuck on the tarmac for a bit while our gate was cleared for us. Eeeks...I had to pee!

Then we actually were in a bit of a rush to make our connection...we got there before the 'we are closing the door on your ass' stage, but not much!

I felt a bit ick for a bit, but once I took an ibuprofen, got rid of my heart burn and had some dinner i was okay. We took sleeping pills when we took off. I took another one after dinner, and then forced myself to try to sleep.

It didn't feel as though it were working-almost as though the sleeping pill made weary but not asleep...odd feeling. But I guess I slepped. Heather woke me when they served breakfast. I did not wake easily, and I went back to sleep a couple of times. I was seeing double for part of the time.

Poor Heather says she only slept about 2 hours.

But we arrived, and waltzed through customs and onto the train. Amazing! About 10 euros apiece and we had a nice train ride with two Italian women and an italian man...we didn't really talk, but, oh well.

Into the train station, and a bit of trouble getting oriented to find our hotel. Now it is easy, but the first time was not so easy.

And then somehow it got later and we figured out the metro to go to the vatican. I was pissy about wanting to eat, and we had trouble with that-the place Heather wanted for us wasn't open until 12:30. We had okay ham and cheese sandwiches and excellent olives from a deli, ate in the plazza (?) by the gellatti milleneum.

Then we went up to the vatican. We had missed the vatican museum, sadly, but we perservered and toured Saint Peters. Heather and I were seperated at this point. I hooked up with a free tour guide and learned lots of great stuff.

Heather called when I was about to learn how to become a Swiss Guard. I accidentally hung up on her, and then couldn't figure out how to call her back, but I guessed she'd be in the front, and she was. She was pooped! But gamely lead me through the tombs of the popes. That is neat...it is so non-cave like...and yet, there is plenty of room for more of them :-)

Well we hiked back to the metro, metroe'd back to the train station and walked back to the hotel and took a 2ish hour nap...it was about 3:00 when we started this 'nap' thing.

Well we woke and did like the Romans, and then got ourselves out of the hotel. We took the 40 bus out and walked down to campo di fiori and did Rick Steve's 'Nighttime rome' walk...

We had dinner in the Piazza Navona at the 'Tre Scalini' cafe/Mokarabina coffee bar. We had drinks an appetizer and a primi-ie, we shared 1 appetizer and 1 primi, and a desert, shared, and it cost a bit. Later we saw what looked like better food for much less money. live and learn. I loved the pantheon (only the outside, as it was closed) and saw where kids had set up to camp at the pantheon, etc.

We got minorly scammed at the Trevi fountain over some flowers that were 'given' to us...and when I didnt' pay enough for them the guy took 2 of three back! ack. I was not too annoyed

Flight and Freedom in the Ancient Near East (Culture and History of the Ancient Near East)

Freedom as a value is older than Greece, as evidence from the Ancient Near East shows us through this work. Snell first looks at words for freedom in the Ancient Near East. Then he examines archival texts to see how runaways expressed their interest in freedom in Mesopotamian history. He next examines what elites said about flight and freedom in edicts, legal collections, and treaties. He devotes a chapter to flight in literature and story. He studies freedom in Israel by looking at Biblical terminology and then practice in narratives and legal collections. In a final chapter Snell traces the descent of ideas about freedom among Jews, Greeks and Christians, and Muslims, concluding that the devotion to freedom may be nearly a human universal.

Ethan and Spot on a Boeing 737-200

Ethan and Spot on a Boeing 737-200

The Boeing 737 is the world's most popular medium-range, narrowbody commercial passenger jet aircraft. With 6,160 ordered and 5,009 delivered, it is the most ordered and produced commercial airliner of all time and has been continuously manufactured by Boeing since 1967. The 737 is now so widely used that at any given time, there are over 1,250 airborne worldwide. On average, one takes off or lands every five seconds.
The 737 was born out of Boeing's need to field a competitor in the short-range, small capacity jetliner market which had been opened up by the BAC 1-11 and the Douglas DC-9. Boeing was badly behind however when the 737 program was initiated in 1964, as both of these rivals were already into their flight certification programmes. To speed up the development time, Boeing reused as much technology from the existing 707 and 727 as possible, most notably the fuselage. However, one of the wing sets failed when submitted to static test on a bench at 95% of designed maximum load capacity. The wing had to be redesigned, but this provided the aircraft with a superb wing capable of operating both with short runways and high altitude efficiency. Even with the early shortcomings, 737 was cheaper and quicker to design, featuring six-abreast seating compared to the 1-11 and DC-9's five-abreast layout.

The -100 and -200 series are identifiable by their tubular engine nacelles which are integrated into the wing and project both fore and aft of it. The engines used on the Original 737 models are Pratt and Whitney JT8D low-bypass turbofans. The Originals can also be identified by the smoothly curving upsweep of the tail fin - the Classics and NG models have a noticeable "kink" at the base of the fin.

The first 737 (a 100 series) took its maiden flight April 9, 1967 and entered service in February 1968 with Lufthansa, the first foreign airline to launch a new Boeing plane. The 737-200 made its maiden flight on August 8, 1967. Lufthansa was the only customer to purchase the 737-100 from new and only 30 aircraft were ever produced. The lengthened 737-200 was widely preferred and was produced until 1988. The launch customer of the 737-200 was United Airlines. The inaugural flight for United was flown on April 28, 1968 from Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Grand Rapids, Michigan. (GRR) United B-737-200 N9003U flew this first 737 revenue flight. After aircraft #135, an important improvement was applied to the subsequent units and mod kits made available for the precedents: the less efficient 727-style thrust reversers was replaced by exclusive target thrust reversers designed in conjunction with Rohr, but such modification cost US$24 million to Boeing.

In the early 1980s the 737 had its first major facelift. The biggest change was the usage of CFM International CFM56 engines in place of the JT8Ds. The CFM56 is a high-bypass turbofan and thus its diameter was larger than the previous P&W unit, so the engine was slung underneath the wing rather than built into it. This posed a problem as the 737's limited ground clearance (a trait of the 707-derived fuselage) meant that the gearbox and accessories normally fitted to the bottom of the engine had to be fitted to the side — giving the cowling the fattened hamster cheek appearance that is often confused with a flattening of the nacelle geometry. At the same time, the 737 gained a partial glass cockpit from the 757 and 767. The first 737-300 entered service in 1984.

By the 1990s, the 737 had lost ground technologically to the newer Airbus A320. In 1993, Boeing initiated the 737-X or Next Generation (NG) program.

The Next-Generation 737 encompasses the -600, -700, -800 and -900, and amounted to a complete redesign of the 30-year old airliner. The 737NG is an entirely new aircraft, sharing very little with previous 737s, other than fuselage frames. New wings, new avionics and revised engines were the biggest engineering changes. The 737 was given a glass cockpit with CRT (except the -900, which had newer and higher tech LCD screens) screens and digital systems inspired by the ones that were used on the 777. A new interior was designed for the Next-Generation 737, again borrowing heavily from the 777. The parts count is down by about 33%, reducing weight and simplifying maintenance. Additional changes since its introduction include a new interior and performance enhancing winglets which reduce fuel consumption and improve take-off and climb performance.

In 2001, the 737 was stretched one more time to create the 737-900, which is in fact longer and carries more passengers than the 707, and steps into the capacity of the 757-200. As a result of weak demand Boeing closed the 757 line in 2004. Early in 2005, the 737 lost its distinctive "eyebrow" windows in the cockpit

BR15 Dinner

For the 1st time, I flew EVA air. I knew I would be disappointed, and I was. The women (yes, plural) at the check-in counter were the rudest people I have ever met. I will skip the long story, but the experience was so terrible I told their manager that I will never, ever ride EVA again (except on my return flight, of couse). The actual ride was okay, the flight attendant were fine, and the seats, I must admit, were a bit more roomy and comfy than China Airline. Oh but then the food arrived.....

I had the choice between spicy chicken or black pepper beef. I went with the beef. This was sooooo disgusting! The beef, though tender, was way too salty. The potatoes were grainy and tasteless and tuff. They could not even afford some cheap cake and gave us cookies instead, and the cookies were so sweet I could only have one bite.

Another thing about this flight, the entertainment options were much weaker than China Airline's, and it was very hard to operate. My neighbors had many problems with it too.

G-d is not an idol - let alone a white man

1 "'You shall make for yourselves no idols, neither shall you raise up an engraved image or a pillar, neither shall you place any figured stone in your land, to bow down to it: for I am Yahweh your God.

2 "'You shall keep my Sabbaths, and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am Yahweh.

3 "'If you walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;

4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

5 Your threshing shall reach to the vintage, and the vintage shall reach to the sowing time; and you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.

6 "'I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one will make you afraid; and I will remove evil animals out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

7 You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.

8 Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand; and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

9 "'I will have respect for you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and will establish my covenant with you.

10 You shall eat old store long kept, and you shall move out the old because of the new.

11 I will set my tent among you: and my soul won't abhor you.

12 I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you will be my people.

13 I am Yahweh your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves; and I have broken the bars of your yoke, and made you go upright.

14 "'But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments;

15 and if you shall reject my statutes, and if your soul abhors my ordinances, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant;

16 I also will do this to you: I will appoint terror over you, even consumption and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and make the soul to pine away; and you will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will eat it.

17 I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you.

18 "'If you in spite of these things will not listen to me, then I will chastise you seven times more for your sins.

19 I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like brass;

20 and your strength will be spent in vain; for your land won't yield its increase, neither will the trees of the land yield their fruit.

21 "'If you walk contrary to me, and won't listen to me, then I will bring seven times more plagues on you according to your sins.

22 I will send the wild animals among you, which will rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and make you few in number; and your roads will become desolate.

23 "'If by these things you won't be reformed to me, but will walk contrary to me;

24 then I will also walk contrary to you; and I will strike you, even I, seven times for your sins.

25 I will bring a sword upon you, that will execute the vengeance of the covenant; and you will be gathered together within your cities: and I will send the pestilence among you; and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

26 When I break your staff of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver your bread again by weight: and you shall eat, and not be satisfied.

27 "'If you in spite of this won't listen to me, but walk contrary to me;

28 then I will walk contrary to you in wrath; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins.

29 You will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters.

30 I will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and cast your dead bodies upon the bodies of your idols; and my soul will abhor you.

31 I will lay your cities waste, and will bring your sanctuaries to desolation, and I will not take delight in the sweet fragrance of your offerings.

32 I will bring the land into desolation; and your enemies that dwell therein will be astonished at it.

33 I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you: and your land will be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.

34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate and you are in your enemies' land. Even then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths.

35 As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, even the rest which it didn't have in your sabbaths, when you lived on it.

36 "'As for those of you who are left, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf will put them to flight; and they shall flee, as one flees from the sword; and they will fall when no one pursues.

WWWII'S Tuskegee Airmen NCOs

WWWII'S Tuskegee Airmen NCOs

A 22-year-old hotshot aircraft mechanic displays history-making courage as he and 29 other African-Americans arrive on a muddy work site 13 miles outside the Tuskegee city limits.

He finds his machinery in crates. His government housing is a tent in the cold air of an Alabama pine forest. This man’s outfit is not wanted in America, but the patriot stands tall.

“That was my introduction to Tuskegee,” retired Senior Master Sgt. Dan Summers said.

Yes, Tuskegee, as in “The Tuskegee Airmen,” the African-Americans trained largely by fellow African-Americans for status as airmen within the Army Air Corps of 1940s America.

Like many republics, the United States had a legacy of ethnic tension. The sort of injustice she rebuffs today. Tuskegee helped give diversity a fighting chance in America.

Summers maintained the base’s warplanes from 1942 to 1945, as both a civilian and an enlisted service member. Now comfortably retired in Tucson, Ariz., he’s one of only several hundred living Tuskegee warriors left.

He has always told the truth on who “ran” the training pipelines at Tuskegee. Did the enlisted and civilian members run those lines to perfection? You bet your lambskin flight jacket they did!

“There’s no way they could have done that without enlisteds and civilians,” the 81-year-old stressed. “The results of their work were evident. The pilot is the end product of the flight training program. He’s in the observable spot, so he gets the attention.

“Credit for this thing should include the enlisted support people. But that’s just beginning.”

That first cadre of African-American technicians repeatedly wrenched results from a flight of mostly rebuilt training aircraft. Civilian and enlisted members outnumbered officers 10-to-1, but they got no “ink” for posterity. It’s as if they did not exist.

One must “unentomb” details on the technicians from well-preserved yearbooks in the chests of the Tuskegee veterans’ homes. They show freshly shaven faces like Summers’ and the first enlisted African-American meteorology, chemical warfare and aircraft maintenance airmen.

Young Summers entered this system by chance. Studying at Virginia’s Hampton Institute had him strapped for tuition. So he left school to toil in a steel foundry. A year before the war, he traded that job for a mechanic’s post at Pennsylvania’s Olmsted Air Depot. He was an apt pupil.

“I was interested in the airplane from a mechanic’s standpoint, rather than a pilot’s,” he said.

By the 1941 Christmas season, the bookish technician got wind of an outlandish project to determine if ethnicity was a factor in the flying business. This shot across the bow brought out the patriot in the slender, tennis-playing aircraft mechanic with unfinished business at college.

“I thought, ‘Daniel, what can I get out of this besides a trip to Alabama?’”

When federal recruiters said “ ‘A promotion goes with it,’ I said, ‘Hey, you’ve got me.’ ”

In May 1942 the War Department manifested Summers and 28 more black aircraft workers on a contracted Pullman car train. Porters drew the blinds for security as the train wove south to a new military stop at Chehaw, Ala. The technicians went to their airfield site in Army trucks.

Teaching the art of air war
Summers toughed out the beddown period at Tuskegee as a very junior aircraft maintenance man. He became an assistant superintendent of civilians who trained prospective airmen.

“I’d only been in the game a year, and I fell into training people on hydraulics and props.”

As a man who was admittedly not military-minded when he got to Tuskegee, Summers warmed to the experience “without a lot of trauma.”

But there were problems.

Quality of life was not good for Tuskegee’s civilian maintainers. They had to scrap for housing in the area. Only African-American landlords opened their homes and hearts.

“The first year, paydays came sometimes a month late. People we rented from understood, because they had been through it [discrimination] themselves,” Summers said.

Tuskegee became a war machine and a home, once housing was built, halfway into the war.

“They had about 100 houses on the base. With the number of people we had, 100 was nothing. It was called Mitchell Village, after Gen. Billy Mitchell,” he recalls.

“I was fortunate to merit one as a supervisor. When people moved on base, they were living among friends in an Air Force community. The families enjoyed it,” he said.

“Mister” Summers became “Private” Summers in 1944. His first hitch after basic was Tuskegee.

“They sent me back as a private, and I still had the house. That was like putting a rabbit in a briar patch. It could only happen in this great country of ours,” he said.

Life in the air, life in the sky
The private worked hard in his rookie Air Corps season. His team of civilians and airmen had lots of old warplanes to make over.

People at the busy base bonded over maintenance sessions. They furiously fixed flight controls on worn, sky blue-bellied, open cockpi

----- The Chinese name of the gate, Tian'anmen ???, is made up of the Chinese characters for "heaven," "peace" and "gate" respectively, which why the name is conventionally translated as "The Gate of Heavenly Peace". However, this translation is somewhat misleading, since the Chinese name is derived from the much longer phrase "receiving the mandate from heaven, and stabilizing the dynasty." (????,????).[2] The Manchu name of the gate, Abkai elhe obure duka, lies closer to the original meaning of the gate and can be literally translated as the "Gate of Heavenly eacemaking."[3] The gate has a counterpart in the northern end of the imperial city, Di'anmen ??? (Manchu: Na i elhe obure duka), which may be roughly translated as the "Gate of Earthly Peacemaking".A distant view of the Tian'anmen
Like other official buildings of the empire, the gate has unique imperial roof decorations. It has the highest number of figures on the roof ridges - ten in each set.[citation needed] In front of the gate are two lions standing in front of the gate and two more guarding the bridges. In Chinese culture, lions are believed to protect humans from evil spirits. Two stone columns, called huabiao (??) - each with an animal (hou) on top of it - also stand in front of the gate. Originally, these installations were designed for commoners to address their grievances by writing or sticking up petitions on the columns. However, the examples in front of the Imperial City were purely decorative and instead connoted the majesty of the imperial government.Because of the gate's position at the front of the Imperial City, and historical events that have taken place on Tian'anmen Square, the gate has great political significance. In the 20th Century this means the gate has frequently been decorated with portraits of objects of veneration. In the early years of the People's Republic, on special occasions the gate was hung with portraits of Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zedong, Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin, with pride of place reserved for Sun Yat-sen. Since the death of Mao in 1976, the central gate has had a portrait of Mao Zedong towering over it, while the western and eastern walls have had giant placards; the left one reads "Long Live the People's Republic of China" (?????????), while the right one reads "Long live the Great Unity of the World's Peoples" (?????????). The right placard used to read "Long Live the Central People's Government" (????????), and both placards are written in simplified Chinese instead of traditional Chinese characters. The phrasing has significant symbolic meaning, as the phrase used for long live, like the palace itself, was traditionally reserved for Emperors of China, but is now available to the common people.
The reviewing stands in the foreground are used on International Workers Day (May Day) and on the National Day (October 1) of the People's Republic of China.
In front of the stands is the palace moat, still filled with water but now containing decorative illuminated fountains.
In ancient times, the Tian'anmen is the third gate encountered when entering Beijing. After the Qianmen, the Gate of China, stands the Tian'anmen. Proceeding further inward, the next gate is the 'Upright Gate' (Simplified Chinese: ??; Traditional Chinese: ??; Pinyin: Duanmen), identical in design to the Tian'anmen; behind it is the southern entrance of the Forbidden City itself, known as the Meridian Gate. The Tian'anmen is featured on the emblem of the People's Republic of China.By The Forbidden City was constructed soon after that (1406-1420), followed by the Temple of Heaven (1420), and numerous other construction projects. Beijing ( ??; Beijing), a metropolis in northern China, is the capital of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was formerly known in English as Peking. Beijing is also one of the four municipalities of the PRC, which are equivalent to provinces in China's administrative structure. Beijing Municipality borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast. Beijing is China's second largest city in terms of population, after Shanghai. It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of rail

Messerschmitt Me 262A-2a Schwalbe (Swallow)

Messerschmitt Me 262A-2a Schwalbe (Swallow)

The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe ("Swallow") was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.[5] Design work started before World War II began, but engine problems prevented the aircraft from attaining operational status until mid-1944. Compared with Allied fighters of its day, including the jet-powered Gloster Meteor, it was much faster and better armed.
In combat, when properly flown, it proved difficult to counter due to its speed. Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 509 Allied kills (although higher claims are sometimes made)[Notes 1] against the loss of about 100 Me 262s.[citation needed] The design was pressed into a variety of roles, including light bomber, reconnaissance and even experimental night fighter versions.
The Me 262 is considered to have been the most advanced German aviation design in operational use during World War II.The Allies countered its potential effectiveness in the air by relentlessly attacking the aircraft on the ground, or while they were taking off or landing. Maintenance during the deteriorating war situation and a lack of fuel also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. In the end, the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction and the small numbers that were deployed in operational service.
The Me 262 influenced the designs of post-war aircraft such as the North American F-86 and Boeing B-47.
n April 1944, Erprobungskommando 262 was formed at Lechfeld in Bavaria as a test unit (Jager Erprobungskommando Thierfelder)[3] to introduce the 262 into service and train a core of pilots to fly it. On 26 July 1944, Leutnant Alfred Schreiber with the 262 A-1a W.Nr. 130 017 damaged a Mosquito reconnaissance aircraft of No. 540 Squadron RAF PR Squadron, which was allegedly lost in a crash landing upon landing at an air base in Italy.[22] Other sources state the aircraft was damaged during evasive manoeuvres and escaped.[23] It was the first victory for a turbojet fighter aircraft in aviation history.[24] Major Walter Nowotny was assigned as commander after the death of Werner Thierfelder in July 1944, and the unit redesignated Kommando Nowotny. Essentially a trials and development unit, it holds the distinction of having mounted the world's first jet fighter operations. Trials continued slowly, with initial operational missions against the Allies in August 1944 allegedly downing 19 Allied aircraft for six Me 262s lost, although these claims have never been verified by cross-checking with USAAF records. The RAF Museum holds no intelligence reports of RAF aircraft engaging in combat with Me 262s in August, although there is a report of an unarmed encounter between an Me 262 and a Mosquito.Despite orders to stay grounded, Nowotny chose to fly a mission against an enemy bomber formation flying some 30,000 feet above, on 8 November 1944. He claimed two P-51Ds destroyed before suffering engine failure at high altitude. Then, while diving and trying desperately to restart his engines, he was attacked and forced to bale out by other Mustangs. Some US historians proposed that Nowotny's victor was P-51D pilot Lt Robert W Stevens of the 364thFGAccording to other sources, he was shot down and killed by First Lieutenant Edward "Buddy" Haydon of the 357th Fighter Group, USAAF and Captain Ernest "Feeb" Fiebelkorn of the 20th Fighter Group, USAAF.
Actually, the exact circumstances surrounding the end of Walter Nowotny remain uncertain to this day. It is also possible that he was hit by "friendly" flak. The Kommando was then withdrawn for further training and a revision of combat tactics to optimise the 262's strengths.By January 1945, Jagdgeschwader 7 (JG 7) had been formed as a pure jet fighter wing, although it would be several weeks before it was operational. In the meantime, a bomber unit — I Gruppe, Kampfgeschwader 54 (KG 54) — had re-equipped with the Me 262 A-2a fighter-bomber for use in a ground-attack role. However, the unit lost 12 jets in action in two weeks for minimal returns.Jagdverband 44 (JV 44) was another Me 262 fighter unit, of Staffel (squadron) size given the low numbers of available personnel, formed in February 1945 by Lieutenant General Adolf Galland, who had recently been dismissed as Inspector of Fighters. Galland was able to draw into the unit many of the most experienced and decorated Luftwaffe fighter pilots from other units grounded by lack of fuel.
During March, Me 262 fighter units were able, for the first time, to mount large scale attacks on Allied bomber formations. On 18 March 1945, 37 Me 262s of JG 7 intercepted a force of 1,221 bombers and 632 escorting fighters. They shot down 12 bombers and one fighter for the loss of three Me 262s. Although a 4:1 ratio was exactly what the Luftwaffe would have needed to make an impact on the war, the absolute scale of their success was minor, as it represented only one per cent of the attacking force. In 1943

Aero L-29

Aero L-29

The Aero L-29 Delfin (English: Dolphin, NATO reporting name: Maya) is a military jet trainer aircraft that became the standard jet trainer for the air forces of Warsaw Pact nations in the 1960s. It was Czechoslovakia's first locally designed and built jet aircraft.

In the late 1950s, the Soviet Air Force was seeking a jet-powered replacement for its fleet of piston-engined trainers, and this requirement was soon broadened to finding a trainer aircraft that could be adopted in common by Eastern Bloc air forces. Aero's response, the prototype XL-29 designed by Z. Rublic and K. Tomas first flew on 5 April 1959, powered by a British Bristol Siddeley Viper engine. The second prototype was powered by the Czech-designed M701 engine, which was used in all subsequent aircraft.

The basic design concept was to produce a straightfoward, easy-to-build and operate aircraft. Simplicity and ruggedness were stressed with manual flight controls, large flaps and the incorporation of perforated airbrakes on the fuselage sides providing stable and docile flight characteristics, leading to an enviable safety record for the type. The sturdy L-29 was able to operate from grass, sand or unprepared fields. Both student pilot and instructor had ejection seats, and were positioned in tandem, under separate canopies with a slightly raised instructor position.

In 1961, the L-29 was evaluated against the PZL TS-11 Iskra and Yakovlev Yak-30 and emerged the winner. Poland chose to pursue the development of the TS-11 Iskra anyway, but all other Warsaw Pact countries adopted the Delfin under the agreements of COMECON.

Production began April 1963 and continued for 11 years, with 3,500 eventually built. A dedicated, single-seat, aerobatic version was developed as the L-29A Akrobat. A reconnaissance version with nose-mounted cameras was built as the L-29R.

The Delfin served in basic, intermediate and weapons training roles. For this latter mission, they were equipped with hardpoints to carry gunpods, bombs or rockets, and thus armed, Egyptian L-29s were sent into combat against Israeli tanks during the Yom Kippur War. The L-29 was supplanted in the inventory of many of its operators by the Aero L-39 Albatros. More than 2,000 L-29s were supplied to the Soviet Air Force, acquiring the NATO reporting name "Maya."

As a trainer, the L-29 enabled air forces to adopt an "all-through" training on jet aircraft, replacing earlier piston-engined types.

On July 16th, 1975, a Czechoslovakian Air Force L-29 shot down a Polish civilian biplane piloted by Dionizy Bielanski that was attempting to defect to the West.

On October 2, 2007, an unmodified L-29 was used for the world’s first jet flight powered solely by 100% biodiesel fuel. Pilots Carol Sugars and Douglas Rodante flew their Delphin Jet at Stead Airport, Reno, Nevada in order to promote environmentally friendly fuels in aviation.

Between September 10-14, 2008, two L-29s took first and second at the Reno Air Races. Both L-29s consistently posted laps at or above 500 miles per hour. Former Astronaut Curt Brown took first in "Viper," followed by Red Bull Racer Mike Mangold in "Euroburner."

Russia says it destroyed 2 Georgian L-29s during the 2008 South Ossetia war.

Train to Jhansi

Train to Jhansi

Couldn't get a plane flight to Khajuraho so we opted for the train/car marathon. Boarded an overnight train to Jhansi (17 hrs). Had a first class ticket but had to haggle with the ticket wallah for a 2-person compartment. No AC but the train provided it's own ventilation (open windows) when moving. Unfortunately, this was the "mail train" which stopped at every station. We did get to see a lot of the countryside.

Train to Bangalore

This is in second class unreserved (the worst). It was crowded but not too bad, at least not for the three hours I took it. I was on my way from Mysore to Bangalore for my flight to Dubai. That cost me around 300 Rupees. But, I forgot my plane ticket and had to take a cab to Mysore and back, and that cost me 2800 Rupees.

Flight for sore eyes...

Flight for sore eyes...

I've never been so happy to see an airport....

The trip to San Diego for Comic-Con was probably my 2nd worst air travel experience, the worst being a 13-hour flight from Boston to Cleveland on New Year's Eve, through a blizzard, about 13 or 14 years ago.

Because the NY airports are crowded, and because it's no trouble for me to stay up all night, I usually schedule my flight out of JFK for 6 or 7 am. This means leaving for the airport at 4 am - the added bonus is, there's not much traffic on the road, so my taxi gets me there in about 20 minutes.

I arrived at JFK to find that my 6 am flight had been cancelled. Not delayed, just cancelled outright. (I won't mention the airline, but it rhymes with Schmelta). To fly to S.D., they wanted me to hop on a bus to Newark (in a different state!) and catch the nooner - I said no way, there must be another plane leaving JFK, so get me on it.

They transferred me to American, for a flight leaving at 11:20, which would still get me to the Con in time. Except the 11:20 got delayed until 4 pm. Back to the ticket counter - they could put me on the 9 am flight, but I'd have to check out of the secure area, ride to another terminal, go back through security again, and by the way, running would probably be a good idea.

I felt just like a contestant on "The Amazing Race"...

Anyway, I was supposed to arrive in San Diego at 10:30 am, but instead ended up at LAX, on standby for the 2 pm shuttle. Didn't make it, but caught the 3 pm. Arrived in SD at the same time as my boss. He went to the convention, I went to the hotel to pick up the merchandise and my co-worker. Got my badge and entered the con with a full 5 minutes to spare.

The Flight of Ikaros: Travels in Greece During the Civil War

“An intense and compelling account of an educated, sensitive archeologist wandering the back country during the civil war. Half a century on, still one of the best books on Greece as it was before ‘development.’”—The Rough Guide to the Greek Islands
“He also is in love with the country . . . but he sees the other side of that dazzling medal or moon. . . . If you want some truth about Greece, here it is.”—Louis MacNeice, The Observer
“One of the best and most honest books about the modern Greeks.”—E. R. Dodds
In 1947, at the age of twenty-three, Kevin Andrews received a Fulbright Fellowship to study medieval fortresses in the Peloponnese. Andrews spent the long summers of 1948 to 1951 traveling through the region and the winters writing in Athens. This opportunity to travel through little-frequented areas during Greece’s postwar civil war—and before the advent of tourism, industrialization, or easy communications—brought Andrews into immediate contact with village populations, shepherd clans, and the paramilitary vigilantes who kept their own kind of order in the provinces, as well as with the displaced peasants of the Athenian slums. The close experience of all these lives took shape in The Flight of Ikaros, first published in 1959. Paul Dry Books is pleased to return to print this modern travel classic.
Kevin Andrews (1924–1989) was a writer and archaeologist. He wrote many books about Greece, of which he became a citizen in 1975.

Losing Control Finding Serenity: How the Need to Control Hurts Us And How to Let It Go

What Would Your Life Be Like If You Simply Let Go of Control?

Do you criticize your spouse, nag your children, or hover over coworkers in an attempt to control them or prevent them from making mistakes? What if you let events unfold without resisting? Accepted people for who they are instead of trying to change them? Stopped pressuring your coworkers? Stopped telling your family what's best for them?

When you let go of control, your blinders come off and you can engage in life's currents in an intuitive manner. The rewards are unexpected and often exciting. Conflicts diminish. Family bonds strengthen. Intimate relations become more intimate. Creative horizons expand. Work becomes more rewarding.

Losing Control, Finding Serenity provides practical strategies and decontrol tools to help you

USS Drum Submarine. Museum Ship. Mobile.Alabama.USA.December 2007

USS Drum Submarine. Museum Ship. Mobile.Alabama.USA.December 2007

From Wikipedia.com: "The submarine sailed from Midway 23 September 1942 on her third war patrol, bound for the eastern coast of Kyushu. On 8 October she contacted a convoy of four freighters, and defied the air cover guarding the ships, to sink one of the cargo ships before bombs forced her deep. The next day, underwent a severe depth charging from several escorts after she attacked a cargo ship. Later in the patrol, she sank one of three air-escorted cargo ships, and damaged at least two more ships before completing her patrol at Pearl Harbor 8 November.
January 1943, Drum carried out the demanding task of planting mines in heavily traveled Bungo Suido. On 12 December, she contacted a carrier, Ryuho, with a full deck load of planes. Although taking water forward due to faulty valves, Drum launched torpedoes at this choice target, scoring two hits, and causing the carrier to list so far that her flight deck became completely visible. Also visible was a destroyer bearing down, and splashes that indicated Drum's periscope was under fire. As the submarine dove she lost depth control and her port shaft stopped turning. As she made emergency repairs, she underwent two waves of depth charging. When she surfaced several hours later to see what had become of her prey, an airplane forced her down. During this patrol, Drum damaged a large tanker, another choice target.

After a thorough overhaul at Pearl Harbor, Drum made her fifth war patrol between 24 March and 13 May 1943, searching waters south of Truk after she had made a photographic reconnaissance of Nauru. She sank two freighters in April, then refitted at Brisbane, Australia. Her sixth war patrol, between 7 June and 26 July, found her north of the Bismarck Archipelago, sinking a cargo-passenger ship on 17 June. Again she put into Brisbane to replenish, and on 16 August sailed on her seventh war patrol. Adding to her already impressive list of sinkings, she sent a cargo ship to the bottom on 31 August, as well as patrolling off New Georgia during the landings there. She put into Tulagi from 29 September to 2 October to repair her gyrocompass, then sailed on to Brisbane.

Drum sailed 2 November 1943 for her eighth war patrol, coordinated with the landings at Cape Torokina. Patrolling between the Carolines and New Ireland, she sank a cargo ship on 17 November and on 22 November, attacked a convoy of four freighters. The convoy's escorts delivered three depth charge attacks, Drum was damaged heavily and was ordered to Pearl Harbor. Drum returned there on the 5th of December. After inspection showed the conning tower needed to be replaced, she sailed to the west coast.

Returning to Pearl Harbor 29 March 1944, Drum sailed 11 days later on her ninth war patrol, during which she patrolled the waters around Iwo Jima and other islands in the Bonin Islands. No worthy targets were contacted, but a reconnaissance of Chichi Jima gained valuable intelligence for bombardment of the island later by surface ships.

The submarine refitted at Majuro between 31 May and 24 June, then sailed on her 10th war patrol to give lifeguard service for raids on Yap and Palau. She sank a 125-ton sampan on 29 July, capturing two prisoners with whom she arrived at Pearl Harbor on 14 August. She sailed for Surigao Strait 9 September on her 11th war patrol, and after two weeks in the Strait with no contact, was ordered north to the South China Sea. Here she patrolled during the Leyte landings and the decisive Battle for Leyte Gulf, sinking three cargo ships bound to reinforce Japanese troops fighting to keep the Philippines. While bound for Majuro for refit, Drum searched east of Luzon Strait for downed aviators.

Drum replenished and made repairs at Majuro between 8 November 1944 and 7 December, then sailed on her 12th war patrol for the Nansei Shoto. Only one contact was made during this patrol, from which she returned to Guam 17 January 1945. During her 13th war patrol, from 11 February to 2 April, Drum played a part in the assaults on both Iwo Jima and Okinawa, providing lifeguard service for air strikes on the Nansei Shoto and the Japanese home islands as bases were neutralized before both invasions. Returning to Pearl Harbor, Drum sailed on to a west coast overhaul, and after training at Pearl Harbor, cleared Midway 9 August on what would have been her 14th war patrol. She proceeded to Saipan at the end of hostilities, and from there sailed for Pearl Harbor, the Canal Zone, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire."

Essay aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft - Marketing, Unternehmenskommunikation, CRM, Marktforschung, Note: B+, 29 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: • Analyse the European airline industry, with implications for the budget sector, and especially Ryanair. • Evaluate Ryanair's strengths and weaknesses. • Is Ryanair's strategy sustainable? • Would you recommend any changes to Ryanair?s approach? Just a few years ago Ryanair was a tiny, impoverished Irish airline trying unsuccessfully to compete with Aer Lingus using a handful of elderly turboprop planes. In 2003 its share price is so high the company is worth more than British Airways, and with the unlikely business model of selling seats for as little as 99 Pence for the privilege of flying to airports perhaps fifty miles outside the cities they purport to serve, Ryanair has become the most profitable airline in Europe. It is also an airline whose phenomenal success has never been too far from controversy, whether it is its militant lack of sympathy for its passengers when their flight is delayed or cancelled, its robust approach to industrial relations, or indeed the industrial language favoured by its charismatic and buccaneering chief executive, Michael O'Leary. (Creaton, 2005) The following questions will critically evaluate the Ryanair phenomenon and its future prospects with taking the European airline industry into consideration.
